Miss Universe 2012: Ms. USA grabs the Title

A few hours back was the coronation night of the most prestigious pageant on earth: Miss Universe 2012. Around 85 beauties from all over the world participated in the said event. Among the beauties, Ms. USA, Olivia Culpo grabbed the title. She is the 8th American beauty to hold such title.

Coming in 1st runner-up was The Philippines bet, Janine Tugonon. 2nd runner up was Ms. Venezuela, Irene Sofia Esser Quintero . 3rd runner up was Ms. Australia, Renae Ayris . And lastly the 4th runner up was Ms. Brazil, Gabriela Markus .

Hollie Cavanagh Goes Home On American Idol

With the coveted home town hero visit on the line, four became three tonight on the “American Idol” results show.

But before their fate was revealed the foursome kicked the show off with a snoozy version of “California Dreamin”” by the Mamas and Papas.

Then, we got down to business, or so we thought. First up, double P as Ryan said. Jimmy called Phillip’s performance the beginning of Phillip coming into his own. But Ryan didn’t reveal a thing. He told Phillip to return to “the couch,” but said, those are not the results. Which means what?

Next up was Hollie, who struggled on her second showing last night. Jimmy understood why the judges were okay with Hollie’s Journey showing, but he didn’t agree. And of her Bonnie Raitt performance, Jimmy said, “she hit the opera button” and “crashed and burned.” But still, the torture for us and them continued as she too was sent back to the couch.

Lucy got her Junior Cert. results yesterday, along with all the other teenagers who sat the exams in June. She did really well, especially as she was sick through half of them. We had to go to the school to pick them up and then we went to McDonald’s for breakfast

There was another girl there with her parents. Her mother was telling her how pleased she was with her results and then started banging her first on the table and shouted ‘Now concentrate on your Leaving Cert.’ Poor girl I felt really sorry for her. Some parents put way too much pressure on their children.

Just incase we hadn’t had enough calories in the morning we had booked a table at our favourite restaurant Yeats Tavern it was also an early birthday treat for Lucy as it’s her birthday on Monday.

Jono remembered his age card this time, so he got to have a Guinness (which he loves). The nicest part was yet to come. Lucy ordered fudge cake and look what the lovely people at the Yeats Tavern did:

It was a complete surprise and such a lovely gesture, Lucy was delighted.

NCAD Degree Show #1

The NCAD Degree show goes on til Sunday. Opening Hours are until 8pm this evening (Friday) and then 10-5 tomoro (Saturday) and 2-5 on Sunday. I have yet to see all of it, as I have mostly been invigilating the textiles section, but I can’t wait to see the rest and report back. Gonna keep it quick today, the challenge is “an outfit you wore to a special occasion”. Last Friday was the opening of the show/results night, which was special enough. I got a first in my thesis, which was on blogging, so I was really delighted with that, as there is so little academic research on fashion blogging and how it is tied into identity, DIY culture, and all sorts of other nerdy things that I can never get enough of. And so here is what I wore, what some of my friends wore, and also a bit of the exhibition itself. I settled on the dress I bought for my friend’s wedding back in February, and my trusty American Apparel sheer oversize blouse, and of course, the Kirkwoods….I’m going to have to stop wearing them so much! Happy Friday!!!

For American Idol finales, it’s usually about revealing who wins the whole thing. This season, it was more than that. The two-hour special was a healthy mix of has-been 70′s, 80′s and 90′s hit makers like The Bee Gees, Alice Cooper, Hall and Oates, Michael McDonald, Alanis Morissette, Christina Aguilera and Janet Jackson, and then there were skits and videos for judge Simon Cowell’s departure from the show. The accolades went on for a good hour and forty-five minutes, leaving the last fifteen minutes for Ryan Seacrest to declare Season 9′s American Idol.

The other intention of the show was to bid farewell to Cowell who will be leaving the show, and will be back next year with Fox to work on his new venture, X-Factor. Songs were sung (Dane Cook) and speeches were delivered (Paula Abdul), but no tears came out of it – from Simon, anyway. Although he did hug Seacrest on stage and said he was very ‘emotional’.

Then the results: 24-year-old paint salesman from Mount Prospect, Illinois Lee DeWyze takes the win. The initially awkward and shy performer could only say “Oh My God” so many times. At the start of the season, runner-up Crystal Bowersox was always sighted to win the competition, but I bet no one considered Lee. The results had only a 2% difference, a telling sign that voters were almost equally divided between the two contenders. And it’s a good sign. Vocally, Crystal has the edge, but I think Lee’s personal victory of conquering his doubts and being a huge improvement gave him more edge on winning fans. For the first time, America liked the underdog. Crystal, on the other hand admitted that she “knew Lee was going to win. I just had a feeling and I couldn’t be happier for him. Lee deserves every minute of this.“

So that’s a wrap for Idol this year. Here’s to hoping for a better, if not a fantastic, Season 10.

Aaron Kelly Goes Home, Unfortunately

Vote For The Worst messed things up again. Casey James should have gone home as he clearly disappointed last night. The judges said so as well. So along comes Vote For The Worst and gets Casey enough votes to stay in the competition and Aaron Kelly goes home. Very unfortunate indeed!

American Idol “wth” Results Night

I was surprised like hell! Last week’s Results Night is the crappiest night EVER of American Idol.

Really now?? That was my reaction after Alex Lambert and Lilly Scott got voted off from the hit reality show American Idol. As weak season as it may seem, I think it will be more boring after that results night - Wherein two of the best talents of Season 9 take their final songs on AI stage.

I don’t know what America wants to listen to, Lilly Scott said after Seacrest asked what she thinks about the results. I totally agree with her. Scott is a great talent, same as with Alex Lambert but still they got voted off from the show.

I personally like both of these contestants. They have a distinct sound, style and attitude, not like other *ehem* teeny guys and gals who managed to get into the Top 12. C’mon America, are you kidding me? Really? Seriously?

I know for a fact that Lambert has weak points, specially when he performed on AI stage the first time. God knows he was singing blankly and awkwardly. But he managed to redeem himself on the next episodes of the show. I admit, he is one of my favorites well, obviously. But not being biased or whatever, isn’t it he sound better than, at least, that teeny guy from Orlando or the re-entry guy? I don’t know. With that, One thing is for sure. He is really a great talent loss from AI competition.

On the other hand, Lilly Scott. She has a complete and solid right to feel disappointed after that results night. From the start of the competition, she has been doing great and confidently singing her heart out on every performance. I felt really terrible when Ryan Seacrest announced that the other teeny girl get into the Top 12, and not Lilly. I can’t really tell what made her out of the competition because she is one of the most consistent performer in AI. The vote turnout is simply unacceptable.

Well, results are results. I just wish AI would come up with a wild card entry. It is not mainly because I would want any of my favorites to get back into the show – It is more of making the competition more interesting. If that would happen, contestants will become more protective of their hard-earned spot in the said reality show, which could make them feel more competitive. Who knows, maybe this could be a way to see a spark of real talent from the Top 12 guys and girls of American Idol.

So we have our first two eliminees from American Idol. At least that twist wasn’t as bad as I imagined. But the producers should do their math – if the judges only have veto power until top 5, then they couldn’t have saved those AI contestants they quoted, ie. Daughtry. A quick search in Wikipedia told me that he got eliminated top 4 anyway…

Anyway, it’s good bye Jorge, who took it like a man. Puerto Rico, where were you? Hawaii managed to save two of their own for endless weeks, and you could not save Jorge for just one week?

I hope Jorge goes on to a singing career back in Puerto Rico (Hey, J Lo and Marc Anthony know who he is now!) or maybe he can go back to Law School and be a singing lawyer? Anyway, I wish him luck – he was sincere when he sang, had a better singing voice than the safe ones (I’m looking at you Anoop, Kris and Michael) and seemed to be a good guy.

As for the other eliminee, I never thought Jasmine deserved to be there anyway. Should’ve been Jessie.

Oh well.

One thing I liked about tonight though, Kelly Clarkson was rocking it! And I’m glad that they’re bringing back previous contestants each result night Good call, producers, for that one!

And The Results Are In...

Yeah, yeah, I did not worry to update on the ‘Girls – Top 12′ performance yesterday, but I must admit — they were boring. I am not sexist, or anything; but I did not feel the need. Anyway, tonight the results are in and two guys must hit the roads and two girls give back those outfits they have been renting. Predictions for taking the cake [going home] belong (by a mile) to Garret Haley, Jason Yeager/Luke Menard and for the girls… I ~~haven’t decided, but hopefully we will see who goes home tonight~~ think Amy Davis and that biker dude…oops, girl Amanda.Back to the actual show, Paula Abdul is now riding the co tails of Idol, shoot, it took her all these years because I know I would have been dropping videos every week if I was a judge on American Idol (that’s why they haven’t held auditions for judges yet). I think the video for “Dance Like There’s No Tomorrow” is fun and techno-pop edged, which is doing really well in the industry so Paula should secure herself with a Top 40 hit in decades if the promotion, slutation, marketing, and everything is well done. So the beautiful, black, bombshell (she was my favorite) Joanne Borgella is going home, but atleast she has her plus-size modeling contract to fall back on and I do wish her all the best in the future.
