On August 15 at around noon, in the community of Ranchería Corozal, located in the Montes Azules Biosphere Reserve and a member community of the Rural Association of Collective Interests Union of Unions-Independent and Democratic (ARIC UU-ID, Asociación Rural de Interés Colectivo Unión de Uniones Independiente y Democrática) 2 naval helicopters arrived with Ricardo Frias, the head of the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (CONANP, Comisión Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas). Frias was accompanied by several representatives of the Office of the Seceretary of Agrarian Reform (SRA, Secretaria de Reforma Agraria) Office of the State Secretary of Interior as well as 50 members of the Mexican Army and the State Judicial Police.

According to a denunciation released by the ARIC UU-ID, after taking measurements of the community and the fields surrounding it, Frias stated that, “there will be no option other than relocation or compensation” for the land. he added that despite the negotiations that the ARIC UU-ID has held with the government regarding the case, “with the future changes in government the agreement will not be respected.”

The events of Ranchería Corozal coincided with another operation carried out in the communities of El Semental and Nuevo Salvador Allende (also located in the Montes Azules Reserve), in which the Mexican Army and Federal and State police agencies participated. The operation, headed by the Federal Environmental Protection Agency (Profepa, Procuraduría Federal de Protección al Ambiente), was carried out without incident as the inhabitants fled the area beforehand. In both cases, their houses were destroyed.

Following the operation, Juan Antonio Sandoval Flores, delegate from Profepa in Chiapas, stated that there exist another 11 irregular communities in the Montes Azules Reserve. He estimated that the relocation of these communities would end within the next year.

El 15 de agosto, a alrededor de las 12:00 PM, 2 helicópteros de la Marina llevaron el responsable de la Comisión Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas (CONANP), Ricado Frias, a la comunidad Ranchería Corozal ubicada dentro de la Reserva de la Biósfera de Montes Azules y perteneciente a la Asociación Rural de Interés Colectivo Unión de Uniones Independiente y Democrática (ARIC UU-ID). Fue acompañado por algunos representantes de la Secretaria de Reforma Agraria (SRA) y la Secretaría de Gobernación del Estado así como de 50 elementos del Ejército Federal y de la Policía Judicial del Estado.

Según una denuncia realizada por la ARIC UU-ID, después de realizar una medición de los potreros y el área de la comunidad, Frias declaró que “no habrá otro opción más que la reubicación o la indemnización”. Añadió que a pesar de las negociaciones que la ARIC UU-ID ha mantenido con el gobierno sobre el caso, “con los cambios de gobierno futuros los acuerdos ya no serán respetados”.

Este hecho coincidió con otro operativo realizado en las comunidades de El Semental y Nuevo Salvador Allende (también ubicadas en la Reserva de Montes Azules), en el cual participaron el Ejército Mexicano, la Policía Federal y la Policía Estatal, como reportado por La Reforma (15/08/08). El operativo, dirigido por la Procuraduría Federal de Protección al Ambiente (Profepa), fue llevado a cabo sin incidentes violentos como los pobladores habían salida del área de antemano. En ambos casos, sus casas fueron destruidas.

Posteriormente al operativo, según Juan Antonio Sandoval Flores, delegado de la Profepa en Chiapas, todavía quedan 11 comunidades irregulares más en la Reserva de Montes Azules. Estimó que las reubicaciones se terminarían el próximo año.
