El día martes recién pasado se realizó la primera reunión del Cemed con la Decana de la Facultad de Medicina UDP, Dra. Patricia Muñoz Casas Del Valle.

En esta reunión nos presentamos como Cemed y presentamos nuestros principales proyectos para poder contar con el apoyo de la Facultad en la realización de aquellos proyectos durante el próximo año.

Tuvimos una excelente recepción de parte de esta autoridad, nos dimos cuenta que tenemos los mismos objetivos con respecto a la comunidad de la Escuela y de la Facultad, de confirmación del perfil y creación del sello del médico UDP, de integración de los alumnos dentro de la Escuela y dentro de la Facultad, de la integración de los docentes con los estudiantes, de los funcionarios, etc. De este modo, lograr una identidad propia y crear vida universitaria dentro de la Facultad, que tanta falta nos hace como estudiantes universitarios.

Definimos los proyectos principales que realizaremos durante el próximo año, los cuales cuentan con el apoyo de Decanato para su realización. Entre ellos se encuentran:

- Realización de la Semana de la Facultad de Medicina en octubre, con Hospital Abierto, alianzas, campeonatos deportivos, etc., con la participación de todos los alumnos de la Facultad.

- Cónclave entre estudiantes, docentes y funcionarios de la Escuela, donde se podrán analizar los objetivos logrados durante la existencia de la Escuela, el sello del médico portaliano, la vida universitaria en la Escuela, etc.

- Grupo de voluntariado estable durante todo el año, que incluirá a todos los alumnos de la Facultad que estén dispuestos a formar parte del grupo, desde el cual nacerán las ideas para la realización de proyectos, además de proyectos que podrá plantear el Cemed.

- La realización de un Taller de Clown Hospitalario para los alumnos de la Escuela.

- Tradicional Gala de Medicina.

- Creación de espacios de estar y de convivencia para los alumnos de la Facultad.

Queremos agradecer a todos quienes han hecho y harán la formulación de estos proyectos y la realización de los mismos, al igual que agradecer el apoyo de la Dra. Muñoz y su buena recepción de nuestras ideas.

Hoxe xoves 26, a partir das 19:30 horas, terá lugar unha charla informativa no auditorio do Fórum Metropolitano (Rúa Río Monelos 1) na que o colectivo de arquitectos “desescribir” presentará a iniciativa Hortas na cidade dos barrios (http://hortasnacidade.wordpress.com/) a tódalas persoas da cidade que podan estar interesadas en participar na mesma.

Explicarase o interese existente na recuperación de antigas hortas e terreos na actualidade abandonados no Val de Feáns para poñelos de novo en uso e contribuír así á súa axeitada conservación e mantemento. Explicaranse mecanismos de xestión para que propietarios de terras na actualidade sen uso as podan ceder ou alugar a persoas de calquera zona da cidade que estean interesadas en as traballar como hortas e cultivos. Deste xeito preténdense tamén explorar alternativas de futuro para as áreas rurais de A Coruña.

Despois dun primeiro encontro o pasado sábado 21 cos habitantes de Feáns, da boa acollida que tivo a proposta e de que algúns dos veciños mostrasen interese en tomar parte da iniciativa, convócase a reunión no Fórum Metropolitano para coñece-la demanda e interese que poda existir entre posibles usuarios destas hortas urbanas.

Para o sábado 28 de Novembro está convocada unha xornada de visita ó Val de Feáns. As actividades comezarán cun roteiro guiado que, partindo do Centro Cívico de Feáns ás 12:00, percorrerá a zona. Seguirá ó mesmo un acto de inauguración dunha caseta de apeiros/punto de información da iniciativa e celebrarase unha comida comunitaria. Estes actos, abertos tanto a veciños como a visitantes, continuarán pola tarde.

In case you are thinking of purchasing the new global version of Amazon’s Kindle for Christmas, be aware that there are still quite a few places that the global version will NOT work.  I was disappointed to find that the new version still will not work in my country.

Apparently the new global version will only work in SOME countries.   I thought it would be helpful to most expats to have a complete list of which countries it will, or will not work in (below).

It’s also interesting to note the PATTERN of groups of countries where the Kindle doesn’t work–some countries probably lack satellite coverage or delivery systems, while others probably don’t WANT readers to be able to download whatever they want by satellite.

I was in Vancouver. There was a layer of ash over everything. There was snow in the background, in the mountains.

I was living next to an odd river. I was upset it was fake. It was somewhere up north. I went into the river, it had no water. They always turned off the water in the Fall. I was standing in it, when suddenly someone turned on the water again. I was stuck in the river. There was a child following me.

September 6^th

I was in a strange mall. I wanted to get a camera. It was a Canon and it folded up to be tiny and could be carried on a key ring, but still had all the available features.

September 7^th

I was stuck in a mall. I couldn’t leave. One of the stores was closing down, so I stole something. There was a priest there. My car fell off a bridge into the water. I saw the word horseman.

September 13^th

I was on a boat. There was a swamp we were going through. There were weird animals in the swamp, including a huge snake. I had to meet some strange man named Richard at a coffee shop.

September 15^th

I was at a school reunion. Things were strange, I got lost. Every store was having a huge sale. Staci, a girl from school, had become a missionary. Suddenly, I was at a water park. I had to walk over a huge hole full of water to get to the rides. There was a couple that kept insisting that Ted Kennedy was still alive.

September 16^th

I was with a strange, unknown woman. We were both looking at a map of North America. We were looking at places we thought should have waterfront property, creating floods. We were concentrating on the North. There was a judge living with her son in that area, for some reason we thought it should be flooded.

September 20^th

I was in a mall in Washington DC, with another girl. She was modeling clothes. We were trying to steal tea. Suddenly, I was with Laura Bush. She was talking about her kayak that could fit in the bathtub. We were working on a calendar, I was walking a dog. The dog was trying to eat a poisonous plant, I wouldn’t let him. I tried to eat the plant.

September 23^rd

I was at some sort of auditorium with Laura Bush, GW Bush and Obama. There was something wrong, something sad was happening. I was trying to help Laura Bush. I was showing her my cat.

September 26^th

I was standing on a hill, watching the sea. There were a lot of people on the beach, having fun. A huge wave came out of nowhere. People went into the water and drowned. There was a car in the water. It was like a toy and got swept out to sea.

September 29^th

I was in an airplane with a strange man who had wild brown hair and a wild beard. We were trying to get over the international dateline, but we were having problems.

October 3^rd

There was a man, somewhere in the Middle East, amongst Arabs. He was not Arabic. He was walking through a very poor village. He got in a small plane to pilot it, it crashed in water. He lived, but had too many secrets. He had a pill, took it, and died. He was in very shallow water.

October 9^th

I was riding a bike along the South American coast, something was wrong, the atmosphere was all weird and a hole opened up in the sky.

October 12^th

I was in Africa. There was terrible flooding. I was trying to get to places on a bus. People kept trying to get into my backpack and steal things.

October 26^th

I was looking at a floor, it was ruined by water and age. There was American money all over the place, but it was moldy and in bad shape. People were trying to grab the money, but it fell apart in their hands.

October 27^th

I was in an old house, getting ready to move. Satan was changing bodies, he was in a little boy. My parents old buffet had stuff in it. Things were empty all over the Quad Cities, all the stores were closed. One of the parks had weeds and plant growth all over it, like nobody had taken care of it. People were gone.

Hace unas semana se anunció que se haría la primera reunión del Grupo de Usuarios de Tecnologías de Google (GTUG) en México y para ello se pidió que apoyaran diciendo que día sería el mejor para realizarla, y el día determinado por los resultados de la encuesta es el 28 de noviembre, ser llevará a cabo en el Starbucks de Presidente Masaryk a las 10:00 a.m.

Thanksgiving is a-comin’, ladies! Time for some turkey, stuffing (my absolute favorite treat on earth) and reuniting with all your old home friends. Oh, and hopefully a major shopping spree with mom. Is there any other reason to come home?

For those of you lucky ladies who are finally 21 (or those of you with a really good fake), Thanksgiving also means taking part in the biggest bar night of the year! I remember my first Wednesday-Before-Thanksgiving bar experience…at least until I blacked out due to the extreme levels of awkwardness and puked in my parents’ house.

Try explaining that one to dad when he finds you passed out next to the toilet the following morning.

Anyways, being that it is the biggest bar night of the year, there are so many things to know! And, being that I have been doing it for a little while now, I feel I am the perfect person to enlighten you on what to expect and how to deal.

What to Expect: Running into people you never liked and still don’t like.

How to Deal: I tend to hightail it to the bar, but if you don’t want to end up looking up at your dad from the tile floor the next morning, perhaps playing nice is a good idea. You know; pretend to care what they have to say, tell them how good they look and politely bow out when you (pretend to) see a friend across the room.

What to Expect: Saying the same things over (and over and over) again.

How to Deal: I recommend printing a t-shirt that includes the following information: what school you go to, what (if any) sorority you are in, and an acknowledgment to the fact that you gained/lost weight. When you realize that these are the topics discussed all freaking night long you will thank me.

What to Expect: Awkwardly running into people you haven’t called back since you have been so busy doin’ your thang at school.

How to Deal: Is avoidance an option? If so, I recommend the duck and cover. If this is not an option (because ducking under the nearest table would cause quite a scene/you opted to wear a dress) turning the blame on the other person is always best. Approach them with intention and ask them why they don’t return your calls, explain that you have been tirelessly trying to reach them and it is so crazy that you can’t seem to connect. Make them feel guilty. Works like a charm.

What to Expect: The realization that a DD is necessary.

How to Deal: Make sure you don’t have a car available to you. Blame your parents, your siblings, or a dead battery; anything so you don’t have to be the sober one in the sea of awkward interactions. Trust me when I say that it is nearly impossible to get through this night without booze.

What to Expect: The realization that there is literally no late night food…especially in the form of delivery.

How to Deal: Those suburbs just don’t cater to the hungry-after-2am crowd. Pray for some Totino’s Pizza Rolls in mom’s freezer. Or some delicious leftovers. Do not – under any circumstances – dig into the pumpkin pie reserved for the following day. It is not worth that look of disappointment on mom’s face when she has nothing to serve for dessert.

Now you know and – as G.I. Joe once said – knowing is half the battle. The other half, of course, is finding the perfect outfit.

Last night I had my London reunion dinner at Trina’s Starlite Lounge in Somerville. I loved this bar/restaurant!

From the outside it looks kind of sketchy but the inside was so adorable

We all got caught up reminiscing and I didn’t take any pictures of the food….I know, what a terrible blogger! Every single one of the guys ordered a burger “Starlite Style,” which is a double cheeseburger with coleslaw, spicy sauce and fries on the burger. They were all obsessed! They also ordered gravy fries and onion rings. I had a bite of the burger and I have to say it was pretty amazing.

I had the chopped salad and a cup of chili. The salad was disappointing, just shredded iceberg with some veggies on top. I guess this isn’t the kind of place where you order a salad! The chili was AWESOME. Sweet and spicy and served in a mug. I also had a Berkshire Brewing Company Coffeehouse Porter, which was delicious of course.

It was so great to see everyone, but I am definitely a little tired this morning. I’m sitting at my desk enjoying a little bit of this:

How is everyone feeling about Thanksgiving? This is always the time of year where it gets tough for me to fit in my workouts. It is also getting colder which doesn’t help. I am taking a day off today because my body needs it, but I can’t help feeling a little guilty that I won’t be working out Thursday, Friday or Saturday at least….

We went to ihop today for our last little reunion before Thanksgiving break and I had so much fun.  It kinda reminded me of how we use to be. I miss that.

QUALITY!!! GOOD TO SEE THEM TOGETHER AGAIN!!!

Every few years, a band that was popular in the seventies or eighties who had broken up will reunite and go on a tour.   In the tours of this nature that I’ve seen (Yes and REM, specifically), the performances were great.

The one group I would like to see reunite is Genesis.  Now, I know they did reunite a couple of years ago, but it wasn’t the lineup I wanted.  During my favorite era of Genesis’ history, the lineup was Peter Gabriel on Vocals, Steve Hackett on Guitar, Mike Rutherford on Bass, Tony Banks on Keyboards and Phil Collins on Drums.  This era, roughly from 1971-1975, produced my favorite Genesis songs.  That’s not to say that I don’t like their later work, but 1971-1975 is second to none.

It’s that lineup that I wish reunited and toured.  There have been rumors of them reuniting from time to time, but they never actually happened.  If they did actually reunite to play live, this is the set list I would like them to play:

1. Lamb Lies Down on Broadway/Fly on a Windshield/Broadway Melody of 1974 – These are the first three songs of Lamb Lies Down on Broadway and exemplify this classic era lineup- great musicianship, excellent lyrics, expert use of dramatic dynamics.  Of these, Broadway Melody is my favorite, but instrumental section at the end of Fly on a Windshield is as heavy as they get.

2. Get ‘Em Out By Friday – This is from Foxtrot (1972).  This is an interesting song, about a fictional version of England where the Directors of Genetic Control have decided to make people shorter.  Peter plays a number of characters in this song, which adds to the drama.  Musically, it’s a busy song with some odd time signatures.  For the eight and a half minutes of the song, there aren’t a whole lot of breaks, which keeps you listening.

3. Firth of Fifth -  This is from Selling England By the Pound.  The lyrics aren’t the best, but the instrumental break contains one of Steve Hackett’s most dramatic solos. I get chills every time I hear it.  After he left the band, Mike Rutherford took over the solo.  While still dramatic, it’s not the same when Mike plays it.

4. Dancing with the Moonlight Knight – This is the opening track of Selling England By the Pound (1973).  It begins with Peter singing a cappella, then builds to a fast instrumental break.  The lyrics contain a number of mythological and English references, which I had to look up, but the first two minutes or so are some of the most beautiful singing and musical accompaniment in Genesis’ history.

5. The Musical Box – This song is from Nursery Cryme (1971) and is one of the most famous songs of the Classic Era.  The instrumental break goes from soft to very hard to soft and the last few minutes are pretty dramatic.  Lyrically, this song is pretty strange.  A boy’s soul is trapped in a musical box that plays Old King Cole.  When a girl (the one who actually killed the boy), opens the box, the boy comes back to life, but starts to age rapidly.  He becomes lecherous towards the girl, whose nanny walks in at the end and kills the “old” boy by throwing the musical box at him.  Like I said, it’s weird, but a great song.  In recent years, the band played the ending of the song as part of a medley.

6. More Fool Me – This is from To give Peter a break and let Phil sing, I’d like them to play this song.  It’s a strangely sweet song about a guy whose girlfriend walked out on him.

7. Anyway – This is from disc 2 of Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.  By far, my favorite Genesis song of all time.  Lamb was a concept album, but this song also works on it’s own.  It’s mainly about death, or more accurately, waiting for death.  The main character of the album and the song believes he is going to die and has accepted it, so he’s waiting for the end.  This song includes a great guitar solo, great piano playing and an active drum part.  If this song starts to play on my ipod, I’ll usually listen to it twice before moving to the next song.

8. In the Cage – This is from Disc 1 of Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.  I like the keyboard solo on this song most of all.  It’s a pretty fast song that is based on a difficult rhythm.

9. Supper’s Ready – This song is pretty much all of Side B From Foxtrot (Horizons, a short acoustic solo by Steve Hackett is also on Side B).  This is Genesis’  longest song  (over 23 minutes).  Over the course of the song, there are a number of different melodies.  Not all of the sections are great, but taken together, the song does a good job of building the drama to a great climax (a section called Apocalypse in 9/8).  One of my favorites, but I don’t always have 23 minutes to listen to a song.  They regularly played this song live, so I know they could play it during a reunion tour.

10. The Knife – This is the only song from the pre-Phil Collins and Steve Hackett lineup, from an album called Trespass.  In contrast to the rest of Trespass, it is a very aggressive song about a violent revolution.  They often used this as a closing number or an encore and I believe it is the perfect way to end the concert.

These 10 songs amount to about an hour and a half of music.  As an encore, I’d have them play Back in NYC (from Lamb Lies Down on Broadway), Watcher of the Skies (from Foxtrot) and I Know What I Like (from Selling England By the Pound).

The Curb Your Enthusiasm/Seinfeld reunion culminated in what is certainly to be one of the most iconic moments in television history. After accusing Jason Alexander (a.k.a. George Costanza) of having an affair with his ex-wife, Cheryl, Jason quit the Seinfeld reunion – leaving a gaping hole in the cast.

Who was to reprise George’s role?

Well, Larry David fanatics can all rejoice. Our curiosity regarding the actual similarities in character between George and Larry has now been satisfied. This scene literally made me jump from the couch in gleeful laughter. Brilliance. Utter brilliance.

Ésta ha sido mi primera Junta de Delegados a la que asisto como Máximo Representante Oficial de mis Súbidos, osea, vosotros. Y la verdad es que me ha decepcionado algo: me había imaginado una cosa parecida a las reuniones de las Comunidades de Vecinos, del estilo “Si no hablamos en alemán, los de alemán nos vamos”, “Si usted no quita ese toldo tan feo del aula, nosotros pondremos los listening a todo volumen”, y cosas así. Pero no ha habido ni tortas ni sangre ni nada. De hecho ha sido una reunión bastante tranquila.

En fin, empecemos a resumir lo que se ha acordado:

Biblioteca. Se ha ampliado el plazo para hacer uso del préstamo a domicilio. Ahora se pueden coger libros en junio y devolverlos en septiembre. Ideal para aquellos que hemos cogido gustillo a estudiar en pleno mes de agosto con 40 grados a la sombra.

Blogs. Habrá uno por departamento. Necesitan mucha ayuda con el blog de ruso, de donde dicen que no han encontrado nada (me pregunto dónde habrán buscado… si a la mínima que utilices el Google te encuentras con imágenes de Putin desnudo de cintura para arriba en poses sensuales).

Concurso de minirelatos. Las bases saldrán esta semana. Supongo que será en el idioma propio de cada clase (si no, no tendría gracia).

Página web. Se renovará pronto.

Exposición en el hall de la Escuela. Cada mes habrá una cosa nueva. Si tenéis dotes de artista (o las tiene un amigo, o vuestra novia, o vuestro perro) podéis solicitar al Departamento de Actividades Extraescolares (vaya departamentos más raros que hay en la Escuela) que esta persona pueda exponer allí. Luego ya se decidirá si finalmente expone o no, pero al menos podéis solicitarlo.

Ausencias. Quizá lo más importante. Solo será necesario justificar las ausencias si te pasas del máximo de horas permitidas. El máximo son 54. Si llegas a esa cifra… o justificas tus ausencias, o te vas derechito a la calle. Como no podemos saber qué nos deparará el futuro, lo ideal es que guardes las justificaciones de las ausencias aunque no tengas previsto faltar 54 horas a lo largo del curso, ya que puede ocurrir cualquier cosa que luego haga que sí que las necesites.

El 21 de mayo se publicará un listado con las ausencias de cada persona. Aquellos que hayan llegado o superado las 54 horas deberán entregar a partir de entonces los justificantes. Si no has llegado a esa cantidad, no importa que las justifiques. Y aunque entregues la justificación eso no significa que te vayan a conceder la gracia de seguir estudiando: si no convences a Dirección, puedes dar con tus huesos en la calle.

A partir de esta fecha (21 de mayo) habrá barra libre de faltas: ya no se contabilizarán las ausencias durante lo que quede del curso.

Problemas y soluciones. Si hay algún problema de clase, se puede pedir ayuda al delegado de curso (que mira tú por donde, soy yo), a los delegados de idioma (que son 3), a los representantes de los estudiantes en la Junta de la Escuela, a la jefa de estudios (su correo es jefestudiosalumnos.eoi1z@gmail.com), y por último a la Directora de la Escuela, en este orden, y de forma eliminatoria. Si llegas al último nivel sin tener tu problema solucionado ya no importará, porque estarás hasta los mismos de ir a instancias superiores una y otra vez.

Delegados de idioma. Se han elegido los delegado de idioma, que son 3 (un presidente y 2 vocales). Solo había 4 delegados de ruso que podían ser elegidos (los subdelegados presentes y los delegados ausentes no podían elegirse), de esos 4, 3 tenían que ser elegidos… Y se ha librado vuestro inteligente delegado. Si alguien quiere una prueba de que Dios existe, aquí la tiene.

Contacto. Existe un pequeño buzón cerca de conserjería para ponerse en contacto con los representantes estudiantiles de la Junta de Escuela. Se ignorarán las cartas anónimas, las pajaritas, y los barquitos de papel. También nos podemos poner en contacto con ellos a través del correo electrónico.

Alertas SMS. Y hablando del correo, se ha activado un nuevo sistema de avisos por SMS (mensajes para los hispanohablantes). Si al matricularte diste tu número de móvil, automáticamente tendrás el servicio activado. Si no lo has dado y quieres tenerlo, puedes darte de alta a través de Internet: vas a la página de la Escuela –> Zona de usuarios –> General –> Datos personales, y metes allí el móvil. Es algo totalmente voluntario, y sirve para recibir alertas de clases suspendidas, ausencias de profesorado (y reincorporaciones del mismo) y cosicas así. Que nadie se espere ver la CNN o escuchar la información del tiempo. Nos han advertido de que este sistema es nuevo, y como esto es España, pues si funciona correctamente a la primera se demostrará la existencia de la Santísima Trinidad (la existencia de Dios ya ha quedado demostrada anteriormente).

Horarios. Se ha hablado de los horarios, y de que prácticamente todos tienen 10 minutos de descanso, mientras que nosotros tenemos solo 2 caladas de cigarro (el equivalente a 5 minutos oficiales, pero un par reales). Además, quien no tiene descanso sale 15 minutos antes.

Sanseacabó. Y tras hora y media de rollo macabeo, se dio por concluida la reunión.
