The Genetic Opera

off 0.4%, following lower markets in Europe. The greenback has tended to rally when economic fears are on the rise and to fall when investors are more inclined to take on risk.

“Given the recent improvements in the housing and manufacturing sectors along with the rise in consumer spending and equity prices, the Fed has plenty of reasons to be upbeat,” Kathy Lien, director of currency research at Global Forex Trading, wrote in an email. “If they become more optimistic, it would initially help to drive the dollar higher but given the schizophrenic nature of the currency market, a rise in risk appetite may erase the dollar’s gains.”

Also under discussion is the central bank’s mortgage-debt buying programs, which many credit with keeping mortgage rates low for borrowers and supporting the struggling housing sector. Some analysts expect those purchases to be slowed down to last longer, much like the Fed declared for its Treasury-buying program last month.

Still, dollar weakness has been exacerbated in recent weeks amid signs the greenback is taking on a role as a funding currency for carry trades, in which investors sell a low-yielding currency and purchase higher-yielding currencies.

Also this week is a summit of the leaders of the Group of 20 Global economic powers, which gets under way Thursday in Pittsburgh.

Nervousness before that meeting has also spurred traders to exit pro-risk trades, said Boris Schlossberg, director of currency research at GFT.

“If the talk out of the G20 actually turns into some concrete policy action, the news of further government regulation of capital markets could cast a pall over risk assets and precipitate a profit taking sell off that many analysts have been anticipating for weeks,” Schlossberg said.

How many times you put your best effort in making a project only to be ridiculed during the presenta

How many times you put your best effort in making a project only to be ridiculed during the presentation with words like “This is shit”.”WTF is this” by the teachers. OK OK! I am exaggerating, but it is a truth that students who put their best don’t get their reward. Most of such students put their sincere effort just because they like their work and not just for marks. To add insult to injury, those who copy-paste the projects get great reviews.

The situation is no different in Computer Science branch too. We loose hundreds of such talents students just because they became de-moralized after poor feedback for their project by the faculty. They should realize that hard-work in college hardly pays off. They should put their coding efforts in competitions like “Google Code Jam”, “CodeChef” or some open-source projects.

Now the million dollar question is “How to handle the college projects”? Let me explain with an example.

Project: Create a source Control Management or Revision Control System for efficient code management for single person project.

Technology: Python with SQLite for client.

Additional Information: There need not be a central repo to push the changes, local commits are enough. The name of the binary should be srcs or “Simple Revision Control System“

Creating the Project:

In real world development, people would ask you to make tons of documents like SRS, Technical Specification etc before moving on to coding. These things simply don’t exist in colleges. All you need to do for your project to be ready is shown below.

You need to run the following commands on any Debian based distro (probably Ubuntu)

$ sudo apt-get install bzr

$ sudo ln -s /usr/bin/bzr /usr/bin/srcs

….. and it’s done. Now let’s start using it

Creating the repository

$ cd ~ && mkdir code && cd code

$ srcs init

Creating files

$ touch file1.c

$ touch README

Adding and committing

$ srcs add file1.c README

$ srcs commit file1.c README -m "First Commit"

So your project part is complete. Now come let’s handle the typical vivas

Conversation 1:

Teacher: Why have you used Python?

You: Python is _______________(put all sorts of Python advocacy here)__________________

Teacher: What. Explain it clearly!

You: So that you can’t make the head or tail of the codebase.

Conversation 2:

Teacher: Explain your project briefly!

You: My project is to create a system to manage the code. Keep revisions, find the differences between two commits

Teacher: How to keep differences?

You: I save the code at regular intervals, or say commit it to the repo, so that I can access any file any time if I make a mistake

Teacher: Why the **** do you need to make such a big software to keep copies. Can’t you just use “Save As(s)” every time you need revision of a file?

Who is eligible to claim the $6,500 tax credit?
Qualified move-up or repeat home buyers purchasing any kind of home are eligible to claim this credit.

What is the definition of a move-up or repeat home buyer?
The law defines a tax credit qualified move-up home buyer (“long-time resident”) as a home owner who has owned and resided in a home for at least five consecutive years of the eight years prior to the purchase date. For married taxpayers, the law tests the homeownership history of both the home buyer and his/her spouse. Repeat home buyers do not have to purchase a home that is more expensive than their previous home to qualify for the tax credit.

How is the amount of the tax credit determined?
The tax credit is equal to 10 percent of the home’s purchase price up to a maximum of $6,500. Purchases of homes priced above $800,000 are not eligible for the tax credit.

Are there any income limits for claiming the tax credit?
Yes. The income limit for single taxpayers is $125,000; the limit is $225,000 for married taxpayers filing a joint return. The tax credit amount is reduced for buyers with a modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) above those limits. The phaseout range for the tax credit program is equal to $20,000. That is, the tax credit amount is reduced to zero for taxpayers with MAGI of more than $145,000 (single) or $245,000 (married) and is reduced proportionally for taxpayers with MAGIs between these amounts.

What is “modified adjusted gross income”?
Modified adjusted gross income or MAGI is defined by the IRS. To find it, a taxpayer must first determine “adjusted gross income” or AGI. AGI is total income for a year minus certain deductions (known as “adjustments” or “above-the-line deductions”), but before itemized deductions from Schedule A or personal exemptions are subtracted. On Forms 1040 and 1040A, AGI is the last number on page 1 and the first number on page 2 of the form. For Form 1040-EZ, AGI appears on line 4 (as of 2007). Note that AGI includes all forms of income including wages, salaries, interest income, dividends and capital gains. To determine modified adjusted gross income (MAGI), add to AGI certain amounts of foreign-earned income. See IRS Form 5405 for more details.

If my modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) is above the limit, do I qualify for any tax credit?
Possibly. It depends on your income. Partial credits of less than $6,500 are available for some taxpayers whose MAGI exceeds the phaseout limits.

Can you give me an example of how the partial tax credit is determined?
Just as an example, assume that a married couple has a modified adjusted gross income of $235,000. The applicable phaseout to qualify for the tax credit is $225,000, and the couple is $10,000 over this amount. Dividing $10,000 by the phaseout range of $20,000 yields 0.5. When you subtract 0.5 from 1.0, the result is 0.5. To determine the amount of the partial first-time home buyer tax credit that is available to this couple, multiply $6,500 by 0.5. The result is $3,250.Here’s another example: assume that an individual home buyer has a modified adjusted gross income of $138,000. The buyer’s income exceeds $125,000 by $13,000. Dividing $13,000 by the phaseout range of $20,000 yields 0.65. When you subtract 0.65 from 1.0, the result is 0.35. Multiplying $6,500 by 0.35 shows that the buyer is eligible for a partial tax credit of $2,275.Please remember that these examples are intended to provide a general idea of how the tax credit might be applied in different circumstances. You should always consult your tax advisor for information relating to your specific circumstances.

How is this home buyer tax credit different from the tax credit that Congress enacted in July of 2008? How is this different than the rules established in early 2009?
The previous tax credits applied only to first-time home buyers and were for different amounts of money.

How do I claim the tax credit? Do I need to complete a form or application? Are there documentation requirements?
You claim the tax credit on your federal income tax return. Specifically, home buyers should complete IRS Form 5405 to determine their tax credit amount, and then claim this amount on line 67 of the 1040 income tax form for 2009 returns (line 69 of the 1040 income tax form for 2008 returns). No other applications are required, and no pre-approval is necessary. However, you will want to be sure that you qualify for the credit under the income limits and repeat home buyer tests. Note that you cannot claim the credit on Form 5405 for an intended purchase for some future date; it must be a completed purchase. Home buyers must attach a copy of their HUD-1 settlement form (closing statement) to Form 5405 as proof of the completed home purchase.

What types of homes will qualify for the tax credit?
Any home that will be used as a principal residence will qualify for the credit, provided the home is purchased for a price less than or equal to $800,000. This includes single-family detached homes, attached homes like townhouses and condominiums, manufactured homes (also known as mobile homes) and houseboats. The definition of principal residence is identical to the one used to determine whether you may qualify for the $250,000 / $500,000 capital gain tax exclusion for principal residences. It is important to note that you cannot purchase a home from, among other family members, your ancestors (parents, grandparents, etc.), your lineal descendants (children, grandchildren, etc.) or your spouse or your spouse’s family members. Please consult with your tax advisor for more information. Also see IRS Form 5405.

I read that the tax credit is “refundable.” What does that mean?
The fact that the credit is refundable means that the home buyer credit can be claimed even if the taxpayer has little or no federal income tax liability to offset. Typically this involves the government sending the taxpayer a check for a portion or even all of the amount of the refundable tax credit. For example, if a qualified home buyer expected, notwithstanding the tax credit, federal income tax liability of $5,000 and had tax withholding of $4,000 for the year, then without the tax credit the taxpayer would owe the IRS $1,000 on April 15th. Suppose now that the taxpayer qualified for the $6,500 home buyer tax credit. As a result, the taxpayer would receive a check for $5,500 ($6,500 minus the $1,000 owed).

Instead of buying a new home from a home builder, I hired a contractor to construct a home on a lot that I already own. Do I still qualify for the tax credit?
Yes. For the purposes of the home buyer tax credit, a principal residence that is constructed by the home owner is treated by the tax code as having been “purchased” on the date the owner first occupies the house. In this situation, the date of first occupancy must be after November 6, 2009 and on or before April 30, 2010 (or by June 30, 2010, provided a binding sales contract was in force by April 30, 2010).In contrast, for newly-constructed homes bought from a home builder, eligibility for the tax credit is determined by the settlement date. Be sure to check with a tax advisor in cases where a HUD-1 form is not used at settlement to be sure you have sufficient documentation to attach to IRS Form 5405.

Can I claim the tax credit if I finance the purchase of my home under a mortgage revenue bond (MRB) program?
Yes. The tax credit can be combined with an MRB home buyer program.

I am not a U.S. citizen. Can I claim the tax credit?
Perhaps. Anyone who is not a nonresident alien (as defined by the IRS) and who has owned and resided in a principal residence in the United States for at least five consecutive years of the eight years prior to the purchase date can claim the tax credit if they meet the income limits. For married taxpayers, the law tests the homeownership history of both the home buyer and his/her spouse. The IRS provides a definition of “nonresident alien” in IRS Publication 519.

Is a tax credit the same as a tax deduction?
No. A tax credit is a dollar-for-dollar reduction in what the taxpayer owes. That means that a taxpayer who owes $6,500 in income taxes and who receives an $6,500 tax credit would owe nothing to the IRS.A tax deduction is subtracted from the amount of income that is taxed. Using the same example, assume the taxpayer is in the 15 percent tax bracket and owes $6,500 in income taxes. If the taxpayer receives a $6,500 deduction, the taxpayer’s tax liability would be reduced by $975 (15 percent of $6,500), or lowered from $6,500 to $5,525.

Is there a way for a home buyer to access the money allocable to the credit sooner than waiting to file their 2009 or 2010 tax return?
Yes. Prospective home buyers who believe they qualify for the tax credit are permitted to reduce their income tax withholding. Reducing tax withholding (up to the amount of the credit) will enable the buyer to accumulate cash by raising his/her take home pay. This money can then be applied to the downpayment.Buyers should adjust the withholding amount on their W-4 via their employer or through their quarterly estimated tax payment. IRS Publication 919 contains rules and guidelines for income tax withholding. Prospective home buyers should note that if income tax withholding is reduced and the tax credit qualified purchase does not occur, then the individual would be liable for repayment to the IRS of income tax and possible interest charges and penalties. In addition, rule changes made as part of the economic stimulus legislation allow home buyers to claim the tax credit and participate in a program financed by tax-exempt bonds. As a result, some state housing finance agencies have introduced programs that provide short-term second mortgage loans that may be used to fund a downpayment. Prospective home buyers should check with their state housing finance agency to see if such a program is available in their community. To date, 18 state agencies have announced tax credit assistance programs, and more are expected to follow suit. The National Council of State Housing Agencies (NCSHA) has compiled a list of such programs, which can be found here.

HUD allows “monetization” of the tax credit. What does that mean?
It means that HUD will allow buyers using FHA-insured mortgages to apply their anticipated tax credit toward their home purchase immediately rather than waiting until they file their 2009 or 2010 income taxes to receive a refund. These funds may be used for certain downpayment and closing cost expenses.Under the guidelines announced by HUD, non-profits and FHA-approved lenders are allowed to give home buyers short-term loans. The guidelines also allow government agencies, such as state housing finance agencies, to facilitate home sales by providing longer term loans secured by second mortgages.Housing finance agencies and other government entities may also issue tax credit loans, which home buyers may use to satisfy the FHA 3.5 percent downpayment requirement.

In addition, approved FHA lenders can purchase a home buyer’s anticipated tax credit to pay closing costs and downpayment costs above the 3.5 percent downpayment that is required for FHA-insured homes.

More information about the guidelines is available on the NAHB web site. Read the HUD mortgagee letter (pdf) and an explanation of the FHA Mortgagee Letter on Tax Credit Monetization (pdf). An FAQ about monetization (pdf) is available at the NAHB web site.

If I’m qualified for the tax credit and buy a home in 2009 (or 2010), can I apply the tax credit against my 2008 (or 2009) tax return?
Yes. The law allows taxpayers to choose (“elect”) to treat qualified home purchases in 2009 (or 2010) as if the purchase occurred on December 31, 2008 (or if in 2010, December 31, 2009). This means that the previous year’s income limit (MAGI) applies and the election accelerates when the credit can be claimed. A benefit of this election is that a home buyer in 2009 or 2010 will know their prior year MAGI with certainty, thereby helping the buyer know whether the income limit will reduce their credit amount.Taxpayers buying a home who wish to claim it on their prior year tax return, but who have already submitted their tax return to the IRS, may file an amended return claiming the tax credit using Form 1040X. You should consult with a tax professional to determine how to arrange this.

For a home purchase in 2009 or 2010, can I choose whether to treat the purchase as occurring in the prior or present year, depending on in which year my credit amount is the largest?
Yes. If the applicable income phaseout would reduce your home buyer tax credit amount in the present year and a larger credit would be available using the prior year MAGI amounts, then you can choose the year that yields the largest credit amount.

The discussion of the initiatives, including a boost in Transportation spending and an extension of an expiring tax credit for first-time homebuyers, comes as the White House is balancing rising concern about unemployment and a budget deficit the Congressional Budget Office estimates will total $US1.6 trillion ($1.9 trillion) for 2009, and $US1.4 trillion in 2010.

Administration officials have told allies in Congress that a broader Transportation bill, and extensions of a homebuyer tax credit and unemployment benefits are all on the table, a Senate aide said.

Representative Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, who chairs the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee that is tasked with holding the party’s House majority in next year’s midterm elections, said additional Transportation funding would be popular among Democratic lawmakers.

“If there was to be another round of stimulus, additional infrastructure would be at the top of the list,” Van Hollen said in an interview. Money for roads, transit and bridges would be a priority.

Contradictory missions

In considering the measures, the administration has to reconcile two potentially contradictory missions: combating rising unemployment through government intervention and the need to hold deficits down.

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs yesterday highlighted those political sensitivities, saying there “were no plans” for a second stimulus like the $US787 billion package passed earlier this year. Instead, he said, the administration is looking at “extensions” of existing programs.

“The economic team is certainly looking at and working on any way that we can create more jobs,” Gibbs said.

The items under consideration include an increase in infrastructure spending through expiring transportation legislation that Congress must reauthorize in the coming months, the Senate aide said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Other steps being weighed include an extension of a tax credit of up to $US8,000 for first-time homebuyers that is due to expire later this year, and a renewal of a tax benefit for net operating losses that would benefit small businesses, the aide said.

`A stimulus’

“Clearly these things are a stimulus,” said Dean Baker, co-director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research in Washington, who has called for more stimulus spending. “There’s no two ways about it.”

The Obama administration isn’t near a final decision on additional measures, said Jen Psaki, a White House spokeswoman.

“As they continue to explore the best options, any notion that we are any farther along than preliminary discussions about new proposals is wildly inaccurate,” she said.

The Labor Department Reported last week that unemployment reached 9.8 per cent in September, the highest level since 1983. Nonfarm payrolls dropped by 263,000, a steeper drop than economic forecasters had expected.

At the same time, the federal deficit has risen sharply because of this year’s stimulus package and bailouts for the banking industry, auto industry and Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. While the Obama administration has pledged that a health-care overhaul it is pushing through Congress won’t widen the deficit, it has stirred concerns among fiscal conservatives.

`More difficult’

“More of a stimulus package is much more difficult at this point than it was in February,” said Julian Zelizer, a professor of public affairs at Princeton University in New Jersey. “The deficit can become a political straitjacket to the Democrats.”

Obama and his aides have stressed that they expect employment growth to lag in an economic recovery. They now confront rising joblessness as they move toward midterm elections in November 2010.

Since 1945, the party that controls the White House has lost an average of 16 House seats in a president’s first midterm election, according to the Cook Political Report, a nonpartisan publication in Washington. The Democrats have 256 seats in the chamber, compared with 178 for the Republicans.

30-day extension

The federal transportation funding program, which provides routine federal aid for highway construction and other transportation projects, expired Sept. 30 and is operating under a 30-day extension passed by Congress.

While the transportation funding law typically is renewed in multiyear increments, the Obama administration has instead proposed an 18-month extension, a move backed by the Senate public works panel. That time frame limits the scope of the bill to the period in which economic forecasters expect high unemployment.

Representative James Oberstar, a Minnesota Democrat who chairs the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, has proposed a six-year $US500 billion highway and transit bill. Most of the measure is financed through federal gasoline taxes, which haven’t been raised since 1993. At the current level, the tax would only generate about $US350 billion over six years.

A six-year bill would be “a better stimulus than a temporary, one-time, infusion of cash,” said Jim Berard, a spokesman for Oberstar.

Van Hollen said Congress’ first step would likely be to move forward with an extension of unemployment benefits.

“We don’t want to get ahead ourselves here,” he said.

How many homes are Lost? What are banks doing?
With the Jobless rate over 10%, and Coast filled areas are suffering. The Midwest they say not as bad, but with small company owners closing, with no unemployment benefits, and no jobs they a joining the ranks of the poor. No money and will soon be walking out of the homes. During the last 20 years many business owners pushed to expand and take advantage of the every growing market. With the increase of employee benefits, many of them became upper middle class incomes, and everyone was buying a bigger more impressive home. The market was growing and greet with it, the banks gambled with money and the world caught up to it all. Then the Government steps in to save the system, and started with the Banks, giving them the funds to pay off the bad debt that they gambled with and lost.
Hopes high many small business people found that the lines of credit that they had performed to over the years was gone. The banks stop loaning money on lines and then the company owners borrowed from credit cards, and family, using whatever they could to keep the company open. Then the layoffs and dropping the long term plans and cutting cost thus, the loss of jobs, the stress on Commercial Real Estate now trends could show up to 50% vacancy in some cities.
This all feeds the downturn in the economy, with job lost and the radar is not picking up the real results, banks have more homes and than they can place on the market and not destroy the price of homes and increase losses. More homes are lost than the records show, President now admits that the jobless rate will go higher, and that they must see that the bank’s loan money to small companies.

First Time Homebuyer Tax Credit Extended Into 2010! Plus…A New Tax Credit for Certain Existing Home Owners! It’s official. President Obama has signed a bill that extends the tax credit for first-time homebuyers (FTHBs) into the first half of 2010. This program had been scheduled to expire on November 30, 2009. In addition to extending the tax credit of up to $8,000 through June 30, 2010, the extension measure also opens up opportunities for others who are not buying a home for the first time. So Who Gets What? The program that has existed for FTHBs remains intact with the one exception that more people are now eligible based on an increase in the amount of income someone may now earn. Additionally, the program now gives those who already own a residence some additional reasons to move to a new home. This incentive comes in the form of a tax credit of up to $6,500 for qualified purchasers who have owned and occupied a primary residence for a period of five consecutive years during the last eight years. Deadlines In order to qualify for the credit, all contracts need to be in effect no later than April 30, 2010 and close no later than June 30, 2010. Higher Income Caps in Effect The amount of income someone can earn and qualify for the full amount of the credit has been increased. Single tax filers who earn up to $125,000 are eligible for the total credit amount. Those who earn more than this cap can receive a partial credit. However, single filers who earn $145,000 and above are ineligible. Joint filers who earn up to $225,000 are eligible for the total credit amount. Those who earn more than this cap can receive a partial credit. However, joint filers who earn $245,000 and above are ineligible. Maximum Purchase Price Qualifying buyers may purchase a property with a maximum sales price of $800,000. First-Time Homebuyer Tax Credit – Frequently Asked Questions Here are answers to some commonly asked questions about the tax credit. What is a tax credit? A tax credit is a direct reduction in tax liability owed by an individual to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). In the event no taxes are owed, the IRS will issue a check for the amount of the tax credit an individual is owed. Unlike the tax credit that existed in 2008, this credit does not require repayment unless the home, at any time in the first 36 months of ownership, is no longer an individual’s primary residence. What is the tax credit for first-time homebuyers (FTHBs)? An eligible homebuyer may request from the IRS a tax credit of up to $8,000 or 10% of the purchase price for a home. If the amount of the home purchased is $75,000, the maximum amount the credit can be is $7,500. If the amount of the home purchased is $100,000, the amount of the credit may not exceed $8,000. Who is eligible for the FTHB tax credit? Anyone who has not owned a primary residence in the previous 36 months, prior to closing and the transfer of title, is eligible. This applies both to single taxpayers and married couples. In the case where there is a married couple, if either spouse has owned a primary residence in the last 36 months, neither would qualify. In the case where an individual has owned property that has not been a primary residence, such as a second home or investment property, that individual would be eligible. As mentioned above, the tax credit has been expanded so that existing homeowners who have owned and occupied a primary residence for a period of five consecutive years during the last eight years are now eligible for a tax credit of up to $6,500. How do I claim the credit? For those taking advantage of the tax credit in 2009, you may choose to either apply for the credit with your 2009 tax return or you may apply for the credit sooner by filing an amended 2008 tax return with Form 5405 (http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f5405.pdf). Can you claim the tax credit in advance of purchasing a property? No. The IRS has recently begun prosecuting people who have claimed credits where a purchase had not taken place. Can a taxpayer claim a credit if the property is purchased from a seller with seller financing and the seller retains title to the property? Yes. In situations where the buyer purchases the property, even though the seller retains legal title, the taxpayer may file for the credit. Examples of this would include a land contract, contract for deed, etc. According to the IRS, factors that would demonstrate the ownership of the property would include: 1. the right of possession, 2. the right to obtain legal title upon full payment of the purchase price, 3. the right to construct improvements, 4. the obligation to pay property taxes, 5. the risk of loss, 6. the responsibility to insure the property and 7. the duty to maintain the property. Are there other restrictions to taking the credit? Yes. According to the IRS, if any of the following describe your situation, a credit would not be due. You buy your home from a close relative. This includes your spouse, parent, grandparent, child or grandchild. You do not use the home as your principal residence. You sell your home before the end of the year. You are a nonresident alien. You are, or were, eligible to claim the District of Columbia first-time homebuyer credit for any taxable year. (This does not apply for a home purchased in 2009.) Your home financing comes from tax-exempt mortgage revenue bonds. (This does not apply for a home purchased in 2009.) You owned a principal residence at any time during the three years prior to the date of purchase of your new home. For example, if you bought a home on July 1, 2009, you cannot take the credit for that home if you owned, or had an ownership interest in, another principal residence at any time from July 2, 2006, through July 1, 2009. Can you buy a home from a step-relative and be eligible for the credit? Yes. Provided the person you are buying a home from is not a direct blood relative, the purchase would be allowed. Can parent(s) who will not live in the property cosign for a mortgage for their child and the child that is a qualifying FTHB still be eligible for the credit? Yes. Can a separated spouse who has not owned a home for four years qualify for the FTHB tax credit if the spouse has owned a property anytime in the last three years? No. However, the spouse may be eligible for the repeat buyer credit. The best path to take in any situation regarding income taxes is to speak with a professional tax preparer or CPA. If you have any questions that fall outside the situations here, give me a call and if you do not have an accountant to speak with, I can refer you to one.

The decision to step back from the brink marked the end of a six-year binge of drug and alcohol abuse that by then had Cost Junor his marriage and a career that paid him as much as 1 million pounds ($1.9 million) a year. He was out of work, having already walked away from both his analyst job at BT Alex. Brown and a subsequent position in a dot-com venture. “I burned through everything,” Junor says. “I knew there was a choice — and the choice was to hang from that tree or not.”

His story reflects the cocaine use that medical experts say is rampant in the City, London’s financial district. It’s a habit that often goes hand in hand with heavy drinking. Junor says he and his mates wanted to maintain the thrill they felt at work as they poured into the Square Mile’s pubs and clubs after a day of getting high on finance.

“It’s the same rush from doing a deal and doing cocaine,” Junor, 45, says. “The adulation from doing a deal spills into going for a beer and then a party — it’s an amorphous blob of energy.” Everyone knows about the City’s drug problem, recovering addicts say. Bosses turn a blind eye to drugs, as long as you’re making money for your firm — and until recently, making big money was easy to do.

Professionals in the detox business say bankers have swamped them with calls since the financial crisis widened a year ago. The Causeway Retreat, an addiction and mental health hospital for professionals on a secluded island 40 miles (64 kilometers) east of London, has 15 people on the waiting list for its 18-bed facility.

While few walk away from addiction as dramatically as Junor, some bankers are questioning whether the diminished rewards of the City are worth sacrificing their health, says Philip Hopley, a psychiatrist who runs a clinic at the Lloyd’s of London insurance building to be in the neighborhood where his patients work.

“Doing cocaine or drinking heavily is part of the City culture; you work hard and you play hard and you get rewarded because your bonus is fantastic,” says Hopley, a consultant at The Priory, a group that runs several mental health centers. When the bonuses are cut and many of your friends lose their livelihoods, things no longer look so good.

“A number of people now tell me: `I finally realize what a shit job I have got,”’ Hopley says. “`If it wasn’t for the bonus, I wouldn’t be working these hours and I wouldn’t be working with these people.”’ The number of people in the finance industry coming to see him has jumped by about 15 percent this year, he says.

Scientists say it’s no accident that trading and cocaine sometimes go together. Both involve taking risks and have a similar effect on the brain. Each activity raises dopamine levels, the organ’s feel-good chemical, according to Trevor Robbins, professor of cognitive neuroscience at the University of Cambridge. Dopamine surges when we take risks, such as going sky diving, betting on stock price movements or hiding in an office rest room and snorting a line of coke.

Studies show that people who take risks have low levels of dopamine receptors and try to shock the brain into a boost of the chemical through novel situations. They’re also more likely to become addicted, Robbins says.

Those who don’t seek help fast enough, like Investment manager Melvin Sabour, can become high-profile casualties.

Sabour, a managing director of AKN Investments Ltd., died of a cocaine overdose in February. Sabour was depressed over losses at his privately held firm, his girlfriend Kyara Dekker told an April inquest into his death. She discovered Sabour, 44, unconscious in the apartment they shared in Mayfair, the neighborhood of townhouses and luxury stores that’s home to money managers such as GLG Partners Inc. and Moore Capital Management LLC. Sabour was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene. A postmortem examination found that Sabour had a lethal level of metabolized cocaine in his blood and attributed his demise to drug

triggered heart failure.

“Cocaine can and does have a bad effect on the heart and it is quite a significant cause of death in men of younger age in this area of London,” coroner Paul Knapman told the inquest that determined the cause of Sabour’s death.

`Bamboozled’ by abuse

Drugs and alcohol played a role in the death of Darren Liddle, a 26-year-old fixed-income analyst at Credit Suisse Group AG in London in September 2007. Liddle, who spent two stints in a psychiatric hospital, went on a cocaine and alcohol binge at the Hilton hotel on London’s Park Lane just weeks after leaving the hospital for the second time. He sat on the ledge of his 19th-floor room, shaking and crying, for more than two hours before jumping to his death.

A coroner told an inquest in January 2008 that job pressures may have contributed to Liddle’s addictions. Credit Suisse declined to comment on the incident. Liddle’s father and brother didn’t respond to e-mails.

“Medical people are absolutely bamboozled by the level of abuse going on in the City and the extreme level of cocaine consumption,” says Brendan Quinn, The Causeway’s chief executive officer and a specialist nurse in recovery treatment. “More and more people are coming in, putting their hands up and saying: `I’ve got a problem and I need help.”’

The spread of cocaine in the City is driven by ample supplies at cheap prices. Cocaine, the glamour drug for jet- setters in the 1980s, has dropped in price to about 40 pounds a gram from almost 70 pounds a gram in 1997, according to figures from the U.K. Home Office. The price drop reflects dealers’ success in diluting the product and opening up new supply routes, authorities say.

The number of cocaine users in the U.K. has doubled to 1 million in the past decade, according to the United Nations World Drug Report 2009. The UN says British cocaine use peaked in 2007 — the year after City bonuses reached a record 8.8 billion pounds. While bonuses will plummet more than 60 percent from that high to 3.2 billion pounds this year, the London-based Centre for Economics and Business Research Ltd. predicts, there’s still plenty of money to buy cheap coke.

Some recovering addicts seek help in the company of others secretly struggling with a drug habit. On a rainy day in July in the wood-paneled vestry of St. Michael’s Church, a stone’s throw from the Bank of England, about a dozen bankers and traders sit around a mahogany table, talking about their addictions. With an antique wooden clock ticking in the background and takeout sandwiches on the table, men in pinstripe suits and women in conservative dresses — using first names only — share stories of the daily challenge of keeping clean.

One equities salesman and recovering addict at St. Michael’s says the greatest challenge to keeping clean comes at the end of a workday. “I could take you to four or five pubs a few minutes from here, walk up to the bar and buy a pint and a gram of coke,” says the man, who asked that he not be identified. “If you continue using, you become suicidal.”

A short underground train ride away, on a warm Thursday evening in August, thousands of bankers spill out of pubs and restaurants in London’s Canary Wharf, clutching cold beers and mixed drinks. At a bar around the corner from the London headquarters of Citigroup Inc., Credit Suisse and Morgan Stanley, a man repeatedly brushes his right nostril with his thumb while waiting for the barman. In the men’s restroom at the back of the bar, there’s a smudge of white powder on the wooden lid of the toilet. When the lid is wiped with a cloth from London-based testing company Drug-Aware Ltd., a bright-blue spot emerges, indicating a positive cocaine sample.

City bankers are merely a part of Britain’s culture of hard living. In September 2005, London’s Daily Mirror newspaper published photos purporting to show model Kate Moss snorting cocaine along with her then-boyfriend, musician Pete Doherty. Moss lost contracts with Burberry Group Plc and Chanel SA after the incident and attended a rehabilitation clinic in Arizona. Police didn’t charge Moss after questioning her about the incident.

At least one cocaine user at a financial firm was brazen enough to deal the drug from his desk. David Frith, a 28-year- old banker who worked at Barclays Plc’s office in Basingstoke, England, was convicted in 2007 of selling drugs from his desk and received a jail sentence of seven and a half years.

Police listened to Frith’s phone calls, which had been routinely recorded by the bank, and tracked his drug runners, according to a police spokesman. Barclays declined to comment on the incident. Frith’s Basingstoke-based solicitors, Talbot Walker LLP, declined to comment.

For some, the only escape from addiction is to quit their City career. Five years ago, Seth Freedman was a 24-year-old private-client broker executing equities trades for wealthy individuals when his coke habit became all-consuming. His dealer would roll up to his office in a station wagon with his latest stash.

“I was buzzing at work because of flickering screens, and I was managing lots of money,” Freedman says, as he smokes a cigarette and nurses a glass of water at a pub in North London. “When the market shuts, how do you keep that buzz going?”

In 2004, Freedman was sitting on the roof terrace of Coq d’Argent restaurant, in the heart of the Square Mile, with both a 30-year-old receptionist and a 16-year-old bottle of Lagavulin single-malt Scotch whisky in his lap. Thanks to the coke in his nose, he felt like the king of the City. Yet he woke up the next morning sporting two bleeding nostrils and a determination to get out of his drug hell.

`Money worship’

“I didn’t want to be caught up in the vicious circle of money worship by day, hard drugs by night, and little to no structure past the next trade I put on or the next gram I scored,” he says.

Instead of checking into rehab, Freedman decided to join the Israeli army — solidifying his connections with a country he had regularly visited as a child. In a 15-month tour, he used the enforced discipline of the military to get fit, learn to work as a team member and find a higher purpose than money. Freedman quit the Israeli army in 2006, disturbed by his stint in the West Bank, to write a book about his experiences called Binge Trading: The Real Inside Story of Cash, Cocaine and Corruption in the City (Penguin, 2009).

Freedman says City bosses push employees to take a short-term view on both trading and living. “You’re encouraged to be a gambler and a risk taker,” he says.

Middle-class secret

Junor, the addict who decided to seek help rather than hang himself, says his addictions thrived in the City. In 1999, he was earning 1 million pounds a year as an analyst at BT Alex. Brown and enjoying boozy lunches with clients. At that point, he only dabbled in cocaine.

“Everyone knew I had a drinking problem when I was in the City,” Junor says. “There were a couple of times where I showed up to meetings pissed, but that was Neill.”

After Deutsche Bank AG took over BT Alex. Brown in 1999, Junor helped establish the digital unit at Emap Plc, the U.K. publishing company that he had covered as an analyst. He began using coke heavily as he jetted between homes in Los Angeles, London and New York.

“I had a fire in me that was alcoholism and it had an accelerant thrown on it that was cocaine,” he says. “Cocaine allows you to keep drinking; it sobers you up.” He quit the publisher in 2001 and continued taking cocaine while living in a West London penthouse loft.

“I’d go to dinner parties where the host was chopping up a big line of coke on the cheese board,” he recalls. “Cocaine is London’s middle-class dirty secret. It’s pervasive.”

Junor sought treatment in a rehab center in southwest London without success. Then he tried yoga and Alcoholics Anonymous, attending 90 meetings in 90 days in 2006. He’s been clean ever since.

Salvation came two years ago when he moved to a farm in Dorset, southern England, to raise free-range chickens for a living. He still wakes up at 6 a.m. — only instead of boarding a train, he feeds the chickens raised in white sheds spread across his farm. Junor, who now earns less than 100,000 pounds a year, has remarried and his new wife recently gave birth to a daughter.

Some drug addicts hit rock bottom after losing their jobs. One former associate at a global law firm in Canary Wharf used his salary to support a decade-long cocaine habit. In January, he lost his job and had 30,000 pounds in tax-free severance money with nothing to do all day.

Family intervention

“I used lots of coke and gambled,” says the lawyer, 28, who asked to remain anonymous. “I had early onset of cocaine psychosis. You start to go mad. In the last three months of using, I saw, or imagined I saw, insects crawling on me.”

After an intervention from his family, the lawyer checked into a Priory detox clinic in London. The recovering lawyer is staying clean by going to daily addicts’ meetings.

At the recovery facility The Causeway, a helicopter pad sits next to a turreted Edwardian manor house, which sports a gym, a 200-year-old billiard table and a recording studio. Wealthy City bankers take the 20-minute helicopter ride to the secluded 400-acre (162-hectare) Osea Island and pay up to 10,000 pounds a week for treatment.

“Half the referrals this month have come in for people in the City who’ve lost their job, lost their car, everything, because they’ve leveraged themselves too high,” Quinn says. “We had a guy come to the island on a helicopter, and he took 6 grams of cocaine on the 20-minute journey.”

Hiding the problem

Although the major insurers, such as Aetna Inc., Axa SA and British United Provident Association Ltd., cover rehab programs at the Causeway and ensure confidentiality, Quinn says clients from the U.K.’s financial sector are reluctant to claim for their treatments.

“People won’t use their company insurance policy for mental health or addiction for fear that it will go back to their employer,” he says. “They go sick for a month and pay for it themselves with no record of it happening.”

Moved by the scarcity of treatment choices in Britain, private equity executive Jon Moulton tried to establish a modern rehab facility — an effort thwarted by the credit crisis. In October 2007, his charitable foundation opened Winthrop Hall, a 25-room hotel-style center in the Kent countryside, southeast of London. Many of Winthrop’s patients were from the City: lawyers, hedge fund managers and even the CEO of a major foreign bank who spent a lot of time in the U.K.

Cost issue

In January 2009, Winthrop Hall shut its doors as City job losses cut people’s ability to pay, says Moulton, who resigned as managing partner of London-based private equity firm Alchemy Partners LLP in September. The facility wasn’t up and running long enough to have treatments covered by private insurance companies.

“It’s one thing to spend 100 pounds on a consultation for a drug or alcohol problem,” he says. “It’s another thing to spend 800 pounds a day on residential rehab.”

A company that does not offer help to deal with a drug or alcohol problem could face a lawsuit for wrongful dismissal if it fires someone who has admitted an addiction, says Marco Martinez, a former Salomon Brothers Investment banker who checked himself into the Priory in 2000 to treat an addiction to alcohol and codeine.

“The driving force for banks is fear of litigation,” Martinez says. “If someone is selling drugs to a mate on the trading floor and the police find out about it, they will go after the people concerned, but they’ll also go after the employer.”

Online help

Martinez is now working with Tactus, a Dutch treatment provider, to offer banks a new online program to deal with alcohol abuse called lookatyourdrinking.com. He’s planning another Web site for drug users next year.

U.K. law requires employee consent for any drug testing. Although pre-employment urine testing is now standard in the City, says Jason Kennedy, of the London-based headhunting firm Kennedy Associates, the screenings only show evidence of cocaine use in the previous 72 hours.

“Drug tests are usually booked days in advance, which in theory gives a candidate time to clean himself up,” Kennedy says, adding he’s never had anyone fail a test.

Eight city meetings

Bankers seeking help can find it right around the corner. At the eight weekly meetings of drug addicts in the City, bankers talk about the daily struggle to stay clean.

In the safety of a lunchtime Cocaine Anonymous meeting in St. Michael’s Church, one woman with a blond bob and a fat string of pearls says she was terrified of attending for fear of bumping into a bank colleague. “Then I thought — who cares? I want to quit my job anyway,” she says, echoing the sentiments of ex-City fliers Junor and Freedman.

Those survivors say they’re speaking out now to show thousands of anonymous addicts still working in the City that it’s possible to escape before going to the brink of suicide. Although Junor has lost his London townhouse and no longer drives a Porsche, he’s regained something more valuable — his life.

Two slacker repo guys, one with girl troubles and one with brain troubles, decide to steal back all the cars they’ve repo’d to make a profit.

It’s a perfectly fine movie, the first official full-length made by director and star Ben Gourley. My only problem with it is there’s very little that stands out and makes it memorable. Sure it has Jason Mewes of Jay and Silent Bob fame, with short dark hair even, but his new character for this movie acts more or less the same as Jay. Gourley’s character Leon, while an actual sensitive and caring male soul, seems to have the fates conspiring against him once he finds a girl he actually wants. And since Leon is the manager of his apartment complex, there are several other zany characters to choose from to make life more interesting: the fat and sensitive ever-present computer geek, the strange and brooding but good-hearted hard-rock star, and so on. There was one thing I clearly recalled though: T.J.’s wife Dominique is a bit of a larger woman and ethnic too, and that’s slightly unusual for most movies, I was glad to see it here.

Not a bad movie at all, a good waste of time that may appreciate with age or theatrical release, Repo is the kind of movie that reminds us all how important it is to have life long friends who would do anything for you – whether you like it or not.

The dollar was slightly higher versus most other major rivals as well, with traders eyeing a mix of small gains among benchmark U.S. Stocks Indexes.

Japanese Finance Minister Hirohisa Fujii on Tuesday described the yen’s rise as “a little too sharp,” Dow Jones Newswires Reported, citing Kyodo News Agency. “We could take various steps if the (yen) reaches abnormal levels.”

The remarks marked the second straight day Fujii has made remarks aimed at undoing market perceptions the new Japanese government was comfortable with a rising yen.

“This change of tack could cause a lot of pain for speculators who have built up extreme long yen positions on the belief that the Japanese policy was changing,” said T.J. Marta, founder and chief strategist at Marta on the Markets, referring to positions that bet on the yen gaining.

“This shift in Japanese policy could tip the scales and trigger a cascading unwind of the positions built up in past weeks,” he wrote in a research note. That would benefit the U.S. dollar and gold.

One U.S. dollar bought 90.18 yen, up from 89.62 yen in North American trade late Monday.
A weak performance for Stocks on Wall Street also supported strength for the dollar, which has served as a safe-haven asset.

The dollar remained higher after the Conference Board said its consumer confidence index fell to 53.1 in September from 54.5 in August, reversing part of August’s nearly 7-point gain. Economists surveyed by MarketWatch were expecting the index to rise to 57, based on higher stock prices, lower gas prices and fewer layoffs.
But S&P’s Case-Shiller home price index still showed prices remain down 13.3% over the past year in the 20 U.S. cities surveyed.
Pound rebound

The British pound, however, posted a strong rebound versus the dollar and other currencies after the Confederation of British Industry’s measure of retail-sales activity rose to its highest level in five months.

The monthly distributive trades survey’s retail sales balance rose to 3 from -16 in August, far exceeding forecasts for a rise to -13.

Meanwhile, a Bank of England seminar with prominent City economists signaled no shifts in policy. Reports said BOE officials made clear there were no plans for an imminent change to the deposit rate the central bank pays on deposits held at the BOE by commercial banks.

The pound traded at $1.5950, up from $1.5876.

A cut in the rate would effectively penalize banks for holding excess reserves at the BOE, pushing them to move the reserves into other assets and potentially enhancing the impact of the central bank’s quantitative-easing program, which aims to boost the money supply and raise nominal spending.

Earlier, M4 money data showed weak growth in some key money-supply measures, adding to speculation the central bank could move to take additional steps in coming months.

Assalamu’alaikum Wr.Wb.

shell > sudo apt-get update

Ok, semua lancar. Mudah saja tinggal ketik:

shell > sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras vlc inkscape dia gnochm xchm

Hmm, semua jalan lancar.

Caranya, ketik:

shell > sudo cp /etc/apt/source.list /etc/apt/source.list.backup
shell > sudo gedit /etc/apt/source.list

Setelah tampil file source.list di gedit, silakan anda hapus semua teksnya (waduuhhh, gawat dong kalo ada salah). Tenang, kan tadi udah dibackup. Hehehe… Amaann

Ubah isinya dengan teks berikut:

deb http://kambing.ui.edu/ubuntu karmic main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://kambing.ui.edu/ubuntu karmic-updates main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://kambing.ui.edu/ubuntu karmic-security main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://kambing.ui.edu/ubuntu karmic-backports main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://kambing.ui.edu/ubuntu karmic-proposed main restricted universe multiverse

shell > sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-cache show <nama_paket>

Contohnya :

shell > sudo apt-cache search mario
apt-cache search mario
bloboats – a boat racing game

Recently, the biggest news came from RBI. The bank repo rate is unchanged at 4.75%. The RBI CRR is also unchanged. The bank has raised nominal SLR only 1% from 24% to 25%. According to the experts, the minimal hike will not impact on liquidity.

The GDP forecast for financial year 2010 was also unchanged at 6%. On the home loans also, there is no impact with the announcement of RBI Monetary policy. On this occasion, Governor Subbarao told the chief executives of commercial banks at the central bank’s headquarters,

“As always, the Reserve Bank will endeavor to ensure price stability and anchor inflation expectations. It bears emphasis that the Reserve Bank is mindful of its fundamental commitment to price stability. It will continue to monitor the price situation in its entirety and will take measures as warranted by the evolving macroeconomic conditions swiftly and effectively.”

Bank rate unchanged with 6%, Repurchase rate unchanged with 4.75%, Reserve repurchase rate unchanged with 3.25%, Cash reserve ratio unchanged with 5% and SLR hiked only 1% on this occasion by RBI.

In April, the repo rate and the reserve repo rate were cut by 50 basis points. RBI had cut 5% to 3.5%.

The raise of SLR to 1% will be effect from November 7th, 2009. Currently, CRR is 5%, Repo is 4.75% and 3.25% respectively which are remained unchanged by the RBI.

These minor changes affect the BSE, Sensex, Nifty and NSE. Minor losses were seen that time with the opening of stock exchange. However, it is being said by the experts that there will be no impact on liquidation by the minor changes.

The minimum hikes in statutory liquidity ratio has made mandatory for the banks also to invest more funds in specified securities. This investment should be against of deposits and some liquid cash.
