Heh heh… I told people I’d post this song. In fact I threatened them. It is all my friends’ fault for singing it over an over last night. So as punishment, I present it to all of you now. It is one of those songs you know all the words to (if you listened to the radio at all in the 80s), but you question if you want to.

Honestly, though I kind of like it now and I do wonder why. It has that familiarity that makes it attractive now, but otherwise I probably would not like it at all. It is kind of like an old acquaintance from high school who you probably didn’t really like all that much in school, but now running into them is kind of nice because you can both talk about the old days. Perhaps now I will like it because I will forever remember my friends singing it poorly over and over? Although I could fill this space with one of countless songs I like more, it is payback time. I need to stick to my word too! Sing on Billy!

The King of Funk: James Brown (1933-2006) bustin' some moves

Growing up in the 1960s, I saw a lot of the Sunday night television program, “The Ed Sullivan Show.” I was eleven years old when James Brown appeared on the variety show in 1966. I’d never seen anyone perform like him before. He just came all apart on stage. He sang and sweated and scooted around the floor like he was on fast skates. But the part I couldn’t believe was when he became so overwrought with emotion – pleading, crying – that a fellow musician saw fit to intervene, come on stage, throw a cape over Brown’s shoulders, and escort him offstage.

At first, he looked like he was going to take the suggestion and leave. He’d take a few steps then throw off that cape. He’d fall back into his frenzied song, falling to the floor. Again the man would come – with a different cape each time, always fancy, sometimes leopard-printed, and, again, try to take Brown offstage before he became completely unglued.

The two videos here are from the days before James Brown hit the big time. They’re poor quality; you can’t really see Brown’s face well. But the footwork and raw energy in both performances is unsurpassed. In later performances, everything is so polished, and the costumes so over the top, the band and dancers so distracting, that you can forget to just keep your eyes on the great James Brown.

In this first video, James Brown sings “Please, Please, Please.” You’ll be able to see the full theatrics of the cape routine. Note how short Brown’s pants are.

In this video, you can see the fancy dancer Michael Jackson emulated. Go, James, go! “I Feel Good”

James Brown was recognized by numerous titles, including and foremost The Godfather of Soul, Soul Brother Number One, Sex Machine, Mr. Dynamite, The Hardest Working Man in Show Business, The King of Funk, Minister of The New New Super Heavy Funk, and Mr. Please Please Please Please Her.

Comedian Eddie Murphy did a parody of James Brown on Saturday Night Live,
strutting around a hot tub in a robe singing:

Sometimes it make me break out in a cold sweat!
One two three four!
Hot tub! Ha! Da!
Ah-full of water!
I say hot tub! Ha!
Day! Ba! Very, very hot… Very hot! Da!
Hot tub! Gonna get ya hot-a!
Gonna make ya sweat! Hey! Say!
Hot tub! Rub a dub in the hot tub!
Rub a dub with me!

At the end of the routine, ”Brown” takes off his robe and reveals a very taut and muscular Eddie Murphy - in a gold lamé bikini. Click here to see this hilarious video.

Five years ago, they created a song (My Boo) that has been my best duo single of all time and now, and WIKIPEDIA confirms it folks,

Usher and Alicia Keys are set to release their new studio albums this December 2009. Alicia Keys opens the month with The Element of Freedom.

“I eliminated all of the boundaries and all the limitations, so that you can feel your freedom and express your freedom in every way you possibly can.” Alicia said.

Right now, her debut single “Doesn’t Mean Anything” is at my track list and I am playing it all the time.

At last, he’s really back after a year of waiting.

Usher’s sixth studio album is called Raymond VS Raymond and comes out on the eighth of December. Its debut single entitled “Papers” says it all. I could say I am not 100% into this song but man, all about this song is good.

Usher goes deep, he is letting his emotions flow naturally and he is giving me sets of emotions to feel when a relationships comes to an end. This is what “Papers” is all about.

Usher and Alicia Keys, these two complete me. Their songs are the reason why I am alive and still smiling. With their release of their new “award-winning” masterpieces, this will be a Merry, Merry Christmas to me.

I will not be surprised if I just found myself right at the middle of a music bar and go home holding two discs all at once.

Mark your calendars, folks. No excuses this time!

Who Does it Best ? Al Green or Curtis Mayfield? That’s the question, the only question! There

Who Does it Best ? Al Green or Curtis Mayfield?

That’s the question, the only question!

There is only one question. Who does it best? My love of music is what has triggered this burning question.

Now, before we go any further, let me just explain one thing (before all of my nearest and dearest bombard this blog with their comments). When I say I love music, I do. Although a bit of a soul gal, I do listen to almost anything and all genres (except punk and not too much rock please).

 View This Poll
polls
However, I’m not what you would call a walking “Wiki” of music genres. In fact, I often have problems remembering the titles of songs or albums and the year of release. Dare I say it (yes, I feel ashamed!), quite often the artist or band’s name doesn’t readily spring to mind (okay nearest and dearest, it’s public, so no rude comments, please). That said, that shouldn’t stop me from loving my music, should it?

Anyhoo (to steal a favourite term of a mate), there I was having one of those ‘glass of wine, playing my music” sessions and was listening to “People Get Ready” (that’s the real title, honest!) by the wonderfully soulful Al Green. I then dipped into my collection and played the version by Curtis Mayfield (oooh maan!). Both are beautiful. Trust me!

It was then that I thought “Who does it best?” Now I have my opinion (subjective obviously). But what do you think? Go listen to them and then vote on WHO DOES IT BEST? Oh and don’t forget to check in soon to see how the versions between U2, Bob Dylan, Joss Stone, Rod Stewart, Dusty Springfield and Ziggy Marley all compare on “Who does it best?”.

From Jon Hammond N.Y., NY: I was honored to be invited to be with friends, family and Atlantic Records WEA and so many Musicians on this day in 1989 in Lincoln Center. I arrived with Bernard Purdie long-time Atlantic recording artist and we sat together amongst the Musicians, in concert were Modern Jazz Quartet, Roberta Flack, Phil Collins, Manhattan Transfer, Ron Carter, Sylvia Simms and at end after Ahmet’s eulogy George Wein played a piano blues with Claude Nobbs on harmonica. Cocktail reception followed, it was somber but warm and joyful at the same time. Now Ahmet has passed RIP, he was always nice to me so I pass this on in their memory.
Sincerely,
*Ahmet Ertegun was “one of the most significant figures in the modern recording industry” who “co-founded Atlantic Records in 1947 with partner Herb Abramson. Atlantic was at the forefront of great independent labels that sprang up in the late Forties, challenging the primacy of the major labels of the time (RCA, Columbia and Decca) by discovering, developing and nurturing new talent. Under the guiding hand of Ertegun – the son of a career diplomat and a lifelong jazz and blues aficionado – Atlantic became the nation’s premier rhythm & blues label in a few short years. The label’s artist roster in the Fifties reads like an honor roll of R&B talent: Ruth Brown, Big Joe Turner, Ray Charles, LaVern Baker, the Drifters, the Coasters, the Clovers, and many more. During this period, Ertegun produced or coproduced the vast majority of records released on Atlantic. He even wrote songs for Atlantic artists in the early days using the pseudonym “Nugetre” (Ertegun spelled backwards). Though he was less directly involved as a producer, Ertegun continued at the helm of Atlantic in the Sixties and Seventies as the company conquered the realms of soul and rock, from Aretha Franklin to Led Zeppelin, with phenomenal success. Ertegun serves as chairman of Atlantic Records to this day. At the tenth annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Dinner in 1995, it was announced that the museum’s main exhibition hall would be named after Ertegun.” (quote from Museum)

Nesuhi Ertegun “spent most of his lifetime working at Atlantic Records and associated labels. He joined Atlantic in 1956, nine years after its founding by his brother Ahmet and Herb Abramson. Nesuhi initially developed Atlantic’s album department and built up the label’s extensive catalog of jazz long-players. The list of jazz artists he produced at Atlantic over the years reads like a who’s who: John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Ornette Coleman, the Modern Jazz Quartet and more. Nesuhi also became involved with the label’s rhythm & blues and rock and roll roster as well, producing several hit records for Ray Charles, the Drifters, Bobby Darin and Roberta Flack. The son of a Turkish diplomat, Nesuhi acquired his taste for black music while growing up in Washington D.C., where he and Ahmet would frequent the Howard Theater and scour the community for records by their favorite musicians. In 1944, he moved to Los Angeles to run the Jazzman Record Shop. While there he created his own label, Crescent Records (later Jazzman), on which he recorded the likes of Kid Ory and Jelly Roll Morton. Nesuhi also served as editor of Record Changer magazine and taught the first accredited course in jazz offered in the U.S., at UCLA. In addition to founding the jazz division at Atlantic, Nesuhi later went on to spearhead the label’s international operations, expanding the business and opening up new markets overseas. After the merger of the Warner Brothers, Elektra and Atlantic labels in 1971, he headed WEA International. He later oversaw the special projects division of Warner Communications and launched East/West, a Atlantic-distributed label, in 1988.” (quote from Museum)
Sincerely,
Jon Hammond

I went to my yoga class this morning, and I finally think I felt my mind and body were quiet and I did not need to struggle to keep them quiet. So frequently I have been unable to stop the flurry of things I should be doing, concerns, hopes, and fears from flying through my thoughts even when in “Tadasana” in the stillness of a morning yoga class. Today it was no issue. All was quiet.

On the way home I was thinking about how I use to just do yoga at home and it was good, but never quite as satisfying. I use to resist the assistance of others, in yoga and in most things, but I have accepted that sometimes I need help to get where I want to go. My yoga class is just one example. I started humming this classic, “Lean on Me” as I walked home. If we all lean on each other, then we become a forest, right?

(OMG, yoga… Tadasana… forests… perhaps I am a hippie… an intellectual hippie though. Oh and I shower daily, so there!)
