Zach Sobiech, 18, passed away this morning, surrounded by family and friends.

In the past few weeks, donations to Zach’s cause — the Children’s Cancer Research Fund — skyrocketed, as did downloads of his song, “Clouds,” which has more than 2.9 million page views on YouTube.

We are all shining stars in this world.  Sometimes we don’t realize the impact we can make if we just let go and embrace who we are!  Being a conduit of love, happiness and peace ~ sharing of ourselves ~ multiplies this gift to infinity and beyond.  Last night I read about the passing of Zach and found the video below about him.  If you have a few minutes, be inspired by his life and the way he spent his last days.  Zach turned to music to remind his family of  how much he loved them!  Doesn’t it make you think about the legacy you leave behind?

I just read the Daily Prompt and the songs sung by the extraordinary young man above certainly are a bittersweet gift to all of the hearts that he touched during his lifetime, especially his family, friends and loved ones.  I am sure that hearing his voice and seeing his videos makes them nostalgic.  I know that for me, I have 2 voicemail messages on my answering machine from my Dad last year.  One is when he missed my son’s birthday.  He told him that he loved him.  The second message was for me because when Dad was in the hospital and I was helping him with his business at the time.  He told me that he appreciated what I was doing for him, he was proud of me and he loved me.  What a true treasure to keep!  It’s all I have…a bittersweet gift.  Big hugs to all of you today and everyday!  Keep shining! xo

For those who can take the emotional experience here is the link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NjKgV65fpo, this story is of Zach a normal kid and who has to face his own mortality when he is told that he only has months to live, at 17 he deals with the worst case scenario, and this story follows him and talks about how he has impacted on others’ lives. I won’t spoil the story so please watch the link above and hear it for yourself. I am writing about him because with all the bad that is in the press and all the wrong we see, it is hard to forget that there are some wonderful people out there, not just Zach and his amazing thirst for life and how he could affect so many lives, even when his own has ended, but the people that dedicated their lives to him; family, friends, girlfriend etc. Everyone who heard Zach’s story or had the pleasure to spend with him knew this, it goes to show when one person affects you like Zach did then it encourages you to go and try and impact the lives of others too.

So if you are having a bad day and don’t know how you can go on, just think of Zach and how he made all bad days look easy and how he got the energy to change the lives of anyone who just heard him sing or talk, and that when you care for someone the good in humanity just flows, I’ve seen this from his family in what they did for him, his girlfriend, his friends, the Minnesota Vikings (I’m guessing his local professional team, or his favourite), and the celebrities that came together and shared his song “Clouds”.

Please share this, and try to get it out there, I’m hoping that in some way it can help Zach’s family through this hard time to know how far his message has spread and how many actually were affected by him. So please let them know that Zach lives on in everyone who is abiding by his message.

My family and I moved out to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in 1998 when I was six years old. I spent eight precious years of my life living there and growing into my teen years. My parents had me watch the musical video cassette before the move. I had honestly thought OK would be like the old west with saloons and cowboys. Don’t you just love little kid logic?

On May 3rd, 1999, a huge tornado wrecked the suburbs of Oklahoma City that I lived in. I can still remember hiding in the spare bathroom with my little brother wearing bike helmets and hiding under a mattress while a combination of strong winds and tornado sirens rattled my house. Tornados are so unpredictable, even a small one can be devastating.

The sky would sometimes turn bright yellow before a tornado, Out of nowhere, light would filter in through the windows as yellow as a lemon drop. Sometimes there would be daunting wall clouds (such as the picture posted above.) It was hauntingly beautiful and equally as scary. The aftermath was devastating. Not only are lives lost, but twisters leave such destruction in it’s wake. Cars and buildings crumpled and tossed miles away from where they were before, one house would be completely gone and the neighbors wouldn’t have any structural damage at all. Looks like Mother Nature is pissed.

This wasn’t exactly on my agenda of what I wanted to post about, however I still think of Oklahoma as my home. My heart, thoughts, and prayers go out to everyone affected. The images of this disaster bring me so much heartache for the victims and their families. Godspeed Moore, OK. <3

I was 19 years old, living with my best friend in an extremely dirty 2 bedroom apartment. My friend had a girlfriend who loved old music. She obsessed over The Beatles, Bob Marley and The Doors. I’ll admit, I didn’t like her. My opinion changed over time but at that particular place in my life she was the devil.

It was a warm and sunny Saturday morning, around 8am and my hazy, hungover head was jerked away by a noise from hell. A screeching, rolling, endless cacophony that drilled into my brain and physically caused me pain. I jumped out of bed and stormed out to the lounge ready to go ballistic.

My friend and his girlfriend were sitting on the couch watching a video. It was a live concert of The Doors. The noise was the organ solo in Light My Fire.

I knew of The Doors, of course. My older sister had gone through a Jim Morrison loving stage and I’d even picked up one of Morrison’s poetry books and read through it, but I hadn’t invested any time in listening to the music of The Doors.

Up until that point I had only ever heard the shortened version of Light My Fire, most likely on the oldies radio stations my parents preferred. This blistering organ solo was completely new territory for me. I did not understand it.

In hindsight it was the fuzzy state of mind I was in that turned me off the rock organ stylings of Mr Ray Manzarek. In the days and months to come I slowly came around to him. I avoided Light My Fire the morning after big nights out (and still do to this day), but I really got into songs like L.A. Woman, Riders on the Storm and Break on Through. Eventually it dawned on me that I was listening to musical genius.

To this day The Doors to me are not Jim Morrison. He was a circus sideshow for the musical genius that was Ray Manzarek, Robby Krieger and John Densmore. It’s the long blues and jazz fueled jams that eventually drew me in and the key to those jams was the keyboard playing of Manzarek.

Manzarek was also involved with Echo & The Bunnymen, who I love, and X, who I respect but don’t love.

I’m disappointed I never got to see him play live. He toured Australia not so long ago with the remnants of The Doors and Ian Astbury of The Cult fame on vocals. That would have been amazing, but I missed it.

RIP Ray Manzarek, I’ll have a glass or two of red wine tonight in memoriam, and tomorrow morning I will avoid this song at all costs.

The Doors founding keyboardist, Ray Manzarek died earlier today in Germany at the age of 74. Ray had been suffering from bile duct cancer and at the request of his family, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the www.standup2cancer.org foundation. Ray was not only the iconic keyboardist of one of the most controversial rock bands of the 1960′s but he went on to achieve best selling author status as well as becoming Grammy nominated in his own right.  In 2002, Ray set out with Doors’ guitarist Robby Krieger.

“I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of my friend and bandmate Ray Manzarek today,” said Krieger. “I’m just glad to have been able to have played Doors songs with him for the last decade. Ray was a huge part of my life and I will always miss him.”

We will all miss the great Ray Manzarek. Tonight put on your favorite Doors albums and let’s all toast to the great RayManzarek!

Yet another sad passing to report. News today of the passing of Doors co-founder and author Ray Manzarek at 74 from a long bout with Cancer in Germany took a lot of people by surprise, me included. Despite reports coming in confirming his death, there were also reports coming in that Manzarek’s death was a hoax. And I would have been happy to know if it was – there would be no need to post this tribute tonight.

But with more confirmations than denials, the hoaxes turned out to be hoaxes and the sad fact remains the same; Ray Manzarek is no longer with us, at least in the physical.

So as way of tribute, not only to the memory of that remarkably gifted musician and personable human being we had with us for that, in retrospect, short period of time, here is a live session along with an interview both with Manzarek and Jim Morrison for the NET program Critique with Richard Goldstein. It was broadcast on April 29, 1969 over WNET in New York.

We still have the music. We will always have the music.

He passed away earlier today at age 74 from bile duct cancer. As Jim Morrison passed away before I was born, I never got to see The Doors live. I did get to see Robby Krieger play a couple of solo shows in the 90′s. On December 14, 2011 I attended the Ray Manzarek/Robby Krieger show at the House of Blues Dallas. While their age definitely showed, it was such a fun show. While John Densmore declined to continue touring, Manzarek & Krieger kept the spirit of The Doors alive. RIP, Ray.
