This is a blog post for wannabe nerds.

So, you want the prestige of being a nerd? You want the smug smarminess of having seen EVERY SHOW on the sci-fi channel ( I refuse to call it syfy) without actually sitting through episodes of Lexx and Ghost whisper? Well I am here to help you seem like you know something. Here’s a nerd’s guide to Stargate Universe.

If you have never seen Stargate Universe, don’t worry, I’ll tell you what I do and don’t like about it. That way if you ever find yourself in a group of nerds you have a handy list to consult to make you seem like you’re in the know.

MUST KNOWS:

-Stargate SG-1 is the original. Basically a group of four people: Leader, sarcastic awesome cool guy Jack played by Macgyver- Richard dean anderson. Token girl/ science geek/ physicist GENIUS Sam. Cool arse, black, muscle alien Teal’c. And archeologIist, glasses wearing, oddly attractive nerd Daniel Jackson. Note: always call him Daniel Jackson, not Daniel. It gives you cred.) Ultimate enemies: The Goa’uld, the Ori.

Say this is your favourite in the franchise if you honestly have no idea about anything. That way you don’t have to back up the claim with anything substantial. You just have to say, “Yeah but I like it because it’s the original and the best.” and then make everyone else who likes stargate atlantis better feel inferior with haughty glares and smirk’s when they talk about the wraith.

- Stargate Atlantis is a shit-good spin off set in the Pegasus Galaxy. You might want to be more daring and say this is your favourite. Claim the main character, John Sheppard, is a bad arse who is younger and hotter than RDA ( if you dont know what these initials mean, may good have mercy on your soul). Say Rodney McKay is funny ( not annoying), and that Ronan Dex is way scarier than Teal’c. NOTE: You’re a newbie, so don’t get in over your head. Only people who have had much experience/ detailed argument can get away with saying taylor is the greatest character written. Main Enemy: Wraith

- Travel accross the stars is possible because of the stargate that uses wormholes to link planets. Ships do exist and are important though.

NOW ONTO UNIVERSE: This is helpful guide for both newbies AND seasoned stargate viewers who can’t be bothered with this new installment.

People might not agree with you, BUT if you say these standard things, they will not realise you haven’t actually seen it. Say these phrases ( even if you have no idea what they mean or who you are talking about) to appear legitimate:

1. Doctor Rush Is the Shit. If you don’t know who he is, don’t worry. Just keep saying ‘you can’t deny Robert Carlyle is a brilliant actor’

2. If you are among people who clearly have problems with the show, join in with the bitching to gain acceptance. The most obvious comment is: “It’s so stupid. They have magical stones which let people swap bodies. Why dont they get carter or rodney or Daniel Jackson in to solve the problem? And if they’re unavaialale, why not Jack? He would at least solve the stupid leadership problems.

3. If the group of nerds is divided the main thing to remember is to STAY COOL. Be in the middle so that no one hates you too much. Say “it’s a good idea, and a different spin on an established franchise. it is a bit soap opera-ish though.”

4. Don’t be timid. the worst mistake you can make is letting on about your ignorance. agree with people loudly. Speak confidently and give people looks of disgust, as though they know nothing. No one will suspect a thing if you act like an obnoxious, know-it -all.

NOW FOR MY PERSONAL GRIPES

So, you’ve made it through this blog and you have seen stargate universe? Good. I finally have someone to discuss it with.

1. started good but is rapidly becoming boring

2. The girls are shit. Why is it so hard for people to write and cast quality females? They’re always lame bitches. grr (note: I like Carter, so don’t get all up in my grill saying i don’t like any girls).

3. about the women on the ship. WTF IS WITH TJS HAIR?! IT IS SO FUCKING RIDICULOUS. IT MAKES ME WANT TO SLAP HER TO DEATH. seriously? Her hair is this idiotic perfect blonde do. They’re on a spaceship, out in the middle of the nowhere. In a galaxy with no other humans, let alone HAIR PRODUCTS. She is both in the army and a medic. I have NEVER seen anyone in those professions with hair like hers on a daily basis. Let alone people stranded on a ship where things are going wrong ALL THE TIME. It is like she is going to a formal/ prom with perfect, intricate twists. ARGH! *has tantrum* it is fucking ridiculous

Here’s a pic:

She has that hair ^^^^^^^ in space…. when they are always life- threatening emergencies…. and there’s no hair products…. and she is an army medic … and no one else notices she looks like she is about to go to a ball!

4. I WANT ALIENS, SHIP FIGHTS, ALLIANCES, PLAUSIBLE ENEMIES AND CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT THAT ISNT BORING AND OVER_DRAMATIC

5. There’s no sense of friendship and camaraderie. I didn’t know until I watched this, but I like the whole team thing.

6. i dont hate EVERYTHING. Obviously i am still watching. Robert Carlyle rocks and Rush is one of the few characters who is deep without being whiney/ soap opera-y or annoying. I appreciate that it is trying to be different, and a lot of the special effects are cool. Eli mentions star wars sometimes. that’s cool. I like that the stones are there as a way of contacting earth. I just wished that people who are supposed to be smart would grow a brain and send in people who are intelligent/ can read ancient to see if rush is lying/ have proper leadership skills. Keno’s have potential and so does a whole new area of space to be explored.

7. Can I get another story besides “we’re running out of ——- *insert vital need such as power, water, air, food, hairspray here*?

Okay so I no doubt will blog about this again. For the moment I am done ranting. Don’t be discouraged from watching stargate. It rocks. It brings joy to my life. Watch atlantis, especially season four. Watch the original. and try to watch universe. It does have potential and without support it could flop.

p.s maybe I should have introduced myelf/ talked about something worthwhile in my first blog?

This does not bode well for all the Stargate Fans who have been eagerly waiting for the next round of Stargate movies direct to DVD…

If you need more proof that the new “Stargate SG-1″ DVD is never going to get made, here it is: MGM Studios is seeking a buyer. The cash-strapped studio got permission from lenders to skip interest payments on loans through January as it seeks a merger or acquisition, possibly with Fox/News Corp., Time Warner, or Viacom. Rumors about a private equity fund also cropped up, but most reports have it that Lionsgate will come out ahead of a possibly bidding war. The New York Times values MGM at between $1.5 and $3 billion, down from the $5 billion that Comcast, Sony, and venture capitalists spent taking MGM private in 2004.

TBS’s new “The Very Funny Show” will debut November 19 at midnight, featuring stand-up comics talking about life on tour. The show will follow “Lopez Tonight.”

The CW is developing a medical school drama called “HMS.” Word is that Hayden Panettiere will executive produce it.

That’s it today. A worthless Browns/Ravens game is on “Monday Night Football” tonight. Enjoy.

Since the first film of the franchise was released in 1994, Stargate has captured the imagination of sci-fi fans the world over. Each incarnation of the franchise – including the mega-successful Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis – carries the hefty responsibility of steering the massive fan base to a new cast of characters and set of circumstances.

Film Production grad John G. Lenic is one of the key players doing just that for the franchise’s newest series, Stargate Universe. The series debuts on Space on October 2, 2009.

John recently took some time out of his schedule to shed some light on how he contributes to the Stargate world.

Hi, John. Could you start off by explaining your role in Stargate Universe, and what kinds of responsibilities it entails?

JGL: My role at Stargate Universe is that of the Producer. That means that along with my showrunners, Brad Wright and Robert Cooper, I am responsible for the financial well-being of the series. That includes the budget, management of the cast and crew, making sure we can bring in the series on budget and on schedule after shooting 20 episodes per season. We spend approximately $50 million per year and employ approximately 250 people during the course of our shooting season, which runs from February until October.

You’ve been with Stargate for a while now. How has the franchise changed?

JGL: I have been with the Stargate franchise since December of 1996. It has changed so much yet so little over the past 13 years. In my opinion the biggest thing to change over the course of the 3 series has been the cast. The cast really set the tone for how well a show can work. We have been so lucky, for the most part, to have a wonderful cast to work with everyday. Folks like Richard Dean Anderson, Amanda Tapping, Michael Shanks, Chris Judge, David Hewlett, Rachel Luttrell, Robert Carlyle, Louis Ferreira, and Ming-Na are a few of the people that have made the last 13 years such an amazing experience for me… such a pleasure to be around them and see them everyday.

The stories on Stargate Universe are also so different then the last two shows. The scripts this year have been more about relationships and the people as opposed to fighting the bad guy of the week. The dilemmas are much more internal and far deeper. I have to applaud the writers for the job they have done on the scripts thus far. The episodes are nothing short of ingenious.

For those who love Stargate, you are going to love this reinvention of the franchise, and for those of you who have never watched an episode, please watch the pilot as you will see that this show really is something new, and Robert Carlyle is phenomenal. I am personally very proud of the work we have done this year.

For the benefit of current students and recent grads, could you describe your start in the industry? How did you make the transition from VFS grad to Producer?

JGL: After VFS, my start in the industry came when a Canadian producer, Raymond Massey, came to scout my parents’ house for use in the feature film Whale Music. I told him that if he needed any help, I would do anything. He told me to come to his office the following week and he would buy me lunch. Well, after that lunch, I never left his office. I worked with his other assistant, Shauna Bryan (another VFS Film Production grad), except I did it for free for a while, just absorbing anything I could – from budgeting to scheduling – he showed it all to me. When we started prepping the movie, the company was able to pay me $25/week. I learned so much, and with the other friends and VFS grads that were hired on the show, I loved every minute of it and made some great life long friendships.

After that, I went on to be Tracey Jeffrey’s assistant on several TV movies of the week. I worked with her on 11 of these ultra low budget ($1,650,000 — 16 day shoot) movies. This was all about being creative, as we didn’t have much money.

In September/October of 1996, I remember hearing that Stargate was going to be shooting in Vancouver and wanting to work on it, because I knew it would give me the opportunity to learn so much about working with everything from special effects explosions to visual effects and green screens. I got a meeting with Michael Greenburg and Richard Dean Anderson and they hired me to run the day-to-day workings of their personal production company (Gekko Film Corp.) and take care of them on Stargate as well as development for their company, and all the other projects they had on the go at that time. As Gekko had a financial interest in the show, and with my knowledge of budgets and numbers, Mike and Rick relied on me to stay on top of the budgets and cost reports with their interest in mind.

From there, MGM announced during the first season that the show was going for four seasons, and we decided that development for Gekko should be put on hold while Stargate was still happening. At that point Brad Wright and MGM offered to get me a DGC membership and move me into a Unit Manager role, as I was performing that role already.

From that point on, I worked under N. John Smith and Brad Wright and they groomed me to take over as a Production Manager in Season 3 and so on and so forth, until they moved me into a Producer/Production Manager role in Season 8 of SG-1. After that, I went on to Atlantis as the Producer/Production Manager, and then into the position of Producer on Stargate Universe.

It was while working on Atlantis that David Hewlett and I became friends, and went on to produce a low-budget movie between seasons. We made A Dog’s Breakfast for $120,000, and MGM distributed it. We decided in October that, come hell or high water, we were going to make a feature in January and set that as the start date. David wrote the script, cast his sister and some Stargate alumni, and that was that. We did it. We set our minds to it and just made it happen.

What do you think is the most common mistake young film professionals make?

JGL: I know it will sound cliché, but it’s not truly believing in yourself. Never lose focus of what your end goal is, but know that it is going to take baby steps to get there. Make sure you really take the time to enjoy, learn, and focus on each step you take along the way.

Stargate has a large, vocal fan base. How does that affect your job?

JGL: The fans are fantastic and for as much as they are vocal about things that they don’t like, they applaud and are even more vocal and supportive about the things they like.

It has been hard with the new cast recently because they read everything and often get down on themselves when they read that people aren’t even going to give the new show a chance if Chris Judge or David Hewlett aren’t on it.

I feel bad for this new cast because they shouldn’t be made to feel that way. It isn’t fair when people knock something before even giving it a chance. The new cast is doing such a fantastic job, it is amazing how these fans affect their mood just by writing those sorts of things. It happened on Atlantis when SG-1 ended too, but it has been the topic of conversation several times in the last few months.

It looks like you’ve recently joined fellow Stargate alum David Hewlett on Twitter (twitter.com/jglenic). Why did you sign up?

JGL: Hewlett has been on there for a year or two, and I never really cared about telling people what I was up to, but now, most of the cast from Universe are on there, and I have had so much fun hearing and listening to the things they have written about on a daily basis. I guess you could say that I gave into the peer pressure to try it out. So far my favorites are David Hewlett, Ming-Na and David Blue. They always have something interesting to say. If my perspective can help people, or if I can answer questions that help others on their career path, then I am glad to be a part of it.

After one look at your IMDB page, it’s clear that there’s been a steady upward progression in your career. What do you hope to do next?

JGL: For now, I love the show I am working on and the people I work with. It is important to me to focus on working with people that I want to be around and developing projects that I would want to see. I have a few things in development, and I think it is time to make another feature. I will keep you posted.

Please do!

Best of luck with Stargate Universe, John!

The working title for the next Stargate SG-1 movie has been revealed. Stargate: Revolution will reunite the cast of the long-running show, including former lead Richard Dean Anderson.

The title has announced at Stargate writer-producer Joseph Mallozzi’s blog.

Revolution will be the third DVD movie for the SG-1 team — if it gets made, that is. After reportedly giving the production a green light this past spring (story), MGM placed it back in drydocks along with the Atlantis movie, Stargate: Extinction.

As of last spring, the intention was to shoot one or both of the movies this fall, with the SG-1 film apparently taking priority in the production schedule. But continuing economic pressures have prevented MGM from committing just yet (story).

Stargate: The Ark of Truth and Stargate: Continuum filmed in 2007 and were released in 2008.

The script for the SG-1 movie has been written by Brad Wright and Carl Binder, who are currently serving as executive producers on Stargate Universe, with a story reportedly set sometime between Continuum and the start of SGU. Wright told fans at this year’s Vancouver Stargate convention that “I had a story idea that really worked with O’Neill. And it’s not just his character, by any means. It’s a Stargate story that brings O’Neill back in a big way.”

Seems like Stargate Universe has hit a bump in the road or to put it in more appropriate vernacular, a huge asteroid belt. On October 31, 2009, longtime Stargate writer, Joseph Mallozzi, left an ill-conceived rant on his popular blog denouncing disgruntled fans who had posted crude and negative opinions over various internet sources, such as twitter, syfy and even his own blog, all voicing their extreme displeasure about the new incarnation of Stargate. There are now over 500 posts on Mr. Mallozzi’s Blog with regard to only this topic.

On October 1, 2009, Maureen Ryan of the Chicago Tribune on wrote her own unflattering review of SGU, mirroring what the fans had been saying, which in turn stirred up Brad Wright, one of the producers of Stargate Universe, who slammed back with his own rebuttal which can be found in Ms. Ryan’s second article on November 8, 2009, where she claims that she has now stopped watching Stargate Universe.

So far it looks like everyone is losing in this Stargate tug of war. The writers and producers of the show seem entrenched in their belief that if the fans don’t like it, then that’s too bad and the fans are responding by not watching the show and posting about it everywhere.

SGU’s ratings have fallen almost 18% in the US not long after it’s phenomenal premiere at the beginning of October from 1.974 million viewers to 1.626 million viewers as of last Friday’s episode.

SPOILER ALERT!! - With the situation onboard the Destiny dire, General O’Neill (Richard Dean Anderson) and Home World Command orders Colonel Young (Louis Ferreira) to execute a high risk plan by the IOA (International Oversight Authority) scientists which, in theory, could return the crew to Earth. The colonel tries to buy more time so that he can consult those on the ship whose lives are at stake.
This review is of a brand new show in the Stargate family called Stargate Universe. Not even halfway

This review is of a brand new show in the Stargate family called Stargate Universe. Not even halfway through the first season and I feel it necessary to tell people just how good this show is so far.

Stargate Universe stems away from the cheekiness of both Stargate, and Stargate Atlantis(which I loved), by being a bit darker. This show has a lot more drama to it than we’re used to from the Stargate creators, but fear not, there is still some comic relief. The acting and writing is excellent. Only slightly annoying is Chloe Armstrong, but maybe it’s because she needs bangs. I’m not giving up on her yet.

Stargate Universe is really spectacular. The basic plotline starts when a team of soldiers, scientists, and civilians escape a distant planetary annihilation by gating through a unique Stargate that only goes to one unknown location. This place ends up being an ancient spaceship that was launched over a million years ago that’s mission is to deliver Stargates in uncharted territories of the Universe so that one day, human kind can reach all depths of space.

The story evolves around the lives of the people who are now stuck in this amazing yet dangerous situation on a mysterious ship called Destiny that’s leading its own way to the unknown. They don’t know if they’ll ever make it back to Earth.

There are plenty of surprises on this show so far. The characters are intriguing, and the dialogue is captivating. I will definitely keep tuning in on Friday nights. Lead actors include: Robert Carlyle as Dr. Rush, Louis Ferreira as Colonel Young, and David Blue as Eli Wallace.

I’ll also add that even if you didn’t watch any of the Stargate shows, this particular show can stand on its own and be appreciated regardless. I just wish I didn’t have to wait a whole week until the next episode.

Well, nobody came down with a case of the warm fuzzies for the third part of STARGATE UNIVERSE’s ini

Well, nobody came down with a case of the warm fuzzies for the third part of STARGATE UNIVERSE’s initial story, “Air.” Everyone still barely tolerates everyone else – at best. To me, this dynamic worked even better this week, because it was believable that nerves would be frayed as the breathable atmosphere was consumed. There was not much support for pulling together for the greater good, and making their last breaths meaningful or noble. Newly sown grudges were maintained, and the appearance of Col. Telford simply added more fuel to the fire.

While Rush and Scott led an expedition to an unknown planet looking for lime to repair the air scrubbers, the rest of the crew remained aboard Destiny and squabbled about what to do. From Earth, Telford and Dr. Mehta switched bodies with Col. Young and Chloe, so Chloe could to tell her mother about her father’s death and Young could report to Gen. O’Neill. Telford used the switch to inspect Destiny. Or rather, try to. Telford was shocked to find Young’s body badly wounded, yet he insisted on pushing the injured body to extremes while stalking about the ship, tearing the trapped crew new ones. What a jerk! I know Telford feels guilty because he was supposed to lead the team through the gate to the ninth chevron location, but he should have vacated Young’s body and switched with someone else. (On another note, maybe the crew lucked out that the taskmaster didn’t get to make the trip!) Props to Lou Diamond Phillips for playing unsympathetic. Bravo to TJ for sedating Telford! And I have to take one tiny issue with Jack’s assertion that no one is “qualified” to go through the gate; as I recall, O’Neill was selected for the original (suicide) mission because he felt he had nothing left to live for after the death of his son. That’s a sort of qualification (although, technically, not specifically for stargate travel. But I digress…).

Meanwhile, the planet Rush, Scott, Eli, Greer, Franklin, Palmer and Curtis visited was so barren it didn’t even have a DHD, but luckily the expedition brought along a portable dialer. The location filming at White Sands, N.M., was very effective in establishing the empty wasteland planet. The empty expanses really felt…well, empty. Even in this inhospitable environment, people kept fighting with each other. Rush was his pompous self, and Greer seemed more short-tempered than usual, which was not a good mix. It’s a tribute to the show that I briefly thought Greer might actually shoot Rush! And my jaw dropped when Rush ordered Greer to shoot Franklin – and he did! The clincher was when Palmer and Curtis decided to strike off on their own and try one of the other addresses. That kind of insubordination would never happen on SG-1 or even STARGATE: ATLANTIS. And there were consequences for their rebellion: Palmer and Curtis were left behind when Destiny returned to light speed.

Although I did not understand the precise mechanism that triggered the memories (hallucination or alien life form?), I enjoyed learning about Scott’s background. His parents died in a car crash when he was 4, and the priest who raised him drank himself to death when Scott was 16. Scott was going to become a priest himself, but he got a girl pregnant and dropped out of seminary. That is not a typical back-story, and I give SGU major points for that. But the show also loses major points for making Mrs. Armstrong a ridiculous cliché: the wealthy, patrician woman who self-medicates with too much booze to compensate for an absent, workaholic husband. How boring! And shockingly lazy on this show.

Still, overall, SGU is anything but lazy. It is challenging to watch, and (so far) not boring.

Anthony ********* – is “lets think about this, its not something you wait for, its something you go after”

- You sure gave me a lot to think about. Like that time I wrote Richard Dean Anderson about an idea I had for an episode of Macgyver. I’ve waited 17 years for him to write me back and still nothing, but after reading your status update, I’ve decided to write him again to see if he got my letter. If that doesn’t work then I’ll find out where he likes to eat dinner, reserve a table in a dark corner, and wait patiently until he arrives. When the time is right, preferably when he goes to the restroom, I’ll follow Macgyver into the bathroom and surprise him with a 3rd letter asking if he got my first 2 letters. Thanks Anthony! You’re the smartest jackass guy ever.

SPOILER ALERT!! - With the air supply failing on the Destiny, a team gates to a desert-like planet in Air: Part 2 to search for the mineral needed to scrub the ship’s air of carbon dioxide. After testing numerous sand samples without success, and with their window of opportunity closing fast, the group opts to split into two to cover more ground, despite the unbearable heat. While one team presses on to find the treasured mineral, the other has another goal in mind. When it is apparent that Dr. Rush (Robert Carlyle) can’t go on, Lt. Scott (Brian J. Smith) decides to go it alone and orders Sergeant Greer (Jamil Walker Smith) to return to safety with the exhausted scientist. Meanwhile, with life on the ship looking bleak, and with the aid of the communication stones, Colonel Young (Louis Ferreira) reports in to General O’Neill (Richard Dean Anderson) and Chloe (Elyse Levesque) has one last chance to see her mother. Air: Part 2 airs Friday night, October 9th @ 9 p.m. EST on The Syfy Channel.

While I’m writing this I am actually watching Bones (Ep.3 I totally guessed he was amish. Love

While I’m writing this I am actually watching Bones (Ep.3 I totally guessed he was amish. Love Booth! To death! I wish he were real). But right before that I watched the new installment of the Stargate franchise. I’ve been a fan since my hair was black and I wore tie-dye. Our family tv didn’t receive broadcast so I owned this absolutely tiny ancient tv you might take on a road trip or a boat trip. It was black and white and that’s where I watched Stargate SG1 every saturday night at 11 on Fox! Wow! I can’t believe I remember that. That was in the 90’s before cable was really big and sci-fi picked em up. What are now classic episodes were fresh new installments, I can’t believe how old I sound (only going to get older from here). I have to admit I didn’t get into Stargate Atlantis, but Stargate Universe might have had some good bait . First off (spoiler alert!) Eli. Pretty much the hero of the show. It was absolutely ridiculous and at the same time brilliant to have this character represent the majority fan base of the television show and have him act out their wildest dreams.
A young stocky moderately pasty average guy gets a knock on his front door *knock*knock* oh shit! There’s colonel O’neil!! Just for playing a video game!!! Genius!!! Now there is no way the majority fan base will not watch this show because they’ve written a character so completely relatable to them it’s like watching their own day dreams (and perhaps night dreams) come true. “My girlfriend says I won’t amount to anything if I keep playing MMORPGs. But Stargate Universe says you can be beamed up and travel galaxies for trying really hard at them!”.
Genius. Right now. How do you keep a show fresh that is still alive because of it’s ridiculously huge fan base? Put the fan in the show. I know StarGate is unique for being so well loved by people beyond the stereotypical nerdy teenager. I pretty comfortable saying I am not a teenage boy, a gamer or moderately overweight, nor is my mom who is an avid fan. Again, it wouldn’t be around if it wasn’t.

But speaking of my mom. A strong asian lady. Ming-Na’s character I am hoping will reveal more charisma or depth or something more interesting because I was really rooting for her to grab me and it didn’t happen. But I will definitely continue watching to find out more about these people. I also read an article that reveals that Ming-Na’s character is a lesbian and I am really curious as to how they will reveal that and utilize that in the narrative of the show. If she is a lesbian then there must be another lesbian for her to have dramatic relations with no? Or will it be a completely subtle sexuality? Or will she get in trouble for hitting on a straight girl? Doubt it. But I have no idea. But apparently it’s a big deal because it is the first Asian-lesbian character in television history to be a series regular.

Anyway, those are the thoughts that stuck with me after this viewing. OH! and the opening title sequence was kickass. Shivers. I swear there were shivers. Oh. I also am really annoyed with the Nick Rush character, but I think that is the way we are suppose to feel about him right now. The writers need a love hate character to play with in every show.

Well that’s it for now! Next week! woo woo can’t wait. Let me know what you guys thought! Oh. I also can’t wait for the season premier of South Park in two days!

I would like to start off by admitting that I have never watched any of the other Stargate series. Y

I would like to start off by admitting that I have never watched any of the other Stargate series. Yes, years ago I saw the original movie in the theaters, and yes I remember liking it – but I just never started in on the shows.

With the cancellation of Stargate Atlantis, (and I think the rest of the Stargate series) added to the ending of BSG and people trying to fill that fracking void – …well… I give you Stargate Universe.

It took me two sitting to make it through the 2 hour series premier that originally aired on Syfy this past Friday (October 2nd) and not because it was bad, I’m just a busy person. (That would be the very reason I’ve stated over and over again that I would be in no way, shape or form picking up any new shows… seems I’m a liar head too…)

I’m going to start, as of this moment, following Stargate Universe. Why? Well, I really liked it. Yes – there are the cliche rolls, like how the video game math wizard is chubby and quick witted – not to say that can’t be true, but the over use of stereo-types can be annoying from time to time.

The cold scientist.

The smart asian.

The forlorn woman. (and it can only be caused by a man… probably a married one…)

Yes, it’s all there, even the Senator’s daughter in her cute pink coat – but I still think it has potential to fill my need for BSG. Oh, yeah. I’ll say it. With its green/gray hues, the dingy space craft that our new friends were forced into floats through space using its FTL drive. They even created floating cameras to give us that “hand held” feel – but that’s just looking at it in a negative light.

Everyone can be the pessimist.

Let’s look at the good stuff.

Robert Carlyle as Dr. Rush. We already know that he’s a great actor and he nails the character. He give you the chills, then slightly annoys you but two second later you find yourself relating to him. He is stuck between a rock and a hard place (his life long ambitions and the fact that he opened a gate to near certain death for a bunch of people.)

David Blue as Eli Wallace. I’m looking over his imdb page and see that he’s been in two shows I’ve watched (Scrubs, Veronica Mars) but I can’t say I place him, BUT I will remember him now. Yes, his character can be considered a cliche, but I think he’s doing a nice job at showing someone who would be overly amazed to find out all that weird sci/fi stuff was true – and I appreciate his compassion.

He is the ying to Rush’s yang.

The cast in general. I could sit here and name off each actor I like, but so far I’m doing fine, and I think that you should give the show a chance. What’s the worse that could happen? It sucks… well, then you can turn the station, but for now – set your DVR for Fridays at 9pm on SyFy – but I think they may have hit the jackpot.

(Season 1, Episodes 1 & 2)

I remember seeing the Stargate film, but because the original Stargate: SG-1 got its start on Showtime, I missed that bandwagon. Back then, I was college poor. So, as I had a tendency to do when I missed the start of something, I continued to miss ten seasons of SG-1 and five of Atlantis.

But Stargate Universe promised a “new beginning,” as it were, An opportunity to jump into the Stargate television universe even if you don’t know the past ten years of continuity.

Right away, I saw how that could be. This was like some crazy mixture of Lost and Star Trek: Voyager. I mean that in a good way.

Things moved along pretty slowly considering we got the first two episodes in this two-part premiere. We also got to see Richard Dean Anderson, Amanda Tapping and Michael Shanks from the original series (and I believe Tapping went on to Atlantis as well). See, I know some stuff.

One of the biggest surprises for me was Col Everett Young. Justin Louis was an unknown to me a month ago, until I stumbled upon Ion’s Canadian import Durham County. There, Louis played an absolute psychopath, but the character was so rich. The man has acting chops, so hopefully he heals up and sticks around.

I was glad it was the Senator who sacrificed himself to save everyone else. You knew someone was going to have to, and considering the extent of his injuries, and the fact that he implied he needs regular medication to stay alive due to his heart condition, he was a “dead man walking” for sure. Might as well go saving everyone.

And as a creepy memorial, anyone can walk to that bay and look through the door and see his body just sitting there. That’s not disturbing at all.

I like the inclusion of Eli, because he’s me. He has really no idea what’s going on, doesn’t get the significance of a ninth chevron, but is enjoying the ride. I like that he’’s the one who’s coming up with good ideas, and even found those nifty floating camera balls.

Which brings me to what will possibly be the coolest thing about the show. The Destiny. A ship launched unmanned thousands of years ago with a Stargate on it so the Ancients could jump on board when it got further out (like where it is now) is so cool. Just imagine all the cool things the put on the ship.

And if the crew ever gets an idea of how to control it, all bets are off. I’m betting that particular feat is a ways away, but I’m sure the camera balls are just the tip of the iceberg.

And then they cut the episode on the cusp of our first trip off the ship and onto a world the ship believes will help with whatever it’s problem is. I’m digging the concept tremendously. They did manage to make a decade-old property accessible to a casual viewer, and it looks like they were rewarded with stellar ratings (beating out FOX’s Dollhouse head-to-head … of course, that’s less impressive when you consider how horrible Dollhouse is doing).
