Yes, I’m very thankful for the (relative) good health and happiness of my family and friends, for the joy my dog brings us every day, for my recently rediscovered passion for taking pictures, and for my new hairdresser who, on only our second meeting, gave me the names and numbers of two docs who did her facial peels, restylane, botox, and other great stuff. Yippeee!! That stuff is gold!

An online blogger wrote about a new trend in skin care from the UK-Placenta Facials. According to the entry the placenta provides iron, nutrients, and fights aging. The validity of these claims is unknown-stranger things have worked but for those looking to have younger, smoother skin Dr. Brenman offers a more full proof solution.

Dr. Brenman suggest filler such as Botox, Restalyne,Juvederm,Radiesse, or Sculptra for patients looking to smooth fine lines and wrinkles for up to six months. There is no intensive surgery, downtime or discomfort. Fillers are a great way to get results quickly without being subjected to the new of passing facial fads. Dr. Brenman also recommends combining fillers with medical grade skin care products and facials for consistently beautiful and blemish free skin.

Dr Brenman is careful to remind patients that these injection are not permanent. They will provide modest correction; however, it will never be comparable to a face lift. First time Botox patients need to be aware that it can take up to a week before the results of Botox take effect. Over time Botox will last longer but patients should plan for another injection in about three months if it is their first time.

Restylane is a natural facelift treatment that has been used by millions of women worldwide to get a more youthful appearance.

Restylane is a great alternative to Botox or plastic surgery is natural and safe. Let’s look at why Restylane is becoming more popular than ever.

The Treatment

Restylane is a gel made from hyaluronic acid (HA)

This water acting substance is present in everyone’s skin already and the treatment simply boosts the moisturizing affect.

So, it’s natural and safe and this is hugely appealing to most women.

When injected into the skin it is known as SubQ and moisturises the skin from the inside

It is used to soften lines and wrinkles and is injected into any areas that need improvement.

It can be used on the skin but is also frequently injected into the lip areas as well to plump them up, in this form is known as Restylane Lipp.

Finally it can be used on the cheekbones, where it is called SUBQ.

It is a very flexible treatment and adds volume to the face to soften lines, wrinkles or stress an area i.e plumping up the lips.

How long does it last?

This all depends on each individual.

How much is injected, how much that area of the face moves and the person’s genetic makeup.

For example, a cheek treatment will tend to last a year or more, mouth lines around six months and the lips may be just a few months.

In addition to the above we are all unique and we all break down hyaluronic acid at different rates so every case is different.

Why use it?

Unlike Botox and other treatments, it is totally natural with no side effects.

It simply boosts the amount of hyaluronic acid in the skin.

Because its natural you look natural (this cannot be said for botox or many facelifts) you can roll back the years, look beautiful and not worry that you will suffer in anyway from side effects.

Just like treatments like Mestotherapy the attraction of Restylane is it allows you to look younger in a totally natural way.

Ok it doesn’t last for ever but regular treatments will keep you looking young and with sessions at around $700.00 its affordable and a great way to look better.

If you’ve been looking into collagen treatments or Botox to help reduce the fine lines that ar

If you’ve been looking into collagen treatments or Botox to help reduce the fine lines that are appearing near your eyes or lips, there’s another treatment that is providing positive results.

Restylane was approved by the FDA in December 2003, and has since been used in more than 1.5 million treatments worldwide. Restylane is a cosmetic dermal filler made of a crystal clear gel called Non-Animal Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid, or NASHA. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that already exists in the human body, and can be used to provide volume to the skin.

How does Restylane work?
Restylane is applied in a similar manner to other non-surgical cosmetic procedures, and is injected into the area of choice. When it is injected into the lip, wrinkle or fold, it works together with the body’s own hyaluronic acid, and joins forces to create volume, giving a more youthful and healthy appearance.

What type of results can I expect?
Just like other forms of injectables, Restylane will have an immediate affect. It also has long-term temporary results, and can last anywhere from 6 to 12 months. The results will vary, depending on your lifestyle, age, and skin factors.

What are the side effects?
One of the reasons Restylane is growing in popularity is because of its safety. Since hyaluronic acid is naturally present in the body, the skin and body do no react to the material. In fact, very few reactions have occurred in people electing this product. The reported reactions do include temporary redness, bruising, swelling, itching or tenderness, and may last anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks. This makes Restylane very appealing and a convenient solution for reducing fine lines and wrinkles that appear on the face and neck.

What is the recovery time?
Restylane injections can be administered anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour or more, depending on how many areas will be injected. Immediately after the treatment you may experience slight swelling, tenderness or redness, but you should easily be able to return to your normal routine.

As a precaution, you should also avoid alcohol and exercise for six to ten hours following the procedure, and avoid sunbathing or cold weather activities until all redness and swelling disappears.

What do I need to do before a Restylane treatment?
The best part of this procedure is it requires no pre-testing. Because hyaluronic acid is present in the human body, there is no need for skin tests to determine allergic reactions.

Who is the ideal candidate for Restylane treatment?
Restylane is most effective in correcting wrinkles and folds around the nose, lips, eyes and cheeks. It also provides natural fullness to the lips when used for lip augmentation. The ideal candidate is a person who is looking for minor correction, and is aware that periodic treatments are required to retain the necessary results.

Professional Laser Hair Removal For Men And Women

Most Laser Hair Removal websites have not updated their sites with current laser hair removal information and technology and do not reflect the care provided by true trained laser hair professionals that ensure effective results. I have found some hair removal websites so out dated the information listed is as much as 10 years old. This is unacceptable not only to the serious permanent hair removal professionals but should also be unacceptable to you as a consumer. It is with this in mind that the Laser Hair Removal information you find on this website will be up to date, accurate and informative. While hair removal by laser has been in existence since the late 1990’s, it is still a relatively up and coming procedure. Laser hair removal consumers have many concerns including, typical cost of laser hair removal, seeing before and after shots of laser hair removal pictures and the risks of laser hair removal – including the side effects of laser hair removal procedures. The average cost of laser hair removal and overall laser hair removal dangers vary from spas to dermatologist, general medical practioners and even chiropractors who are attempting laser procedures with very little training. In some cases the only training they receive is from the sales person selling them the equipment. It is important as a consumer to ask questions about the type of laser hair removal systems they use as well as their training and experience using them. These are the factors that will determine the successfulness in having laser treatments to remove your unwanted hair problems.

You should be aware many of the spas and dermatologists in Tampa, St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Palm Harbor, New Port Richey and other communities in the Tampa Bay area offer laser hair removal as a service but require you to purchase a package deal or hold you under contracts to return for other services you may not need or be interested in. This is generally the rule of thumb for these types of institutions but it is not necessary. I do not, nor will I ever, require my clients to purchase contract services or pressure sale them on services they do not need or want.

I am a student of art. Hence I have always been intrigued by the concept of Aesthetics – what is beauty? How is it defined? Understanding the secular views of beauty will help me understand the cultural specifics and interpretations which I can apply to my design and artistic sensibilities.

When omy.sg organised the blogger event, I jumped at the opportunity to learn more about plastic surgery. Omy.sg (online mobile for the young) is an interactive web portal which develops bilingual and current content for the web savvy crowd (omy.sg, 2009).

The blogger event was held yesterday, 13 November 2009, at Novena Medical Centre. The speakers were: Dr Moon Hyoung Jin and Dr Low Chai Ling. Based on the information given at the blogger event, Dr Moon is one of Korea’s leading maxillofacial surgeons, while Dr Low is the founder and Medical Director of The Sloane Clinic.

The event focused on the product Restylane, a hyaluronic acid that is used as facial dermal filler to smooth the facial wrinkles. The purpose of the seminar is to educate and raise awareness regarding the use of Restylane. The fact that two renowned doctors in Korea and Singapore are endorsing the product adds to its credibility.

—

Based on my media kit, I summarized the following:

Restylane is:

Plant based chemical

Made of hyaluronic acid that is found naturally in the human body

Crystal clear gel that is injected into the skin to create volume to a sunken face

Used for filling out wrinkles and lines, lips, facial contouring and rejuvenation of the skin.

Has over 40 clinical studies and over 10 million treatments in 70 countries to prove its safety

Has immediate results

Leading brand within its category in the global beauty market

Developed using Q-Med’s patented NASHA ™ technology

—

Dr Moon presented first. He shared his survey findings about the acceptance of cosmetics surgery among Koreans and the reasons.

As one of the invited bloggers to this exclusive event, I was given plenty of resource information to write about it.

Here are some of the statistics from the media kit provided: (Q-Med, 2009)

Koreans are spending an average of USD 3,000 on cosmetic surgery.

Of the 232 Korean women surveyed, 98.5% of them, between the ages of 20 to 30, desire to have cosmetic surgery and 58.2% of them had already done so.

There is a significant increase from the survey conducted in 2003.

Reasons for drastic change in acceptance of cosmetic surgery:

Many celebrities has openly admitted to having undergone cosmetic surgery.

In Korea, increasing competition among doctors resulted in an abundant availability of high standards and professional cosmetic services.

There is a general perception among Koreans that external beauty is an important factor for success.

People are less shy about telling others they have undergone treatments.

Plastic surgery and facial enhancements are losing its stigma as society is more culturally accepting of such medical procedures. The media and celebrities played a role in popularizing these beauty makeovers.

I was not surprised by the results as Korea is famed for its “plastic beauties” and it is one of the leading countries in aesthetic medical services (Sankaku Complex, 2009). In fact, I was intrigued to research regarding this trend.

Genetically, the Koreans are related to the Mongols who once ruled the Central Asian steppes (Fairclough, 2005). Hence, it is common for most ethnic Koreans to have distinctive single eyelids which make their eye appear smaller, more prominent noses and fairer skin than other Asians (Fairclough, 2005).

Since the end of the Cold War, the western idea of female beauty has a strong influence on South Korea. The Korean ideal is a a relatively small, oval face with a high-bridged nose and large eyes with Western-style eyelids (Fairclough, 2005). These features are not inherent in the Korean’s physical appearance and is achievable only through plastic surgery.

In a collective society like Korea, the desire to conform and fit the societal definition of beauty may have fanned this spiraling phenomenon in pursuit of the prized “Eurasian” look (King, 2005).

—

The next speaker, Dr Low, began by defining the ideal beauty that is based on the Golden Ratio, 1:1.618. As we age, our face will shift further away from the golden ratio; we may have problems of pigmentations, shallow skin, wrinkles, and etc. Fillers are used to restore volume, balance and symmetry to the face and augment certain facial features that are characteristics of youth.

Dr Low also talked about the trends and demand for facial treatments in Singapore; which was different from that of Korea. According to her (Q-Med, 2009), Singaporeans are more restrained – most tend to be private about their treatments and experiences. However, it is an “open secret” as more Singaporeans are seeking such medical procedures to enhance their looks.

She revealed that popular procedures are generally those with low downtime. This includes laser and light therapies, botox and filler injections. This is understandable as these are non-surgical and non-invasive medical procedures; minimizing the occurrence of side effects. After all, most people want subtle changes to enhance their appearance; not drastically change to assume another identity.

—

During this blogger event, I witnessed the doctor demonstrate the use of Restylane on a patient. The patient looked sad and tired as she has deep nasolabial folds – lines that run from the corner of the nose to the corner of the mouth. The doctor injected Restylane to one side of her cheek to plump out the lines. He then massaged some cream that has anti-bruising properties. I did not get to watch the whole treatment to completion as the room was small and another group of people was coming in. But nonetheless, I thought that it was a fascinating process.

—

We were given the opportunity to ask questions during the FAQ session. I was curious about the difference between Botox and Restylane. Dr Moon replied, “Both chemicals are aesthetic injections with different properties to achieve the anti-aging effect. Botox (an allergen) is a toxin that is used to relax the muscle, while Restylane (filler) is used to add volume to the face. The effects of both treatments are temporary.”

I also asked about the price of the treatment and how long the effects of the Restylane treatment last. According to Dr Moon, the average cost is USD $600 per sitting, and it could last up to 18 months. He further explains that the non-permanence of the chemical is an advantage to achieving a more natural look, as the face is constantly evolving.

The event concluded.

—

Overall, I think that the marketing effort by Q-Med to promote its facial dermal filler is quite effective – they educate, raise awareness and generate interest – through independent third parties like me. There are several bloggers who also attended the event and will probably write about it. This creates several personal accounts and opinions from different perspectives that will serve to provide web users with alternative sources of information. However, it would be better if the sides effects of Restylane treatment is addressed in the presentation.

If you have been considering breast implants you may not have to go under the knife just yet because botox might just be what you need. Cosmetic surgeon Miami expert is encouraging patients to try Botox as a breast enhancement procedure. Botox Miami specialist says that the injections can help improve the contours of the upper chest and help push out certain muscles near the shoulder blades by freezing them in place. This helps improve posture and enhances the breasts for a more balance look. According to Restylane Aventura facial fillers expert, botox breast augmentation will only work for women with small breasts. The procedure will last around 3 to 5 months as the upper chest muscles will start to relax and the breast size will go back to its natural size. Although botox injections do not give a permanent solution, they are perfect for women who aren’t comfortable with breast augmentation Aventura surgery but would like to have bigger breasts.

Since I have been receiving Botox® Cosmetic injections for about 4 years and have been thrilled with

Since I have been receiving Botox® Cosmetic injections for about 4 years and have been thrilled with the results each time, I’m still surprised when people ask me, “Is Botox safe?” but…I suppose for those who are considering their first Botox treatment, there is still a lot of fear, confusion and trepidation. So, I thought it might be a great topic to write about for those considering Botox for the very first time. So….here we go!

First of all, BOTOX® and BOTOX® Cosmetic are the same product simply marketed to consumers through different marketing channels of Allergan, the parent company that manufactures Botox. So, what IS Botox?

BOTOX® Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA) for injection, is a sterile, vacuum-dried purified
botulinum toxin type A, produced from fermentation of Hall strain Clostridium botulinum type A grown in a medium containing casein hydrolysate, glucose, and yeast extract, intended for intramuscular use. It is purified from the culture solution by dialysis and a series of acid precipitations to a complex consisting of the neurotoxin, and several accessory proteins. The
complex is dissolved in sterile sodium chloride solution containing Albumin Human and is sterile filtered (0.2 microns) prior to filling and vacuum-drying. All this very technical info can be found on the Allergan website at www.botoxcosmetic.com .

How does it work?
Botox is mixed (or diluted) with saline and then injected into the belly of the muscle. Once injected it rests on the muscle receptor and blocks the impulse to contract the muscle sent by the brain. The inhibition of the muscle contraction is what causes the lines and wrinkles to soften and smooth out over time. It can take up to 14 days for botox to take full affect, while most people see results in 5-10 days and the results last up to 3 months. Although some individuals may metabolize the product faster thus the result does not last as long and others may metabolize is slower, prolonging their result beyond the typical 3 months.

Patient squinting before Botox injections

Patient squinting after Botox injections (14 days post injections)

other questions often asked include:
1. Does it hurt?
Not really. If you feel anything, you may feel a slight sting at the injection site, but it lasts only a few seconds. If you are very concerned about pain, ask your physician to apply a topical numbing el for 15-20 minutes prior to your treatment.

2. If I do it once and I don’t do it again, will I look MORE wrinkles than before I started?
NO! Absolutely not. Actually, you will only look better and eventually go back to the way you looked before. Understanding how wrinkles are formed and how Botox helps improve wrinkles is important. Wrinkles between the eyes, crows feet, forehead and around the mouth are caused by repeated muscle contractions. So, by injecting Botox and inhibiting or stopping these contractions all together, the treated areas have a chance to relax and smooth out.So, while Botox is in effect the tissue in the treated areas is not contracting and therefore not contributing to the wrinkles and lines. If you decide not to repeat your Botox treatment (although I don’t know why you wouldn’t!) the previously treated area will stay smooth for some time and eventually once you make the expressions and contract the muscles again, the original lines and wrinkles will probably return as they were prior to the treatment.

3. Will I look scared or surprised all the time?
Well, that depends on the skill of the injector. You should look natural and relaxed. It is important to stress to the injector what result you are looking for so he or she can ensure you receive YOUR desired result.

4. How much is it?
Botox treatments can vary depending on geography and injector skill and experience. Most injectors charge per unit, and the unit cost varies anywhere between $12.00-$18.00/unit. Although I have heard of a few Plastic Surgeons charging $26./unit. You should plan to receive 25 units per area, so at an average of $14./unit, that’s about $350 per area.

Another practice is to charge a flat rate per area, and this can range from $250-$500/area. I prefer the per unit fee, as I want to know what I am receiving.

So, why the variance in pricing? There are many reasons, but primarily it is market demand and skill/education level of the injector. Physicans often charge slightly higher rates than PA’s or ARNP’s. Ask if there are any specials running and definitely ask for the Botox® Cosmetic Benefits Program. This program is offered directly from Allergan, the manufacturer of Botox (and Latisse) and they send you gifts and specials and great reminders, etc.

5. How do I choose an injector?
Do your research!!! Price alone should NOT be your deciding factor. Ask around to your friends and folks in the community. Injectors who are great, typically have great reputations and those who are not great, typically do NOT have great reputations. Ask the injector to map your face and explain to you exactly where they will inject and what result they expect to achieve. It is also ok to ask the injector how long they have been working with Botox and what areas they commonly treat. Advanced injectors are skilled at treating ALL facial areas including the mouth, under eye, jowls, frown lines, and the neck whereas those with basic skills may only inject the forehead and glabellar (between the eyebrows) areas.

6. How long does the procedure take?
The actual treatment is typically very quick 15 minutes or so. However, if it is your first visit to this injector, you will want to establish a rapport and ask him or her to map your face and discuss any questions you may have, so be sure to prepare yourself with questions and ASK them!

7. Is Botox safe?
YES, yes and YES! Botox has been used for 20+ years in medicine for treating migraines and muscle spasms. It was introduced cosmetically and approved by the FDA for cosmetic use in 1989 and 2003, although is used “off-label” frequently. Injecting Botox® Cosmetic anywhere other than the glabellar is considered off-label use. The following link outlines significant detail about Botox and is found on the FDA website. http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/drugsatfda_docs/label/2009/103000s5109s5210lbl.pdf

Please send me questions you may have regarding Botox or other injectable treatments…soon I will be covering fillers of all kinds including, Restylane, Perlane, Juvederm, Juvederm Ultra, Evolence, Radiesse, Sculptra and more.

If you have been looking for permanent hair removal, laser hair removal may sound very enticing. How

If you have been looking for permanent hair removal, laser hair removal may sound very enticing. However, although you’ve probably seen this technology heavily advertised, little is known about how it works. Here are some things you should know before you decide whether or not laser hair removal is right for you.

1. What is laser hair removal? Laser hair removal is a procedure in which hair is removed from the body using a long pulse laser. Light at a specified wavelength is delivered from a handpiece into the skin. The laser targets dark material, which is usually the pigment in the hair. The laser then disables hairs that are in their growth cycle at the time of treatment. Because other hairs will enter their growth cycle at different times, several treatments are necessary for optimal results.

2. What are the benefits of laser hair removal? Many patients have experienced long-lasting hair removal or permanent hair reduction due to their treatments. Although laser hair removal can be very effective, you should expect some re-growth. However, many patients have indicated that hair regrowth is often lighter in color or finer in texture.

3. Who is a candidate for laser hair removal? Not everyone is an ideal candidate for laser hair removal. It works best on people with light skin and dark, coarse hair. However, if you do not have this exact skin type, dont give up hope. Visit a couple of clinics and see what they have to say. Technology is quickly advancing and many lasers are now able to work with a variety of skin types. For example, the Alexandrite long pulse and diode types of lasers work best on light-colored skin, while ND:YAG long pulse lasers work better on darker skin. It is best to consult a certified laser hair removal technician to see what options are available to you.

4. Is laser hair removal permanent? Many people think that laser hair removal is a permanent solution. However, this simply isnt true. Some re-growth is natural and expected. You shouldnt expect laser hair removal to remove every single hair from an area. However, it can make significant reductions. A set of at least 6-8 treatments is often necessary to achieve significant hair removal. Many factors come into play here, including the size of the area being treated, the texture of the hair, skin type, and the frequency of treatments. After your treatments, you will probably also want to do some touch-up treatments to maintain smooth skin.

5. Are the treatments painful? You will often find claims that laser hair removal is painless but this is not true. Laser hair removal is very tolerable, but not painless. Many people compare it to being snapped with a rubber band. Everyone has different pain tolerance, but generally laser hair removal is not much more painful than waxing. Its just different.

6. Is laser hair removal right for me? In order to make the best decision for you, it is important to get multiple opinions.

The best way to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment a medical center offers is by reading what people who have been treated there say. Rejuve is a leading cosmetic center of the Bay Area and reading what the patients have to say about it (http://www.rejuvemedical.com/testimonials.html) is enlightening.

From simple Botox to IPL laser treatment to Restylane to anti aging and nose treatments, and much more, people who have been to Rejuve have a great deal of praise for not only the effectiveness of the treatment they received, but for the courteous staff and the wonderful environment.

This is a filler update from the Fall AAFPRS meeting, where there was a big push from the new filler

This is a filler update from the Fall AAFPRS meeting, where there was a big push from the new fillers on the block. Though Sculptra has been around for years to treat facial wasting, it was recently FDA-approved for cosmetic use to treat “shallow to deep smile lines (nasolabial fold), contour deficiencies and other facial wrinkles.” However, many of us facial plastic surgeons have already been using it for years as “off label” for cosmetic treatment of the face.

Over the past decade, we have taken a new look at facial aging. Faces don’t just droop and get wrinkles, often they lose volume. Dr. Sydney Coleman was one of the first doctors to disseminate that concept, and treated facial volume loss with fat liposculpture, which was a powerful adjunct to treating facial aging. Some patients really don’t need facelifts, and others need both volume replacement and lifting. Until Sculptra – as well as some of the other longer lasting fillers such as Radiesse, Perlane and Juvederm Ultra Plus – fat was the best option. However, fat rejuvenation is a surgical procedure that comes with prolonged healing and downtime, and some patients only retain 60 to 80% of the injected fat on average, so results are often unpredictable. And to inject more fat requires another semi-major procedure. You might also be one of the rare patients in whom 100% of the fat lasts, resulting in an over-filled face.

Alternatively, Sculptra, a non-invasive injectable, can treat volume loss precisely and effectively in just two to three treatments… no operating room, sedation or significant recovery required.

Results typically last two or more years.

Why Sculptra instead of other fillers? This is really a choice to be decided upon between physician and patient. As I mentioned above, Sculptra may require two to three treatments a month apart, lasting an average of two years before it starts to slowly go away. No other fillers last as long. So, do you want to have this “in and out” treatment with little to no down time and maybe a tweak in one and two months, or get treatments every 6 to 9 months with other fillers, which can be costly over time. Though Sculptra is more expensive, it really doesn’t cost more than shorter-lasting fillers when amortized over two years.

To continue my summary of new innovations presented at the fall meeting of the AAFPRS in San Diego,

To continue my summary of new innovations presented at the fall meeting of the AAFPRS in San Diego, I am going to review the latest Hyaluronic Acid (HA) facial fillers. New fillers are continually being developed and released on the market. Which are good, which are not so good and which are going to fade away – that is fade from use not just fade from your face.

The fastest growing selection of facial fillers is the HA fillers. One of the first to be FDA approved and widely used was Restylane followed by Juvederm. Along with Restylane there is Perlane, a thicker version and Juvederm Ultra Plus; a thicker version of Juvederm. Historically, Captique and Hylaform were early contenders but these fell by the wayside as not measuring up to Restylane and Juvederm. New to the market is Hydrelle; the first HA to have local anesthetic right in the syringe. Many of us now combine HA with local anesthetic to reduce the discomfort on injection. This saves a step. However, will Hydrelle stand up as a filler? The presentation on new fillers compared Hydrelle to Captique, which really couldn’t hold a candle to Restylane or Juvederm.

An exciting new pair of HA fillers are Prevelle Silk and Prevelle Shape. These also have local anesthetic. According to the new technologies seminar, Prevelle Silk has the smallest HA particle size. This may work well for treating very fine lines in the skin, especially around the mouth. Right now, the HA options of Restylane and Juvederm can be used, but when injected too superficially, the clear gel may be visible as a bluish bump within the skin called the Tindal effect. A smaller particle should reduce this potential side effect. For really small, superficial lines, the best stuff out there right now is Cosmoderm, but there is a rumor going around that Cosmoderm and Cosmoplast might be dropped from production due to low sales from HA competition and high production costs. I will definitely try Prevelle Silk since it will fill a needed niche in facial fillers.

Next week I will expand on fillers (no pun intended) to discuss Evolence, Radiesse and Sculptra.
