Decoding Ring o' Roses

Here’s the version I learned as a child:

Ring-a-round the rosie,
A pocket full of posies,
Ashes! Ashes!
We all fall down.

Those of us who grew up in the latter half of the 20th century were probably told at some point that this singing game came from the 17th century and was about dying from the black plague, and explanation that apparently was invented in the 1950s and by now has been debunked.
