In my journeys working with my clients and with NorCal Poodle Rescue, I see way too many dogs that are fearful of men. The problem is not extensive with people who take in a new puppy but grows exponentially with rescue dogs. It is so hard for the new man to see these dogs cower from them. It’s emotionally stressful for everyone in the family pack.

It’s not easy to ask women to back off to allow the men to build a relationship with the dog but I know it helps the situation. After all if we have had experiences with something or someone that frightens us we have to build up our trust. Dogs are no different! They too need time to change how they relate to a situation that frightens them. Going slow and being patient is a great healer. Be gentle and soft with your newly rescued dog. Don’t use your big voice. Stop demanding and allow your dog to find her way to you. Lower your body by crouching rather than hovering over your dogs head. Give him a chance to spend time with you eating, playing and relaxing. As enough time goes by she will be much more open to you.

When I was a little girl my parents would tell me at the door of my grandmothers, “don’t forget to give her a kiss”. The more they said it – the more terrified I got. So when you have male visitors to your home I find it helpful to not ask the dog to connect with him. Your visitor can help by ignoring your dog and just going about their visit with you. In the beginning the less interaction – the better. The goal is to allow your dog to scent and adjust to men in her life without her going into a flight or fight mode.

Once you have bonded with your dog and gained his trust, you can start to move the process to the bigger world. Every new male will be a new situation, so having patience again is key. I have found being chipper and brisk can help a lot. Using happy talk and keeping the movement going helps. Lingering and thinking things will be different at this stage doesn’t seen to help. The key is to keep going and let your dog see – but not have time to react.

So while I sit here waiting for the big storm to hit I decided to do up a little collage of my chihuahua sticking out her tongue while she is sleeping. I think the reason she does this is a small under-bite which causes a little space between her top and bottom jaw, allowing her tongue to slip out when she relaxes.

Now if she was a human she might be embarrassed about this little “issue” but she doesn’t even notice. When I see it I have to run and grab a camera. Sorry to betray the trust you have built up with me, but I just cannot help myself when I see this because it is just too cute. I know you will forgive me Willow because everyone else will think its cute as well!!!!!!

while I am setting up this blog I may as well introduce you to my two other dogs, both of which were rescued. Along with the Chihuahua princess we also have a terrier and a shepherd mix.

First there is Cocoa, He was rescued when he was six months old. A person I worked with had gotten him at a pet store taken him home and then realized, oh I didn’t think my poorly planned purchase would be this energetic. So she promptly tried to kill him with Sudafed. she gave him three tablets to see what would happen but lamented at work “it only gave him more energy”. I stood there not quite sure what I was hearing, while she laughed at her own story, I thought Oh My God that poor dog. That was when I started my quest to rescue this dog from this evil lady. One month later and several other failed attempts at doing him in she told me she was going to euthenize him. I told her no I would take him and she promptly disagreed and said “no he is too much even for you”. I said “well save yourself $120.00 dollars and let me try him out”. He has been with me ever since (like she would ever get him back).

Harley was a young pup when he was tied in someones yard to live a long life of neglect. Neighbors started to complain about him to the SPCA. He was skinny and beaten for barking when finally the landlord decided enough was enough and took him to the SPCA themselves. Thats where we found him while we were volunteering. He was scared and shaking and had a look on his face that said, “please don’t hurt me”. He still cowers if you get loud over something, even if your just trying to compete with the budgies (who like to talk over everyone). He was mistreated, but lucky for him he was unchained early enough in his life that it wasn’t how he spent his life, watching the world go by as he sat on a 6 foot rope.

Willow is her name. Flyball is her game. Willow is a rescued Pembroke Welsh Corgi who has unlimited energy, incredible intelligence and the unprecedented “good luck” to be rescued by folks who recognized her potential to become a “Flyball Star”.

There’s more to the story. There always is…..

Purina Pro Plan Rally to Rescue® helps rescue organizations give rescued pets a chance to be great, with the care they need and the loving homes they deserve. Willow was involved in a national contest, Tales of Greatness Contest (still running) that involved over 500 dogs/cats and she is now one of the top 4 finalists. Really!

There’s more…

Willow needs your help to win this contest. To see her story as told through the eyes of her new owners and to vote for Willow, please, check out this link to Purina Pro Plan Rally to Rescue® Facebook page which features a wonderful video about Willow and how she was saved first by a rescue group and then found her new forever home. The major portion of the video is about her turn around in life and how she is now an amazing flyball height dog and someday agility dog too.

Most of the video is about flyball. It will knock your socks off to watch her play flyball, run through an Agility course and still show boundless love and affection for her owners.

LOOK FOR THE STORY ENTITLED “WILLOW’S STORY” — she is the cute corgi face. Willow’s Story

The winning dog/cat wins a year supply of food for the rescue organization they came from along with some other nice perks. It is a “vote” not a like that is needed.

Flyball Today sends a huge “Thank You” to Kim Kowalski of Blazin’ K9s for sending in the tip that led to this wonderful story!

As a board member of the I CARE Foundation, I take great pride in being able to have played a major role in helping a large number of children who were previously internationally abducted reunite with their targeted parent and family as well as helping an even larger number of parents protect their children from being internationally kidnapped.

It is not easy.

In reality, the deck is stacked against any parent trying to reunite with a child or prevent a child from disappearing overseas.

Helping children from being internationally abducted or reunited with their targeted parent and family has been a goal of mine ever since I was unexpectedly forced to race into the nightmarish storms of international parental child abduction that is the basis of my novel ‘Chasing The Cyclone’ critics all around the world have been very generous to speak of. In fact, my commitment was much more than a goal: it was a promise I made to the God I believe in that one day I would stand to help others who face the same unthinkable storms of abduction my child and I faced.

At that time that my journey into the world of abduction began, I had never even heard of the collective words ‘international parental child abduction’ or the ‘Hague Convention’.

I sure know of them now.

But words and desires alone do no make a difference. Action makes a difference. Commitment makes a difference. Standing unbowed in the face of deterrents makes a difference. And acting in goodness to help others who cannot help themselves makes a difference.

Paying close attention to action, commitment, determination, and in goodness, more than a few miracles on behalf of children have been created. Many children have been rescued. Many more children will escape the chains of international kidnapping. And many, many more children will be protected and never be taken.

These words of appreciation and insight shared by other parents who I and the self-funded not-for-profit I CARE Foundation I am the Founding Director of mean a great deal to me. They serve as a reminder of what can do and what must be done to protect children (Click here to review sworn testimonial letters about how Peter Thomas Senese has helped children):

All appeared hopeless. Nigeria is not a member of nay foreign treaty, there was very little the U.S. government could do to help me in Nigeria. Very few children have ever been returned to America from Africa. I eventually contacted Peter Thomas Senese, as he is well-respected in the area of IPCA, who told me, “You need to be patient, but we will get your son home.” His words were simply not words. On June 11th, 2012 at approximately 10:15 p.m. while standing inside the Denver International Airport, I held my son in my arms! My son was back home, in America, just like Mr. Senese said he would be. Peter Thomas Senese has given so much to my family. God Bless you Peter for all you have done for me and my family.”

From bringing on an overseeing the investigations to attorneys needed to help me, to staying in consistent contact with me every step of the way during a very complex process, Peter’s incredible actions bespeak of his unquestionable kindness, caring, compassion, and what is right about this world. He never asked me for anything, but gave and gave and gave . . . And at 4:35 a.m. on a Friday morning standing next to me at the airport as my son was taken off a flight and [held] into my loving arms, was Peter Thomas Senese. As far as Peter Thomas Senese is concerned, he is an incredible man. He is direct, honest, loyal, compassionate, and made an enormous difference in my and my family’s life.
Without him, not only would I not have reunited with my abducted son . . . I prayed to God for help and a miracle. God answered. I am forever thankful to my friend Peter Thomas Senese and all he has done for me and my family.”

protecting my daughters from being parentally abducted to Saudi Arabia, where women like myself have no rights. If my children were abducted there, I would never see them again. Today, I sleep a little better due to the incredible efforts of Peter Thomas Senese. Knowing Mr. Senese has helped ensure my children’s safety and has helped protect us from Chasing The Cyclone of international child abduction. Along the way, he has never asked for anything.”

acts selflessly on behalf of children all across the globe, he is honest, sincere, unbowed, and willing to stand up against those that act against others. My abducted child is coming home, finally after all these years, in no
small way because of the great assistance I received from Peter Thomas Senese.”

TP, a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy (reserve) and a mother said, “Mr. Senese
Mr. Senese’s work and network continue to protect my daughter and other targeted children.”

Of course, when you are dealing with defending against international parental child abduction, the kidnapper or those working with the abductor are not going to be very happy to know that abduction prevention advocates such as myself and the I CARE Foundation team who possess a strong track record of assisting children are acting to stop their illicit and abusive act. So, part of the turf in working tirelessly to protect children from being abducted or rescuing kidnapped children is that child abusing abductors will attempt to discredit me and the I CARE Foundation team. There efforts will have no bearing on our self-funded, highly dedicated foundation: we will continue to act to stop child abduction and whenever possible, legally assist a parent in their heroic effort to reunite with their stolen child or children

The I CARE Foundation

A great deal of the goals I have set out to achieve have been connected to the I CARE Foundation.

For those of you who are not aware of the I CARE Foundation, we are a self-funded, not-for-profit organization that has gradually become a visible stakeholder in the world of international parental child abduction prevention and reunification with a large and growing list of impressive accomplishments.

The accomplishments of the I CARE Foundation include assisting in numerous LEGAL international child abduction recoveries and reunification, heavily participated in exponentially more successful acts to prevent abduction from occurring, our ongoing groundbreaking research in the area of international child abduction and trafficking has provided new, accurate, and insightful information as to the severity of the global epidemic society as a whole has before it, our comprehensive and expansive reporting of our research findings has led other stakeholders to protect numerous children from abduction while allowing us to significantly advance our legislative initiatives, some of which have either already become law or agency policy, while legislative initiatives are moving forward in a manner we could hope for. Additionally, we continue to build a national network of pro bono lawyers who participate in the U.S. Department of State’s ‘Hague Convention Attorney Network’, while nearing completion for the first-ever international child abduction case law data base. In addition, I am very pleased to know that the foundation’s resources come from within: we are self-funded and intend to remain this way.

One last thing: as some of you may know, I have donated 100% of all of my publishing earnings to the I CARE Foundation in order to help try to recover children who have been abducted. So, if you’re interested in reading any of my novels such as Chasing The Cyclone, The Den of the Assassin, Cloning Christ, or War on Wall Street, know that your purchase will be directed to making a difference for children.

Hi! Hi! Hi! I love you already - even though I just met you! My name is Riley
(I'm a girl) and my mommy thinks I'm a long-haired chihuahua, but she really
doesn't know because she rescued me.

I don't remember much about my life before because compared to my life now, that part of my past seems like a
bad dream. One of the worst things I remember about my life before I met my
family, is the time I was wandering around outside some apartments. I was so
scared.

A lady picked me up and brought me into the vet that was across the
street from the apartments. She told the doctor at the vet that she was just
going to put me back where she found me. The doctor was really nice and said she
would take me. So for a little while I stayed around at the vet.

The doctor thought for sure my owner would claim me, but no one did. So I was put up for
adoption there, and soon after, I was adopted from the vet by a college student.
I lived with her for a few months until she realized that she couldn't take care
of me because school and her job were already too much for her to handle.
Because she loved me, she tried to find me a good home. My ad for a new home was
posted on eBay classifieds.

My mommy was looking for a puppy, and when she saw me, she thought I could be the one for her.
She wasn't sure it would work out at first, so I tried living in her house for a few days before
the final decision was made. I wasn't potty trained yet, so my mommy didn't think it would
work out.

My mommy decided to keep me anyway! I was so happy! So was my mommy. After
a couple of months living with my new family, I got worried that she might not
want me, because I had changed homes so much recently. My mommy reassured me and
said "This is your forever home." I've been with my family ever since.

Here are just a few things about me: I don't bark much. I kiss people! I love
everyone! I enjoy napping, playing, and going on walks. I hate baths and I am afraid of vacuum
cleaners.

Mommy thinks I have an endless supply of energy. I love my family and
my home! I wish every dog was this lucky.

Dogs like Riley search for loving forever homes every day. Make a dog's heart happy- rescue a dog today!

Capping off the month of June for PPBD was the Bow & Wow Benefit Dinner for C.A.R.A. (Compassion and Responsibility for Animals) Welfare Philippines held at The Rockwell Tent in Makati.

Everyone who graced the event, whether human or canine, celebrities and non-celebrities alike, came dressed in their best and dressed to impress! Hosted by socialite philanthropist Tessa Prieto-Valdez, the dinner featured a delectable buffet by Margarita Fores’ Cibo / Cibo di M, organic wines by Healthy Options and Wine Story, and a drool-worthy doggie buffet spread for furry guests by Bow & Wow plus dog-friendly desserts by Swell Sweets. My husband (who was my date-slash-assistant for the night, haha!) and I enjoyed ourselves immensely, especially coz this was our first time to literally “wine & dine” with hundreds of other pet-parents and their dogs.

What I personally loved most about that night though, aside from meeting so many wonderful dogs, was being able to meet, listen to, and converse a bit with the heart and soul of C.A.R.A., Ms. Nancy Cu-Unjieng.

As she spoke that night on stage about the state of animal welfare in our country and the work C.A.R.A. has been doing for the past 7 years, every now and then my eyes would well up with tears. Clearly it was a touching speech, but made more so by the person who delivered it. You cannot fake that sort of passion and compassion; I could tell hers was genuine through and through. I’m certain everyone in the crowd felt it too.

C.A.R.A. currently cares for hundreds of rescued dogs and cats that are fostered by volunteers in their own homes until the time they get adopted. I met one of their rescues that night — a puppy mill dog named Cooper, in the photo below with his awesome foster mom and animal advocate Li-an Ascalon. Despite being rejected and abandoned, Cooper that night seemed like the gentlest and sweetest little pup ever!!! If we didn’t already have 2 pets of our own and 4 other fosters at home, my husband and I would’ve probably adopted him right there and then!

A whopping P550,000 was raised for C.A.R.A. that night – P450,000 from ticket sales plus a pledge of an additional P100,000 from Healthy Options Group of Companies top executives, Romy Sia and Christian Tan. (So cool!!!) The funds will be used for C.A.R.A.’s recent undertaking called “Save the Laguna Pitbulls”, a rehabilitation project for more than 200 pit bulls rescued from a cruel dog-fighting syndicate in Laguna run by Korean nationals. (So NOT cool!!!)

These brothers are our newest rescue babies. They were rescued from a very sad situation by a wonderful person, named Hilary. She did all of the hard work for us, by saving them, nursing them back to health, teaching them that humans are not all bad, and getting them used to The Good Life. Sorry everyone, I know they are beautiful, but they are going to stay here with us. We will be sure to update you all on their progress, though!

They’re now 11-weeks old, socialized, weaned, healthy and ready for their “forever home”. Here are three of them…

Carmelo is very intelligent, curious and observant. He is sooo gentle and affectionate too. A real sweetheart!

Who said black cats were bad luck? Nah! Black is beautiful! Although a bit cautious around people, Amare is a darling. She can be quite funny too. And yes, she’s female.

Meet litter mates Jeremy, Carmelo, Landry, Shumpert, Chandler and Amare. They are about 4-weeks old

Meet litter mates Jeremy, Carmelo, Landry, Shumpert, Chandler and Amare. They are about 4-weeks old today.

In a couple of weeks, after they’ve been properly socialized and weaned (around 10-12 weeks old), they’ll be up for adoption. Because kittens don’t do well alone, they’ll need to be adopted in pairs. But I’m sure they won’t mind being adopted all together as a whole team! Haha! Either way, they’ll need a family to love them and keep them safe, happy and healthy.

Remember, however, that adopting a pet is a lifelong commitment. So if you have it your heart to adopt these little ones, you’ll need to consider all the factors involved.

Begin by asking yourself the following questions:

Am I prepared to love my pet for life? Can I afford a pet — food, vaccinations, vet bills, spaying or neutering, grooming, housing? Will I have time to care for a pet — to train them, groom them and let them get enough exercise? Do I have enough space for a pet in my home? Are pets allowed in the place I live? In other words… will a pet fit into my lifestyle? And if not, am I willing to change my lifestyle for a pet?

New Hampshire Fish and Game Press release: (http://www.wildnh.com)

TEEN CLIMBERS STRANDED ON CANNON CLIFFS; SOMERSWORTH MAN RESCUED ON MOUNT MAJOR
CONCORD, N.H. — Two wilderness rescues last night emphasize the need for hikers and climbers to factor shorter days/diminishing daylight into their plans for outdoor recreation in the Granite State, New Hampshire Fish and Game officials said today.
In Franconia, a 10-member team from the Conway-based Mountain Rescue Service responded to a 911 call for help from three college students who had become stranded partway up Cannon Cliffs as darkness fell last night (Sunday, October 23, 2011). The rock climbers were Jonathan Merritt, age 18, of Lander, Wyoming; Jason Reitman, age 18, of Potomac, Maryland; and Alexander MacMillan, age 19, of Boston, Massachusetts, all freshmen at Wesleyan University.
The young men were equipped with climbing gear and lights, but were not prepared to deal with overnight mountain temperatures dipping into the 20′s (degrees F). They had set out early — at 5:30 a.m. — for their climb up the Moby Grape route up Cannon Cliffs, but as the day progressed, they became overextended on terrain that required more than their level of expertise. By 8:00 p.m. they had not reached the top of the cliff and used a cell phone to call for help.
A rescue commenced, coordinated by the N.H. Fish and Game Department. Franconia Notch State Park officials opened the Cannon Mountain tramway and ferried Mountain Rescue Service crew and Fish and Game officers up the mountain at 10:40 p.m. From the top, the search team located the climbers using GPS coordinates from the 911 call and light signals from the stranded men. Mountain Rescue Service volunteers hiked from the summit down to a point where they could lower three rescuers by rope to the climbers’ location, where they secured the young men with ropes, and all were lifted to safety about 1:40 a.m. The teens were cold and tired, but not injured. They were then able to hike down the mountain, along with the rescue team, arriving at the parking lot at 2:45 a.m.
"We are seeing multiple rescues every weekend," said N.H. Fish and Game Conservation Officer James Kneeland. "Among other safety precautions, hikers and climbers need to take into account that the days are getting shorter when they plan their fall outings."
In another incident on Sunday evening (October 24, 2011), 46-year-old hiker Brian Pflanz of Somersworth, N.H., was rescued on Mount Major in Alton. Pflanz became disoriented and lost the trail near the summit, then slipped and fell on a mossy area. He was not injured, but realized he was off the trail and it was getting dark, so he called for help about 6:30 p.m. N.H. Fish and Game Conservation Officers and Alton Fire Department personnel responded, finding him using GPS coordinates via his cell phone, and hiked him back down the mountain trail, arriving at the trailhead about 8:20 p.m.
For more information on safe hiking, visit http://www.hikesafe.com.
