With Minnesota pride, Aaron Maurer kills it with his digital and collage work. Aaron was born in the land of 10,000 lakes and grew up in the same neighborhood has me. After growing up there, he headed East to attend Rhode Island School of Design, where he majored in film and animation. He now lives and works in New York. Check out his work. It’s legit.

I’ve been reading A New Literary History of the United States. Here is some information about

I’ve been reading A New Literary History of the United States.

Here is some information about this very good book.

I read an essay in A New Literary History today about a book written in 1643 by Roger Williams.

(Above–A 1681 painting by an unkown artist of a Narragansett Indian Chief named Ninigret. It is the only reliable image of a Southern New England Indian of the time. This painting is owned by the Rhode Island School of Design.)

Roger Williams was the founder of my native state of Rhode Island. Here is a blog post I wrote about Williams. I’ve been told I’m related in some way to Williams. I hope this is the case.

The name of the book Williams wrote was A Key To The Language Of America.

Here is a picture of the cover of this book from 1643.

Key was about the langauge and customs of Rhode Island’s Narragansett Indians.

Here is information about the Narragansett Indians.

A New Literary History says that Williams saw these Rhode Island natives as equal to the New England Puritan colonists.

This angered the leaders of Massachusetts because it set a precedent of treating the natives in a way that might encourage them to be more assertive in their dealings with the colonists.

In A Key To The Language Of America Williams also acknowledged the role of Narragansett Indian women. This was unusual for the times.

Williams wrote that Narragansett women worked at least as hard as did the men and that they never complained no matter how difficult life became.

It is no surprise that a book that was ahead of its time in regard to Native Americans was also respectful of women in a time that women were not treated so well ( Just like today.)

Respect for all people is connected. Regard for one only has meaning when it is regard for all. Roger Williams of Rhode Island had this insight in the 17th century. It is that many people lack in the 21st century.

David Byrne

We all know David Byrne as the wildly animate singer of the Talking Heads, who’s carefree singing kept people talking about the Talking Heads long after the 80’s were over. But what some people may not know is that David Byrne has had one of the most prolific and varied careers long after the last Talking Heads record, Naked, was released in 1988.

To give a brief background of Mr. Byrne – he was born in Dumbarton, Scotland in 1952. He moved to Canada when he was two, and by age five he had taught himself to play the accordion. At 9 his family had moved to Boston, and by the time he enrolled in high school he had picked up the guitar and violin as well. Andrew Bird, eat your heart out.

But David Byrne is not only a passionate lover of music, he is as accomplished a visual artist as a sonic one. For a year, he took art classes at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in Providence, and then dropped out due to the fact that he thought the classes weren’t worth the money. However, the school was invaluable to him in that it brought him together with Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth who would form the Talking Heads with Jerry Harrison.

From left to right: Chris Frantz, Jerry Harrison, Byrne, and Tina Weymouth

During the band’s more than fifteen-year run from their first show in 1975 until they broke up in 1991, Byrne was extremely busy. Among other things, he directed all of the Talking Heads’ music videos, created the score for “The Catherine Wheel” a ballet choreographed by Twyla Tharp and formed the record label Luaka Bop – which highlights Brazilian pop artists.

After the Talking Heads’ official break-up, David Byrne created a series of albums – many of them having Latin themes or even Spanish language lyrics. In 2002, he released the record Uh-Oh, the cover of which shows a choir of angels surrounding a cartoon dog seated on a heavenly throne.

"Uh-Oh" by David Byrne

On his website all Byrne offers about the record is that “funk and Latin grooves were combined together”, but any combination of ago-go bells and bass clarinet, like this record has deserves a listen. “Now I’m Your Mom”, the first track on the album has lyrics that will both amaze and shock you:

Oh little girl

Please understand

And listen to the words I say

I was your dad

Now I’m your mom

I hope you’ll comprehend someday

This track goes one to have one of the best instrumental breakdowns in any song that I have heard. Layer by layer, Byrne and his band build up the the sound – but what makes it so incredible is that the layers are made up of horns and woodwind instruments. In thirty seconds, he brings in two french horns, a flugelhorn, flute, clarinet and of course my personal favorite – the bass clarinet.

David Byrne has a way of absorbing everything around him and then incorporating what he collects into his own re-creations of the world. He playfully nudges religion in “A Walk in the Dark” off of the same album (and also throws in some more bass clarinet to boot):

Now Jesus, Mary and the Holy Ghost

They s*** their pants, they got so scared

But David Byrne has mellowed out a little but with his most recent record Everything That Happens Will Happen Today (2008). For the recording he teamed up again with British rocker Brian Eno, who played with the Talking Heads from 1978 to 1982. The album is more probing than anything else David Byrne has done since the Talking Heads and is fatalist in a Donnie Darko sort of way. You can listen to the whole album here.

THE WORKING STIFF – By Darren Garnick
“Time to draw the donuts!”
Originally Published: The Boston Herald

**
My first lesson about career jealousy oozed out of a box of donuts.

In the early 1980s, when I was a scrawny offensive lineman for the Chelmsford High School Lions, I watched two fellow sophomores squabble over a chocolate kruller. Shawn, owner of the Dunkin’ dozen, adamantly refused to give Harry a single crumb.

Harry was not only our team’s worshiped running back, but was also in all honors classes and a shoo-in to be picked in the professional baseball draft. The fact that he only hung around upperclassmen after
school made him a pariah with his peers.

“I wouldn’t give him a donut if this locker room was filled to the ceiling with donuts!” grumbled Shawn, sprinkling in a few F-bombs. “I wouldn’t give him one even if the whole school was filled with donuts!”

Another player witnessing this scene was art student John Krause, who like me, had the opposite problem as Harry. We weren’t important enough to (italics) deserve (end itals) complimentary donuts. Posing no threat to steal playing time away from anybody, the artist and the writer were essentially just pregame tackling dummies for the seniors.

Ironically, my friend John went on to sketch some of the most famous frosted donuts in history. And this week represents his most glorious moment.

John is the “prop design lead” for The Simpsons Movie, which debuts in theaters worldwide this Friday. That means he oversaw the creation of every vehicle, building, tree, street sign and inanimate object in the Springfield universe.

Nearly every can of food in the Kwik-E-Mart had John’s stamp of approval. Police Chief Wiggum’s badge and gun? Reverend Lovejoy’s bible? Lisa’s saxophone? Otto’s school bus? All John’s work, too.

He’s been at the gig for 14 of the TV show’s record 19 seasons. But virtually every prop from the series needed to be redesigned with more details to survive closer scrutiny on the movie screen. With Disney-Pixar and DreamWorks being the new standard bearers of animated features, the simple line drawings of Homer and Marge needed an upgrade.

If my friend had wound up opening an art gallery in Paris and had his paintings displayed at the Louvre, I would be happy for him. But I wouldn’t be bragging that I know him.

Like any job, I’m sure his work must seem monotonous at times and his office must have its fair share of schmucks. But from the outside peering in, from the perspective of what makes fascinating dinner party conversation, he simply has the coolest job ever.

I’m obviously not the only one who thinks so. John sheepishly admits his job title used to serve as a surefire pickup line with women (before he met his wife Maria). And once or twice a year, he has the privilege of sharing his skills with terminally ill children visiting from the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The amazing thing is that John never dreamed of working in cartoons. At the Rhode Island School of Design, he pursued highbrow disciplines such as sculpture, oil painting, furniture design and stained glass. At nearby Brown University, he also studied human anatomy and morphology by sketching cadavers.

But go ahead and check the job listings for “classic oil painter.” Dead body portraiture isn’t the most welcoming profession either. So when John first learned about animation opportunities through his RISD network, he pounced.

His anatomy classes have since come in handy for sketching the wounded internal organs of “Itchy & Scratchy,” the Simpsons’ hyper-violent incarnation of “Tom & Jerry.”

I don’t know what my high school classmates Shawn or Harry will be doing this weekend. But hopefully I’ll be at the movies, waiting to see John’s name in the credits.

Some of us who don’t achieve our original career dreams are blessed to later discover something even better. And at the very least, I’m thrilled that both John and I can now afford to buy our own boxes of donuts.

A site that provides a forum for emerging student artists to showcase their work, and has a philanthropic twist? Count us in!!

We love the Student Art Gallery, launched last June by two Arizona entrepreneurs, Jeff Skoglind, and Danny Wojtenowski.

Their mission is simple: to bring art to the forefront and support it’s evolution, while giving exposure to student artists and providing a means to sell their work. Did we mention that a contribution from each sale is gifted back to the artist’s school?

Currently, the site features a highly curated selection of 150 pieces, but the founders hope to represent 1500 works by the fall.
It’s a great way to support the future careers of up and coming artists, find affordable artwork, and help fund the arts programs while you shop. What’s not to love?

Check it out!

“I chose to illustrate this image of two girls knitting (in a Rush Arts Education program) because I think it really captures the idea that learning art in schools is about more than crayon drawings — it’s about creativity, something that transcends all class and race boundaries. I think the joy of making something is universal, and it’s an opportunity that every kid should have.” Shepard Fairey

Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation is proud to present the Tenth Anniversary ART FOR LIFE East Hampton, an annual benefit event celebrating the creative energy of New York City youth. This benefit is one of Rush Philanthropic’s most important annual fund raising efforts, attended annually by a sold-out audience of more than 750 leaders in the entertainment, arts, business, and philanthropic communities. Shepard is being presented as this year’s Featured Artist for the event. Last year Shepard donated an original Obama ‘HOPE’ piece that was a great success in fund raising for the Foundation. This Shepard is again donating piece of artwork of a brand new image. Shepard Fairey is the man behind OBEY GIANT, the graphics that have changed the way people see art and the urban landscape. What started with an absurd sticker he created in 1989 while a student at the Rhode Island School of Design has since evolved into a worldwide street art campaign, as well as an acclaimed body of fine art. In 2003, Shepard founded Studio Number One, a creative design firm dedicated to applying his ethos at the intersection of art and enterprise. Shepard’s art reached a new height of prominence in 2008, when his ‘Hope’ portrait of Barack Obama became the iconic image of the presidential campaign and helped inspire an unprecedented political movement.

Contrast in Material, Color and Mood

The jewelry from Jason Wu’s Fall 2009 RTW collection was designed by Philip Crangi. Crangi describes his work as “one of contrast in material, color and mood.” He went to the Rhode Island School of Design where he trained as a goldsmith and, after graduating, began making jewelry in 2001. In 2007, Crangi was one of the winners of the 2007 CFDA/VOGUE Fashion Awards for best designer.

I particularly like Crangi’s work he did for Wu’s 2009 collection because it reminds me of jewelry from Ancient Roman, Greek, and Egyptian times. I like the draped, repetitive look of both Crangi’s work and of the ancient jewelry. In contrast to the ancient jewelry, Crangi’s necklaces are more modern and geometrical.

Enjoy the pictures of Crangi’s work from Wu’s Fall runway show, followed by examples of Ancient Roman, Greek, and Egyptian jewelry.

Other designers have produced similar repetitive, draped looking jewelry this season. I particularly like the necklace of daggers Robert Lee Morris designed for Elizabeth and James, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s line.

“Graphic art makes a difference.”

So says Shepard Fairey, known worldwide for that graphic art and quickly becoming one of the most notable spokesmen for that elusive group known as Gen X’ers.

And he’s right. You may not know the man’s face or, possibly, his name (yet), but you certainly remember this difference-making Fairey image:

The Obama image had everyone talking last year. And, despite Fairey’s recent arrest in Boston (his 15th arrest for street art in his 39 years), he remains in demand to provide more insight into what makes him tick.

And, this week, in one of the better interviews you’ll see with the straight-shooting Fairey, The Onion’s A.V. Club caught up with the pride of the Rhode Island School of Design (Class of 1992).

Fairey discusses his philosophies on copyright law, street art, the Internet, and this classic, career-defining André The Giant image:

If you’re buying what he’s selling, check out OBEY: Supply & Demand – The Art of Shepard Fairey along with the latest work of his Los Angeles-based Studio Number One.

Tough to say when the next iconic Fairey image will reveal itself. But, whether you’re a fan or a hater, you can pretty much guarantee that his influence will continue to be felt with great impact in the years ahead.

Wear the book. Be in the square. Make test books. Do it on tracing paper.

Author illustrator David Macaulay puts words to his latest process in this video shot by fellow author-illustrator Thatcher Hurd for the San Francisco Center for the Book’s recent exhibition,’Once Upon a Book.’

English born, an honors architecture graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, David Macaulay has delighted the world with his books that look at the inner workings of things — from 16th century caravel sail ships, to grist mills, to more complex machines like, well, the human body.

He won the Caldecott Medal in 1991 for his book Black and White, of which ALA Booklist said, “It’s a story. It’s a puzzle. It’s a game.”

He’s also received one of those MacArthur Fellowship “genius grants.”

Judging by this video, he also has one of the coolest art studios, anywhere.
I would love to work in there every day.

They are designed to host downloadable digital images of work by RISD faculty and students from any department, and we hope that eventually they will become archives of the artwork created in the school. To see these collections, login to RDID with your RISD username and password, then go to Browse, and select RISD Faculty Gallery or RISD Student Gallery from the drop-down list at the top. You can browse by the individual names, or by instructors’ names, departments, courses, semester, and materials. You can also do keyword searches. We hope this feature of RDID will become a resource for students and faculty working on specific project at RISD, and we look forward to your feedback!

Senior French horn player Kathryn is choosing between Belmont University, Juilliard, University of Texas at Austin, Eastman School of Music, USC, NYU Tisch Recording Arts Program, Boston University, Northwestern, University of Miami, McGill, Peabody, DePaul, Manhattan School of Music, Eastman, and New England Conservatory. Wow. Once the initial shock of that list settles in you start wondering something. How did she have the time to apply and audition at all of those schools?!?

Well, we help our students. We offer a structure to help students hone and polish their auditions, do great applications. The writing teachers help with essays. The music teachers make sure the auditions are great and that the player is poised, professional and ready to respond to whatever obstacles are thrown at them. The transportation coordinator helps book travel so that our students can go to whatever audition they want to go to. Our faculty invites schools to hold auditions on our campus so that students don’t have to travel. Academic faculty think of creative ways to give assignments so that students can earn credit in classes while students are on the other side of the country playing for the Juilliard faculty.

We work as a team and the results show it! I’ll attach the complete and final list of college acceptances here. If you’re out there in the world wondering whether we’re still accepting applications for next year, the answer is yes! We’re ready to add your acceptances to this list.

A few items to take note of in this USA Today story on the projected growth of online video in 2009:

A few items to take note of in this USA Today story on the projected growth of online video in 2009:

- 187 billion videos will be streamed over the Internet in 2009, up 24% from last year.

- Customers of Brightcove, the Cambridge, Mass.-based online video support company, include the AFL-CIO, Anti-Defamation League, Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, Archive of American Law Enforcement and The Asia Foundation.

- Rhode Island School of Design cut its admission budget by 20 percent last year by using online video to attract new students.

So what does this mean?

It appears as though outlets with a strong social standing (or perceived social standing, depending on your views) have embraced online video as an efficient, professional step in disseminating their messages. Also, I’m sure colleges not only view this as a cost-saving measure in tough economic times, but a tool to attract their target demographic.

Take note.

By the way, this is a ringing endorsement for Brightcove. Their products are quality. The reproduction is crisp (when utilized correctly) and very few times will you find glitches in the service.

So, a couple of people have asked me, “Who is Rob Dobi, anyway?” By a couple of people,

So, a couple of people have asked me, “Who is Rob Dobi, anyway?” By a couple of people, I mean just Ryan Meier AKA Rieman Miller. I already answered the question to RM, but I figured maybe other people were curious to the answer as well, and I have nothing to do on this cold, Saturday evening…

Back in high school when I was listening to really cool (JK) emo bands, I set out to the internet to learn more about this elusive genre. What I found when I googled “emo” was Rob Dobi and what was then his assumed fifteen minutes of fame: how to dress emo.

Back when dobi.nu was in its prime in 2002, Dobi featured on his website not only a tongue-in-cheek look at emo fashion, but also more personal information, such as school pranks, old family photos and a slew of urban exploring photographs of abandoned, east coast insane asylums.

Today, dobi.nu presents Dobi as a successful t-shirt, poster businessman with clients, such as Urban Outfitters, Fallout Boy and the like. There are still some urban exploration photographs, but the personal anecdotes that really made Dobi stand out as more than just some RISD graduate are gone.

So, yup, there you have it: a brief summary of who Rob Dobi of the never disappearing Rob Dobi 2008 post is.

I had a feeling that we had not heard the end of the Shepard Fairey saga It came as a pleasant surpr

I had a feeling that we had not heard the end of the Shepard Fairey saga

It came as a pleasant surprise that a friend of mine took up the baton by writing to the Boston globe yesterday.

This was met with a host of comments both positive and negative and with an article or column written by a certain Kevin Cullen of the Boston globe

By way of disclosure – i am a friend of Greg and his wife Dina, and former active member of karmaloop since its inception. What Greg is trying to clearly articulate in his letter is nothing to do with whether shep broke the law, or whether tagging is a crime – its purely to do with the ridiculous timing of the actions taken by the Boston police that in turn is indicative of a larger culture of ignorance that hangs like a bad smell over ‘brand boston’.

This notion was authenticated in today’s paper (they still actually make those?) by kevin ‘insert campy irish knickname’ cullen.

lets try and boil this down.

Tagging, graffiti, and defacing of other people’s property is a crime. Shep and anyone else should answer to such charges in due process. Yes due process Kevin – you know that magna Carta tenet that is a building block of our great 5th amendment.

What Greg is arguing and i agree – is that the arrest – valid that it indeed was – made a larger statement than its role in ‘due process’. It stunk of the exact brand ignorance that continues to see Boston firmly parked in the space labeled ‘creative backwater’. Because it was an action greater than the execution of due process – it logically leads people to infer such notions of the city’s systemic ignorance. Ignorance so beautifully articulated in your column.

i mean seriously – Do you know Fairey? have you bothered to see whether there is any art in that vandals portfolio? – have you bothered to look in to his background, or to try and understand the creative movement that he participates in. A culture and lifestyle that Karmaloop also participates in.(the underbelly of which unfortunately is the taggers and vandals that do break the law).

Let me give you a quick lesson in case you were wondering.

Shep went to arguably one of America’s finest art colleges – Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). He was a classmate of my brothers. He comes from a sophisticated set of artistic disciplines and he leads a new type of creative movement that draws its sources from the same creative well that saw the explosion of re-mixing, DJ’ing and the such in the late 80’s in electronic music. Taking an existing piece of art and re-constituting through the lens of the participant. Ever heard of Warhol?

Image via Wikipedia

Karmaloop was founded and existed in one of those ‘art lofts’ in the south end for 4 years. it was the Piano Factory – i doubt you’ve been there – i never saw you and i lived there. Karmaloop is now a thriving business that Greg has built from nothing – it is the largest retailer of wares for this category worldwide – it is a creative hub for young Boston artists and musicians contributing to the fabric of this city.

This is a generation you are clearly ignorant of and have never bothered to research or participate in.

You would be well served to do your homework in future. The explosion of the paper business is imminent (see thousands of examples of its demise)and your future will increasingly rely on a more participatory form of journalism – you cant just spout your ignorant view without a feedback loop.

So yes – i say arrest fairey if he has warrants – and don’t canonize the underbelly aspects of this social movement that involve vandalizm and property damage.

But supporting an action that goes beyond due process, and in doing so telling the world that we are a bigoted bunch of creative prohibitionists is an unfair indictment on this city.

The bottom line is that this is an important and exciting installation for Boston. this is Greg’s point – Go see it – its very good.

I was invited to attend the opening of Supply and Demand by Shepard Fairey on friday night and it certainly did not dissapoint. Aside from the highly covered news of said Artist being arrested before he could attend the opening of his own show, the crowd were in a highly festive spirit. There was a line outside in the bitter cold, the event was sold out, and tickets were rumored to be going for silly prices.

Shepard went to college with my brother at RISD, many years ago, and we used to know him fondly as the T-shirt guy. We used to organize large electronic events in the new England area, and Shep used to run a silk screening business and supply us with t-shirts. he also used to sticker up each venue with no end of the early Andre Stickers!

The event was a true mish mash of several generations of the more alternative Boston population. Clearly Shep has struck a chord that transcends ages, and styles. Its been a very long time since i went out and saw such a diverse and interesting crowd. the exhibition did not disappoint, and i will surely go back for a more peaceful visit over the next few months. I highly reccomend it.

My beautiful friend Becca, who’s a senior at the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design, is studying taxidermy at the Missouri Taxidermy Institute for the winter session.

Becca is interested in puppetry and wants to include animal parts in her puppets. She’s been there a while and she has started a really cool blog, with viceos and all, of her experiences and her work at MTI.
