Just wanted to give you all a heads up that over the weekend the blog posting maybe a little odd. It

Just wanted to give you all a heads up that over the weekend the blog posting maybe a little odd. It will either increase or decrease. You might get like five posts over a two day period or you might get none or maybe it’ll be one a day as usual.

I’m having a very vagually planned but rather busy weekend. Anna whose recent absence from the blog is due to computer troubles may get her computer back or may not so you may or may not be hearing from us over the next three days.

Game coverage on Twitter might be normal on Saturday even if the blog isn’t but my access to the Internet is questionable and Anna’s is also. Anna usually covers Twitter during the games since regular season started any how but I’ve been covering it the past couple games and I hope I haven’t been too boring. (not used to having to restrain some of my thoughts that I’d usually spew out on my perosnal account)

So that’s that!

And, for some reason during the Thrashers game I started to think about how much I miss Richard Zednik. I wish he hadn’t gone to the KHL but then agian if I played for the Florida Panthers I’d just get the hell out of there too! I miss seeing him on the Caps. Kind of like how some Caps fans miss Zubrus except I never liked Zubrus very much. (he was good, and I was surprised when we traded him at the time, but he was also kind of unpleasant personality wise) I mean I know Zednik wasn’t the biggest point producer but I miss him anyhow. But, I could be totally insane. (and missing Zednik makes me think of Feds which STILL makes me extremely sad but Feds had been my favorite player since I was into hockey so that at least makes sense)

Okay that’s it folks! We take on those Islanders saturday. But don’t think it’ll be a cake walk.

Oh and expect and short but sweet rub in the face of all the haters post on Schultz. I believed in him and backed him with his stats before he decided to show everyone else too so HAHA! I win. That’ll be later for now rest easy.

Ps. How freaking sweet was that goal?!

The NHL Awards concluded not too long ago, and while the choices for musical entertainment were a bi

The NHL Awards concluded not too long ago, and while the choices for musical entertainment were a bit, uh, questionable, I highly enjoyed myself for the most part.

The NHL does this wonderful thing each year at the awards where they bring the nominees in for a photo shoot while they’re all dressed up and looking nice. The results are usually fantastic, and the pose choices for this year were no exception.

I thought I’d start off with a picture of Alex, since, you know, he’s a ferocious badass and won three awards. That’s actually why the last two reasons are being used up tonight. Because, um, three awards gets you two reasons for love. My math skills are rad.

But poor math aside, once again this was Alex’s night. (Because, alas, Candy Corn Head could not wrestle the spotlight away from him.) Since I’m apparently a terrible fan I never realized that his grandfather had actually passed on, so when he said that in his speech I got all choked up. I think he did too. Can I just say, that if he had started crying, I would have been sobbing.

When he and Malkin went up for their scoring hardware, I was highly amused when Geno congratulated him. He turned to the right even though Alex was on the left, and when he turned back Alex shifted over. Maybe you kind of had to be in my head, but it was hilarious up there.

Then he won the Hart trophy and did his hot stick celebration with it. Don Cherry’s gonna be pissed. Then he promised a Cup in DC next year. I like a man with confidence, I really do. I hope that’s the case next year, because I have little hope in the Sabres pulling it together that quickly.

But back to the picture. One of the popular poses tonight was adjusting your tie, as Alex is. He also has a cute little grin/smirk thing going on, and you can still see the red in his hair. Maybe it’s because I’ve been mad at him for the past week and tonight made me forgive him, but I think this picture is just goofy enough to work. And as my mother will be quick to point out, you can’t see his missing tooth.

Maybe it’s just me, but good ol’ Geno looked kinda pissed at first when Alex won. His girlfriend also looked kind of skanky, but again, maybe it was just me. I do, however, like this picture, although only because it’s so bad. I think the photographer was looking for a tough, manly, crossed-arms pose, but what he got was Malkin going, “Like this? I put arms on elbows like this?”

I’m kind of sad Kris didn’t win, even though he was up against hard competition in Mason, but this picture makes up for it. I think the point of this pose is to put us in awe of the players’ strong build and tall bodies, but all this does is make Kris look a tad bit confused. And a little bit angry. I love the tie, but the hair has got to go. Sorry, Kris (and Cari). I just don’t think it works on you.

But I really appreciate his decision to not wear Lacoste. I was ready to fly out there and punch him if he did.

Oh, Michael. Michael, Michael, Michael. There are so many things wrong with this picture, but at the same time so many things right. It isn’t exactly a secret that I have been furious with Michael since the playoffs started, but when he showed up on that red carpet with his stupid mohawk and his smart little bowtie, my heart kind of melted. Damn you for making me love you again, Michael. Damn you.

I was really surprised to see Chara take home the Norris because I figured that even if Michael didn’t win, Lidstrom would. Whatever, Michael. You didn’t deserve the award.

However, I do think he managed to pull off a successful picture. Unlike some players (coughMalkincough) he seemed to understand how to cross his arms, and that and the slight bend in his knee is enough to give the picture a sassy tone without being too sassy. I also actually kind of like the facial expression. It looks like he tweezed his eyebrows again before hitting the show. I think he was trying to go for an alluring face.

And I’m glad his mommy could be there with him.

I consider this picture to be a win, even if the player in it didn’t do that. He’s got the right amount of smile and the right amount of folded arm, but it’s not too in your face. I’m also a huge fan of his suit.

And his name is Niklas Backstrom, and we all know how much I love men with that name.

In this pose, we have Mr. Parise attempting to put his hands on his hips. While his smile definitely gets a ten (as the puckbunnies who make bumper stickers on Facebook would say, “his face was crafted by angels”), I’m not so sure about the rest of it. It just doesn’t seem like a natural pose for Zach. It almost comes off cute, in the “aww look at the little boy trying to pose” kind of way. And it definitely looks awkward for him.

And then there’s Candy Corn Head. Oh, Candy Corn Head. I simply adore you. I’m so happy you got to take home two trophies and I loved your speeches. You’re such an eloquent speaker, even though your English is “short.” (And, did you tell the rest of the Russians to inform us that their English, too, is short? Because it seems like they all were saying it.) There’s nothing you could do to make me stop loving you, unless you defected to Russia. You seem like the nicest guy, and very humble. I wish you nothing but happiness.

Speaking of defections, WHY was everybody all, “Yo, Sergei, we love you, we’re letting you present the Hart Trophy, we’re calling you a Capital. It’s all good”????? He is signing with Russia. That’s what he wants to do. It was so annoying seeing him sitting there and just looking so happy when all along he was probably thinking happy thoughts about the KHL. He is supremely annoying.

And the sad thing is, if for some reason he should end up with the Caps next year I’ll probably love him again.

But all in all, I thought the awards were fun. TimTom was all cute for both of his awards, Jarome Iginla further convinced me that when I win the lottery and buy the Sabres I have to bring him in to be captain, and somehow Richard Zednik didn’t win the Masterton. That was the only one that truly perplexed me. Dude had his throat cut open and almost died last season and came back to play this season. But whatevs.

Now we get to look forward to the draft and, more importantly, Free Agency Day!!

You can tell a hockey fan is starved for hockey news when try actually blog about being excited for

You can tell a hockey fan is starved for hockey news when try actually blog about being excited for an annual awards show. I’m not a big fan of any awards shows, but in this case, the NHL’s Las Vegas awards show might give me a 2 hour hockey fix.

Between the awards show, the latest on Jim Balsillie and Bryan Burke ripping Dany Heatley, I’m hoping its enough to tide us hockey fans before next weekend’s NHL Entry Draft in Montreal. If not, we could always bring back Handshake-gate.

So anyways, with the NHL awards hours away and since we need to make up for some less-than-stellar Stanley Cup playoff picks, here’s my shot at predicting the award winners, without any noise (logic, reasoning, etc…).

What do your picks look like?

Hart Memorial Trophy (most valuable player, voted by media)
Winner: Alex Ovechkin – Washington Capitals
Runners up: Pavel Datsyuk – Detroit Red Wings, Evgeni Malkin – Pittsburgh Penguins

Vezina Trophy (goaltender of the year)
Winner: Tim Thomas – Boston Bruins
Runners up: Steve Mason – Columbus Blue Jackets, Niklas Backstrom – Minnesota Wild

Norris Trophy (defenseman of the year)
Winner: Zdeno Chara – Boston Bruins
Runners up: Nicklas Lidstrom – Detroit Red Wings, Mike Green – Washington Captials

Calder Trophy (rookie of the year)
Winner: Steve Mason – Columbus Blue Jackets
Runners up: Bobby Ryan – Anaheim Ducks, Kris Versteeg – Chicago Blackhawks

Selke Trophy (best defensive forward)
Winner: Pavel Datsyuk – Detroit Red Wings
Runners up: Ryan Kessler – Vancouver Canucks, Mike Richards – Philadelphia Flyers

Jack Adams Trophy (coach of the year)
Winner: Todd Mclellan – San Jose Sharks
Runners up: Claude Julien – Boston Bruins, Andy Murray – St. Louis Blues

Lady Byng Trophy (most sportsman player at an elite level)
Winner: Pavel Datsyuk – Detroit Red Wings
Runners up: Marty St. Louis – Tampa Bay Lightning, Zach Parise – New Jersey Devils

Lester B. Pearson Trophy (MVP, voted by players)
Winner: Alex Ovechkin – Washington Capitals
Runners up: Pavel Datsyuk – Detroit Red Wings, Evgeni Malkin – Pittsburgh Penguins

Bill Masterson Trophy (perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey)
Winner: Richard Zednik – Florida Panthers
Runners up: Steve Sullivan – Nashville Predators, Chris Chelios – Detroit Red Wings

The most intriguing award of the night will be the Rookie of the Year; Bobby Ryan vs Steve Mason… though call. Ultimately, Mason bailed out the Blue Jackets and got them into the playoffs.

I’m sure most of you have seen this, but those that have not, Adam Burish must have some feline traits in him. Clearly he has used up 2 of his 9 lives, that we know about. His first, was the car accident he was in as a teenager, and now almost getting his neck sliced open by teammate Ben Eager. When you watch the video, Burish does not have much of a reaction when Eager’s skate cuts him. He knew the blade had made contact, but he checked for blood and kept going. Of course, this was eerily reminiscent to the Richard Zednik incident last year. And who could forget about Buffalo’s Malarchuck getting his throat severly cut. (Warning, this video is graphic) Luckily for Adam he was just grazed and will be OK to play in tonight’s Game 2.

Immediately after the game NHL.com’s Adam Kimelman caught up with Adam Burish to get his thoughts. Burish had some interesting things to say about the incident with Eager’s skate, and his presence in the lockerroom. Nothing says NHL playoffs like considering a punch in the face as something positive.

DETROIT – Adam Burish knew immediately there was a problem.”I saw his skate come right up my throat, and right away I grabbed my neck and said there’s something coming out here,” Burish said. “There were a couple drips, so I was pretty darn lucky.”
It was the second period, and Burish and linemate Ben Eager were forechecking in the Detroit zone when Eager and a Detroit player got tied up. Eager lost his balance and his skate flew up and clipped Burish in the throat.

It was a play reminiscent to the scary Richard Zednik incident last season, when Olli Jokinen’s skate blade sliced Zednik’s jugular vein.

But Burish was more fortunate; he skated away from Eager’s out-of-control skate knowing he was a lucky man.

“I don’t know how I’m so darn lucky,” Burish said. “It was centimeters, millimeters away from slicing (his throat).”
Eager said he had no idea he had nearly injured his linemate, but Burish could remember the whole thing.

“I don’t know how my head is still connected here,” he said. “I saw his skate — it was like he did a figure skating move and kind of whipped his skate up. I just watched it go right into my neck.”

Remarkably, not only was Burish not severely injured, he didn’t need stitches and didn’t miss a shift. After the game, there was almost no trace of the wound. Even after nearly suffering what could have been a life-altering injury, Burish wore a smile with his neat suit; he joked that his mother watching at home would probably be more upset than he was.

“Probably harder for my mom to shake if she was watching on TV,” Burish said. “You just kind of forget about it.”

Besides nearly getting his throat cut, Burish turned in his usual strong, agitating effort. He scored the game’s first goal on a turnover in front of the Detroit net, took two shots in 12:30 of ice time. He also took a four-minute cross-checking penalty for hitting Kris Draper in the game’s final minute.

“Burr brings it every night,” Eager said. “He’s got a lot more skill than people give him credit for. He’s been one of our best players in the playoffs. … He plays hard every night. He finishes all his checks, he likes to get in your face, he goes to the net and stays there until you move him. That bothers people and that’s what makes him effective.”

Burish has been especially effective in the playoffs. The goal in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals was his third in 13 playoff games, following a regular season where he scored just six times in 66 games.

He’s also racked up 26 penalty minutes, second on the team. He may play like the Western Conference’s version of Sean Avery, but Burish leaves that persona on the ice — he’s one of the more popular players in the Blackhawks’ locker room.

“The guys on my team, they understand what I’m trying to do,” Burish said. “When the game’s done, when hockey’s done, I leave it in the dressing room, I leave it on the ice, that’s it for me. I’m not the same person off the ice that I am on the ice. My mom asks me the same question, ‘Why do you act like that out there? Why are you fighting? Why are you yelling at guys out there? Why don’t you just play? Marty Havlat looks nice out there; why don’t you act like Marty Havlat out there?’ I said ‘that’s not me, mom.’

“I think the neat thing about hockey is guys do understand that when it’s done, it’s done, and you can still be a pretty good guy off the ice even though you’re a jerk on the ice.”

In his second full NHL season, Burish has embraced the role of villain.

“I love it. I love every second of it,” Burish said. “I like when I see guys get mad at me, I can tell they hate me. I can hear them say it to (the media), ‘That Burish is an idiot, he’s a clown.’ I want to hear that. That makes me feel good.”

Burish was asked which he liked better — scoring a goal or drawing a penalty.

“Scoring a goal is always fun,” he said. “It’s always fun to contribute that way. But when you see a guy get pretty ticked off, punch you in the face, that’s good, too.”

Better a punch in the face rather than a skate.

When I got home today I was excited to see that the Masterton Trophy nominees had been announced because I thought for sure that I would see Teppo’s name among them. But what did I see? HUH? You really want to know? THIS, THIS IS WHAT I SAW.

Chelios, Sullivan, Zednik named Masterton Trophy finalists

I’m sorry WHAT!?!?!?!

Chris Chelios? Re-he-heally?

Dear Hockey Gods,

Do you hate Buffalo that much?

Love,

Kim

Because I’m pretty sure that fracturing your tibia (the larger bone in the lower leg) is nowhere equal to having your chest cracked open and having your still beating heart poked and prodded by a lot of sharp instruments.

I know Chelio is 47 and yeah it’s great that he’s still playing all the power to the old guys but seriously shouldn’t he be using his hockey stick as a cane by now? He played 28 games this year and didn’t register a point but APPARENTLY he played a big role behind the scenes which was obviously enough to warrant his nomination for an award that is given to the player “who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to ice hockey”. Just because the guy is old doesn’t mean that he deserves to be recognized for it. Let me know when I can come at his beating heart with a scalpel I’ll be first in line.

The other finalists were Steven Sullivan who suffered a back injury in 2007 and had two back surgeries to correct the problem. He is one of three players to have played for a team, missed 600 consecutive days and return to the same team. The other is Richard Zednik who’s life was almost tragically cut short here in Buffalo when his former teammate Olli Jokinen’s skate hit him in the throat, severing his carotid artery. (Scariest moment of my life right there)

It’s not like I expected Teppo to win being up against the guy who had his throat cut open and almost bleed to death on the ice and another who broke his back and after almost two years returned to active duty. But Teppo deserves every ounce of respect that he gets from his teammates, the coaches and his fans. He could have hung up his skates after last season and no one would have blamed him. But he chose to come back for the last game of the season to prove that he still had what it takes to be a player in the National Hockey League.

I’m predicting, to no ones surprise, that Richard Zednik will walk away with the trophy and if he doesn’t it’s a great disservice to him and to the doctors and medical staff that made it possible for him to even play again.

I was really happy when I saw Teppo got nominated – because coming back from open heart surgery to play when you’re 40 years old is quite an accomplishment – but let’s be honest. Richard Zednik had his artery sliced open and almost died. He has this award locked up, and I really don’t have a problem with that. (Although Brian Pothier’s story is pretty heart-warming too…)

______________________________________________________

I just thought you should know that all day I have been going up to people and reminding them that the Funnest Week of Hockey Ever starts tonight. The Sabres are in Atlanta to play the outrageously frustrating Thrashers tonight, they face my beloved Caps on Friday, and then Sunday afternoon the Caps and Thrashers play each other. I have told you this before, but I’m saying it again. I have also said before that if I was a true, diehard Thrashers fan (but does that species even exist?) I would be so effing mad at this team. They sucked royally for the first three or four months before turning it up. Thrashers, there is absolutely no point in losing the first thirty games of the season and then winning five straight. That does nothing but screw over your chances of getting the first pick. Either be good for the entire season, or be bad.

And please don’t trade Ilya to LA. I could handle a trade to Montreal, because then he’d be in our division, but do not trade him to LA. I will never see him again if you do, and that would make me very sad.

My friend’s dad is going to be on Jeopardy Friday night but we’re DVRing it so I can watch the Caps. I decided if for some odd reason the Sabres should lose (5-3) tonight I’ll have to root for the Caps because at that point the Sabres’ season will be over and the Caps need to take advantage of New Jersey’s current skid; but if Buffalo squeaks out a win I’ll cheer for them. To start.

I entered to win tickets to the Washington/Atlanta game Sunday but didn’t. I’m a little upset.

Trendy Euro is backing up Miller because poor Lala has some sort of hip ailment. Frostee’s Mom is very excited.

While I’m definitely (and inexplicably) attached to Trendy Euro, I find myself not feeling the same way about Harvard. I’m sorry. He just seems to be like a lot of the other Sabres: completely ineffectual. I know he’s been taking faceoffs and killing penalties and bringing grit to the lineup, but I’m kind of sick of seeing that. My apologies, Mr. Harvard, but in my humble opinion you don’t seem to be worth $3 million.

I just broke the news to my friend that Petey is a UFA this summer. It did not go over too well. I love Petey, but if the Sabres sign him before they sign Caveman we are going to have some serious problems.

The Panthers began the night in 7th place in the Eastern Conference, and in attempt to keep up with the rest of the teams in the playoff race, were upended by the Buffalo Sabres 3-1 tonight at the HSBC Center in Buffalo.

It was probably a good idea that this game was not televised locally as the Panthers, shorthanded once again without Nathan Horton and Brian McCabe did little to help their chances in a race where spots 5-10 are only separated by 5 points. Tomas Vokun faced roughly 30 less shot tonight than he did Tuesday night when the Penguins sent 50 at him, however the Panthers improved defense for their goaltender still could not keep the Sabres at bay.

The Sabres Jaroslav Spacek opened up the scoring with his 8th goal of the year at 3:04 of the first period with a wrist shot to beat Vokun.

The Panthers quickly bounced back six minutes later when little known player Michal Repik tied the game at 1 with his second of the year, helped by an assist from David Booth.

Daniel Paille then sent a shot past Vokun in what would prove to be the game winner at 17:05 to close the first period scoring.

The only other goal of the game came from Buffalo’s top scorer Thomas Vanek with his 34th on the powerplay at 17:08 of the third period to close the door on Florida.

A key point in the 3rd was Buffalo’s killing of a 2-man advantage the Panthers had for over a minute. The Panthers only managed one shot on goal in this time.

This game marked the first return of Panthers forward Richard Zednick to Buffalo since his neck injury last year when then fellow Panther Olli Jokinen’s skate slashed Zednick and severed his carotid artery.

The loss paired with the Pens picking up 1 point in their OT loss and the Rangers win against Nashville put the Panthers in 9th and on the outside looking in. The Panthers however do have a game-in-hand on 8th place Carolina. The Panthers return home to Sunrise on Saturday to face In-state rival Tampa Bay.

If the Panthers dont pick it up…AND FAST…they will be giving away a lot of free tickets as the latest advertising promotion promises.

Thank you to Kramerica (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) for this post.

Wow. Just got back from one of the most emotional and incredible hockey games I have ever seen.

On the one-year anniversary of Richard Zednik’s life-threatening skate-to-the-neck freak injury, our Slovak Supremo scored a game-tying goal to cap a thrilling comeback from 4-1 down in the third period against the Toronto Maple Leafs here at home.

Then he buried the winner in overtime.

What a tribute to the human body and its ability to regenerate. What a tribute to the human spirit. What a thrilling night to be a Florida Panthers fan.

It’s a beautiful thing.

This is easily one of the best goals of the year. Something I’ve never seen on the ice. Guys have jumped on skates but I doubt anyone has jumped clear over a guy with control of the puck then been able to finish the play by scoring a goal. Sickkkkkk. And of course, the play occurs against the poor old Islanders. Though don’t fret Islander fans, your team has won 4 of 5. More on that later

Written by tatiana at Zimbio

There’s no denying that sports are physical and injuries are common and inevitable. There are some injuries that are so unbearable, so gruesome, so shocking that you have to tear your eyes from the screen.

These injuries look so horrible you can almost feel the pain in your body and you know that if looking at an athlete in that much pain hurts you, the pain for them must be excruciating.

Still, there’s something about these injuries that intrigues us and makes these athletes, who often times recover and come back for more, seem untouchable.

This list encompasses some of the most shocking injuries in sports. Some of these were nearly fatal, where others were just down right gross, but all of these are so horrible they almost can’t be watched.

WARNING: The videos that follow are gruesome, sickening and shocking. They may not be suitable for everyone and aren’t recommended for those that are grossed out easily, sickened by blood or have trouble watching limbs turn in ways they shouldn’t.

10. Tennis Star Mary Pierce Tears Her ACL
Although she missed all of the 2007 season, she has been rehabilitating her knee. She was scheduled to appear in the 2008 Olympics, but because of injury had to pull out.

Although he underwent surgery and extensive rehabilitation, Prothro was unable to continue his football career. He was alert and on the way to the hospital he was stable and talking. He lost five units of blood, but doctors said his live was not in jeopardy. He underwent surgery to repair the artery, which had not been severed. He fully recovered and has returned to Florida for the 2008-2009 season.

Officials originally wanted to disqualify him, but Holyfield and his doctor wanted to continue the fight. The fight continued and Tyson big off the top of Holyfield’s ear, known as the helix. Tyson was then disqualified. Holyfield recovered and continued to box. Tyson’s career spiraled and soon came to an end.

3. Olympic Weightlifter Janos Baranyai Dislocates Elbow
Baranyai was attempting to lift 148 kg in the men’s 77kg snatch at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. After he dislocated his elbow, he was taken off stage and treated. He planed to undergo rehabilitation and hopefully return to the world of weightlifting.

2. Villanova Basketball Player Allan Ray Has Eye Poked Out
Ray’s eye was surprisingly OK. Although he lost his vision for a short period of time, and his eyeball actually came loose from its socket, the injury turned out to be only minor soft tissue damage. His vision returned and he returned to the court less than a week later. In 2006 he was signed as a free agent with the Boston Celtics and in 2007 he pursued a contract with a professional team in Italy.

1. Buffalo Sabres Goalie Clint Malarchuk Has Jugular Sliced by Skate
Although Malarchuk’s injury looks similar to Panther’s player Richard Zednik, Malarchuk’s was actually far worse. His jugular vein or carotid artery was actually severed, which caused the mass amount of blood loss. Malarchuk said later he was sure he was going to die, he even asked for a priest. The team’s athletic trainer can be credited with saving the goalie, he reached into Malarchuk’s neck and pinched off the bleeding, he didn’t let go until doctors arrived to begin suturing the wound. He received over 330 stitches to close the wound and returned to practice four days later. A week later he was back in net to defend against the Quebec Nordiques. He retired, and now is a goalie coach for the Buffalo Sabres.
