World renowned architect Renzo Piano who recently designed the acclaimed organically shaped San Francisco Academy of Sciences with its living roof…has collaborated with New York based Hudson Furniture to create this sustainable, covetable walnut dining table with legs referencing the 50′.

Hudson Furniture spromotes and produces sustainable design through it’s own brand and collaborative furniture collections. Their design philosophy is born of a fundamental respect for the natural forms of trees and their inherent grain patterns. Inspired by the well defined organic lines and geometric forms of trees, Hudson Furniture uses traditional joinery techniques and hand rubbed oil finishes to produce its furniture collection..

None of the woods they use are harvested from old growth forests. All the wood slabs that they use are domestically sourced from either salvaged trees or wind/storm damaged trees. The trees have an average life span of 250-300 years. When these trees die, they gradually do so from the crest to the roots. These trees then have to be removed as they might cause damage to nearby houses, other trees or outlying areas.

” We put high regard and value on these trees by turning them into pieces of enduring art instead of leaving them out to decay “, Barlas Baylar, Hudson Furniture Inc. founder and designer.

Hudson Furniture is also New York’s only repository for legally harvested petrified wood. For Hudson Furniture Inc. it was second nature to explore petrified wood as an extension of its already existing collection of organic contemporary designs. Petrified wood, having the visual characteristics of wood but the feel of stone, represents a contemporary fusion of the two original materials into a new compelling organic interior accessory.

Morris A. Mechanic Theatre (Baltimora, USA)

Centro Georges Pompidou (Parigi, Francia)

Federation Square (Melbourne, Australia)

Beehive (Wellington, Nuova Zelanda)

Royal Ontario Museum (Toronto, Canada)

Biblioteca Nazionale (Pristina, Kosovo)

Kansai International Aiport (KIX) is the second most important airport in Japan (after Narita in Tok

Kansai International Aiport (KIX) is the second most important airport in Japan (after Narita in Tokyo) and the main airline hub for the Kansai area, which includes Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe, Wakayama, and many other large cities. KIX is located on an artificial island in Osaka Bay, near Sennan and Izumisano Cities in southern Osaka Prefecture. It is connected to the land by a 3 km (2 mile) bridge that carries rail and road traffic, and also by ferry services.

The island built for this airport turned Osaka Prefecture, formerly the smallest prefecture in Japan in terms of land area, into the second smallest in Japan, putting Kagawa Prefecture in last. There have been problems with the island sinking slowly each year, but they have been mitigated for the most part, naturally and due to technological innovations. Fear of strong crosswinds affecting rail traffic has also been assuaged through installation of protective barriers. KIX survived severe typhoon winds and the 1995 Great Awaji-Hanshin Earthquake without significant damage.

The airport was designed by world-famous Italian architect Renzo Piano, and the terminal is the longest in the world at 1.7 km in length (it is served by a tram/train). There are two runways, and a third is planned as part of a future expansion. KIX has a good variety of restaurants and facilities, and just across the bridge is Rinku Town, one of the most extensive and entertaining shopping areas in all of Osaka Prefecture. You can also stay in the ANA Gate Tower Hotel at Rinku Town, located in the Rinku Gate Tower Building, the second tallest building in Japan after Yokohama’s Landmark Tower (Rinku Gate Tower is the same height as Osaka City’s WTC Cosmo Tower).

KIX is about 35-45 min. by limited express train (JR or Nankai Railways) from central Osaka City, and JR trains continue through Osaka all the way to Kyoto. Check out KIX’s website here. When you visit Osaka next, come through Kansai International Airport and learn why it is considered on of the best airports in the world.

Here is another good post on KIX that focuses more on the interesting architecture design of the airport and contains a number of terminal-building photographs.

The Art Institute of Chicago has recently opened the new Modern Art wing designed by Renzo Piano. P

The Art Institute of Chicago has recently opened the new Modern Art wing designed by Renzo Piano. Piano’s Design Workshop is probably the most consistently innovative and interesting big-name international architecture office out there. Every building they execute is marked by an acute attention to detail and they all seem to serve their clients rather than the architect’s ego.

So, on a recent visit, I found myself really appreciating the building, but not loving it. As mentioned, it is beautifully and simply put together – the spaces flow nicely, the materials are clearly and cleanly brought together. Maybe most importantly, and in light of Denver’s Art Museum, it is clear that the building is there to serve the art that it displays, not the reverse.

However, in its simplicity and lightness, it lacks the robust material quality that I think distinguishes the best of Chicago architecture. For while the Chicago skyscrapers and the Chicago window of the early twentieth century championed a kind of structural determinism and rationality, it exerted this as the primary formal expression. The Modern wing more like a series of screens, horizontal and vertical, that wrap the building. So, while this is a great response to the program of the building, to the housing and display of art, it does not have to be the primary driver of the building.

This is a photo of the Gage Building, near the museum on Michigan Avenue, designed by Louis Sullivan. You can feel the frame and weight of this building, the decorative medallions seeming to hold up the middle piers. This is what I think of when I think of Chicago architecture – taut buildings that are both light and heavy, rational and expressive.

Piano’s addition is a very good building, a great addition to the museum and the city. But it speaks more to an international, place-less design than one rooted in a city of a great architectural tradition.

“Remembering Jan Kaplický – Architect of the Future” at Design Museum will end at the end of this week on November 1, as well as yesterday’s entry “Mariscal: Drawing Life.”

World-renowned Czech-born architect Jan Kaplický, who died on January 15 this year, escaped to London in September 1968 in the wake of the Prague Spring, the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia. He worked at the office of Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers, with whom he developed the design for the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, and then joined Foster Associates, now Foster and Partners. In 1979 Kaplický set up his own architectural think tank Future Systems with David Nixon, and had created innovative and unusual architectures style that combined organic forms with high tech futurism. His major works include awards-winning Selfridges Building which became an icon of Birmingham, and spaceship look-like media center at Lord’s Cricket Ground. Kaplický began to spend more time in the Czech Republic toward the end of his life. He won the international architectural competition for the new Czech National Library building, which was to have been his first major building in his home country, but his design plan resembling a green and purple blob and nicknamed “the Octopus,” was cancelled due to the strong objections as it would “ruin Prague’s panorama.” Kaplický died with heart failure in his native Prague, just after observing his daughter’s birth, without seeing the completion of another of his project, the Congress and Concert Hall Centre in České Budějovice (Budweis), with his own eyes.

In this exhibition, you can see gifted architect and designer Kaplický’s major works as well as his stream of ideas for solar powered vehicles, electric cars, jewellery, bikinis and double-decker buses. His futuristic design, perfect for Science Fiction movies, is fun and exciting. It is a shame that the space is much smaller than another architect’s less entertaining exhibition “David Chipperfield: Form Matters” downstairs.

assignment 6 till 12 Introduction The professional fascination for these pictures lie’s in the

assignment 6 till 12

Introduction
The professional fascination for these pictures lie’s in the one hand in the clarity and composition (Rossi) and in the other hand in the lightness and transparency (Piano).
Both strike my in there clarity and simplicity. Simplicity in a positive way, maybe best formulated in the term concentrated (strong) architecture.

Comparison
The differences between the pictures are best explaned with the keywords.

The images are equally on just a few points. To start with the architects, both are from Italy. An importand stream in Italy is Rationalistic architecture. To as harmony, rhythme, symmetry, eye for the character of the materials and the synergy between the building, his destiny and the context.

Expressing it different you cane discover in both buildings this bakground. Where you coud say Rossi has a ‘ classic’ or post modern approach. Piano adds modern material and trays to achieve, in it’s appearance, to make a transparned and ‘light’ building.
Both appearances are of course inspired by and inbedded in there time.

Analyse New York Times

Type
High rise (form) glass and screens of ceramic rods (material) public (accessibility) space and light (radiance) offfice building (program).

Concept
The concept of the New York Times building is bast on the goal of bringing the city and the newspaper together. The Times tower is a fully glass-enclosed building. Its only unclear surfaces are its exposed structure, and the inventive sunscreen that keeps the building from overheating yet allows its clarity to read through. To emphasize transparency, the designers used a low-iron, water-white glass, clear as crystal, without a trace of tint. This essentially brings the inside and outside together.

Model
The concept is shaped in this drawing of Renzo Piano. The drawing features in my optic two points; 1) The connection between the tower and the city by it’s transparncy. 2) And the echo of live of the city reflects in the news paper.

Program
This building is a real estate investment on the newspaper’s part, a joint development venture with Forest City Ratner Companies, which owns 42 percent of it. The Times occupies floors two through 27, and their development partner rents out the rest, save for floors 28, 51, and the lobby space, which are co-owned. Commercial spaces on either side of the courtyard will are occupied by retail tenants.

Analyse Hotel Il Palazzo

Type
Geometry (form) brick masonry with expressed steel lintels (material) public (accessibility) reinterpretation of classical orders (radiance) hotel (program).

Concept
The concept of the building is in my optic based on the notion of a Palace on a plint with outbuildings. For all is buildings counts that he treids to abstract buildingtypes from his research to find elemental and clear shapes. Also in this design is the abstraction and reduction easy to recognize.

Model
Aldo Rossi is an architect who expresses himself with drawings. This drawing shows a first sketch of the hotel. It’s already saying a lot about the final design in it’s material, color, facade.

Program
The program of this building consists of a hotel with support program to as a disco, bar, restaurant and squar. On the picture you cane see the entrance to the disco on the front and on the squar the entrance to the hotel with al it’s corresponding program. It’s exely not a really big hotel, but because of the frontal facade it’s very demanding.

E’ lunga Genova.

The carriage house at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum was razed to make way for new museum build

The carriage house at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum was razed to make way for new museum buildings. (David L. Ryan/Boston Globe)

The Barnes Foundation, a charmingly intimate museum in Merion, just outside Philadelphia, has been trying to move itself for years to a more prominent location. It has not made a lot of friends in the process.

Founder Albert C. Barnes was a major crank and patent- medicine magnate who died in 1951 leaving strict orders on how he expected his art to be hung in the rooms of his mansion. Those orders had to be followed by Manhattan architects Tod Williams and Billie Tsien, who must also duplicate the rooms in which the art was hung.

The Barnes teetered at the edge of a financial abyss for years, but it has doggedly raised cash and run a long legal gantlet in pursuit of the risky move. The foundation insists it is essential to bring in more visitors and expand giving.

The architects’ proposed design retains the dignity of the Barnes current home in the new location on Philadelphia’s Benjamin Franklin Parkway. To keep the 93,000-square-foot structure from dwarfing the 12,000 square feet of replicated exhibition space, Williams and Tsien use a high light court to separate a low limestone rectangle housing the collection from the rest of the structure…

Meanwhile, in Boston, the beloved Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum sees misplaced salvation in a Renzo Piano addition. Gardner, a flamboyant art patron of the Gilded Age, placed 2,500 items — starring Titian, Raphael and Rembrandt — in a gawkily proportioned faux Venetian palace, where her wayward taste and bizarre display sensibility at once charm and appall.

3. Museum of Modern Art – Mario Botta

2. California Academy of Sciences – Renzo Piano

Community Garden, Lower East Side flickr.com/neatnessdotcom

Nothing is better about contemporary London architecture than a lack of it. After the demolition of the Swiss Centre on Leicester Square, a beautiful rectangle opened up – eating dim sum in Joy King Lau we could look across the void to Whitcomb Street and see the jumble of mismatched adjoining buildings and balcony bars. The breathing space lasted barely a breath: now another soulless behemoth of a hotel is being assembled, consuming the space, chewing out the sky.

Meanwhile, the multicoloured slab-sides of Renzo Piano’s new Central St Giles development (the kind of building that makes you wonder if Al Qaeda does requests) are a grim reminder that the governing principle of urban architecture isn’t any kind of plastic artistry, but rather the brutal economics of floor space measured in square metres. It’s clear that we can’t hope for any more good buildings: the best we can hope for is that they demolish the awful ones we already have.

In Walthamstow, the site of a failed shopping development has been paved over and a few desultory benches added: the cheapest possible form of public space, a skatepark for empty crisp packets. On Oxford Street, Land Securities, developers of proposed flats on the site of the old Park House have run into trouble and want to turn the wasteland into a temporary corporate hospitality venue for film parties and reality TV shows. At least some are campaigning to turn the Middlesex Hospital site into community allotments. Better by far would be the kind of community gardens that the residents of New York’s Lower East Side have been developing since the 1970s. Community gardens don’t just provide for diversity, playgrounds and public art, but through their membership require intelligent and collective decision-making about the shared use of green space. London could do with some more of that, and a bit more demolition, too.

This week was pretty lazy. Most of the time took one of my favourite routes with little variation. Still bumped into some interesting things.
The other day, reading about Renzo Piano’s latest project – ‘The Shard’ – I saw a quotation that to be tired of London is to be tired of life. Being perfectly aware of the levels of cheese I think it’s 100% spot on! By the way, who gives buildings their nicknames? How can anyone sane call a building ‘the shard’. I get that they move away from names based on what’s inside (as this changes and can be confusing) but ‘The Shard’ sounds like a name of a teenage hard rock band which enjoyed a two weeks long half life in a dusty garage somewhere in an American suburb. The band didn’t make it as summer holiday ended and pimple-adorned boys went back to school. Unfortunately for London one of them became a marketing assistant somewhere and came up with this ‘brilliant’ edgy nickname.
Coming back to the walks… I liked a sculpture commemorating victims of a terrorist attack in Indonesia – a stone ball with Picasso’s doves etched on it. It’s by the HM Treasury.

As of late I spot faces in objects – as disturbing as it sounds. On the bright side better to spot faces then other human parts. So for example I saw a combo of a bench and a building looking like a sad old man or spotted an alien-like face in a spilled beer, and also saw a hungry character about to eat something in a small alley just of Strand.

It does look like a face peeking from behind a corner, right?
As I was mostly following my favourite route had the opportunity to take some more shots of the London Eye. The first one is taken from a standard perspective, but in hdr technique – which tends to produce nice colourful pictures.

On another one the Eye forms a halo/laurel wreath above the Battle of Britain heroes.

The other day had a lengthy chat with a gas engineer who used to work with Polish pilots who had fought for Britain. Guess contrary to what one might think looking at the Battle of Britain monument and the included list of dead pilots some Poles did survive. And became gas engineers – great reward.

Speaking of rewards, have recently learned that people who move from unemployment (and life on benefits) to employment in some cases effectively work for as little as 80p an hour. Why would someone prefer to have a disposable income of 430GBP a week and spend 35 hours doing a not-very-exciting job when as unemployed he/she can get 400GBP? Yes, there’s a sense of fulfilment and ego boost that comes with work – and it gives prospects for a better position in the future. But it also comes with potentially bitchy boss, extra stress, less time for leisure and possibly a depressing realization that there is no ‘going up’ in a particular workplace. My solution to activate the unemployed – give more financial incentives to work. Do not cut benefits, but the opposite – make them disappear more gradually. And raise minimum wage. How to pay for it? Simple, save by not spending money on wars.

On a more positive note, the other day found this little jewel in the tube – written by a tube worker (presumably one who does feel fulfilled).

So yes, it’s nearly Sunday, my lovelies. So smile and have a great day!

Hal Foster was in Gainesville to give a lecture for the Architecture School. The theme was neomoder

Hal Foster was in Gainesville to give a lecture for the Architecture School. The theme was neomodernism, focusing on Norman Foster and Renzo Piano. I had not heard the story before about the role that childhood memories played in Piano’s aesthetic. It is another example of an image of wide scope, the formatting of an imagination in specific childhood experiences. There are two memories that reinforce one another in Piano’s case: one of watching sailing ships in the port city of Genoa, his hometown; the other of laundry blowing in the wind on the roofs of the city. Below are two citations documenting the references. The images are of the “flying carpet” roof, the Modern Wing of the Art Institute of Chicago.

"Flying Carpet" roof

The notion of a ‘light modernity’ is suggestive. ‘There is one theme that is very important for me,’ Piano remarks: ‘Lightness (and obviously not in reference only to the physical mass of objects).’ He traces this preoccupation from his early experiments with ‘weightless structures’ to his continued investigations of ‘immaterial elements’ like wind and light. Lightness is also the message of his primal scene as a designer, a childhood memory of sheets billowing in the breeze on a Genoese rooftop, a vision that conjures up the shapely beauty of classical drapery as well as contemporary sailing boats as architectural ideals. For Piano lightness is thus a value that bears on the human as well as on the architectural – it concerns graceful comportment in both realms.

Windsack

The talk of not struggling is all very well, but in order to be where he is today, Piano has had to work very hard, with great purpose and commercial nous. (His point is that it is a question of balance.) Piano’s outlook is heavily influenced by two things: having been a child in postwar Italy, and growing up near a port. “A harbour,” he says, “is like an imaginary city where everything keeps moving.”

Every Sunday his father would take him to Genoa’s harbour and Piano would watch the ships, which he thought of as “immense buildings that move”. When they sailed, he watched them cross the water and imagined that they were flying. These notions converged in his mind to form an idea of buildings as structures that “fought against gravity”, as “miracles”.
