El grupo californiano The Offspring actuará el 10 de agosto en Barcelona, en la sala Razzmatazz. La banda tan sólo ofrecerá un concierto en nuestro país como presentación de su último disco “Rise and fall, Rage and Grace”, publicado el año pasado.

Después de un largo silencio, The Offspring vuelve por sus fueros con este nuevo disco, repleto de canciones de punk rock alegre y vitaminado. Las entradas para el concierto de Barcelona salen hoy 8 de junio a la venta, tal y como ha informado su promotora Live Nation.

Whaddaya know, I think I like the Offspring.

I wrote them off before probably because I bought way too far into the idea that pop punk (with the exception of Green Day and Screeching Weasel) was terrible.  In retrospect it was a stupid and snobby thing to do.  Just because I adore Bad Religion doesn’t mean I can’t also bounce around to Bowling for Soup.

The other day I was listening to Pandora when “Why Don’t You Get a Job?” popped up.  Busy doing something else, I didn’t bother with my usual reflexive click of the “next” button as soon as I saw the word Offspring.  I was surprised to find I actually liked it.  So I wandered over to Youtube and gave them another chance.

They aren’t exactly earth-shattering, but you could do a lot worse.  Dexter Holland’s yelp gets more endearing with every listen, and they’ve mastered the art of crunchy, aggressive guitar.  In fact they’ve evolved so much that “Pretty Fly (for a white guy)” and “You’re Gonna Go Far, Kid” don’t sound like they came from the same band at all.

Still, looking at their new album I was skeptical.  The title “Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace” sounded awfully high-minded, and I was scared that they might have pulled a U2.  (Become self-indulgent and smugly righteous).

Make that twice I’ve misjudged the Offspring.  Rise and Fall… is definitely more melodic than some of their earlier music, but it still has plenty of urgent crunch.  They haven’t lost their edge, they’ve just honed it a bit differently.

A lot of punk bands eventually leave their raw aggression aside in favor of melody and anthemic guitar. It’s discouraging, because if it continues there might not be any hardfastrules bands left.  The world would be a sad place without at least someone whaling on a guitar and spitting vitriol.  But I don’t think that spirit will ever really die, and it’s not up to the Offspring (or anyone else) to drag it on if they don’t want to.  I’d rather they explored different creative styles than simply rehashed their old formula again.

All of this is a long way to say that it’s easy to misjudge pop punk.  It’s easy to write it off as overproduced hook-laden radio junk.  Some of it certainly is.  But just because some other songs share those attributes doesn’t mean they’re worthless, too.  In some cases, a more prevalent melody and complicated guitar aren’t record label tricks, they’re signs of true songwriting ability.  I need to learn to be more receptive to that.  Otherwise I’ll miss out on great music.

So I admit it.  I like the Offspring.  Come on, I dare you to tell me there’s something wrong with that.

Antes de nada, permitidme otra historieta de las mías.  A pesar de reconocer que estoy a años luz de ser un crítico, ni bueno ni malo, a base de escribir reseñas de vez en cuando ya tendría que haber aprendido algunas lecciones, o al menos la más importante, y si leyera esto el señor Revollo seguramente estaría de acuerdo: La figura del crítico sirve para ayudar y guiar al lector valiéndose de sus conocimientos y criterio, nunca para imponer. Creo que esto último aún no lo he hecho, sin embargo sí me he dejado engatusar como un inocente colegial por ellos, los críticos. Quiero decir que desde el pasado verano he leído unas cuantas críticas sobre Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace, y en la mayoría el octavo álbum de The Offspring no salía muy bien parado. Por este motivo he tratado de pasar olímpicamente del tema, como si no existiera, hasta que he reflexionado y he entendido que opinar es gratis, y que lo que a unos les puede parecer blanco, a otros, negro, y viceversa. Así que me he aplicado el cuento, y como “rectificar es de sabios” y “más vale tarde que nunca”, o al menos eso dicen, he escuchado tranquilamente el citado disco de principio a fin, y aquí tenéis mi reseña, crítica o como prefiráis llamarla. Por cierto, en ella estrenamos puntuación.

Una vez terminada la introducción, abrid bien los ojos porque vamos con la historia, no la mía, sino la del álbum. Publicado en todo el mundo a lo largo del mes de junio, su proceso de creación y grabación ha sido el más largo en la carrera de Dexter Holland y sus chicos, dos años, lo cual explica hasta cierto punto el paréntesis de más de cuatro entre Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace y su antecesor, Splinter (2003). En tanto tiempo pueden ocurrir muchas cosas, por ejemplo perder algún miembro del grupo, como ocurrió con el batería Atom Willard, quien abandonó la formación en 2007. Pero el mayor riesgo es el de perder la conexión con los seguidores, ya sea por apostar por un nuevo estilo, por un cambio de tiempos en la industria discográfica o cien cosas más, vete tú a saber. No obstante, The Offspring han salvado bien estos peligros, aunque muchos críticos digan lo contrario y les acusen de falta de madurez. ¿De qué madurez hablan? Una banda reconocida con una base sólida de incondicionales y una carrera dilatada no necesita madurar, ¿qué entienen por madurar?, ¿cambiar? ¿Por qué cambiar algo si funciona? Por nada, porque a algunos les encanta hablar por hablar y escribir por escribir, y si no revientan. Si el disco suena a The Offspring, y además lo hace bien, es suficiente, se trata de un buen disco y no es necesario compararlo con los de otras bandas, como hacen por ahí, que si Green Day… Pero al césar lo que es del césar, y pese a no coincidir en algunos aspectos, en otros tengo que dar la razón a los críticos. Porque al disco le falta un hervor, si me permitís el símil culinario.

El comienzo es sencillamente brillante, con tres grandes canciones como son Half-Truism, Trust in You y You Are Gonna Go Far, Kid, el segundo single del trabajo. A continuación nos encontramos con Hammerhead, de una calidad insuficiente como para haber sido elegida primer sencillo, bajo mi punto de vista, pero aceptable. Y después el nivel desciende más que las líneas en los gráficos de la crisis financiera mundial. A Lot Like Me recuerda demasiado a lo más mediocre entre lo último de Linkin Park, por no hablar de Kristy, Are you Doing Okay?, un “descarte” del American Idiot de los más arriba mencionados Green Day, o Fix You, inclasificable sin más.

Entre medias hay temas “a primer oído” más flojos que los que abren el listado, pero 100% The Offspring al fin al cabo, y por ello muy recomendables, como Take Me Nowhere, Nothingtown o la alocada Stuff is Messed Up,  Cierra el disco con Let’s Hear it for Rock Bottom, un par de escalones por debajo de las anteriores, y con Rise and Fall, algo mejor y con buenos riffs. En resumen, un buen disco para los melómanos en general, entretenido y ameno, y para los seguidores de la banda en particular. En cuanto a la puntuación, le doy un bien alto, seis y medio sobre diez: ♣♣♣♣♣♣

Salve raga!!!qui sotto vi riporto altre due canzoni dell’ultimo album degli OFFSPRING, Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace. Come avevo già scritto precedentemente nell’altro post, questo album mi ha un po’ deluso perchè viste le premesse mi aspettavo qualcosa di più punk-rock, qualcosa di più energico, però a parte tre canzoni il resto è molto pop. In assoluto il punk-rock rimane il mio genere musicale preferito,  quello che più ho amato e apprezzato nel corso degli anni e in particolare quello prodotto dagli Offspring. Però come purtroppo accade in numerose band, col passare degli anni, i musicisti diventano più “anziani” quindi cambiano man mano le aspirazioni musicali e si tende sempre più a modificare la propria produzione in qualcosa di più commerciale. Comunque appena verranno in Italia farò di tutto per esserci, perchè cmq per me rappresentano qualcosa di importante, e spero che lì mi regalino quelle emozioni che la loro musica mi ha sempre dato!!! Cmq di questo loro ultimo lavoro ho apprezzato solo 3 canzoni: Hammerhead, (che vi ho proposto nel precedente post), Half-Truism e Trust in you (che vi propongo qui sotto). Come al solito fatemi sapere le vostre opinioni in merito. Alla prossima!!!! W il punk-rock!!!!!!!

The Offspring se agtste album, Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace, is vandag (16 Junie) landswyd beskikbaar in Suid-Afrikaanse musiekwinkels – soos oudergewoonte met kritiese, weldeurdagte lirieke. In “Hammerhead” is ‘n spreker byvoorbeeld aan die woord wat eers ‘n soldaat blyk te wees wat veg vir volk en vaderland, tot die einde van die lied aantoon hoe hy in werklikheid ‘n leerlingskieter is. “Hammerhead” integreer ‘n fragment van Psalm 23 toepaslik om ‘n uiters ironiese nadraai aan die liriek te verleen.

Afrikaanse rockers kan baie leer by hierdie ouens – hulle is al vir 24 jaar aan die gang en bly steeds sosiaal relevant (jy kan immers net soveel keer sing oor hoe die middelklas jou bedrieg het voor jy afgesaag raak).

In the 90s a lot of my friends and I were Offspring fans. We enjoyed the fast and frantic energy combined with witty and humorous lyrics. It was a feel that very few other bands were capable of doing. They took aspects of Punk and made it easily digestible for those of us not ready for the hardcore punk scene. As the band got older the music mellowed slightly, much to the dissatisfaction of many fans. The overexposure was also beginning to kill it for me. I think it was after the 5,000,000th time I played Crazy Taxi that I decided I needed a break from them. As a result, their 2003 album Splinter did not cross my ears at all. After hearing about the lukewarm reception that album received I had to wonder if The Offspring had finally hit the breaks and decided that they had to get away because of low self esteem.

Enter “Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace”, a title that is an accurate description for the music contained within. These last few years have been agonizing for Offspring fans, with lead Dexter Holland tossing this album around for two years before finally deciding it was done. As a result, the album feels kind of like “Offspring Concentrate – Just add water!” The production is thick and warm, and has that familiar Offspring sound fans know and love. As the title suggests, there are ups and downs in this album and I don’t mean Ups being good songs and Downs being shitty ones. I mean that there are slower Offspring style ballads as well as the usual speed punk anthems. For example, my favorite track from the album “Stuff is Messed Up” feels like it came straight from the early 90s Offspring albums, speedy and full of dark humor. This track is followed by “Fix You” which is much, much slower and for some the difference may give you whiplash as the track comes to a complete stop.

But again, this is not a bad thing. The music is well written and the lyrics are still your typical Offspring affair. What it all comes down to is your preference. Would you like some diversity in your Offspring tempos? If so, “R&F, R&G” is an outstanding album for Offspring fans. Even fans stuck in the 90s era should give this album a shot, you may find that you like it. “Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace” is due to hit shelves on June 16th, and it was recently announced that the first single from the album “Hammerhead” will be released for the popular video game Rock Band next week as a downloadable track for Xbox 360 and PS3 users.

No, no te preocupes, no te voy a hablar sobre uno de esos submarinos del tío Sam—al menos de momento—, sino de lo último de The Offspring. Los californianos ponen punto y final a cinco años de silencio con un disco que verá la luz el próximo mes de junio. El primer sencillo de este Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace será Hammerhead, tema que como últimamente es habitual en esto de la música, ya puede ser descargado de forma legal y gratuita desde la red. Sin embargo  sus seguidores, o al menos unos cuantos, ya lo habrían escuchado antes, porque en 2007 la banda lo tocó en directo en el festival Summer Sonic. Para terminar, vamos a cerrar el ciclo de forma que esto nos quede redondo. Comenzamos hablando de armamento, y finalizamos con más violencia, en este caso escolar, ya que según el vocalista Dexter Holland de eso mismo trata la canción.
