Bangkok. Check! Pattaya. Check! Krabi. Check! After being to many of the popular (known to Indians)

Bangkok. Check! Pattaya. Check! Krabi. Check!

After being to many of the popular (known to Indians) destinations in Thailand both on work and leisure, I decided to explore an off-beat island which is very popular among locals but is never recommended by Indian travel agents. My aim was to take a 3night-4day break, all within a budget of 40000 rupees per head (airfare included). The plan was to land in Bangkok and drive to a pier leading to an exotic beach, where the waters are as blue as the faces of Australian cricketers when beaten on home ground. Basically, I wanted to avoid spending too much money on connecting flights within Thailand. Pattaya was certainly an option but it is neither exotic nor has the blue waters I had in mind. Besides, I had already been there on an official trip.

White sand, deserted beaches, blue waters and margaritas is what I was dreaming about. And I had just 4days, 3nights off from work. With all these constraints and dreams I started my research and found KOH SAMED. Also spelt as Koh Samet. When you tell anyone about Koh Samet, they will immediately nod and say “Oh Koh Samui. Nice place”. I am not talking about Koh Samui here! Let that be very clear because I can’t have people commenting on my page about how the cost estimates in my reviews are all wrong

Koh Samet is a small island off the east coast of Thailand. There are more than 7-8 beaches on the island and each has its own character. Most beaches are on the eastern side of the island.

Hat Sai Keow (Diamond Beach) One of the most beautiful and most popular beaches on Ko Samet, Hat Sai Keow is 1 kilometer long and 25 – 30 meters wide. The name speaks for itself, Hat Sai Keow, which literally means Crystal Sand Beach, is a nice beach filled with activities. Tourists are entertained by the spectacular fire shows and the peculiar population of short legged dogs. These dogs are believed to be interbred from many mongrel species brought over from the mainland in the 18th century by exiled Burmese hill tribes. Due to the shallow boat used by the Burmese these dogs never had a need to develop legs longer than 4 inches.

Ao Noina Ao Noina, which is located near Hat Sai Kaeo, has a different ambience to Hat Sai Kaeo. It is quieter and therefore more suitable for those looking to relax on the white, sandy beach.

Ao Hin Khok Located close to Hat Sai Kaeo, Ao Hin Khok is therefore quite crowded. For visitors interested in sunbathing, windsurfing in the crystal clear water this is the good place.

Ao Phai Ao Phai is a small bay on Ko Samet which draws repeat visitors intent on relaxing. Suitable for those who are tired of crowded beaches and nightlife activities, Ao Phai offers a quiet natural retreat.

Ao Phutsa Ao Phutsa, which is set in a peaceful atmosphere, is located near Ao Nuan and is well known for its white sand and clear water. Ao Phutsa has a small, cozy resort, which provides nice services in a well decorated compound.

Ao Nuan a small quiet bay with nine bungalows.

Ao Wong Duean Ao Wong Duean is the second largest beach on the island (the first being Hat Sai Kaeo). Ao Wong Duean attracts tourist groups during both the high and low seasons due to its beach and good accommodation. On top of this, seafood restaurants with nice views are also available.

Ao Wai Ao Wai is located within a short walking distance of Candlelight Beach. Shaded by coconut trees, the beach is quiet and scenic.

Ao Kio Na Nok This bay is decent for those planning to keep their distance from the busy, crowded beaches and nightlife. From Ao Kio Na Nok, visitors can actually walk to Ao Kio Na Nai which is the ideal spot on the island to see the sun rise and sun set.

Ao Karang This is the best place on the island to experience the traditional lifestyle of the residents of Ko Samet, where there also are a number of seafood restaurants providing seafood dishes.

Ao Prao Ao Prao is one of the quietest beaches of Ko Samet. Located quite far away from the nightlife of Ko Samet; Ao Prao is preferred by travelers who quietly enjoy the sea, swimming and sand.

We decided to go to Ao Prao and stay at the Le Vimarn Resort primarily because it was highly recommended online. The website of the resort looked like this: http://www.levimarncottage.com/

(Just a reminder that the pictures on my blog are not instagrammed. I like to share the original images as taken by my modest digital camera)

Firstly, if you are travelling from Bangkok to Le Vimarn (Ao Prao Beach), please note that it takes 3-4hrs to get to the pier, by taxi or bus. From the pier, the last “complimentary” ferry to the hotel leaves at 4pm, not 5pm as we were told on the internet. If you miss the ferry you will be ripped off by public ferry operators for nearly 1400bahts! We reached at 4:30pm and the hotel guys were not helpful at all. They simply offered us a speed boat at 2000 bahts as an option after charging us 10000bahts a night for our room!

Also, try not to allow the public ferry guys to delay your trip to the hotel post 5pm because the tide gets too high. We left at 6pm and the boat driver stopped in the middle of the sea and announced “we cannot go to Ao Proa”. We forced him to then take us to Sai keow where the tide was lower, from where he put us in a taxi to Ao Prao Beach. Yes, this island has taxis!! We had no idea about that critical little detail.

The taxi ride was a blessing in disguise bcoz we got to see some of the other beaches this island of Koh Samet had to offer. Ao Phai is one the prettiest. Please also remember that your booking in Le Vimarn includes the entry fee at the national park gate which one needs to cross to make his way around this island. So don’t be fooled by the guard who might ask for 400bahts per person to enter the park. We stood firm and were allowed in without a fuss. After the adventurous 20min taxi ride, through trecherous terrain, we finally reached Le Vimarn Resort.

The sunset was absolutely stunning and the view from our room was breathtaking. But the biggest tragedy was the fact that I went there with my cousins. We stayed in the Spa Villa(3 of us) where the shower had no doors! Everything about the hotel assumes you are there with your better half. The resort has a private beach and the rooms are quite tastefully done. But the service leaves much to be desired. If you are on the beach chair wanting to order your next margarita, you might have to wait an eternity unless you walk up to the reception area to find someone in uniform! Self service seems to be the unsaid rule at this place. After paying so much money it kinda ticks you off that there is nobody to make you the laziest you can be. Even at the pool we had to go hunting for someone to give us towels and drinks.

If you despise lizards, I would suggest you give this property a miss. I was there in April and the place was swarming with reptiles. Some might find it intriguing but for some it might not be very comforting. There is also a constant contest between noisy hornbills which takes a lot of getting used to.

Everything in Le Vimarn is over-priced, be it the food, kayaking or the massage. Instead, I would suggest you eat your free breakfast (which has little or no variety for vegetarians), take a dip in the private beach waters, then take a taxi for 200bahts to Sai Keow beach. Once there, you can walk along the eastern costline of the island and spend the entire day. Everything is much cheaper and better there; including the colour of the water.

We walked all the way up to Ao Phai beach and parked ourselves at this pub called Ploy Pub till late in the night. This place is bustling with energy and plays good english music. They also have a very spectacular fire show. I will recommend this place to anyone who likes to sit and drink for 4-5hrs straight without burning his/her pocket.

If you don’t wish to get out of Ao Proa but still want a cheaper option for massages, kayaking etc, then just hop across to Lima Coco Resort, right next to Le Vimarn. Their rates are much lower even though the two resorts share the same beach. There is a third resort on Ao Prao beach which is owned by the same guy as Le Vimarn. Its very unimaginatively called the Ao Prao resort. This property is as beautiful and slightly cheaper than Le Vimarn. We didnt get rooms at that resort and hence chose the latter.

My Verdict: Le Vimarn is a beautiful resort, meant mostly for couples. The look and feel is very close to the website of the resort. The beach is exclusive and clean. But the service is not up to the mark and the property is very over-priced for the location. After staying at the Rayavadee, Krabi, I am spoilt for world class service at premium properties in Thailand.

My Rating: 3/5
