December 22, 2009 at 11:00am – 12:30pm PST

Securing REST-Based Services with Access Control Service

Presenter: Michele Leroux Bustamante

Abstract: The Access Control Service (ACS), part of Windows Azure platform AppFabric, makes it easy to secure REST-based services using a simple set of standard protocols. In addition to enabling secure calls to REST-based services from any client, the ACS uniquely makes it possible to secure calls from client-side script, and enables federation scenarios with REST-based services. This webcast will provide a tour of ACS features and demonstrate scenarios where the ACS can be employed to secure REST-based WCF services and other web resources. You’ll learn how to configure ACS, learn how to request a token from the ACS, and learn how applications and services can authorize access based on the ACS token.

Text: Matthew 11:28-29
28 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. NKJV

Are you heavy laden? Are the burdens you carry ready to crush you? I know many people feeling overwhelmed these days. They carry a burden for their children. They are weighed down with finances. They are discouraged searching for work. They are paralyzed how to move forward in business. They are battling cancer or other life threatening diseases. Their marriages are crumbling. Pastors are burned out by the very ministry that should bring life. People are stressed out, over worked, under paid, crushed by debt, and discouraged by the future.

Jesus said, “Come to Me. I will give you rest.” If we are to find rest in Jesus, we must first come to Him. Seems simple, yet many of us resist. Others label us weak and dependent if we lean upon Jesus. The invitation is open to all. “Come and find rest.” When we come, Jesus instructs us to take His yoke upon us. A yoke makes us walk in step with Him, not ahead or behind. We abide with Him. His Spirit lives in our souls. And when His Spirit enters our souls, He calms the waters. He creates an eye in the midst of the storm, a place of peace. Jesus teaches us how to dance in the rain rather than worry about the flood. He instructs us how carry one another’s burden, and thus fulfill His law for us.

Thought for the Day – Find rest for you soul in the yoke of Jesus. If you are carrying a burden, allow Jesus and His followers to help share the load.

Hermann Nitsch, Viennese Actionist and founder of the Theater of Orgies and Mysteries, was recently featured in the book Blood Orgies: Hermann Nitsch in America. I got to take a look at the book and watch some videos of his performances and became really excited about his work. These videos were posted by Incubate, a showcase of independant artists and performers in Tilburg, Holland, and show an “action” from 1982. I strongly recommend viewing these full-screen. This passage from the Saatchi Gallery website gives a good, concise summary of Hermann Nitsch’s work:

Hailed by many as the Pope of Viennese ‘Aktionism’, Hermann Nitsch, together with Günter Brus, Otto Mühl, and Rudolf Schwartzkogler, reformed the face of sixties art, shunning the illusionary confines of traditional painting and sculpture, reinventing an art that exists in real, corporeal, and violent terms.

Hermann Nitsch was celebrated and reviled in equal measure as he took the semblance of a pagan ceremony and incorporated robed processions, symbolic crucifixion, drunken excess, nudity, animal sacrifice, the drinking of blood, and the ritualistic incorporation of viscera and entrails. Even today, his audiences aren’t mere visitors, but active participants in his artistic liturgies.

This Wednesday is the first day of Thanksgiving break. Outside my window and across the street, small and swift flakes of snow descend upon a mostly vacated college campus.

Most students’ plans for break involve going home and seeing family. Mine do as well, even though home is four blocks away and fifteen minutes away for my wife and I. However, most of my time is scheduled for completing school work, papers.

I enjoy writing and researching papers. I hate picking paper topics. It is a bit like picking a voice you would like to invite into your mind for the next few months, and, occasionally, the proceeding years. If it did not feel so false, I would say it is like picking a lover. Some of these voices have been welcome. I am ashamed of many.

Like (just) a few other students I know, about this time I start drawing up a reading list for the Christmas break. I have not yet fully read any of the lists I have ever drawn up, but it does not seem to discourage me from trying.

One of the reading goals is to finish a socio-rhetorical study on the epistles Paul wrote from prison. Another goal is to read through the gospels. This is interesting as far as goals go. I have discovered that when I approach reading the gospels like this, I read them as a reflection on my education. They punctuate all my learning, so that the effects of the last year, semester, or quarter of college become obvious when I consider my current reading against my last reading. After all the exams and testing, I like to perform my own.

Luke is the only character in the entire trilogy to undergo significant change.

„Street Credibility“?

Its time to release Restfulie Java, offering the same power encountered in its ruby release, through

Its time to release Restfulie Java, offering the same power encountered in its ruby release, through the use of dynamic bytecode generation and request interception using VRaptor.

Serialization framework

Restfulie adopts XStream by default. Its simple usage and configuration gets even easier due to vraptor’s serialization extension built upon XStream – but it allows the usage of other serializers.

The following code will serialize the order object including its children items (much similar to rails to_xml only option):

serializer.from(order).include("items").serialize();

Connected: Hypermedia content creation

In order to guide the client from one application state to another, the server needs to create and dispatch links that can be interpreted by the client machine, thus the need for generating hypermedia aware serialization tools and consumer apis.

Its the basic usage of the web in a software-to-software communication level.

Pretty much like Restfulie’s ruby implementation, by implementing the getFollowingTransitions method, restfulie will serialize your
resource, generating its representation with hypermedia links:

public List getFollowingTransitions(Restfulie control) {
  if (status.equals("unpaid")) {
    control.transition(OrderingController.class).cancel(this);
    control.transition(OrderingController.class).pay(this,null);
  }
  if(status.equals("paid")) {
    control.transition(OrderingController.class).retrieve(this);
  }
  return control.getTransitions();
}

Controller interception

Restfulie for Java goes further, intercepting transition invocations and checking for its status. The following example will only be executed if order is in a valid state for paying:

@Post @Path("/order/{order.id}/pay")
@Consumes("application/xml")
@Transition
public void pay(Order order, Payment payment) {
	order = database.getOrder(order.getId());
	order.pay(payment);
	result.use(xml()).from(order.getReceipt()).serialize();
}

Why?

Restfulie does not provide a bloated solution with huge api’s, trying to solve every other problem in the world. According to Richardson Maturity Model, systems are called RESTFul when they support this kind of state flow transition through hypermedia content contained within resources representations:

<order>
<product>basic rails course</product>
<product>RESTful training</product>
<atom:link rel="refresh" href="http://www.caelum.com.br/orders/1" xmlns:atom="http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom"/>
<atom:link rel="pay" href="http://www.caelum.com.br/orders/1/pay" xmlns:atom="http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom"/>
<atom:link rel="cancel" href="http://www.caelum.com.br/orders/1" xmlns:atom="http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom"/>
</order>

Stateless state

In order to profit even more from the web infrastructure, Restfulie for Java provides a (client state) stateless api.

Addressability

VRaptor’s controller api allows you to specify custom URI’s (and http verbs) to identify resources (and transitions) in your system.

Addressability + client cache stateless state server allows one to achieve REST’s idea on cache usage and its related layered systems advantages by allowing other layers to be added between the client and the server.

Unknown usage of my resources

Addressability + hypermedia content allows clients to use your resources pretty much in a way that was not tought of at first. Addresses (in our case, URI’s) can be passed around from one application to another, to and from a client’s internal database (as simple as a browser favorites, or google gears).

Building your system upon such basis, it become unaware of its resources usage (resource representation’s interpretation) patterns, allowing clients to create such previously unknown systems.

Less and simpler code, more results

Both on the server and client side, restfulie tries to achieve results based on conventions, therefore one can easily access its entry api to insert a resource in a system, i.e.:

  Movie solino = new Movie();
  resource("http://www.caelum.com.br/movies").include("metadata").post(solino);

And after creating a resource, one can actually navigate through your resource’s connections:

  Movie solino = resource("http://www.caelum.com.br/movies/solino").get();
  Comments comments = resource(solino).getTransition("comments").executeAndRetrieve();
  // print all comments

And navigate through your resource’s states:

  Comments comments = resource(solino).getTransition("comments").executeAndRetrieve();

  Comment comment = new Comment("nice movie on generations of immigrants and the hard times that they face when moving to a new place");
  resource(comments).getTransition("add").execute(comment);

A lot of good practices should be put into place in order to avoid creating Leonard Richardson’s defined REST-RPC alike systems.

Those good practices involve simple steps as avoiding anemic models on the client side . Restfulie+Vraptor already tries to avoid this on the server side andwe will discuss about such practices in following posts.

Download and example applications

Beginners could start by downloading restfulie’s client and server example application, ready to run in a eclipse wtp enviroment or pure eclipse installation.

Users are encouraged to use either the java or ruby mailing lists.

Since Restfulie was born in Ruby…

Since we released restfulie for ruby (on rails), which can be found at its github page, it was commented by Jim Webbers both on his blog and in person during QCon in San Francisco, where both him and Ian Robinson held a tutorial on restful systems and the web and will hold another round, more hands-on, at QCon London 2010.

Meanwhile, Restfulie was commented at ruby5’s podcast, commented here, at infoq, and in portuguese by Juliana and by Anderson Leite – a fellow Caelum developer.

As some comments were out about restfulie’s ruby implementation, restfulie: it’s more than easy.

A bit of a gap again since my last entry, but better late than never. Peace at last! It’s alm

A bit of a gap again since my last entry, but better late than never.

Peace at last! It’s almost the end of the fall semester of my Junior year, and Thanksgiving Break is finally here. It is a special holiday for me, not so much because of the “founding fathers” but rather because it is a reminder in my personal life of all the blessing I have received. And this Thanksgiving was no exception: having gone through arduous auditions, callbacks, and a 2+ week waiting process for the final cast lists, I have managed to be cast in two of my university’s departmental shows, which is a great honor indeed. I have two great parts in two great casts, and it really is a wonderful feeling to be rewarded with results like this in a business that constantly dismisses the talent of an individual.

And now I can enjoy this five day break, back at home with my family, and with a reassuring blanket of certainty keeping my ambitions safe (at least for the next few months, then who knows WHAT!) Actors live very transient lives, I realize. As a student, I am only just beginning to grasp how fleeting the nature of my work will be. Shows hold auditions, are cast, produced, and closed within the blink of an eye, and consequently it can be tempting for me to dismiss the lasting impact of my craft. But I suppose memories and emotions last longer than the final curtain, even if they are less tangible measures of enduring value.

For me Thanksgiving is a time for rest, but it is also a time for contemplation, as I look back on what I have in my life and where I plan to go from here. Sometimes I question my contribution to society – what good is acting for the world? One of my professors, thankfully, helped me to reexamine this notion. He talked to us in class about how we should never treat our chosen field in the arts and humanities as somehow inferior to the sciences or social sciences.

Yes, the world will always need scientists, doctors, engineers – creators of the practical. But to create art is of no less importance. Science should not be compared to art, and vice versa, because they are incomparable. After Yo-Yo Ma finishes a concert, one would not ask him ‘What’s the point of playing the cello?’ A better question might be, ‘What compels you to play the cello?’ or ‘When you play the cello, what do you feel?’ Art is not and should not be a product that can be bought and sold like a plastic toy off a production line. It does not necessarily feed us, clothe us, assist us in the practicalities of day to day life, or answer the deeper problems of our existence. But for anyone who has seen a beautiful painting, heard a moving composition, or experienced the enchantment of a sublime piece of literature or theatre, they know that art is an essential part of being human and enjoying our lives to the fullest.

And so I realize that art for art’s sake is more important that art for the sake of practicality. Art can be practical, but it must exist for itself first. We create art because we are inspired and we go to art because it inspires creation within us. Art can give us solutions, but more often I think it raises questions. And I am a firm believer that it is just as important to be able to send a man to the moon as it is to inspire the hearts of men and women through the mystery of art.

Happy Thanksgiving, Everyone! May it be Filled with Rest, Peace, and Good Art!

I know habits are not formed in a day, so I am going to get started on my 30 Days of Christmas experiment a little bit ahead of time. OK, Rejuvenation, Thankfulness, Rest – How do I make those things a real part of my life? OK – Three things I am thankful for TODAY – my sanity, my health, my husband. I feel a little better just having written that.

OK, what else can I do? I have to bring an appetizer to my mother’s for Thanksgiving, so I am going to turn it into an adventure. Instead of going shopping for the ingredients at the local grocer, I am going to plan a trip my food mecca – Wegmans, after work. I am going to take my time, and buy a treat for myself while I am at it. Ooo. I better pick up ingredients for dinner while I am there. But it is still going to be an ADVENTURE!!! Not just an errand. Keep you posted.
