We have dogs. Two large ridgebacks (look it up) and boy are they pampered (apart from sleeping in the house, and getting treats, and being walked once a week….hmmm where’s the number for the RSPCA). However events took a most preposterous turn last week. And I blame my dear wife.

Kari, the biggest and daftest of the two (I’m still talking about the dogs, not the children- do keep up) cut her leg which meant a costly visit to the vet for an xray and associated unguents.

Let me make it clear at this stage in the story that at no stage did I get any veterinary advice to apply any significant aftercare other than a pill a day and check pulse etc. And so we headed home both of us lighter- the dog by half a pint of blood and me by £168.72.

I had to go to the pub to recover. Returning to the house I found the dog in some sort of canine heaven. Wife and children had decided that some severe pampering was in order. Cushions, blanket, the works. Children were draped over the addled hound as if rigor mortis was imminent.

And to top it all…..an ‘ice pack’ had been applied to the injured leg.  Fair enough I thought. Pampering for one day in the year costs nothing.

To a point. I have now discovered that the mysterious ‘ice pack’ was in fact a selection of ‘whatever was sitting around in the freezer’ .

So …..to cut a long story short both packets of Birds Eye Finest Petit Pois were used and then discarded (“well we can’t eat them after that” said she). Oh but it gets worse. At the weekend I enquired of the whereabouts of a large bag of very expensive fruit salad which I’d acquired from a farm shop a year earlier.

I think you can guess by now what it was used for….and where it ended up.

Madness.

Heute morgen waren Zara und ich wieder im Wald spazieren. Große Freude hatte ganz viele Leckerlie verloren, die ich dann netterweise alle aufgesammelt habe – man kann den Wald ja nicht so verschmutzen – und Zara hat die Zeit damit verbracht, ihrem Balli gigantische Höhlen zu graben !

Tja, und dann wollte ich euch noch meine neue Nuckeldose vorstellen !

Was Menschen-Babys beruhigt und Spaß macht, gefällt auch dem Hundekind   ! Die Nuckeldose, eigentlich eine Salbendose aus der Apotheke, bietet den Vorteil, dass der Inhalt nicht rückwärts herausläuft wie so oft bei den Futtertuben!

Incontro beautiful JJ durante la passeggiata. Convenevoli di rito e poi sguardo al mio compagno di percorso e l’ilare osservazione: “con te è più calmo però, si vede che hai una certa autorità ”. Si vede vero? Eh sì, un piglio autoritario innato il mio.

Effettivamente Lui, il mio compagno di percorso, è in uno stato di estatica placidia ma sicuramente sta meditando marranate. Perchè Lui è così: assolutamente imprevedibile. Due profondi occhi a mandorla che ti sciolgono il cuore e una forza da leone che ti catapulta al suolo mentre ti stai giustappunto chiedendo cosa sia successo…

Lui è un mio nipote anche se, geneticamente parlando, appartiene ad una razza diversa dalla mia. Cioè, Lui cammina a quattro zampe mentre io no. Lui ha una peluria che però,a pensarci bene, anche io ho, sebbene diversamente distribuita. Tuttavia la sua peluria è di quel bel colore della terra appena arata e un pò bagnata ed è necessaria alla sua sopravvivenza. La mia invece è color carbone, antiestetica e fastidiosa e sopravviverei decisamente meglio senza.

Per distinguere Lui da eventuali altri nipoti (che pure vanno a quattro zampe ma  solo in fase temporanea) e un pò per evitare la camicia di forza quando ne parlo in pubblico, mi riferisco a Lui con l’appellativo affettivo (ed effettivo) di “Piluso”.

Piluso vive nella ferma convinzione di essere un grande proprietario terriero: ettari ed ettari di terreno circostante le campagne in cui vive con tutto quello che ci cresce sopra sono praticamente suoi. “Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it {…}”scrisse il grande Kipling, con evidente riferimento agli antenati di Piluso.

E così, tanto per essere espliciti, ad ogni uscita l’amato Piluso delinea i confini delle “sue” proprietà versando un numero infinito di liquidi che manco fosse Bossi che demarca la “sua” Padania.

Tecnicamente parlando, Piluso è un misto di pastore maremmano e rhodesian ridgeback. Da un punto di vista letterario è un perfetto incrocio tra Don Rodrigo e Don Chisciotte. Quando usciamo insieme il mio ruolo spazia dunque dalla “Brava” manzoniana al Sancho “Panzella” perchè, visti i pochi chili che mi compongono, come Panza sarei veramente poco credibile.

Insieme, Piluso ed io viviamo avventure fantastiche (che a me che già ho una fervida immaginazione solo mi mancava un nipote quadrupede color caramello con la fantasia di Cervantes e l’arroganza di Don Rodrigo…)

Tutto l’inanimato che incontriamo sul nostro cammino è un ostacolo da sormontare e tutto l’animato un nemico da distruggere.

Minacciose sono le foglie che si posano al suolo: da dove provengono? Cosa sono? Che intenzioni hanno?;

sospette le “muraglie”di legna tagliata di fresco: cosa nasconderanno?sono veramente  immobili o è un’ignobile finzione?appostiamoci, Panzella e verifichiamo;

decisamente incauti gli ossessi del jogging che hanno l’ardire di correre nelle “sue” terre: Amici o nemici? Sniffatina di controllo, please;

assolutamente fuori di senno coloro i quali guidano a tutta velocità quegli strani e rumorosi mezzi a quattro ruote: e il permesso di entrare chi ve l’ha dato?All’attacco, mia Brava, inseguiamoli! Mostriamogli il canino acuminato a questi imbecilli;

fuori discussione un contatto sociale con altri quadrupedi di sesso maschile: ohibò, e questo chi sarebbe? Come osa pestare codeste terre? Ma non l’ha avvertito nessuno a quest’ impunito? Insomma ma.. vi manca il dono dell’olfatto? No perchè la demarcazione è chiara.. La rinnovo quotidianamente, due volte al dì e queste terre sono MIE! Capito? M-I-E! ho detto e.. latrato e …abbaiato e… ululato, tirando con tutta la forza   l’odiato guinzaglio e una traballante Sancho Panzella.

Scongiurati i pericoli, stanchi ma felici (come si dice in tutti i racconti) Piluso ed io ci fermiamo ad ammirare i campi sconfinati, scrutando l’orizzonte e odorando l’aria che sa di terra; Lui meditando sull’ebbrezza di correre libero in quei campi, io pensando pensieri inutili.

Idag har vi varit på valputstälning i Malmö och kollat läget, ja främst bland Ridgebackarna. Åh visst blir man sugen, det ska man inte sticka under stolen med. Roligaste var att träffa alla ringside, trist att det blir så långt mellan gångerna bara. Ulrika som äger Jaxons syster och halvbror, Jamie och Quinn, hade med sig lilla Alina som var första gången på hundutställning, det ska ju börjas i tid, kan ju tänka mig att det inte blir sista gången.

Spiel-Spaß-Motivation

Das wünscht sich jeder Mensch von und mit seinem Hund. Eigentlich sollte das nicht so schwer zu erreichen sein, denn Spiel ist fester Bestandteil im Verhalten vieler Säugetierarten, so auch bei Mensch und Hund. Dennoch gibt es um Spiel herum immer wieder Missverständnisse zwischen den Partnern.

Spiel folgt eigenen Regeln, ist abhängig von einer funktionierenden Kommunikation. Spiel ist nicht nur Verhalten, Spiel ist ein mentaler Zustand, den viele Hunde nicht mehr erreichen, weil sie verunsichert, ängstlich oder übermäßig gestresst sind. Schafft man es, diese Hunde zum Spielen zu bewegen, bauen sie Ängste, Verspannungen und die Auswirkungen von Stress wieder ab und haben die Chance, mental stabiler zu werden. Andere Hunde wieder haben Probleme mit ihrem Erregungsniveau. Spiel ist bei ihnen leicht auslösbar, aber sie zeigen schnell unerwünschtes Verhalten wie Kläffen, Bedrängen, Schnappen und Beißen.
Beiden Typen, sowohl dem zaghaften als auch dem überdrehten Spieler kann geholfen werden. Von Veränderungen in der Körpersprache des Menschen, über passendes Spielzeug, Bewegungsgeschwindigkeit bis hin zu einer individuellen Mischung verschiedener Spielformen – in der Werkzeugkiste findet sich immer etwas passendes für jeden Hund.
Im Spiel und für das Spielen gibt es viel zu lernen und zu praktizieren:

• Passende Spielmöglichkeiten entdecken
• Körpersprache – zum Spiel motivieren, Spielzeug aktivierend einsetzen
• Kontrolle des Spielvorgangs ohne sozialen Druck
• Stimuluskontrolle – nicht das Spielzeug löst das Spiel aus, sondern die Einladung des Menschen – Spielsignale – Aufbau einer eindeutigen Kommunikation -
• Impulskontrolle an Spielzeug – verbale und taktile Stop-Signale aufbauen
• Zerrspiele richtig aufbauen und durchführen – Spielen ohne Frust durch “Verlieren”
• Spiele als Nachahmung von Jagdsequenzen
• Stimmungswechsel aufbauen – anspruchsvolle Form der Impulskontrolle
• Transfer der emotionalen Grundlage des Spiels auf andere Verhaltensreaktionen
• Spiel als Belohnung
• Stress im Spiel erkennen und abbauen

Author Sian Hall offers her own insights through her extensive study on Africa, the history, the people, the land and the African dogs in her book, “The Dogs of Africa”.

Dogs fit in extremely well with ancient nomadic lifestyles, where great distances were covered in search of game. The dog was involved in the family group and regarded as a permanent member of the camp, vital in driving the herds, guarding the camp and an aid in the hunt. This effect is very evident in some of the African dogs. The Rhodesian Ridgeback, a descendent of the nomadic Khoi dog, regards people as much more important than property. Unlike working breeds, the Ridgeback guards territory because it belongs to his family, not simply because he is territorial.

In contrast, the Canaan Dog of Israel, also from nomadic ancestry, behaves with very different standards. This breed is under the impression that the territory belongs to him together with all the moveable property and humans that come with it. He guards the humans simply because they come with the property. The Canaan Dog also has the ability to turn from domesticated to wild, or vice versa, as the situation dictates, offering him the greater opportunity of returning to the wilds if his home situation in the Bedouin camps became too miserable.

The indigenous Southern Dogs of Africa, with their loyal disposition, will not leave their domestic setting and owner no matter how horribly treated. In between, are the dogs of the Bantu-speakers.  For these dogs, their home ground and property is defended, no matter who inhabits the settlement.

Further south, in the arid searing sands of the Kalahari regions, the egalitarian Bushmen of Africa included their dogs in the Zhavo relationship of gift-sharing. Dogs were warmly welcomed to share the food with their owners around the campfire. Whatever was available in camp was shared equally among members – if the dog’s owners were well fed, so was the dog. The reverse held true as well. When the Bushmen came upon hard times, the dog would suffer just as a member of the band.

The lifestyle of the Bushmen included myths and legends that read like fairy-tales, many featuring animals thought to be people and vice versa. An ideology that helps explain why the dogs of the Bushmen were so well kept and highly integrated into their society. The Bushmen saw a world in which animals lived side by side with humans and other creatures, a world in which there were no class distinctions and all creatures were important in the eye of the maker.

The Dogs of Africa provides a detailed examination of dog breeds that have historic connections to the African continent: the Southern African Dogs, Basenji, Canaan Dog, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Saluki, Azawakh, Sloughi, Podenco Canario, Cirneco Dell’Etna, Pharaoh Hound, Ibizan Hound, Presa Canario, Boerboel, Bichon family, Maltese, Bichon Frise, Coton De Tulear, and the Maltese Poodle. Hall paints vivid word pictures of the physical, cultural and historical environments in which these dogs of Africa evolved. She weaves a breathtaking journey through the vast Serengeti, the searing arid deserts, the towering pyramids of Egypt, the granite boulders of the Zimbabwe and the dense, impenetrable jungles. Ich denke mal, dass bestimmt einige von euch schon über die Videos von Cesar Millan auf Youtube gestolpert sind. Die wirklich “netten” sind auf wundersame Weise verschwunden, aber einige Highlights lassen sich doch noch finden.

Und das nenne ich Vergewaltigung…

Es gibt noch mehr zu finden, aber ihr könnt selber weiter suchen, wenn ich euch noch mehr antun möchtet. Die Videos mit diversen Alpharollen, massiven Einwirkungen über Stachelhalsband und starkem Bedrängen sind jedoch mittlerweile schwer zu finden.

Cesar Millan schmückt sich gerne mit aggressiven Pitbulls, welche er z.B. heroisch via Alpharolle besiegt… Wie sollen Menschen-Frauen das machen? Gar nicht, war seine Antwort… Frauen wären nicht in der Lage, solch einem Hund körperlich so entgegenzutreten, drum sind große Hunde auch nichts für sie. Leider habe ich dieses Video nicht mehr gefunden. Sollte es mir über den Weg laufen, setzte ich es hier nochmal dazu.

In Italien wurden nun seine so hoch gelobten und vom National Geographic gesponsorten Folgen ausgestrahlt und die ersten Stimmen werden laut: STOP Millan!

Ich hoffe sehr, dass der Obermacho der “Hundeflüsterer” (Schlegel ist nicht wirklich besser) mit seinen Methoden wirklich mal unter die Lupe genommen wird. ER mag vielleicht mit seinen Techniken durchkommen – mich wunderts schon, dass er noch alle Körerteile besitzt – aber gefährlich wird es, wenn die Menschen vor dem Fernseher dieses nachzuahmen versuchen.

DANKE Italien! Ich hoffe ihr kommt weiter Deutschland. In Deutschland sind Schlegel, Hesterberg und Co im TV “gerne” gesehen. Menschen haben sich gegen diese Sendungen eingesetzt… was antwortet die Justiz? Die sind Hundetrainer, die dürfen das. Diese Begründung ist kein Witz..

Hunde sind keine Menschen, dass ist richtig – aber… Menschen sind auch keine Hunde und ihr seid nicht in der Lage, unsere Sprache zu sprechen, dafür fehlen euch die körperlichen Voraussetzungen!!!  Genausowenig können wir an eurer Sprache teilhaben bzw. mitsprechen. Wir müssen gemeinsam einen Weg finden, eine neue Sprache ohne den Einsatz von Gewalt zu entwickeln. Menschen wie Cesar Millan, welche sich als Alpha-Hündchen aufspielen, sind gewalttätig… und nichts passiert. Wehren wir Hunde uns, was passiert dann….?

Wenn ich mir manch seine Videos anschaue und in sein Gesicht blicke, wenn er von zig Hunden begleitet gefilmt wird, dann glaube ich, fühlt er sich ähnlich, wie ich, wenn ich eine gut duftende Hunde-Dame in der Nase habe !

Mr Jaxon föddes den 7 augusti 2004 på RidgeBow’s kennel utanför Landskrona hos Britt-Marie och Sven Stjärnfeldt, tillsammans med sju stycken syskon. Undan SUCH Lövfällan´s Quid Pro Quo och efter NordUch DKUCh ESTCh INTUCh BalW-06 Mankoya’s Great Gambo….

Heute hat Große Freude die Camera in die Hand genommen, um ihrem Freund in Japan zu zeigen, wie sie mit mir die “konditionierte Entspannung” trainiert. Durch dieses Entspannungstraining ist es mir möglich, selbst in ganz aufregenden Situationen auf ein Signal soweit entspannt zu werden, dass ich wieder klar denken kann und meine Menschen mich so wieder besser “erreichen” können.

Es mag vielleicht wie ein einfaches In-die-Decke-Kuscheln aussehen, es hat aber alles seinen Sinn !

This is what dog carsickness looks like.

This pup does not have rabies he is simply foaming at the mouth aka hypersalivation or excessive salivation brought on when he realizes he will be required to enter a vehicle.

Keep in mind that:

* A. The vehicle’s ignition has not yet been turned on.  The car is off,  parked & not moving.

* B. The dog has just entered the vehicle.

So it is interesting to note that this canine has already associated the stimuli into it’s brain of what is about to take place which of course is that the vehicle will turn on and the vehicle will begin to have motion thus resulting in dog not feeling well which ultimately could result in vomiting…or is it more then that?

This particular puppy is a 6 month old Rhodesian Ridgeback pup. He is normally a healthy big rambunctious puppy and loves to be around his people and is very social always wanting to play with other dogs. The thing is that  he resists entering and exiting vehicles. He gets what appears to be familiar symptoms of dog carsickness which sometimes leads to vomiting and intensified gassy episodes during car travel. Once he is in vehicle he lays down and you do not hear a sound out of him except for sometimes the intense foaming mouth drool buildup. He does not always vomit but he almost always starts to foam at the mouth prior to both entering and exiting the vehicle. His car trips with me were not his first experiences in a vehicle(s) nor with carsickness.  I am his dogwalker/dog nanny so he associates me with a very good time as I only take him places he likes to go! Out of a 9 day trial period with a weekend non car travel break between, he vomited only on 3 of 18 different rides (Two 30 minute car rides each day). One in a crate and two not using a crate and each time the vomiting resulted at the end of car ride after vehicle has finally stopped moving, turned off and is about to exit vehicle. I also found it was best to not feed this pup an hour+ prior to car travel and having fresh air circulating such as slight open car windows and or sunroof open helped keep everyone happy for that matter!

How to help pup overcome the carsickness?

* Stay calm and use soft high tone happy voice to encourage a good feeling.

* Get in car first and encourage dog to get in with you but do not offer food cause it might come right back up!

* Make sure you have a large waterproof type blanket and big thick dog towels handy in the car for easy cleanups!

* Calmly tell the dog everything will be OK and do not make a big deal about it, just get going! When driving speak to pet in a happy tone to help get dogs mind off any fear or sickness they might be feeling.

* Once you have reached your destination then praise pet for getting through this ride as you remove pet from vehicle.

* If dog does get sick do not punish dog, simply clean it up and offer water to dog and walk dog around to help calm them and get fresh air.

* Take short trips and make sure they are FUN trips that result in a destination your dog will appreciate then gradually make longer trips but you may need to make frequent stops.

As an animal communicator, I personally sense carsickness could be one of two things if not both:

1.) A patholigical phobia of cars or enclosed spaces rather then the actual motions of the vehicle.

2.) The actual physical motion sickness. Dog get’s sick whether it be on a boat, plane, car or train.

If you have had any experience with dog carsickness I would like to hear your stories/opinions/personal research if and how you and your dog overcame carsickness. I want to hear from pet owners and dog professionals in any field, whether it be veterinary medicine, animal behavior, dogwalkers, animal communicators, etc.

Det är slut på veckan, nu är det dags för Fredagsmys…!

Hej! För ungefär tre veckor sedan köpte matte och husse en fin komplett “matbar” till mig, ganska dyr var den också har jag hört så där i efterhand… Men jag vill helst inte dricka ur den. Jag dricker hellre ur den gamla vattentunnan. Vattnet smakar bättre där helt enkelt. Voff!

Idag var det avlägsna stygn på schemat. Då jag är utbildad undersköterska, tyckte jag att det var onödigt att åka tillbaka till sjukhuset bara för att få detta gjort. Men självklart frågade jag sköterskan om detta var ok. Det var det.

Så med en desinficerad sax och pincett samt ett bra samarbete mellan Martin, Jaxon och mig, så var det ganska så smidigt avklarat. Såret har läkt fint så nu äntligen slipper vi den Stora tratten i det Lilla huset. Jaxon har dock varit helt oberörd av tratten, men det har inte vi…

Årets världsutställning ägde rum i Slovenien, med 21052 anmälda hundar. Med 286 anmälningar, hamnade Rhodesian Ridgeback på en fjärde plats, med störst antalet anmälda i rasen, flest var Golden Retriver med 315 anmälningar. Rhodesian Ridgebacks dömdes sammanlagt av tre domare;
