The last generation of gaming had plenty of amazing games. The PlayStation 2, Xbox GameCube and Drea

The last generation of gaming had plenty of amazing games. The PlayStation 2, Xbox GameCube and Dreamcast all had their fair share of great games that will be fondly remembered. However not all of these amazing games were as influential as others. There a few select games that have influenced the current generation and the games within it. All of the games in this article have influenced the modern gaming industry in one way or another.

The first game I want to discuss is Shenmue. This was released in Japan at the very end of 1999 for the Dreamcast. The game was incredibly ahead of its time and boasted open worlds, real time day and night cycles along with very high production values. This game is often considered to be amazing but due to the poor sales of the Dreamcast most gamers haven’t even played it. Arguably this is the game that created the sandbox titles that we see so much of nowadays. I think, however, that it was too early. If it had came out at a later date when more people had moved up a generation (Be it PS2, Dreamcast etc) it would have had a greater influence.

It loses most of the influence it could have had due to another game though. That game would be Grand Theft Auto III. GTA3 allowed players to do things that they had never been able to do in previous video games. Rather than complete one level, then move onto the next they were free to choose what to do. This was done in the previous GTA games but due to the limited hardware of consoles back there it didn’t have the same effect. The world lacked atmosphere in the original GTAs and there was no real reason to explore the city. The jump up the Grand Theft Auto III was incredible. The world was no longer a boring, empty city but it was now filled with life, in complete 3D graphics and there was a real reason to explore and adventure. This was the start of the sandbox genre that many games today have followed and tried to make their own. None of them have managed to make a big enough jump to amaze gamers like GTA3 did though.

Now, back to Shenmue. Shenmue lacked appeal to the non-Japanese market. The majority of western gamers prefer the Americanised product with guns, blood and bad language so they completely ignored Shenmue but obsessed over Grand Theft Auto III. Shenmue rarely gets the credit it deserves because Grand Theft Auto III overshadowed in terms of sales and popularity. Even though Shenmue provided a believable, realistic world it also tried create a cinematic experience that gamers had never before witnessed which could have put a lot of people off. When GTA3 came out the majority of the focus was aimed at the free world and the story was nowhere as cinematic as Shenmue. This arguably let GTA3 use the world more effectively.

The sandbox world has been beaten these days though. Games like Yakuza, Far Cry 2, Oblivion and of course Grand Theft Auto IV have came leaps and bounds ahead the groundwork GTA3 left behind. None of them, however, have revolutionised it the way GTA3 did.

GTA3 was influential because of the sandbox world but there are some other games that need mentioned. Halo: Combat Evolved being one of these. The PC was always the home for First Person Shooters and consoles generally lacked them. Games like Doom, Quake and Duke Nukem were all born and raised on the PC. I’m not saying there were no console shooters before Halo and I’m not saying there were no good ones either but it was mainly PC.

Halo was the definitive console shooter. The PS2 and Dreamcast lacked FPS’ that really made a big jump so when Halo appeared as a launch title for the Xbox people were blown away. The fact that Halo was a launch title makes it even more influential than it would have been normally. Most launch titles tend be poor in comparison to later games but Halo stood strong as one of the best games on the system and the last generation as a whole. This was the FPS that started to appeal to console owners. Whether it’s because of the icon that is Master Chief, the fact it was bundled with the Xbox and everyone got to play it or maybe the marketing really worked, there is no denying the influence Halo had on the console shooters.

I need to give a mention to Goldeneye 007 though which is often considered to be one of the best shooters ever made. Goldeneye was released on the Nintendo 64 and was a good few years before Halo. Rare done an exceptional job with Goldeneye and proved that console shooters can be amazing before Halo was even announced. It didn’t have the same impact or influence that Halo did though. It did sell well and it was very well received but Halo was considered revolutionary and it was while Goldeneye didn’t set the world on fire the same way. I think the main drawback was that the controls weren’t as refined as Halo’s were which kept the PC the FPS platform of choice. Of course, Goldeneye wasn’t part of the last generation so it shouldn’t really be counted in this article.

This generation has been filled with both first person shooters and third person shooters. Halo led the way for the FPS’ while it was Resident Evil 4 that influenced the way of the third person shooter. Before RE4, third person shooters were zoomed far back and the camera was quite far back from your character. When Resident Evil 4 arrived though, it also brought the over the shoulder camera with it. No longer were third person shooters far back, but instead you viewed from the characters shoulder which allowed a whole new perspective and a much more enjoyable way of shooting. Every third person shooter these days uses this new camera.

Gears of War had a great influence from RE4 in particular. Rather than a horror template, Gears of War went for the full action template with hordes of enemies and lots of set pieces which really utilized the over the shoulder camera. It is also implemented a cover system which was extremely influential itself has influenced this generation quite a bit already but that’s for a different article.

Resident Evil 4 was extremely well received by critics and developers alike. It was the first time a camera like this had been used and it really did change how games played. It refined the gameplay of them and made third person shooters a lot more enjoyable than they were before.

There are other games that have had a smaller influence from the last generation too. Guitar Hero set the bar for music video games as well as creating a peripheral that really changes how the game played. The prototype for Resident Evil 4, Devil May Cry, also had a small influence on action-adventure games by creating a very enjoyable experience with a mixture of exploration, story development, waves of enemies and multiple bosses. God of War also had a little to do with this.

However, some games didn’t get the influence they deserved. Both Shadow of the Colossus and Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath come to mind. Both of these were well received, Shadow of the Colossus in particular. If these two games had managed to influence this generation on a greater scale it would have been very different. Shadow of the Colossus was an amazing experience throughout and placed players into an amazing world where many magnificent creatures inhabited. Through the sense of mystery and the gameplay that was made up of pretty much boss fights only, it turned out to be incredible. There was so much that Shadow of the Colossus done really well besides the core gameplay, the connection to Agro, the sense of scale, the story and nearly everything about it was pulled off fantastically. Stranger’s Wrath tried to innovate the FPS genre through the use of the crossbow which, combined with the highly detailed quirky world, made it a completely different FPS from the rest. The different mixtures of gameplay which were all evenly balanced helped this be a great game. If games like these had got the larger influence they had this generation would have been completely different. Rather than contain a lack of ideas, games would have took more risks and stepped away from the safe path of generic ideas and gameplay (Not every game this gen is like this though).

If the main games I mentioned earlier didn’t come about, would this generation have been the same? To be honest they wouldn’t have but I think another game would have taken their place after a while. Eventually an FPS would have come to console, like what Halo done and brought on many waves of them. If GTA3 wasn’t released then Shenmue would have taken its place. If neither had been released his would have came along differently. If Resident Evil 4 hadn’t created the over the shoulder camera then I don’t know what would have happened. I think eventually something would have come around to change third person shooters but I doubt it would have been the same. I doubt the same camera would have been used but I can’t think how it would have changed.

The last generation was a huge influence on this generation but that goes without saying. The generation before the last generation influenced it and it will keep on going back that way. There were a few select games that had a huge influence on this gen and formed a lot of the games we see today. Some games were overlooked and if they weren’t, this generation could have been completely different.

Endlich ! nach :

Resident Evil 1,2,3 (PSX)

Code Veronica (Dreamcast)

Resident Evil 4 (Gamecube)

Resident Evil Survivor (Wii)

Vielleicht „Zombie-strike“

On September 18th. All of the people who want to play Resident Evil 5 on PC will be able to later in the year. The PC version comes with some new content which includes new costumes, a better Mercenaries mode, three times the amount of enemies on screen and support for 3D vision technology. The 3D technology is made by Nvidia and works through the use of 3D glasses. Apparantely the PC version will let people experience ”infected Majini coming at players from every angle, dust flying in and out of screen and the scariest bosses to date are taken up a notch,”

It’s still not coming to the Wii though.

Yep, that’s right, there’s going to be another Resident Evil film. This one is called Resident Evil: Afterlife and currently has a release date of Spetember 17th 2010. Milla Jovovich will probably be returning but it hasn’t been confirmed and there is also no word about Paul Anderson returning as director. The other three Resident Evil films haven’t been very good so I’m not expecting much from this one but I would like to see a good Resi film. I haven’t saw Resident Evil: Degeneration yet but it could be the good Resi film I looking for.

Most people think that Resident Evil 4 reinvented the series for the better so maybe the fourth film will do the same.

This guide is to help people find all the BSAA emblems in Resident Evil 5.

Note: I recommended always taking a rifle with you to get all the emblems. It can make it a lot easier to find and hit the emblems.

Note: If you are just playing through the levels for the emblems and want to quit the level after getting them all it will be all right. You won’t loose the emblem though I have only tried quiting and saving my new equipment so be cautious if you want to try the other option.

Chapter 1-1:

None

Chapter 1-2: Public Assembly

Emblem 1: Go inside the building which has the balcony. Go up the stairs and onto the balcony. Look towards your right and you will see a building across from you which has the emblem on it.

Emblem 2: Go into the building with the people who die when you walk round the corner and has black goo on the stairs. When you climb up ladder follow the path and turn around to face to door. Then look up and the emblem will be on the water cooler.

Emblem 3: When you are close to the end of the level and near the suitcase of Handgun ammo turn around and look into the fence. There should be a hole to shoot through and get the emblem.

Chapter 2-1: Storage Facility

Emblem 4: When you start look up on the far away wall and the emblem should be on the right hand side.

Emblem 5: Just before you enter the sewers after crossing the bridge turn around to face the bridge. The emblem is on the middle bridge support.

Emblem 6: When you arrive at the docks you should walk past a green hut. The emblem is under the hut’s roof and can be tricky to see so look carefully

Emblem 7:When Kirk arrives to provide backup in the helicopter climb up the ladder. From here look across the street into the opposite buildings window where there will be a majini and an emblem behind him.

Emblem 8:When you need to throw Sheva across to the other building, stop and turn around. If you then look back you will see the emblem.

Chapter 2-2: The Train Station

Emblem 9: Climb up the ladder onto the trains and then look at the pylon to your left where the emblem will be.

Emblem 10: When going through the caves you will come across a bridge. When you get to the bridge turn to your right and you will see the emblem.

Emblem 11: This one can be difficult. In the mining area after you come out of the cave you will need to look into the background where there is a factory. If you go to the bottom of the long ladder you should be able to see the emblem on the factory from there, you might need to move about a little though.

Chapter 3-1: Marshlands

Emblem 12: In the distance, to the North West, there is a wired pole with the emblem on it. You can either try and shoot it with the rifle or if you are playing on co-op, you can drive up to the pole and then shoot it.

Emblem 13: Go to the northwest corner of the map and the emblem will be under the roof of the hut.

Emblem 14: If you go the island in the centre and look under the hut you will see the emblem. You might need to move about a bit. If you are playing on co-op you can drive behind the hut and shoot it from there.

Emblem 15: After collecting all the slates and opening the door drop down into the marshes and turn around. The emblem is under the walkway.

Chapter 3-2: Execution Ground

Emblem 16:When you arrive at the Tricell tents go through them and look between the two to find the emblem.

Emblem 17: When you are at the harbour and the time runs out, turn around and go into the cabin. The emblem is inside of the cabin.

Chapter 3-3: Oil Field

Emblem 18: The emblem is under the first gate (not including the arch). If you miss the emblem you can shoot it when the boat stops.

Chapter 4-1: Caves

Emblem 19: When you climb the first ladder look down and to your right. The emblem will be down there.

Emblem 20: After the fire boulder part when you enter the new area use your rifle to look just below the giant lens. If you don’t have a rifle (but you should) you can wait until you fall down and there is a way to get it but I recommended having a rifle.

Emblem 21: When you need to pull the chain on the Green statue look above it to find the emblem.

Chapter 4-2: Worship Area

Emblem 22: On the last floor of the light and mirror puzzle the emblem will be in the northern room. When you go in turn around and look above the door way.

Chapter 5-1: Underground Garden

Emblem 23: When you start the level follow the path to you right. When you reach the end of the path you can shoot the emblem under the walkway.

Chapter 5-2: Experimental Facility

Emblem 24: After going to the end of the second conveyor belt (The one with the explosive canisters) climb up and go down the stairs. When you go down there will be two bins (big ones), one with a lid and one without. The emblem is in the bin with no lid.

Chapter 5-2: Uroboros Research Facility

Emblem 25: When leaving the area you start off in, check behind the large fans (The one on the right) beside the ladder to spot the emblem.

Emblem 26: When the rotating platform stops for the first time, the emblem is at the feet of the majini who is stopping the platform. It can be difficult to hit from your current position so if you wait until the platform stops for the second time you can look down and hit the emblem much easier.

Emblem 27: Before you call down the elevator and send somebody up, go from the back of the elevator and look down to find the emblem.

Chapter 6-1: Ship Deck

Emblem 28: This one is very difficult to get and is impossibe without using a rifle. The emblem is located on the mast to the south (opposite of where you start). It may be best to go up to a higher area to get this emblem such as the crane.

Emblem 29: The emblem can be found when Sheva is trapped in the cage and the enemies are coming out of both containers. The emblem is in the nothern container and you will need to throw or shoot a greande into it to hit the emblem. You could also shoot a majini with an explosive to blow up the emblem.

Emblem 30: When you go into the roomwith Excella and the flowers there will be two spot lights aiming at the flowers. The emblem is beside the spotlight on the left.

They’re are usually a few in a level and they can be quite tricky to find so I thought I would post a guide so that people who are struggling can find them. It should be either today or tomorrow so keep on waiting.

Developer: Capcom
Publisher: Capcom
Platform: PlayStation 3 (Version Played), Xbox 360
Genre: Third Person Shooter
Players: 1 – 2
Release Date: 13th March 2009 (EU)

Resident Evil is one of the biggest game series’ of all time. It was known for the cheesy characters and dialogue, the scares, the puzzles, the story and the atmosphere. Resident Evil 4 changed what Resident Evil was like. No longer was it about the scares and the atmosphere but instead it was about the action and the gun fights. Resident Evil 5 continues this but makes it even less of a horror game as there was only one point in the game where I was frightened which I will talk about later. Resident Evil 5 is all action, all guns and zero scares.

The game is centred about Chris Redfield who has been sent to Africa. On arrival he meets his new partner, Sheva, and the main new feature of Resident Evil is introduced: co-op. Chris and Sheva are partners; they fight together, share weapons and ammo and help each other out. The new partner system works really well in the Resident Evil 5. Like I said earlier you can share equipment which is very handy, especially when you split up. For example sometimes you assist Sheva and help her get to higher places. This will only be helpful if she has the correct weapons so you make sure to give her the rifle. I know it isn’t Ghost Recon but it does add a slight tactical edge to the game.

The whole co-op/ partner gameplay can be played with another player or you can stick with the A.I. Both ways work really well. The partners A.I is really good and I never saw anything unusual or strange happen with my partner. They know that if they have a shotgun to go up close, they know when to heal and retreat, they how to conserve ammo and they know how to help you. When you are playing with another player it works fine as long as you are with somebody who knows what the hell they are supposed to be doing. The co-op with another player is good fun and the only problem is that the screen changes a little and two black lines go down the side of the screen. You don’t notice after a few minutes though.

One thing that I loved about Resident Evil 4 was the merchant. The merchant would greet you with “Welcome, Stranger” every time you met which I loved. He was just so cool. He would let you buy and sell items and weapons at certain points throughout the stage. This has been sadly changed for Resident Evil 5 and there is no merchant at all. Instead you get the chance to buy any equipment or sell anything between each chapter. It works well enough but I miss the mysterious merchant

One thing that may annoy many people is the fact that you are unable to move and shoot. Every time you want to fire you are forced to remain on the spot and fire which should create panic but it fails to do so. It’s lack the atmosphere and just feels like a slow shootout. Some people won’t mind it though and will be used to it from Resident Evil 4.

Resident Evil 5’s story is similar to the other games. It is full of loads of crazy shit and characters who know each other. It won’t disappoint fans of the series but it may be confusing for newcomers who don’t know much about the world of Resident Evil. There is the occasional flashback and there are brief notes on the history of Resident Evil in the loading screens but it loads so fast that you can’t read the full paragraph. That can be seen as a positive or a negative though. Fans will like and newcomers will probably just care about killing the majini (The main enemies in Resident Evil 5). The people who have been following Resident Evil 5 and watched a lot of the trailers will have figured out most of the story anyway because of how much the trailers give away.

One thing that Resident Evil can always boast is the superb boss fights. The bosses in Resident Evil 5 are great fun and get bigger and cooler as the game progresses. They always involve shooting the big creature as much as possible but they are still great fun. Some of the bosses rely heavily on quick time events which will be loved or hated by people.

The puzzles were always something that Resident Evil was known for. There aren’t very many puzzles in Resident Evil 5 but the ones that are in it are decent enough even though they are very easy. I would give an example but there are only two or three so it would ruin the whole 3 seconds were you figure out what to do.

Resident Evil looks beautiful. The graphics are all crisp and clear with some good environments, characters, weapons. You know the usual stuff.

Resident Evil 5 is full of memorable parts. One of my favourite parts is the part when you are on the back if the jeep firing the gun turret. All you do is shoot constantly at majinis on bikes and trucks but it’s so fast and cool. It shows how Resident Evil has changed when the best bits of the game are the all action, guns blazing parts.

Resident Evil 5 does have its problems though. Like I said before the fact you can’t move and shoot will annoy people and so will the parts that use lots of quick time events. The main problem is the fact that it is not scary and doesn’t feel like Resident Evil. I only ever jumped once which was when I ran round a corner and went into a trip wire. That was the only time I ever jumped in the entire game. The action heavy gameplay works well despite it not feeling like Resident Evil 5. The cover system however is overused and makes it feel to similar to other games.

Resident Evil 5 does not feel like Resident Evil. No longer is it scary and full of atmosphere but instead it is full of shootouts and great action scenes. Some people may like the new gameplay, others won’t but when you consider it an action game over a Resident Evil game it is great and definitely worth a play.

+ Great Action
+ Amazing bosses
+ Co-op is good fun

- Not scary
- Doesn’t feel like Resident Evil

8.5/10

Resident Evil 5 is fantastic. I absolutely love it. It is full of some great action and the co-op moves and interaction works really well. Sheva never gets in your way and is a welcome help in the game. The problem that most people will be annoyed at though is that it doesn’t feel like a Resident Evil game. I haven’t been scared once yet and it is basically just shooting. It is also similar to Resident Evil 4 which isn’t a bad thing to be honest. I won’t give a review yet but so far it is a brilliant game.

I should get it tomorrow and I’ll tell you if it is good or bad and then I’ll review it when I complete it. I really liked the demo and can’t wait until tomorrow. Co-op should be really fun and I’m pretty sure it will be a blast by yourself too.

On the topic of Resident Evil 5. A multiplayer mode has been announced. It is called Versus. Versus allows four players and has two different modes: Slayer and Survivor. Slayer is a point based game which you have to kill the Majinis (The enemies in the game). Survivor puts the players against each other and players can play as Chris, Sheva or some secret characters. One on One or Two on Two are available for both modes.

Nearly a year on from this release and a lot has changed… not really…noone is closer to finding out who Arto Mwambé as he continues to rule the underground relms of techno and house. The great Move D was on the flip for this remix and although it did not tickle the critics it is disco gold…make your own mind up!!!
