Ihre erste Platte hatte Shirley Bassey schon im Jahr 1956 veröffentlicht und holte sich für das neue Album Unterstützung vom Produzenten David Arnold – ein alter Bekannter der Diva, da er unter anderem für die musikalische Untermalung zahlreicher James Bond-Filme zuständig war. Zeitlose Songs wie „Goldfinger“ haben Shirley Bassey zur Musiklegende gemacht und auch nach 50 Jahren im Musik-Business denkt sie noch lange nicht aufs Aufhören. Elf Tracks sind auf der neuen CD zu finden – Gary Barlow („Take That“), Ricky Wilson („Kaiser Chiefs“), David Tennant („Pet Shop Boys“), u.v.m. agierten als Songwriter und so weisen einige Songs enormes Hitpotenzial auf.

There are reports flying around in the last 24 hours saying that a fight broke out at a music festival in Barcelona, involving members of John Lydon’s entourage and Kele Okereke of Bloc Party.

It goes like this: At the Summercase Festival in Barcelona, Kele Okereke went over to spoke to his childhood idol, John Lydon, formerly Johnny Rotten. It was then that members of Lydon’s entourage are to have shouted racist abuse at Okereke, including something along the lines of: “Your problem is your black attitude”.

Three of the entourage are alleged to have then pounced on Okereke, punching and kicking him before Ricky Wilson (of Kaiser Chiefs) and Yannis Philippakis (of Foals) stepped in to mediate, and then they were attacked. The “unprovoked” attack has left Okereke with facial bruising and cuts to his face and body. Festival security then broke up the fight, while those involved were handcuffed and questioned. The fight was reported to both Spanish and British police.

Lydon has released a statement, carefully worded by the way, saying that “After the show, John Rotten and management remained behind to sign autographs, which we did for four solid hours without incident and had a great time talking to other Spanish bands.

“This seems to have sparked jealousy in certain bands.

“The trouble was brought to us, resulting in those causing the trouble being physically removed by festival security.

“It’s a shame that the wonderful world of the media is riddled with nonsense like this”

In reference to Okereke, Lydon added: “Grow up and learn to be a true man. When you have achieved as much as I have, come back and talk to me”.

All this says that Lydon is a hypocritical cunt. The old bastard seems a little angry at where the music industry is these days and has decided to join in the fun by reforming The Sex Pistols and making just a little more money from their legend. To top it off, he hangs around racist meatheads. And who said he was intelligent and progressive?

Lydon, you’re no longer as relevant as you once were and wish to be. Your time is over. You may not agree with the paths that contemporary musicians have chosen. That’s fine, your opinion is valid. That doesn’t mean that you have the right to so easily excuse an alleged racist attack by those associated with you.
You think that The Sex Pistols are the best thing to come from Britian? You’re sadly mistaken, you old twat. Fuck off.

BBC 6 Music is reporting that Kele Okereke (pictured above, second from left), the lead singer of Bloc Party, is accusing members of John Lydon’s entourage of a racist attack after a backstage fight at the Summercase Festival in Barcelona, Spain this past weekend at which Bloc Party and the Sex Pistols were both performing.

Okereke claims that he approached Lydon to ask if Lydon would consider reforming Public Image Ltd. and Lydon became aggressive. Okereke says that he then got into a fight with several members of Lydon’s entourage, one of whom allegedly told Okereke, “Your problem is your black attitude.”

Lydon denied the racist angle to the fracas, saying:

“I feel very sorry for a man that needs to lie about what was a perfect evening.

“The trouble was brought to us, resulting in those causing the trouble being physically removed by festival security.”

Okereke was wounded in the altercation and reported the incident to the local police.

The Kaiser Chiefs’ lead singer Ricky Wilson was reported to be among those trying to break up the fight.

smash Eyes Open, Snow Patrol reteamed with U2 producer Jacknife Lee to record in both the Irish countryside and Berlin. “We went from seeing nature to neon signs,” recalls frontman Gary Lightbody – who says the changing scenery matched the album’s mix of dramatic piano ballads (“Crack the Shutters Open”) and big-guitar rockers (“Take Back the City”).

As hump day approaches (and I await an inspection from my landlord, which means cleaning the house — props to my partner for mowing our shaggy lawn), I thought I’d kick out some jams. Or rather, highlight some ladies who’ve kicked out other people’s jams, making them their own in the process. I have selected the following covers, all performed in concert by female-only bands, to simulate a rock block on the classics station.

Let’s start it out all tart and British. Here we have The Raincoats covering “Lola” in a concert they performed last month. Originally by The Kinks, the song tells the story about a man being seduced by a transvestite. In their famous revision, however, the pursued is a proper English lady singing as man, adding at least two more levels of queerness.

Next up is Rasputina’s cover of Heart’s “Barracuda,” reminding all of us that cellos can rock just as hard as electric guitars. 

Finally, we close with Sleater-Kinney, a band whose sound was heavily indebted to rock legends like Led Zeppelin and The Who. But they also came of age during new wave’s brief but delicious reign, which is why I wanted to include their cover of The B-52s’ “Rock Lobster.”

And if I had anything to do with programming a classic rock station, early B-52s would totally be on our playlists because a) Ricky Wilson was an awesome guitarist and b) it don’t get more classic than Farfisas, bee-hives, and bikini whales. Bonus points for getting K Records impresario/Beat Happening frontman Calvin Johnson, who is famous for his monotone, to fill in for the considerably less monotone Fred Schneider. Plus, like Heart and The Raincoats, The B-52s are a veteran act who can still dance this mess around, as several ACL festival goers can attest. If given the chance, I have no doubt that S-K still can too.

It was the 26th of January 1980…. I was a huge fan of Saturday Night Live (it was a dangerous thing that my dad did…putting a TV in my room so I could stay up late at night and watch alternative stuff). I didn’t always pay attention to the band but this night they had this band on that was retro (60’s retro) looking and when they started playing… they sounded retro! I fell in LOVE with the band!!

The following Monday at school lots of people were talking about it (that’s what we did back in the old days… talk about TV shows we watched over the weekend). LOTS of people thought the band was just too weird and “what where they singing about a lobster for?”. I thought they were totally captivating!

When I was in high school I was NOT all about babysitting. I wasn’t a baby person and I’m still not but I had these next door neighbor who had a son who slept well and they would have me come over about 8 after he was in bed. While I was babysitting I found they had a B-52s album (YES Vinyl) and I would listen to it and dance around their living room while I baby sat (that and fix his Rubik’s cube). Turns out, the guy was a GA Tech graduate and had seen the band perform up in Atlanta. He had 2 of the same album and he gave me one, it was simply titled The B-52’s.

I took this album home and listened to it on my brothers stereo. He started liking it and he went and bought their other album Wild Planet. I still know all the words to all their songs from both of those albums. Mesopotamia was an awesome album too.. ALL their stuff is awesome.

As long as I have been a fan of theirs, I never saw them live. They preformed locally about 5 years ago but it was on my son’s birthday so I didn’t get to go. This year, made a decision and took action. I heard a message in my personal development call about how we buy what we want and don’t buy what we should (consumerism…) and we do what we should and not what we want.. and that’s pretty much backward. To me that means people are trying to BUY life experiences rather than DO life experiences.

When I found out they were going to be at the Arizona Fall Frenzy I was IN! There was nothing that was going to stop me from finally seeing my favorite all time band! …and it didn’t! Last Friday, I was at the concert and saw them live and they were still incredible after 30+ years of performing.

The reason I fell in love with The B-52s and why they became my all time favorite band… simple.. they are fun and energetic! They don’t sound like everyone else (or anyone else). They are still fun and energetic, I could see and feel that they still love what they do. It’s not a total drag for them to perform… they still love their old stuff as much as their new stuff. They honor all their music.

What an accomplishment for them to hold on to their energy, to keep themselves invigorated even in the face of personal tragedy. I am inspired by them every time I hear their music. To see them live was huge for me. As a train in England goes down the tracks… there is a wire on top of the train that snatches energy from overhead currents as they connect along the route…. I snatched a good bit of energy from them as I listened to their music and watched them perform.

Sometimes you just have to do something you want.. make it non negotiable. Allow yourself to have a moment by fulfilling this want. Don’t let anything stand in your way.

Ok, 2 dias de Leeds e e Reading já se foram e resta apenas 1 pra contar história, enquanto isso eu me mato no line-up, de novo….

RADIOHEAD, Arctic Monkeys, Maxïmo Park, The RAKES, YYY, The View, Vampire Weekend, Gossip, White Lies, The Maccabees, Patrick Wolf, Metric, Crystal Castles, Passion Pit, Florence and The Machine, The Courteeners, Metronomy, Golden Silvers ( que eu falei aqui dia desses), KOL, Kaiser Chiefs, Placebo, Jamie T, Friendly Fires, The Horrors, The Virgins, Bombay Bicycle Club, The Temper Trap e The XX.

Aliás, o The XX tem sido bem elogiado ultimamente, qualquer dia eu baixo o álbum todo deles e dou a minha opinião aqui.

E como sempre show do Radiohead, no Leeds, foi baphón (acho que isso não dá pra ser mais novidade)… o NME.com citou como ÉPICO!

E teve bafo nesse show do KOL. Eu amei os vídeos, ia ficar bem lok nesse show, mas parece que a galere do Reading não se empolgou muito não ( não vi nada tão desanimado assim, pelo menos não nessas quatro músicas), deixando o Nathan e o Caleb bem putos.

Segundo o NME.com, depois do show o Nathan twittou o seguinte:

“Reading? What the fuck? Zero love for the kings. I know it was cold but holy shit, y’all were frozen. I can only hope Leeds is in better form.”

Já o The sun publicou o seguinte:

“Os irmãos Nashville tocaram um set medíocre que não conseguiu cativar o público, em parte devido à acústica terrível e ventos fortes.

A voz rouca de Caleb Followill em “Closer” e “Four Kicks “, pouco fez para incentivar a multidão to sing-a-long, o que é normalmente esperado de um main stage.

Caleb tentou entusiasmar a galere, dizendo: “Eu pensei que essa era supostamente a platéia mais barulhenta do mundo!” E acrescentou antes de “Sex on Fire”: “Nós precisamos de vocês para nos ajudar a fazer isso.”

Caleb fez o possível para salvar os garotos do constrangimento, mais uma vez pedindo ao público para animar em “The Bucket”

Ele acabou com um discurso estranho, dizendo:

“We know you’re sick of Kings of Leon. We’re fucking sick of Kings of Leon too. But we get up here every night and I thank God for everything I’ve had.

“So for all those who don’t give a fuck about us, I understand. But we’ve worked hard to be here. We’re the god damn Kings of Leon, so fuck you.”

Agora não sei o que foi tão ruim assim pra esse piti todo.

B-52's

Para nuestra sección Rescatando del Olvido, hemos elegido esta vez a B-52’s, un grupo que bien se merece que le recordemos. Originarios de la ciudad de Athens (Georgia), la misma por cierto que REM,  fueron precursores de la new wave en USA y han completado una respetable trayectoria aunque con altibajos que continúa hasta nuestros días.

Los B-52’s apostaron desde sus comienzos por una línea musical que se desmarcaba de lo que sonaba a finales de los años 70. Con su debut en 1979 tuvieron un modesto éxito con su single Rock Lobster que les introdujo en el circuito underground, llegando a tocar en el mítico CBGB de Nueva York. En 1980 las chicas del grupo, Kate y Cindy, llegaron a cantar junto a Debbie Harry (Blondie) en la canción Chop Suey de los Ramones. Tal vez con los únicos que tenían algo en común eran los Talking Heads. Por eso fue algo natural que David Byrne, alma mater de estos últimos, acabara siendo uno de sus productores aunque su participación resultó fallida. Las sesiones de grabación del que iba a ser su tercer LP se suspendieron y en vez de un disco completo se publicó el EP Mesopotamia.

Consiguieron sobreponerse al fallecimiento por SIDA de su guitarrista Ricky Wilson en 1985, pasando el batería Keith Strickland a tocar las 6 cuerdas, y tras 3 años de paréntesis sin sacar ningún disco después del póstumo Bouncing Off The Satellites, el éxito que se les resistía hasta entonces les llegó en 1989 con su séptimo álbum, el excepcional Cosmic Thing. Parece que se cumplía un nuevo ejemplo de un gran disco tras la muerte de uno de sus miembros (como el Back In Black de AC/DC por decir alguno sonado). Mucha culpa de ello la tuvieron la pareja de productores, los míticos Don Was y Nile Rodgers. Fue número 1 en Estados Unidos y el 8 en Inglaterra, y no es para menos porque contenía canciones tan buenas como la acelerada Bushfire, el hit Love Shack, Deadbeat Club con una línea de bajo contagiosa, Channel Z y su singular ritmo de guitarra, la frenética Cosmic Thing, o la deliciosa Roam que nos siguen pareciendo a día de hoy una magnífica muestra de pop fresco y bailable. Además combinado con una serie de videos alegres y ocurrentes que encajaban perfectamente con la música y la imagen del grupo y que podéis ver clickando en los enlaces anteriores. A las pegadizas melodías había que añadir el contrapunto que daba la voz grave y peculiar de Fred Schneider frente al peso de las dos espléndidas voces femeninas del grupo, Cindy Wilson (hermana de Ricky) y Kate Pierson. No es de extrañar que después de este disco muchos quisieron colaborar con esta última. REM, sus paisanos de Athens, le llamaron para que cantase en tres canciones de su disco Out Of Time, entre ellas la festiva Shiny Happy People y la iguana Iggy Pop hizo la impresionante Candy junto a ella en 1991. La popularidad del grupo aumentó aún más si cabe cuando aparecieron en la película Los Picapiedra cantando varias canciones como Bedrock Twitch y la que daba título al film The Flintstones. Justo cuando su popularidad era más alta a mediados de los 90, el grupo rebajó su actividad sólo alterada por alguna aparición en televisión, esporádicas giras y alguna colaboración puntual. Este paréntesis en la carrera de B-52’s duró hasta el año pasado en el que editaron Funplex, un nuevo disco con canciones originales 16 años después. Sacaron 2 singles que mantenían las características que antaño les habían dado éxito pero con un sonido actual, y realizaron 2 videos marca de la casa que están así de bien como podéis comprobar viendo el de Funplex y el de Juliet Of  The Spirits. Podemos estar de enhorabuena que un grupo tan original y creativo siga sacando discos y prodigándose en conciertos. Este verano los podrás ver si pasas por EEUU o si te dejas caer por Australia a finales de año. Aunque ándate con ojo, porque el año pasado estuvieron en Madrid y la entrada costaba como el número de su nombre, o sea 52 eurazos. Os dejamos con ese viaje que empieza con un beso de Roam en el FIB del 2007 que os dejará sin aliento.

Nádia Lapa, ressurgindo das cinzas

Ricky Wilson és Nick Hodgson – akik nem először vezetnek rádióadást, tavaly Steve Lamacq műsorába ugrottak be – az A Month Of Sundays című műsort vezetik majd a BBC Radio 6-on, június 7-től egy hónapig minden vasárnap 15.30-tól 17.30-ig. „Nick és én már nagyon várjuk, hogy átrágjuk magunkat a lemezgyűjteményeinken, hogy lejátsszuk kedvenc számainkat és mindenféle újdonságot, ami megtetszik.” – nyilatkozta Wilson.

ANALYSE – Rock Werchter heeft sinds vandaag weer een paar nieuwe namen op de affiche bijgekregen. Eén daarvan is Kaiser Chiefs, weeral. Weeral inderdaad, want het is al de vierde keer op rij dat de Britse indieband naar het beste festival ter wereld afzakt.

Herman Schueremans mag dan al veel goede namen hebben binnengehaald voor de 36e editie van zijn festival, maar Kaiser Chiefs wééral? Het begint wat van het goede te veel te worden. Het is al de vierde keer op rij dat zanger Ricky Wilson zijn zo gekende halsbrekende sprongen zal tentoon stellen. Naast zijn nieuwe en oude songs uiteraard. Kaiser Chiefs is met die vier keer op rij de enige band die dat presteert in de geschiedenis van Rock Werchter.

AANDACHTIG?

Dat er zondag 5 juli veel volk zal gaan kijken naar de band, is zeker. Ze staan immers op het hoofdpodium.  Maar of daar veel aandachtige luisteraars zullen tussen zitten is nog maar de vraag.  Hoe het er nu naar uitziet, zijn Kaiser Chiefs  geprogrammeerd tussen verschillende groepen die bekend staan voor het hardere gitaarwerk. Metallica en Mastodon zijn daar maar enkele voorbeelden van.

VOORSPELBAAR

De meest recente cd, de derde, Off With Their Heads viel al lichtelijk tegen, dus het is afwachten geblazen hoe het vijftal dat gaat omzetten in een goed concert. Die concerten zijn over het algemeen altijd wel dik in orde, alleen werd het de laatste keren toch ietsje te voorspelbaar. Het trouwe publiek kon zo zeggen wanneer Ricky in de lucht ging springen of wanneer de toeschouwers, verdeeld in twee delen, hen moesten aanmoedigen door de ene helft ‘Kaiser’ en de andere helft ‘Chiefs’ te laten roepen.

Voor een vierde keer ga ik waarschijnlijk dus passen. (JS)

Ruby Ruby Ruby hoe Kaiser Chiefs het vorig jaar op Rock Werchter speelden. Mogen we dit jaar hetzelfde verwachten?

Uken startet med prikking i hele kroppen, temperaturen kjennes ut som den er på – 10 og er egetlig på godt over 39, kaldsvette, Dr. Phil og The Hills. Det var influensaen som slo til, men jeg reddet meg selv og kom meg på bena tross fredag den 13. Henter søs på skolen, Henriette og Kristin på skolen og starter kjøreturen inn til oslo. Forventningene øker jo nærmere jeg kommer Sentrum Scene. Vi setter søs av hos farfar og starter kveldens eventyr ved å finne et sted å spise. Vi ender opp på et koselig, lite sted og tar oss en øl og litt mat. Når vi etter frosne tær og dessert på Deli De Luca, kommer inn på Sentrum Scene hvor Kaiser Chiefs om få strakser skal rocke scenen (forhåpentligvis!) blir det en øl til og litt skravling. Oppvarmingsbandet Dananananaykroyd starter, og virker litt tvilsomme til å starte med, men de heftige trommebeatene og den heite trommisen/vokalisten tar meg med storm og det endte med at jeg kjøpte cd’en. Så starter konserten jeg har gledet meg til siden den gule billetten kom i posten. Andre rad og temperaturen øker. Ricky Wilson kommer, litt skeiv, ut på scenen og spiller slager på slager. Stemningen øker jo lengre ut i konserten vi kommer og jeg personlig drømmer meg lengre og lengre bort fra denne verdenen og inn i musikkens. Etter konserten er jeg klar for flere opplevelser som denne og det tar ikke lang tid før billetter til Eagles of death metal og Skambankt er bestilt.

Por un post y en espera de que anuncien el cartel completo del SOS 4.8 vía web que está al caer, han dicho los organizadores que a eso de las 12:30, voy a abandonar los eventos musicales y/o culturales por algo de prensa rosa, pero eso sí, con artistas musicales de por medio.

Resulta que hace unos días, Ricky Wilson, cantante de Kaiser Chiefs, recibió en su teléfono móvil un mensaje con foto adjunta de Lily Allen, su sorpresa llegó cuando resulta que la chica se hizo la foto haciendo Topless!! No sabemos si Ricky se hizo muchas ilusiones con lo que parecía ser toda una declaración de intenciones, y decimos “parecía” porque resulta que lo que realmente ocurrió fue que Lily se equivocó de destinatario, porque a quien quería enviar el MMS era ….Rick Astley. Que no es por nada Lily, pero podría ser tu padre! Rick tendría mucho éxito en los 80, pero ahora es un viejuno.

The BBC, which cancelled the UK television institution Top of the Pops in 2006 after a 42-year run, has decided to bring the program back for two holiday specials to air at Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

Many artists were displeased when Top of the Pops was taken off the air two years ago. When the news broke of the show’s holiday revival, several artists spoke to BBC 6 Music about its importance. Jarvis Cocker said:

“I was brought up on TOTP and it formed my idea of what pop bands were about. I always tried to make sure that I watched it and I was very sad when it died off.

“The good thing about TOTP was that it was just such a very simple idea. It was just like, if you were in the charts, you were in the program. There was a period in British pop music history where it was pretty varied, but now, I don’t know whether it’s that varied.”

Ricky Wilson of Kaiser Chiefs said to BBC 6 Music:

“I think that TOTP was the only time that kids could be watching a program with their mums and dads where they would feel proud to be part of something.”

BBC1 controller Jay Hunt told BBC News:

“With shows on Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve, Top of the Pops has never been bigger. The shows will form the centerpiece of a massive musical offering during the festive season that we hope viewers are really going to enjoy.”

The Kaiser Chiefs have spoken out to The Sunday Times in defense of their upcoming album, Off With Their Heads. While some devout hipsters might be raising eyebrows over the band’s choice to work with celebrity producer Mark Ronson, singer Ricky Wilson defends their decision by stating, ‘If you’ve got a producer who wants to work with you… and the man’s winning Grammys, I mean, you’d be daft not to.’ The band are also quick to defend the speedy timing of the album’s release stating that they are only releasing it because it is done, not because they were rushing to follow up their last success.

The album, by the way, is out October 20th and has already garnered rave reviews.
