Dr. Gracia is participating in the Bodytite IRB study for body contouring. The Bodytite device is made by Invasix, a company bringing new technology to us designed to compete with Laser Lipolysis devices such as Smart Lipo and Slim Lipo. A key difference is the temperature regulation in the device to protect the skin. The device uses radio frequency energy to heat the skin to help shrink it (contract, tighten) and also melt fat as the fat is aspirated. This is to cause less trauma to the tissues, less bleeding and less bruising to help decrease the recovery time.

Contact our office today at (817) 336-9450 to see if you would be a candidate for this procedure.

HOW IT WORKS:
RF energy travels from an internal electrode, which is simultaneously aspirating the coagulated tissue, to an external electrode, resulting in coagulation of adipose, vascular and fibrous tissue as well as heating the entire soft-tissue matrix. The coagulated and liquefied tissue is aspirated while heating of the soft issue matrix and subdermal tissue results in significant body tightening and recontouring. BodyTite provides gentle, outpatient treatment with improved safety and efficacy compared to other liposuction methods. Information courtesy of Invasix

The Areas most commenly done are the abdomen, neck, lower and upper back, thighs, and arms.

Schedule an appointment if you would like to see if you are a good candidate for this study. We look forward to assisting you with all of your cosmetic needs.

My head is slightly tilted and you can see the curve at the top of my nose. Also you can see that the tip is extended and my nostrils are too larger. There is also a little bone between my nose and lip.Surgeon plan: Remove hump, reduce nostril size, remove little bone between nose and lip, lift tip.

I have a bit of makeup here. As you can see, my nose had a bit of a crow look to it. It was very pointy. Notice the distance between the tip of my nose and lip. This is one of the bigger changes in the after shots. Also there was a slight asymmetry in my nose.Surgeon plan: Remove asymmetry. Lift nose tip.

During the first week, when I still had my cast on. As you can see, there is no bruising underneath my eyes. This is what I looked like pretty much from day 1. There is some puffiness to my face, but it is very minimal compared to many images I have seen of other people. I was very lucky! The first thing you can notice here already is the distance between my nose tip and my top lip. It is much larger and I am hoping most of this is due to swelling and temporary.

19th January 2012.This is 8 days after my surgery. The cast has been removed and my nose has tape all over it. The tape is skin coloured so it blends in with my face making the overall image look a bit silly. The tape is used to keep the swelling down.

20th January, 2011. This is the first time I took off my tape. My nose is very swollen and makes my overall nose look round, fat and ogre like. The distance between the tip of my nose and my lip looks slightly smaller, but not much.

25th January 2011, 2 weeks after my surgery. You can see the swelling has greatly reduced in my nose, as well as my cheeks. Although I think I am slightly pouting in this photo so it is hard to tell. I am waiting for the fatness in my nose to disappear, as my nose used to be MUCH thinner than it is now. The tip of my nose is still very round and swollen.

27th January 2012.The bottom of my nose has a slight reduction in swelling, but the top of my nose now is fatter again. To me this looks VERY swollen still. I may also have some makeup on. Again, still waiting. As you can see, even though it has been a bit over 2 weeks, there is still a LOT of swelling. This is why I have been feeling quite disappointed looking in the mirror. It just looks kind of strange.

Also, swelling changes day to day so if you can help it, don’t look every day. I like my nose much better in the previous shot, but for now I still just have to wait.

Also, i have been putting ice on my nose a few times, daily. I hope this will reduce the swelling further.

30th January 2012. Side view. On the side you can see a drastic improvement. The nostrils are smaller, the tip is lifted (but not so much that its miss piggy), and the bump has been removed. It is still very swollen, but you can see the outcome of the surgery better on the side.

30th January 2012. Side view. My head again is slightly tilted in this image. Again you can see the nostril is smaller, and hump is removed, etc. However, there is still some swelling so the nose is a bit too round for my liking. I am hoping it settles down a little so that its not DEAD straight at the top and then rounds off the way it is in this photo.2.5 weeks and still waiting…

After the second week was over, I was allowed to take the tape off during the day, however, I was instructed to continue taping up the nose at night. I was also advised to keep my tape on for as much of the day as I could, so I only took the tape off if I had to go somewhere.

My nose was still very swollen so I did not feel very comfortable going out in public. One thing that I also did not expect was the constant dripping from my nose (not blood but clear). Nonetheless, it made it very difficult to go out in public. I could not blow my nose and couldn’t use tissues. My only means of clearing my nose were cotton buds. Furthermore, most of the time my nose really wasn’t dripping, but the sensation of that was there. This caused me a lot of stress if I had to meet up with anyone or see anyone and I carried a small mirror with me at all times to check on my nose.

The tip of my nose also felt quite strange. It felt a bit like rubber and some little parts of my tip seemed to have no feeling at all. My top lip had also not been functioning. The nurse told me that this was normal and the feeling would return soon. However, for now, my lip did not move with the rest of my face and looked quite odd.

During week 3 was the first time that I finally went out of the house without my tape on. I was very nervous. I put a lot of makeup on and tried to narrow my nose by putting darker shades on the side of my nose. The makeup did not work very well with the glue left over from the tape (and the glue was very difficult to take off. Side note, I only realised later that the glue could be removed with alcohol swipes). After I put on all my makeup and looked in the mirror, I can say that i was quite disappointed. My nose was very fat and I looked very weird. When I talked, my top lip didn’t move and I was suddenly very aware of how thin the top lip was. The space between my top lip and my nose had also greatly increased since my nose no longer hooked downwards. The space was probably exaggerated by swelling but it made me feel very uncomfortable. It looked like the bottom of my nose was a very bad photoshop job. I finally worked up the courage to go to the party. My friends and my boyfriend all told me it looked fine and it didn’t look swollen. I didn’t know whether they were being nice and polite, or whether it did actually look ok to them. My boyfriend spent a while reassuring me so he must have been truthful. However, all this doesn’t help when you look in the mirror and know what you see. So week 3 I was not happy. I went out twice to parties, and both times I was just worried about the dripping feeling in my nose and could not relax.

Two of my friends who I had not told yet did not notice. This made me feel slightly better. My goal was to look better without people really realising what had changed. So far, I looked different without people realising, but I wasn’t looking any better.

Although I kept telling myself to reserve judgment and just wait because my nose was still swollen, this really is a harder that one would imagine. The more I looked at myself in the mirror as each day progressed, the more disappointed i felt. My nose was just not getting any narrower, and when I looked at my face as a full picture, I just wasn’t seeing what I wanted to see. That being said, let me assure you, I did not have unrealistic expectations, but my nose did look very fat and this was not something I wanted to see by the third week. I imagined the swelling would be much less than it was.

I also spent most of my time in bed on my computer. There really isn’t much you can do for the first 3 weeks. All these little things were getting in the way, like the tape, or the dripping feeling. I knew that at the end of the day, all I could do apart from complain, was wait.

The only new experience during week 2 was that I was allowed to take off the tape myself and have a quick look at how my nose was going. I had to ensure that I taped it back up soon after. I tried to do this as minimally as possible during week 2. The first time I took my tape off, I was in the shower. I was so worried about doing something bad to my nose that I stood in the shower for probably half an hour, slowly peeling the tape off as gently as I could. Once I did this, I took a look at myself in the mirror and felt slight disappointment. My nose was still huge and looked very strange and round at the tip. I knew there was no point looking at it just yet because it was still very swollen and it would be hard to see the final product. I tried to not get too emotional by what I was seeing just yet.

The first week went by relatively well compared to what I had expected. The only problem I had for the first few days was getting up and moving around. I felt very weak and would quickly feel faint/nauseas just from a walking from my bed to the bathroom. However, with each day I regained more strength, felt better and could eat more than the day before.

One of the worst things about rhinoplasty operations is that you have to lie on elevated pillows (at a 45 degree angle), on your back, when you sleep. I have been told that I have to do this for 6 weeks. For the first week, my back hurt so much from lying in this position. I was surprised because I thought my neck would suffer more. I also quickly realised that if I had one of those aeroplane pillows around my neck, it would make it a lot easier to keep my head upright. Nonetheless, this was and still is, the worst part of the rhinoplasty procedure.

During the first week, I bumped my nose a couple of times, VERY gently, but even so, this would immediately cause me to panic that I had ruined my nose. You just can’t help that kind of thing when you have put in so much time, money, and mental and emotional resources into it.

Taking the cast off and removing the stitches

After a week, I returned to have my cast taken off and the stitches taken out. This was probably the most painful part of the whole rhinoplasty procedure. That being said, it wasn’t VERY painful. It took a lot longer to take the cast off than I imagined. First they took the cast off, and then the tape. Once they were done, they told me it looked like a great nose and handed me a mirror to have a look. The most ironic part of this was that the mirror was an enlarging mirror, so when I looked at my nose, it looked massive and disproportional. I made no comment and decided to reserve judgment, however, I could see that my nose was very swollen. They showed me how to tape my nose, and taped it up for me again and told me to continue taping for another week. They told me I had several dissolvable stitches that would come out themselves later. Honestly, I felt relieved that they wouldn’t be pulling anything more out of nose. That was the last of it.

As this my first surgery and I was quite nervous, I tried to not think about it as the surgery date

As this my first surgery and I was quite nervous, I tried to not think about it as the surgery date drew closer. I made sure to follow my pre-surgery instructions, which included taking vitamin C and bio-zinc (a mixture of zinc, vitamin A, and other stuff). Something that wasn’t mentioned to me but I thought of as well after doing a little bit of research was that I probably shouldn’t drink alcohol for a little while before the surgery. So my last drink was on new years eve and I made sure not to drink again.

I was most worried about fasting and not drinking from midnight before the surgery. When I get nervous, my mouth goes dry and I was really worried that that would happen before the surgery. But it didn’t.

I was also really worried that something would happen during the surgery. The doctor told me that as I am young, fit and healthy, the chances of complications would be virtually zero. But I was still afraid.

My surgery was set for 9:00am. When I came in, I had to change into a some plastic like material and I could put a robe on top. After that I waited around for about an hour before the surgeon and anaesthetist had a quick chat to me. It felt like I had been waiting forever, and yet I still felt it was too soon when they finally took me in to the surgery room. I was so nervous. Then suddenly I felt a wave of relaxation come over me, the room around me began to blur and before I knew it I was dreaming about cars or something of the sort.

The first 48 hours

When I woke up, someone was speaking to me, and the first thing I remember saying was “oh right, I just had surgery. I forgot about that”. It seems silly now, but when I woke up I thought I was still in my bed. The nursed asked me if I was in pain and I told her that I just felt a bit of stinging on the tip of my nose. She must have injected something into me because I felt no pain after that. After some time had passed, the nurse helped me walk towards the recovery room, where I was allowed to sit on a very comfortable reclining arm chair. I was also given some water to drink. I was very relieved to know that I had woken up and was alive, with no complications. However, once I knew that I had survived, my worries moved on to how the surgery went, what I looked like, and how I felt. Once I was awake enough, I walked to the bathroom and had a look at myself in the mirror. I had no bruising. I had seen so many images of people after rhinoplasty who had heavy black and blue bruising under their eyes. I was shocked to see nothing of the sort. I was given ice cold wet cloths to put over my eyes and was told to continue with the ice for 48 hours. My nose was taped up and a cast was moulded onto the top of my nose. I also had a little tube in my nose, so surprisingly I could breathe very slightly through my nose. After some more time had passed, my bf was allowed to drive me home, where my parents had already set up a bed with elevated pillows. I was given pain killers – panadeine forte to take every 4-6 hours to help control the pain (which I was not feeling and did not feel throughout the whole initial recovery process). The only sensation I felt was pressure in my nose. There was packing in my nose which made it virtually impossible to breathe but the little breathing tubes helped a little. I spent the first day lying in bed, keeping cold cloths over my eyes and resting. I also found it hard to move around. When I first came out of surgery I felt shaky and not quite steady on my feet. This passed in time.

The one thing I had not expected was that I found it very hard to pee after. I think it was the effect of the anaesthetic, but it got me very worried and nervous. I would sit on the toilet for 20 minutes to try and pee and it was still very difficult. Thankfully, by the next morning, this feeling had pretty much disappeared.

I was also given a cloth that was held under my nose to pick up and blood that was dripping out my nose. Every time I would gently pull this cloth away to look at how much blood there was on it, I felt queasy from the sensation in my nose. I think my nose felt better with the pressure of the cloth.

Although many people complain of dry mouth, I did not actually experience this for the first 2 days. I think this was mostly due to me drinking a LOT of fluids in the first 2 days. Surprisingly, this actually helped to the point where I could sleep for the first 2 days without waking up with an extremely dry mouth. The dry mouth actually came later when I started eating more and drinking less.

48 hours later, I had to return to have my packing removed. I was looking forward to this the most because I really wanted to know whether I would be able to breathe through my nose. The surgeon had also performed a septoplasty (where my deviated septum was corrected). I didn’t even know I had a deviated septum until they told me after the surgery. So I was also looking forward to seeing if I would be breathing any differently to before.

Having your nasal packing removed is not the most comfortable feeling in the world. It did not hurt, but I felt a lot of pressure when the nurse was pulling it out. It was probably one of the most relieving feelings when I had known that all the packing was removed. And as soon as it was, I suddenly felt like it was SO easy to breathe that it scared me. In fact, the sensation of free air was so strong that I didn’t want to breathe through my nose at all! It just felt too weird, too strong and too different. I told the nurse straight away that for some reason I was finding this feeling very uncomfortable. She assured me that this is normal and many people feel that way. I wasn’t really given a chance to get used to it however, because my nose soon swelled up inside and it was hard to breathe again. I resumed breathing through my mouth.

In five days, it will have been ten months since my surgery. As I’ve been saying all along, I feel like my nose has been too swollen, and I still think it is! I went to see my doc this past Friday for a post op visit and to receive a steroid shot to help relieve some of the swelling. I did research on it and read that some ps’s will administer a shot right after cast removal and read that it only provides temporary relief and that eventually it will come back because the nose is still healing. The patient will become upset and will want another one because you can’t go from no swell to swell without it upsetting you. So the patient will probably have a several more while healing, and this can cause skin thinning and can also cause atrophy. I read on www.realself.com under the questions that other surgeons will answer that the best time for a steroid shot is after seven months and generally before one year. Most of the swelling (70%) takes place during the first few weeks (not for everyone, though including myself) and towards the end, about the last 30% will go down. Anyhow, the steroid shot is there to help people with swelling issues get the last of the swelling to go away. It takes a few weeks to see results, but I already see some differences than before. I go back in six weeks and she said I might need one more shot.

So the shot wasn’t too pleasant, but what shot is? The shot didn’t hurt much, so don’t worry. She bent the needle at an angle so that it wouldn’t hit the bone. My curious boyfriend asked why it was bent, so that’s why I know. I wouldn’t have asked, so I’m glad he did because now I can write about why lol. Anyhow, she injected it slowly. She said I would be swollen and I was. My boyfriend said blood gushed out from where the injection site was, so I guess that’s normal. I could feel a little ball where it was injected and that lasted for about a day. It made my nose smooth and swollen at the bridge. It looked better today (Tuesday) but I did notice my right side is still more swollen than the left. Either way, though it doesn’t bother me much even if stays this way, although I am sure it isn’t because my right side is still tender and has been since surgery. I know it’s just taking longer to heal. My nose is currently a little bruised but fading and it hurt to scrunch my nose or wiggle it. It’s less now, but still a little sore. Pictures!

The thoughts Deciding to have cosmetic surgery is not something you decide overnight. If you do, it

The thoughts

Deciding to have cosmetic surgery is not something you decide overnight. If you do, it isn’t for you. I had always been relatively happy with my physical appearance, but I was always bothered by my nose. I learned to smile correctly and pose at the right angle in photos, to wear my hair the right way for my nose not to stand out, and I wore a lot of makeup to try to bring more attention to my other facial features like my eyes. When I did all this, I was not ugly. Not even close. But I was tired. Tired of always thinking of new things, not for fun, but to try to find a new way to hide my nose amongst my other features. It isn’t that easy when you have a very pointy, angular, hooked nose. I had always seen it as a defect to my face the same way others may see a large coloured birthmark on their body as a defect. I learned to live with it for many years and never thought that I could get rid of it. However, as I grew older and saved up more money, I started wondering, what if I did have a different nose? What if I could walk around with my hair tied in a bun and not feel self conscious that I looked like a man? What if my face could look more feminine? After all, behind my nose I knew I had a pleasant face and nice eyes. These thoughts began sinking in and believe me, I thought about this for weeks, for months. For a year, I seriously considered having plastic surgery. The longer I thought about it, the more I became convinced that this wasn’t some passing phase. That I truly wanted this.

Reactions

Telling people that I was considering this surgery was not an easy task. See, there are social rules about this thing that stop people from saying the truth or even thinking for themselves. It is embedded in their mind that there is only one way to respond. The polite and conservative way. So the first few reactions I received were the same, “No way! You don’t need it!” or “You look good already!” or “Isn’t that REALLY risky? Are you sure you want to risk it?”. My favourite one was “I’ve never noticed anything wrong with your nose. Really? There is something wrong? Like what do you mean?”. People staring right at my face and pretending to be blind when it was just so clear. I understand though. It isn’t politically correct to say to someone “oh yeah you would look better with a nose job”. Thankfully however, there were a few people who were reasonable enough to discuss the issue with me not brainlessly.

By the time that I had decided that I would be having the surgery, many of my friends had already become more ok with the idea. I told many of my close friends and I knew that although many did not agree with me, they would be there for me while I go through this procedure.

Surprisingly, my family was the most supportive and positive in their reactions. However, the most difficult person to tell this to was my dad, who is very conservative and hates physical changes including hair cuts, hair colouring, makeup, eyebrow waxing, fake tans, … the list goes on. However, while the rest of my family was panicking that he would have a heart attack, I had prepared myself to discuss this with him in a rational and controlled manner. Surprisingly, it went much better than I thought. While he disagreed greatly, I communicated very well to him that I had already made up my mind and he reluctantly did not intervene.

The decision was made, the date was set, and I began preparing for my very first surgery. I was nervous.

Welcome

Welcome to my rhinoplasty blog – a place where I can share all my past and future experiences with rhinoplasty (cosmetic surgery on the nose). I hope that my more positive outlook will be helpful to those who have read too many horror stories and negative comments. I also hope this blog influences others with positive experiences to share their story as well. I know that when I was looking for information and support, I would have really appreciated a blog like this. The least I can do is provide this for future rhinoplasty patients.

Please note, I am still early on in my recovery, and I have made the decision to not provide images at this point in time, however, I may well upload them later (perhaps with my eyes covered so that I cannot be identified). I may consider sending images for personal requests. I am also not going to disclose my surgeon at this current point in time.

That being said, I hope you enjoy reading my stories I will start from before my surgery and lead up to now, and then I will continue updating as the weeks progress. If there are any topics in particular that you want me to go over, feel free to message me and let me know.

Happy reading!

Why do people have rhinoplasty? To make it more symmetrical, straightened, smoothed-out, or cartilage-enhanced, reshaped at the tip or narrowed at the bridge. The current face of rhinoplasty, a procedure no longer limited to a stereotypical clientele of Long Island girls who get nose jobs for their Sweet Sixteens, is one that people of all ages can experience to balance their face.

There’s no longer just one ideal appearance for the nose. There are many definitions of beauty now. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 252,000 people had rhinoplasties in 2010. Of those, 25 percent were men and 57 percent were over age 29. We experience patients coming in who still want to look like themselves. They don’t want to look like they had their nose “done”.

I particularly love the cover-up. Kerry wants us to believe he was playing ice hockey when he “broke his nose.” Yeah, okay. I know he’s a hockey fan, but does he play bare-headed? Did he get into a fight on the ice where they ripped off their helmets and he got socked in the face? Highly suspect. More likely, Kerry just got home from a little “rejuvenating” treatment at his favorite spa. You tell me what you think. Here are some nose job bruises to compare.

His Own Hands by Rhinoplasty I’m surprised I didn’t notice this story sooner. It’s so fabulously written and full of *feelings*. It’s another fic written after episode 32. There is angst, sadness, and smut. But more importantly, there is this *dreamy* flashback of the Zoo that I just *adored*. A lot of authors like to portray Saya as an innocent girl during the 1830s. But this fic isn’t shy about exploring her sexuality, or the brush ups she and Hagi must have had back then. An intriguing and wonderful read!<3

Rating: M

Pairing: Hagi/Saya

I remember when hard core dropped. 1996. “Queen Bitch” & “Not Tonite”, were my favorite songs from that album. I never thought kim was a bad looking girl. To me, she looked like 1 of those around the way type chicks. Not the girl next door pretty look. More of the tough sexy homegirl look.

My earliest memory of seeing latoya jackson was in the,”Heart Don’t Lie” video. Her nose was just right then. To be honest, I do think she needed rhinoplasty in the first place lol. But I think she should have stopped at the 1st or maybe 2nd procedures.

I think patti’s surgical makeover was a lot more subtle. I don’t think her nose was this big though in the, “love, need & want you” days.

Well it’s really more like 9, but I’m going to save month 9 for a better update after I get a corticosteroid shot to help with relieving swelling. Some new things I have experienced are that having a cold/flu is TERRIBLE for your new nose, the cold weather is AMAZING for your new nose, and that your nose keeps getting better and better. I had a cold for the first time since surgery back in April and I could not believe how swollen my nose got from being sick. It made my bridge really smooth and round, which is nothing like how it is when I am not sick. It is not fun and I got scared and called my doctors office to ask the nurse if this was normal and she said it is totally normal and that my nose will go back to normal, and she was right. But it was still scary looking at a nose that looked like it did when I was 3 months post op. So if you get sick and your nose looks fat and swollen, fear not! It will go back to normal. Just ice your nose and be patient. The cold winter weather, well, as cold as winter can be in Southern California anyway, has made my nose look really nice and skinny! I am enjoying being outside for that very reason. Here are a few pictures over the last month or so.

Last month before I went to a wedding.

This was early on during the day and I actually don't think my nose looks particularly defined here, but still looks good.

I don’t know if maybe my nose looks different just because someone else took the picture and the quality is better. The majority of my pictures are taken on my laptop, so I don’t know if it quality just made it look different, but I really think cold weather plays a major role. The first two were taken before it was particularly cold, so I think it has to do with that. That’s probably why patients are not supposed to be in the sun for at least 6 months and should always wear sunscreen. A lot of things affect recovery and if you are skipping out on them, you should reconsider your actions because my pictures are proof of that. And I DID follow the rules. See how much it changed even when following them? I am pleased thus far. I will update after my next appointment. I hate needles so wish me luck!

so since all of the plebeians of the world are on vacay, stay smart is on vacay too. so this morning

so since all of the plebeians of the world are on vacay, stay smart is on vacay too. so this morning we were enjoying our daily blogs with a healthy breakfast of pinot noir when we found out that apparently, like, most of the world is anti new years eve. um, what. talk about being a royal cunt, you guys. who hates a holiday? new years eve is totally harmless, unlike valentines day which makes all single girls feel like fat single girls. new years eve is positive and adorable, its telling us all to slow down and enjoy the last few seconds of a great year and get super party excited for the first few of the next year. hello, how can that be a bad thing? some people are totally negative and it’s seriously raining on our parades, not to mention our keratin treatments.

this is our nye glasswear. they all say "drink up bitch" and those are real pave diamonds we had dyed pink.

it’s overwhelming. it’s stressful for no reason. what to wear, what to do, what to drink, who to kiss. get the fuck over it, loser. everyone knows the only way to get what you want is to manipulate the situation to your precise liking and then to sit back and act aloof with a mojito while it all untangles in your favor. people who are outwardly stressed out and anxious totally disturb our chi. and even though we pretend not to learn things from our mothers, we do–it’s called worry lines, and we are avoiding them like the fucking plague.

here’s what new years eve should be about: out with the old, in with the fucking new. newer is usually always definitely sometimes better: new cars, new noses, new kardashian-jenner family members (sorry bruce, brody is old news. kendall and kylie are the new black, learn about it). we think that the issue with the world is everyone is paranoid that the new isn’t going to be as good as the old. like when the 4s first came out and everyone blamed siri for being anti abortion and then a bunch of boring stuff happened and then finally everyone was like wait, the 4s is good. it’s time to be fucking positive, people. being negative is so unattractive, not to mention you will follow in your mother’s plastic surg footsteps of being face lifted by mid 40s. its time to be positive and look forward to glamorous nye followed by a year that’s just as glamorous–hello, occupy wall street is now in the past, which is as good of a reason as any to love the present. also, kris humphries is single this year. LOL OBVIOUSLY WE DON’T CARE ABOUT THAT ONE. wow, we’re funny.

stumbling into 2012, always a classic

the way to have a successful new years eve is to start with an amazing dress. you know how when you get plastic surgery and you’re about to go under on anesthesia and the doctor is like “be calm and think happy thoughts because how you go down is how you come up” and you’re like um hi, i have a lot of experience in rhinoplasty, thanks doc. seriously though, medical school is hard for a reason, dolls. this idea that applies to a simple procedure applies to like, everything else in life. including new years eve. if you leave 2011 impeccably dressed and sipping a $52 margarita, chances are, 2012 will be another blur of money, looking amazing, feeling amazing, and being a-fucking-mazing. continue the trend by either caring immensely or not caring at all about who you kiss at midnight. let’s be honest, we are classy-ish girls. or at least, we were born and bred class, we’re not necessarily still wearing tennis whites to brunch because our mothers told us to. the new years eve kiss is adorable and attainable if you’re in talks with someone already. if you’re just drunk at a bar with your friends and searching for anyone in ferragamo loafers who lock lips with, we say keep it sweetly PG or don’t even bother. no one likes to see a drunk girl with her fake eyelashes falling off chasing some guy just because in the first season of the OC ryan literally 1. stops time and 2. jumps over couches to get to marissa by midnight to kiss her. (side note, ryan is poor and marissa is rich, which is why that show is actually unrealistic. not the stopping time thing. that is way more possible than this princess and the pauper thing they tried to convince us of.) i totally get the midnight kiss obsession, hello. when harry met sally is literally my bible and their new years eve love unveiling is what keeps me warm at night. but when harry met sally is a movie, and if my life were to be like a movie, it would be way closer to austin powers: the spy who shagged me than some neurotic couple finally deciding they’re in love after pretending to not be for like, 3 decades. who has that kind of time? bye, i’m like, busy.

here’s what to do: gather your friends in one place. make sure there’s soft lighting because one of your friends definitely has bad skin. make a nice dinner reservation where you can not eat and pay $80 for a white truffle pizza and talk some fucking shit. put on a gorgeous outfit, drink gorgeous champagne, talk gorgeous shit about all the jealous people staring at you and enjoy the last few hours of 2011 before the first few hours of 2012. stay happy, stay pretty, stay smart. auld lang syne, sluts.

Let’s Face it (a little pun for you!), the generic face is not attractive. Beauty should be i

Let’s Face it (a little pun for you!), the generic face is not attractive. Beauty should be individualized. It includes style and personality. That’s what sets you apart from being just “another pretty face.” Beauty Defined.

Devan (the girl I live with on the North Shore 2 days a week), turned to me the other day and said, “we look like sisters.” Well… we certainly did not start out that way. I’m Boston Bred and Russian/Polish by descent. She’s from Virginia and sports some very fair skin (more Eastern European). Several spray tans, a couple of boxes of Juvederm, some cheek augmentation, and a splash of bleach later… and we look like sisters. Either she’s blind… or we both have the same idea of beauty.

One thing that certainly sets us apart is our noses. I’m of Jewish descent, and my nose isn’t small. But it does fit my face. And I would never change it! I like classic beauty, and looking youthful… but generic is one thing I could NEVER be on the inside, and my idea of beauty will NEVER reflect that on the outside.

Do I love my nose? Eh. But it’s me. I feel like a lot of women complain about their noses. This is usually because it throws off the balance of someone’s face if it’s not in symmetry or proportion to other features (Proportion: The Rule of Thirds and Fifths).

If it’s broke, let’s fix it, and if it’s not broke… Let’s fix it!

Aside from correcting breathing problems, I rarely recommend rhinoplasty (nnnnnoseeee jobs). I have seen so many bad nose jobs. A lot of surgeon’s just have this generic nose that they put on every face… and then your stuck with it. Like tattooing your eyeliner… it’s forever. And it’s maximally invasive! And super expensive!

If only there were some alternatives…………

Oh, but there are! Depending on what your issues are, there are several less invasive and cheaper options for you to change your nose to be more aesthetically fitting to your face.

Contour with Make-up (cost < $100)

Check out this site. I think it shows a pretty good tutorial on contouring. Also, check out YouTube!

http://makeupforlife.net/2011/07/makeup-tutorial-how-to-contour-your-nose.html

For a special event, or a night out, contouring is a cheap, easy way to make your nose appear more aesthetically pleasing.

Lip Augmentation (cost $700)

I have a few clients who have large eyes, large noses, and a wide face… with small lips. This makes the face look unbalanced and makes the nose look bigger. By correcting the volume/size of the mouth, the face is put more into proportion. I have found lip augmentation to balance my facial features, and I am very happy with this option. My nose is symmetrical, straight, and I have no trouble breathing (i.e. a deviated septum). Remember, augmentation DOESN’T mean you will look like a duck. Discuss with your Nurse or Doctor what you find attractive. (I’ll have to take pics of this. Inbox me if you feel like this would be good for you!)

Liquid Nose Job ($700+)

I have been recommending this to a lot of people lately. Masha Banar, a Physician’s Assistant at JAR (Dr. Russo’s), does an amazing liquid nose job. This minimally invasive technique is performed using Botox and Fillers to correct any parts of the nose which are a-symmetric, can raise the tip of the nose, and fix some crooked features. I will be spending some time with Masha learning some of her techniques, so hopefully there will be more video’s to come. Check her out at www.visagesculpture.com or follow her on twitter @VisageSculpture.

**Actual Patient of Masha Banar, PA.

The following link is a tutorial on her treating a patient:

Nothing Replaces… Traditional Plastic Surgery ($$$)

If you have a deviated septum, and have difficulty breathing, or if you have a bump that really needs to be shaved… this might be the best option for you. If you decide to go under the knife, I have a few suggestions.

Tip #1 : Ask to see LOTS of before and afters.

It’s hard to get clients to agree to be a “before and after” example when it comes to your nose… because you really need to show the whole face. And we all want to be “naturally” beautiful. But your Board Certified PLASTIC Surgeon (see tip below). A lot of surgeon’s will have a signature style. If you see all the noses look EXACTLY the same RUN. You don’t want to look like Michael Jackson. A generic nose is NOT attractive. Sometimes the signature style will be shaving too much off the bridge, or making the tip turned up (i.e. the Prince of Pop). Look very closely at the pics, and if you do see something that resembles a personal “style” of the surgeon, think to yourself: does this fit my face? my style?

Tip #2: Certifications

Never, ever, ever ever ever see a general surgeon for a plastic procedure. They are NOT even remotely qualified. Do you want someone who wears a bow-tie, can’t dress themselves, and doesn’t know the first thing about make-up to be working on your FACE? Well… when I put it that way, I hope you say no.

What certifications do you want your doctor to have? Dr. Russo, for example, is a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, and a Fellow of the Academy of Cosmetic Surgeons (F.A.C.S.). Those are the type of credentials you should be looking for. They should be posted on the persons website in their Bio.

Look into what those letters stand for. Anyone can throw a bunch of letters on a page and make themselves look qualified. I’m a Latisse Lash Expert (brush my shoulder off!) – this took me twenty minutes of watching a tutorial (ok, I fast-forwarded the whole thing and just took the quiz at the end). But it sounds cool, doesn’t it!?!

Tip #3: Don’t Cheap Out

Dr. A will do a nose job for $2,500 and Dr. B will do it for $10,000. Financially, seems like a no-brainer. Realistically, Dr. A is probably not a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon (or a Doctor at all for that matter) and your procedure will be done in a basement under local anesthesia smuggled in from Brazil. And please stay out of Brazil. When you get your surgery botched (which you will) insurance will not fix it.

If you’re going to opt for surgery, let’s be real. It’s expensive. It lasts forever. In this case, it’s your FACE. Real Surgeon’s know what they’re worth and they are NOT cheap.

In the same respect, if the price is outrageous… you’re a sucker. Which leads us to Tip 4.

Tip #4: STAY AWAY FROM NEWBURY STREET

You’ll be overcharged for a generic “masterpiece.” Actually, stay off of Newbury for any type of beauty service. I’ve heard more horror stories from that street than ANYWHERE. (I will name no names). Even for hair… I’m not impressed. And fashion… Charles Street Hands Down! (I digress).

Tip #5: Have a consultation. Ask the right questions.

Check out this post if you’re Thinking about a NoseJob/Breast Aug/Lipo/Tummy Tuck? … Butt Implants?.

I MAY HAVE probably been using the word “awesome” a lot more than usual lately, so let me apologize in advance for the redundancy and my lack of vocabulary (lol).

This woman, however, deserves no less than my ultimate trademark compliment. XiaXue is, in a word, AWESOME, in a very quirky and interesting way. Seeing that photo above, people may deduce this as a very unlikely comment (especially coming from me), so let me give you a little history. A lot of early bloggers (and lurkers) from before 2006, may have already heard of her infamous blog (and I do not use that adjective lightly, just google her name and you’ll see), maybe even stumbled on it at some point in the last 8 years or so. If you are one of them, then might as well skip to the video. If not, read on.

Full disclosure: I was one of the early lurkers back in late ’04 to ’06, but somehow, college life took over my consciousness and I forgot about her blog along the way, only ‘rediscovering’ it a couple of weeks ago. To my surprise, it has gotten more entertaining than ever. No kidding.

Left: school photo of her in the nineties; Right: after several cosmetic surgeries in 2008

An excerpt from the video:

“During my first rhinoplasty, i had an implant put in my nose, my ala’s cut, and also the tip of my nose reduced. When I did that surgery, I was very, very unhappy with my previous nose and just basically wanted it smaller. So, I told my surgeon: just smaller, I don’t care what else you do, just FREAKING make it SMALLER because it is so fucking humongous…”

XiaXue‘s candid nature and brutal honesty are precious in a world where discretion and diplomacy (hypocrisy if you must) rule the roost. She has haters, that is expected of course, but she has even more followers: 40,000 unique visitors everyday to be exact. A sure sign that she must be doing something right.

Take for instance this seven month old video where she talks in detail about the various surgical ‘enhancements’ done to her face. It left me speechless the first time I saw it. All I could say was, ‘DAMN, this girl has guts!’

Let it be known that I do not necessarily agree with some of her convictions, her penchant for plastic surgery or with what she deems beautiful. But this I have to say, you gotta give the woman credit for literally putting herself out there — imperfections, two eyelid surgeries, two nose jobs, fillers, botox and godknowswhatelse. TGFXX.

Abbie got her cast off her nose and the stints pulled out today. I was picturing little tiny straws, like big around as little coffee stirers, you know? The things the doc pulled out of her nostrils were HUGE!! They were banana shaped, about three inches long and about an inch wide at the top of the curve! We all cracked up, in fact Abbie kept laughing while he tried to get the second one out. So hilarious. And yes, I did think to take a picture of them, but held back. Sorry. Maybe google it if you need to.

Wait. That’s a good idea. Hold on.

Well, there you go! That was easy! This is what they it looked like! (You home schoolers out there can use this for a science lesson.)

So Abbie felt immediately better with all that stuff off and out of her nose! She is going back to work on Thursday, and as glad as she is to be back among the living, I miss having her here.

I took these almost 2 years ago:

I took this today after her post-op appointment:

I was kind of afraid her nose would be as drastically different as Meg Ryan’s or Michael Jackson’s. And it’s still really swollen, so we can’t see what it’s really going to look like yet, but I’m glad to see she’ll still look like my sweet beautiful Abbie.
