An empty feeling reminiscent of the one that flooded me when I broke up with my boyfriend seems to be round the corner. I can sense it for it makes me feel rather lazy and want to stop everything I have undertaken. It hasn’t come upon me with all its glory as yet, or else, I will have been in bed by now. I will stem its progress. That’s all I can do. And possibly, I’ll get it to leave me alone.

We will be shifting this week to another apartment. Mother dragged me to that apartment and got me to help her measure the length and breadth of its hall, bedroom, and kitchen. She did that because she wanted to plan the arrangement of the furniture.

However, when she made known her plans to all in the evening, none agreed wholeheartedly with her arrangements.

After all, how can you even think of stationing the cupboards – ALL the cupboards – in the hall? Her explanation is that there will not be place to sleep in the bedroom. Well, I don’t think Mother, Father, and Sister need so much space to sleep. Sister thinks the same too. And so, an argument broke out at 8:15 pm IST. Mother was hell bent on having her way and we were heaven bound to not let her.

It was then that she dug into her bag of dramatic statements and pulled out this: “Why have to bother about it looking nice? Why do you care? This house is – after all – a flock of borrowed feathers!”

A minute’s silence ensued and Sister had her retort ready. “Mother,” she said, registering determination in every syllable, “Just because you think that way doesn’t mean we ALL think that way.”

“Oh!” Mother sighed, “you just don’t understand.”

“On the contrary, Mother,” Sister snapped, “YOU don’t understand. You expect the cupboards, the dining table, the computer table, AND the music system to be all in the hall. Where will he sleep?” And she pointed at me.

“Well, there’ll be place.”
“Where Mother? Just think. Don’t just get carried away!”

But instead of re-thinking the whole idea, Mother just gave up: “Fine!” she said exasperated, “Do what you want!”

And that’s exactly what we are about to do.:)

McKenna stated that Rent- A-Center employees have used “outrageous and unconscionable behavior”
in dealing with customers who failed to pay and showed up on time. This customers are weekly paying for their rent. That representatives are shouting profanities, threatening children that their parents are going to jail, and kicking down doors to their customers which was all denied by Rent A Center Vice President Xavier Dominicis. He firmlt stated that his employees do not threaten or harass any customers, or do anything else illegal.

Unhappy Customers

Karen Lyons of Federal Way, Wash., was a happy Rent-A-Center customer until the day she paid late for just 1 day late payment. She went to Rent A Center and informed that shew will be late 1 day. By the next day, she was surprised to see a collector forcing her to pay the full payment and threatening her 6 year old grandson. She said that the employee was rude, disrespectful and threatening. She knows she is paying more for renting than purchasing but this was the only way she could afford she said. This allegation was also denied by Rent A Center President Xavier Dominicis.

Weil wir ja unentwegt singen und tanzen, egal, ob es gerade angemessen ist oder nicht! Form schlägt Inhalt!

Concert music, though, because it is contentless, is rarely Camp. It offers no opportunity, say, for a contrast between silly or extravagant content and rich form. . . . Sometimes whole art forms become saturated with Camp. Classical ballet, opera, movies have seemed so for a long time.

Sure, the classic broadway song Seasons of Love is not your traditional holiday song but the story of Rent takes place during Christmas time and the cast filled with cultural diversity which we love to celebrate at MCCN.  However, aside from culture which is down played in the story in a wonderful way, a recurring theme in Rent is the problem of homelessness.  The holiday season tends to make it easier to supply food to those in need.  Many organizations have can food drives or need help in soup kitchens.  Make this a season of love.

The holiday theater season is upon us, and I am doing my happy dance. While others are decking their halls or dropping while shopping, I’m in song and dance mode. I’m trading in tangled holiday lights for sparkling stage lights. I’m trading in fussy decorations for fabulous sets and costumes. I’m trading in all the worries the holidays can bring for all the wonder and magic of watching children dance and sing.

Whip out your calendar and join the fun. Plenty of shows are running now, and plenty more will run past the Christmas holiday—but the bounty of holiday theater peaks between December 4^th and 20^th, so now is the time to get your favorite show dates in your planner. Don’t let the season slip away without taking in as many of these wonderful performances as possible. (A little friendly competition, anyone?)

Ten or twenty years from now, your child may not remember all those things wrapped in meticulous ribbons and bows. But memories of holiday plays and musicals—because we experience them with family and friends, because they’re magical—endure.  And memories trump materialism every time.

I’ve compiled a list of holiday shows to make it easier for you to find your favorites (be sure and read my last two blogs as well—one featuring holiday dance, the other featuring holiday music). Don’t want to wait for the shows that open next weekend? Get your holiday happiness on now with Childsplay’s Junie B. in Jingle Bells, Batman Smells! (a world premiere based on three of Barbara Park’s best-selling books). It’s already playing at the Tempe Center for the Arts (it runs through Dec. 27^th). We saw our first Childsplay show well over a decade ago and they still continue to amaze, amuse, delight and inspire us.

Also playing now is Desert Stages Theatre’s The Snow Queen (it runs through Dec. 20th at their theater in Scottsdale). Gerry Cullity wrote the book, music and lyrics for this production, which is adapted from a Hans Christian Andersen tale.  We’ve never been to Desert Stages, so I’ll have to mosey over and check this out before too long. I’ve run into plenty of parents who’ve told me their children had great experiences performing there.

Broadway Palm Children’s Theatre in Mesa presents Frosty the Snowman: A Magical Adventure Dec. 4^th-29^th, complete with a “unique kid-friendly luncheon buffet.”  Fountain Hills Youth Theatre presents The Nutcracker—a play—touted as a “hilarious original re-telling” from Dec. 4^th-20^th. Laughter. Lunch. More laughter. What’s not to love?

Greasepaint Youtheatre (affiliated with Phoenix Theatre but performing at Stagebrush Theatre in old town Scottsdale) presents Oliver! Dec. 4^th-20^th. My lovely Lizabeth is performing in this one, so you better buy your tickets now before I snatch up the very last of them! It’s been years since I’ve seen her perform there and I’m just a tad bit excited!

Oliver! is directed by D. Scott Withers, one of the Childsplay artists who first fueled Lizabeth’s love of theater, so we know to expect nothing less than magic with a twist after seeing his productions of Rent and Pippin last season. Come for the 2pm Dec. 5^th show and help support Greasepaint’s food drive for St. Mary’s Food Bank (bring a canned or boxed food item to enjoy ticket savings).

Valley Youth Theatre near downtown Phoenix presents A Winnie-the-Pooh Christmas Tail Dec. 4^th-23^rd. They’ve run this show for years because Valley audiences just can’t get enough of it. There’s really nothing like the power of Pooh. Grab your favorite stuffed animal—Piglet, Eeyore, Tigger or Roo—and take them along to enjoy it too!

Another returning classic is A Christmas Carol presented by Actors Theatre of Phoenix Dec. 12^th-24^th at Herberger Theater Center. It starts a bit later than the others, so you can pace yourself. In the meantime, check out the Actors Theatre website—it’s seriously fun and will leave you feeling smarter than before your visit. The show itself—featuring some of the Valley’s most talented and beloved cast and crew—will leave you inspired.

The award for biggest holiday menu goes to Theater Works, performing at the Peoria Center for the Performing Arts—which is offering three holiday shows this year. One, a concert featuring Christmas carols sung by Youth Works, happens Dec. 16^th (doors open at 5:30pm). Check their website for info on the accompanying firefighter toy drive and food bank food drive. The others, playing Dec. 4^th-20^th, are Santa Claus is Coming to Town and Miracle on 34^th Street.

ASU Gammage is bringing Annie to Tempe as part of the Broadway Across America series, and their timing couldn’t be more terrific. Annie runs Dec. 29^th-Jan. 3^rd, so it’s the perfect anecdote for that letdown we sometimes feel when all the packages have been torn open and family members start their journeys back to faraway cities and towns. Annie is a truly timeless Depression-era tale you may find especially poignant this season as so many families are struggling.

Ah, a night of celebration took place last week, my readers, with the opening of the new Butte College Theatre; the pinnacle of their extensive construction projects. And what better way to kick off a theatre grand opening but a musical with transient two-steppers and strung-out singers! Yes the long-awaited Butte College production of Rent debuted last week and your humble reviewer soon found out that golden promises are sometimes gilded after all.

Note: I have been following the BC Theatre company for a few years now and I have been consistently impressed by their productions; and I really wanted that feeling again as I stepped into the new theatre. Alas, it was a masterpiece for the eyes, not so much for the ears.

The production value of Rent was, surprisingly, very high. The stage was beautifully furnished with pipes and other props used to create an old New York industrial building (Fannie Mae office?). This was not the case for some of the previous productions that were performed in Paradise. The lighting and special effects were also done superbly.

Rent is a musical, which subsequently requires actors to have the ability to sing as well. There were many good actors and actresses but they could not commit fully to what the songs required. There were great singers, but not in the main cast I’m sorry to say. Why these supporting cast members didn’t get the lead roles I haven’t a clue; maybe they weren’t fans of spandex perhaps.

On that note, and play on words, the on-stage rock band also added to the confusion of it all. Personally, I am not a fan of rock music and musicals: it never works and inevitably the band always seems more interesting than the script. For more than half of the show, the band was louder than the actors, which led to monumental plot confusion. During the show, many audience members turned their heads to the person next to them and asked what was going on.

In the end, it was a college production of a Broadway musical that plays on shock value while trying too hard to make the brand new theatre worth while. The shock value: men kissing, drugs and sex are things you’d find at any given Blue Room show. Congratulations to Butte College on their new theatre and if the rumors are true, Rent will be around all year; won’t it Chico State?

*When I asked another local reviewer about his glowing review of the show, he told me that he left out his negative comments and that he lowered his expectations of the show since it was a college production. Now, I have been to every Butte College production since I have been there and I have consistently been excited; but simply not this year. And the problem about lowering expectations is that the reader doesn’t know you are. For the reader, a good review of one play is on the same level a good review on another. I do not lower my expectations since it is the theatres that are competing for you: the reader. I am sorry Rent didn’t come out great, but there have to be bad reviews sometimes; at least to make the good reviews worth something.

As a landlord, you can pretty much devise your own ways to woo people to your properties.  Whether you want to fill your empty spaces with individuals, families or companies, why not try adding some unique benefits to “sweeten” the deal?

Many potential tenants will be more inclined to move if they feel they are getting more value for their dollars.  Therefore, if you make your space irresistable, you’ll be more likely to spend less time hunting for renters and more time receiving rent.

Looking for ways (especially during the holidays) to attract new tenants to your doors?  Try some of these marketing and incentive techniques:

• Offer a significant discount for a limited period of time.  For instance, if renters sign a one-year lease with you between December 1 and December 31, offer them a discount off their first month’s rent.  Some landlords even offer free rent for a month; however, if you’re going to take this risk, make sure you conduct a thorough tenant screening to minimize your chances of having a “hit and run” tenant.
• Boost the attractiveness of your rental space with low-cost upgrades.  Fresh paint, new (or simply well-cleaned) carpeting and built-in appliances add pizzazz to homes, apartments and offices.  Pay someone to clean the place from top to bottom, such as a trustworthy college student home during break.  (You can background screen that person for maximum lowering of risk, too.)
• Offer a referral fee for good tenants.  You’re probably on social networking sites (or you at least have a social network of some kind!), so take advantage of all those potential “salespeople”!  Offer them a referral bonus for tenants who sign on long-term.  Make it a sweet deal and you’re likely to get some takers!  (Again, tenant screen all applicants; just because Joe and Jane are the brother and sister-in-law of your best buddy doesn’t mean they will make ideal tenants.)

OMG!  I can’t belive it! Did you see this?  Shawn Carter, Will & Jada Pinkett-Smith have done something REVOLUTIONARY! I can’t believe  it!  These hip moguls have done the ultimate in “supporting the arts” by signing up to be the newest producers of “Fela!” currently running on Broadway.  

This is a huge leap for theater; especially black theater.  When black producers with such clout and a huge built in audience decide to back a project like this you know it’s got to be special.  I think everybody should see this show.  It should be just as massive as ‘RENT’ or ‘WICKED’.  We have to support our own.  The arts aint dead yet!  Read the review here and let  me know what you think!  I’m really going to squeeze some penies together to see this show.  Not because they told me too, but because I love Fela the artist and this looks like a wild ride!

The major US RTO companies are Best Buy, Circuit City, Rent A Center, to name just a few.

Rent A Center

Rent A Center is considered to be the largest rent-to-own operator in the United States. The company occupies approximately 39% of market shares as of September 30, 2009. According to the recent statistics, Rent A Center operates about 3,004 company-owned stores across the country, as well as in Canada and Puerto Rico. Company’s subsidiary, ColorTyme, is a national franchisor of rent-to-own stores, operating 213 franchised rent-to-own locations under the trade name of “ColorTyme”. The company offers its goods under flexible rental purchase agreements that typically allow the customer to obtain ownership of the merchandise at the conclusion of an agreed-upon rental period. These rental purchase agreements are designed to appeal to a wide variety of customers by allowing them to obtain merchandise that they might otherwise be unable to obtain due to insufficient cash resources or a lack of access to credit. These agreements also cater to customers who only have a temporary need, or who simply desire to rent rather than purchase the merchandise. As any other “coin” this business has its own disadvantages, however, it is a whole other story.

Rents up, mortgage payments down Results from the Household Economic Survey (Income) (HES (Income)) for the year ended June 2009 show no overall change in average weekly expenditure on housing costs from the previous year, Statistics New Zealand said today. This result was made up of an increase across all households in average weekly property and ground rent payments (up 8.1 percent), offset by decreases in average mortgage principal repayments (down 7.1 percent) and average mortgage interest payments (down 2.8 percent).

For those making rent payments, median (half pay more, half pay less) weekly rent payments increased from $220 in 2007/08 to $241 in 2008/09 (up 9.5 percent). Meanwhile, median weekly mortgage payments, for those making these payments, decreased from $328 in 2007/08 to $312 in 2008/09 (down 4.8 percent), partly reflecting a decrease in mortgage interest rates charged over the survey period.

For those paying rent, median weekly rent payments in the five regions surveyed were as follows: Auckland ($300), Wellington ($250), Canterbury ($245), Rest of North Island ($200), and Rest of South Island ($178). Meanwhile, median weekly mortgage payments, for those making these payments, were as follows: Auckland ($414), Wellington ($340), Canterbury ($318), Rest of North Island ($262), and Rest of South Island ($219).

Other survey results showed that average (mean) annual household income was $78,876 in 2008/09, up 5.6 percent from 2007/08. The increase was driven primarily by an increase in aggregate wage and salary income.

HES (Income) is a shortened version of the three-yearly full Household Economic Survey. It ran for the first time in the year ended 30 June 2008, and is run in each of the two years between the full HES to collect data on household and personal income, living standards, and housing costs.
