This is a goal that I have to put among my favourites because of the build up and movement all over the pitch and the run off the ball by Theo Walcott to create the space for the goal.

There are so many coaching points in this clip it is worth showing your players.

Watch Walcott’s movement at the end of the move which drags Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, two of the world’s most experienced defenders, to create the space that allows Samir Nasri to score this goal.

It is the perfect example for any young player to watch, Walcott does not touch the ball yet has a big hand in creating the goal and Nasri explodes into the space to score.

Also look out for a great hook turn from Cesc Fabregas. The movement all over the pitch is very good.

You missed some drama today, guys. Or maybe you pay close attention to what 14-year-old girls are do

You missed some drama today, guys. Or maybe you pay close attention to what 14-year-old girls are doing, idk. Anyway, over the past few days, Tumblr developed its very own “burn book”, the hollowed-out shell of which you can see here. In short: overweight attention whores were calling out other otherweight attention whores for being… eh, you can guess the rest. What made the whole thing of mild lulz, though, was that every email the site maintainer received going “You know, this is kinda lamesauce” was responded to with a 400-word diatribe of “YOU THINK THIS IS BULLYING YOU TRY GOING TO SCHOOL AND HAVING 400 PEOPLE THROW STUFF AT YOU EVERY DAY AND SETTING FIRE TO YOUR HAIR”. Nothing more awkward than when someone drops in unnecessary personal life detail into their day-to-day conversation, which is why I make a rule never to hold conversations with people whose mothers have walked out on them. Anyway: kids – bullying is bad. The BBC have asked some celebrities to tell you so. We here at ILB thought we’d review said advice. It’s like Book of Lists, only ten years later and not funny.

(Danny Dyer Joke) (50 Cent Joke) (Brenda Blethyn Joke) (Cunt with wavy lips joke). Someone should really remind Rio about the “stop snitching” movement as well. Maybe be worth also noting that every single “related video” for this is of “Rio” by Duran Duran, which strikes me as a failure on behalf of Manchester United’s digital marketing team. Get it sorted, Glazer. 3/10

One of the things I’ve become fascinated with recently is this kind of discussion on fetish message boards: brainwashing a woman into becoming a slut vs brainwashing her into becoming a bimbo, which is better. I just like how there are clearly guys out there who are going to get enraged if they sit down for a nice piece of misogynistic personality-shift fiction, and find out that the lead charater’s hair doesn’t even turn blonde. Anyway, Pixie Lott is quite clearly simple as pigshit but I still would without question. 6/10

It’s quite nice how everyone in society can bring themselves to agree on what on awful person Fearne Cotton clearly is, to the extent that people are actively wishing for Holly Willoughby to go on to have a lengthy career as it should keep FC firmly held down. Remember kids: if you’re being beaten up, just put on some lipstick and bump “Kashmir”. That’ll sort everything out. 0/10

Am I supposed to know who these guys are? Music stopped being any good when people stopped using the word “bubbling” in songs. In fairness, turning yourself into a walking joke for the amusement of school bullies is a way to stop getting beaten up, so fair point. 8/10

We used to bully a kid called Mark at school. He was really shy and introverted, so he used to get jostled about a bit, ragged on during classes, etc. Anyway, eventually he snapped and bought a scalpel to school saying he was going to kill all the Pakistani kids. Last time I saw him his face was on a “missing” poster with “do not approach may be confused and disorientated” written underneath it. Ah well. 2/10

After falling to the LA Galaxy in the MLS playoffs, Preki’s contract with Chivas USA was not renewed.

What do Inter Milan and every FM player in the world have in common? Both of them tried to buy Messi in the last transfer window.

Rio Ferdinand received a mystery injection to cure his mystery injury after said injury caused his mysteriously bad recent form.

Jermaine Defoe has vowed to curb “rushes of blood to the head”; Steven Gerrard wishes everyone would just quit making fun of his music already.

If you had Osasuna in the “next club to lose players to H1N1″ pool, step up and collect your prize.

Nani claims that he has no problems with Sir Alex Ferguson. Nani clearly doesn’t understand that only Sir Alex Ferguson can tell you that you don’t have problems with Sir Alex Ferguson.

Your Copa Sudamericana semifinal update: River Plate 2-1 Liga de Quito; Fluminese 1-0 Cerro Porteno.

England has a chance to win the 2010 World Cup, according to…Lucas Leiva.

Finally, let’s pull one from the ATD archives (since I thought the Hate Match was OCTOBER 14th when in fact it will be played tomorrow on NOVEMBER 14th): The Hate Match Could be Played Twice

As an avid follower of fighting tournaments, its an exciting weekend for little old me. Sexy David Haye takes on the gruesome Nikolai Valuev.

I interviewed the lovely David for Rio Ferdinands magazine not too long ago, delving into his private life. What is the most expensive thing you’ve had to buy a partner to apologise for doing something naughty? I asked. His answer was so sweet, i ended up squeezing his face and calling him a cutie pie! You’ve got to watch the vid to see his answer yourself!

Valuev reaching an almighty height of 7ft and a face which could melt anyones dinner, is bookies fave to flatten the Hayemaker. Does size matter? Ahhhh a question longed to be answered. Not in all cases guys

RANDOM- It still makes me giggle George Foreman was originally a boxer, is it just me or can you only associate him with lean meat now too???? Just me???

David has certainly been giving him fighting talk, the insults have been flowing like wine! The beast has never been floored and is a champion yet to be beat.

GIRLY MOMENT… Have you seen David’s body compared to Shreks? Daaaaaamn Haye you lookin fine boy! Valuev isnt even toned!!!

I know i’ve already said this to you a hundred times but SLAY THE MONSTER! GOOD LUCK GOOD LUCK GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’ll be watching with my popcorn and Cosmo’s! Mwwwwaaaaah!

A World Cup wouldn’t be a World Cup without an injury blow for England. With Rio Ferdinand still plagued by niggles, will his lower back be the Beckham metatarsal of South Africa 2010?

In 2002, Danny Mills and Trevor Sinclair somehow found their way into Sven-Goran Eriksson’s World Cup starting line up. In 2004, England looked on top of their quarter final tie with Portugal, which they eventually lost, until Wayne Rooney broke his foot. Two years later, Michael Owen twisted and turned; his brittle body succumbing, not for the first time in his injury laden career.

England’s preparation and execution of major tournaments in recent years has been hampered by injury to key players. Of course that is not the only problem; not the sole reason England have failed to conquer the Brazils and Portugals of this world. But it is a factor.

So who will it be this year? Which player will we be praying recovers for the opening group game? Whose hamstring will we be symbolically gluing together as a nation? Who will Uri Geller be sending his foot-fixing, spellbinding remedies to?

Well according to Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, Rio Ferdinand’s seemingly endless string of injuries could be linked to a problem with his lower back.

“Usually you are back from a calf injury within two or three weeks,” said Ferguson.

“But there is no sign of recovery from this injury so we are looking at whether it is to do with his lower back.”

Ferdinand is likely to miss several more matches for both Manchester United and England, who play Qatar in a friendly later this month.

The centre half’s injury problems will be worrying for Fabio Capello. Ferdinand was an integral part of the England side that lost just one game on their way to World Cup qualification.

And despite his recent drop in form, the last thing that Capello would need is his starting eleven being broken up.

Added to that, there aren’t too many options for England past Ferdinand and captain John Terry. Joleon Lescott has struggled in an England shirt and has been uninspiring since his summer move to Manchester City where he has shifted Micah Richards from his centre half berth, throwing Richards’ World Cup place into doubt too.

Matthew Upson and Curtis Davies are competent Premier League defenders, but by no means international class ones.

Ledley King is a man mountain if fully fit, but there is zero chance of him heading to South Africa this summer because of his temperamental knee. Likewise, Phil Jagielka’s long injury lay-off means he has plenty of work to do to regain the form that he showcased last season.

The likes of Gary Cahill have plenty of promise, but 2010 may be a few years to early for them to blossom on the big stage.

This is why it is vital that Ferdinand is fully fit for England’s campaign. While pondering over the right wing position or the inclusion of Joe Cole may be important to the Three Lions’ ambitions, having Ferdinand and Terry at the heart of the defence is absolutely fundamental.

At the moment seven players in United’s first team squad are injured: Berbatov (knee), Welbeck

At the moment seven players in United’s first team squad are injured: Berbatov (knee), Welbeck (knee), Giggs (knee), Vidic (calf), Ferdinand (calf), Park (knee) and Hargreaves (knee) according to PhysioRoom. This is more than the average of four injuries among PL-clubs, but not particularly alarming since e.g. Liverpool have eight and Arsenal seven. Of the seven probably only Ferdinand and Hargreaves are long term worries.

The number of injuries of course fluctuates over a season and I can’t say that United have been worse hit than other clubs. I did, however, get seriously worried by an article in yesterday’s Guardian. It concerns Darren Fletcher’s ankle injury that kept him out for the five games previous to the CL-tie against CSKA this week. A bit of bone has broken off the back of his ankle and stuck about an inch away. This causes him significant pain during matches and will eventually require surgery. He’s had an injection to clear it up for a while.

I was under the impression that Fletcher picked up this injury this season, but it turns out that it is in fact a long term recurring problem.

“I have had it for a couple of years now and the build up of fluids and other medical things that the doctors know far more about than me has been constantly aggravating it”, says Fletcher.

So why didn’t he have an operation at the end of last season??!! One possible explanation is that with Hargreaves still missing Ferguson was very reluctant to risk being without Fletcher for the beginning of this season.

Maybe I’m too critical but I see similarities to the injuries of Ferdinand and Hargreaves. In Ferdinand’s case it seems as though the treatment focus on relieving the symptoms rather than the root cause in order to get him back on the field within a week or two. With Hargreaves I find it hard to shake off the feeling that he should have had his operations a lot earlier.

It’s a difficult balance to strike, but my impression is that Ferguson and/or the physio team should look for long term cures for injuries a bit earlier, rather than push on through pain.

A word of advice for Rio Ferdinand: you will have plenty of time to attend movie premieres, start a

A word of advice for Rio Ferdinand: you will have plenty of time to attend movie premieres, start a music label and run your very own magazine when you decide to hang up your boots. Until then, as long as a fat cheque comes to your house every week signed by Manchester United Football Club, kindly concentrate all your energy and effort on the pitch.

Ferdinand attended a premiere in London just hours after flying back from the CSKA match in Moscow. The movie he attended was called Dead Man Running (which is how some people would describe the way he’s defending now), which he co-produced with Ashley Cole. A few days later, he was up against Fernando Torres at Anfield and we all know what happened there.

There is no doubting the England international’s quality. On his day, he is the best defender on the planet. Sadly, during the night, he thinks he’s a hip-hop artist.

He has mentioned his desire to continue playing into his late thirties. With his persistent back problem, if he wants to be the English Paulo Maldini, he certainly needs to look after himself and stick to the special core-based training regime United has set out for him, which includes massage therapy several times a week. Most men would give their right hand to get free massages every week.

Sir Alex Ferguson might be regretting his decision not to sign any defensive reinforcements over the summer. He thought, as many of us did, that United’s first choice backline was in good shape and the likes of Jonny Evans, Wes Brown and the da Silva twins would provide more than adequate reinforcement when injuries and suspensions kicked in.

These squad players have not disappointed when called upon. It’s the established personnel like Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and even John O’ Shea, who you could count upon to give a 6.5/10 performance every week in almost any position, that have not stepped up so far this season.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Was it a mistake to let Gerard Pique leave for Barcelona? He’s in the Spanish first XI now but he had struggled with the pace of the English game, one of the reasons why he never made the step up from the reserves and was let go for a paltry six million pounds. Would he have been able to stop Torres from scoring that first goal at Anfield?

Form is temporary, class is permanent. United desperately need Vidic and Ferdinand to re-establish their brick wall at the back. A solid central defensive pairing breathes confidence into the rest of the team. After all, the best offence is a good defence. I’m on a roll with all these sporting clichés!

A bigger problem for Sir Alex has been the lack of a dictator (not the Mussolini kind) in the middle of the park. At this moment in time, no one in a United jersey is in the mould of Cesc Fabregas or Xavi and this has hurt the Red Devils attacking play, especially against the bigger sides. It’s been a long time since the slots of Captain Courageous (Roy Keane) and Captain Creativity (Eric Cantona) were taken up.

Paul Scholes, for all his cross-field passes and terribly mistimed tackling, has looked out of place and breath trying to keep up with the fast paced nature of the game today. A lot of faith seems to be placed on the shoulders of young Gabriel Obertan, who could turn out to be the next Franck Ribery. Put him under too much pressure and he becomes David Bellion.

The risk of being dominated by teams employing packed midfields is greater now that Sir Alex has reverted to the 4-4-2 formation of yesteryear. It has suited the pure wing-play of Antonio Valencia but has heaped plenty of responsibility on the two central midfielders to dominate proceedings.

Whilst Anderson and Darren Fletcher have shown themselves to be up for the task, questions are still being raised over the supply to the forwards through the middle. Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov have dropped back many times out of frustration for the lack of chances being created for them. Would someone like Daniele de Rossi or Yoann Gourcuff be the missing jigsaw piece of the United midfield puzzle?

Again, in hindsight, should Fergie have splashed the Ronaldo transfer cash on David Silva from Valencia? The Spaniard oozes quality and would have been a good fit in the United team. He could rotate the left wing and forward position with Rooney, just as the latter does on England duty with Steven Gerrard to such great effect.

What makes Sir Alex stand apart from all of us is his tremendous foresight. It has served him so well in the past and this season will be no different – I hope. Or else Rio Ferdinand’s music career may be starting sooner than we expected.

No matter how many underwear ads he steals off of him david Becham has proved Cristiano Ronaldo doesn’t know nothing about promotion yet. A painting of Becks’ footprint has sold for half a million dollars! The 21st Century Leadership Awards were held in Doha, Qatar, last Friday. The event included an auction of unique art pieces, one of which was a painting by renowned contemporary artist Sacha Jafri: ‘David Beckham – A Celebration’ . Originally valued at $1.4mn, the painting raked in the lion’s share of the total 1.26 mn raised by the event, the proceeds of which will go to various charitable programmes chosen by the celebrities involved. The painting which is a celebration of the achievements of David Beckham on and off the field is the only painting in the world featuring both his footprint and signature!

Strangely this isn’t the first time Beckham’s footprint has graced Sacha Jafri’s canvas. About three years back Sacha made ‘Celebration’ – a 6ft by 7ft painting which represented different aspects of Beck’s life featuring 12 of his many goals and 4 of his several hairstyles. The Mohican, the hairband , the swept to the side and the slick look all made it in to this incredible painting however his wifeVictoria Beckham didn’t! The painting was bought by a mystery buyer at an auction for £125,000

Besides Beckham’s footprint ‘Celebration’ also included the handprints of Rio Ferdinand, Paul Gascoigne, Paul Merson, Cesc Fabregas, (get ready for this Chelsea fans)… John Terry, Frank Lampard, Rudd Gullit and Gianfranco Zola!

Now thats what I call a peice of art!

Well, there there was certainly no doubting the star of this week’s Actim Index, was there? After weeks of replacing a number of conservatory and house windows, the double glazing firms of Portsmouth can take it easy. Aruna Dindane has finally found his shooting boots. It would not be unkind to say that the Ivory Coast striker has struggled to adapt since moving to England but, as Wigan found out to their cost on Saturday, the boy is a little handy. Three goals and a week–high score of 64 earned him the performance of the week and a place in the Team of the Week. His sketchy performances of earlier in the season means he is still down in 141st place overall, though, but hey, who’s complaining?

Well, Hull manager Phil Brown was actually. If the Geordie Jose Mourinho didn’t have enough on his plate before Saturday’s clash with Burnley, then ‘beachball ref’ Mike Jones ensured that he was full up by the time he left Turf Moor. The Tigers were beaten 2–0 at Turf Moor, with evergreen Burnley star Graham Alexander scoring twice earning his 48 points – the third best of the week. Alexander is as grizzly and as seasoned as they come and was maybe the sort of player new Hull chairman Adam Pearson was referring to on Monday when he said City’s squad had “too much champagne and not enough ale.” Brown will need some of his home brews, namely Jan Venegoor of Hesselink (262nd), Nick Barmby (272nd) and King Tweeter Jozy Altidore (349th) to show their worth if he is to save his job against Stoke on Sunday.

Tottenham certainly made a lot of noise about being able to match Arsenal stride for stride, didn’t they? And what better way to put it to the test than a good old ding–dong of a north London derby. And, for a while, it looked like game on. Then, as quickly as you can say ‘Cesc Fabregas has got the ball and made a mug out of Tottenham’s midfield’ the game was over. Robin van Persie led the way for the Gunners, with his brace bringing him 52 points. He occupies fourth place in the overall Index, with Fabregas second and Thomas Vermaelen in fifth. Robbie Keane is Tottenham’s highest-ranked player in eighth. As they say on the London underground, mind the gap.

It was also another bad week for Liverpool. Down to nine men and beaten 3–1 at Fulham, questions are being raised, yet again, over Rafael Benitez’s future. The media made a big fuss of footage of him sweating on the touchline at Craven Cottage, trying to make out the pressure was getting to him. And, if it was, who can blame him? With Fernando Torres (3), Glen Johnson (15) and Steven Gerrard (52) all injured, the Spaniard’s squad is bound to feel the pinch. But, is Benitez partly to blame? His much–maligned back-up strikers come in as follows: David Ngog (256), Ryan Babel (273) and Andriy Voronin (313). His castaways, namely Keane (8) and Craig Bellamy (17) suggest that Rafa shouldn’t be having to sweat quite so much.

There’s been a lot of brouhaha about Graham Taylor’s comments that Rio Ferdinand’s best days are behind him. The original Rolls Royce of English defending, if there was one thing that wasn’t going to let Rio down then it was surely his legs? But, Sir Alex Ferguson insists Ferdinand will be back and, who is to argue with the great knight? But, maybe Fabio Capello is looking at possible alternatives for South Africa 2010? And if he is, here’s who might be fancying their chances. Sunderland’s cut–price bargain Michael Turner (formerly part of the Phil Brown Ale already mentioned) is 21st in the overall Index, with long–term England squaddy Gary Cahill in 22nd. You’d probably be happy to take either to the tournament, as you would Joleon Lescott (85) and Matthew Upson (105). All are charting higher than Rio (196), but brother Anton Ferdinand (58) and Titus Bramble (33)? A return first–class ticket for Mr R Ferdinand, please.

And finally, it wouldn’t be fair to go through the week without mentioning Chelsea. A supreme performance at Bolton, capped off by the arguable the goal of the season from Didier Drogba. Those that said Drogba and Nicolas Anelka couldn’t play together have not been heard for a while either. Drogba leads the way in the Index, holding a 37–point lead over Fabregas, while Anelka is tucked away in sixth. The envy of many, Ashley Cole, is in 23rd while Frank Lampard is surprisingly in 34th. But, with the England midfielder now back in the scoring groove, he can expect to climb the Index quicker than the Bolton fans are to boo manager Gary Megson.

They say you shouldn’t judge books by their covers, so with that in mind I’m going to ridicule and diminish a film based on a few known facts about it rather than actually seeing it.

Dead Man Running was introduced to the UK on Friday but hopefully it will be a few weeks before it reaches the whole country. Think of it like swine flu, It’s inevitable that you will be exposed to it but you can delay it by taking precautions such us not going the cinema.

This film stars Danny Dyer AND 50 Cent. Danny Dyer is that loveable geezer masturbating furiously in all those hooligan/gang documentaries on Sky One, you know the one. 50 Cent is the product of an experiment to see if human beings could be made out of marketability alone.

If that doesn’t sell it to you, on the production team are two bonehead footballers, Ashley Cole and Rio Ferdinand. Ferdinand proudly claimed to have got Fifty to work for nothing. A proponent of slave labour! You bastard!

The plot is that this guy Nick owes Fifty money. To make sure that Fifty gets his money he kidnaps his wheelchair-bound mother and holds her hostage. Which is convenient, you don’t need to tie her to a chair or anything because she brought her own. Not just a hat stand.

So Nick and Danny Dyer go up and down the country trying to get the money and all sorts of shit happens. I’m sure it’s terrific. Go see it, tell me how it is.

For the last three seasons United’s success (including three consecutive PL-titles) has to a large extent been built on the solid foundation of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic. This season the partnership has looked rather more shaky. But I have felt that even though this was perhaps not as insignificant as a “blip” it would still sort itself out before long. Until now. After the defeat at Anfield I now believe that central defence is turning into a long term problem.

Throughout his career Rio Ferdinand has been accused of occasionally going to sleep and lacking concentration, but this problem largely disappeared a few years ago. Lately his focus might have suffered more from all kinds of off-field activities that seem to occupy his mind. This stretches from becoming a father to editing his own magazine, involving himself in a restaurant venture and producing movies. Still the most serious problem is probably his fitness. He needs continous physiotherapy for his recurring back spasms and hasn’t been able to fully join in training for most of the season. My impression is that the doctors don’t know the root of the problem and are just treating the symptoms.

In previous seasons Nemanja Vidic has occasionally looked vulnerable to pace. This was most obvious when he was humiliated by Torres at Old Trafford last season. Three successive red cards against Liverpool/Torres is not a coincidence. This season he seems to be in trouble more often. One example is that he was lucky not to be sent off against Wolfsburg, when he found it difficult to handle Dzeko and Grafite. Meanwhile rumours continue to surface that Vidic (or his wife) is tired of England and would prefer to live in Spain or Italy. It’s also very likely that Barcelona will be in the market for a central defender next summer.

Perhaps I’m wrong in describing our defensive rock as a partnership, when in fact Edwin van der Sar has been very much a part of it. The fact that Van der Sar has been injured for a large part of this season, and that Ben Foster has looked out of his depth has made it more difficult for Vidic and Ferdinand. It would be so much easier to ease in a new keeper if the Ferdinand-Vidic partnership was in perfect shape.

I fear that we might in fact be moving towards a scenario where Van der Sar retires, Vidic leaves for Spain and Ferdinand struggles even more with injuries. This would leave Ferguson with a major rebuilding challenge in a key area. Thank heavens for Jonny Evans.

After conceding two goals to pace (one against Craig Bellamy, the other against Fernando Torres), Rio Ferdinand is set to be dropped from the Manchester United first team.

Tottenham has submitted plans for a 56,250 seat stadium that could replace White Hart Lane as soon as the 2013/14 season.

Roman Pavlyuchenko has been urged to give Harry Redknapp a selection headache in Tottenham’s Carling Cup match against Everton today.

Real Madrid will offer Rafael van der Vaart to Chelsea in January; considering that Chelsea couldn’t sign him even if they wanted to, I’m going to chalk this one up as a rumor.

Stephen Appiah – who is presently without a club – would be open to playing for Bologna.

Steve McClaren has earned a 12-month contract extension from FC Twente.

::: FistedAway today welcomes a guest post from Elliott Tucker, editor of the rather lovely Futfanatico :::

News reports indicate that Sir Alex is absolutely livid after Russian customs destroyed specially crafted regenerative meals for his Manchester United side. However, a series of player tweets reveals this is not the first time the Scot has crossed swords over a culinary conflict.

RoyKeaneSanest tweeted at RealRioFerd that “Makes me think of Veron at tea time! ! !”. A look at Juan Sebastian Veron’s blog revealed that his move to Chelsea was not a simple move to cut costs – but rather a punishment for his 5pm antics. While most brits enjoy milk in their tea, Veron, of Argentine descent, insisted on bringing his own Thermos and bitter yerba mate tea to drink. Suspicious or curious, Sir Alex took one sip and promptly spat the brew all over Veron’s face. And then sold Veron to the Blues at a cut-rate price, happy to shift the “dirty, filthy criminal” to London.

"That was pure lavado, ya bam"

Giggs4Life tweeted: “lol – makes me think of Forlan’s last supper”. While initially perplexed, a few direct message exchanges revealed to futfanatico that Diego Forlan’s falling out with Sir Alex revolved around dinnertime etiquette, not the length of his studs. At one of the team meals, Diego had purportedly used a steak knife to cut off an extra thin slice of angel food cake. Sir Alex, ever vigilant, waited for Forlan to take a bite before smashing the entire piece into the Uruguayan´s face. “Welcome to civilisation, ya bassa,” raged Sir Alex, “Yous’ll no be needin’ that Sgian Dhubh fae your tortilla española“. Forlan was promptly sold to Villareal. The steak knife remains at the Old Trafford dining hall.

Meanwhile, BigWayne tweeted a sigh of relief – “Glad not there, already got his tail up n whatnot.”, then minutes later adding the additional tweet: “La”. Confidential sources revealed that, despite his fine goalscoring form, Wayne’s career at United is on a knife-edge, and all due to a single fork. One week ago, while munching on a nutritionally approved caesar salad, Rooney mistook his salad fork for his dessert fork. While Ferguson can forgive a fluffed shot, his reaction just may have gone over the top; the manager allegedly grabbed the dessert fork and… stabbed Rooney in the thigh! While the physical damage was minimal, the psychological toll led Rooney miss the trip to Moscow and seek psychological help. Allegedly he still has nightmares, with a voice echoing “How about some more Scouse salad!? EY!?” as Ferguson (and Terry Phelan, a little in the distance) force chips down Wayne’s throat.

::: Elliott Tucker is the editor of Futfanatico :::

That was the weekend that was…

.

1. Liverpool deserved to beat Man Utd yesterday but I think Fergie was right to have another moan at the ref. For me Carragher should definitely have been sent off for the tug on Owen in the second half. It can be argued that it wasn’t a clear opportunity but I think he would have got a shot away before the other defenders closed him down, they were quite far away.

His hatchet job on Carrick in the first half was a penalty – Carrick just got to the ball before Carragher and you just can’t go lunging in like that in that area of the pitch. He somehow got away with both but once more looked like the weak link in the Liverpool defence. The Vidic and Mascherano reds were both justified I reckon – I can’t believe the Serb has been sent off in three straight games against Liverpool!

It was clear that both managers had gambled with their unfit strikers and from what we saw it was clear that Torres had recovered more than Rooney. The Spaniard took his goal magnificently, both out-pacing and out-muscling Rio Ferdinand. He didn’t do much else during the game but it was enough. It’s a tough call between him and Drogba for title of best striker in the league but I’d possibly veer on the side of Torres right now. A good result for Liverpool but lets see if they can do the same away at Fulham next week.

Eats Vidic and Rio for breakfast.

Man Utd meanwhile have a few areas of concern. Both centre backs seem currently susceptible to pace (not something you’d previously say for Rio) so what chance Jonny Evans coming in for a bit? In midfield Fletcher was once more missed – the one bright note being that he and the soon to return Hargreaves will be a fearsome partnership. Up front, Rooney can be forgiven for being unfit but he has been out of form regardless. Berbatov on the other hand did his usual thing of nice flicks and passes but no real cutting edge. He doesn’t really do it in the big games does he?

.

2. For the third time in a week Arsenal completely switched off in a game where they went ahead and for the second time in a week it proved costly. After getting away with against Birmingham, they conceded a last minute equaliser against AZ Alkmaar in midweek Champions League action. They’ve learnt their lesson said the players. So what should happen yesterday against West Ham? A comfortable 2-0 lead with 16 minute left and one poorly dealt with free kick and one silly challenge in the box later and they find themselves going back to north London with one point instead of three.

The free kick for West Ham’s first was soft but Mannone made the cardinal sin of palming the ball back into the danger area instead of out wide. Cole pokes it home, game on. Then with ten minutes to go Alex Song decides to clip the back of Cole’s heels in the box with no real danger. Cole went down, penalty given, penalty scored. Wenger was rightly furious with his team after the game and it is these kind of games which results in Arsenal not properly challenging for titles. For 75 minutes Arsenal dominated but once again couldn’t close it out. They won’t win anything until they learn how to.

They just never learn...

.

3. Man City ensured Arsenal weren’t the only title pretenders to blow a two goal lead. Mark Hughes will be concerned at how his £24m centre back Joleon Lescott is a bit rubbish at the moment – Man City have a definite vulnerability in the air. Their form isn’t particularly good either with three successive draws and one win in five.

.

4. Spurs surprisingly lost to Stoke at home and it was particularly annoying for me as I had Abdoulaye Faye’s nine fantasy football points marooned on the bench (I didn’t think Stoke would do anything). My point is that given Spurs have lost just twice at home since Redknapp took over and Stoke were winless away in their first four games, it shows just how good (and unexpected and fortuitous) a result it was for Pulis’ team. I certainly wasn’t expecting it and it confirms Stoke should be pushing for a top half finish this season.

.

5. Congrats to Bobby Zamora, who I don’t think anyone will beat for miss of the season award. Wow. I know there are strikers who are lauded for their hard work rather than goals (see Heskey, Emile Ivanhoe) but that was ridiculous. To be fair he has already equalled his goal tally for last season but I reckon it’s a long time since the chant “When the balls hits the goal, it’s not Shearer or Cole it’s Zamora” was heard (not least because Shearer and Cole are retired but you know what I mean). Isn’t it now “When the ball hits your head and you’re sat in row Z, that’s Zamora”?

.

6. Chelsea gave Blackburn a spanking and from a fantasy perspective it was good to see Frank Lampard return to goalscoring form with a double. I picked him as captain so was pleased with the 28 points he scored. It’s a little early to say for sure but based on that game it appeared that the return of Joe Cole helped as it allowed Lampard to play deeper and make his undetected runs.

Cole himself was excellent too and should stay in the hole behind Drogba and Anelka rather than on the left. He’s not quite at full fitness yet but I reckon Deco should be fearing for his place. I agree with what the Football Guy says – Paul Robinson is just shocking on long shots. I know he’s fat but it be that hard to shift all that body mass. On second thoughts…

Try as he might, Paul 'the beached whale' Robinson just couldn't shift himself to save the shot...
