Mamihlapinatapai (spreek uit mamilapinatapai) is een woord uit een bijna uitgestorven taal, het Yaghan, dat nog door een paar natievelingen op Vuurland wordt gesproken. Volgens wikipedia is het een van de moeilijkste woorden om te vertalen: ‘de blik die wordt uitgewisseld door twee mensen die geen initiatief willen of durven nemen om iets aan te bieden, maar wel hopen dat de ander dat doet.’ Wat een subtiliteit. Ik probeer de omstandigheden en gemoedstoestand in mezelf te zoeken, iets voor te stellen dat het benadert, het lukt me zo gauw niet. En al zou ik me er iets bij kunnen voorstellen en ik zou die blik willen uitwisselen, dan moet ik nog wel iemand vinden die het ook voelt. It takes two to tango.

Eén woord om zo’n complexe situatie te schetsen. Eén woord voor het gevoel en de omstandigheden waarin je het voelt. Eén woord en die mensen begrijpen elkaar, houden elkaar vast in een prachtige dubbel omgekeerde sociale houdgreep. Ik stel me voor dat, zodra ze de blik hebben gewisseld, ze elkaar gierend van de lach op de schouders slaan, de spanning gebroken, om even later weer vast te zitten… of misschien elkaar innig zoenen? Dat ze daar een woord voor hebben zegt iets over de betekenis van het sociale in die cultuur. Wat heeft die bijna uitgestorven cultuur wel wat wij niet hebben? 

Gisteren zat ik in Den Haag in een vergadering. We bespraken de inzet van een externe kracht voor een lastig klusje. Ik had een voorkeur voor de jonge talentvolle creatieveling van het kleine onbekende bureau. De beslissing lag niet bij mij, maar bij iemand die er niet was, de algemeen directeur. Hij had aan mijn baas laten doorschemeren weinig vertrouwen te hebben in de inhuur van eenlingen voor klusjes, maar liefst het hele programma uit te besteden aan een gerenommeerd bureau, inclusief coördinatie en resultaat verantwoordelijkheid. Ik dacht aan de afgelopen anderhalf jaar, de ideeën die we ontwikkeld hadden, van alle kanten hadden belicht. Hoe we andere afdelingen erbij betrokken hadden, enthousiasme hadden opgewekt. Ik dacht aan de hulp die we vroegen, maar niet kregen. Ik dacht aan de talloze vertragingen doordat we telkens weer moesten verantwoorden wat we gingen doen aan mensen die de context niet kenden. De kosten berekeningen voor activiteiten die we niet konden voorspellen. Het betrekken van mensen die nog honderd andere dingen te doen hadden. De teleurgestelde gezichten van mijn collega’s.

En tegelijkertijd begreep ik het en begreep ik de positie waarin mijn baas zich bevond en zijn baas … en zijn baas. In een cultuur waarin je van jezelf uitgaat, waarin jij de uitdaging aangegaan bent, je alleen kunt vertrouwen op wat je zelf kan beoordelen en beheersen, je alleen verantwoordelijk bent voor wat je zelf hebt toegezegd. Een cultuur waarin je elkaars context niet meer deelt, onafhankelijk van elkaar bent, in zo’n cultuur moet je rationeel kunnen verantwoorden waarom je voor A bent gegaan en niet B. In zo’n cultuur worden contextgebonden argumenten niet begrepen, is de vanzelfsprekende betekenis van de omstandigheden die je met elkaar deelt verdwenen. In zo’n cultuur houden we elkaar in een houdgreep van verantwoording. In zo’n cultuur worden organisaties zwarte gaten met hun eigen realiteit, waaruit betekenis niet meer kan ontsnappen, hoe meer managementlagen hoe sterker. Er zou een woord moeten zijn voor een cultuur waarin de mamihlapinatapai-blik niet meer gewisseld kan worden.

Ricky’s a HUGE ninja enthusiast.  Although technically the date tomorrow is November 26th, for him it is absolutely Christmas.  I’ve been hearing about this Ninja Assassin movie for months and we’re going to the 10am showing tomorrow (Thanksgiving morning).

Nothing represents giving thanks more than a ninja movie!

Rick is incredibly camp. Something I tried to ignore when we dated. He has been on tour with Michael McIntyre for the past few months, getting porky and doing some porking. Here he is, mincing about backstage. According to Rick, this video has been so popular he now has his own groupies who hang out at the stage door waiting for him. Er… right. Though, going through the comments it seems he might be telling the truth. Weird.

Na madrugada de hoje eu terminei de ler o 3º livro da série Percy Jackson & Os Olimpianos, A Maldição do Titã, de Rick Riordan.

Na sequencia de O Mar de Monstros, Percy, Annabeth e agora Thalia, filha de Zeus, vão à um novo internato, onde Grover encontrou dois novos meios-sangues, mas não sabe quem é o pai ou mãe olimpiano deles.

Neste internato eles encontram o Espinheiro, que na verdade é um manticore, que faz de tudo para detê-los.

Em seguida, Percy, Annabeth, Grover, Thalia e os dois novos meios-sangue, Bianca e Nico di Angelo, se deparam com a deusa Ártemis e suas caçadoras. Uma luta acontece entre semi-deuses, caçadores e o manticore, o que resulta no desaparcimento de Annabeth junto com o monstro.

No decorrer da história, os heróis descobrem que tudo fazia parte do plano de Luke e os servos de Cronos, que se aliaram à Atlas, o titã que segura o céu, para mais uma vez tentar derrubar o Olimpo, enfraquecendo Annabeth e Ártemis, que são obrigadas a aguentar o peso do céu.

E a revelação do pai olimpiano d Bianca e Nico preocupa os heróis.

Bem, talvez este meu resumo tenha ficado meio confuso, mas a história é excelente, como os outros livros da série que trouxe os deuses gregos para os dias de hoje.

Notice of Overbidding Guidelines for FHA Financing

FHA guidelines will limit the underwriter to insuring the loan for the lower of two values; the offer price or the appraised value (displayed as the As-Is Value). If your offer price is higher than the appraised value, the FHA underwriter will require that your buyer(s) cover the overbid amount with a cash deposit. The buyer(s) will not be allowed to build the overbid amount into an FHA loan.

HUD’s mortgagee letter 2000-27 will require that the FHA UW use the appraisal obtained by PEMCO. This mortgagee letter instructs the FHA UW NOT to obtain a new appraisal; nor can the FHA UW request that new comps be pulled and the PEMCO appraisal updated.

If your offer price is higher than the appraised value and tentative acceptance is extended to you, the options available to you are:

1.       Proceed with contract execution. PEMCO will require that the selling broker verify that the cash reserves are available to cover the overbid amount before we execute the contract.

2.       Use cash or conventional financing. All of the guidelines outlined above apply to FHA financing only. A conventional lender will have their own set of guidelines not governed by HUD.

3.       Cancel prior to contract execution. If there is an acceptable backup, we will award tentative acceptance to the backup offer. If there are no acceptable backup offers, the property will be relisted.

Vanmorgen stap ik in de auto en rij de straat uit. Voor ik de wat grotere provinciale weg op ga moet ik een fietspad over. Van links komt een jonge vrouw aanfietsen. Ik geef haar voorrang en draai de weg op. Onze levens kruisten elkaar, een kwestie van seconden. Als ik iets langer mijn tanden had gepoetst of niet voor niks naar een laatje was gelopen voor mijn sleutels terwijl ze in mijn jaszak zaten, hadden onze paden elkaar niet gekruist. Als ik ook maar even een andere gedachte had gehad, niet tegen dat steentje had geschopt. Als ik de dag daarvoor eerder of later naar bed was gegaan of iets anders had gegeten, was het anders gelopen. Hetzelfde geldt voor haar. Iedere handeling, iedere gedachte, iedere waarneming of gedachte van vandaag of gisteren of de dag daarvoor of daarvoor, alles telt mee. Wat er die morgen in de krant stond, wat onze ouders gedaan hebben, onze familie en vrienden, de troonrede, Napoleon, een Neanderthaler genaamd Flok, de dinosauriërs, die arme Marco Borsato en (die arme?) Unico Glorie, de oerknal en mijn verstopte oor, alles, alles heeft bijgedragen aan onze bijna botsing, juist op dat moment, op die plek.

Door een dergelijk moment zo te benadrukken wint het aan betekenis. Het krijgt iets geregisseerds, zoals in films een dramatische serie van flashbacks van de gescheiden levens van de hoofdpersonen opbouwt naar het noodlottige ongeluk of de eerste romantische ontmoeting. Het is een omdraaiing van de werkelijkheid – een veel voorkomend euvel in de schimmige wereld van ‘intelligent’ design, een onderwerp dat ik met alle liefde een andere keer nog weleens wil vercolumniseren – maar het is vooral de keuze van het moment, het verschijnsel, dat zo’n dramatiserend effect heeft.    

Door iets uit de context te lichten, het op een podium te plaatsen, krijgt het meer betekenis, maar vooral een andere betekenis. Een paar voorbeelden uit het nieuws van deze week: minister ter Horst wil de agressie in uitgaansgebieden tegengaan door voetgangers te onderwerpen aan een blaastest. Hiervoor moet de wet veranderd worden, omdat je aan een wandelaar niet kan zien of hij dronken is. Op zich een discussie waard hoeveel je zelf gedronken moet hebben om dat niet te kunnen zien, maar mijn vraag is: hoeveel betekenis negeert Guusje hier en welke betekenis honoreert ze juist? Of hoeveel betekenis negeert Hirsch Ballin als hij na het ontsnappen van Saban B. de beslissing over verlofverzoeken bij de gevangenisdirecteuren legt? Of de G20 als ze zich de vraag stellen wanneer de overheden moeten stoppen met het stimuleren van de economie, nu de recessie voorbij lijkt? Of Balkenende als hij stelt dat ‘het systeem’ is doorgeschoten en dat er dus grenzen aan de bonussen gesteld moeten worden. Of Marco Borsato als hij drie weken geleden … ah nee, da’s flauw.  

Ik begrijp goed dat je keuzes moet maken, dat je niet met alles rekening kan houden en dat je niet alle betekenis kan waarnemen. Maar kunnen we ongestraft zovéél blijven negeren? Kunnen we bestuurders blijven kiezen die zoveel van wat er toe doet negeren? Wat is daadkracht waard, wat is besluitvaardigheid waard of doorzettingsvermogen, als het gebaseerd is op een fractie van wat er toe doet? Hoe makkelijk is het om een beslissing te nemen als je de ballast van het herkennen en respecteren van betekenis, van wat er toe doet, afwerpt?

Wie de troonrede leest kan zien wat dit kabinet uit de context heeft gelicht en op een podium heeft geplaatst. De keuzes lijken vooral gebaseerd op hun potentieel dramaturgisch effect. Wie de algemene beschouwingen zelfs maar een beetje volgt kan zien dat ons parlement, een paar uitzonderingen daargelaten, niet in staat is om te zien wat er toe doet. Ze accepteren de keuzes en zien niet wat er ontbreekt: een wereld van betekenis.

Returned to Fallout by cleaning up some loose ends in Rivet City. I found Victoria Watts, android helper, who gave me her contact for facial reconstruction. His name is Pinkerton, and he lives in the fore of ship, accessible only by swimming; not sure why I would need to go to him, but good to know. Walked around the rest of the boat – didn’t find anything too interesting except a Hard locked filing cabinet.

Headed to Grayditch to tell Bryan Wilks the good news – he’s now headed to Rivet City to live with cousin Vera. Those! completed. Paid a visit to the hapless Dr. Lesko, who pays pretty decent money for fire ant nectar.

Lastly, I scooped up some NCQs from storage in Tenpenny Tower and dropped them off to the blonde Sierra in Girdershade; this broke the five NCQ barrier.

Next steps: Work on outstanding quest for the Declaration of Independence.

Alaric is Goth.  Not the dark eyeliner, Siouxie Sioux Goth.  Nope, we’re talking the havoc-making, Rome-sacking Visigoths.

Alaric I ruled the Visigoths early in the fifth century, establishing a new royal line and invading the Eternal City in 410.  He was a big deal back then, and you’ll find references to him in art and literature through the ages.

Alaric II came along a few decades later, in 485.  In between the two Alarics,  Gesalec, Sigarec, Wallia and Thorismund held the throne, among others.  Your average Visigoth monarch’s moniker would not wear terribly well circa 2009.

But Alaric is the exception.  He sounds like a three-syllable combo platter made up of Eric and Alan, but he’s actually from the Germanic elements ala - all and ric – ruler, or something like “king of all.”  It’s a fitting name for the founder of a dynasty.

Besides the Visigoths, there was a legendary king of Sweden called Alrek 0r Alrekr, and often Anglicized as Alaric.

While Alaric has never appeared in the US Top 1000, you’ll find Alaric in the census records.  The Latin form of the name – Alaricus – pops up in medieval records, too, suggesting that he’s been in occasional use for generations.

But most modern parents probably discover Alaric in the pages of a book.  If not history, then fiction:

• Katherine Kountz used Alaric for a character in her long-running Deryni fantasy series – he’s a duke, and a good egg;
• Stephen King used it for Roland’s grandfather in his Dark Towers series;
• One of Anthony Trollope’s Three Clerks was Alaric Tudor;
• PG Wodehouse, best known for his Jeeves & Wooster series, also wrote about the inhabitants of Blandings Castle.  The elderly, grouchy Duke of Dunstable is a frequent visitor – and wears the name Alaric.

The British Navy used Alaric for a submarine late in World War II, and at least one Alaric has served the US military with distinction – back during the Civil War, Union Army officer Alaric Chapin was awarded the medal of honor.

It’s difficult to decide if Alaric is over the top in 2009.  Gavin and Tristan are Top 100 picks.  Boys answer to Sebastian and Julian.  Romeo ranked #466 and Orlando #419.

Perhaps the best way to describe Alaric is from the title of one of my favorite user-created lists at Nameberry:  My Braver Alter-Ego Would Totally Use These.  The list groups Alaric with other gems like Horatio, Junia and Crispin – quirky and stylish, but just a bit less accessible than almost mainstream choices like Asher.

Alaric offers a few nicknames – Al, Rick and Aric are the obvious three.  If those don’t thrill you, proceed with caution.  While more and more parents use – and prefer that others use – their child’s full name, there’s no guarantee what will happen when your son hits middle school.  Or tuck Alaric in the middle spot, where he’d be a good substitute for Alexander.

Then again, what kid wouldn’t be delighted to learn that he was named after a barbarian king?

I saw his face today. I really thought I had blocked that out so good. However, it really made my stomach turn. I haven’t written, called or anything since he went into Hospital in 2003. That sure would appear to be someone who didn’t care. He doesn’t know that I had a newborn dropped in my lap at the same time, nor that I had brain surgery AGAIN myself shortly after. Then as more time goes by, I only feel that much worse about no contact. Besides all that, it was a conversation or situation that stood still. He wasn’t going anywhere and I wasn’t going anywhere, both with good reason. The truth is…I was overwhelmed with a new baby. Under normal circumstances, I wouldn’t have been. This was different, not only because of my health issues but because I had a situation that I had to go further to protect that baby. There was temporarily a real nutcase around that we had to get rid of. It was the idiot that carried the baby, aaah to know there’s a special place in hell for those. If only that kind were forced to be sterilized. That might seem harsh but thats not putting in here all that she/they have done. To some that might not seem like it could hold a person back from other important issues. It was due to the fact that the legal system had to be tip-toed around also. I not only feel very strongly about protecting children but this one was/is even mine; my grandbaby.  I had to and did protect that baby at all cost. So I might not march up the steps to the White House, but it made all the difference in the world to that ONE.

With all that I have on my plate, I was able to block it out…for the most part. He also doesn’t know I was able to keep updated on how he did.

I could continue to add to this post for a long time. What else can I say?

God always has a plan, while we are busy ‘thinking’ we are making our plans.

If I could, I would let him know that he’ll never be alone, no matter how much time goes by…
