One of the things I like most about Jon Bon Jovi is that he always gives a shout-out to his home state – the Garden State.

Heck, he even named one of his albums after Jersey.

And the love just keeps on coming. In the opening minutes of his recent appearance on “Inside the Actors Studio” (along with band mates David Bryan, Tico Torres and Richie Sambora), he gave us props once again.

“Where were you born?” asked host James Lipton.

“In the great state of New Jersey,” Jon proudly replied. “Perth Amboy, New Jersey.”

“And here’s a little-known fact,” he continued. “Richie, David and I were all born in the same hospital – delivered by the same baby doctor.”

I believe he’s referring to Raritan Bay Medical Center. Wonder if Dr. Greenberg is still practicing or if he’s retired?

On a side note, I’ve known Bon Jovi (not personally, of course) for most of my life. But what else would you expect of someone who was a teenager in the ’80s in New Jersey?

My association with the band goes a little farther, though: I was present for the filming of the band’s “7800° Fahrenheit” single “Only Lonely” in 1985 at a club called Modern Times in Jon’s hometown of Sayreville. (The club is now very well-known as Starland Ballroom.) If you squint really hard while watching the video, you might see me. Or not. Hey, I was only 15 and 5′7″!

I don’t remember much else, except there was a lot of standing around in a large crowd of people. Not surprisingly I didn’t get anywhere near Jon or any of the other band members. But I was there.

In the meantime, if you get the opportunity definitely check out David’s “The Toxic Avenger Musical.” I saw it last year at New Brunswick’s George Street Playhouse and it was a lot of fun. It’s got a lot of Jersey jokes in it, so you’ll enjoy it that much more if you’re a Garden Stater.

And Richie was just in his hometown of Woodbridge this week, where a street leading into the high school was named in his honor. You can read my former Home News Tribune colleague Chris Jordan’s story about Richie’s time in Middlesex County right here, and there’s a whole online gallery of photos here.

Who says you can’t go home?

Además viene otras grandes canciones clásicas del repertorio “cooperiano” de los siguientes años, como Bed Of Nails, Only My Heart Talkin’ y House Of Fire.

Carpe diem.

My hair has been the bane of my existence for as long as I can remember. I’ve colored it, curled i

My hair has been the bane of my existence for as long as I can remember. I’ve colored it, curled it, crimped it, moussed it and still it has the same straggly fine quality as Richie Sambora’s with Heather Locklear’s infamous roots. Stunning, really.

My mom had super thin hair that she enhanced by teasing it and wearing hair pieces. At night she would pin the hair pieces to styrofoam heads in our bathroom and set them in rollers. If you had to pee in the middle of the night, it was always scary to flip on the lights and see those heads. She used to joke that she married my dad who has thick, wavy hair so that her daughter would have better hair than she did. And I do, but that’s not saying much.

The thing is, it’s not just me, no one likes their own hair.

Just last month, Chris Rock put out that documentary, Good Hair, about all the painful, awful things African American women do to their hair. He said he made the film because his daughter asked him “why don’t I have good hair?” and he was appalled that a child would feel that way.

I have a friend who is of Korean decent with really silky smooth hair and she recently got a perm. She looks totally cute with the perm (it’s more like a body wave, kind of like the sexy waves that Lauren the med student/hooker on the new Melrose flaunts – not a big 80s perm) but her husband hates it because perms make your hair sort of “crunchy” and he’s used to her soft, shiny natural hair. Why mess with hair that already looked great? Because we all want what we don’t have.

She spends all day in the hospital and all night as a hooker and her hair still looks like this?

Mac’s little friend, Kate, has the most gorgeous head of blonde curls you’ve ever seen in your life. She’s like a little angel. And all the boys love her. I mean for real love her. According to his mom, who is a trusted source, one of Mac’s little buddies spent his time on the toilet today, talking about how one day he and his true love Kate will get married and have a son named Ben. What kind of four year old boy thinks about that while taking a crap? And what kind of startling four year old beauty inspires such a thing? Obviously, her curls are something special. But at 4, she has already mentioned to her mom that she wishes she had straight hair. Kate – we all want your hair! And it’s sure to drive Mac and his bud to Brandon and Dylan like frenemy status at some point. Embrace it!

There’s an episode in the ninth or tenth season of Beverly Hills 90210, when Donna’s vixen cousin, Gina Kincaid, is toying with David Silver and Donna asks him “what is it about her? It’s the hair, right?” I loved that because I spent entire episodes staring at Vanessa Marcil and wondering how I could make my hair look like hers.

She's lucky her great hair is such a distraction from her hideous face and body.

The funny part about my mom and her obsession with hair goes back to how she thought she’d get me good hair by marrying a man with great hair. There is no question that my dad still has an impressive head of hair. I wish I’d gotten that instead of the eczema and the bad temper, but genetics is a lottery and you don’t always win. However, while his hair is great, he’s known for it because he used to have what we called “wings” on the side. White patches in the shapes of triangles above each ear. People I didn’t know would see my dad out and be like “Molly, I saw Wings last night”. The wings were infamous. And totally awesome.

No, that's not my dad, but you get the point.

A few years back a girlfriend convinced him to lose the wings and he started coloring over them. Everyone who knew him during the wings era misses them. Letting a woman tell you what to do with your hair is a big mistake. Just ask Samson.

Earlier this week I complained about my hair in front of Mac and he gave me the biggest compliment a four year old boy can give by saying that I have “long princess hair”. The rest of the day I felt so pretty. Then I remembered that when I was a small child I thought Julie Hagerty in the Airplane! movies had the most beautiful hair in the world. And I quickly made an appointment to get mine cut.

Me and Robert Hays loved us some Hagerty Hair

¿Entonces? ¿Cómo suena The Circle? Y The Circle no me hace cambiar de parecer.

1. We Weren’t Born to Follow: primer tema y single, es el modelo ideal.

4. Superman Tonight
5. Bullet
6. Thorn in My Side
7. Live Before You Die
8. Brokenpromiseland
9. Love’s the Only Rule
10. Fast Cars
11. Happy Now
12. Learn to Love

Jon Bon Jovi – Lead Vocals
Richie Sambora – Guitar, Backing Vocals
Tico Torres – Drums, Percussion
David Bryan – Keyboards, Piano

Additional Musicians:
Hugh McDonald – Bass
Charlie Judge – Keyboards

Producer: John Shanks with Jon Bon Jovi & Richie Sambora

It’s hard to believe after only releasing two albums in the 1990s that Bon Jovi is now on their fifth studio release in the 2000s alone (The Circle is actually their sixth studio release if you want to count their acoustic reworkings of their own songs on This Left Feels Right). And I haven’t even mentioned the live album and box set they released this decade! So yes, the band has been extremely active this decade with a steady stream of albums and world tours that sell out wherever they go.

The downside to all of this? Their music overall hasn’t been up to snuff with their ’80s or even ’90s output. Their “comeback” album Crush was great, different but great. Bounce rocked harder and was really good. After that, the band has turned into a bland rock band that doesn’t really rock at all and they’ve dabbled way too much in country rock in an attempt to stay relevant (but it worked for a bit, so what do I know?).

In hype for this album, Jon and Richie promised they were done with Nashville and that the album’s title was a reference to the band coming full circle and getting back to rock ‘n’ roll and that they were giving us a “big rock record”. Well, I can tell you this much — thankfully, most signs of Lost Highway are gone (perhaps lost?). I wouldn’t say this album is “big rock” at all, but it is a better effort than Have a Nice Day even if it still sounds similar to that release. I had been hoping this would be closer to Bounce (“Bullet” comes close), but no dice.

I realize that the band is laughing all the way to the bank with the steady stream of bland, safe rock ‘n’ roll made for their soccer mom fans, but I really wish these guys would pay attention to the minority of fans that want a harder edge and huge sing-along choruses. I don’t expect a sequel to Slippery When Wet or New Jersey (though the band does offer up the bass line from “Livin’ On A Prayer” for “Work for the Working Man”), I don’t want a nostalgia release, but throw me a few bones! Give me a couple of songs that have that feel good over the top vibe that band had up until Keep the Faith.

Noticeably absent is the classic Bon Jovi sounding ballad that doesn’t care what decade it is. Even on the awful Lost Highway the band managed to squeeze out the under appreciated “(You Want to) Make a Memory”. Desmond Child co-wrote that song and he helps out a bit on this album, but even his involvement can’t save this album.

Ultimately, The Circle is another collection of mediocre, thoughtful and mature rock songs (Just like U2!) that don’t please this old school Bon Jovi fan and I can’t imagine reaching for this album in the future.

The CD/DVD limited edition comes with the 75 minute B&W documentary When We Were Beautiful, which follows the band on their Lost Highway tour from 2007. It’s a pretty interesting look into the workings of the band.

Highlights: “We Weren’t Born to Follow”, “Work for the Working Man”, “Bullet”, “Brokenpromiseland”, “Happy Now”

This morning, to my surprise and delight, I had a close encounter of the celebrity kind. On my way to the bathroom, I noticed a crowd of people congregating in the newsroom but thought nothing of it. Must be another kid in a balloon or something.

Not paying attention to where I was walking, obviously, I do not think to look up from the ground, concentrating ever so intensely on keeping myself balanced in my 4-inch heels. It is only when I bumped into something, or should I say, someone, that my glance turned upward. I had quite literally bumped into Jon Bon Jovi.

Trying to regain my composure, I tried to say something witty, but all that came up was a jumbled ’sorry” as I bolted for the bathroom. Did that really just happen? Did I really humiliate myself in front of the 47 year old super star?

Seeing David Ushery later on, I asked “Why was Bon Jovi here?!?”

“Oh I just interviewed him and Richie Sambora on a story. Sorry I didn’t think to tell you that they were coming… I thought that they were to old for someone as hip and happening as you.”

Hip and happening. Yeah right.

“Besides,” he laughed, “I thought the Jonas Brothers would be much more your speed”

“Actually David, us hipsters refer to them as the Jo-Bros. Gotta keep up.”

Just another day. Assaulting a celebrity, and made fun of by yet another guy in the newsroom.

it’s not often that i eagerly await “New Music Tuesday”…. however on this particular day the newest Bon Jovi album “The Circle” dropped. OMG fucking awesome. and i’m not saying that as a fan since I was about 6…. yes, that would make me a fan of Bon Jovi for almost 24 years, and yes it is possible to know good music at age 6. I have vivid memories of my pocket rocker (do you remember those?) being at recess rocking to “Wanted” and “Livin’ on a Prayer”…. I was in first grade… okay, stop laughing.

seriously though, this album is fantastic. The first single “We Weren’t Born to Follow” has had me rockin in the car for weeks, and it’s very stadium-anthemish which will be kick ass when they open the new Meadowlands Stadium in May. I’m also a huge fan of “Superman”….

May cannot come fast enough….

Actualizacion 6 noviembre

Work For The Working Man.

We Weren´t Born To Follow. When We Were Beautiful es el segundo tema del disco.

Work For The Working Man. ¡Genial! Este tema me recuerda a algunos del álbum Have a Nice Day.

Live Before You Die, precioso, un medio-tiempo entrañable, tierno.

Work For The Working Man: Learn To Love.

November in London.

“A major turning point came when she was selected from over one hundred guitarists to play in Michael Jackson’s highly skilled band which toured the world for one and a half years playing for over four and a half million people. Jennifer wasted no time after the” Bad” Tour’s grand finale, diving into work on her own album with renown producer (and Stevie Wonder guitarist) Michael Sembello…”

“…she was asked again to join Michael Jackson for his upcoming “Dangerous Tour“. In January ‘93, she joined Jackson to partake in Superbowl XXVII’s half time entertainment which aired to one-and-one-half-billion people in 80 nations. It was the largest audience in television history.”

“She completed her second solo record “Jennifer Batten’s Tribal Rage~Momentum,” just before she was again asked to join Michael Jackson for his 2 year world tour supporting his double album “HIStory” in 1997.”

“In the spring of ‘98 Jeff Beck asked Jennifer to join his band. They joined forces for 3 years on the CD’s “Who Else“, and “You Had It Coming” which were both supported by world tours.”

Here it is, our first photo download! And what a download it is, a shot of Bon Jovi’s Richie Sambora and The Homeshoppingista. The man in the middle in the background is drummer Tico Torres.

OK, we know it’s just the back of our head, but that’s the best sister Karen could do at the party after Showtime’s screening of “Bon Jovi: When We Were Beautiful.” It airs Saturday.

Richie, a fellow Jersey person, looks fascinated by our question, doesn’t he? Heather Locklear and Denise Richards have nothing on us (sure).

To read his frank comments to us about the film, check out our story on NewJerseyNewsroom.com.

But here is one Sambora quote from that story, about the rock-star life.

“Everybody kind of looks at us like we’re exempt from human tragedy or whatever goes on in people’s lives,” Sambora told us. “That’s not true. We’re just regular guys. Because when we go home, we f–king take the garbage out just like everybody else.”

We have to run. We’re late for our volunteer work for the PR department of a big hospital chain, where we are writing about serious life-and-death issues.

Lisa, we have the “When We Were Beautiful” DVD for you. We’re on our way.

We don’t want to keep you hanging. We filed our story on the screening of “Bon Jovi: When We Were Beautiful,” which we attended Wednesday night. Showtime will air the documentary Saturday.

At the after-party in Tribeca, we snagged a few quotes from our Jersey boys, band leader Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora. We have to shout out the cliche that everyone says when they see a star in person: The band members were shorter than we expected, and Richie was very thin. But they looked good, and Richie was great.

The first story on NewJerseyNewsroom.com includes the chats with the band members and an interview with the director, Phil Griffin.

We also did a second story focusing on the film itself, which is a behind-the-scenes look at Bon Jovi’s 2008 Lost Highway World Tour.

We’re still waiting for a download of our photo with Richie.
