The 140,000-square-foot College Center will serve as a hub for student services, including admissions, career services, financial aid and disabled students programs, according to college President Michael Claire’s office.

The center also houses a learning resources center, labs for the Digital Media Program, classrooms, a bookstore, dining rooms, and faculty and administration offices.

The College Center aims to achieve LEED Silver certification, according to the president’s office.

The ribbon-cutting and open house ceremony was open to the public, with an estimated several hundred people showing up for the festivities.

“It’s gorgeous, it’s beautiful,” one woman in the crowd remarked.

“That building felt like it was dying so when you have to learn in that environment you feel like oh man, maybe the journalism program is like a dying field,” reasoned journalism student Jeffrey Gonzales, whose classes used to take place in a 50-year-old building. “But when you have a building like this you feel more driven to complete whatever it is that you’re doing.”

The new building is part of a $220 million College of San Mateo design and construction project funded by voter-approved bonds.

That funding was especially welcome on campus, where students have been warned about the California Community College System’s dire budget circumstances. Most recently, Chancellor Jack Scott suggested that the 112-campus system may be forced to enroll tens of thousands fewer students and cut thousands of classes because of the state budget impasse and funding shortages.

The University of South Florida School of Music held the ribbon cutting ceremony on March 31 in the concert hall for the opening of their new building. After the ceremony, the audience was given a tour of the 113,535 square foot majestic high-tech structure.

The architecture firms, Hanbury Evans Writght Vlattas & Company of Tampa and Performance Architecture of New Orleans designed the building with meticulous precision for the music educator and performer in mind.

The building features a 485-seat concert hall, home of the “cloud,” a 32-ton vertically adjustable acoustical ceiling reflector system suspended above the stage. The “cloud” was designed by acoustic designer Charles Bonner, and consists of white panels that can adjust to change the air volume above the performers, altering the acoustical ambiance of the hall.

The hall has a modified “shoe box” shape with almost no straight lines. The side walls are slightly elliptical to ensure the timing of acoustic reflections is precise. The slope of the floor gives the audience the optimum lines of direct sound of from every seat.

According to the Hanbury Evans Wright Vlattas & Company architecture firm, challenging economic drivers inspired designers of the new School of Music to investigate somewhat unorthodox construction strategies to design a dramatic yet simple facility.

Along with the concert hall, the building has a 116-seat recital hall, a separate instrumental, choral and jazz rehearsal halls, a percussion suite and faculty studios and classrooms. All of the practice and performance rooms were built separately from the foundation, thus making them “floating” rooms within rooms. Multi layers of drywall, insulation, and air space separate each room, which have no parallel walls, eliminating any unwanted sound reflection.

“The USF School os Music is a facility that is beyond compare and one of the most difficult buildings to have been built on campus,” USF President Judy Genshaft said.

They major of Tampa, Pam Iorio, also made an appearance to the event.

“The Arts are really the soul of the university and with this new building, creativity will flourish. I am so glad to be celebrating my last day as mayor of this city celebrating The Arts,” Iorio said.

The overall budget for the project was approximately $46.6 million with $37.6 million in construction costs.

On Thursday, March 10, more than 100 guests watched as Dr. Kiran C. Patel cut the green ribbon blocking the doors to the Dr. Kiran C. Patel Center for Global Solutions and declared the new building open.

Before the ribbon cutting ceremony, USF president, Judy Genshaft, thanked Dr. Patel and his family for their $5 million donation, which was used to construct the four-story building located next to the Alumni Center on USF’s Tampa campus.

An esteemed member of the Indian-American community in Tampa, Dr. Patel told the crowd he donated the money in hopes that the building will house and promote international studies, philanthropy and research.

Winnie Qiao, a USF student studying finance and accounting, also spoke about the importance of international education, reflecting on her own experiences abroad.

“Experiencing culture abroad and first-hand, allows for an educational experience that goes beyond the bounds of the classroom,” Qiao said.

After the ribbon cutting, the glass doors leading to the building’s lobby were opened and guests were greeted by the melodic chants of the Tampa Bay Indian Community Choir. The choir’s performance enhanced the event’s theme — the importance of culture.

An important part of advancing Dr. Patel’s goal of encouraging international relationships and the importance of culture will be the work of USF World, formerly USF’s International Affairs program, which will now be headquartered in the Patel Center.

USF World advocates international outreach through its study-abroad program, Peace Corps and work with the Confucius Institute. With a new building to call home, USF World hopes to reach more students and engage them in the beauty of culture.

Today, University Officials, JSU Development Foundation Leaders, Public Officials, and Investors celebrated the opening of One University Place by hosting a ribbon cutting ceremony.  One University Place is a mixed-use development located on the corner of Dalton Street and John R. Lynch Street that features retail space on the ground floor and three floors of residential apartments above.  Residents have begun moving into the apartments while coming soon signs are posted that indicate that Express Cleaners, Harvey’s Fish Hut, and an Art Gallery are on the way.

One University Place is the first step toward a larger West Jackson development known as University Place that features single family homes, townhomes, and more mixed used developments.
