Late Rafa Rocket gives MAD their first win of the season Anthony Mansell reporting from Carpentiere

Late Rafa Rocket gives MAD their first win of the season

Anthony Mansell reporting from Carpentiere

In the third game of the season, F.C MAD showed the progress of a team gelling to come out deserved winners against a threatening but vulnerable Chimind side. The pressure had been building after the disappointing loss last week but the team responded with a display of passing style and defensive discipline that made life difficult for their opponents.

The first half saw MAD control possession and dominate the midfield, creating a few good chances and restricting Chimind to attempts from range. An early strike from distance sailed inches past the post, but MAD responded with excellent movement in the midfield and testing the opposition keeper with shots from close range. The pressure finally told after a corner was not dealt with, leaving midfield general Rafaelle Spallone to tap home the opening goal to the delight of the FC MAD bench.

However, in the midst of the celebrations a speculative effort by a Chimind midfielder evaded everyone at the near post and the sides were immediately level. A blow to the ‘midriff’ of defender ‘Swiss’ Phil Lustenberger forced a change with captain Anthony ‘Giggsouch’ Mansell filling in in the defensive hole. The side overcame the twin setback though and looked in control at the half time whistle.

Changes at half time allowed for more pace in the midfield, and the effective use of the flanks allowed FC MAD to get in behind the defence numerous times without ever really threatening the goal. Strong play by striker Anthony Halley and excellent support by Graham Day and Heymi Bahar allowed for plenty of attacking threat, but the Chimind defence remained resolute.

Despite the array of options available to manager Anthony Mansell, the second half was a more disjointed affair and the midfield were increasingly stretched as tiredness set in across the team. It was going to take something special to settle the game and, with minutes remaining, Spallone received the ball out wide, jinked inside and shifted awkwardly on to his favored right foot, launching an unstoppable strike into the far right corner. It was a goal fully deserved by the resolute display of the MAD players, despite the lacklustre final 10 minutes. The performance of Halley up front, despite persistent foul play by a flummoxed Chimind defence, was indicative of the character the team has developed in the last three games.

Coach Mansinho attributed the win to a more fluid midfield and greater ball retention, whilst a resolute rearguard restricted Chimind to only two major opportunities in the second half, both blazed wide. Whilst there is room for improvement and the tactics have yet to be finalized, the signs from a cold thursday night at Carpentiere is that F.C MAD are a team high on confidence and will be causing concern to the other teams in the division.

As you may or may not know, I started my journalism studies this year. We had to write four articles

As you may or may not know, I started my journalism studies this year. We had to write four articles which have been assessed (and several essays as well), and as I have never in my life done anything similar to this, it was quite an experience.

The first one was an interview made in Princes Street Gardens so I grabbed my notebook and my pen and went for my ‘person hunt’. We had to find two persons, elderly or tourists. I decided that the best would be to find an elderly tourist And so I did. The first few people I asked said that they were not interested, they did not want to buy anything. Even the elderly people were not kind and this was a shock for me. Grandma and grandpa are kind… You know what I mean.

After walking my legs off, I finally found a gorgeous couple from Germany. The interview was exciting as I had no idea what to ask from them. Imagine: I had to write an article about a person’s life story… And I am not so good in preparing in advance, in fact, I do not believe you can prepare in advance for an interview if you do not know who the interviewee will be. Anyway, I knew what I wanted to know I just did not have enough experience (especially in English), to ask the proper questions. After a while I got the angle of the story and I was unstoppable. You can check the result here: http://viqe.wordpress.com/2009/10/20/43-year-old-love-story/ .

The second piece was an easier one for me: a profile of a journalist. I felt very lucky as I happen to know a Hungarian journalist (we went to the same University and had classes together), so I could do the interview in Hungarian and did not even have to struggle too much with the questions. We have known each other for three years now and I knew a lot of things about him. Thus, I could prepare my questions in advance as I almost knew his answers as well. This happened to be an hour-long interview which I really enjoyed translating into English. I would love to do this all my life. It was also very comfortable as I did the interview through Skype and I could look into my lecture notes to check if I’m doing my thing right. The outcome: http://viqe.wordpress.com/2009/11/27/a-true-story-of-success-–-csaba-balogh/ .

Our third article was a Parliament report. This was the hardest as I had to cope with the different accents of Mps and also with words I have never heard before. I did not know the politicians either, so I tried to guess their names from the vowels I heard. I was not sure if I could manage but I could even get some quotes. You can check my understanding of Scottish Parliament debate here: http://viqe.wordpress.com/2009/11/27/relief-from-aberdeen-to-inverness/ .

Our final task was a feature for BMI In-flight Magazine. We were asked to write something in connection with Edinburgh or Glasgow. As I work in a hotel restaurant this was not really difficult; I meet tourists every single day, I talk to them, I know why they choose certain restaurants, destinations so I decided to write about something in connection with restaurants. I called the head-chef of the four-star hotel, and we had a chat which I recorded. The result was a 1000-word article about the comfort of hotel restaurants: http://viqe.wordpress.com/2009/11/27/eating-in-out/ .

In the future I would like to make a few changes: I would like to be more prepared as luck will not always accompany me throughout my academic studies. I will also have to get used to the different accents here and this might improve by listening to the radio or going to council meetings…and if I read more newspaper my vocabulary will improve and I will also get to know how certain articles look like, what makes them interesting and what readers want.

Clearly, strategic planning is no panacea. Strategic planning is simply a set of concepts, procedure

Clearly, strategic planning is no panacea. Strategic planning is simply a set of concepts, procedures, and tools designed to help leaders, managers, and planners think and act strategically. Used in wise and skillful ways by a “coalition of the willing,” strategic planning can help organizations focus on producing effective decisions and actions that further the organization’s mission, meet in mandates, and satisfy key stakeholders. But strategic planning is not a substitute for strategic thinking and acting. Only caring and committed people can do that. And when used thoughtlessly, strategic planning can actually drive out precisely the kind of strategic thought and action it is supposed to promote.

Furthermore, strategic planning is not a substitute for leadership. There is simply no substitute for leadership when it comes to using strategic planning to enhance organizational performance. At least some key decision makers and process champions must be committed to the strategic planning process, or any attempts to use it are bound to fail.

In addition, strategic planning is not synonymous with creating an organizational strategy. Organizational strategies have numerous sources, both planned and unplanned. Strategic planning is likely to result in statement of organizational intentions, but what is realized in practice will be some combination of what is intended and what emerges along the way. Strategic planning can help organizations develop and implement effective strategies, but they should also remain open to unforeseen opportunities. Too much attention to strategic planning and excessive reverence for strategic plans can build organizations to other unplanned and unexpected—yet incredibly useful—sources of information, insight, and action.

The discipline necessary for strategic planning can be of two sorts. The first harkens back to Latin root of the word “discipline,” emphasizing instruction, training, education, and learning. The second embodies later interpretations of the word, emphasizing order, control, and punishment. Emphasis should be placed on education and learning, although there clearly are occasions when imposing order, taking control, and enforcing appropriate sanctions are appropriate. Certainly, key leaders, managers, and planners can best use strategic planning as an educational and learning tool, to help them figure out what is really important and what should be done about it. Sometimes this means following a particular sequence of steps and preparing formal strategic plans, but not necessarily. The ultimate goal of strategic planning should not be a rigid adherence to a particular process or an instance on the production of plans. Instead, strategic planning should promote wise strategic thought and action on behalf of an organization and its key stakeholders. What steps to follow, in what sequence, and whether or not to prepare formal plans are subsidiary concerns.

I have read that you can do application sharing in Skype and MS Messenger, what I didn’t know before actually after in computer science field for 10 years. I gave Skype a try and installed it. I havent tried MS Messenger yet.

Skype is doing the application sharing through the extra Unyte. First I had to create another account on Skype, install another copy of Windows XP in a virtual machine on my VMWare Server and install Skype also on the virtualized XP machine. I installed this extra and tried running it, but kept getting an error. It kept telling me to enable the firewall for SkypePM.exe to access the Internet. This however I later found out after searching the Internet for a solution that it had nothing to do with access to the Internet. I found out that actually its because I have to pay for this service. They could have made this more clear.

I now would install the Chisimba Realtime Tools and try the application sharing in Ubuntu Linux. I had a reply from David at UWC that the Realtime Tools actually support application sharing.

A makeshift F.C MAD team suffered a heavy defeat against the well organized Mossi Sal Rancore, showing pointedly the issues affecting the newly assembled squad. Defensive attitude, lack of precision in the midfield and a lack of spark were all factors in a dismal first half display where they were thoroughly outplayed.

After the break, there were marked improvements and periods of consistent pressure, but without securing the decisive breakthrough. They were made to pay for this when Mossi scored a third and fourth in quick succession, the MAD defence unable to prevent overlaps from the Mossi midfield. A late Ian Warthin consolation was not enough, and will act as a wake up call for the MAD boys as they prepare for the crucial game next week against Chimind.

Player/coach Anthony Mansell could not hide his disappointment at the final whistle, and will have plenty to think about in time for the next fixture

An organization will not begin the transformation until it is aware that the quality of the product

An organization will not begin the transformation until it is aware that the quality of the product or service must be improved. Awareness comes about when an organization loses market share or realizes that quality and productivity go hand in hand. It also occurs if TQM is mandated by the customer or if management realizes that TQM is a better way to run business and compete in domestic and world markets.

Automation or other productivity enhancements might not help a corporation if it is unable to market its product or service because the quality is poor. The Japanese learned this fact from practical experience. They could sell their products only at ridiculously low prices, and even then it was difficult to secure repeat sales. Until recently, corporations have not recognized the importance of quality. However, a new attitude has emerged—quality first among the equals of cost and service—the customer wants value.

Quality and productivity are not mutually exclusive. Improvements in quality can lead directly to increased productivity and other benefits. The improved quality results in improvement in productivity, capacity, and profit. Many quality improvement projects are achieved with the same workforce, same overhead, and no investment in new equipment.

More and more corporations are recognizing the importance and necessity of quality improvement if they are to survive domestic and world-wide competition. Quality improvement is not limited to the conformance of the product or service to specifications; it also involves the inherent quality in the design of the system. The prevention of the product, service, and process problems is a more desirable objective than taking corrective action after the product is manufactured or a service rendered.

TQM does not occur overnight; there are no quick remedies. It takes a long time to build the appropriate emphasis and techniques into the culture. Over-emphasis on short term results and profits must be set aside so long-term planning and constancy of purpose will prevail.
