With screenwriter Roger Avary and producer Samuel Hadida coming on board ‘Silent Hill 2′, Davis Films plans to kick off principal photography after ‘Resident Evil: Afterlife’.

Roger Avary

Familiar faces from “Silent Hill” are making their return to the video game adaptation. According to The Hollywood Reporter, screenwriter Roger Avary and producer Samuel Hadida have come on board “Silent Hill 2″, the sequel to the 2006 horror thriller. The two signed on while no director has been attached to the project.

Confirmation of Avary’s return was in contrast to his 2007 remark to Shock Till You Drop. At the time, he indicated that he won’t be making a return should director Christophe Gans refuse to return to the director’s chair for the second time. “I’m not gonna do Silent Hill 2,” he said. “If Christophe’s not gonna do it, I’m not…”

Roger Avary is known for his work on Quentin Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction”. His writing credits include “The Rules of Attraction” and “Beowulf”. He is writing for videogame adaptation of “Return to Castle Wolfenstein”. Samuel Hadida, in the meantime, has produced such movies as “Resident Evil: Extinction” and “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus”.

Samuel Hadida

The original “Silent Hill” centers on a young mother desperate to find a cure for her only child’s illness. Ignoring the protests of her husband, she travels to an abandoned town in search of answers and finds supernatural occurrences taking place there. It stars Radha Mitchell and Jodelle Ferland. The sequel is expected to begin shooting in 2010 after “Resident Evil: Afterlife”, which is currently preparing to film.

So I finally got around to watching Resident Evil: Extinction on one of the free movie channels

So I finally got around to watching Resident Evil: Extinction on one of the free movie channels … and wow, I’m sure glad I didn’t pay any money to see it. I thought the first Resident Evil was mediocre but watchable, and actually rather liked the second one. The third one? Not so much.

Rather than use my usual rating system of how soon it would put my wife to sleep (which would be: Immediately if not sooner), I’m going to revert to the “Things I Learned From This Movie” format that I stole from badmovies.org and that I use occasionally. Ready? Let’s begin.

Viruses have the power to dry up lakes and rivers, as well as to melt mountain snowpacks

All scientists working on cloning projects should be required to see Multiplicity

If you run a super-high-tech top-secret underground research facility, then obviously the best way to dispose of dead bodies is to take them to the surface and dump them in an open ditch

Just because you have a convoy of vehicles that you stole from The Road Warrior doesn’t mean you know how to use them

When someone is attacked and overpowered by a zombie carrying an infectious virus, no one will bother to check and see if that person has been bitten by same

Overrun by undead crows? Unable to see anything outside your vehicle because of all the birds flying around in front of you? Driving blind at full speed is always a good escape plan!

Oded Fehr is cooler than any film in which he appears (cf Resident Evil 2, The Mummy Returns, this, etc.)

Come the apocalypse, drug store makeup will still be available

It’s a sad, sad thing when somebody decides they need to airbrush Milla Jovovich to make her prettier. Milla Jovovich!

Your odds of winning in Vegas when it’s abandoned and covered by sand drifts are only slightly worse than your odds of winning in Vegas now

You can fit hundreds of zombies into a storage container if you really try

All the fashionable undead are wearing powder blue jumpsuits this year

One additional note: I found the soundtrack to this film to be unusually good for a trashy zombie flick; in particular, I really liked Collide’s cover of Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit” that is played over the closing credits. It was almost worth sitting through the film just to hear that. If you like dark, mellow, techno-industrial-melodic type music (think Sister Machine Gun or Nine Inch Nails in a relaxed mood), check Collide out — you can listen to a preview of “White Rabbit” here.

Also typical of many Lewton films, the supernatural is treated ambiguously, and it’s never entirely clear how some events should be interpreted.

36 CHILDREN SHOULDN’T PLAY WITH DEAD THINGS (1972)
A group of actors and their eccentric artistic director, Alan (Alan Ormsby), travel to a burial island rich in tales of evil curses and demons. Their task is to exhume a recently deceased body and try their hand at witchcraft in an attempt to raise the dead. While Alan means for his morbid plan to be a trick that ends in a surprise all-night party, everyone is stunned when the “trick” works, and the dead become uninvited guests.
35 Night of the Creeps (1986)
The film is notable attempt at a B movie and a spoof of the genre. While the main plot of the film is related to zombies, the film also mixes in takes on slashers and alien invasion films
34 The Beyond 1981
The Beyond (also known as E tu vivrai nel terrore – L’aldilà or ) is a 1981 Italian horror movie directed by Lucio Fulci. It is considered by some horror film fans to be one of the best movies made by the Italian director[1]. The second film in Fulci’s unofficial Gates of Hell trilogy (along with City of the Living Dead and The House by the Cemetery), The Beyond has gained a cult following over the decades — in part because of the film’s gore-filled murder sequences, which had been heavily censored when the film was originally released in the United States in 1983.
In the 13th century, evil knights known as the Templars — who sought eternal life by drinking human blood — were executed and left exposed so that birds could peck out their eyes. But when a group of people in 1970s Portugal stumble on the knights’ abandoned monastery, they unleash their rotting corpses to terrorize the land.

Before I begin, I should give my Man Card to Seth because I know he would ask for it after reading this so here you go Seth. *gives Man Card* Don’t go too far because I will need that back in a bit.

So.

I love movies. I love many movies and there only a few that I can honestly say that I don’t like. White Chicks comes to mind, that movie was so stupid but it had it moments, no it was just stupid, sorry to those who liked it, not my humor I guess. Where did this come from you might wonder?

Well insomnia has me awake again and I can’t sleep so I figured I will try to do something a little productive with my time so I am here to write about my love for movies. Seeing as I gave up my Man Card early on, this is not going to be about shoot’em up, crashes and explosion type movies with ample tits and ass. Even though I enjoy those movies and have seen many of them, I can’t ignore those other movies that I tend to end up watching at 3 o’clock in the morning. Like this movie for instance.

I didn’t catch it from the beginning but it was interesting enough for me to keep watching and before you knew it, I am writing this blog as the credits roll. Maybe it is that I watched that Martin Lawrence movie earlier, “Welcome Home, Roscoe Jenkins” and at the heart of that movie is a father and son relationship. I miss my Dad. Some days more than others and tonight, I just couldn’t help but be in a nostalgic mood.

My Father instilled in me a love for movies and something that I know has been passed on from him to me on down to my sons. It is a game almost where we watch movies and I point out to them actors that they may recognize from other movies. Now they are doing it for me. We were watching the new Star Trek trailer and they both thought they recognized one of the actors from the new Wolverine movie that we got to see the other weekend. I love that. =)

Excuse me. *punches Seth and takes back Man Card* Sorry Milla Jovovich and the beginning of Resident Evil: Extinction just caught my eye. =) Damn is she hot. Hey! Ali Larter is in this one too. LOL *gives back Man card*

So as I was saying, I love movies and with my insomnia I find that there are some really great movies out there that don’t get the full Hype Machine Treatment and I guess that is okay because they become gems for me to find. Like that movie I linked to earlier. It is one of those Body Switch Comedies, you know’em you love them. This one was a bit different.

It wasn’t exactly like the Jimmy Smits/Elen Barkin movie aptly named “Switch” but it was essentially the same. Male in a female body but this one had both the male and female. Boy and girl, neighbors, always at odds with each other happen to switch bodies and find love at the end.

What I enjoyed about it and all other boy meets girl movies is that no matter what situation the two people are put in, I know that it is scripted for a happy ending where the two that we know are meant to be together end up together. Assholes and lady assholes get the shaft or their asses exposed in public, same ol same ol right? Of course. It was scripted that way.

I guess watching Roscoe Jenkins earlier just put me in a mood to want to enjoy a movie and get into it, to allow myself to be immersed and enjoy the characters for what they are meant to be. They (The Jenkins Family) are just that, a Family. I enjoyed the movie, I enjoyed the characters. I love how I can watch a movie and then see the same actor in another movie. Let’s see if you movie buffs can identify the actor that was in both “Welcome Home, Roscoe Jenkins” and “Resident Evil: Extinction” then for fun tie him to Kevin Bacon. =) He usually has some great supporting roles.

So I was in the mood to watch a movie and I was surprised at how easy it was for me to get immersed into what can be considered a chick flick. C’mon, most boy meets girl movies are considered chick flicks and I do tend to watch them in the middle of the night when I feel like watching a movie.

I started this with a thought in mind but it really is just another opportunity for me to write. I have been wanting to get into a routine of writing something everyday and for the most part I have been able to but I think I had meant that to be in one place for one purpose. I would love to be called a novelist but I haven’t found my niche.

I can write comedy but I am not always the funniest person. I know I can write romances but I don’t think I can keep it a romance novel. I can write horror and at one time wrote what started out as a romance (short story) but ended up with a severed hand. Maybe I can write all three, a romantic horror with comedic undertones. *shrugs*

Hmm, that does sound interesting. I guess I could write a novel that I know could be a movie. A movie that I would want to watch with my buddies. Or something that I can watch by myself in the middle of the night. I think I have exhausted my creative juices for now so I will look now to take back what is mine.

Seth knowing what is coming tries to give back my Man Card but it is too late. He winces as a fist flies through the air and hits him square in the arm. =) I wished Ashanti had more of a role in this movie that I am watching right now (RE: Extinction) but I guess I can easily put on a DVD and watch her performance in “John Tucker Must Die”. No I can watch Ali Larter and Milla for a while and then maybe I will jump into some Resident Evil 5 for some Versus mode.

*knifes Seth as the credits roll*

America’s sweetheart Amanda Bynes stars in the fun comedy Sydney White! When tomboy Sydney (Bynes) is banished from the most popular sorority on campus, she is taken in by seven socially challenged but endearing guys. With the help of her new friends, Sydney stands up for outcasts everywhere and takes on the reigning campus queen in a popularity showdown! But can she succeed and also win the heart of gorgeous frat guy Tyler Prince? You’ll love this hilarious and sweet age-old story with a charming modern-day twist!

Entering College is a time of great transition, but Sydney White (Amanda Bynes) is secure in her plan to follow in her late-mother’s footsteps and pledge Kappa Phi Nu sorority when she arrives at Southern Atlantic University. Raised by a plumber father and a host of other construction workers, the comic book collection toting Sydney is definitely her own unique person and has some decidedly tomboy tendencies that contrast starkly with the ditzy, superficial girls she meets at her first sorority function. Sorority leader and student council president Rachel (Sara Paxton) takes an instant dislike to Sydney and vows to make her rushing experience intolerable. Only Tyler (Mat Long), a member of one of the campus fraternities, seems to see and appreciate the real Sydney. After weeks of hazing abuse, Rachel declares Sydney unfit to join the sorority and a despondent Sydney joins seven misfit boys in a soon-to-be-condemned house on Greek Row known as the Vortex. Fueled by the desire for revenge and a newly discovered sense of respect and belonging thanks to her new roommates, Sydney decides to fight back against the snobbery of the Greek elite and champion the rights of all misfits on campus by running against Rachel for Student Council President. By rallying the support of interest groups and misfits campus-wide, it appears that Sydney might just have a chance of winning. This film begins with an almost gag-inducing portrayal of sorority snobbery at its worst and soon gives way to a hysterically comic look at the under-representation of the masses in collegiate society. The satirical parallel to Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is heavy (this is the story of “Sydney White and the Seven Dorks” complete with Sneezy, Sleepy, and Doc) and the portrayal of interest groups on college campuses is farcical to the extreme. All in all, Sydney White is hysterically funny and surprisingly appealing to audiences of both genders and a wide age range. Rated PG-13 for some language, sexual humor, and partying. –Tami Horiuchi

Filmmaker Paul W.S. Anderson (Death Race), aka the “mastermind” behind the Resident Evil

Filmmaker Paul W.S. Anderson (Death Race), aka the “mastermind” behind the Resident Evil movie franchise (he only directed the first one, but wrote and produced all three installments) has recently stated he will soon start tackling the unavoidable next sequel, saying thet he’s writing “an adaptation of the Long Good Friday right now, set in present-day Miami. Then I will probably write Resident Evil 4.”

Each film in the franchise ends with a tease to the sequel, so judging from Resident Evil: Extinction you can expect the film to take place at least partly in Tokyo, Japan. Aside from the rather poor writing (especially for the second movie’s ending), my main beef with these movies is how much they stray from their video game source, both in tone and storywise (much like most video game adaptations).

Heck the films feel more like video games than the games themselves. Then again, Extinction is the flick that has the least in common with the games, becoming some sort of Mad Max with zombies, and ended up arguably being the franchise’s best film and a great return to form for Highlander director Russell Mulcahy. Yet one can argue that this is because the previous two entries had so little to do with the games that what they did have in common was more distracting than anything else.

So while Resident Evil 4 may prove to turn into an entertaining action movie, I’d still like to see a Resident Evil movie done right. Sure there’s that new CGI movie but that one simply expands on the games’ storyline, instead of retelling it. The Anderson series needs to be concluded in a final installment, enabling a more respectful filmmaker to reboot the franchise in my opinion.

Stefania Bianchi, Direttore artistico Trailers FilmFest
