They just finished a full US tour and a European stint with Iron Age. New album out now. Rise And Fall play this Thursday at the YAC.

2009 has been a really good year for decent hardcore and punk releases, I thought 2008 was good, but looking back it could well be topped by 2009 considering the way that the releases have gotten stronger as the years gone on.  Here is my (heavily Deathwish Records influenced) Top 10.

1. Converge – Axe to Fall

When I heard the first track Dark Horse tear from the speakers at breakneck speed, I knew, just knew, that this was going to be it. What can be said about this that hasn’t been said already by other people who’d say it better than me anyway? It’s Converge for fucks sake.

2. Rise and Fall – Our Circle is Vicious

Whereas Converge pummel you with speed and ferocity, Rise and Fall stalk you with violent intent. This album ebbs and flows with bitterness and hatred simmering under the surface. The songs off this sound fucking great live too, with In Circles being one of the best songs they’ve ever done.

3. Reign Supreme – Testing the Limits of Infinite

Thank god Jay Pepito left Blacklisted; as it’s given us two bands instead of one and if this first full length is anything to go by, 2 bands that can take their places in the upper echelon of modern hardcore. Melodic metallic hardcore, if that makes any kind of sense. Whatever, it’s fucking brilliant.

4. Blacklisted – No-one deserves to be here more than me

A very, very late entry. Only released on 12″ LP with no preorders, still us people without record players found it uploaded soon enough. Hardcore that has instrumental interludes sitting alongside the usual big, clean riffs which also sit alongside songs with simple guitar lines. An album that pulls its influences from everywhere and a truly forward thinking hardcore band.

5. Defeater – Lost Ground

Stunning 6 track mini concept album which tells the story of  a man returning from war and adjusting to life in the US who was first introduced on a track on their last album Travels. Heavy with lyrical images, anyone who was into Modern Life is War should be into this band too, as they’re another band who break the hardcore mould.

6. Hopeless – Dear World

Australian melodic hardcore. A great debut full length.

7. P.O.S. – Never Better

Socially conscious hip-hop with a punk influence running through it.

8. Alexisonfire – Old Crows/Young Cardinals

Everyone needs some Canadian punk rock in their lives. One of the best live bands around.

9. Death Before Dishonor – Better Ways to Die

NYC influenced Boston hardcore, Sick of it All style. I am moshing.

10. Narrows – New Distances

Experimental sludge metal/hardcore with the voice of Botch, Dave Verellen.

Other stuff that didn’t make the list but that I also loved this year: Dead Swans – Sleepwalkers, Ruiner – Hell is Empty, Phantoms – Demo ‘09, Architects – Hollow Crown, Gallows – Grey Britain, Paint it Black – Amnesia & Surrender EPs,  Blkout! – Total Depravity, Brides – Occular/Unveil, Break Even – The Bright Side.

There’s also loads of other stuff that I’ve just not got around to listening to for whatever reason. Time & especially money have been tight this year so hopefully I’ll get around to giving some other stuff a go in the New Year. Everything that I’ve downloaded I’ve tried to buy a physical copy or at least support the band at a show. All in all, not a bad haul of tunes.

Music has been my friend on the lonely periods between school, work and home.
Due to that, I felt like I needed to get back on the playlist posts, to try, in my own dysfunctional way, to pay homage to some of my biggest “friends” for the past few weeks.

The Beatnuts - The Originators - Great beats and consistent MC’s. One of the few albums released after 2000 that feels like that early 90’s hip-hop.

Mos Def - Black on Both Sides - Maybe his best record, I haven’t quite explored his music enough to the point of coming to that conclusion, but I can say this album has some of my favorite Mos tracks and lyrics, and the beats really make a difference.

Outkast – Aquemini - Underrated album. Here you find some of the best lyrics Outkast ever wrote as a group. You find a shared flow and a common concept in all the beats…don’t get fooled by the stuff that’s on MTV nowadays, this is the truly southern hip-hop.

Rise And Fall - Our Circle is Vicious - When I started listening to this one, I didn’t know if either I hated or loved it. Now, I know I love it. But not as much as the previous releases.

Also, on my occasional joggin runs, I’ve been doing this thing of choosing one album per run. So far I have come with this selection:

Clipse – Hell Hath No Fury - this records is on its way of becoming one of my favorite top 20 (more like 30 lol) records of all time. I find it the perfect soundtrack for almost everything I do, it sets me up in the right mood. The combination between The Neptunes beats and the bragging voices of the Thornton brothers produced one of the most efficient rap albums ever, from the first track to the last one you get nothing but quality.

Beastie Boys – Ill Communication – My favorite record from Beastie Boys. And I also discovered this is almost perfect for a run, the songs have a consistent flow, creative beats (and riffs) and the 3 MC’s deliver funky raw rhymes that. find almost no match on the other albums. It really is a good album to run to.

Rise And Fall play the YAC on Thursday December 17th. The 4 piece from Gent, Belgium just released a new album “Our Circle Is Vicious” on Deathwish Records. Rise and Fall last night in London were immense. They get better and better each time I see them and the new songs from Our Circle is Vicious slot in perfectly  alongside the stuff from Into Oblivion and In Circles is one of the best songs they’ve ever done. Bjorn reckoned they’ll be back early next year so that’s another sure thing to hit up, I think they’re coming back with TUI and hopefully with more Deathwish bands too ( BlackListed please?). Really gutted they’re straight out to Aus to tour w/Hopeless and possibly Carpathian as that’d be a bill I’d kill for over here in the UK.

Also this week aaw the best film of the year  – District 13 Ultimatum. An amazing French-language film set in a dystopian future in Paris where parts of the city are walled off, kind of like Escape from New York, but filled with insane parkour stunts and kung-fu action from David Belle and Cyril Raffelli all guided by the hand of Luc Besson. Go get it and the original District 13 if you haven’t already.

J’ai réalisé cette interview avec l’aide de mon ami Bastien en août 2009 pour le site skartnak.com. Rise and Fall étant parmi nos groupes préférés, on a eu envie de poser à Björn une petite série de questions, ce à la veille de la sortie de “Our Circle is vicious”, le nouvel album du quartet belge.

Salut Björn ! Comment vas-tu ? Peux-tu s’il te plaît présenter brièvement ton groupe Rise and Fall ? Quand avez-vous commencé ? Qu’avez-vous accompli jusqu’à maintenant avec le groupe durant toutes ces années ?
Tout va bien ! C’est dimanche, je prends du bon temps. Ça fait plus de six ans que Rise and Fall existe maintenant. Nous avons fait notre premier concert en mars 2003. Nous avons sorti une démo, quelques EPs et deux albums (« Hellmouth » et « Into Oblivion »). En mars de cette année, nous avons enregistré notre troisième album, « Our Circle is Vicious », à Salem, dans le Massachussets, et il devrait sortir en octobre sur Deathwish Inc. À côté de ça, nous avons fait des tonnes de concerts et nous avons beaucoup tourné également. Notre toute première tournée a duré dix jours, c’était pendant l’été 2004. J’ai booké cette tournée moi-même. Notre dernière tournée en date a duré quatre semaines, nous avons traversé l’Europe avec nos potes de Have Heart et Shipwreck.

Vous venez de Belgique, un pays qui est divisé en deux communautés bien distinctes. Corrige-moi si je me trompe, mais je crois qu’il y a des gens des deux parties du pays dans le groupe, juste ? Le prenez-vous comme un avantage ? Est-ce que cela joue un rôle majeur au sein du groupe ?
Et sur une échelle plus large, que penses-tu des barrières culturelles et de langues auxquels certains pays, comme le tien et le mien, doivent faire face ? Est-ce une bonne ou une mauvaise chose ?
En fait, il y avait des gens des deux parties du pays dans le groupe, plus maintenant. Notre ancien batteur, JP, vient de la partie francophone de la Belgique. Cela dit, il ne fait plus parti du groupe maintenant, mais il parlait très bien le flamand et la différence au niveau de la langue maternelle et de la culture n’a jamais posé de problèmes entre nous. La Belgique est en endroit un peu fou, c’est super petit, pourtant ça reste divisé en trois parties, et chaque partie a sa propre langue…La partie flamande, où nous vivons, la partie francophone, au sud, et la minuscule partie germanophone, à l’est. Je pense vraiment que c’est fascinant et que ça fait de nous un pays intéressant dans son ensemble. Je ne suis pas du genre à agiter le drapeau belge et à implorer pour que le pays en reste qu’un seul à tout prix, mais je ne suis pas non plus en faveur d’une division en deux ou trois parties. Si tu veux mon avis, les différences de langues et de backgrounds culturels rendent ce monde plus intéressant, je détesterais voir que tout le monde parle la même langue, fasse son shopping dans les mêmes magasins, achète les mêmes habits, etc. Ça me semblerait ennuyeux.

En tant que groupe, est-ce que vos ambitions ont changé avec le temps ? Je veux dire, à l’époque où vous avez commencé à jouer ensemble, étais-tu capable de t’imaginer chanter dans un des groupes les plus respectés de la scène européenne et, par exemple, faire des tournées avec des groupes énormes tels que Converge ? Pensais-tu arriver aussi loin avec groupe ?
Ouais, nos buts et nos ambitions ont vraiment changé avec le temps. Au début, le groupe était vraiment juste un projet entre amis. Tout ce que nous voulions, c’était enregistrer une démo, même avec un son médiocre, et faire quelques concerts. Sans vraiment connaître la raison, les choses deviennent incontrôlables et évoluent, nous avons subi quelques changements de line-up à travers toutes ces années, et nous avons fini par faire beaucoup de choses qui me semblaient totalement hors de portée pour le groupe. Nous sommes vraiment reconnaissants des chances qui nous ont été données, mais aussi d’avoir pu nous lier d’amitié avec tous ces gens rencontrés, avec lesquels nous avons pu passer du temps, comme Converge par exemple.

Avez-vous déjà dû faire face à de gros problèmes sur les tournées ? Si oui, quels étaient ces problèmes ? Ont-ils été faciles à résoudre ?
Oh bien sûr ! Les pires problèmes, en général, ne sont pas des pneus qui éclatent, des accidents de van, ou d’entrer dans un pays ou un autre. Les pires problèmes sont quand les choses se passent mal au sein du groupe, quand les membres se disputent ou entrent en confrontation. Je ne veux pas trop développer sur le sujet, mais à mes yeux, les pires moments à passer dans un groupe sont quand ce genre de situations surgit. Et les problèmes de ce genre ne sont jamais faciles à résoudre, vraiment.

Quel est le concert le plus fou que vous ayez joué ?
C’est toujours assez difficile pour moi de répondre à cette question, parce que nous avons fait tellement de concerts, et un bon nombre d’entre eux sont mémorables pour diverses raisons. Ce n’est pas que chaque concert que nous faisons ressemble à un champ de bataille avec des kids qui volent de tous les côtés et des centaines de gens qui font des singalongs, nous ne sommes pas Converge, ni Ceremony, ni Terror. Mais quand même, en termes de réponse du public, quelques-uns des shows les plus fous doivent être le Maximum Destruction Fest à Essen, en Allemagne, en octobre 2006, et le Moshvalley Fest en Belgique, en juillet 2009.

Maintenant que vous connaissez les deux scènes, soit la scène européenne et la scène américaine, pouvez-vous voir des différences majeures ? Pourrais-tu souligner, à ton avis, ce qui est différent et ce qui est similaire ? Comment comparerais-tu les deux scènes ?
Les deux scènes sont assez similaires, je pense. Le public américain a tendance à être un peu plus jeune et plus fou, le public européen semble être un peu plus mélangé et plus âgé en moyenne, ça dépend des concerts évidemment. Cependant, je ne pense pas qu’être dans le hardcore ici ou là-bas est vraiment différent. Les avantages que l’Europe a, c’est que nous avons plus de salles, de centres de jeunesse et d’endroits en général pour organiser des concerts, alors qu’en Amérique, les kids doivent beaucoup improviser, c’est pourquoi il y a beaucoup de shows dans des halls, dans des caves, et parfois dans un refuge. Cela dit, j’aime les deux continents. L’Europe est un peu plus familière et sûre, tu es nourri et tu es assuré d’avoir un endroit où dormir, l’Amérique, c’est plus l’aventure, tu ne sais jamais ce qui va se passer et ça te paraît incroyable quand tu as à manger à un concert. De la pizza en général. J’adore.

Vous ne faites pas ce qu’on pourrait appeler de la musique pro-chrétienne, que pensez-vous de la scène dite « Christiancore » ? Est-ce que ça t’a déjà causé des problèmes de crier « forked tongue » à la face d’un kid chrétien ?
J’ai toujours été assez hésitant sur ce sujet. Je pense que le hardcore est un endroit où les gens peuvent exprimer leurs points de vue et leurs croyances, en supposant que chaque auditeur est assez intelligent et mature pour se faire sa propre opinion quand même. S’il y a des groupes qui peuvent chanter à propos d’un style de vie sans drogue, de la Conscience Krishna, ou des droits des animaux, ou de la lutte urbaine, ou du communisme, alors pourquoi ne serait-il pas permis de chanter à propos de Jésus ? D’un autre côté, le fait que les groupes chrétiens sont gentiment mais sûrement en train de devenir un phénomène « normal » dans notre scène, me dérange, parce que bon nombre de ces groupes défendent des points de vue dont j’essayais de me détacher étant adolescent. Donc, je suis mitigé sur le sujet. Tu pourrais supposer que je m’oppose à cela, mais en même temps je ne pense pas que ces groupes ne devraient pas avoir l’autorisation de faire ce qu’ils font. En ce qui concerne « Forked Tongues », n’a absolument rien à voir avec la chrétienté ou avec la religion. Et à vrai dire, aucune de nos paroles n’est en rapport avec ces sujets, mis à part peut-être « Live in Sin ».

Vous semblez utiliser une imagerie très inspirée du satanisme, d’où cela vient et à quel point prenez-vous cela au sérieux ?
L’artwork complet de « Into Oblivion » a été fait par Jacob Bannon, je pense que ça reflète bien l’esprit de l’album. Personnellement, j’ai toujours pris cette imagerie religieuse comme une métaphore. La chrétienté pour moi reste une religion et un système de valeurs auxquels j’ai toujours été confrontés lorsque j’étais plus jeune, pas vraiment à cause de mes parents, mais plutôt à cause des écoles, des maîtres (d’école) et de certains proches, et je n’ai jamais été à l’aise et en accord avec ça. C’est une religion qui a eu une influence majeure sur le monde occidentale, d’une telle ampleur que nous ne le remarquons même plus je pense. Nous (le groupe) avons toujours eu une approche très « rentre-dedans », nous avons toujours voulu que les gens se demandent pourquoi ils font ce qu’ils font et pourquoi ils croient en ce qu’ils croient. Vivez votre propre vie, avec vos règles. Soyez de véritables individus. C’est ce genre de choses qu’on veut faire passer. Concernant le satanisme, évidemment aucun de nous n’est satanique, mais je sais que Cédric s’est beaucoup renseigné sur le sujet. Il est aussi connu pour se retirer de temps à autre dans une cave, afin d’écouter Pentagram 24 heures sur 24 et 7 jours sur 7, avant de ressortir des riffs plein la tête.

Beaucoup de gens dans le hardcore sont soûlés par la violence durant les shows. À mon avis, si tu joues de la musique violente, c’est se voiler la face d’imaginer que le public ne réponde pas de manière violente également… quel est ton avis sur la question ?
La violence durant les shows a toujours été un problème, du moins depuis que je suis dans le hardcore. Franchement, je ne vois pas le problème. Il y aura toujours les connards habituels, à chaque concert, qui vont délibérément tenter de blesser d’autres gens, mais je pense qu’en Europe, les shows ne sont pas si violents et dangereux que ça. Si le public est vraiment dans le show, et par ce biais, est capable de laisser sortir sa frustration et sa rage, alors je trouve que c’est cool.

Quelles sont vos relations avec votre label, Deathwish Records ? Vous avez déjà rencontré les gens du label ou vous restez en contact uniquement par mail ? Comment ça fonctionne ? Vous devez vous pointez à leur bureau de temps à autre ? Comment gèrent-t-ils leurs groupes ?
Oui bien sûr, on les a rencontrés et on les connaît bien, ça serait bizarre si ce n’était pas le cas. Donc basiquement, Deathwish est géré par Jacob Bannon et Tre McCarthy. On a rencontré Jake parce qu’on a joué et tourné avec Converge, en 2004 je crois. En 2006, ils ont décidé qu’ils aimaient suffisamment notre album « Into Oblivion » pour le sortir sur leur label. On a rencontré Tre un peu plus tard, quand on a tourné aux USA au printemps 2006. Et depuis, on n’a pas arrêté de travailler avec eux et ils sont vraiment géniaux, ils prennent vraiment soin des groupes qu’ils signent et seront prêts à beaucoup de sacrifices pour aider. À coté de Jake et de Tre, il y a toute une équipe dévouée, avec des gens comme Nicole, Dave, Andy etc.. Généralement, on va traîner au bureau Deathwish chaque fois qu’on passe par Boston. On y bouffe des donuts, on y écoute de la musique à fond, y a le chien de Tre… on prend du bon temps quoi.

À coté du groupe, es-tu impliqués dans d’autres projets liés au hardcore ou a l’art en général ? Gères-tu un label ou un zine ?
On a tous quelques trucs à côté du groupe pour nous tenir occupés, mais il est évident que RISE AND FALL nous prend la plupart de notre temps. Vince joue dans un autre groupe qui s’appelle Blind To Faith et qui comporte des membres de Reproach et Amen Ra. Leur album vient de sortir sur Holy Terror Records, allez écouter leur zic si vous êtes fans de headbanging et de punk-metal basique. Cédric jouait dans Rhythm to the Madness, il a co-écrit leur album « Weltschmerz ». Si vous n’avez pas entendu parler d’eux, vous manquez vraiment quelque chose. Moi j’ai un blog pour lequel j’interviewe des gens que j’apprécie et sinon j’écris sur des sujets divers et variés, ça s’appelle Mind Over Matter. Je crois que c’est tout.

Qu’est ce que tu n’oublies jamais de prendre avec toi quand vous partez en tournée ? Un Ipod ? Des livres ?
Je ne prends jamais mon Ipod parce qu’il est vieux et que la batterie ne tient que 3 heures ! Sinon je prends toujours quelques bouquins avec moi. Je prends aussi des chaussettes et des sous-vêtements propres !

Quel est le futur du hardcore ?

Tu sais, je me suis fait tatoué Rise and Fall sur mes avant-bras, en partie parce que je suis fan de ton groupe. Récemment je suis allé chez mon docteur et quand il a vu mon tatouage, il s’est exclamé « oh Rise and Fall , c’est une version urbaine du yin et du yang ? » J’ai trouvé sa définition tout à fait appropriée et intéressante. Qu’en penses-tu ? Quelle serait ta définition à toi ?
Wow, j’aimerais bien le voir ton tattoo ! Ton docteur, c’est un mec intelligent. Ma définition s’attache à la relativité de tout, et à quel point ce que l’on a peut disparaître du jour au lendemain. Sinon le reste du temps, je pense juste au groupe Leeway, et à quel point ils sont géniaux ! (Note des interviewers : Rise and Fall est le titre de la première chanson de Leeway sur l’album « Born to Expire », sorti en 1989)

As I continue to reflect on the stunning animation by Valerio Berruti (since I am now writing a paper on it for my French Film and Narrative class), I cannot forget to comment on another one of my favorite pieces, a specific film called “Rise and Fall,” by the Dutch artist, Fiona Tan, at the Biennale Giardini. I watched this film twice because of its emotional complexity and its heartbreaking narrative. First of all, the cinematography was GORGEOUS. I really enjoyed all of her films, but this one stuck out to me…It was very quiet and serene, but as I watched, the tension in both women’s lives built up–It was the repetition of their actions, and their inexplicable isolation from the rest of the world that made the film so tragic. It was unclear whether or not the two women were supposed to be the same, but it was evident that the younger woman would eventually be following the same path as the older woman. We were not given much information about their personal lives, but by showing each woman repeating everyday actions, such as taking a bath, writing in a journal, and putting a scarf on as they leave the house, we begin to understand the patterns that control their lives. Footage of the Niagra Falls is also juxtaposed with the footage of the women–At first, the water is still, and then it becomes disturbed as the two women become more unsettled. The water keeps flowing forward, and likewise, their lives are both headed in the same direction. When the water finally spills over the falls, we feel the two women falling as well. During the long shot of the falls, I felt as if the world has collapsed. The viewers await the tragic end, but eventually, all is quiet again, and the mist settles. The women are still alone at the end of the film, and we understand that they will always be alone.

First off I would just like to talk about music and where it’s going. I had a chat with my brother and “The Kid” the other day and was asking them if they had money would they buy cds… nope. They could care less about having a cd or anything like that. It makes me feel like an old timer because I can’t wrap my hands around the idea of buying a data file. I know we are in different times now but man, I love owning vinyl, cd, dvds, whatever. I like the nostalgia and culture that comes with having a tangible object. Especially if I’m going to be paying the same price without getting the object. Maybe it’s a designer thing. The packaging, the artwork, etc. Anyway, I would like to thank Deathwish Inc. for continuing to sell vinyl. I would also like to thank them for hooking me up with the digital copy of Rise and Fall’s new album “Our Circle Is Vicious” as soon as I pre-ordered the vinyl. What a great company.

As I write this from my job (bored out of my mind) I’m trying to think about how to explain how I feel about “Our Circle Is Vicious.” It’s been a while since their last full length and their single “Clawing” left me wanting more for a long time. Rise and Fall are one of those bands that make me excited about hardcore and heavy music in general. It’s not just the music, it’s the imagery, the mood, the lyrics, the merchandise that make this band everything it is. A lot of bands have decent music and great artwork/merchandise or great music with garbage visual style. It’s hard to find a band that marries the music and culture so well. Anyway, the album is great. It’s exactly what I expected. It’s trippier than ever before and darker as well. The faster parts are louder and the vocals are more raw. I still have to listen to it a thousand more times to really appreciate it, but as of right now it has been worth the wait.

The first thoughts published on this blog were posted on 09/09/09. Though it was on a topic that many people would last think of as an opening to their blog (yeah, I know, research and blogging aren’t exactly the perfect mix), well, it was relayed to the world on what’s thought to be a significant date. A homophone of the word for “long-lasting,” the Chinese, among many other cultures, believe the number nine to bring good luck. It represents tolerance, understanding, and forgiving past injustices. And the day will only make a come back after 1,000 years.

Yesterday, we commemorated the anniversary of the 09/11 attacks.

On the day of the incident, New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani proclaimed, “We will rebuild. We’re going to come out of this stronger than before, politically stronger, economically stronger. The skyline will be made whole again.” And after eight years, 2752 lost lives, 3051 orphaned children, $23 billion to clean up and rebuild Ground Zero, and the entire globe affected by the economic repercussions of the fall of the twin towers of the World Trade Center, the United States and the rest of the world has recovered.

In the same way, this blogger was once in a devastated state—in between jobs with a dwindled savings account, struggled to get back in school, and lost a loved one.

But after the fall, one will rise stronger than before.

She is all set to start her training for a well-paying job. Her research is well on its way. She has zeroed in on a fully-furnished loft at a posh location. She is about to get her Honda XRM 125RS and Canon EOS Rebel T1i 15.1 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera. She is getting ready to pack her bags to Sentosa Island. And without any commitments in the iconic Cupid’s area, she is eager to enroll in the Wealth Academy. She has made plans to run 10 kilometers in the morning, swim 20 laps in the evening, go wall climbing on weekends, and maybe even dance salsa.

The ashes are gone and the phoenix has risen.

Just a short post to tell you all that you should probably buy this. I featured a Lonewolves in my first ‘zine, and they’ve played both of the house shows i have put on, going down a storm both times. This is their first proper release, and their first for TDON and it’s been some time in the making. I’ve had a digital copy of this EP for quite a while now, so i’ve listened to it quite a lot, and its awesome, without a doubt worth the wait. This was the first year I had been abroad to an out and out hardcore festival, and obviously also as a direct consequence of that fact, my first time at Fluff Fest. I was a little bit unsure of what to expect. We arrived there on Thursday in the sweltering heat, having had very little sleep the night before and flying and travelling for most of the day. After moaning about the temperature for a while we got set up for the weekend.  The camping facilities were pretty good, toilets were of festival standard i.e. not great, but there was a massive water tank near where we were camping, although that was virtual swampland by the Sunday.  Overall I must say that this was far better organised- or at least seemed to be from my experience, than many of the major festivals I have been to.  There were the odd queues for the food- which for vegan festival food was actually alright, but beyond that, it was more or less without hitches. In terms of who was there, there were a fair share of croosh kids getting their spin kicks out to xRepresentx and the like, a load of stinking crusties, and then the other kind of people that go to hardcore shows which fit into neither of those categories. Add in the odd middle aged pissed up Czech bloke who seems to have wandered in by mistake, fist pumping to some STRAIGHTEDGE rhetoric and it’s a confusing mix. Despite the relative diversity, I personally did not notice any conflict between patrons and generally there was a pleasant atmosphere. Generally I think tolerance was the order of the weekend, as even though views might differ inside- for every person enjoying the cheap beer there was a kid with an X on his hand- people seemed to realise that for the most part we were in this together, a hardcore festival existing with limited influence from the mainstream, as lame as that might be to read.

The odd bit of rubbish and people stealing from tents does fucking suck, but overall it was outweighed by the festival being a celebration of all things posi. People were whinging about chocolate, which was only vegetarian being sold, but that doesn’t really bother me. Oh and a couple of people also had a moan on the internet about ‘drunk dickheads’ as though the only problems were caused by drinkers, but they are twats, so it’s not all that important. I guess the overall point of this rambling and uninteresting introduction is the following- generally people there were nice, and there were a couple of dickheads.

Anyway, to the bands! Friday kicked off with Against Your Society, or AYS. To be honest it’s a solid but unspectacular start, based around modern sounding hardcore. It’s pretty good, and it holds my interest, taking inspiration, as many bands seem to do, from stuff like Have Heart and American Nightmare, with a little bit of Ceremony thrown in. They cover ‘Fix Me’ too which is always welcome.  It sets the scene pretty well for the rest of the day. Next on are The Effort. The description on the website says ‘like Verse’ which sums them up pretty well I think. Everything about this band has been done before from the sound to the earnest politics. That isn’t to say they are particularly bad, and the kids here seem to love them anyway, but to my mind it’s all a bit mediocre, and there isn’t an awful lot to get excited about. However, that is about to change as Senata Fox follow them. Hailing from Croatia they deal in the kind of hardcore I like… fast, short and loud. They must play about 25 songs today, each of them around the minute mark and are the first band I really fully enjoyed. The vocals are also pretty cool, abrasive, grinding and aggressive, coupled with straight up thrashcore riffs. I picked up a couple of their records which are also well worth checking out if you like powerviolence/grind/thrash influenced hardcore. Which you should. After that we rush over to the ‘Party tent’ to catch Sweden’s Dead Vows who also impressed me a lot. They have been compared quite frequently with Refused, including on the Fluff Fest website, and that’s not an unfair comparison as there’s obviously a good deal of influence stemming from them. (Quite how being compared to Refused could be unfair I don’t know, but whatever, they are good). Despite being stood right at the back of the tent, which somehow already smells like piss, mud, beer and b.o. or in other words, crust punk, this is really enjoyable, and they are worth checking out if you like hardcore with a touch of innovation. The guitarist also has a cool denim vest with a Slayer patch, which is always likely to win me over. After this we head back to catch most of Bora’s set, and I honestly can’t really remember that much about them. That’s probably not a good thing, but what I do remember indicates that they are better than my failure to remember them might suggest. I blame the beer and heat.

Senata Fox

Ghostlimb are next up, and whilst their pre set demeanour is rather friendly and jovial, it belies the utter anger they instil into their relatively brief set. Songs rarely breach a couple of minutes, and they are all fast, heavy, aggressive and loud. Awesome, they remind me a bit of bands like Coliseum and Trap Them, with hardcore and thrash roots underpinned by furious d-beat influences and Lightspeed drumming. A change of pace occurs as Outlast from Sweden (not to be confused with the US band) come onstage. In the place of the anger of Ghostlimb, Outlast revolve around an utter positivity, something that I can get behind just as much as being pissed off. Swedish legends, with roots in ‘classic’ hardcore, this is a fun and enjoyable set, and as good as their own songs are, it’s during the encore when they play so many amazing covers that this set is really cemented as one of the best of the day. Any band can win my heart by playing Gorilla Biscuits, Minor Threat, Suicidal Tendencies, 7 Seconds, Negative Approach covers, and when they do it this well its even more excellent. So much fun! Kingdom played next and they basically just sound like Hatebreed. So if that’s your thing then yeah, but it’s not really mine. The singer complimented my girlfriends outfit, and this coupled with sounding like the hardcore that my girlfriend used to love (and secretly still does) means they are best pals forever, but I’m not really into it. She does have a Wayne’s World cap on backwards though which is pretty cool. Every cloud… Analena don’t really do much for me either, they are screamo, which I like sometimes but this just aint done that well. I don’t really like the singer’s voice, and it sounds like a pretty bad pop band at times, then goes into a screamy part. Some of its quite good, but only about 30% of each song maybe and I don’t like those odds. Finally To Kill finished off the day, continuing the theme of not bothering me that much following the brilliance of the middle of the day. Either way they are alright, kids go crazy, and they are all about the xvx mosh. So yeah, if you like that sort of thing, you’ll be at home with To Kill. To be fair I do quite enjoy a few songs, but not much more than that.  Day one over, I’m pretty much dead on my feet. As much as karaoke sounds like a lot of fun from what I can hear of Belinda Carlisle, 8 hours of mediocre sleep in the tent is what I need, so I do that instead.

Outlast

The weather on Saturday morning was a little more comfortable; with the sun hiding behind clouds for most of the day, which helped keep temperatures down and stopped my tent from being totally unbearable when I woke up. Its back on the cheap but good beers again, which whilst being liquid actually serve to make me feel more dehydrated, but also more fun. Deal with that edge kids. First up on Saturday was Reconcile from Argentina, who whilst not really being all that good- they just are pretty average typical modern hardcore that I’m not all that huge on, win me over a bit with sheer enthusiasm. They look so pleased to be playing to this amount of people, many of them receptive, that you can’t help but wish them well. I’d say the same for XREPRESENTX if they weren’t the shittiest thing ever. The singer is a sleazy muscle-bound douche that pretty much sums up the word ‘jockcore’ and despite his endless ‘being straight edge is the best thing ever man’ and his numerous edge tattoos doesn’t come close to convincing me it is, let alone convincing himself. I give him about a year before he breaks and then the band splits up. Fair enough be straightedge or whatever if you want, but if you sing the words ‘if you break edge, I’ll break your face’ then there is no way that you are anything but a complete and utter twat. As Betercore put it, it is possible to be ‘sxe but not an asshole’, in fact some of my favourite people in the world are, but when twats like these ram shit down peoples throats, it gives what should be a positive lifestyle the complete wrong image. They actually, seriously, have a song called ‘Edge Break, Face Break’.  Honestly. It’d be funny if it wasn’t so crap. Unsurprisingly loads of people are the front go nuts for them, but I’ve come to expect that when a mediocre or even complete pile of shit band play anywhere. Ah well. The singer does manage to redeem the fact that he has a constant shit eating grin plastered on his stupid face by singing ‘Wayne’s World, Partytime, Excellent’ over a mosh part of one of their songs, but it’s a small mercy and despite something like that being totally awesome, when its been preceded by a mountain of crap its exactly that, a small mercy. I’ve been looking forward to that rant for a while, it was good to get it out of my system.

 Just as I was about to give up on ever listening to hardcore again the perfect antidote stepped onstage in the shape of Press Gang. These are fucking awesome and I think xJOCKCOREx only served to make them look better. They are from Germany and play a sloppy brand of hardcore/punk with garage overtones, something that is pretty much guaranteed to make me like a band. They remind me a bit of The Shitty Limits and have a German version of Jugs (if you are from Norwich you will get this reference) on bass. The singer seems pretty pissed and nearly breaks a microphone, all the while asking for beer in a wonderful contrast to the previous band, but most importantly, the music is actually great. I picked up a 7” of theirs which has a song on it called ‘Dishonour Before Death’, which I think sums them up quite nicely. Burial play next, with a brand of thrashy old school hardcore which also borrows from Japanese hardcore and throws a bit of crustiness in there for good measure. I actually was a little bit disappointed as I was expecting to absolutely love this band, and I ended up just thinking they were really quite good, and liking them quite a lot. That’s hardly damning criticism and I think if I check them out a bit further on record I might like them more, I think I just expected a bit much. The vocals seem a bit one paced too at times, although I’m just picking faults here; they are still well worth checking out. Wait in Vain don’t sound very good, and I don’t really like Trial or Champion so we went and got food during their set. Celeste were more up our alley, with the French four piece playing a atmospheric and doomy set of metal inspired hardcore. It did get a little bit samey after a while though, they seemed to lack a spark and a sense that they might just go off down an crazy and interesting route at any point, something that separates the best bands from the also rans. It was a little bit predictable by the 5^th drawn out repetitive song and whilst they certainly had a load of decent riffs, they seemed not to have an abundance of ideas beyond that. I still quite liked them though and I think they’ve got the potential to be amazing, they just aren’t there yet.

Zann are up next and they really impress me. Speaking to a lot of people they were frequently mentioned as one of the best bands of the weekend, and it’s not hard to see why. The singer also opens with a ‘that’s what she said’ joke, which ensures I am on his side for the rest of it. They play a sort of chaotic screamo, influenced by all the classic bands, but with a more manic edge, something I think works really well, especially live if this is anything to go by. At times they build their sound up into a wall of noise, only for it to shatter the next moment in cacophonic mayhem. After these and sort of following on well is Brighton’s Fall of Efrafa. They only play about 3 songs I think, but are on-stage for about 40 minutes which gives you an idea of how epic they are. They recall Post-Rock and stuff in the length of their songs and emphasis which is place on a steady build up, with a real sense of atmosphere and foreboding pinning together their set. They are all clearly excellent musicians and this reliance and emphasis on slow build ups, whilst almost frustrating, serves to make the points where they really go for it all the more exhilarating. Again they stake a claim for one of the best bands of the weekend… but for me there is really only one choice. Victims were fucking amazing. About 10 minutes into their set the heavens really open for the first time all day, which leaves me standing on my own in a field, soaking wet and shivering, but completely awestruck. It was an incredible moment, half for the sight of hundreds of hardcore kids running frantically for shelter, and half for watching the rest of the crowd jumping around and pumping their fists as the heavens opened. Victims sounded so powerful on stage and the setting and surroundings provide the perfect backdrop. They also incite the biggest circle pit I have ever seen, with everyone from the front of the stage to the sound booth about 50 yards or more back charging around the field. Whether it was the conditions or the fact that their crust influenced 100mph hardcore is just that good, these are hands down the best band all weekend. After such an incredible set it’s somewhat inevitable that any headliner is going to feel anti-climatic, but for the majority of people here that isn’t the case. Reason being, Trial are the headliners.  I quite enjoy them and can appreciate that they influenced a whole buttload of bands, but they aren’t really my thing again. It seems a theme of Fluff Fest; half of the bands I really like, the other half leave me a bit cold. But a 50% hit rate (it’s probably more like 60% anyway) is probably about 5 times better than most festivals, and this one cost £20, and with travel and a few days in Prague too, the same price as a ticket to Reading or something. SO I won’t complain as Fluff Fest is awesome. Back to Trial though, they probably get the most enthusiastic response of all the bands and I can imagine if you are into this era of hardcore, seeing them tonight would have been pretty brilliant. The politics and between song speeches are also pretty interesting, without being preachy like so many other bands that do it. Not a bad end to the day, but after Victims I was ready to go to bed happy.

I can’t remember what the weather on Sunday was like, so I’m gonna guess at alright. In fact I think it was a bit cloudy but didn’t rain, which was more or less perfect as it didn’t get too hot. One thing I made sure to do whilst I was at the festival was to drink loads of water as because after a few brewskis the sun really took it out of me. By Sunday I had it down to a fine art of maintaining just the right amount of alcohol in my blood. Anyway, for me a lot of the bands I really wanted to see played today, and Have Heart played too. Glasses played first, a German female fronted band who were pretty cool. Nothing too amazing, but modernish hardcore that doesn’t suck, with plenty of speed and aggression. Decent way to wake me up after sleeping in a tent for several nights. Daymares played next, and weren’t all that really. Pretty standard ‘crucial’ hardcore, but what I did like was the singer’s tendency to just ramble between each song. He kind of did the thing where a band shout for about 2 minutes about something, then explain the complex political message they are trying to convey, and everyone claps, and it’s all nice with everyone caring and stuff. But this guy sort of missed the bit where you are supposed to say something profound and instead talked about how he used to be angry, then realised it was better to not be angry sometimes. He was also about 7 foot tall. It was entertaining at least. June Paik played next, and were pretty cool, playing a chaotic, frenetic type of screamo. The singer at times looked a bit confused as though he didn’t realise he was in the band, but I’m fairly sure that wasn’t the case. They reminded me a bit of Orchid, so any opinions on them can probably be based around that comparison. As We Fight played next and seemed to me at least to be pretty out of place. They played generic crappy metalcore, with the standard set of moves to match, and despite their best efforts, shouting ‘circle pit!’ every 5 seconds doesn’t going to win over a crowd who aren’t really interested. Bands don’t really realise this though, I lose count of the times a band who are faced with an apathetic crowd think the best response to this is to just keep shouting at them to move, even when its clear from the outset they are fighting a losing battle. It just gets embarrassing. They also have dual vocals, and as far as I could see, both singers were really weird looking. I gave it a couple of songs and then went to get some food.

DING

Next up is Shipwreck AD who I saw with Have Heart last summer and wasn’t that bothered by. They are pretty competent, but not really my thing, but if this is your bag, please please please listen to Shipwreck over bands like xRepresentx. I did enjoy the guitarists wearing windbreakers and sunglasses and not moving for the entire set. That was pretty cool. Next up were Death is not Glamorous who, as European hardcore bands go, are probably one of the best known and best loved, and it’s easy to see why. This is a really energetic and even more fun set, which cranks right up the posi meter. My girlfriend gets in on the act, and it’s pretty hard to do anything other than smile for half an hour. They get a great reception too, appealing to the punks, the crucial kids, and everyone in between. Everyone loves a band that sound a bit like Lifetime clearly. I know I’ve been commenting on the appearance of most of the singers so far and I don’t want to appear as though I base my opinions on what they look like, but DING probably are responsible for my best comparison of the weekend. He looks like a rapper from a kids cartoon. I think this might be to do with the baseball cap and the fact that he isn’t very tall, but either way, I kept thinking it throughout the time I was watching them. An Albatross have quite an act to follow then, but they do so with utter ease. One of the bands I was looking forward to seeing the most, they justify exactly why, with a live show that contrasts wildly with most of the other bands that played the festival. The singer is shirtless in winklepickers and skinny jeans with long hair, climbs everything around the stage, finishing on a lorry at the side, and the rest of the band provide the frenzied rhythm to soundtrack this perfectly. This contrast with the rest of the festival actually plays to their advantage, you get the sense that they really don’t mind standing out, both for being fucking weird, but also for being utterly amazing. Their sound is captivating and hypnotic and they are without doubt one of the best bands of the weekend. The tempo doesn’t drop with the next band, Rise & Fall. These were another of the bands that I was really looking forward too, and they prove that they are head and shoulders above the majority of modern hardcore bands, standing alongside bands like Pulling Teeth and most of the Deathwish roster. Their influences are pretty plain for all to see, and whilst they don’t exactly tear up the metallic hardcore rulebook, they pretty much define what the rules should be. Crunchy, heavy riffs underpin their sound, which comes across really well live too. They play a couple of new songs too which sound really promising and a bit of a departure from the albums that made them a dominant force. They are back in the UK soon on a headline tour, which will be well worth going to.

Rise & Fall

Ratos De Porao continue the run of excellent bands, the Brazilians playing one of the most entertaining sets of the weekend, with their fast, straightforward hardcore/punk really shining live. I enjoy the singers bating of the straight edge kids specifically, but also pretty much everyone else watching and his on-stage theatrics. What he may lack in energy, urgency and movement; he makes up in how amusing he is to watch. They cover ‘Red Tape’ by Circle Jerks too, but their entire set is given a deserved great reception, with people charging around, one guy in nothing other than a jockstrap. It’s a pretty good indication of what their set was all about. Finally a slice of hardcore history (albeit not really on a par with early Bad Brains shows or something like that…) with Have Hearts LAST EVER European show. To be fair they are probably the biggest current hardcore band in the world and are clearly playing their hearts out, with kids going for it, even more on stage than for Trial, so much so that Pat has to ask people to get off, and its pretty emotional (on their part anyway). They do have some good songs and are good at what they do, but what they do isn’t really my cup of tea and never has been. Having said that I do enjoy their set, more so than the last time I saw them and hardcore music is poorer for not having a passionate, sincere and hardworking band around. And the ‘flex your muscles but not your fucking head’ line gets me every time. As the festival draws to a close with a mass singalong and stage invasion, all that’s left of the weekend is to party in the aptly named ‘party tent’ to loads of songs you only like on occasions like this. It’s basically a collection of stuff I don’t like from the 80’s which is a lot of fun to dance to. It’s surreal seeing a load of hardcore kids who had been moshing a few hours ago in a Stick to your guns t-shirt getting down to Dead or Alive, but I could have spent all night in there. So much fun and I think I laughed more in a couple of hours than I had in several months. A perfect end to a great weekend.

That’s about it really. Overall, I had an awesome time and I’m pretty sure I’ll be going back, even if I did have to go without a bacon sandwich for far too long. I will leave you with some of my highlights…

• A man who looked like he came directly from the 1980’s. An impressively elaborate mullet combined well with vintage wrestling t-shirts. A true hero.
• As I mentioned above, kids dancing to dead or alive in animal liberation and tragedy t shirts.
• Meeting cool people.
• Not being able to afford all the cool stuff people has in their distros, but picking up more records than I should have anyway.
• The worst band ever quoting both Will Ferrell and Wayne’s World.
• During the aforementioned rubbish bands set, seeing a pissed up bloke in a fishing hat and sandals who looked very much like he had just somehow stumbled into the festival site pumping his fists whilst he tried not to sway too much along with songs about edge pride or whatever they go on about.
• Senata Fox pissing themselves laughing at xRepresentx.
• A man (pictured above) looking like he had found god during An Albatross, in between swinging people around and rolling in the mud.
• The huge circle pit in the rain which turned the festival site into something from a medieval battle field for a few minutes during Victims.
• Seeing people who looked like European versions of people  I know on the UK.

முந்தாநாள் டாக்டர்களைப்பற்றி லேசாகக் கிண்டலடித்து எழுதியதன் நல்லூழ், அதே நாளில் ஒரு சின்னஞ்சிறிய விபத்தில் சிக்கிக்கொண்டேன்.

எங்கள் அலுவலகத்துக்கு நேர் எதிரே ஓர் அகன்ற சுற்றுச்சாலை (100 Feet Ring Road) உண்டு. அந்தச் சாலையைக் கடந்தால்தான் நான் வீட்டுக்குப் போகமுடியும்.

இதனால், தினமும் காலையில் அலுவலகம் வரும்போது ஒன்று, மதியம் சாப்பிடச் செல்லும்போது இரண்டு, மாலையில் வீடு திரும்புகையில் ஒன்று எனக் குறைந்தபட்சம் நான்குமுறை நான் அந்தச் சாலையைத் தாண்டியே தீரவேண்டும். வேறு குறுக்கு வழிகள் இல்லை.

ஒரே பிரச்னை, அந்தச் சாலையில் நடுராத்திரி பன்னிரண்டு மணிக்குக்கூட வண்டிகள் நிறைந்திருக்கும். பெரும்பாலும் ஓசூர் ரோட்டில் உள்ள ‘எலக்ட்ரானிக் சிட்டி’க்குச் சென்று திரும்புகிற சாஃப்ட்வேர் புள்ளிகளின் சொகுசு வாகனங்கள். ஒவ்வொன்றினுள்ளும் 90% இடம் காலியாக இருக்க, மூலையில் ஒரே ஒரு அப்பாவி ஜீவன் காதில் ப்ளூ டூத் சகிதம் ஸ்டீயரிங் சக்கரத்தையோ, ஹாரனையோ பொறுமையில்லாமல் அழுத்திக்கொண்டிருக்கும்.

இப்படிச் சாலை முழுக்க அரை சதுர இஞ்ச்கூட இடம் மீதமில்லாமல் காலி(Empty என்ற அர்த்தத்தில் வாசிக்கவும்)க் கார்கள் குவிந்திருந்தால், என்னைப்போல் நடந்துபோகிறவர்களுக்கு ஏது இடம்? அரசாங்கம் மனது வைத்து இங்கே ஒரு பாலமோ, தரையடிப் பாதையோ அமைத்துக் கொடுத்தால்தான் உண்டு. அதுவரை, ஒற்றைக்கால் கொக்குபோல் காத்திருந்து, போக்குவரத்து குறைகிற நேரமாகப் பார்த்து ஓட்டமாக ஓடிச் சாலையைக் கடப்பதுதான் ஒரே வழி.

நான் இந்த வீட்டுக்குக் குடிவந்து நான்கரை வருடமாகிறது. கிட்டத்தட்ட ஐந்தாயிரம் முறை இந்தச் சாலையைக் குறுக்கே ஓடிக் கடந்திருப்பேன், கடந்த திங்கள்கிழமைவரை எந்தப் பிரச்னையும் வந்ததில்லை.

அன்றைக்கு மதிய நேரத்தில் மழை பெய்து ஊர்முழுக்க நனைந்திருந்தது, சாலையும் வழுக்கல், அதன் நடுவே அமைத்திருந்த Dividerரும் வழுக்கல், இதை நான் கவனிக்கவில்லை.

வழக்கமாக நான் பாதிச் சாலையைக் கடந்ததும், மறுபுறத்தில் போக்குவரத்து எப்படி என்பதைக் கவனிப்பதற்காக அந்த Dividerமேல் அரை நிமிடமாவது நிற்பது வழக்கம். சில சமயங்களில் (முக்கியமாக மாலை நேரங்களில்), அடுத்த பக்கத்திலிருந்து வருகிற போக்குவரத்து மிகப் பலமாக இருந்தால், பத்து நிமிடம்வரைகூட அங்கேயே நின்றபடி தேவுடு காக்க நேர்ந்துவிடும்.

ஆனால் அன்றைக்கு, மறுபுறம் ஒரு வாகனம்கூட இல்லாமல் ‘வெறிச்’சிட்டிருந்தது. ‘ஆஹா, இன்னிக்கு என் அதிர்ஷ்ட நாள்’ என்று நினைத்துக்கொண்டே அவசரமாக ஒரு காலைக் கீழே வைத்தேன், மறுகால் வழுக்கி உள்ளே விழுந்துவிட்டேன்.

உண்மையில், ’விழுந்துவிட்டேன்’ என்பதுகூடச் சரியில்லை, ‘விழுந்’ என்பதற்குள் சமாளித்துக்கொண்டு ’எழுந்’தாகிவிட்டது, ஏதும் அடிபட்டதாகத் தெரியவில்லை, துளி வலி இல்லை, இல்லாத மீசையில் ஒட்டாத மண்ணைத் தட்டிவிட்டுக்கொண்டு மிச்சச் சாலையைக் குறுக்கே கடந்து சௌக்கியமாக வீட்டுக்குப் போய்விட்டேன்.

அதன்பிறகு மீண்டும் இரண்டுமுறை அதே சாலையைக் கடந்து நடந்தேன், ஆனால் காலில் வலி எதுவும் தெரியவில்லை, சில மணி நேரங்களுக்குள் கீழே விழுந்த விஷயத்தையே சுத்தமாக மறந்துபோய்விட்டேன்.

இரவு ஒன்பதரை மணிவாக்கில், வலி ஆரம்பித்தது. சுருக் சுருக்கென்று உள்ளே யாரோ கந்தல் துணி தைப்பதுபோல் ஆரம்பித்து, சிறிது நேரத்துக்குள் சம்மட்டியால் அடிப்பதுபோல் அதிகமாகிவிட்டது.

அடுத்த அரை மணி நேரத்தில் எந்த இடத்தில் துவங்கியது என்றே தெரியாதபடி பாதம்முழுக்க வலி பரவியிருந்தது. நமஸ்காரம் செய்கிற பாவனையில் உடம்பை வளைத்து நான் என் காலையே பிடித்துக்கொண்டிருக்கும் விநோதக்காட்சியைப் பார்த்து என் மனைவி அடக்கமாட்டாமல் சிரித்துவிட்டார்.

நான் வெறும் தரையில் காலை அழுத்தி நிற்க முயன்றேன். தடுமாற்றமாக இருந்தது, முதன்முறையாக அந்தச் சந்தேகம் வந்தது – ஒருவேளை எலும்பு முறிவா இருக்குமோ?

’அதெல்லாம் ஒண்ணும் இல்லை’ என்றார் என் மனைவி, ‘அயோடெக்ஸ் தடவிகிட்டுப் படு, எல்லாம் சரியாப் போய்டும்’

மனைவி சொல் மிக்க மந்திரம் ஏது? மருந்தை அதிகம் அழுத்தாமல் மெல்லத் தேய்த்துக்கொண்டு தூங்கினேன், காலை எழுந்தவுடன் கால் வலி காணாமல் போய்விடும் என்று ஒரு நம்பிக்கை.

ஆனால், தூங்கி எழுந்தபோது வலி அதிகரித்திருந்தது. காலைக் கீழே ஊன்றமுடிந்தது, ஆனால் சரியாக நடக்கமுடியவில்லை, உடனடியாக ஒரு மருத்துவரைப் பார்த்தாகவேண்டும்.

சோதனைபோல், நேற்றைக்கு அலுவலகத்தில் இரண்டு முக்கியமான கூட்டங்கள். எதையும் தள்ளிப்போடமுடியாது, மட்டம் போடவும் கூடாது.

எப்படியோ சமாளித்து அலுவலகம் வந்து சேர்ந்தேன், இரண்டு கூட்டங்களுக்கு நடுவே பக்கத்து மருத்துவமனையில் மாலை ஏழு மணிக்கு ஆர்த்தோ ஸ்பெஷலிஸ்ட் அப்பாயின்ட்மென்ட் வாங்கிக்கொண்டேன்.

இதனிடையே, ஒரு வேடிக்கையான விஷயத்தைக் கவனித்தேன், ஷூ போட்டுக்கொண்டு நடந்தால் கால் நன்றாக வலிக்கிறது, ஆனால் அதைக் கழற்றிவிட்டு வெறும் (சாக்ஸ்) காலோடு நடந்தால் சுத்தமாக வலி இல்லை, என்ன காரணமாக இருக்கும்? விதவிதமான ஊகங்களில் நேரம் சுவாரஸ்யமாக ஓடியது.

ஆறு ஐம்பத்தைந்துக்கு நான் மருத்துவமனை சென்று சேர்ந்தபோது, ஏற்கெனவே ஐந்து பேர் எலும்பு நிபுணருக்காகக் காத்திருந்தார்கள். என்னுடைய தொலைபேசி அப்பாயிண்ட்மென்ட்க்கு அங்கே மரியாதை இல்லை என்று புரிந்தது, வரிசையில் ஆறாவதாக இணைந்துகொண்டேன்.

நல்லவேளையாக, டாக்டர்  சரியான நேரத்தில் வந்தார், மளமளவென்று பதினைந்து நிமிடங்களுக்குள் ஆறு பேரையும் பார்த்து முடித்துவிட்டார்.

அதன்பிறகுதான் பிரச்னை ஆரம்பித்தது, இப்போது எங்கள் ஆறு பேருக்கும் எக்ஸ்ரே எடுக்கவேண்டும், அந்தச் சிறிய மருத்துவமனையின் சின்னஞ்சிறிய எக்ஸ்ரே அறைக்குள் நாங்கள் முட்டி மோதி நுழைய முயன்றதில் ஒன்றிரண்டு எலும்புகளாவது எக்ஸ்ட்ராவாக உடைந்திருக்கும்.

’சார், நீங்கல்லாம் படிச்சவங்கதானே? வரிசையில வாங்க சார்’

‘ஏன்ய்யா, நீயும் படிச்சவன்தானே? கால்ல அடிபட்டுகிட்டு எக்ஸ்ரே எடுக்க வர்றவங்களுக்கு சவுகர்யமா உட்கார்றதுக்கு ஒரு சேர்கூட இங்கே இல்லை, என்னய்யா லேப் நடத்தறீங்க?’, ஒரு பெரியவர் சத்தம் போட்டுக் கத்த, பயந்துபோன எக்ஸ்ரே பணியாளர் அவரை முதலாவதாக உள்ளே அனுமதித்துவிட்டார், அவருடைய கத்தல் உடனே அடங்கியது.

நான் பொறுமையாகக் காத்திருந்து ஆறாவதாக உள்ளே நுழைந்தேன். ரயில் பெர்த் சைஸ் படுக்கை ஒன்றில் படுக்கச் சொன்னார்கள்.

‘கால்லதானே எக்ஸ்ரே, அதுக்கு எதுக்குப் படுக்கணும்? உட்கார்ந்து காலை நீட்டினாப் போதாதா?’

’சொன்னாக் கேளுங்க சார்’, அவர் அலுத்துக்கொண்டார், ‘இல்லாட்டி Angle சரியா வராது, அப்புறம் உங்களுக்குதான் பிரச்னை’

பேசாமல் படுத்துக்கொண்டேன். அவர் என் காலைக் கண்டபடி இழுத்து வளைத்து ஒரு ஜில்லென்ற பலகைமீது வைத்தார், பின்னர் அதை எக்ஸ்ரே மெஷினின் மஞ்சள் வெளிச்சத்துக்குக் கீழே பொருத்தினார். அப்புறம் அறையில் ஒளிர்ந்துகொண்டிருந்த குழல் விளக்கை அணைத்துவிட, நெஞ்சு நிறையத் துணி கட்டித் தொப்பி போட்ட அந்தப் பணியாளரை அரையிருட்டில் பார்க்கையில் அச்சு அசல் ஸ்டார் ஹோட்டல் சமையல்காரரைப்போலவே இருந்தது.

அவர் என் காலைச் சரியான கோணத்தில் பிடித்துக்கொண்டு, ‘46/50’ என்பதுபோல் ஏதோ சொன்னார், பதிலுக்கு அதே அறையின் இன்னொரு மூலையில் இருந்த வேறொரு பணியாளர், ‘ஆன் பண்ணலாமா?’ என்றார்.

எனக்கு அவர்கள் சங்கேத மொழியில் என்ன பேசிக்கொள்கிறார்கள் என்பது புரியவில்லை. நாம் டிவியில் சத்தத்தை ஏற்றி இறக்குவதுபோல், எக்ஸ்-ரே-யின் வலிமையைக் கூட்டி, குறைக்கிறார்களோ என்னவோ, ஒருவேளை அவர் தப்பான பொத்தானை அழுத்திவிட்டால் இந்த எக்ஸ்ரே மெஷினிலிருந்து வரும் கதிர்கள் என்னைச் சுருட்டிச் சாப்பிட்டுவிடுமோ என்றெல்லாம் கேனத்தனமான பயங்கள்.

இதற்குள், என் காலைப் பிடித்திருந்தவர் கட்டை விரலை உயர்த்திக் காட்ட, இன்னொருவர் பொத்தானை அழுத்தினார், மஞ்சள் விளக்குப் பிரதேசத்திலிருந்து ‘பொய்ங்ங்ங்ங்க்’ என்பதுபோல் ஒரு சத்தம் வந்தது, அவ்வளவுதான்.

’எழுந்து உட்காருங்க’

’ஆச்சா?’

‘இன்னும் இல்லை, காலை இப்படி மடக்குங்க’

அப்புறம், உட்கார்ந்த நிலையில் ஒன்று, ரங்கநாதர் அனந்த சயன போஸில் இன்னொன்று என மூன்று எக்ஸ்ரேக்களும் சுபமாக முடிந்தன, ‘பத்து நிமிஷம் வெயிட் பண்ணுங்க’ என்றார்கள்.

வெளியே ஒரு பெரியவர் ஸ்ட்ரெச்சரில் படுத்திருந்தார், இடுப்பில் வலி தாங்காமல் அனத்திக்கொண்டிருந்தார், அவர் தமிழில் புலம்ப, ஸ்ட்ரெச்சரைத் தள்ளிய பணியாளர் கன்னடத்தில் ஆறுதல் சொன்னதைப் பார்க்கும்போது ஒரே நேரத்தில் வேடிக்கையாகவும் வேதனையாகவும் இருந்தது.

பதினைந்து நிமிடம் கழித்து என் எக்ஸ்ரே வெளியில் வந்தது, அதற்காகவே காத்திருந்த டாக்டர் பாய்ந்துவந்து பற்றிக்கொண்டார்.

மற்ற டாக்டர்களாவது கொஞ்சம் பரவாயில்லை, வருகிற நோயாளிகளை ஒவ்வொருவராகப் பார்த்து அனுப்பிவிட்டு வீட்டுக்குப் போய்ச்சேரலாம், ஆனால், எலும்பு நிபுணர்கள் ஒவ்வொருவருடைய எக்ஸ்ரே திரும்பி வரும்வரை தேவுடு காக்கவேண்டும், ஷூட்டிங் முடிந்து, படம் வெளியாகி, முதல் ஷோ பார்த்து விமர்சனம் சொல்லாமல் அவர்களுடைய பணி முடிவடைவதில்லை.

இந்த டாக்டர் பாவம், எங்கள் ஆறு பேருக்கும் கால் மணி நேரத்தில் எக்ஸ்ரே குறிப்பு எழுதிக் கொடுத்துவிட்டு, அதன்பிறகு ஒன்றரை மணி நேரம் டைம்ஸ் ஆஃப் இந்தியா படித்துக்கொண்டு பொறுமையாகக் காத்திருந்தார், ஒவ்வொரு எக்ஸ்ரேவாக வெளிவரும்போது, அவருக்கு இரண்டு நிமிடமோ, ஐந்து நிமிடமோ எக்ஸ்ட்ரா வேலை, மற்றபடி டைம்ஸ் ஆஃப் இந்தியாவே கதி.

இதனால், கடைசியாக வந்த என்னுடைய எக்ஸ்ரேவைப் பார்த்ததும் அவருக்கு உற்சாகம், வீட்டுக்குப் போகிற வேகத்தில் விறுவிறுவென்று அதில் கண்களை ஓட்டிவிட்டு, ‘எலும்பு முறிவு எதுவும் இல்லை, ஒரு மாத்திரை எழுதித் தர்றேன், க்ரீம் தர்றேன், நாலு நாள்ல எல்லாம் சரியாப் போய்டும்’ என்று நெஞ்சில் பால் வார்த்தார்.

‘டாக்டர் ஒரு சந்தேகம்’

‘என்னது?’

’நாளைக்கு நான் ஆஃபீஸ் விஷயமா டெல்லி போகவேண்டியிருக்கு, அதைக் கேன்ஸல் பண்ணனுமா?’

‘டெல்லிக்கு நடந்தா போகப்போறீங்க?’ அவர் கிண்டலாகக் கேட்டார்.

’இல்லை டாக்டர், ஃப்ளைட்ல’

‘அப்ப தாராளமாப் போய்ட்டு வாங்க, நோ ப்ராப்ளம்’

விறுவிறுவென்று எனக்கு மருந்து எழுதிக் கிழித்துக் கொடுத்துவிட்டு அவர் உற்சாகத் துள்ளலுடன் வெளியேறினார். அவரும் அதே சாலையைக் கடந்துதான் வீட்டுக்குப் போகவேண்டும்.

இந்தப் பதிவு பிடித்திருந்தால், இங்கே க்ளிக் செய்து ’ஓ’(ட்டு) போடுங்க

ஒரு வாரமாக, அலுவலகம் போகிற வழியில் தினந்தோறும் அந்தக் காட்சியைத் தவறாமல் பார்க்கிறேன் – அதிகப் போக்குவரத்து இல்லாத எங்கள் தெருவின் சிமென்ட் சாலையில் மூன்று பேர் நடை பழகுவதுபோல் முன்னே, பின்னே மாறி மாறி நடந்துகொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள்.

பெங்களூரின் ஒவ்வொரு தெருவிலும் எந்நேரமும் ஏதாவது ஒரு வீடு கட்டிக்கொண்டிருப்பார்கள். புது வீடாக இல்லாவிட்டாலும், இருக்கும் பழைய வீட்டை இடித்துக் கட்டுவார்கள், அல்லது ஒரு மாடி சேர்ப்பார்கள், இருப்பதைப் புதுப்பித்து அழகுபடுத்துவார்கள், இதை அதாகவும் அதை இதாகவும் மாற்றுவார்கள், இங்குள்ளவர்களுக்குக் காரணம் இருந்தாலும், இல்லாவிட்டாலும் அவ்வப்போது வீட்டை ஏதாவதுவிதமாக மாற்றாவிட்டால் உடம்பெல்லாம் நடுங்க ஆரம்பித்துவிடும் என்று நினைக்கிறேன் – சில இளைஞர்கள், இளைஞிகளின் ’செல்ஃபோன் மாற்றும் பித்து’போல.

இது ஒரு புதிய அடுக்ககம். இரண்டு மாடிகள் கட்டி முடித்து மூன்றாவதில் வேலை நடந்துகொண்டிருக்கிறது. அதற்குத் தேவையான செங்கல், மணல், இன்னபிற சமாசாரங்கள் கீழிருந்து மேலே போய்ச் சேரவேண்டும்.

இதற்குத் தோதாக அவர்கள் ஒரு தாற்காலிக ஏற்பாடு செய்திருந்தார்கள். மேலே ஒரு சின்னக் கிணறு ராட்டினம் அமைத்து, அதில் நீளமான தாம்புக் கயிறு தொங்கவிடப்பட்டிருந்தது, அதன் ஒரு முனையில் ’S’ வடிவ இரும்புக் கொக்கி ஒன்று, இன்னொரு முனையில் ஒரு நான்கடி மரக்கட்டையை நன்றாக இறுக்கிக் கட்டியிருந்தார்கள்.

இப்போது, கொக்கியில் ஒரு கனமான மூட்டையைத் தொங்கவிடுகிறார்கள், இன்னொரு முனையில் உள்ள மரக்கட்டையை மூன்று பேர் சேர்ந்து இழுத்தபடி தெருவோடு நடக்கிறார்கள், அந்தப் பக்கம் மூட்டை மேலே போய்ச் சேர்ந்துவிடுகிறது.

மூன்றாவது மாடியில் வேலை பார்க்கிறவர்கள், மூட்டையில் உள்ள பொருள்களை எடுத்துக்கொண்டு, கயிற்றை இழுத்து சிக்னல் கொடுக்கிறார்கள். உடனே, பின்னோக்கி நடந்தவர்கள் திரும்ப முன்னோக்கி வருகிறார்கள், காலி மூட்டை கீழே வந்து சேர்கிறது.

காலை தொடங்கி, மதியம், மாலைவரை இவர்கள் இப்படியே நடந்துகொண்டிருப்பார்கள், அவ்வப்போது ஒருவர் ஓய்வு எடுப்பார், அவருக்குப் பதில் இன்னொருவர் ஜோதியில் ஐக்கியமாவார், மற்றபடி நீதி கேட்கும் நெடும்பயணம் நிற்காமல் தொடர்கிறது.

அடிப்படையில் இது Pulley தத்துவம்தான் என்பதால், எத்தனை கனமான மூட்டையைத் தூக்குவதற்கும் அதிக உடல் உழைப்பு தேவைப்படாது என்று நினைக்கிறேன். ஒரே நேரத்தில் மூன்று பேர் சேர்ந்து இழுப்பதால், இன்னும் எளிதாக இருக்கவேண்டும்.

ஆனால், செக்கு மாட்டின் வட்டப்பாதையை நீட்டிவிட்டாற்போல் இப்படி மாற்றி மாற்றி நாள்முழுக்க முன்னாலும் பின்னாலும் நடந்துகொண்டிருந்தால் போரடிக்காது?

ஹிட்லரின் சித்திரவதைக் கேம்ப்களைப்பற்றிப் பல கதைகள் சொல்வார்கள். இவற்றில் எது நிஜம், எது கற்பனை என்று கண்டுபிடிப்பதுகூடச் சிரமம்.

அப்படி ஒரு கதை, கைதிகளுக்குத் தரப்படுகிற விநோதமான ‘வேலை’களைப்பற்றியது.

இந்தக் கைதிகள், ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் தரையில் ஒரு பெரிய பள்ளம் தோண்டவேண்டும். அதைத் தோண்டி முடித்ததும், உடனடியாகப் பக்கத்தில் குவித்திருக்கும் மண்ணைப் போட்டு அதை  மூடிவிடவேண்டும்.

அதாவது, ஆறு மணி நேரம் கஷ்டப்பட்டுப் பள்ளம் தோண்டியது வீண். உள்ளே எதையும் போட்டுப் புதைக்காமல், அடுத்த ஒன்றிரண்டு மணி நேரத்தில் அவர்களே அதை முழுவதுமாக மூடிவிடுகிறார்கள். தரை பழையபடி சமதளமாகிவிடுகிறது.

மறுநாள் காலை, மறுபடியும் பள்ளம், மறுபடியும் மூடல், சமதளம், பள்ளம், மூடல், சமதளம், … இப்படியே தினசரி தொடர்ந்து செய்துகொண்டிருந்தால், ஒன்றுக்கும் பிரயோஜனமில்லாமல் வாழ்ந்துகொண்டிருக்கிறோம் என்கிற அந்த Boredomமட்டுமே அவர்களைக் கொன்றுவிடுமாம்.

அந்தக் கைதிகளோடு ஒப்பிடும்போது, இந்த ’நடை’யர்களின் வேலை கொஞ்சம் பெட்டர். வெட்டியாக மண்ணைத் தோண்டி மூடாமல், கண்ணெதிரே ஒரு கட்டடம் உருவாவதையாவது அவர்கள் பார்க்கலாம்.
