Reynolds: Troop announcement causes concern
Questions President’s choice to send fewer troops, delay in decision

CONWAY – Republican United States Senate candidate Col. Conrad Reynolds (U.S. Army, Ret.) issued the following statement in response to reports that President Barack Obama will send a reported 30,000 troops to Afghanistan several months after the request for additional troops was made and at less than the requested level.

“As the Commander-in-Chief, President Obama has determined his war plan for Afghanistan and the outcome will be his responsibility. I have serious questions as to the amount of troops he will send and the lengthy process which led him to this conclusion. I firmly believe this course of action could have been made months ago, but was delayed in order to keep the liberal base of his party in line to ensure forward movement of the health care bill.

Having served at CENTCOM and personally in Afghanistan, I know how hard it is for ground troops to operate in that environment. Additionally, having served in Iraq during the same period as Gen. McChrystal, I am aware of his leadership skills and reputation as a commander of troops. It is for these reasons that I am concerned with the President’s decision and with the length of time it took him to make it.

As Senator, I will ensure that the military and our veterans are not subject to any legislative delays or political gamesmanship. The men and women of America’s armed forces are not pawns, they are the guarantors of our freedoms and are due the appropriate respect.”

About Conrad Reynolds
Conrad Reynolds, a retired Colonel in the United States Army, was born in Little Rock. He is a 1978 graduate of Batesville High School and holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Central Arkansas along with a Master of Business Administration from Touro University. A decorated career intelligence officer who commanded special intelligence units in the war zones of Afghanistan, Iraq and Bosnia, Reynolds retired from the Army on January 1, 2009.

The onslaught of news came with Reynolds explaining how he had already tried on the suit and the incredible experience of it, but he has also slightly explained the story.

Now, don’t get too excited, he hasn’t spoiled much, simply stating that the upcoming film will not be a “labored origin story” and will start off pretty early on with Hal getting the ring. I can honestly make their story choices and everything so much easier for them. Adapt Secret Origin, kill off Atrocitus at the end, that way Blackest Night is not set up. Secret Origin will then introduce Black Hand, as well as a Green Lantern/Mentor Sinestro to the non-comic world, thus establishing how important Sinestro is to Hal rather than just being a villain. Yeah. . .

This is our first episode, recorded in Memphis, TN over the 2009 Thanksgiving holiday. The genesis of this genius, relevant and thoughtful blog/podcast goes something like this: my cousin Michael suggested we host a podcast. Topics would include anything and everything. Looking for a way to pass the time between heaping plates of Thanksgiving leftovers, I said sure.

And with that, “S’up Cuz?” was born.

At least they're not Hannah Montana posters.

A few thoughts on our maiden podcasting voyage:

1. We need a fact checker/producer.

2. Vague pop culture references seem to work for us.

3. I need to plug my live karaoke band more.

The discussion topics range from the manliness of office decor (specifically Michael’s Lucero poster collection seen to the right) to poser Rush fans, graduation gifts, first jobs and Burt Reynolds, with stories of Slash and Ryan Adams sprinkled in there for good measure.

As soon as you can subscribe to the podcast via iTunes, we’ll let you know. Until then, you can subscribe to this blog as a way to waste your day away with updates, new episodes and buffoonish asides. Also, in this episode we referenced that you could probably email us at supcuz@gmail.com. You can’t. That email was already taken, presumably by some other cousin-based blog/podcast. But you can email us at supcuzpodcast@gmail.com.

We’ll post another glorious episode later this week.

Reynolds: Career more important to Lincoln than Arkansans
Calls 60th vote ‘disappointing’, says Arkansas needs someone ‘who will fight for our values’

CONWAY – Republican United States Senate candidate Col. Conrad Reynolds (U.S. Army, Ret.) issued the following statement following Sen. Lincoln’s announcement she will vote to proceed with the Democratic health care bill offered by Sen. Reid, a measure in which Sen. Lincoln cast the 60th – and deciding – vote.

“This is a disappointing moment not only for all Arkansans, but all Americans as Sen. Lincoln has chosen her career in Washington over the values of people who actually live in the state she purportedly ‘represents.’

Sen. Lincoln has declared our voice and values irrelevant to her goal of remaining in the Senate with her vote to proceed on a health care bill which threatens Arkansans with fines and jail if they choose not to purchase health insurance, makes it easier for taxpayer dollars to fund abortions and raises taxes on individuals.

It is now clear that Sen. Lincoln’s chairmanship carried a hefty price tag – one which will be borne by the Arkansas taxpayer, their children and for generations to come.

She has pushed the rock over the cliff which will lead to an avalanche of government intervention in our lives. Arkansans must remember this day when they go to the polls next year to select an opponent who will fight for our values and restore our voice, not just defend or recover them.”

Conrad Reynolds, a retired Colonel in the United States Army, was born in Little Rock. He is a 1978 graduate of Batesville High School and holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Central Arkansas along with a Master of Business Administration from Touro University.
Lincoln’s Next ‘Pay-Back’ Vote
Reynolds calls on all Arkansans to demand Sen. Lincoln vote ‘no’

CONWAY – Republican United States Senate candidate Col. Conrad Reynolds (U.S. Army, Ret.) today called on Sen. Blanche Lincoln to hear the voice of Arkansans and vote against the motion to proceed on Sen. Harry Reid’s health care bill on Saturday:

“Saturday’s vote is another opportunity for Sen. Lincoln to pay back her liberal leaders in Washington for her committee chairmanship and the attack ads of the DSCC. According to NBC this morning, she has already told Sen. Reid how she will vote, and he is proceeding toward Saturday. Why has she not told us? We must not allow her to vote for her interests ahead of the people of Arkansas.

Call her Senate and campaign offices, forward my press release to her staff, email or FAX – I call on every Arkansan to use every communications means available to tell Sen. Lincoln we don’t want this bill to move closer to passage.

According to the Congressional Research Service, 97.6% of the bills which pass the motion to proceed eventually pass the Senate. This is not just a procedural vote. It is a vote which virtually guarantees final passage of a bill which will force Americans to purchase public insurance under the threat of fines and jail time, increase taxes on individual health insurance and allow for the use of taxpayer dollars to fund abortions.

As your United State Senator, I would vote against Saturday’s motion to proceed, send this 2,000-page bill to the compost heap and begin work on a new bill which truly reforms health care while reflecting the conservative values of the people of Arkansas.”

To call Sen. Lincoln and tell her to vote ‘no’ on Saturday’s motion to proceed, please dial:

    * Washington D.C. Office:  Phone: (202)224-4843, Fax: (202)228-1371
* Lincoln Campaign Office: Phone: (501) 537-0190 Fax: (501) 537-0191
* Little Rock Office:  Phone: (501) 375-2993 or toll free 1-800-352-9364, Fax: (501) 375-7064
* Dumas Office:  Phone: (870)382-1023, Fax: (870)382-1026
* Jonesboro Office:  Phone: (870) 910-6896, Fax: (870)910-6898
* Fayetteville Office:  Phone: (479) 251-1224, Fax: (479)251-1410
* Texarkana Office:  Phone: (870) 774-3106, Fax: (870) 774-7627

Sen. Lincoln’s vote is know to Sen. Reid
“In a gaggle with reporters following the news conference (off-camera), Durbin was asked if he knew how Blanche Lincoln will vote on Saturday. Lincoln has been by far the most tight-lipped of the three Democratic holdouts about how she might vote. ‘She’s told Senator Reid,’ Durbin said, but wouldn’t answer the obvious follow-up question. ‘You’ll have to ask Senator Reid.’”
(Ken Strickland, “Durbin: Lincoln has told Reid,” http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2009/11/20/2133102.aspx, NBC News, 11/20/2009)

This afternoon, our Emergency and Disaster Management made history. Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Administrator Craig Fugate conducted a one hour conference call with our EDM students, faculty, and alumni. Administrator Fugate was the first distinguished speaker in our AMU EDM Distinguished Speakers Series. Much work was done behind the scenes to make this happen and had it not been for the efforts of our IEMSA Chapter President, Dorian Young and the Executive Committee, it would not have happened. IEMSA Chapter members submitted questions to Dorian, Professor Kemp, and me over the past two months. After numerous conference calls, questions were selected and asked to Administrator Fugate. We will be airing the teleconference in its entirety in an upcoming broadcast of our Issues and Trends in Emergency Management on AMU Radio. AMU Provost, Dr. Frank McCluskey welcomed Administrator Fugate to this hallmark event. Future guests in our Distinguished Speaker Series includes Dr. Joe Scanon, Professor Emeritus and Dr. Tom Drabek, Professor Emeritus and noted emergency management author. Be sure to keep an eye out in the IEMSA classroom and in our LinkedIn Group.

This is yet another example of the recognition of each of YOU and our EDM program.

Damien Hirst, Requiem, White Flowers and Butterflies, 2008 If Damien Hirst ever produces a painting

Damien Hirst, Requiem, White Flowers and Butterflies, 2008

If Damien Hirst ever produces a painting that comes anywhere close to resembling a Rembrandt I will eat my shoe. The fact that he would even suggest that “anyone can be like Rembrandt” illustrates just how ludicrous he is. I have been taking life drawing classes for a few weeks and my teacher said something in the first class which struck a cord. He said “When we pick up a musical instrument and play for the first time we don’t expect a full sonata to come out. We have to practice at it. So why to we expect to be able to draw something perfectly on the first attempt?” He’s so right. We have to work at it. And I have always been a great believer that we can all improve at something with a little effort, whether playing piano, dancing, cooking, doing maths or drawing. But some of us will simply become better or even good whilst others will become great. The works displayed in Hirst’s most recent exhibition at the Wallace Collection suggest that unfortunately he falls into the former category. They were only okay.

All the familiar identifiers of Hirst’s oeuvre were referred to in the paintings – a menagerie of sharks, skulls and butterflies, with references to mortality (both his and ours), all superimposed on a grid of white spots and often featuring the spidery white lines one might see in a work by Francis Bacon, one of Hirst’s heroes. The works are flat, repetitive and unimaginative. There were one or two I could bear to have on my wall. One, a single lonesome skill, whose bald head shone iridescently off the dark blue background from different viewpoints. The other, a large canvas bursting with white roses and butterflies (painted rather than squashed). The works are of course all blue in a very contrived homage to Picasso. It’s like D.H. is some child in the artists’ playground, jumping and screaming “I want a blue-period too. I want something for people to remember me by.” Don’t worry Damien. We will all remember you.

I don’t respect Damien for his personality or for his talent (or lack thereof), but to his credit, if there is one thing he is great at doing it’s getting attention. And as for the bad reviews, he shares Andy Warhol’s opinion on the matter: “weigh them, don’t read them.”

Frans Hals, The Laughing Cavalier, 1624

They just don’t make them like they used to. For me, the best part of No Love Lost was that I got to visit my old favourites at the Wallace Collection again (in fact, visiting figures have doubled since Hirst’s show opened). Fragonard’s dreamy girl on The Swing, André Charles Boulle’s impressive marquetry and Joshua Reynolds’ intimate portraits. And, as Brian Sewell said in his review, he has finally discovered what Frans Hals’ iconic Laughing Cavalier is laughing at. It’s Damien Hirst.

No Love Lost, Blue Paintings by Damien Hirst is on at the Wallace Collection until 24 January. Admission free.

Dryland's a myth! Or is it...? (It's not. Spoiler alert.)

A trip down junior high memory lane has led me to do another Twice Baked Potatoes quickie review. This time I’m watching “Waterworld” starring Mr. Kevin Costner as the lead role, also known as The Mariner. The Mariner is along the lines of Mel Gibson’s Mad Max, although Costner plays him as a Dazed, Creepily Quiet Max. There are other actors in the film, but none of them matter whatsoever. Not even the little girl. Sorry. She’s little more than a plot device. The only other performance worth noting is Dennis Hopper as the villain. Hopper was enjoying his mid-90’s Renaissance, where he was more or less doing variations on his performances in “Speed” and “True Romance”. Walleyed heroism versus wily psychosis. Great. Casting. All. Around. Extra special shoutout to awesome that-guy actor Kim Coates as the coolest pseudo-Irish, would-be rapist pirate this side of The Atoll.

To the film’s credit, every cent of the $180 Million price tag shows up on screen. Yet for all that money, would it have killed the production designer to splash on some more colors other than various shades of fecal brown and rust red? Every single room looks like a serial killer’s cleanup shack after it’s been wiped down for evidence. Costner’s sleepwalker acting choices actually fit the film in that respect: Expensive, intentional, and completely boring.

The action, thankfully, is the best part. The setpieces are large and dynamic, chock full of explosions, goop, and blood. More goop than blood. I also appreciate that there are a lot of sets and practical effects. Today, adjusted for quality, this film would have been a CGI cheapfest and most likely have been a SyFy channel clunker starring Lorenzo Lamas. The film also doesn’t waste time with logic. It challenges you to accept the world it’s presenting, and there are so many questions that could be asked, but why bother? It’s an B-action flick masquerading as a summer sci-fi epic. I can forgive the illogics, but where did they get all of the bullets? What about the airplane? Airplane fuel? These things take real science, not just welding torches. I’m just saying.

If this flick is on during late night, it’s not a bad way to spend the hours between 2am and 4am. I just hope that the sequel is called “Desertworld”. You think I’m crazy? They’ll make a sequel to anything. Anything. Just give it 10 more years. 15 tops.

Dear AMU Student, Alumni and Faculty Colleagues,

Tomorrow we celebrate Veteran’s Day. From across the United States, families will be attending parades and observances. While we are with our families and friends, let us not forget the sacrifice of the men and women who are serving our country, protecting it from those who wish to do us harm. Remember, while we are enjoying a cold beer and hot dog, their reality is a lonely patrol through a Baghdad slum… protecting an airfield in Balad… or on coastal watch duty in the Persian Gulf… These FINE men and women are protecting our right to celebrate and remember those who served and protected our GREAT Nation. The recent and horrible attack against our soldiers at Ft. Hood reminds us all of the ever present threat our men and women in uniform face each and every day. The fact this dastardly attack occurred within the United States by a fellow soldier makes this Veteran’s Day more sorrowful.

Let us not forget the meaning of Veterans Day. Officially, it commemorates the armistice that ended World War I in 1918. In 1954 it was renamed from Armistice Day and given the added significance of honoring veterans. Today, it is a time to pay homage to the men and women who have served our GREAT Nation. However you decide to celebrate this important day, be sure to stop and remember the men and women who fought and died for our country. In many ways, their fight has helped create the freedom that allows us to enjoy days like this. Remember, freedom does not come free and servicemen and women who died in defending freedom died so we can all be free from oppression and tyranny.

To our Students, Alumni and Faculty who are wearing the uniform of our great Nation… thank you for your sacrifice to protect all of us.

Happy Veterans Day everyone…

Colleagues, Now that we have all returned from the International Association of Emergency Manager

Colleagues,

Now that we have all returned from the International Association of Emergency Manager’s Conference and listened to outstanding educational session on everything from Mitigation and Exercise Evaluation to EOC Management and NIMS Multi-Agency Coordination Systems, we all are enthusiastic to start making a difference. Many of us in emergency management have attended conferences and returned home, motivated to make changes and improve processes. The unfortunate reality is often we discover that some do not want these changes and work against you or fail to support your ideas. There are others, however, who are in a position where proactive changes or improvements can be made. The important thing to remember, whether you can or cannot make improvements, never lose sight of the emergency management mission.

It is important to remember this year’s theme– “Emergency Management: United We Stand” We must remember that we have a wide network of students, professional civilian and military emergency managers, and faculty that are YOUR resources. The value of our EDM group can be demonstrated by the membership of over 500 students, faculty and alumni in our EDM Group on LinkedIn. Remember THAT group! You have an unbelievable resource at your fingertips. Many of our members have likely been where each of you are now. You can benefit from their collective experiences. As demonstrated at this year’s conference, AMU EDM students, alumni, and faculty DO STAND TOGETHER!!!

Next year the IAEM 58th Annual Conference & EMEX will be held in beautiful San Antonio, Texas from 30 October to 4 November 2010. The IAEM theme in 2010 is “Talk the Talk—now, Walk the Walk…. ”. How fitting a title and theme! As AMU students, alumni and faculty–we are in a perfect position to “Walk the Walk.” Look at the Student Region officer elections this year…. AMU student Nancy Harris is President, AMU Student Mike Kelley is 1st Vice President, and AMU Student Jeannine “Jet” Holt is Secretary!! Colleagues–these members are the incoming policy makers on the Student Region! It is important that we provide them with meaningful and substantive recommendations to bolster the study and science of emergency management. The fact that our IEMSA received the “Student Chapter of the Year“, under the leadership of Dorian Young, speaks volumes of each one of YOU!! Likewise, the fact that our entire EDM academic program–bachelors and masters–received the “Academic Award” speaks volumes of each one of US.

So, here is the challenge…. Make a difference, challenge the status-quo, make noise, do what ever you can to increase the compendium of knowledge in emergency management. If someone tells you no, find another way– be the voice of your community or area. Remember, you are studying emergency management to make a difference.

By Calvin Palmer

A gunman opened fire in an office building in downtown Orlando this morning, killing two people and wounding 17 others.

Orlando Police named the suspect as Jason Rodriguez, 40. He is believed to be driving a silver, 2002 Nissan SUV with tag number D11UXR.

Rodriguez is a former employee of Reynolds, Smith & Hill, a transportation consulting firm, with headquarters in Jacksonville, Florida. The shootings took place in the firm’s Orlando office in the Legions Place building.

“We understand the shootings did take place in our office,” company spokesman Ken Jacobson said. “People were shot in our offices.”

Police believe Rodriguez is still in the area and armed.

Bodies were found on the 12th and 8th floor of the 16-floor building north of Colonial Drive in the downtown area.

Workers have barricaded themselves inside their offices.

“We’ve got everybody in one office, with the door barricaded with a chest of drawers. There are about 20 of us in here. We’re scared,” said one woman who did not want to be named.

“We’re watching TV, trying to see what is going on, but we really don’t know. We’re scared. We’re safe right now, but we’re scared,” she said.

Roads in downtown Orlando have been blocked off by police and businesses have been evacuated.

2:19 – SUSPECT IN CUSTODY

One person was killed in a shooting at a downtown Orlando office this morning. According to Orlando Fire Department dispatch and Orlando police, at least six to eight other people were shot and transported to ORMC (Orlando Regional Medical Center.)

The two dead people were found on the eight and tenth floors of the office building. The shooting happened at 1000 Legion Place at the Gateway Center.

WESH 2 reporter Gail Paschall-Brown, who is at the scene on the ground, said that 15 employees came out of the building very distraught. She spoke with one who said that a former employee came into the office who hadn’t worked at the company in over a year. Police have now named the suspect, but he remains at large. 40-year-old Jason Rodriguez is the man police are looking for. According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, he is described as a light-skinned Hispanic male wearing blue jeans and a Polo-style shirt. He is believed to be driving a silver, 2002 Nissan SUV with tag number D11UXR.

“At 11 o’clock, we received a call about shots fired at the 1000 block of Legions Place,” Sgt. Barb Jones said early this afternoon. “We deployed our active shooter teams.”

Rodriguez may have been a former employee of Reynolds, Smith & Hill, a transportation consulting firm. Police and Ken Jacobson, a spokesman for the company in its Jacksonville, Florida headquarters, confirmed the shooting took place in the consulting firm’s office. “We understand the shootings did take place in our office,” Jacobson said. “People were shot in our offices.”

♦

Apparently, Jason Rodriguez drove to his mother’s apartment. When she watched the story unfold on TV, she quietly called 911 to report that her son was there. SWAT personnel rammed his vehicle and entered the apartment, where he was taken into custody very quietly and very successfully.

Anyone who spends any time with me knows that putting or keeping my neighbor working is important to me. The outsourcing of America has left us with little more than a bunch of service industries. We need to make things, put pride back into the made in America brand. As I find companies that work hard to put America to work I will share them with you. I will share companies that are working to change the footprint we leave on the planet. I hope you will all take the time to support these companies and in turn put your neighbor and mine back to work!

When you reach for your next roll of aluminum foil grab the Reynolds!

My family was a supporter of Reynolds for years. This foil literally saved our familie’s mobile home when the kids were all little. I had left some cupcakes on the stove and went off to work. Late that morning the call came to work saying the house was on fire. I raced home expecting to find little more than a shell. To my surprise when I turned the corner our home was still there.

I had put the cupcakes on a Corel plate with Reynolds wrap over the top and placed them on the stove. Our dog had tried to get a treat and turned on the burner under the plate. The strength of the plate and wrap was enough to hold the fire inside. The cupcakes burned to ash, the smoke setting off our fire alarm that got our neighbors attention, who in turn called 911. Yes it was a string of events that saved the home, but we were so thankful to Reynolds for the durability of their product we wrote them and have remained faithful customers. The foil from that day is framed and hung in the kitchen of each home to remind us just how lucky we got.

When I started to look in my cupboards and drawers to see what was made here and what was imported I found those great words on my Reynolds wrap, Made in America! The best news of all came from Reynolds this past year. 100% recycled aluminum foil!

So next time you need some aluminum foil please grab the Reynolds, you will get a quality product. It may cost a penny or two more, but it is worth it for the strength of the product alone. Plus the people who will have jobs this Christmas in Richmond, VA will be thankful and so will our economy. We can’t spend if we don’t work. Think about it…

Yes, another Castle post. I just had to squee with delight when I tuned into Castle to see Nathan Fillion spin his gun in his “Space Cowboy” costume with Alexis’ comment of “Didn’t you wear that 5 years ago?” and “Shouldn’t you get over it?” It makes a Browncoat proud. Okay well, giddy–it’s a fan girl thing. The Buffy comment in the next scene was not lost in me either.

The whole Vampire mystery wasn’t really a surprise, but it was definitely a fun Halloween themed spin. This was actually a better mystery than most. It took me a tiny bit longer to figure it out before the characters, but I still skated it in there.

The costumes were all stunning, especially Edgar Allen Poe. That wig was amazing. And how adorably appropriate that Alexis was a faerie princess? I’m so happy they’ve kept the relationship between Rick and Alexis working so well. I hope they never decide to “mix it up” for the drama of a teenager. Anyway, over all it was great fun to watch, even with the tell tale sculpt of the Cinema Secrets werewolf face on the slain Damon–or whatever his real name was.

Speaking of CS, Vampires, and Werewolves… it’s time for me to head to work. Halloween’s not over until next week after all. Boo!

A few years ago, Harold Reynolds was canned from ESPN’s Baseball Tonight staff for an alleged “pattern of sexual harassment”, which Reynolds described as a misunderstanding and a simple case of happy hands. Now its starting to look like that sort of thing runs in the Baseball Tonight family — well, at least something like that. Reports out of ESPN today say 46-year-old analyst Steve Phillips has been suspended for an affair with a 22-year-old co-worker, shown at left. Is that worth risking your job and ruining your marriage for (his wife has filed for divorce)? Well, we’ll let Phillips decide that on his own.

But wait, the story gets even more interesting: Apparently the woman Phillips allegedly had the affair with, Brooke Huntley, is borderline insane, or Marbury-esque, so they say. According to the New York Post, she showed up at Phillips’ house recently to leave a letter for his wife, detailing their affair and pleading with her to divorce him so they could live happily ever after. As proof she’s legit, Hundley described a pair of birthmarks in Phillips’ crotchal region. Nice touch. You can read the letter here.

On thing is for sure — Phillips, who served as general manager of the New York Mets from 1997-2003, has proven himself to be even a worse judge of talent than J.P. Ricciardi. Good luck with everything, Steve!
