The Storyboards shown above are the versions in which I will base my filming upon. They also show what I am planning to create in order for an effective 2 minute introduction. I will try to keep within these guidelines for my final project but may add/take away scenes depending on what works best. I hope to have storyboarded 2 minutes of footage, I have numbered the shot/scenes in the corners of each box to indicate the order. I have planned out my film on the basis of my previous target audience research in which most people preferred action/suspense and shooting. All of these is what will be featured in my film as the suspense will come from the tense non-diagetic music.

 I  chose to use this pathway that follows under the bridge because it runs next to the river which could be connoted as running for the border for the two actors Guy and Mitchell.

 I thought this bridge worked well as it looked like my main Actor (Will) had the higher ground over the other two. connoting that he has more power and his costume (neckerchief) does remind the audience of an outlaw as it covers his face.

Media Mock Ups Explanation

For preparation for my final magazine, I produced a set of mock ups as practise for my real magazine to see how my magazine would turn out and to see where I could develop areas for practise. throughout this process I was able to experiment with pictures, layout designs and fonts to see which I thought fitted my genre best and to see what would look best for my magazine. this enabled me to get a rough idea of how I would place things when it came to creating my actual magazine.

Front cover

For my front cover I chose to use a simple plain black background as this emphasised my features and related to the genre of my magazine, I thought it was quite unusual to have a black background but I realised it might attract more people this way because it’s different. For my main image I used a male because when looking at other music magazine similar to mine they all used males so conventionally I did the same as my magazine is aimed at a higher percentage of boys anyway. For my image I have gone against Laura Mulvey’s Male gaze theory(1975) which states that women are looked at by males and can be used for male attraction, at the time I thought it was relevant to use a male instead of a female. I chose to use bright colours such as yellow, red and blue as I saw these stood out from the background, and for my main image I chose to put this in black and white as I thought this stood out which was what I was trying to achieve.

I think my contents page is the most successful of all pages as I like the colour scheme and the layout. I developed this layout idea from looking at Mixmag music magazine which I got the idea form but changed it to suit my audience better, I out the text in boxes as I wanted it to stand out to my audience and I chose to use black and white as they stand out from each other and catch your eye. I also chose to put the text on the left and the images on the right as people read from left to right so I thought this would be easy on the eye. The images I used for this page relate to my genre of dance and that’s why I chose to use them, by using David Guetta as the main image on this page I thought this would attract my target audience as he is very well known so I used him on purpose. I also used Rita Ora as one of my images because I knew this would attract females and males which was what I was trying to achieve, also I realised I had used many images of males so therefore I wanted to balance it out more.

Double page spread

For my double page spread I again used images of Guetta to attract my audience, I used the colours red and yellow for my double page spread as I thought these related to my genre and my target audience could relate these colours to festivals and clubs. I conventionally used a drop cap for my articles to indicate where it starts and to make it stand out to my audience, for my body copy I used a simple font as I wanted it to be easy for my audience to read even if it is plain. I included fact boxes within my double page spread to make it seem more interesting and to catch my audience’s attention and this is why I used the colour red as I thought it stood out against the white.

We posted all our videos onto our Facebook page where many people began to watch our videos, we gained many views on our videos because we distributed our blog onto the social networking site. The most watched video was our Preliminary Task which had 49 views  which is amazing  because on our facebook page we only have 41 people  who have liked our page. This  meant that other people were posting our videos on their own facebook pages to make the videos go viral. This  attracted more teenagers to watch our video. Also for the Final cut for the main task it was our second highest viewing, of 22 people. This shows that we have  been successful in reaching out to our target audience.

Due to the extra filming sessions we are planning to complete later this evening we have planned shots to take to save time.

MONDAY 25TH MARCH:

13.10pm –   Start filming the ”Typing scene’ where we would need a student on the computer typing as a filler/ for voiceover to go onto.

13.40pm – Both Monica and Falguni edit this onto our final piece.

13:50pm – Break for both editors to do other work (Photography/Textiles)

14:50pm – Evaluation QUESTION 4 completed.

Hope this helps structure our time this week so we can use it as  valuable/crucial time…We all have exams coming up so we might as well wrap this up so we could revise with ease over half-term.

Mists of History is an exploration of colonialism, belongingness and brotherhood through an accessible storyline via a 12-part Radio-Drama series. Aimed at an older audience of both ABC1 (Elements and references to World War II would appeal) and particularly C2DE 25-40 year olds of a male gender however the feminist aspects revolving Pandora will appeal also to some females. The show will air past watershed due to the realistic albeit violent representation of the army.

Mists of History revolves around two sets of characters: four missing soldiers (Sgt Lad, Cpl Barrett, L/Cpl Howard and L/Cpl Jones) in 2013 Afghanistan and the mysterious daughter of Winston Churchill, Pandora, in 1940 Britain. When the four soldiers and Pandora cross each others paths on the war-torn deserts of Zrande, Afghanistan, a series of bizarre and peculiar events happen and are all explained through Pandora’s and Sgt Lad’s flashbacks to both 1940 and 2012 Bethnal Green. However many questions are raised. How does one suddenly end up in 2013? How does one time travel? And what exactly is a time demon?

The drama is a mix between War and Science Fiction to break the conventions of typical war storylines such as The Hurt Locker. The idea of time travel is used to explore different themes such as colonialism and belongingness and also adds an element of mystery, which becomes appealing.

The drama’s narrative won’t be particularly linear and will, at times, become fragmented, particularly due to interweaving of flashbacks between Pandora and Lad.

The following is an extract from the first episode, which features the time shifting.

PANDORA: GOD NO, IT’S A TIME DEMON…

Question:In what ways does you media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Our documentary uses many conventions that are appropriate for our tasks. Firstly, for our documentary we used many conventional features such as establishing shots that help give our documentary a much more realistic feel to it, many other documentaries such as Panorama frequently do this as the main narrative of both documentaries have a heavy focus on ‘exposing’ society.

The use of  the ‘Voice of God’ and ‘Reason’ was also one way in which we have used conventions. However, we decided to develop the ‘voice of God’ by making it a Male’s voice – This breaks the convention of documentaries as our topic is a hugely sensitive area – mostly better related to BBC three’s narrative voice Cherry Healey who narrates most of the documentaries on BBC 3. However – We are broadcasting on BBC2 after the watershed so we decided to make it a male’s voice as it developed a sense of realism into our documentary.

We also used ‘real footages’ in the shape of Rihanna, Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian who are known to be over sexualized. This is a real media convention used in many expository documentaries

Question: How did you use media technologies in the construction and the research planning and evaluation stages?

Using the iMac computers were a big part of our research and planning and evaluation stages. In order to research we looked at different types of documentaries, especially expository documentaries and display them on a power point presentation. This has helped us look at the codes and conventions used in the documentary and use similar types of conventions in our documentary. For example, we used one of the episodes from Panorama, whichhelped us decide what genre we wanted to make our documentary. We use IMacsoftware’s such as Photoshop and IMovie to create both our main product and ancillary tasks.

Our mobile phones were a quick and easy technological device for us to access information and to reach our target audiences. We all have Facebook and Twitter apps on our mobile phones. The increased use and proliferation of technologies have enabled us to fulfill this task. Most notably we used our SMARTPHONE mobile phones to track out places that we were going .

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

I loved both the ancillary and main documentary as they both complemented each other perfectly. The great thing that we did as a group was to first distinguish our target audience which inevitably helped us understand our marketing audience through our ancillary tasks. The combination of our magazine, Radio and Documentary was enhanced by the clear synergy that we used, the documentary would air intended for Parents as our primary target audience. We used technology through sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to gain feedback.

Our style is not too garish and follows a traditional and conservative format in line with our much older target audience. Our Double page spread has the very simple house colour grey. Using Photoshop for about a week we tried many different colours and put up a poll on our Facebook and twitter page to let our target audience pick their choice of colour. This very simple house style was very useful for our us as our target audiences would associate our ‘Brand’ with this particular colour.

A Brand identity was created by between our ancillary tasks and documentary through various ways. Firstly, our double page spread would feature on a magazine suited towards our target audience such as Radio Times, usually associated with much a much more mature readership. Our documentary is also a BBC documentary, the BBC also run the magazine ‘Radio Times’ thus helping create a brand identity. We used research from the Internet to try and understand the relationship between the BBC and Radio Times that proved useful, providing our main task a stepping stone to be publicised nationwide. We also used past online archives to try and spot the conventional features of a ‘Radio Times’ magazine.

Our Radio uses many conventional features that would help sell our documentary, so does our Double Page spread. Firstly the design is specifically tailored to our primary target audiences as I’ve already mentioned. Our Genre being an expository documentary we didn’t want to take away the seriousness  from the actual product so decided to focus more on the issue and the actual content. The design would sell to our target audience as they would appreciate the seriousness of our documentary by looking at the double page spread. The design is pretty basic and very mature and comprised of us using an SLR camera to take the main pictures. The Picture of Benedict Garrett is a still from our documentary and involved our editors print screening and photoshopping the picture, a lengthy procedure. Our Radio advert would air on a radio station such as LBC or on a drive time Schedule on CapitalFM to reach our target audience. I love our radio advert as it grabs the attention and has a narrative of its own, enabling to sell our documentary to our target audience.

I decided for costumes I needed; Cowboy hats, waistcoats, toy guns, gun holsters, some form of a hat etc.

 This is my Dads hat, to acutally use it in my film I asked (nicely) him if I could borrow it for the process of filming. He said I could and It was used on my main Actor, Will.  I beleive that it resembles the calssic stereotype of a western character.

 This item (and many others) came from the Guilsborough School Drama studio. To gain access to this item I needed to ask Mrs. Woodbridge (Head of drama) if i could borrow it for the dates I planned to use it on my shooting schedule. This item of clothing was also used by Will.

 This object was also borrowed from the Guilsborough School Drama studio. My main character Will used it. A problem occured with this item. Mrs. Woodbridge (Head of Drama) mentioned that it is illegal to carry a gun even if it is a toy in school so I asked her if I could use it, she asked the Head Teacher of the school (Mrs. Staley) to use it after school, she replied with a yes.

 This item was also borrowed from the Guilsborough School Drama studio. It was used with my Actor, Mitchell. I used the grey coat and this grey flatcap on Mitchell because I wanted him to look like a townsmen/worker rather than all characters look similair.

    Will and Harry dressed up in their costumes. The reason why Will is my main Actor is because I had trouble with Tom who dropped out just before the start of filming. I then asked Will to star as the main character and He said yes.

 The two pictures shown are images of the two new Actors I desparetly needed after Ash and Tom dropped out just before we went ahead with filming. Guy (above) acted as the new Sherriff rather than ash. Mitchell (below) acted as a townsmen/worker.

All items of clothing worn by the Actors that haven’t been mentioned previously are items that are actually owned by the person.

Here is my paperwork for my main task which is to create my own title sequence. Once I had somewhere to shoot, I went straight to work on developing a plan and finalising it ready for filming. The pre-production paperwork really helped me to plan my ideas and understand what directors have to consider before they start filming such as risks and problems the location has. When I finished doing this, filming was easier for me and my talent felt more comfortable under clear and concise instructions from me.
