We are asked frequently about the difference between the average high school “geek” that most computer consulting companies use and a professional IT person that Masley And Associates uses.

While it is true there are some very basic PC issues which both types of IT people could easily fix, there is a vast difference when it comes to support and more complex issues.

We only use the top Network Engineers and Network Administrators yet we offer them to our clients for the same low cost. We know how to find and retain the top IT personnel because we are the top IT personnel.

Most other computer consulting companies are owned and run by non-technical people with sales, marketing or business backgrounds while Masley And Associates is owned by a network engineer and administrator with multiple certifications and thirteen years hands-on experience in the field. Who would you rather have managing your IT Department; an experienced IT Professional or a Sales and Marketing guy?

We have twelve years of experience in IT, Management and multiple Certifications in networking including Microsoft and Novell – CNE, CNA, MCSE. We have five accredited, professional, certified computer technicians on our staff ready to serve you. Here is what a qualified IT Manager, Network Engineer, Network Administrator resume looks like.

What this means to our clients is greater efficiency. While it would be no problem to use a high school “geek” to add memory to your home computer, most businesses would not want a high school “geek” working on their business network yet sometimes that is exactly what happens to some unfortunate businesses.

So how does an unknowing business find true IT professionals who are competent and capable of working on their systems and network?

1. Ask exactly which ceritifications they have and make sure they are certified in the “Top Three” – Microsoft, Novell and Cisco(they take years of study and practice to obtain). Most computer consulting companies find high school “geeks” willing to work for $20 per hour or less, get them their A+ certification(a one-day, basic PC knowledge test) and charge you more than $75 per hour for them! The truth is most other computer consulting companies are only qualified to replace memory or adapter cards in a PC.

2. Ask for references.

3. Ask for a guarantee.

4. Check BBB.com The Better Business Bureau for the company’s rating.

5. Ask how long they have been working in the IT industry and a description of some of the larger, more complex projects they have worked on.

The bottom line is your network is critical to your business and belongs in the hands of the professionals in order to save you time, money and effort. We are the professionals. Think of us as your outsourced IT department. Contact us today we are always available for hire.

I’m done with my night duties.
For the past 3 nights I’ve been burning the midnight oil (yes, I do!!)
revising through the Magnet Designation and stuff.
And with Sister assigning me as one of the Magnet Champion..
she must be ridiculous.
Minus my 3 years of poly-days attachments in CGH,
I know nuts about the current practising governance committee, councils etc.
Goshh such an accreditation is definitely costly.
Hopefully I’ll be able to vomit back whatever information
that is blocked in the posterior pocket of my cerebral cortex.
heex!

Many job seekers agonize over which resume format to use — chronological or functional? Will choosing one format over the other impact the effectiveness of the resume? Yes it can, but not in the way that most job seekers think it will.

What Resume Format is Right for You?
Alesia Benedict, CPRW, JCTC.

The two types of resume formats are very different. Chronological format details the job history in reverse time order, starting with the most recent position and working backwards. This format is the one that most recruiters and hiring managers prefer.

Chronological Format

Employers need to see details about your work history and experience, but they don’t need to know everything. Keep information germane to the goal of attaining an interview. Eliminate information that is not related and will not have direct impact on winning the interview.

Benefits to using a chronological resume include:

Shows your results. The reader can specifically see when and where a candidate achieved results. The guess work is eliminated.

Shows your range. A chronological format highlights flexibility. Many job seekers have held varying positions over their careers, often in different functions and roles. A good strategy is to showcase that diversity.

Shows your record of success. The progression of a candidate’s career, records of promotion, and increases in responsibility are shown clearly. These attest to a candidate’s performance record and drive to succeed.

Some job seekers worry about employment. Small gaps in employment (a year or less) are common these days. Lay-offs, mergers, acquisitions impact nearly everyone’s lives. Handled strategically, they can be minimized in a chronological resume.

Functional Format:

Also known as a “skills resume” it has the content arranged according to performance type and function. A human resource professional for example, might divide his/her skills into categories such as Employee Training, Benefits Management, and Workforce Development. Under each category, the relevant information would be listed or described.

A brief work history listing comes at the end of the document listing job title, employer, and dates. I’ve seen some functional resumes with no employment dates at all. That is a big mistake.

A functional format is generally chosen when attempting to make a career change or to minimize a career blemish. Often, the functional format is used when a large span of time is missing from the work history.

Problems associated with the functional resume:

Where’s the information? Recruiters and hiring managers dislike hunting for information. They want to see past performance, and understand your background.

What’s the context? The functional format takes away all frames of reference. A candidate might claim attaining a record breaking sales contract but the reader is unable to place that in context in terms of time and employer. Was that success in sales recent or ten years ago? It’s difficult to tell in a functional resume.

What’s the problem? Recruiters and hiring managers know that the functional format is often used to try to cover something up. The functional format serves as a red flag — “What is this candidate trying to hide?” The use of the format to overcome a detriment actually serves to draw attention to it.

Today’s job seeker is wise to stick with the chronological format as it provides the necessary information to urge the reader to contact the candidate for an interview.

About the Author:

by Guest Contributer [Source: http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-22_11-6045887.html?tag=content;leftCol]

These suggestions are based on the article “Choose your words carefully when crafting a resume,” by Molly Joss.

It’s hard to believe that a few words could irritate someone enough to make them stop reading your resume, but it’s true. Some hiring managers and recruiters admit that they have their own mental lists of words that annoy them. Resume how-to books may recommend that you pack your resume full of as many verbs, adjectives, and adverbs as you can. But if you aren’t careful, you could turn off more prospective employers than you entice. Effective word choice is what really appeals to hiring managers–not action verbs and glittery modifiers. Here’s a rundown of some words that hiring managers say detract from the persuasiveness of resumes they see.

Assist, assisted

Reasons to avoid: Hiring managers want to know what you did, not how you helped. If you’re familiar enough with a task to put it on your resume, you can choose a better word than assist.

Example: Assisted marketing director by researching PDAs.

Possible rephrasing: Researched PDAs for marketing department.

Experiment

Reasons to avoid: No one wants to hear about what you tried to do–only what you have accomplished.

Example: Experimented with new LAN management software.

Possible rephrasing: Tested and evaluated new LAN management software.

Skillfully, effectively, carefully, quickly, expert, mastered

Reasons to avoid: Hiring managers often object to words that describe how well you do a particular task. In many cases, it comes across as boastful–and it’s unnecessary. “If you aren’t good at it, why are you putting it on your resume?” one recruiter said.

Example: Skillfully managed transition from Windows NT to Windows Server 2003.

Possible rephrasing: Migrated organization from Windows NT to Windows Server 2003 with no downtime during business hours.

Cutting-edge, detail-oriented; coordinate, facilitate, transform; proven ability, synergy, and liaison

Reasons to avoid: Hiring managers say such words take up space without communicating much. They’ve seen them so often that the words have lost their original energy.

Example: Detail-oriented manager with proven ability to oversee day-to-day network operations and to implement major technology initiatives.

Possible rephrasing: Supervised an eight-member IS staff; completed two full-scale platform migrations; consolidated equipment and resources following facilities move.

Responsible for…

Reasons to avoid: You’re a manager, so of course you’re responsible for something. Specify exactly what your responsibilities are and work in a few numbers to convey the scope of what you do.

Example: Responsible for managing inventory, overseeing network operations, making new equipment purchases, troubleshooting workstation issues.

Possible rephrasing: Supervised the support of 70 users running Windows XP and two servers running Windows Server 2003; implemented asset management plan for inventorying equipment; built a network operations team responsible for the internal infrastructure.

Today I met with Bronwyn to work on resume enhancement and to do a dry run of my HRIS presentation.

Today I met with Bronwyn to work on resume enhancement and to do a dry run of my HRIS presentation. The resume enhancement was wonderful, and I was so glad that Bronwyn helped me! She had me begin by doing a few excercise where I selected tasks I had done and skills I have acquired throughout my life–not just on the job. It was enlightening, and made me think twice about what kinds of skills I actually possess. Next, she had me pick traits to describe myself and my work ethic. We combined the information from these exercises to help me come up with my summary statement, which is: ” I am a dependable, results oriented, reliable professional. My skills include research, analysis, writing, and organizing. I have worked in the telecommunication, financial services, and customer service industries.” It might not sound like much to anyone else, but to me, it sounds perfect! The statement is clear, concise, but also detailed enough to make someone want to look twice at my information.

After we created the summary statement, we took a look at my actual resume. Much of what Bronwyn suggested I do was in regards to formatting (i.e. moving things around). However, she did advise me to cut down on the amount of bullet points I had, as well as to make sure that those points explained not only what I did but what the outcome of my actions were. It was wonderful advise, I can see how it will make my resume stand out among others.

After we completed the resume enhancement, I did the dry run of the HRIS presentation I will be giving to Missie (and the rest of the HR team) on Thursday, December third. Although Bronwyn loved the research paper itself, she was not crazy about my power Point presentation. Her main concern was that it was very long–something that I totally agreed with. Unfortunately, until we spoke, I just didn’t know where to cut information from. She suggested that I consolidate a few slides as well as remove a few that had unneccessary information. I have done so this evening, and sent it back over to her for review, and I hope that she’ll be pleased with everything. If not, at least I have a few days to rework it again as necessary. Frankly, I am at the point that I want to just get the presentation over with! I know that sounds rude, but I have been working so long and so hard on this project that I am ready to see its end.

The one thing that does make me sad is that today finished up my internship hours. The last time I’ll ever go will be when I do the presentation next week. I have truly learned so much at Goodwill, and I have enjoyed the people I’ve had the chance to interact with. I am going to miss them all!

Speaking of the end of my internship, I got the due date for the final paper from Charlyne this morning, so I know that I’ll need to have everything squared away by December eighth. The date shouldn’t be a problem since I’ve been working off-and-on on the paper as I have completed each of the learning objectives. She and I will be meeting on the due date to discuss everything and so that I can turn the paper in. I’m looking forward to it!

As previously posted in “Great Resources”, the resume is key to the interview process.

As previously posted in “Great Resources”, the resume is key to the interview process. There are numerous formats out there to choose from and there has long been a debate about whether to have a one page resume or something longer. I personally shoot for a two – three page resume, but no more than that. I have reviewed and edited numerous resumes (well over 300) and I find that with the one page resumes, they lack substantial detail, ultimately failing to grab my attention. The resumes that are basic mini-stories, sometimes being five pages long, indicate to me that you are not able to be concise and direct in proving your utility to the company.

To get you thinking about what a resume should look like check out these sample resumes. What you will find at www.Esampleresume.com is a collection of real-life resumes that individuals have been willing to submit for others review while stripping their true contact info. Spend some time perusing the cite and decide on what style you like.

Further, once you’ve decided upon a company to submit your resume to give Human Resources a call. Let them know you are interested in “XYZ” position and that you will be submitting your resume, however you have a few questions. Ask whether the resume goes into a resume bank prior to being reviewed by a person. This is key. I am also always interested in how many other people have applied, as well as when the due date for selecting the new employee is. I made the initial mistake of thinking that the hiring process would be quick. It can take weeks or even months to hear anything back, if at all.

Resume banks generally search on key words and if a resume is lacking in the key word search then the resume does not score high enough and it will not be seen by a person. So be sure to pay close attention to what information you are given during the conversation with HR. “The devil is in the details”.

Be sure to include a cover letter, too. Everyone does a resume, but not everyone provides a cover letter. The cover letter is where you really have to sell yourself. Much like the resume bank, if the cover letter is not quality (i.e. not enticing), then the reviewer will simply pass over the resume. Forget all the fine details and shoot for a broad overview that captures the highlights of your experience. Think salesman when you are writing the cover letter. If you have a very finite amount of space (you do not want a long cover letter) to brag about yourself, what would you write?

It always helps to get another set of eyes on a resume, so if you’d like help I’m more than happy to take a look at what you’re proposing to submit. Happy hunting and best of luck!

Money for big solar projects, frozen since January 2009, has begun to slowly flow again since late summer.

Talented job-seekers going crazy from the silence of 2009 are starting to hear their phones ring with calls from recruiters who have heard of them through their networks, not job boards or applications. There is an expectation that hiring will really open up in January 2010. Recruiters are fattening their candidate pipes and trying to get interviews for January seats conducted by their clients now, if possible.

In addition to new seats opening in January 2010, there is a prediction that a game of musical chairs will also be underfoot. Many employees have played it safe with their jobs this past year, or have taken available positions with too long a commute, or not their aspirational fit: These folks will likely be on the move.

On December 5th, the Vineyard Christian Church of Crystal Lake will be hosting its second free job search seminar and resume workshop. This time, in addition to Tom Siciliano, author of Shifting into a Higher Gear: An Owner’s Manual for Uniting Your Calling and Your Career and Rich Rostron, owner of OnTarget Resumes, Pat Kampert former Chicago Tribune editor and reporter will speak.

The first event, three months ago, featured the first two speakers who will again present similar material. Rostron spoke on some common mistakes that hinder resumes. He and a team of his fellow resume professionals then provided free resume reviews for those that signed up for it. Similar service will be provided this time around.

Siciliano spoke about the hidden job market, those positions that have not been posted yet or possibly not even identified. His talk was informative about what is happening in the job market that is not obvious at a glance. He then offered strategies on how to penetrate the market and join the companies at the top of your list. This session will feature many similar tips on how to earn the interview and then win the job.

Kampert will speak on the power of your story. This will help focus on what is unique about you that makes you a valid candidate for the position for which you are applying.

The event will take place at the Country Inn and Suites, 600 Tracy Trail in Crystal Lake, IL. The event begins at 8:30 a.m. with free continental breakfast and the opportunity to network. Further networking will take place through out the morning. Resume reviews will be limited, so arrive early in order to reserve a spot.

When you are out of work and looking for a job, worry and stress are constant reminders of the fact

When you are out of work and looking for a job, worry and stress are constant reminders of the fact you need to find a job. Sometimes, those feelings, and the reality of bills piled on the table, lead us to press harder, and in some cases become desperate for work. You treat finding a job like a job, but when the leads dry up, you either apply for a job well beneath your skill and pay level, and/or you find other ways you think will help in your search. Suddenly your resume looks like Word puked it’s color palate menu all over, and the format gods went border crazy. The “Blah blahs” invaded the body of the resume, once a svelte collection of concise professional accomplishments has bloated to umpteen pages of ramblings that in some states, you would get arrested for. And in the worst cases, embellishing one’s resume leads to downright lies about experience that could haunt the remainder of your career.

But we’re not going to let that happen!

The Resume

STOP! Put down the charcoal-linen-colored parchment you were going to stick in your printer. In today’s world, you resume has to stand on its own two feet. Call them Merit and Accomplishment. Just the facts ma’am. If it worked for Joe Friday*, it will work for us.

Your resume is your business card; it is your introduction to prospective employers, and certainly should not be your autobiography. It is meant to be representative of who YOU are. Forget the fancy “resume” services out there who will pray on your desperation that you need the world’s greatest resume to get a job. They’ll have you handing over dollar after dollar only to produce something that may look great, and read great, but isn’t you. If a company will deny considering you for employment because your resume wasn’t professionally done, then do you want to work for them anyways?

Your resume shouldn’t be drawn on the back of the kid’s menu/paper place mat at the corner coffee-shop with the waxy green crayons Crazy Grandma Barb at the front counter let you have. But it doesn’t need to come from Saks Fifth Avenue either. Besides, if you still really want help, I know how you can get feedback and help from real professionals – for free! More on that another time…

Building (or updating) your resume is a personal journey that anyone seeking a job really should undertake, as it will help you better understand who you are professionally and what you offer prospective employers. What you find out about yourself in this process is also typically the answer to the “tell me about you” question that starts so many interviews.

So what should the resume look like then?

First, please note that this is geared towards people in technology professions and therefore some of the information may not apply. But read it anyways because most of it will help and because we asked nicely.

There are plenty of templates available on the web and in MS Word (and I presume whatever the Mac folks use), or ask a friend or colleague to see their resume as an example. There are many different formats that work well so find one that you are comfortable with. I highly recommend you do not use templates that are built with spreadsheet-like cells and tables. Many companies, and most of the online job boards, use automated software for uploading your resume to internal systems and some can’t recognize tables and sections. And if someone (a recruiter or headhunter) is going to represent you at a client, they will probably want to move your resume to their letterhead. From experience – that’s not fun to do when it’s full of tables and cells and text boxes.

When printing out your resume, use normal plain white paper. You don’t need fancy paper or colors to get someone’s attention. Maybe back in the day when you had to slather your saliva on a stamp and slap it on an envelope and mailing your profile to a company this worked, but now I look at such resumes and see someone fluffing and trying to draw attention away from their actual skills and experience. Choose one font (Arial, Times New Roman, Calibri all work well) and do not mix and match different fonts in the resume. You can utilize font sizes and styles to subtly distinguish between different sections of your resume if you choose, but this also can be accomplished through the use of bold and underlined lettering.

Any good story has 3 Acts.

Every resume should have essentially 3 sections: Summary, Experience, and Education/etc.

The “Summary” section is a brief description (2-3 sentences) of who you are professionally, followed by a list of your technical skills and abilities. This entire section really should be no more than a half page, maybe ¾ of a page if you really have that many skills. Only list the main skills and not every Tom, Dick and Harry tool or scripting language you have used. We know you know how to use Word and Excel!

Next is your “Professional Experience.” Trust me, no hiring manager or recruiter wants to see 4 long narrative paragraphs about each job and/or project you have worked on. It might very well be interesting reading – who are we kidding? No it’s not. Regardless, no one has the time to read through it in detail. If we wanted to read a novel, we would go to a library. Instead, briefly describe your role and responsibilities and what your employer does/makes/sells/etc. (2-4 sentences). Then bullet-point your specific, and best accomplishments and achievements (I recommend no more than about 5 such items – after all there will be plenty of time later for patting yourself on the back). If you worked with specific technical skills on a project or projects, you can then list that technical environment as well.

Following professional experience, highlight your “Education,” including college and any other programs/courses that would be of specific help in the job you are seeking. No, we don’t need to see Underwater Basket Weaving 101 on the resume. Stick to what is important to your background. Oh yeah, don’t forget to list certifications and other accomplishments outside the realm of your work experience that would be an added benefit to prospective employers.

Lastly, your contact information at the top of your resume is extremely important. DUH! But many people make the mistake of over or under doing it. List your home address (at least city of residence), along with the best number to reach you at (don’t list multiple phone numbers) and one email address. That email address should be something simple that includes your name. If your email address is something like fridaynitepartier@anymail.com, you might want to get a new email address for your job search. Yes it’s ok to list your LinkedIn public profile, but please spare us the Facebook and MySpace and Twitter addresses. We’ll friend you (maybe) if we hire you. Besides, nowadays you could lose your job for pictures on Facebook! . Imagine trying to get one that way.

Lights, Camera…

After you have a draft of your resume, go back and re-read it. Then do it one more time and correct any spelling or grammatical errors. Nothing turns an employer off faster than someone who couldn’t be bothered to spell-check their resume before submitting it. It also tells the employer you are not someone who pays attention to detail.

Once you are satisfied with your resume draft, ask friends or family to review and edit it – you’ll be cross-eyed from looking at it yourself so many times that a fresh set of eyes will notice any grammatical or other errors you and your computer missed.

Now you have your resume! I know, I know – you still hear the ringings of those “resume services” guys and still would like a professional to look at it, right? Then all you need to do is ask your friends and colleagues to recommend a good recruiter or two. In future posts we will talk all about recruiters, but remember they are the professionals who work with resumes every day. Who better to know what does and doesn’t work? Most of the good ones will review your resume and offer you strong constructive feedback, especially if you ask them to. In some cases, recruiters and headhunters will actually offer to rewrite your resume for free! (okay it’s rare, but we’ve done it).

* Det. Joe Friday on Dragnet (played by Jack Webb who also created the show) never actually said these words that have so famously been attributed to him in pop culture. Read more here.
