All of Excel Recrutiment’s consultants are experts in retail having an abundance of retail experience between them. They are all incredibly passionate about ensuring that there is a team atmosphere and that all consumers are met with the highest standard of customer service; not only is this simply good business practice, it is something that is more important than ever as retailers struggle to secure their ground. People Power refers to two things in retail: Team work and customer focus, and often the two go hand-in-hand to improve the overall image of your retail outlet and to increase sales as well.

Teams in retail are as important an asset as any and it is harder to ensure with increasing staff turnovers. It is vital to ensure that all members of staff feel that they belong in your retail store and that a common set of goals brings each member together to work as team for the good of the business. Any good manager will have the skill-set to adopt a team-friendly approach in order to encourage staff members to work together rather than competitively. There are several reasons as to why a manager should encourage a team effort in his/her retail store; the most obvious being productivity. If there is a competitive atmosphere in the store productivity may also be high, however you are at risk of making those who are not competitive by nature feel alienated which will create a general adverse air about your business. If staff members are working together the morale in the retail store will increase; which in turn effects not only the image given of your business but it also heightens the level of work being carried out. Staff members will be conscious of their efforts because they are aware that it does not just effect the image they are portraying of themselves to management but the overall image of the staff as a whole. Delegating jobs within a team will also give members of staff a sense of responsibility and purpose within the retail store; making them more attentive and proud of the work they are doing.

Another element of retailing which is positively affected by the presence of team-work is Customer Service. This can exist without the presence of a well-built team environment however the value of having a team makes the invaluable nature of good customer service more maintainable. If the employees have pride for their team instilled in them they will feel obliged to ensure that the positive image is conveyed to their customers. As you all know there are peak times at which any retail store can become busy, often with customers wandering the store awaiting assistance. It becomes almost automatic for each team member to respond when they see a customer who needs help, if another member of staff is otherwise occupied. This is an important practice to have in your retail business as customer service is the backbone of every retail store.

There is more to customer service than simply asking a customer if they need any help while walking the shop floor. It is essentially a tool to gain sales and loyalty from people that come into your store and while they say that with the service industry bad impressions travel quicker than good; if you ensure that your business is providing a friendly and serviceable environment for customers, your name could replace that of another business who gave a less than favourable impression. Think of it yourself; how many times have you recommended somewhere that you feel provided good service while someone else was complaining about another place with bad service. If you are attentive and happy towards one customer, they will come back, and probably with a friend. To provide a desirable service to your customers do not to just launch into a sales pitch; ask them how they are, what they are looking for, listen to every detail of their story; why they need what they are looking to buy and who it is for and guide the customer to what they are looking for; do NOT just point them in the direction- this seems lazy and it gives the impression that you don’t care whether they get what they need. Once they have picked out exactly the item they need, ask them if there is anything else they require help with, and if not assure them that they can come and ask you if they have any questions. It’s simple but effective and will give the ideal impression you wish to give of your retail business no matter what the size or sector.

If you incorporate these positive elements into your business you will soon begin to see more and more familiar faces entering your shop for the wonderful service and happy atmosphere provided by the team environment. It is important these days to provide stellar service to your customers and this cannot be provided without the combined effort of your staff members; Hence People Power is more important than ever for the success of your retail business.
