But how can colour act as a shield and act as all-time armour against collisions? When the weather is dull, greys and creams will blend into the surroundings, while greens and browns seamlessly fuse into rural environs. Should insurance companies have different norms for different colours? Is it not just the colour but also the type of car that you drive which speaks volumes? Why then is a Minivan supposed to appeal those who are the nurturing sort and the Hummer bring out the warrior in some? If we are what we drive then what can you make of the Toyota except that it’s a combination of saving the environment and money? Right? Or are we Leftist? Yes, quirky or not, a car model can also say a lot about personality; whether you fall in the Flintstone category or the Volvo-driven Democrat or…

Then there are owners who have endearing names for their vehicles on the lines of Miss Blue, Miss Green or Blue Baby or even Daffodil for a yellow number. In this case, how does an owner of a purple-coloured car address his beauty; since the colour emits strong signs of individuality? In fact, the colour determines the mindset in the same way that sociologists find a link between behavior of people and their pets! As green means being concerned with global warming and a sports car reflecting the adventurous streak, it is not an unsolvable riddle, but an interesting puzzle – finding out if your would-be spouse is joyful at heart (think yellow!) or hails from an aggressive ilk (drives a truck or a van!) Now time to get to the window to begin the window researching! 

I hide myself, and I hunt. Instead of staying on the radar, I submerse myself as a spectator into the great ocean of the internet; instead of contributing things to the world, I become a ravenous consumer of information and opinions.  I spend hours reading about a specific topic, with hopes of finding an answer to my woe of the moment.

When I realise what I am doing, I feel an incredible urge to stop; to break out of my hiding place and remind the world that I exist – and that I have my eye on it.

Before I was accepted to the University of Florida, I went to Daytona State College where I was a staff writer for the student publication In Motion. I was on a scholarship program with the school, attending full-time and trying to finish my Associate of the Arts degree.

I wrote this article in the fall semester of 2012, in my last semester at the college before I transferred to UF.  That semester I was enrolled in Intro to Journalism as an elective and Oceanography as my last science credit for my required core credits.

The professor of my Oceanography class, Dr. Debra Woodall, made an announcement at the end of the semester that the course we were currently taking would have a special additional lab starting in the fall of 2013 to anyone who is a marine science major.

Meanwhile, the professor of Intro to Journalism, Elena Jarvis, assigned to our class an outside story due in a couple of days, which I had no clue what I was going to do it on. So after hearing Dr. Woodall’s announcement, I was excited to talk to her and get more information on the making of the added lab.

However, no story assignment is ever complete without complications.

Coincidentally, Dr. Woodall made this announcement a week before DSC was to take its Thanksgiving break, and since our lectures were only once a week, the only time I could ask her questions was during her office hours after class the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Within this time crunch, there were three variables that stressed me out: the story was due for my journalism class that Wednesday; I was leaving to spend Thanksgiving with my family in Birmingham, Al. immediately after class; and Dr. Woodall scheduled our ROV (remotely operated vehicles) class lab that day at DSC’s pool.

I’ll admit, I was pretty stressed out, but I knew I could get the story. So when the ROV lab date came I was prepared.

My lab partner, Cherise, and I arrived a little early, so Dr. Woodall allowed us to start as soon as we put our backpacks down. We had to design, build and successfully operate our ROV, and if we could catch “crabs” on the bottom of the pool, we would get an A.

It took us 15 minutes.

I had a design ready, so all we needed to do was build the vessel, which we had to assemble out of PVC piping, plastic forks and duct tape. After we built the frame we attached the propeller ballasts and launched  the vehicle into the water.

After learning how to operate the ballasts underwater, using the different switches on the control board to steer the ROV up, down, left and right, we made way for our decent the the bottom of the pool to catch our crabs. It took us another 10 minutes of bumping the pool bottom before one of the pipe-cleaner and PVC-pipe crabs got  caught around one of the propellers. With some difficulty Cherise and I were able to coax the ROV up to the surface, and we both got an A.

We quickly cleaned up and I asked Dr. Woodall if I could interview her, and she said yes, giving me a great story with really good quotes. I was able to write the story on the nine hour car ride to Alabama, submitting it via email at a rest area that has wireless internet along the way.

Additionally, I received an A on my article and just a couple months ago it was published in the February 2013 edition of In Motion. I laughed when someone from back home emailed me that my article was in the newspaper there, but it reminded me that feature stories have a long life span and can even be published months after they are written.
