According to NeoGAF and Destructoid this screen shot came from the set of the upcoming action/sci-fi film Battle: Los Angeles which we’ve never heard of. Not that it was a big secret Insomniac was making Resistance 3 after the cliff hanger ending and critical acclaim Resistance 2 had. I just don’t think Sony wanted to reveal it this way. Especially since the movie was supposed to come out until February 2011.

Looking back through some old articles I came across this list of the best single player games on PS

Looking back through some old articles I came across this list of the best single player games on PS3: Linkage.

This list was only written in April and yet the time since has probably been the best 6 months of my gaming ‘career.’

Not only have some fantastic solo player campaigns been released but I have also caught up on some single player epics I missed when they came out.

I knew the list needed to be extended and improved, as too many great single player games were missing.

So here you go – the top 10 is now a top 20 and any game from the initial list has it’s original chart position in brackets. You can also check out my full reviews (where possible) by clicking the title of each game:

20. PROTOTYPE

In Prototype you take on the role of Alex Mercer as he awakens during his autopsy ,wondering what the hell is going on. He quickly escapes, realising he now has various superpowers.

Mercer needs to find out what the hell has happened to him and why New York is infected with a virus that has turned half the population into zombies.

Prototype is definitely a game worth playing despite it’s various faults – it was a blast to play through if a little frustrating at times.

19. RESISTANCE 2

After saving England in the previous installment Hale is back in business to rescue the U S of A – since his incapacitation the Chimera have launched a full attack on America and Hale, as part of the Sentinal squad (made up of soldiers injected with the Chimera virus but kept under control), have to step in and stop them in their tracks.

A hard hitting but fun first person shooter.

18. MIRROR’S EDGE (10)

Mirror’s Edge wowed everyone with it’s crisp, clean graphics and it’s unique first person perspective.

The view takes a while to get used to and it had a few really annoying parts where it was difficult to time jumps etc because of the view but Mirror’s Edge is certainly worth playing through as it offers a style of gameplay that is totally unique in the current games market.

17. RAINBOW SIX VEGAS (9)

If you like your first person shooters with a bit of brain behind the brawn then Rainbow Six Vegas may be the game for you.

With a good old fashioned SAS vs Terrorists style plot and lots of fun set pieces Rainbow Six Vegas is definitely worth a shot.

16. RESIDENT EVIL 5

For all it’s faults Resident Evil 5, taken as a whole, is a brilliant game and one that I would recommend. Graphically it’s stunning and while it isn’t a hugely difficult game you’ll enjoy playing through and unravelling the story.

It survives the huge expectation of following Resident Evil 4… just. This is a game that everyone should play as Resi comes to the new generation of consoles.

15. KANE AND LYNCH (8)

You take control of Adam ‘Kane’ Marcus, a criminal on his way to death row for crimes committed in Venezeula. Kane is busted out of his prison van by a mysterious group called The7 who he worked with previously. They think Kane stole the money from their last job and stashed it somewhere.

If he doesn’t get them the money back in three weeks his wife and daughter will be killed. Kane claims he doesn’t know where it is but he does know who took the cash and will hunt them down. And so begins a thoroughly enjoyable ride into the desperate life of Kane…

14. BATTLEFIELD: BAD COMPANY

Chock full of explosions and with some really impressive destruction of buildings etc, Battlefield: Bad Company is like a huge big budget Hollywood blockbuster.

It’s a great, mindless blast of a game. Add some memorable characters into the mix and you’ve got yourself a very enjoyable, and playable, package.

13. HEAVENLY SWORD (7)

Another game that didn’t garner the respect it deserves, primarily because it didn’t live up to the pre-release hype.

If you like God Of War you will like this game as it’s similar in style but it looks gorgeous in HD and I believe did a few bits (combos/blocking etc) better than the first two God Of War games.

12. ASSASSIN’S CREED (6)

In Assassin’s Creed you play through Desmond Mile’s repressed ancestrial memories as Altair in the Medieval Holy Land (with brief interludes as Desmond struggling to find out what is going on in the present day).

You will need to research targets and carry out assassinations using a variety of options – sword, hidden blade, knife etc.

This game is great fun and I’m looking forward to the sequel which is on it’s way shortly.

11. GHOSTBUSTERS: THE VIDEO GAME

Ghostbusters: The Video Game’s plot is essentially the third movie – set in 1991 you’re a rookie who’s been drafted in to help with the ever increasing ghost workload. A huge paranormal blast sets off a chain of events that only one group of guys can deal with…

For me Ghostbusters was a short (5 hour) game that had me chuckling and geeking out despite it’s flaws – it won’t be to everyone’s tastes but it has a good single player storyline.

10. KILLZONE 2 (5)

Killzone 2’s biggest achievement is, possibly because of the brilliant graphics, sound and AI, that you feel involved and become embedded in the Killzone universal whenever you pick up the pad.

It’s not perfect by any means but it’s easily the best first person shooter I’ve played and I recommend anyone with a remote interest in this genre to check this out immediately!

9. BATMAN: ARKHAM ASYLUM

With some wonderful voice acting from the cast of the animated series, Batman: Arkham Asylum’s story moves at a good pace and familiar enemies are used to good effect throughout.

With such a vivid setting and a memorable selection of bad guys from Batman’s career it’s no surprise that Arkham Asylum is such a great game.

Despite the odds being stacked against it, Batman: Arkham Asylum is a quality title that has had a lot of care put into making it. I’d recommend this to anyone.

8. INFAMOUS

So good it’s the only game this generation I’ve played through twice (seeing it’s rating bumped from 8/10 to 9/10), Infamous is a great game.

You control Cole McGrath, a courier who just happens to be carrying a package containing an electronic bomb when it goes off, devasting the city. Somehow Cole survives and, after coming out of a coma, realises the explosion has given him electrical superpowers.

From there on out the city is your oyster and there is plenty to do as you try to track down the people behind the explosion.

7. BIOSHOCK

Bioshock has a great story to tell and it does it well with some interesting objectives and brilliantly designed levels.

There are several twists and turns in the plot, most of which are not obvious and it’s no surprise to me that a film version is in the works (although I believe currently suspended due to budget concerns).

Dark worlds like Rapture aren’t to everyone’s tastes but you really would be missing out on an awesome story if you decided not to book a trip to the underwater city.

6. GRAND THEFT AUTO IV (4)

One the biggest selling games of this generation GTA IV features the fortunes (and lack therof) of Niko Bellic – an immigrant arriving in the US at Liberty City to find empty promises and broken dreams from his cousin Roman.

As you work your way up the criminal ladder you’ll encounter all sort of dodgy characters and befriend even more.

Liberty City is a wonderful, if run down, place and Niko Bellic’s story is one you will enjoy playing through so make sure you pick this game up as soon as possible.

5. FALLOUT 3

After a tough few hours at the start you will find yourself rewarded greatly for sticking with this awesome FPS / RPG.

The story line sprawls across the world depending on your actions and you’ll find yourself taking a break from main missions to explore the wasteland or help out other characters.

I could go on and on about various things that happened and how cool it was, how great the story was or whatever.

But Fallout 3 is a game that needs to be experienced first hand and your story will no doubt play out differently to mine.

4. METAL GEAR SOLID 4 (3)

Hideo Kojima’s tale of Solid Snake’s final mission is a brilliant showcase of the Playstation 3’s power.

This is a game that often gives you three or four different ways of approaching things – whether you realise it or not.

Metal Gear Solid 4 rewards those patient enough to stick with it by giving them a great gaming experience, with some memorable boss battles, that they won’t forget.

3. DEAD SPACE (2)

Coming on somewhere between Event Horizon and Aliens, Dead Space is a third person survival horror game.

You take on the role of Isaac Clarke, a ship engineer who finds himself trapped onboard a stricken spaceship infested with an alien outbreak which is threatening to take over the ship.

This was one of the best games I played last year, it’s use of sound is immense and the fear of the unexpected they create is awesome.

I am not a big fan of horror movies or being made to jump all the time but Dead Space kept on the right side of all that by being unpredictable enough to be enjoyable as a ‘horror’ experience.

2. UNCHARTED: DRAKE’S FORTUNE (1)

Uncharted maps the journey of Nathan Drake as he tries to find the lost treasure of El Dorado encountering, among other things, rival treasure hunters and mercenaries.

The graphics are unbelievable and the gameplay is well paced and well thought out. The characters and story and really well conceived and Nolan North, who voices Drake, is absolutely spot on with his irreverent humour and wisecracks.

At its heart Uncharted is an action adventure game much in the vein of Indiana Jones or Tomb Raider but, and I say this as a fan of both of these, it is better than either of them.

1. UNCHARTED 2: AMONG THIEVES

Uncharted 2 is a complete gaming package. There is plenty of taking out bad guys, lots of puzzles and some wonderful dialogue.

Naughty Dog really have done a great job on the voice acting and the expressiveness of the character models. It is easily the best I’ve come across (though Heavenly Sword was a close second).

I won’t spoil the story but for those who don’t know, Nathan Drake gets pulled back into that murky world of treasure hunting for hire. I loved the story of this game – with a few twists I saw coming and a few I didn’t.

If you own a PS3 there is no reason not to own this game – if you only have an XBox 360 or Wii then get yourself a PS3 Slim and enjoy one of the most finely crafted games I’ve ever experienced.

—————————————————————————————————————

So it’s a double for Nathan Drake as he takes the top two spots with his exploration adventures.

With 5 new games in the top ten it’s great to see the wide variety of game styles on offer to PS3 owners these days.

Hopefully people out there will find this list helpful – feel free to drop me some comments below on the games or if you’d have put anything else in the list?

A NeoGAF user, goldsoundz, noticed this billboard in his town of Shreveport, Louisiana. Goldsoundz explained that Shreveport is a popular spot for film shoots, and that this billboard for Resistance 3 will show up in the movie: Battle: Los Angeles, which is set to come out early 2011.

Looking at the billboard, i’m guessing we will be seeing New York in this resistance, in my opinion, hopefully it’ll be more enjoyable than R2.

Somebody on Neogaf happened to spot the above billboard which clearly shows a logo for Resistance 3. There has been no official announcement yet but this was apparently supposed to be used for the upcoming movie, Battle: Los Angeles. This was apparently supposed to be an advert in the film which is scheduled for release in 2011. This suggests that Resistance 3 could be coming out around the same time.

If this is real it looks like Resistance 3 will be set in New York which we can see with the Statue of Liberty in the “A”. As I said, no word yet but expect to see something said soon.

Well today is Sunday and I thought that should be the latest name of my blog. Been playing my PS3 again this morning, working my way through InFamous at the moment, such a good game, I love climbing to the top of a huge building and using my electrical powers to fall to the ground with a mighty bang sending cars and pedestrians flying. Currently half way through the game, going to update the ”gaming” section of my blog later with some information on that and other goings on.

Last night was a pretty boring night for me, I didn’t move from the living room for a whole 4 hours! I watched new You’ve Been Framed, then Harry Hill’s TV Burp and then of course X Factor! TV Burp was as awesome as always, just the little things he picks up on are amazing, although the highlight of my evening was X Factor, I know I may sound extremely sad for admitting that but it’s so great to watch, just to see them all argue about each others acts is epic.

After I couldn’t get to sleep last night I thought to myself ”I know, lets what a Christmas film!”. I picked Elf, I love that film, Will Farrell is hilarious in it, the part when he jumps into the tree trying to put the star on top or when he screams in the department store ”Oh My God Santa’s Coming!” cracks me up everytime. If you haven’t yet seen this film I suggest you head over to Play.com where you can pick it up for £3.99 including free delivery!

So anyway, I’m off, I know it wasn’t the biggest and most entertaining blog but I thought a little update never hurt anyone. Time to play some Co-Op Resistance 2 with Stu (Twitter.com/ForgottenRomeo).

Word from the grapevine is the Playstation 3’s Platinum Hits (UK)/Greatest Hits (US) line has gotten 3 titles larger as Killzone 2, Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, and Resistance 2 join the club.

The games will now retail at the low low price of $29.99 (USD). No other word on when the price drops are slated to happen or how that translates into Pounds and Euros, but with the price cut of the PS3 to $299, the upcoming release of the PS3 Slim next week, and the addition of 3 of the best games on the PS3 to the Platinum Hits/Greatest Hits line, and I have to say Sony is playing a rather aggressive game of hardball for this holiday season.

I recommend all 3 games for purchase, as they are truly quality, and loads of fun.

Ah, Resistance 2 on the PS3, the indirect competition to the XBOX 360 game, Gears of War. Mind

Ah, Resistance 2 on the PS3, the indirect competition to the XBOX 360 game, Gears of War. Mind you, I have only played a demo of the first Resistance game, so I cannot compare the entry title to this one, except to note the fact that the sequel has no true co-op mode for the campaign as the original did. The story takes place in an alternate 1940’s where the Chimera have taken over Europe and are now fixed on invading North America. The single player campaign is one that I was completely satisfied with and did not seem like it was just thrown in as an after thought a la Gears of War/Gears of War 2. The focus of course is the multiplayer as in most FPS games, but the single player can hold its own with its enormous bosses, intriguing story line, and wonderful gameplay.

Graphic and sound:

The graphics in Resistance 2 are amazing, with highly detailed characters, weapons, and environments. Each staging area has a unique feel to it such as the beginning stage where the large mechanical robots are rampaging through the countryside, or the downtown city area with the Godzilla sized boss character. The player will feel the immense scale of the world and its inhabitants from the large environments to the enormous bosses. An enormous amount of enemy players both in online and offline mode are displayed with minimal or no lag at all. This is a game that visually, can only be appreciated on a high-definition television. The sound effects are on par with most first-person shooters although some of the alien weapons do sound a bit weak compared to the amount of damage they do. The musical score is the average run of the mill soundtrack that is quickly ignored.

Gameplay and controls:

Resistance 2 is divided between a single player campaign and multiple online multiplayer modes. The player continues the story from Resistance: Fall of Man with Nathan Hale in 1953 America. The United States has been invaded by the Chimera. One major difference with this sequel is that the player can only hold two weapons as opposed to cycling through various weapons in the previous entry. Also, the health bar has been eliminated and replaced by regenerative health system similar to Halo’s shield. Another major feature eliminated in Resistance 2 is cooperative play in the main campaign. The game seems more dedicated to multiplayer than the single player and as such, the campaign is short, but thoroughly enjoyable.

Multiplayer has two main modes, cooperative and competitive. Cooperative mode focuses on a player based team with mission objectives against CPU controlled Chimera. The teams can be from two to eight players with offline split-screen available as well. The player classes to choose from are medic, soldier, and special ops. Five game types exist for competitive mode which are deathmatch, team deathmatch, core control, skirmish, and meltdown (available through a Playstation 3 download). Deathmatch is every player for himself. Team deathmatch is similar to deathmatch except that teams face each other instead of every player for themselves. Core control is basically a capture the flag mode with the player carrying a core instead of a flag. Skirmish is a 60 player match in which players are split into smaller squads with specific objectives to complete. Meltdown is the classic multiplayer mode from Resistance: Fall of Man. Players gain experience from battles in both cooperative and competitive modes that allows access to better weapons and skills. Controls in the game are very easy to use and similar to other FPS games. There are also contextual instructions in game for certain boss battles.

Overall thoughts:

Resistance 2 is much better than Gears of War in terms of story and gameplay. I’ve owned both games and I play Resistance 2 more. The game has many multiplayer modes to entertain most types of players and if one owns Resistance Retribution for the PSP, the game can be linked to the PS3 Resistance 2 for a special bonus. Between the epic boss battles in the single player campaign to the multiplayer modes, the game is a positive improvement over the original with one exception, coop mode for the single player campaign. I enjoy the fact that the player can gain experience from playing online which unlocks better weapons and skills, but the ranking system is still flawed. I would definitely recommend this game to anyone who is looking for a solid FPS on the PS3 and for the collectors, there is a limited edition version that includes an art book, a behind the scenes DVD, and a Chimera statue.

I have to say that this weeks Faceoff was another challenge. I’m a huge fan of both Resistance

I have to say that this weeks Faceoff was another challenge. I’m a huge fan of both Resistance 2 and Killzone 2, and they offer two very different perspectives on the FPS genre. Even so, it’s fun to compare the two premiere shooter franchises on the Playstation 3, so without further babble from me, let’s get this ball rolling!

STORY:

Resistance 2: Set in an alternate World War 2 history, Resistance has earth being invaded by an alien race called the Chimera sometime in the 40’s before WW2 began. The human race sets aside their differences for the time being, and bands together to stop the threat. Players take control of Nathan Hale, an American soldier sent to help combat the invasion in Europe, and later he is recruited to the American “Spectre Unit,” a ragtag unit of hotshot commandos who are tasked with being the opposing force to the Chimera’s colonization of Earth. And that’s really the long and short of it.

Unfortunately, most of the more compelling narrative devices aren’t told through the story, but through the intel documents scattered throughout the chapters as you progress. I have to say that the story and characters are surprisingly well thought out and detailed. Developer Insomniac really put in a lot of work to make their world believable, it’s unfortunate that not all of it is told through the game. All the same, it’s still a fascinating story and level of detail.

Killzone 2: Killzone’s narrative, which spans 3 games (Killzone on the PS2, Killzone: Liberation, on the PSP, and Killzone 2 on the PS3), is just as layered and complex as Resistance, but also fails to deliver much of the excellent background through the game, and instead it is also relying on gamers to collect intel, and actively pursue the backstory. The story is a futuristic war setting, with a more realistic bend to it as opposed to the usual Sci Fi trappings.

The story revolves around a race of exiled humans called the Helghast, who wage a war against the ISA. The gritty, harsh environment of planet Helghan is what turns these former humans into another race. They are stronger, faster, and overall more resiliant that a normal human being, and they are led by evil dictator Scolar Visari. Killzone 2 revolves around a group of soldiers tasked with assaulting planet Helghan and capturing Visari in the hopes that this will put an end to the ISA/Helghan conflict. They soon discover that the Helghast are in possession of a weapon that could turn the tide of battle against the ISA.

The stories of both Killzone 2 and Resistance 2 are deep, well thought out, and detailed, but unfortunately, most of it is hidden in the game itself, or through ARGs (Alternate Reality Games) spread out across the internet. It makes the experience more interactive, I suppose, as fans of both franchises become more active participants in uncovering the game’s narrative threads, but for an average joe that just wants to sit down and play the game and get a good story, they are only getting just that, “a good story,” and not really the truly epic conflict that both games actually embody.

I’d probably give the win to Resistance’s narrative overall, as it’s alternate take on World War 2 is very compelling, and feels more grounded in history (due to the twisting of current us history). Killzone 2’s story, while excellent as well, just doesn’t have enough meat on it’s bones in the end.

CONTROLS:

Resistance 2: To go along with it’s out of this world sci fi premise, Resistance 2 features precise, “arcadey” controls. They are smooth, responsive, and intuitive. I can’t really say much else about it. Resistance 2 controls like most modern day FPS games like Half Life and Call of Duty 4, and shares similarities with those games control layouts. You are never battling the controls, and it never feels like you can’t hit what you are aiming at, due to a rather generous aim assist.

Killzone 2: A surprising departure from typical console FPS controls, Killzone 2 does not try and mimic the precise movements of a mouse and keyboard. Instead, the game opts for a very heavy, “sluggish” feel to the controls. The characters are burdend with heavy armor and weapons, and they feel like it when playing the game. Some people love it (like me), some people hate it. Personally, I think they feel really tight and realistic. Since the game’s release, however, there have been patches and updates that have allowed players to further customize the sensitivity of the controls to their preference.

All in all, however, I’d give the controls edge to Resistance 2. The fast paced, arcadey feel puts the controls in the same category as games like Halo and Call of Duty 4, which are praised for their controls, while Killzone 2’s controls are split down the middle, with some loving it, and others hating it.

GAMEPLAY:

Resistance 2: Naturally, Resistance 2 is a First Person Shooter, and in that respect, it’s similar to every FPS on consoles when it comes to exactly how the game is presented (hint: from the first person perspective). But where Resistance sets itself apart is with a few twists to the genre.

First of all, Resistance features an array of creative, “fantasy” weapons, instead of going for gritty realism. For example, players can use a weapon that’s primary fire shoots through walls (while highlighting any enemies hiding behind them), and whose secondary fire will put up an impenetrable shield to protect the player. Other weapons, like a Magnum, fires a primary bullet that lodges into an enemy, but when the secondary fire is pulled, the bullet will detonate like a bomb.

Other weapons include a sniper rifle that slows down time, a Chimeran assault rifle that can “tag” enemies, making each subsequent shot target wherever the tag landed, and also a weapon that shoots out buzz saw type blades that ricochet around the room, decimating any enemies caught in it’s path. Each weapon is unique, and has an equally unique primary and secondary fire.

The set pieces in the single player are also exceptionally well done, and feel on par with any sci fi blockbuster movie (such as a particularly memorable battle with a 300 foot tall Leviathan; a gigantic beast with razor sharp fangs and claws, who is hell bent on destroying Chicago). There is a lot of variety in mission structure and locales, so you never really feel that repetitive sting that other FPS titles can suffer from.

But that is only one aspect of the Resistance 2 package. On top of the 12 hour single player campaign, there is a separate, 8 player cooperative campaign that has players progressing through a parallel story, and helping to repell the Chimeran fleet. In this mode, players can choose a “class,” which allows them to specialize in one of three groups: Soldier, Spec Ops, and Medic. These three classes have their own role to play in an effective team.

Soldiers are the main fighters of the team. They use a gatling gun called a Wraith, which is large and powerful, tearing through enemies, but is also capable of putting up a large protective shield that the team can use for cover. Soldiers take the brunt of the attacks, and generally kill the most enemies.

Spec Ops are the offensive support. They use an assault rifle equipped with a scope (like a Sniper rifle), and can pick off enemies from afar, but their primary task is to toss out ammunition and grenades to allies that need it. With the Spec Ops, they are able to help the Soldier class indefinitely keep his protective shield up, and Wraith firing bullets.

Medics are rather self explanatory. They are the main defensive support character, as their primary weapon allows them to drain health from an enemy and use it to heal enemies, as well as restoring the players own life. They are also the best at reviving downed teammates, and do it faster than any other class in the game.

On top of this, players gain what are called “Beserks,” which are specific to their class, and gives them an edge. For example, one Beserk for the Medic allows him to set up an area of affect healing aura that will automatically replenish any allies who stand in the way. Another allows him to use his primary fire to paralize whatever enemies the beam trains itself on, allowing for the other characters to get in some free hits.

Players gain experience points for killing enemies, doing things pertaining to their classing (healing, protecting, dispensing ammunition), and completing the missions they are given. These experience points add to their level, and as they increase in level, they will be rewarded with more options for how to customize their character, from physical appearance, to armor, to weapon loadouts, and even new Beserks).

That may seem like a lot packed into Resistance 2, but it still doesn’t end there. Also included is a 60 player Skirmish Mode, which allows 60 players to form squads and battle it out over a series of missions and game types that seamlessly stream from one objective to the other. Players could start a match with some Team Deathmatch, and have that segue into Assassination, or Sabotage like missions.

As far as FPS titles, go, Resistance 2 packs a lot onto that Blu Ray disc, and it’s all highly addictive and enjoyable.

Killzone 2: Also a First Person Shooter, Killzone 2 is a decidedly more somber and realistic approach to warfare. The game never plays up it’s sci fi setting too much, and it feels more like you are playing a war game, just set in a future with space travel and flying military craft. The single player campaign is fairly lengthy, at least 12 hours or more, and the gameplay is frantic and frenetic. The game is a series of campaigns that main character Sev and his squad must complete in order to get to their primary goal, which is to capture Emperor Scolar Viscari.

The missions are rather varied, and the locales, despite being confined to just the planet Helghan, are also diverse and interesting. The muted color palette does nothing to dissuage this, it truly feels like you are a part of an epic conflict. Set pieces are also very well executed, with quite a few intense, hectic gunfights against literally tons of Helghast troops.

Like Resistance 2, Killzone 2 also features a rather robust multi-player offering, even if it is missing a co-op campaign, and no split screen gameplay. The game features 32 player matches, on a variety of maps inspired by the single player campaign.

The game also features a class based system that is much more in depth than in Resistance 2. There are 6 primary classes, each with a Primary Badge, and a Secondary Badge. For example, a Medic has a primary badge that allows him to revive downed players. His secondary badge allows him to throw out medi-paks that allies can pick up to heal themselves during battle.

Players will gain experience points for killing enemies, and they will gain ranks as that experience accrues. By ranking up in a specific class, and performing certain tasks within that class, players will gain those secondary badges and other perks.

On top of this, players are also able to mix and match a Primary and Secondary badge, to create a class more suited to their play style. For example, if the player wanted to revive allies, and request air support from a sentry bot, they’d combine the Medic’s Primary Badge, with the Tacticians Secondary Badge. Or maybe they’d like to be more cunning and stealthy, they could combine the Scout’s Primary ability of cloaking himself, and the Sabotuer’s secondary ability of throwing out proximity C4 charges, and sneak around planting bombs in key enemy locations.

Added to Killzone 2’s multi-player mode is the ability to also segue from one game type into the next (like in Resistance 2’s Skirmish mode, although in Killzone 2, it is called “Warzone”), and the ability to set up in game tournaments amongst clans, and wager “Valor Points” against other clans.

Killzone 2’s multi-player is ultimately more focused polished and paced, with an emphasis on teamwork and squad coordination (within a 16 player team, they can form 4 squads of 4, and work as a smaller group within a larger group to complete tasks), whereas Resistance 2 is more on the fast paced, with an emphasis on large scale, frantic battles (although coordination and teamwork is useful).

Both are excellent gameplay experiences, but I think in the end Killzone 2 is more polished in it’s overall offering, while Resistance 2 throws so much at the player it could easily become overwhelming (60 player matches, while a hoot, are crazy intense).

GRAPHICS:

Resistance 2: Not a slouch in the visual department in the least, it is a step up from it’s predecessor in terms of texture detail, lighting, and animation. Weapon effects are impressive, and backgrounds are rife with detail and ambiance. While the game can’t stand toe to toe with the likes of Killzone 2 or Gears of War, there is some very excellent visual work going on in the game.

Even more surprising, is the fact that after the game is beaten, some extra options are unlocked, allowing players to turn on and adjust the intensity of effects like motion blur and depth of field. Toying with these settings actually improves the visual quality of Resistance 2 significantly, and I have to wonder why developer Insomniac didn’t simply turn them on as default.

Killzone 2: A lot of hubbub has been generated over the years concerning Killzone 2 and it’s visuals, but all that matters in the end is the result. And what a result it is. Currently, I think it’s safe to say that Killzone 2 is the bestlooking console game of all time. Character animations, texture work, effects, ambiance, lighting, this game is simply a technical marvel, and it simply shatters any preconcieved notions of what a console like the Playstation 3 is capable of producing visually.

It has undoubtedly raised a bar that many FPS games will be held to in the future. I don’t think I’ve ever been as immersed in a game world as I was with Killzone 2. The level of detail in each of the environments is simply astounding. The only issue with the visuals I can immediately point out is that the lip-syncing is off during dialogue scenes. Considering how lifelike and fluid everything else is in the game, this sticks out like a sore thumb.

This is kind of a no-brainer, and a little unfair to Resistance 2. Insomniac’s Resistance engine is fantastic, don’t get me wrong, but Guerrilla Games set out to show off the power of the Playstation 3, and in the four years it took them to develop Killzone 2, it has done just that.

No other game on the console compares (although games like Metal Gear Solid 4, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, and the upcoming God of War 3 and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves are certainly rattling Killzone 2’s throne, if not preparing to overthrow it), and, truthfully, no other game released on any console features the level of detail that Killzone 2 presents.

CONCLUSION: I’m still personally torn on this decision, as I truly love both games, and for very different reasons. In the end, however, I’d have to say that Killzone 2 is the more comprehensive game, featuring a great combination of visuals and gameplay that is simply unmatched in the FPS genre on consoles. The single player is epic, and the multi-player is deep and customizable, with some excellent features. It’d be easy for me to be partisan, and simply say, choose both, but if you only had to choose one, you can’t go wrong with Killzone 2. It’s a showpiece not just for the Playstation 3, but for the FPS genre on consoles.

WINNER:

Having played and enjoyed the two PS3 Resistance games (reviewed here for the Top 100: Resistance: Fall Of Man and here in full: Resistance 2) I was really pleased when they announced a PSP Resistance game.

I was even more pleased when it was confirmed as third person (first person doesn’t really work on PSP) and soon the screenshots came out looking great.

As I fired it up I’ll admit I was excited. The game bridges the events between the two PS3 games across the other side of the world and into Europe.

You control James Grayson – a deserter in the British Army who has a break down after being forced to kill his brother, who was infected with the Chimera virus.

Grayson’s expertise in Chimera Conversion facilities sees him get a shot at redemption and a chance to avenge his brother’s death.

For a PSP game this is big stuff. The cut scenes are high quality, certainly as good if not better than most PS2 games and the script is pretty strong despite a few forced ‘Britishisms’ from the main character.

The graphics in game are really good as well and Resistance has little trouble in putting five or six enemies on screen at one time with no sign of slow down. Impressive.

Controls take a while to get used to (stick to move, face buttons to aim) but once you get the hang of it it’s the closest we’ll get to a second stick. Changing weapons with the d-pad can be a chore if you’re also running using the stick but it’s a minor inconvienience.

The levels are actually quite long for a portable game, especially as checkpoints don’t save your progress. The game saves at the end of each chapter. This was a real gripe for me as it meant if a level was 40 mins you had to, effectively, play it in one go as getting up to the third or fourth checkpoint then powering down would mean starting the whole level again

A bad design oversight in my opinion, surely it wouldn’t have been too hard to be able to save wherever you wanted? Or at least at the checkpoints?

The score and general sound effects were really good, I enjoyed the way some of the music really ratcheted up the tension – particularily during boss battles.

The weapons were as inventive as ever, I loved the chaingun – especially as it also had a shield!

Some of the levels were very frustrating, be prepared to die quite a few times on some of them, though it’s often a case of rethinking your strategy and maybe using a different approach.

Resistance Retribution is a most welcome addition, not only to the PSP, but also to the Resistance universe. This is definitely up there among the best PSP games I’ve played.

There is even a mode where you can connect your PSP to your PS3, load up Resistance 2 and ‘infect’ your PSP. Grayson becomes infected and some of the cut scenes and character responses to you change. It’s a nice touch.

In fact if it wasn’t for the frustration caused by the lack of proper save points this would probably have got a 9.

Rating 8/10
