Oh my! Well if you haven’t already managed to bestow your music adorning little ears on this mix yet, then today is your lucky day.

In preparation for the release of his debut solo album ‘Harvest Festival’ Mr Goddard (of Hot chip fame) has worked his minimal magic and put together this mix for everyone’s favourite online dance and electronic music magazine Resident Advisor. From acid house and bubbling synthesizers to minimal garage and some good old techno. This mix is an aphrodisiac for the ears from beginning to end, and to finish it off with ‘Feel the Need In Me’ (a funky little disco number by The Detroit Emeralds, that i haven’t heard for YEARS)… well it certainly has put a hop in my step! I dare you not to dance!

Now have some!

‘Harvest Festival’ will be released on Goddards label Greco-Roman on November the 9th.

Enjoy

With a 5 hour set locked, CO-OP will be showcasing the MCDE dancefloor manifesto in all its glory (i ncluding a few trademark Raw Cuts no doubt), with a journey fr om pitche d down proto-House to Disco-Tech deepness via a smattering of Funked-up jams – be there or get well annoyed by hearing about how good it was after.

The venue of choice for this particular P.A.R.T.Y. will be announced closer to the day of reckoning, although the rumor that it will be intimate, inner-city and, err, interplanetary (?) is by no means scurrilous. In fact, it can be confirmed that CO-OP #3 will play host to little more than 200 humans, meaning that the promoters fully expect the night to be 100% pre-sale.

As usual, CO-OP’s friends at Night Works Audio will be looking after the sound-system and your hearing with the installation of their Funktion-One bits and pieces, ensuring that the talent’s records are heard as some higher power intended. The CO-OP residents will also be doing some digging in support of the headliner and hence dancers can expect a thorough full body workout over the evening.

Anyone who knows, well, anything, or attended the August night, will already be aware that the aforementioned Jockey Of The Disc and now trademark CO-OP phatmosphere (like atmosphere but phatter, obviously) will mean busyness as usual. Two thirds of tickets sold out in advance of the Vincenzo show, so with another exclusive 5 hour Sydney set from a highly respected ‘artiste’ on the bill for December there’ll be an even higher chance of all consuming sadness for some on the 5th if the long game isn’t played. Plus, the sooner tickets are landed the cheaper they’ll be, its only fair – scuttle in the direction of that renowned emporium of electronic music information Resident Advisor now and do the right thing.

MOTOR CITY DRUM ENSEMBLE (RAW CUTS / GERMANY)

A Stuttgart native (hence the Motor City reference within his best known alias, it being Germany’s answer to Detroit along with Frankfurt), Danilo Plessow has been dabbling in the deeper shades of dance since his early teenage years.

With his inimitable Raw Cuts series seamlessly joining the dots between classic Chicago House, Detroit Techno and New York Disco (via Stuttgart, of course), and gaining support from every DJ with taste and ears (pretty much), Plessow’s take on dance music references its rich history while always pushing its boundaries. The multi-faceted nature of the MCDE sound is made even more impressive by the fact that its perpetrator is yet to celebrate his 25th birthday!

From the age of 17 Danilo has been gaining props for his recorded output, first for the Jazzy House and Broken Beat cuts created under the Inverse Cinematics moniker with his friend Joachim Tobias, which issued several 12”s, numerous remixes and one LP. Since the MCDE project came to life in 2008, Mr Plessow has been on something of a dream run, to date issuing 6 volumes of the Raw Cuts series which have united fans of deep Disco and deeper House with their distinctive cut and paste flavor.

2009 has already seen the MCDE remix touch applied to scene stalwarts DJ T, Steve Bug, Jazzanova, DJ Sprinkles and Toby Tobias among others, with original productions for 20:20 Vision and Mule Musiq also delighting dancers all over. Meanwhile, Mr P’s MCDE label and Four RosesMujaba) continue to turn heads, and DJ bookings keep the passport stamps coming for Danilo (recent jaunts include the UK, US and Russia), leading to the conclusion that the only way continues to be up for Motor City Drum Ensemble.
Booze? check. Munchies? check. Playlist?…Playlist?…Bueller? Don’t worry, Fever Ray’s Karin Dreijer Andersson has your back. And who better? The reigning Queen of Everything Eerie probably lives for this time of year when everything that she’s done is seen as beneficial rather than just weird.

Resident Advisor has collaborated with Andersson to present you a playlist that will be perfect for your Halloween bash this weekend. The mix features Shackleton, Suicide, Zola Jesus, Burial Hex, Bruce Haack, Amadou & Miriam, Neil Young and Krause Duo. Although it seems like an odd mix, the hour long track flows beautifully.

I want that Purple Stuff So I’ve been going on and on about Dubstep lately… but its real

I want that Purple Stuff

So I’ve been going on and on about Dubstep lately… but its really because … well simply I just love the sound. Especially the ‘Purple’ … if you don’t know what I’m talking about you have to check out most all the tunes and production from artists like Joker, Zomby, Guido, Gemmy and Ginz and then you’ll have pretty good idea of what the sound is. I can’t do it justice describing it but later down below when you get to the linked Podcast for Data Transmission done by Ginz … you’ll find a nice little description and a free download too! Click here if you just want to get to the music right away.

Anyway, in honor of the new era of Purple Reign … you might notice a slight design change on the blog … also I’ve been doing a bit of experimentation on my behalf with CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) which helps give the site the look and feel. It’s not the easiest but give it some time and I’ll hopefully be throwing in more features / design changes of my own.

Ok, so back to the purple … well, like I said I’ve been ranting about Dubstep to most of the people around me for a while now … I’m sure a lot of you are either thinking “enough with that shit already” and others are probably like “huh ? dub what?” and thats essentially what the problem is. I’m just trying to drill the shit in too much and I’m not doing it justice.

mmmmm purple drank

The first time I heard a Joker tune I was instantly hooked, the guy is like 20 and he’s just got such a sick ear for beats it’s other worldly, plus he draws on elements that are very familiar to me especially on the video-game blippy type shit. I can’t help but think of Sonic the Hedgehog games and Mega Man when I listen to them but then again they’re heavily Hip Hop influenced … the mix is incredible.

I’d been thinking for a while to do a post about the whole Purple crew and the movement and all that but then like a week and a half ago I decided to go perusing around RA (Resident Adivsor) and I found the perfect article so I might as well just link you to that if you want to know more about the original 3 [Joker, Gemmy, Guido]

Kings of Purple (Click the pic to go to the RA Article)

Going back to Joker for a second, I remember posting this Purple City video about a month or 2 ago on facebook and never posted it on the blog so this would I guess be the most fitting post for it ever to appear. Enjoy it, I know you will.

So yeah… I think thats probably enough about the whole purple thing to keep you satisfied for a while but in case you’re fiending as I find myself to be most of the time here’s the Podcast I mentioned at the start of the post and a solid description of the whole sound…

The Purple Wow Sound is currently taking dubstep by storm. “What the name of Jesus is that?” I hear the uninitiated cry. Well, it’s kinda like G-funk meets dubstep – big, colourful synths, sharp and ragged bass frequencies, and tight-as-fuck hip-hop inspired beats. Dr. Dre goes to Croydon basically. Alongisde fellow Bristol residents Joker, Guido and Gemmy, Ginz is propagating the sound across the world and has been creating some of the heaviest beasts in the genre of late. His DT Podcast crams 18 tracks into 45 minutes, with a bunch of hot-out-the-studio exclusives and plenty of phatness.

I’ve just found an article on Resident Advisor about warming-up dj’s and how important

I’ve just found an article on Resident Advisor about warming-up dj’s and how important a good warm up set is for the development of a good clubnight. You can find it here. The article deals with the problem that many promoters don’t invest a lot of time and money in an opening act, while it is crucial to have a warming-up dj who is complementary with the headliner. Very interesting article, and one of the best we’ve read on RA so far!

To end this post we’ve got again 2 old school goodies for you who are both extremely actual. Especially the first one, Elias Rahbani’s Liza Liza, because it got edited recently by The Sexican on Golf Channel and by The Popular’s People Front on their last Edit EP: ‘Sample Pleasures Part 4.’ The Golf Channel edit already had a limited pressing of 120 pieces, but it will get a full release very soon! So don’t sleep on this (again!) The second track is the B-side on the original 12″ from 1978; From The Moon.

i really splashed out last week – i’ve been commenting of late on the fact that i don

i really splashed out last week – i’ve been commenting of late on the fact that i don’t spend money on cds like i used to. a) because the price has generally come down, and b) because i’m always keen to find a bargain. one collection jumped out at me however, and i was more than happy to shell out €20 for it.

this compilation brings together a host of tracks from the famed junior boy’s own stable. it’s a really british label, and so it’s a really british compilation. i don’t mean that in a bad way whatsoever. some of (if not) the best people in british dance music history feature on this comp – underworld, the chemical brothers, pete heller, and of course, the granddaddy of british techno, andrew weatherall. you’ve also got acts like the happy mondays and primal scream, proving that the whole dance/rock crossover is nothing new, and it was far better before the days of ironic indie boys and pointy haircuts.

i was but a nipper when most of these tracks came out, and a lot of them are completely new to me. i know the whole nostalgia thing is completely clichéd and this release could well be seen as just a cash-in for the label big-wigs, but for me it’s a delight to get a chance to listen to this collection right now, at a time when the electronic spectrum seems completely caught between two generations, neither of which is keen to budge.

this is reflected by the recent appearance of an article on resident advisor article titled “the esoteric art of the opening dj” – an article which has provoked discussion on all of the major dance forums i frequent. everyone seems to agree that warming up is an essential part of a given night and that lashing out anthems as soon as the door is open just doesn’t work – so why do people still do it? one theory i have is that a lot of people who are trying to get into the dj world right now just don’t know their history, or, if they do, they don’t respect it. dance music hasn’t been around that long, and at the moment everyone seems far too concerned with having something brand new and fresh, rather than just playing good music, irrespective of age. this is compounded by the fact that, in today’s climate, something from way back in 2007 will sound ugly and dated, while something from the mid to late 90s will still fit into any set with relative ease.

as in my last post, i seem to be coming off all cantankerous, which is silly. i’m 24. i just see a whole load of problems in this scene, and even thinking about trying to reconcile urgency with respect and reverence with excitement clearly causes a major headache. to return to what started this whole tgv of thought, releases like this seem to serve two distinct purposes: to remind people of the so-called classics, or to introduce young’uns like myself to tracks they should really know already. if there was any justice in the world it’d fly off the shelves and onto the ipods of every budding dj out there. i guess you can’t have everything.

Playing at 111 Minna was great, five hour set, over five hundred people came thru, for the food mostly, but kept them entertained with good beats and now I can finally create a Resident Advisor dj page, which I’ve wanted for a few years now. Baby steps.

Follow the link to the page, I will be adding a top ten chart monthly and posting it here as well. On tour now, across America for two months, for the Alize Academy, promoting Alize and Izza Kizza. Officially I’m filming and photographing, unofficially, doing enough to get a work out each day and of course find time to laugh and met new amazing people! More updates to come, along with post European summer thoughts and initial Burning Man reactions. Good times.

An artist we really admire lately is Danilo Plessow, propably better know as: Motor City Drum Ensemble. He has caught a lot of attention last year due to his ‘Raw Cuts’ serie, at the moment he’s one of the hottest producers around as he’s getting a lot of remix requests. You can expect at least 5 or 6 remixes by him in the forthcoming months for artists like Jazzanova, Steve Bug, Art Of Tones & Toby Tobias, while 2 more MCDE remixes were just released this week, a beautiful midtempo remix of Nufrequency’s track ‘Fallen Hero’ on Rebirth with vocals by Ben Onono and a banging peaktime ‘Warehouse Dub’ remix on Get Physical of DJ T.’s new single ‘Shine On’.

We’ve got some great MCDE mixtapes selected for you:

If you were a fan of Erol Alkan’s first Disco 3000 mix, which he released as a podcast in 2008

If you were a fan of Erol Alkan’s first Disco 3000 mix, which he released as a podcast in 2008, you’ll be very pleased to know the second part is currently being hosted over at the rather wicked Resident Advisor.

Contrary to its predecessor – his second Disco 3000 mix isn’t strictly a straight up Disco set, but takes its beginning like a natural extension from Part 1, and blazes you through a whirlpool of super-sharp Erol Alkan edits, some Electro, some Cosmic shit, some re-edited classics and….well – just about everything he can get his hands on………like only Erol can!

Recorded on 2 x 1210’s, a Pioneer CDJ and a vintage synth for added FX – this is once again proven point there’s a reason why Erol holds the position as one of the most exciting and inspiring DJ’s and producers around.

In other news – Erol equally reveals there’s new original Erol Alkan material on the way as well as new Beyond The Wizard Sleeve material, AND that said new material runs along similar lines like the below Disco 3000 Resident Advisor Mix.

Let the blog’o’sphere manhunt commence…..!

Я долго ждала момента услышать хоть один микс этого мастера 2-step.

On Friday I was up and skulking around Cap Hill by noon (after eating breakfast with Jahcoozi a few short hours before) for the lunchtime dB Conference on (duh) music journalism where I got insights from writers from XLR8R, Resident Advisor, the Stranger and more. One striking fact of the panel for me was that in a room of about thirty artists, only two were female, myself included. Where the ladies at? Next year, how about a panel on the dearth of female artists in the electronic arts?

Making my Friday was a delicious French-toast crepe and Wasabi Bloody Mary from Grey Gallery; highly recommended if you like your hangover with pickled okra and a very, very clear head.

That night I returned to Grey to catch a little of the Kulturszene DJ lounge before heading over to Neumos for the Dirty Dancing showcase where Let’s Go Outside was tearing it up. I love this DJ for his music and for this. I wanted to stay but my heady bass-freak self propelled me all the way over to the Baltic Room for the Native State Showcase; this venue is the perfect match for the Dark Lords of Native State. Welder was keeping the crowd wobbling and soon KiloWatts (also performing at dB 2009!) was shaking the whole earth with his structured and driving brand of crunky bass- this sound pioneer gave one of the best performances of Decibel, for sure. The people were lapping it up like kittens. Evil little kittens.

It was hard to pull away but I had to head back over to Neumos for Deadmau5. I lost track of how many times during the festival I went back and forth between the Baltic and the Pike Street area; I walked it at least four times, took a cab twice, drove at least once and bummed a ride a couple of times. Once I took a hoola hoop.

I really didn’t know what to think of Deadmau5- I am familiar with his music and had done some research for a pre-Decibel article but had never seen him live and really didn’t know what to think of Mr. Joel Zimmerman. Downstairs at Neumos he was chilling and connecting the mad wireage inside his now-blue Mau5head, whose ears are a lovely velour, fun to rub, and insured. He was feeling a little pain from the night before in Edmonton where he and his manager had tied one on, but there was no hint of that at all when the Mau5 took the stage, because-

Deadmau5 completely blew me away. His performance was my biggest surprise of the festival. Dance-floor transcendence, and you know what I mean. I tend to fall into the brainwaves of “oh, everyone in the world likes this artist, so he must really suck”- but Deadmau5 simply wrecked mad destruction; the dance floor was so freaking packed you hardly even had to dance- all the people around you just moved your body around for you, and all you had to do was give yourself to it. I really don’t think Joel knows how good he is, despite all the Beatport awards and accolades; all he cares about is getting back into his studio and making music. No really, that is all he cares about.

However I did convince him to head over to the Church of Bass for the Subsequence afterhours and arrived just in time for the very last of Kris Moon’s set and then proceeded to get sticky with Phidelity whose psychedelic robotty-bass grooved perfectly with the dark dance church, all decked out for the festival with sweet black light art. We then got a second dose of Brendan Angelides aka Welder who performed this time as Eskmo, who is a dreamy poet of electronic intensity- I don’t know what world he comes from, but I want to buy a ticket.

Tune in next time for the Day 3 installment of Decibel Festival 2008: A Review, A Reawakening!
