Der Satz “It’s a big deal and it’s not going away” geht mir nicht mehr aus dem Sinn.

College marketers are breaking free of the back-to-school clutter and creating buzz with sidewalk advertising on and around campus. It’s not a new concept, but displaying your brand or seeding a new student targeted campaign with sidewalk ads is a fun way to add to your marketing mix. Here are some of the options available. *Please note that not all of the images below reflect work done by Campus Media.

Keep in mind, the installation of sidewalk ads is usually done ambush style – meaning permission from the school is not usually sought. If you keep it respectful and don’t damage property, much of it is tolerated, and backlash is rare. In some cases, permission can be gained by working directly with student groups or negotiating placement outside local businesses just off campus. If you go the permission route, expect slightly longer lead times and a nominal negotiation fee.

For more information on custom media installations, contact us at 952-854-3100 or info [at] campusmediagroup.com.

Well, nothing quite compares to artist Scott Wade. He produces whole works of art in the dirt on cars (he must live in a very dirty part of the USA!)

Reverse Graffiti’s greatest hits
From the website:

“Welcome to the world of reverse graffiti, where the artist’s weapons are cleaning materials and where the enemy is the elements: wind, rain, pollution and decay. It’s an art form that removes dust or dirt rather than adding paint. Some find it intriguing, beguiling, beautiful and imaginative, whereas others look upon it in much the same way as traditional graffiti – a complete lack of respect for the law. Reverse graffiti challenges ideals and perceptions while at the same time shapes and changes the environment in which we live, whether people think for the better, or not.”

What a wonderful combination of street art and environmental themes…it’s well worth checking out. All you need to pull something like this off is a bucket of water and a rag of some sort.

And in the interest of promoting local artists here in Ottawa, check out Pascale Conspiracy

Well, about a week or so ago I was making my rounds on my bike when I stumbled upon an old, half-rot

Well, about a week or so ago I was making my rounds on my bike when I stumbled upon an old, half-rotted wood chair being tossed away and decided to take it back to the workshop to salvage as much as I possibly could from it.

If I realized I’d be having these find-junk-and-transform-it adventures so often I’d start taking pictures of the whole process from start to finish. Maybe I’ll do that next time.

Anyways, my original thought was to saw the chair-back free from the rest, sand it down and make some sort of odd animal head, like I’ve done before.

But somewhere along the way it became this, which now hangs on a telephone pole near the Bank/Fourth intersection where it will hopefully brighten a few people’s days.

I’m sure that the connecting ground between street art and urban planning which I’ve been looking for for quite a while will be found in a decentralized, do-it-yourself and fluid approach towards planning. The growing urban farming movement is an example of a place where this line of thought is emerging. Eventually some sort of institutional approach towards locally producing our food will be (and will have to be)implemented, but as it stands now it’s still extremely DIY and collaborative.
Planetizen is a great urban-planning related blog, and their article on Urban Farming in Detroit is worth a read (especially since Detroit is being gutted in more ways than we would imagine. Food Deserts are growing at an alarming rate)

Oh, and take a look at the Reverse Graffiti Project. This is what happens when you selectively clean a dirty surface.

“Standing in one of the moss and dirt covered tunnels in Leeds, England, Paul Curtis, “Moose” as he calls himself, saw marks on the wall where the shoulders of unsteady drunks and the fingertips of curious children had exposed the shiny white tile. And with only a pair of socks as his tool, reverse graffiti was born.

No paint. No defacing. Moose makes his art by cleaning; removing the ills of dirt and pollution by de-defacing- wiping away dirt into large type and shapes, leaving nothing behind but a beautiful work of “green art.”

For the past ten years, Moose has been working to perfect his craft. More recently, his skill and notoriety have led to the creation of commissioned pieces as well.

Moose enjoys creating ‘legal graffiti’ although at times has been in the press for being a vandal. But no one has ever been able to make a case against him because as he says, “No one owns the dirt.” “

In a bid to promote the first Welsh baby show in Cardiff, a father-of-three has been stopped by police in the city centre

Ryan Deacon was helping his wife to promote the new Maud’s Baby Show, when his branded car attracted unexpected attention from the police this week.

Mr Deacon was surprised when he was approached by a policeman after stopping at a red traffic light, who asked if he had any event flyers he could give him.

“It was totally unexpected. As everyone feels when a policeman approaches your car, I thought I must have done something wrong!” commented Mr Deacon from Carmarthenshire.

“Instead, he smiled and said he’d heard about the shows and as his wife was due to have a baby soon, wondered if he could have some information about the event to take home to her.”

Mrs Deacon said: “I’ve also been approached by people in Cardiff while sat at the traffic lights – all wanting more information on the show. It’s all been quite overwhelming, but I’m so pleased. The marketing’s obviously working!”

Inspired by her experiences of isolation as a new mum, Mrs Deacon launched her new baby show business this year, to help Welsh people access the information they need when becoming parents. The Cardiff event will be held at the CIA on Saturday and Sunday this weekend.

Mrs Deacon’s innovative approach to marketing the events has also meant the first Reverse Graffiti on the streets of the city centre. An eco-friendly form of advertising and the opposite of conventional graffiti – parts of Cardiff’s streets have been cleaned by high pressure water hoses to display the Maud’s Baby Show polar bear logo.

Polar bears clean up the streets of Cardiff

Another coup for the event is the ABC Design TakeOff Compact Buggy, as seen in last week’s episode of The Apprentice and available to purchase at the CIA this weekend.

Named in memory of her grandmother, the Mauds Baby Show will donate half of the proceeds from its ticket sales to Leukaemia Research.

The event has attracted attention from and established partnerships with The Body Shop, Real Nappy Campaign Wales, the British Red Cross and the NCT, the UK’s leading charity for parents.

Leukaemia Research has been selected as the beneficiary from a percentage of each show’s ticket sales.

The Welsh Assembly has recognised Maud’s Baby Shows under the Breastfeeding Welcome Scheme, which identifies premises that understand and support the needs of breastfeeding mothers and their babies.

Free first aid lessons will be available for parents at each show from the British Red Cross, alongside parenting workshops provided by family support professional and author of the Preparenting Programme, Christine Meadows.

Free professionally-staffed crèche facilities which can cater for children with special needs will also be available.

Standing in one of the moss and dirt covered tunnels in Leeds, England, Paul Curtis, “Moose” as he calls himself, saw marks on the wall where the shoulders of unsteady drunks and the fingertips of curious children had exposed the shiny white tile.

But no one has ever been able to make a case against him because as he says, “No one owns the dirt.”

I saw the above recently on Broughton Street in Edinburgh. This is known as “clean graffiti” or “reverse graffiti”, and involves using a power washer to clean off grime and dirt, leaving behind clean patches that reveal some graffiti. In this case, a stencil would have been used. The main proponent of this form of graffiti in the UK is Paul Curtis, aka Moose, and his commercial clients include Big Brother, Xbox, the Metropolitan Police and Greenpeace.

The example above is also one of his designs, and is part of a campaign against benefit cheats by the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP).

It’s quite controversial for two reasons:

It’s using a form of graffiti, which is always going to attract criticism from certain sectors, despite in this case actually cleaning away dirt rather than using paint

It’s directly targeting groups of people, in the places they live, work and shop.

There was an article in the Scotsman last October complaining that this campaign was wrongly targeting residential property in Inverleith. Apparently the DWP had pre-agreed all sites with the council, and none should have been outside residential property.

After I saw this one on Broughton Street, quite clearly in front of the entrance to some flats, I put in a Freedom of Information request through the WhatDoTheyKnow.com site, to find out what other sites in Edinburgh had been hit by this campaign.

The Scotsman article quotes a DWP spokeswoman stating that 30 sites were agreed, but the response from Edinburgh City Council confirms it was really 36.

How many of the other locations also target private residential properties? The council has since removed the DWP adverts at the Goldenacre Mini Market on Inverleith Row and the Malthurst Pub on Montague Street, but how many still remain visible, wrongly intimidating law-abiding residents?
