I’m a learner. I try to soak up as much information as possible. But, here’s the kicker.

I’m a learner. I try to soak up as much information as possible. But, here’s the kicker. I often let that information stay in my head rather than soaking it up in my heart to produce transformation. Thus, intentionality, repetition, and the Holy Spirit are my friends. Instead of storing away the information in “hopes” of doing something with it later, I turn to them.

I intentionally make time to dig deeper, ask how to practically put this into practice, make a plan to put it into practice, and to ask the Holy Spirit what else.

Then I become Ms. post-it anywhere and everywhere. Reminders are key. By my bed you’ll see my goals, ways to seek intimacy with God, ways to be guarded and a “what-if” plan, and the scripture I’m memorizing for the week. My bathroom mirror holds promises to stand on and by my door there is the South African flag and the poster of Hope House kids. My phone has pictures of Lindo. I need to see, read, meditate, memorize, and be reminded in order to let these truths penetrate my heart and make that journey.

Finally, I make sure that I’m looking to Him and not getting distracted or relying on my own “plans” or practical steps. I desire to live a life that is sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s leading in ALL areas including what I’m learning and how I live out what I’m learning. I want to be a doer of what I learn and hear.

In conclusion: “So let us know, let us press on to know the Lord.”

I came upon a discovery, or revelation one might say, but until recently I had not completely decide

I came upon a discovery, or revelation one might say, but until recently I had not completely decided whether or not I wanted to reiterate it. My conclusion, is of our uncanny resemblance to that of Roman culture. Let me explain. In the Roman culture, one’s form of entertainment varied from that of the Colosseum, where men were torn to pieces by animals or worse–each other, or possibly even a play of sorts which were none the better. Now we strive for very similar forms of entertainment. “Never,” you argue, “we are not that barbaric.” Quite the contrary I must say, with films like Hostel I & II, or the Saw saga, or as I have heard websites built exclusively for “snuff films”, which if you lack the knowledge of their substance, feel lucky you are innocent in that respect. I also beg you wholeheartedly, to abstain from tainting your innocence by looking them up. But, back to the matter at hand, though these atrocities are not as horrific as say watching a man’s arm ripped from it’s socket by a starving tiger, just the same they are barbaric. Also an ironic twist, our current diplomatic policies toward foreign countries are oddly reminiscent of Roman policies as well–”you will be like us, or submit.” Now, I’m not saying that’s literally what our view-point is, but it is fairly similar. We, this nation, has constantly tried to save country after country and in these efforts have also tried to establish our form of government in the process. Some of these were marginally successful–Korea–and others were not–Vietnam. Looking back at the Romans, they were so hell-bent on conquering the world around them that they neglected their world. In the same light this nation focuses so much on foreign policies and affairs that the domestic affairs go unnoticed or forgotten, or worse just thrown out as if it doesn’t matter. For example, for so long now they have tried to fix the government in the Iranian peninsula and the surrounding areas, yet here in the United States, our government has gone completely to the dogs. The rights we once cherished so greatly have now been defiled with the reinstatement of the Patriot Act. The thousands upon thousands of people who are starving and homeless are neglected. Housings are started and finished almost every month, but they cost in 100 thousands or more, prices which the middle and lower class-classes which fill out much of the United States population cannot afford. A grave disappointment. If you look at history because of these things Rome….fell. It collapsed in on itself. This nation could do the same if we don’t watch out.

Author : SANTOSO, ARTA

I finally had a chance to get back to this project after almost a week delayed. This week has been c

I finally had a chance to get back to this project after almost a week delayed. This week has been crazy and it’s really a joy being able to come back to do what I really like.

This time is my creative time again – so instead of picking ideas from the Verrine book, I decided to create a verrine myself with my own “recipe”. I have this idea in mind from last week to create something with black sticky rice topped with thick coconut cream and a dash of mint on top. Guess what – I can’t find the sticky rice. I tried local groceries and asian groceries and they just don’t have it in stock. What can you do, I just find a substitute. I found this black tapioca pearl – I am actually glad that I didn’t find the sticky rice and found this tapioca pearl instead. They are chunky round shaped and has a reflective surface , which can be pretty to be photographed (in my opinion anyway).

honey coated tapioca pearl with mini orange slices

Food Creation and Preparation

The tapioca pearl need to be hard boiled and cool down to room temperature, otherwise the inside of the verrine will become foggy. The pearls are sticky too (especially after you coated them with honey!) so I need to carefully arrange them into the verrine otherwise the honey will be everywhere.

Initially I wanted to put another layer on top of the pearls. I did try to put a layer of thick coconut cream on top but that was a bad idea. The cream just sink down into the pearls. I tried to put some gelatine powder into the cream to make it firmer but then they looked like a white blob of glue sitting on top of the pearl. I abandoned the idea.

Then I saw an orange laying around and I thought, why not use it? I’m thinking the honey coated tapioca will give quite a sweet tast so a little bit of sour taste from the orange will make it more balanced. Sometime what you pre-visualise is not what you end up with

The Prop

I decided to go trio this time. The alternate arrangement of the orange slices and the toohtpick works quite well I think. I really like the toothpick. The idea didn’t come straight away. At first I was using a red wooden spoon that I just bought from Japan City. But I just don’t think the colours work together (ie orange and deep red). I tried wooden chopstick (I know using chopstick sounds funny but I was thinking since the dessert is in pearl shapes maybe we can use chopstick to pick it up – something a bit different!). But that too didn’t seem to work well. However it leads me to the final idea. What else can I use to pick up the pearls but not using the usual boring spoon? Yeah toothpicks!! The part on the shot where the toothpicks criss-crossing each other is my favaourite part. The orange slices on the corner is coated with honey so they are more “shiny”.

Kitchen mess

The Shooting

Camera setting was set to F5.6 1/8 ISO100. Again I’m using my usual 100mm macro since I want to get close. I set the main focus to the orange slice. I also make sure that the main subject’s toothpick is on the same focus plane as the orange slice so both the orange slice and the toothpick are in focus (if only I have a TS lens!). The camera is looking down at the subject from 25 cm elevation. Light is set at 3 o’clock this time, up high shining down at the subject. This has the advantage that the light doesn’t form a reflection on the glass itself.

lighting setup

Before the shoot as usual I was tossing between high key and low key shot. My first instict tells me that high key would be more appropriate since the pearls are black-ish and you need something to constrast it against. Black on black is always harder to do. But I really feel that this sweet verrine is a dinner dessert. So call me contrarian, I go with the low key setup. I still need something bright to constrast the pearls against, so I put them on a white serving plate. That brings out the pearls part quite well I think. I particularly like the part where the pearls are pressed on the glass wall creating a dark black circles on the glass surface. Anyway, I also frame the setup so that most of the main orange slice is against the black background, giving higher constrast.

Observation

Making the background completely dark was a challange in the kitchen. There are always something that reflects the light – the wall nearby, the windows etc. So I PS the background to make it black. As you can see, I used my black T-shirts to cover the bench to create a dark surface. It works alright, but I think perspex will work better. I’m gonna get some black perspex next time.

As usual you can see the reflection of the serving plate on the glass. I could have avoided the reflection by using a darker colour serving plate but it won’t give a high contrast between the black pearls and the background. It’s a trade-off I guess.

I’m really into this kind of setup lately where there are a repetition of the same subject coming from the background and leads the eye towards the main subject in front. You can find similar setup concept on my past work on profiteroles and zucchini puree. I has the effect that the main subject is moving from the background, following the line of repetition towards your eyes and come into focus. It’s all about psychology isn’t it.

What one thing that separates the successful ones from the unsuccessful ones?

What one thing that gives the great men and women the power that projects them wherever they go and whatever they do?

Why the successful men and women of all times are often called as “Wizards” or “sorcerers” in the line that they had chosen and what made them to master their skills in their line of profession?

Let it be revealed here in the words of the great motivational guru Anthony Robbins,

“Repetition is the mother of skill.”

Knowing your goals is like knowing the target you want to hit. But knowing a target is one thing and knowing how to hit the target effectively is another facet of your marvelous, successful journey! And it could very well be an entertaining and enjoyable experience.

Every man and woman can become a true master in whatever he or she has decided to pursue as a profession when he/she has the discipline and patience to keep on repeating the skills and knowledge needed to be a “Sorcerer” in the field.

Tiger woods was practicing and honing his skills again and again when the world was sleeping! He was repeating that even while he was sleeping unconsciously. His swing was getting better and better with each attempt be it physically or in his mind and his hands were crying loudly “I deserve the US open, PGA championship and so on!” —he was actually surpassing every other giant in his field when he was REPEATING the same routine over and over and over!!

Even the genetics would lose the match against the industrious man or woman and of course, even the genetics cannot help one if he/she doesn’t repeat and keep on sharpening their skills.

Though many people know the power of doing or repeating the thing in which they want to shine and be a master, they don’t do it just because they find it boring and REALLY DON’T realize the results that could show up as a result of such a continuous training. But not you. Just have the discipline to do what others wouldn’t do and you’ll have what others don’t have!

You had every potential given to you even before your eyelids opened and saw this world for the first time. You have what it takes to become a champion like a Tiger Woods or a Laila Ali. Just realize the massive power sleeping in you and develop it to a great level by repetition that one day it would be acknowledged all over the world and you’d be in the same list of the greats!

Do you want to improve your math profiency? Then keep practicing solving the problems again and again and consolidating the concepts!

Do you want to be a one-of-a-kind computer programmer? Then keep typing the codes and learning the concepts again and again!

Do you want to be a marvelous communicator and want to improve your inter personal skill? Then learn the techniques and keep on applying them over and over!!

Do you want to be known as a “legend” in your business or in your job? Then keep practicing the fine principles of business and the good skills needed to lift you up everyday again and again!

Do you want to be a tremendous dancer? Then keep practicing the moves and in the process make your body to “Obey” you whatever it is that you want it to do!

Or you may want to be a scientist, or a “Miss Universe” or a world renowned doctor or a top notch engineer or an awe-inspiring actor!

The one practice that intersects all the professional achievements is “Repetition”. After you have done your part of repetition the universe will do its part of repetition by handing you the success again and again throughout your life!!

If others have scoffed at you, don’t let that experience to topple you but rather keep on doing the thing in which you have failed and that same people someday would be astonished by your vast transformation and success!!

Wish you all the riches to come with God’s blessings

Peter Anand
