Thanksgiving Day

Seems like only a year ago that we saw a special appearance by Rick Astley at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Wait,… that was a year ago.

This year, bananaketchup and I spent time with our family, feasting on Cornish game hen, chowing down on some ham, sweet potatoes, mac n’ cheese topped with prosciutto (courtesy of our sister), mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie, watching football and drinking beer. I think that says it all, so I’m not going to go on some long spiel about what Thanksgiving means to me. But, I would like to share some pictures from our special day here and say thanks to everyone who stops by to check out Late Nite Adobo.

With my dad at the helm, delicious options such as this glazed ham made it onto the dinner table.

And of course something to wash it all down.

That’s all fine and dandy but what I really want to know is… how did you spend your Thanksgiving? I hope you all had a great one!

When it comes to music, we all have those tried-and-true songs we love to listen to as we get ready to go out for the night, or the ones we squeal giddily to when a DJ spins them on. But one of the great things about recent technology is that almost anyone can become a DJ–and a pretty decent one, at that–by being able to create song mash-ups. Now while this post isn’t directly about the Internet, I definitely think song mash-ups are a crazy phenomenon that certainly only spread through viral videos and the Internet, otherwise you would only hear such mixing if you went to see a professional DJ at a bar or club.

I mean, look at Girl Talk. He had a nine-to-five job as an engineer but was able to quit his job in 2007 to become a professional DJ and tour around the world. And he also allowed fans to buy his 2008 album, Feed The Animals, online for any price they were willing to pay, a la Radiohead.

Girl Talk aside (Although you should DEFINITELY check him out if you haven’t heard of him, seriously) I am posting today some common mash-ups of Top 40 songs that we all know, so that you can recognize how badass the mash-up is in action. The first is a combo of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up.” I felt this one was important to include because “Rick Rolling” is also a viral video that took off a couple years back online, and so I thought this would pay homage to that.

Another mash-up I liked and thought was worth adding was Biggie Smalls’ “Party and Bullshit” and Miley Cyrus’ “Party In The U.S.A.” I like this mash-up becuase…well, of any two artists you could try to get to do a duo, Biggie and Miley would be the least likely. And not even just becuase Biggie is dead…it would just NEVER happen.

And last but not least I included a mash-up of Black Eyed Peas’ “Lady Lumps” and Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” just because this seems like a classic club mash-up that I could see being played at any bar in any college town, including ours. Enjoy!

If you have a jailbroken iPhone or have enabled SSH (which isnt enabled from factory) you could be in danger of receiving a virus. Although it doesn’t appear to be malicious the ‘Ikee’ virus replaces your background with a picture of Rick Astley. If you live on the internet and are up to date with your fads you will recognize this. If not, shame on you !

The best place to get rick rolled is Youtube. Home to a billion daily views, many videos are falsely advertised in their headlines and thumbnail image as related to the content it claims to hold. Once an unsuspecting visitor clicks on the video, he/she is stricken in utter fright as Rick Astley’s 1987 song “Never Gonna Let You Up” begins to play instead. No, this isn’t Youtube’s fault in anyway (ok, maybe a little) but just a legion of hilarious hooligans looking to surprise thousands of innocent people. After a myriad number of times being rick rolled, I have managed to quell my boisterous cursing and instead enjoy a nice, hearty chuckle as I read the long list of derisive comments left my angry viewers.

Ugh. Kanye.

He’s an idiot. We all know this. What he did to Taylor Swift at the VMA’s was ridiculous, inconsiderate, egotistical, mean, blah, blah, blah, and blah. Just ask Obama.

Thing is… I don’t care anymore! None of it is funny anymore. At least to me. Right after it happened, I laughed at the images on I’mma Let You Finish.com. Now, I just look at them and sigh, “Ugh, Kanye”.

This is the problem with memes that spread too fast. They get old. We don’t like being bombarded with the same story from all angles, especially when it’s something as meaningless as a childish act at the completely irrelevant MTV Video Music Awards. If you don’t understand what I’m saying and you just finished Rick Rolling someone, I suggest you watch this video about the Christian Bale rant from Rocketboom’s brilliant Know Your Meme series.

It’s the end of the week and I’m asking that this post marks the end of KanyeGate. Stop caring, immediately. May this be the last thing written about the incident. It’s clear the best take on the matter has already been written, anyway.

Well, he's got the halo, but I'm pretty sure the staff and lamb are just metaphoric...

You hear it all the time these days. People “finding Jesus.” Whether they’re in prison or rehab, they always talk about it as though they just won the inter-denominational scavenger hunt.

Internet Memes In Scribblenauts!?

so the much anticipated Nintendo DS game Scribblenauts has finally released. this game has won numerous awards pertaining to best game of E3 etc. if you don’t know what Scribblenauts is, it’s a game where you solve platform based puzzles by writing literally ANYTHING you can think of. you can read more about the game in an old post i wrote HERE.

the full game was leaked several days before it’s official release. the leet hax0rz have also released a full list of every possible word the game recognizes. there are over 22,000 words! CRAZY!

i personally feel that the most fun part of the game is trying to stump it. also seeing how different objects interact with each other. i also feel that the game should have some type of verses mode. so you can have a turn based war type game with friends. basically using anything you can think of to fight. would be SO fun haha.

the devs of the game seem to have snuck in some fun little internet memes into the list of dictionary words. one’s i’ve seen so far include:

Wer die Überschrift liest wird sich erstmal fragen, wie dieses Thema zu den Anderen passt, die wir hier so behandeln. Und ich kann das durchaus verstehen, die Parallele sieht man tatsächlich auf Anhieb nicht. Was hat ein Voting bei Victorias Secret mit Games zu tun? Die antwort hier ist die Offensichtliche: Nichts. Doch was hat das Voting mit dem Internet und der dortigen Kultur zu tun? Hier ist die antwort überraschender: sehr viel. Und das bezieht sich nicht nur darauf, dass dieses Voting im Netz stattfindet. Nein, es ist wesentlich interessanter.

Dieses Voting wird nämlich wieder einmal von einer uns bekannten Gruppe, die ich hier nicht nennen möchte, manipuliert. Hierfür muss ich zunächst weiter ausholen. Alles begann mit den MTV Music Awards diesen Jahres. Diese hat, wie sicherlich bekannt, Rick Astley mit seinem im Internet sehr bekannten Lied “Never gonna give you up” aus dem Jahr 1987 gewonnen.

1987 war das Lied noch wesentlich unbekannter, es hat nur durch das im Internet sehr bekannt gewordene “Rick Rolling” an Bekanntheit gewonnen. Dies ist ein Spiel im Netz, mit dem schlicht und ergreifen leute auf die Schippe nimmt, doch darauf will ich hier nicht genauer eingehen. Jedenfalls, war bei diesem Voting auch schon eben jene Gruppe am Werke, dank der Rick Astley im endeffekt mit 96% aller stimmen gewann, sehr beeindruckend wie ich finde.

Darauf folgten einige weitere kleinere Votings die auf gleiche Weise manipuliert wurden. Beispielsweise das Voting der “Times” diesesn Jahres in dem die bekannteste Person gewählt werden sollte. Hier gewann jedoch nicht Rick Astley – Nein, eine wesentlich unbekanntere person gewann hier. Doch wer, werdet ihr euch fragen, war das und warum wurde er von der Gruppierung ausgewählt? Sicherlich nicht, weil er ein bekannter Musiker ist. Viel mehr, weil er der Admin der Seite 4chan ist. Spätestens jetzt solltet ihr auch wissen, dass ich von Moot rede. Jeder der mit dem Begriff “Moot” etwas anfangen kann, weiß auch, das nur wenig über ihn bekannt ist, selbst sein Name ist ein Geheimnis, wobei man hier auf “Chris Poole” spekuliert. Dies wurde von ihm jedoch nie bestätigt. Hier findet ihr übrigens die Quelle. Die Anfangsbuchstaben der Namen der Gewinner ergeben übrigens von oben nach unten “Marblecake also the game”. Damit habt ihr jetzt auch alle offiziell das Spiel verloren.

Aber was hat das jetzt alles mit einer Unterwäschemarke zu tun? Ganz einfach! In besagtem Voting soll die schönste Person gewählt werden und Moot wurde kurze Hand zur Wahl gestellt, vermutlich ohne dass er das selbst weiß. Ich behaupte einfach mal, dass die hier gemachten Angaben nicht von ihm sind, sondern von besagter Gruppierung.

Warum berichte ich jetzt darüber? Zum ersten, weil die Gruppierung recht bekannt ist und ihren ursprung im Netz hat und daher auch die Aufmerksamkeit eines so winzigen Blogs verdient. Zum zweiten, weil dies der aktuellste “social Hack” einer Reihe ist und noch im Gange ist. Wir also gerade vermutlich die ersten sind die darüber berichten, das wollte ich mir natürlich nicht nehmen lassen. Ob Moot die Wahl gewinnen wird, ist natürlich noch unklar, aber man kann eigentlich damit rechnen.

Wie funktionieren nun diese “social Hacks” bzw. was sind sie? Ganz einfach bei einem von einer seite offiziell angesetzten Votings wird einfach von einer Gruppe, der viele Ressourcen zur Verfügung stehen, eine Person vorgeschlagen und danach voten alle Mitglieder dieser Gruppe nur für diese Person, wenn möglich wiederholt, um zu gewährleisten, dass sie gewinnt und gleichzeitig dadurch das Wahlergebnis zu verfälschen. Warum macht man sowas? Ähm, ja…

Ich bin auf jeden Fall gespannt, ob Moots kleine Armee sich durchsetzen und ihn zum Sieg bringen wird. Nach Ende der Wahl werde ich hier das Ergebnis noch einmal posten. Bis dahin wünsche ich noch eine schöne Zeit!

P.S. Die Aktion wurde erst Heute (23. August 2009) gestartet, daher behaupte ich, dass wir die ersten waren, die darüber berichten.

Update vom 24. August 2009, 12:47 Uhr: Moot ist mitlerweile auf Platz 1 mit 74303 Stimmen. Mitlerweile ist jedoch eine ernstzunehmende Konkurrentin dem Wettkampf beigetreten, sie ist z.Z. auf Platz 5 mit 2606 Stimmen und hört auf den Namen Boxxy. Ihre Teilnahme hat vermutlich den gleichen Hintergrund wie die Teilnahme von Moot.

Update vom 24. Augist 2009, 18:52 Uhr: Moots Profil wurde entfernt. Die Gruppierung beratschlagt gerade, wie sie dagegen vorgehen kann. Zur Auswahl stehen z.Z. die seite jez entweder mit einem DDoS Angriff abschießen, mehr fake profile erstellen, ALLEN Profilen so viele Votes in kürzester Zeit geben, dass die auch gebannt werden, Boxxy gewinnen lassen oder die hässlichste person auf der seite gewinnen lassen… Es bleibt spannend.

In the Article above I tried to inform the German people on the Internet about the latest “social hacks” of our beloved Community group, which I won’t call by its name, but I think you all know, who I’m talking about.

So it all started with the biggest Rick Roll in the History of our beloved Internet. Of course I’m talking about the MTV Music Awards. At that time, the above mentioned group decided it would be in their interest that Rick Astley, a musician out of the 80s, wins the Award. So they mobilized all their resources, and they’ve got much of that, to vote for him. I supported that, because I liked the idea and voted for him myself, nearly over 9000 times. And so he won the Award with about 96% of all Votes for him. It was indeed impressing, even I didn’t even hoped, that he would win so clearly, but he did. I think the Group realized at that moment, that they’re powerful and they tried that again.

They successfully manipulated a Voting of the “Times” in a similar way. The Voting was about the most popular Person on the web, and the mentioned Group decided to bring in Moot. Moot is a really popular on the web, because he is the admin of 4chan and that makes him to a celebrity. So the choice to bring him in was justified. And, of course, he won. By the time it got clear that the group would win again, they decided to make the Game (you just lost it btw) more interesting by forming some words with the first letters of the names of the Winner. These words were “Marblecake also The Game”. But why am I talking about that, when the Headline talks about Victorias Secret?

The latest move of that Group involves a Voting on the Homepage of Victorias Secret. At the Moment a Voting is on that Site, to indentify the most beautiful Person. And of course, Moot deserves that title, too. So they brought him in again. At the moment he is actually winning again, as you can check here: Link. This time, the group brought also another Person in. It’s a little girl, which is called “Boxxy”, you can find her gallery here. So they are trying to do the same thing again. I’m really curios, if they will manage to make him win again.

Update: It seems to be that you cannot vote for Moot anymore? I will check this…

Update²: Yepp, they removed him, that particular group is really pissed about that at the moment and thinks about their options to get revenge or threaten the admins. At this moment they confer, if they should DDoS Victorias Secret or make more fake Profiles of Moot or CP. It seems Victorias Secret was in the opinion, that the Voting has not been legit, since Moot has had over thousand of votes more than a cancer Patient. I am really curious about that now…

Update³: Their Decision seems to be to vote for the remaining Boxxy Profile.
