After my desktop died and I had no money to replace it I started using my Lenovo 3000 N100 laptop as my main machine, for the task it was pumped up with another gig of ram but it too started to die. As money is short I had to look around for a quick replacement that would do the trick. I could either build my own or buy something prebuilt, I long ago swore that I wouldn’t waste time building anymore so this left me with the choice of one of these new nettop machines. Having played with with an ATOM powered netbook I was a little skeptical of the performance potential of such a setup for desktop tasks but this was after all a dual core ATOM capable of SMT and 64bit computing, additionally it has the nvidia ION chipset and GPU instead of the under performing Intel parts. Finally the machine comes with S/PDIF sound output and beefy 4 gigs of ram (one of these are taken by the GPU), you also get a set of USB speakers and a wireless keyboard/mouse combo.

The good parts:

The machine is easily mountable using the VESA compliant mount for your monitor, the performance is surprisingly good. The desktop feels snappy and there always seems to be a bit to give from even under load, even video playback without hardware acceleration (I haven’t yet made VDPAU work) is smooth. All your basic hardware is functional out of the box and the machine is very quiet. You get a plentiful 6 USB ports but access when mounted on a monitor they can be hard to access, there is HDMI output but I haven’t had a chance to try this as I lack supporting hardware finally the revo features eSATA. In short a very extendable and capable machine that comes equipped for a multitude of use cases.

The bad parts:

The S/PDIF output is placed on the topside of the machine when mounted in the VESA mount, meaning your fairly inflexible optical cable will hang from a height with no decent way to make it look good without breaking it – a modest suggestion for the next revision would be to put it on the bottom. You need the proprietary nvidia driver to make this run at it’s full potential, something I would rather avoid as I am uncomfortable using it. My Revo came with Windows 7 Home which I now have to fight to get refunded for, for an average user it does mean that you get a machine that will work when you turn it on but I would have liked the option to pick no OS or Linux preinstalled. Finally the wireless keyboard and mouse doesn’t work with Linux for some reason and Google turns up no immediate help as to making them work – mainly here I am interested in the keyboard as I love my trackball.

All in all, the Revo r3610 is an impressive machine. I am very pleased with it and would wholeheartedly recommend it, not just as a second machine or a media center, it actually makes for a fully sufficient desktop machine and it is a great bargain.

Revo uninstaller is a fantastic little program that’s completely taken over my uninstalling tasks.

As any techie knows, most programs do not uninstall completely. Almost all of them leave behind their program folders along with some files and registry keys. Over time this can cause clutter and and even bog down your PC with a bunch of useless registry keys and files to defrag. While inconvenient, it’s easy to open up your Program Files folder and delete leftover folders and files. Registry keys are a whole other story and can be a real pain in the ass to track down. Revo Uninstaller fills this gap.

Revo Uninstaller will run the standard Windows uninstall. After that it will search for leftover files and registry keys. You’ll be shown exactly what’s been found and asked to review them to make sure there’s no false positives. Just give it a glance to make sure there’s no unrelated programs selected and delete them. It even has the ability to uninstall stubborn files before they load at startup.

If you for some reason can’t find something in the installed programs list, or it was named something that’s not obvious, you can use Hunter mode to track it down and get rid of it. Hit the Hunter Mode button and drag the reticule over the offending program. You can point it at desktop shortcuts, start menu shortcuts, system tray icons or over the program’s open window itself. Revo will track down the programs uninstaller or use it’s search function to delete all the programs contents on your PC if the uninstaller fails.

Revo also works great for shitty programs who’s uninstallers simply wont work. Just skip straight to the search function and select them for deletion!

Revo Pico Portable WiFi Internet Radio Review

After reading the reviews here, I was a little worried about purchasing the Revo Pico. But I wanted the portability, and after several years with an excellent WiFi radio, the Acoustic Energy (AE), I took the plunge when an open box item was available from Amazon Warehouse Deals at over 0 less than list. I figured I could always return it if was DOA or whatever, but much to my surprise, this little radio sounds better than expected and works flawlessly in battery mode or plugged in. It is no more difficult to use than the AE, and it actually sounds better! The Revo Pico also has several nice features that the AE doesn’t, like a remote control (works fine), and an iPod/MP3 player input. I am not sure if I just got lucky, but I really like this WiFi radio. I would have given it five stars, but I do agree that the full retail price of 0 is a bit much. However, this radio exceeded my expectations and does not have any of the problems listed by the other reviewers. So, bring down the price, Revo, and you might sell more of these great WiFi portables!

Once a week I spend a whole day working from home, doing academic bits and bobs. This can be exceedingly tedious if you don’t have something that keeps you going. Being the old person that I am and having a rather peculiar taste in music, the Revo is playing 100% Generation DiscoFunk all day. Well, the station is French, so they rather pronounce it ‘foenk’, but you get the gist.

Note the kitchen stains. Tss Tss...

Even the driest meta-analyses can be fun if you have a bit of S.O.S. band in the background. And with the Revo it’s not a problem getting the station everywhere in the house (Internet Radio in the bathtub. The ultimate luxury).

Revo’s nice-looking new retro-styled iPod/iPhone dock might look old, but it’s filled with great features, making this a most interesting dock to have in your home.

The Products

With the advent of OBD-II vehicle control module in the early 1990’s, most domestic vehicle manufacturers installed under-dash ports (“ALDL ports”) which allowed dealers and service techs to “re-flash” the vehicle’s control module to change engine settings without replacing any chip. So today, instead of chips, MADS company primarily sells hand-held tuners which achieve the same dramatic drive-train improvements, without the hassle of popping the hood, pulling out the vehicle control module and replacing a chip. Installation is quick and easy, taking about 1.5 up to 4.5 minutes, depending on the truck model, and requiring no tools or mechanical skills whatsoever.

Finns inget tradigare än när datorn slöar till sig.

Visst tar man hem och installerar en massa program, men använder man alla dessa..
Inte jag i alla fall .. bra att ha tänker jag, men efter en tid så finns det hur mycket
som helst som bara ligger där och slöar upp datorn.
Även om man avinstallerar på vanligt sätt, så finns det alltid dolda filer
gömda “bakom kulliserna”.
Jag prenumererar på Tommy K Johanssons Nyhetsbrev,
där han tar upp väldigt många bra tips.

Jakarta, 15 Oktober 2009 - PT Astra Honda Motor (PT AHM) produsen sepeda motor merek Honda di Indonesia mengklaim, selama kurun waktu sembilan bulan (Januari – September) 2009, Honda telah menguasai 45,8 persen pangsa pasar sepeda motor di tanah air.

PT AHM pun bertekad untuk mempertahankan capaian tersebut hingga akhir 2009 yang tinggal dua setengah bulan lagi. “Caranya dengan berupaya memberikan produk dan teknologi terbaik bagi konsumen di Indonesia,” ujar Miki Yamamoto, Presiden Direktur PT AHM, di Karawang, Jawa Barat, Kamis (15/10).

Miki juga mengaku optimitis target itu akan tercapai, sebab merek (brand) Honda telah dipercaya konsumen Indonesia selama 38 tahun, sejak pabrikan sepeda motor Honda itu beroperasi di Indonesia. Terbukti, kata Miki, sejak beroperasi hingga 9 Oktober lalu, Honda telah membukukan jumlah produksi tertinggi di Indonesia maupun di kawasan Asia Tenggara (Asean) yaitu 25 juta unit.

Hingga saat ini, PT AHM memiliki tiga pabrik dengan total kapasitas produksi mencapai 3 juta unit. Ketiga pabrik itu adalah pabrik di Sunter yang dibangun 1971, di Penggangsaan yang beroperasi sejak 1996, serta pabrik di Cikarang yang mulai dioperasikan 2005 lalu.

Data Asosiasi Industri Sepeda Motor Indonesia (AISI) menyebut, sepanjang Januari – Agustus penjualan sepeda motor di tanah air mencapai 3.718.175 unit. Asosiasi juga memperkirakan penjualan hingga akhir tahun ini akan menurun 11 persen dibanding 2008, sehingga menjadi 5,5 juta unit. Penjualan pada 2008 mencapai 6,2 juta unit.

Firstly, I’d like to say welcome to my blog this is my first post hopefully of many, I never seem to be able to get a blog off the ground but hopefully that will be different with this.

Anyway the point of this post is that I recently have purchased an Acer Revo that I picked up for a very reasonable £169.99 found here , normally I would stay away from anything that has anything to do with Linux but for the price I couldn’t resist. The price of the Windows Vista Home Premium version of the Revo is £234, with the only difference between them other than the OS is that the Vista Revo has 2GB of RAM instead of 1GB found in the Linux Version. So even though I’m what some might call a bit of a Microsoft whore I went for the Linux Version because quite frankly it’s a bargain.

Now I had no intention of keeping just a Linux distribution on the Revo and as I have an MSDN subscription I have access to Windows 7. This meant of course that the 1GB RAM I would be running on might be a little ambitious since I wanted to test out Acers claims of running 1080p videos. My solution to this problem without increasing the cost of the machine was to take my old Eee Pc 1000H and remove the 2GB of RAM. The reason I have an “old” Eee Pc 1000H is a story for another day but to make a long story short I broke it by putting a chair on the screen….

Anyway so since the Eee Pc has only one memory slot I knew I had a single 2GB stick, I assumed that the Revo would have either 1 slot with 1GB or 2 with 512MB in each, I was very pleasantly surprised in this respect with there being 2 slots and only a single 1GB stick of memory in place. In my experience when a manufacture ships a readymade PC it will more than likely have all of its memory slots filled making upgrading a bit of a pain. I was expected then to have a Revo with 2.5GB of memory but instead because of Acer not being cheap I ended up with 3GB in my system.

A big problem with buying the Linux Revo with the intention of upgrading the amount of RAM is that you will instantly void your warranty, there is one screw on the Revo case located at the bottom, to get to this screw you have to rip through a sticker informing you to check your warranty, basically if you don’t know what you are doing and you haven’t upgraded a laptop before… don’t bother spend the extra money and get Vista edition. Once you have unscrewed the case I had to force the top of the Revo off with a screwdriver with some force, not too much to crack the plastic casing but enough to dislodge it. Once you have taken it off once it becomes a lot easier to do it again, but be careful not to crack the plastic.

So with my new RAM installed I decided to setup the rest of my new setup, I had bought the Revo as a computer to use in my bedroom for watching videos, films, listening to music and if I’m working for home a work machine. This was to be what I like to call my “bedroom pc”. So for my new little office/home entertainment system I had bought a new 22″ full HD monitor with a 16:9 resolution another complete bargain, but I will look at this in more detail in another post. Also I had purchased some cheap Logitech 2.1 speakers, that for the price of around £15 I am hugely impressed but they’re not exactly amazing compared to my THX speakers I have in the lounge. Finally the keyboard and mouse, which I wasn’t actually expecting to come with the Revo but had done, and I can’t help but get the feeling from these peripherals that Acer were trying to create the Windows version of a Mac. The mouse is great, its small practical and very responsive, the keyboard on the other hand I can’t decide if I like or not it looks great the buttons feel great but the layout seems a bit strange and I keep missing the return key. I’m used to using a smaller keyboard, I’m writing this now on my netbook but I think maybe when I’m sitting at a desk my brain automatically assumes where the keys are and with the Revo keyboard it gets it wrong. I understand why they decided to make a smaller keyboard, small computer, small keyboard makes sense but its a small desktop and on any desk there’s going to be enough room for a full sized keyboard.

So after quite a lot of time of messing around with hardware I actually came to turning on the Revo. Which when I did it for the first time proved difficult, I don’t know if I’ve knocked something when I opened up the case but if I push the on button on the edge it doesn’t turn on. I have to push further up the button to make it respond, a small criticism of the Revo but one that confused me at first. So once I’d eventually turned on the machine it quickly loaded into a very strange looking book menu. From here you could select a few basic programs there was a browser, a chat client and a few others. This was the Linux distribution that had been supplied with the Revo, and to give it credit it’s very good. If you just want to quickly check something its great and the loading time is virtually nothing.

Of course though this could not be your only OS it’s very basic and others little advantages in the world of home entertainment or development. There is on the initial boot screen a small green button called configuration, when you go to this you have a few options, the most useful two being able to copy the system drivers to a USB drive and to Setup OS. I firstly copied access the drivers as I was unsure if I would lose this partition when I installed Windows 7, then went to install OS wondering what it would do. Amazing this page contained an installer for Windows Vista Home Premium; I decided to go to install it as my attempts to get my removable DVD driver to boot had failed. Once it had loaded the initial files and rebooted I saw on my screen the familiar text asking if I wanted to boot from a removable drive. I hit enter and it booted me into the Windows 7 installer.

I left the installer running and went off to watch a bit of TV, when I got back around 30 minutes later it had completely finished and it was just waiting for me to select the last few options. I completed the setup and booted into windows.

Setting up the hardware on the Revo was fun and something I would have missed out on if I had spent the extra money for the machine with Windows already installed. This is a fantastic little machine and I would recommend it highly to anyone. I will go into details about the Windows setup in my next post but for now I want to go and mess around with the machine some more.

I will say this though if you are looking for a small quite PC that can do pretty much anything if you’re not fussed about games then get a Revo, this cost basically nothing and they can do a hell of a lot.
