Massively has put out another weekly Q&A for Star Trek Online and Week Two’s subject is Space Combat and I have a feeling this is the subject everyone has been waiting for, me included. Answers were given by Al Revera, senior game designer on Star Trek Online

The first thing that caught my eye was from the Question :

Drexel-: How will the use of our weapon systems and abilities be limited during combat?

In the answer Al mentions 4 possible weapons slots

Beam arrays

Cannons

Torpedos

Mines

This is the first mention of Mines which is good but there is nothing about Drones or Drone Racks and these are very effective in keeping an enemy at a distance if you’re trying to make an escape or trying to drain their weapons power I’m keeping my fingers crossed it comes up later like when I mentioned Shuttles and Boarding Parties and the nest day what does Ship Tactics Part II show use, that very subject. Cool Down Rates along with Limited Power will insure you have to think about what you’re doing and not just blast away like some crazed Khan

I like Al’s Answer the Fanboy’s question :

FanBoy: What will happen when you “die”?

In the answer Al shows some humor to a very serious question that every gamer, especially in MMO’s needs to know. What is the penalty for death? there is a five balance between being a good death and a throw your arms up in the air and walk away death. If it is to high then the player will get frustrated and lose interest in the game if it’s to light then this encourages reckless play and other players get pissed off, Games these days have gotten a lot more forgiving on the death penalty, partly because we do so much of it and mainly because only the hardcore players would put up with the great loss of time invested with a high penalty. That is a sure way to lose your subscriber base

Al’s answer to Grandpotato’s question is not exactly an answer

GrandPotato, eddie: Will there be boarding parties? If so, can you capture vessels, or does that just disable them or something?

We know there will be Boarding Parties but will they be able to take control of an opponents ship before he can Self Destruct. My answer would be NO. How would you feel it someone boarded your ship and took it from you after you’ve spent 10’s maybe 100’s of hours building it up. I would not be pleased and probably quit right there and if I did not quit I sure wouldn’t get into any fights unless I knew for sure 100% I was going to win. That being said PvE would be different…..?

There also a good question on Science ships and how they affect other ships. you can read the full Q$A at Massively and stay tuned for the third round of Q%A sometime in the near future I’m not even sure what the subject will be maybe Ground Combat if you have any ideas let them know

I’ve been blazing through the opening chapter of my thesis, which describes the stages of deve

I’ve been blazing through the opening chapter of my thesis, which describes the stages of development for the game studies discipline, and justifies my heavy citation of game criticism and datamining blogs. Suddenly, I started pumping out this really artsy stream-of-thought stuff about gaming, love and life. It was done over the course of about a week. During that week I was taking a lot of cold medication, which may be evident in the “don’t operate heavy machinery” style. The last section was done last night and this morning, following my uncle being taken off life support and passing away.

This stuff is quite a ramble, but there might be some neat / inspiring ideas for someone in there. As always. Feel free to argue.

A caressing sho-ryu-ken

Games are dangerous lovers. They pull. They seduce seemingly by doing nothing. They make you twitch while you dream. They send wireless commands to your brain, flooding you with endorphins. The gaming academic brushes the surface. She kisses and tells. But she doesn’t put out. She takes that fleeting contact and runs guiltily back to her TV. Together, they write a book about her experience.

Academic gamers are gamers. Hardcore gamers. They have given their bodies to their lovers. Their fingers are calloused with WASD. They stand in the cold on launch night. They are simply gamers who have gone to school, and like gamers should, they consider it a game. Level 4 English, Level 2 Marketing, MA Prestige Class. They push the boundaries. They mod their education. They apply what they know about games to whatever it is that they study. In Soviet Russia, game studies you. And so they go from mini game to mini game: 2 hours of death match, 4 hours of gas jockey, 1 hour of Mario Kart, 5 hours of delivery driving, 10 hours of Dungeons and Dragons, 7 hours of accounting. FPS, MBA, RPG, BSc, L2P: Looking for Group, Looking for Girl. Hold B to detach turret, get a real job, don’t stand in the fire. Farm, Grind, Camp. Collect the coins. Collect the hearts. Fight on the flag, not on the road. Find the Princess.

Gamers practice lovemaking in a world of violence. Their eyes are witness to atrocity, but their hands are seducers on the game pad. “I love the power glove.” Always seeking finer control, responding to greater sensitivity. Methodical but adaptive. Stringing combos together. Up up down down left right left right. A caressing sho-ryu-ken. A circular motion with one hand. A precise tapping with the other. Now switch sides and swirl the other way. Delight in shaking responses: Rumble Pack, Dual Shock, force feedback vibration. A purring heartbeat. Wordless shuddering tactile approval.

The controller inspires the hand. Hold back, hold the trigger, trigger the response. Joysticks with triggers. The hand’s movement is intricate and intuitive. It is automatic but not robotic; unthinking but also passionate. Squeeze the trigger: an instrument of motion and screaming and explosions. The instrument guides the fingers: not by intention, but by virtue of its design. The hand is moving. The mind is elsewhere. It is just happening. Lock and load. They call it flow. Short controlled bursts. Empty the clip.

The sensational media brands the gamers as dangerous. Their hands are the scapegoat. Their hands know only the controller: cannot distinguish between a 9mm and a Dual Shock. But gamers recognize the difference. Just as the boxer knows the difference between a man and a bag. The boxer practices his art against a bag. Gamers practice lovemaking in a world of violence. The trigger of a joystick is not that of a Desert Eagle. But more importantly the reversal; the trigger of a hand gun is not that of a joystick. And when gamers are lovers, that which inspires the hand is not a controller. The lover inspires the hand. The body inspires the hand. The person inspires the hand. A caressing sho-ryu-ken. It is just happening. The lover is not a toy.

The gamer wades through bodies. The gamer is saturated with death and rebirth: a fantasy of do-overs and respawn immortality. Kill and die and return for more. Some would say they are de-sensitized. That gamers do not recognize the sanctity of life. But the gamer is keenly aware. The gamer’s senses are raw and serene. The respawn fantasy amplifies the awareness of perma-death: of tumors and pnemonia and diabetic comas. The gamer is grateful for the luxury of respawn. Gamers are attentive to the rules of the system, and the rules of the system are so very clear. Random car crashes and IEDs and stray shots. There is no save point. There is no safe spot. Aside from several years of dark isolation on the tail end of the 20th century, games have been social practices. The gamer is acutely aware of the importance of other people. Looking for Group. Looking for Guild. Looking for Girl. For the gamer, life is urgent and immediate and passionate. Life is short in the game.

The whole thing is a time trial. The blocks keep falling. The new challengers are infinite. Your stack of quarters cannot save you. The wiki doesn’t cover this part. There is no aggro reset. Life is short in the game. They call it flow. The lover is not a toy. Life is too short for playing games: too fragile and too fleeting to be toyed with.

A few weeks ago I was playing Star Wars Battlefront Renegade Squadron on Infrastructure Mode (Online

A few weeks ago I was playing Star Wars Battlefront Renegade Squadron on Infrastructure Mode (Online against other real people.) We were playing a conquest in Naboo. (It really didn’t look like Naboo.)
Let me explain the rules. To win conquest mode, you ,must either capture all the commant posts and hold them for 1 minute, or deplete all the enemies’ reinforcments. When you are killed, you can select a command post to respawn at and start again, but your team loses 1 reinforcment. You have to wait for a respawn wave, and you can only respawn if your team controls a command post (otherwise you’d have nowhere to respawn.) Command posts are captured by standing next to them untill the enemy colour drains out of them and your colour fills it up.

So, I joined in the game and we were losing badly. I’d spawned at our last command post, right at the middle of the map, with a massive battle raging all around me. I knew I couldn’t beat these guys (I got the game a few days before that) so I activated my stealth suit and got out of there. I made my way to a deserted enemy controlled command post and started draining it, still invisible. Meanwhile, all my teammates at the massive battle were either dead or about to die. Suddenly the enemy got the command post and all the dead from the battle had nowhere to respawn. I neutralised the command post I was at, and it started to slowly fill up with my colour, but my Stealth suit ran out of charge.
The enemy must have noticed me capturing their command post, because I started to see some dots on my short range radar, just around the corner. The command post turned completely my colour, but I couldn’t run, because the enemy would get it and then we’d be toast and my stealth suit hadn’t finished recharging. It was at least 8 to 1. And these weren’tv crappy AIs either, there were real people. They came round the corner and suddenly, a respawn wave must have gone off, because I was surrounded by my team, all those people who died in the battle and were stuck with nowhere to respawn for ages. Another massive battle started, and when my suit recharged, I activated it, and snuck off again, with dodging the orbital strikes all around me (its not an invulnerability suit you know).
When we finished the game, I wasn’t even at the top of my team’s chart, because I hadn’t killed many people.
I saved their butts! I bet other people have done that too.
If you have, well done.

Bueno, veremos…

I know a lot of people are going to be clamoring all over this case regarding a teen who killed his

I know a lot of people are going to be clamoring all over this case regarding a teen who killed his parents over the confiscation of his video game, calling for the immediate and permanent destruction of every “violent” (good luck defining this concretely) game on the market, but before that happens, I would like to say a word on this topic.

Violence in video games and its (apparent) effect on those who enjoy gaming has been an issue for quite awhile, thanks in particular to the brilliant work of one Jack Thompson, who – thank God – has been disbarred permanently from practicing law. Nevertheless, there are plenty to take up his mantle, and I’m sure this story in particular will jumpstart their position.

The judge who heard this case had a few parting words regarding the teen. Essentially, he saw the insanity plea the teen’s lawyers utilized as utterly without water, but still advocated that Halo 3 had some sort of effect on the teen’s decision-making abilities.

H’ok. So.

I will begin by saying this: of course gaming has a biochemical effect on people. Of course the type of the game someone is playing creates detectably different biochemical effects on people. But here is where I stop.

Let me be absolutely clear: violent video games do not cause violent acts. Period.

Playing video games does produce a biochemical change in the people playing them. Hell, that’s why we enjoy gaming. But just about every other life experience has an effect as well – watching movies, driving cars, doing homework, sleeping…every action has a discernible chemical effect that can influence our subsequent actions.

Here’s the crux of my argument: if the person commits a violent act, they are in need of help. With that comes the following: they shouldn’t be watching movies, they shouldn’t be driving, they shouldn’t be playing video games. They should be getting help, seeking medical attention, undergoing therapy, and being treated for their condition. If they are unable to tell the difference between the virtual reality of Halo 3 and the honest-to-goodness universe around us, then Halo 3 should not even be in the picture. Nor should there be weapons in the house, or violent movies readily available, or unsupervised driving outings, and so on.

Do you see my point? It’s not that violent video games cause violent behavior, or that they are in any way different from other stimuli that can alter our moods and perceptions. They are simply – yes, simply – another endeavor to be made aware of and approach rationally. Everyone knows getting behind the wheel when exceptionally pissed off is a bad idea; so is playing violent video games when one mentally and emotionally cannot handle it.

Me and countless friends and acquaintances should have been wanted for mass murder years and years ago if violent video games really caused violent behavior, given the quantity and quality of games we have played for more than a decade.

Oh, and as for empirical evidence: the advocates against violent video games are very aware of the fact that graphics and realism of video games have improved enormously in the last few years. What they seem to be omitting is the fact that the number of violent crimes within the primary gaming demographic – ages 12 through young adulthood – has decreased in the last several years.

For a personal anecdote, I knew someone many years ago (ancient history for some) who would play Mario Kart 64 with me, but would refuse to play Super Smash Brothers on the grounds that it was a violent game. I have a few things to say about this:

Doing something on principle in concordance with your beliefs is fine. I have no issue there.

If we want to compare the two games, it’s night and day. I fail to see how, if playing SSB causes me to want to beat someone to a pulp with my bare hands, playing Mario Kart would not have a similar effect in making me want to drive around as if friction didn’t exist, power sliding around the turns and swerving everywhere to avoid the obstacles and any red shells on my tail. What’s the difference? Why is SSB so much more dangerous than Mario Kart?

Anyone who has even an average amount of gaming experience will agree that SSB is like Barbie Goes to the Mall when compared to games that are supposedly in its genre – say, Halo 3. No comparison at all. In fact, SSB is downright funny to play (turn off all items except for bob-ombs and remote bombs, and set their frequencies to “very high”. holy crap on a stick).

What’s nonviolent about dropping bombs, firing shells, and generally using any means necessary to ensure you defeat everyone else on the race track? Is it just because everything’s brightly colored and painted with smiles?

The judge made the right call in saying that this teen was suffering from an addiction. Just make sure, gentle reader, that you don’t associate this addiction any differently from a drug addiction. The biochemical effects of an addiction are exactly the same, regardless of what the substance is that the addict desperately wants.

In closing, I’d have to say that this quote from a Slashdot reader regarding the case sums it up pretty well (as the defense lawyers argued Halo 3 caused the teen to believe his parents would simply respawn):

“Clearly Halo 3 is at fault. If they had some non-respawning game types this would never have happened…”

If you haven’t had your dose of stupidity yet, I’d invite you to check out this other Slashdot article regarding South Carolina’s recent decision to pursue a bill that would make the use of profanity a felony.

I even have a story from Facebook about gun control…but I think that’s another story for another time. Instead, here’s something to brighten the general mood:

(Edit: Here’s yet another study that shows absolutely no correlation between violent video games and subsequent violent behavior. I particularly like the bits about “moral panic” and politicians using violent video games to feign progress at their posts)

Sooo I went to Winter Jam today. It was a pretty good time, however, someone always has to say something just a little weird and somewhat sacreligious. One of the guys up on stage (they practically had a revolving door on the thing, so don’t ask me who) said we were ‘having a Jesus Party.’ Yeah…that’s right up there with singing Baby Jesus ‘Happy Birthday’ at Christmas. Stupid and seriously downplays the importance and weight of these things.

I saw something else irreverant today…‘They must have had a lot of lag back then, because they had to wait three days for Jesus to respawn.’ Admit it, you laughed!

Well it has been a long and sleepless past week.

First I turned 27 as I already posted. I managed to get a Boost for my birthday and all, so kinda special.

Then over the next few days I had issues with getting up late and stuff, eventually staying up from 9:30pm on wednesday night all the way till thursday night when I crashed out totally.

Friday it was when the Beerkips struck. Suffice to say the turnout was larger than expected.

The following attended, in no particular order, and well I probably forgot a few people, but if you let me know I’ll add you in to the listing just because I can edit this thing.

Bruno

Mr. Vos

Lawrence

Linda

R4N|307|

Mang

Ithuriel

Sando

Wolfmother

Sparks

Luke

Chris

z_brutalis

As I said, I’ve most likely left some people off the list, don’t get offended, just let me know and I’ll add you in later.

Let’s see, that night a had around 3 vodka and Vs, a sip of peppermint vodka (that stuff is hideously vile, transmission fluid would be better) and of course a Jager Bomb.
Not exactly a heavy night of drinking, but then I don’t usually touch alcohol.

A good night indeed.
Not to mention it was fun watching the normals start to walk in to the bar (270 Russell Street, So Bar, go there) and then walk out when they realised the roleplaying/lanning/channing crowd alongside the metal backing tracks.

There was also fire.

Of course I only got around 3 hours sleep that night as brutalis crashed at my house on the spare bed before wanting to try and get to his fiance’s place by 11… then of course I went to help run my Mage: The Awakening game at the same bar that evening, before heading to the Requiem game before piking out.

I crashed early that night due to a headache and got around 12 hours sleep prior to packing my gear on sunday morning and driving to south gippsland for a lan.

I’m not really sure what the lan was called, other than it was in Leongatha with a bunch of people I haven’t really seen in years, but it was awesome.

I will expand further on things when I need to, but that’s good coverage methinks.

Also R4N is good at spilling drinks over everybody, and Wolfmother is good at not holding his alcohol within himself.

Well as posted previously, tonight was Beerkips night. I arrived there later than intended as I need

Well as posted previously, tonight was Beerkips night.

I arrived there later than intended as I need to take the rubbish out, then go and buy some basic consumables (you cannot have sammages without bread.)

So I got there after 8, now this may not seem all that late to you, but it’s later than I planned as I walked all the way from Richmond Station to the base of Eureka Tower.

Why did I walk all that distance, you ask.
The answer is simple, emos. Or rather one particular ex-emo who decided that playing Chicken with trains was a really good idea.
Protip: When a large hunk of mainly metal is heading towards you at around 100k/h, move to the side. The Train always wins.

Official reasoning for the delay for Defective Signals, and it was even suggested by the train-driver to catch a tram the rest of the way.

What a brilliant idea this was. Except the number of people who decided to follow his advice. Packed trams are not fun for someone who doesn’t like being around people to that level.
Trams obviously weren’t an option.

Unlike some people, however, I chose not to walk along the tram-lines off into the city.
Instead I decided to cross the river and follow it to my destination, also on that side of the river.

Things I learned on my journey: People like wearing Essendon football tops. The river curves multiple ways. People who watch Korn in concert all look the same. And Templestowe is around 43 kilometres from the Arts Centre.

Eventually I got to my destination, there I found the following: R4N, Zardoz, Wolfmother, Sando and Deadeye.
There may have been some others but it’s not important (if you feel offended I missed you from this initial list, harass me on IRC or something and I will add you.

Later on we got Hider and his furfag friends (yes, they are furries, and furries are bad, but not as bad as plushies, as at least furs aren’t plush toys), Miniwalks, Zwan, Ithuriel and Spectre (again if I missed you out, tell me.)

Many shenanigans were had and talked about and such serious topics as these:
If you mix beer with anti-beer you get fire, and then ninjas can’t catch you as you’re on fire.
Is the original Castle Wolfenstein 8 bit or not?
You just lost the game.
Rick Astley
Tone-deaf karaoke.
Chocolat beer.
Why won’t TC learn that he can’t win if he keeps antagonising Miniwalks.
Etc.

Eventually everyone left except Zardoz, Ithuriel and myself.
Around that time my good friend z_brutalis and his girlfriend showed up, it has been her birthday and I finally got to meet the girl who’d made him her bitch.

Last drinks were called and we decided to relocate towards the food on Swanston street.

On the way, just outside the beer cafe, z_brutalis proposed to his girlfriend, and she said yes, levelling up to being his fiancé.

We made our way along the river to where we could ascend to street-level and discovered something amazing: there are real live fish surviving in the Yarra!

Eventually we made our way to where we could obtain biomass, and the newly engaged z_brutalis offered to drive me home, rather than me catch the Niterider.
Thus I spent some more time hanging out with the two engaged youngsters.

You have not experienced anything as frightening as being in a car that decides to keep pace with 4 other P-platers at speed… I just don’t trust what other drivers will do.

Eventually we made it back to my place, chatted for awhile, and they left off to their next destination, and I came in here, and well started blogging this.

There will be moar beerkips in future.

And congratulations to you two, you know who you are.

Well tonight I did something different, rather than staying at home watching anime and playing video

Well tonight I did something different, rather than staying at home watching anime and playing video-games, or hanging out with a cool Cranbourne bird, I decided to mix things up a little.

I decided to go to my first Respawn Drinks Night, aka Beerkips, or Moar.

Now my first challenge was simple, locate the Eureka Tower. Not as easy as it might seem.
You see I have an unusual form of domestic blindness, unless I’m specifically looking for something and have it pointed out to me such as on a map or with pictures, I’ll just totally over-look things.
Such was the case with the Eureka Tower.

I’ve passed by it many times, yet until tonight had never seen it, despite it towering over it’s nearest opposition in a manner that’s hard to miss, yet miss it I did.

So I googled and so on and got pictures and planned out my route.

Next task was simple, food.
I chose the lazy but smart option: I called the local Fish & Chippery and placed an order of Flake for me to pick up on the way to the station.

Not only did I time it well, I timed it excellently, arriving at the station at roughly 1 minute remaining.

The trip into the city was uneventful.

Eventually I got into the city, stopped off for some cash at flinders and elizabeth, then proceeded through the underpass, across a bridge and around some corners to the base of Eureka Tower.
The Belgian Beer Cafe was right in front of me and was indeed my destination.

Upon arriving I was spotted by one Tankii, who waved quite emphatically, drawing my attention to the motley crew of Respawn admins, regulars, and some people I’d never seen before.

There were many shenanigans, what with the size of Zardoz lenses, Spiteful’s body armour, Sando’s being a Genuine Asian Male, and R4N’s contagious state of being.

A lot of photos were taken, a lot of beer consumed, and the one known as Deadeye drank what he called a Period, it was red with cranberry, and he’d been assured it’d help with it’s namesake.

There was much rickrolling to be had, with R4N’s phone being hijacked.

There were some card-games where Sando, Spiteful, some guy who compared a drink of tasting like anus, and myself abducting cards… many lulz indeed.

Eventually though we got to the 1am mark, were booted out passively and started going our separate ways.
Some caught taxis, the rest of us journeyed to the Swanston KFC for food, where upon I opted out along with Spiteful and we caught our respective taxis.

Nightrider trips don’t change much, though there were a couple of german girls opposite me.
Which leads me to here, where I’m home typing a blog entry.

There will be photos of beerkips no doubt online soon enough and I shall link to them.

But in future, we need more for the beerkips, because moar!

I go to bed now.

AmK.

What FUMM is, is an elite group of gamers who just like ridiculing the serious nature of clans and guilds.

We play Naval Combat and we pwn at it.

Some more member would be handy so as to pwn more.

You’ll also need to sign up to xfire to make good use of this, but it’s worth it.

So go to FUMM and sign up or something.

We also have need for a picture of some FUMM as a logo, if you could help us out that’d be just swell.

Oh and come to Respawn v7 next month for some Naval Combat shenanigans!

[edit] Also Dongs! [/edit]

[response] Zardoz> dongs?! !HWHEREH!?!?!?! OH SHIT NO [/response] FTW!

Well it’s been quite an interesting past months indeed, so much that I was too lazy for this, even on those days I was being extra lazy.

Anyway, GuildWars: Eye of the North was released, and it is indeed grand. I even purchased the GotY upgrade thingy for the core game, granting me a heap of pointless weapons, just ’cause I could.

I have a pre-paid visa now, it lets me buy things without letting people leach all my money (well not all of it).

I moved from my place up in Coburg down to share a flat with my dad in Oakleigh. This place is cool in the summer due to awesome brick walls, you shall worship them now.

My car is fully functional and people have been taking a lot of advantage of that. But no more, you want me to drive you somewhere you hand over petrol money up front. That’s fair.

Hellgate: London was released here on the 30th of October. I have been playing a lot of it and enjoying it, so much so that I shelled out the clams required to become a Founder, which allows me to be an elitist prick and lord it over everyone.
Fear my lifetime subscription!

Just recently we hosted the January Premium Weekend for the Camarilla, it went well, no PCs died as a result of my actions and everyone seemed satisfied with it.

I suppose I should post more, but well I want to play some more Hellgate. I mean Stonehenge just got released for it

Just two weekends past, Respawn v6 was held up at Bundoora. Now if I was ignorant of how much gamers like porn, I wasn’t afterwards. I must have uploaded something like 50 or so gigs of straight porn.
I wasn’t advertising or anything, people just like porn.

I also got to play some Naval Combat with my new clan/cult, FUMM, AKA Fucked Up Monkey Meat.
So far this only involves my previous housemate Vortex Vandle, but we managed to scrounge up a couple of randoms so we could stick it to the admins. Due to rules changing and not being clear and whatnot, things didn’t really go anywhere. But we so pwned them good.

Vortex also liked bread.

So until later, when I might even be wearing pants, adios!
