Source: photovisi

I’m so happy and excited! I finally have enough posts to do a Flavour Favourites post for one of my favourite foods: TOFU! And not just any post devoted to tofu, this is a special tofu and tofu scramble brunch edition post! Even though I’ve been eating tofu almost all my life, it wasn’t until I started my crazy food exploration 4 years ago that I realized just how versatile it was as a vegetarian brunch main. I was especially intrigued by tofu scramble and the more I saw it on vegetarian and vegan brunch menus, the more I wanted to try them all. Tofu scramble with vegan cheddar, tofu scramble with spinach and diced onions, on crispy corn tortillas, with peppers and spices – I totally have a “gotta catch ‘em all!” mentality towards it now and it’s been so much fun trying the dishes that I have and discovering new eateries and hot spots along the way.

Oh, and did you notice the snazzy photo collages?! I love them, they’re so pretty if I do say so myself! I didn’t actually create the backgrounds, I just picked the template and plugged the photos in. But it was fun nevertheless! I’ve been feeling so sad about my lack of scrapbooking that I felt compelled to do something colourful and creative with my photos. It’s been tough. Ever since I started working full-time M-F, scrapbooking just hasn’t happened and it certainly hasn’t been because of a lack of desire. It’s purely a lack of time. I hate even saying it because it makes me sound like a person who whines and complains about not having enough time, making excuses, and not doing anything to change it.

Source: Ate by Ate’s Facebook page

Believe me, I’ve made an effort.

I’ve bought new materials for projects on my to-do list, I developed some new photos for new layouts. But with a M-F full-time schedule and weekends jam-packed with getting and preparing blog stories and content and fitting in time with my boyfriend, friends, and family, there has been virtually nothing left for quiet, undisturbed sit-down time with my paper and scissors. I want to change this so much so here’s to hoping I find a way to do it because this was one of the major reasons why I started Ate by Ate in the first place.

Let’s get this tofu brunch show started!

All you need is cheese.

It’s more than just the name of a magazine to me – they’re words to live by! I know cheese isn’t the healthiest of foods (yes, yes, sodium and fat content and all that jazz), but as a foodie and lifelong lover of cheese, I can’t imagine life without it. I sample fresh Ontario cheeses from the farmers’ markets. A burger just isn’t the same if a melty, gooey slice hasn’t been melted in it. I’ve been known to eat cream cheese-and-nothing-else sandwiches. And don’t even get me started on the extra shreds I sprinkle onto my tacos, enchiladas, burritos, omelettes, and pasta. We don’t have enough space in this post for that novel! So it makes complete and perfect sense why a wine and cheese bar would be my dining dream come true. Sure, I may not drink wine but I make up for it in cheese consumption! How Caren’s Wine & Cheese Bar on Cumberland Street in Yorkville alluded me for so long is beyond me.

Housed in a tall, beautiful Victorian style home bathed in shades of gray and charcoal with stone accents and warm pops of green and orange, Caren’s is quaint and sophisticated and yet completely accessible and I don’t just mean physically accessible by public transit! I know many of the eateries and establishments in Yorkville (and the neighbourhood itself) may come across as upscale and out-of-reach to us average folk, but I’m telling you, appearances can be deceiving and I’ve certainly allowed my preconceived notions inform my decisions about places before I got the chance to know them in the past. Behind the chic, polished exterior is warmth, comfort, and homeyness oozing with wonderful food and drink, a peaceful, inviting atmosphere, and one of the nicest places to dine in the city. It’s romantic, it’s inviting, and it’s SO PERFECT for relaxing weekend brunch meals, intimate dinner evenings, and get-togethers and cocktail parties.

So, how did I find out about Caren’s? While I would love to say that I “stumbled” on it during a beautiful walk through the neighbourhood, I can’t. I owe this one to my sweet coworker, Pat. While she and I were discussing yummies and fun things in Yorkville (I was raving about Mela and she was raving about stationery – great minds think alike!), she mentioned Caren’s and how she was cheese classmates with Tiffany MacIssac, Caren’s master of cheese. Curious beyond belief, I looked up the Yorkville gem online and immediately fell in love. Cheese! Weekend brunch! Yorkville! That was certainly all the convincing I needed! And what impeccable timing. I wanted to take a stroll through Yorkville anyway so I made it my mission to go to Caren’s for weekend brunch this past weekend and the plan went out without a hitch (fter all my flub-ups, fall-throughs and disappointments as of late it was about time something went my way!). Weekend brunch, 11:30 am sharp!

Caren’s menus focus on French cuisine with some Italian and European influences in conjunction with local, Canadian fare – after all, it is a wine and cheese bar! Their extensive brunch menu incorporates a number of brunch classics (French toast, omelettes, pancakes, eggs benny and more) as well as plenty of savoury soups, salads, and sandwiches, and featured items that highlight their wonderful selection and offering of cheeses. Brunch prices are $10 on the low-end and $20 on the highest end, with most menu items coming in between $12-$16. Their menu offers 19 dishes with additional sides at extra charge including parsley home fries, apple wood smoked bacon, chorizo sausage, house cured gravlox, and more.

You can enjoy your meal in the comforts of their ground floor dining area and bar, their outdoor front patio, their intimate 2nd floor dining room, OR – wait for this – their ridiculously gorgeous back patio courtyard that might as well be a cabana oasis! I was shocked out of my leggings when I stepped into their back courtyard to snap a few photos. It is breathtaking. Cushions, lanterns, soft glows, palms – THIS is where an amazing cocktail party takes place! Caren’s will rent out their dining areas for private functions so this is definitely something to keep in mind for everyone!

I had myself my own little food party in the form of weekend brunch yesterday. I’m not kidding. I ordered a ridiculous amount of food and by the end, I was truly stuffed! On Deb’s plate: Caren’s soup of the day ($12), creamy roasted potato and leek with tomatoes and Italian grano padano cheese (like I would have a meal here without any cheese – pish!) and their eggs pacific ($13), a dish of potato rosti, salmon, truffled eggs (insanely fluffy scrambled!), fruit and greens, and creme fraiche. Their meal-size soup was monstrous! I should have known better. I was expecting a side bowl, maybe a medium-sized bowl. Nope, meal-sized. But I have no regrets. Because it was mouthwateringly delicious.

Creamy, smooth, and velvety, I had freshly cracked black pepper sprinkled on, and the olive oil, tomatoes, and cheese made the soup so flavourful and savoury. The texture was perfect and the tomatoes gave it that hint of freshness and juiciness. It wasn’t heavy at all and the cheese? I could eat it by the spoonful. Similar to Parmigianno Reggiano, it was grated onto the soup and it gave the soup that extra hit of savouriness and meatiness to make it really feel like a meal-size soup.

And my eggs pacific. OH.MY.GOD. Smoked salmon lovers, you need this in your life. I have NEVER had a meal that gave me so much thick, savoury, slices of smoked cured salmon in my life. Half the time, meals will often fall short of the desirable amount. But this? Fit for two meals. Slice after slice of amazing, scrumptious salmon filled my plate with a fluffy mountain of eggs, potato rosti rounds underneath, and a huuuuge dollop of red onion capered creme fraiche. I’m telling you, the salmon and creme fraiche MAKES this dish. If there was anything I’d change, I’d make the potato rosti a little thicker, but that’s about it. It was truly delicious and the creme fraiche just brings everything together as you can use it for the potato rosti, the smoked salmon, and the eggs. It breaks up the salty, cured flavour of the salmon and keeps it from becoming too overwhelming. And the soup, a spontaneous choice in the beginning, proved to be a great complement to the meal!

Even though I never feel like I have enough time to enjoy everything I want to enjoy during my days out, I feel fulfilled that I got to try this wonderful dining spot out and you can bet that I’ll be back for more weekend brunch.

There’s a first time for everything! Well, most things anyway. I’ve never dined in a wine and cheese bar before and while this meal and first visit was strictly devoted to brunch, sans the wine and cheese (I could have had some, but I didn’t – this time!), it still counts as a dining experience in a beautiful, posh and classy wine and cheese bar in one of my favourite parts of town. Welcome to Caren’s Wine & Cheese Bar on Cumberland St. in Yorkville! My co-worker, Pat, who adores cheese even more than I do, told me about this wonderful gem run, in part, by cheese consultant and tastings extraordinaire, Tiffany MacIsaac. I must have passed by the adorable house the bar is housed in a million times but I never realized it was such a popular destination until Pat brought it to my attention. And I do mean popular – I was not the only one lined up at 11:30am sharp this morning out on their pretty front patio! Yorkville is truly a gift of food that just keeps on giving. Enjoy the photo spotlight; full-length Part II post to come tomorrow!

We were impressed on a recent walk along the self-guided track in the Rise and Shine reserve by a striking patch of many Green comb Spider Orchids Caladenia tentaculata.

I’ll never forget the moment I felt my mouth start to quiver, my breathing grow shallow, and my eyes tear up. This could not be happening, I thought. Not again. My Veggielicious hopes crushed and my plans for Veggielicious bliss foiled right before my eyes on the last weekend of an event I had been looking forward to for over a year. The timing couldn’t have been worse. I was stunned and rendered speechless, sputtering my discontent in sighs of frustration. I couldn’t believe my rotten luck. Right then and there, I wanted to throw in the towel on blogging anything altogether.

Melodramatic? Maybe a little. Heartbreaking? To a foodie like myself, positively absolutely. But! Let’s remind ourselves though that, like any great drama, there can still be excitement and joy amidst the angst and turmoil. So get comfortable because this is a story of initial heartbreak gone right, silver linings, the bright side, and new doors opening after others close. This is the story of the Veggielicious that never happened and, given the circumstances, just wasn’t meant to be. This is a story of food at Hotel Gelato.

Let’s rewind to last weekend, the last weekend of Veggielicious 2012. I was so excited I was almost skipping down the street. After my plans for Veggielicious at E.L. Ruddy had fallen through the weekend prior, all cylinders were raring to go and my sights and tastebuds were set on Hotel Gelato and their Veggielicious menu: spinach and kale salad with chickpeas, sun-dried tomatoes and tahini dressing, quinoa and sweet potato chili, and lentil cakes made with red lentils and zucchini with a root vegetable salad. I was salivating even before I walked in. My heart was pumping a bazillion clicks a minute and I was beyond ecstatic. And then, the world came crashing down around me when I was delivered the news: because of weekend brunch, Veggielicious was only going to be around from 3pm onward over the weekend. On any other day it would have been available during the day, for lunch, what have you. But for the weekend? Not so much.

I wanted to cry. Again.

On the way to Hotel Gelato…

The unthinkable had happened. I had messed up both Veggielicious plans and there was nothing I could do about it. I couldn’t come back for dinner because I had promised my mum I’d come home for a great meal she had in the works. And I wasn’t going to pack up and leave. I adored Hotel Gelato and the thought of up and leaving didn’t seem…right. So I sat down in my seat, moped for all of a few minutes, and snapped out of it. Okay, so Veggielicious was no longer within my grasp. But by golly, there were shiny pumpkins on their mantle and I thought, come hell or high water I’m going to enjoy my weekend brunch here and make the best of it!

And I did. With one of the most fabulous vegetarian fall salads EVER to grace my tastebuds!

Introducing Hotel Gelato’s fluffy fall-inspired quinoa salad ($13) with butternut squash, beets, arugula, roasted shallots, and toasted pine nuts, tossed in a fresh lemon basil dressing and topped with some crispy beet chips on top! Talk about getting to the “root” of fabulous food! Fall vegetables with a light as air, crisp and clean dressing with an equally light as air quinoa? Perfection. What a fantastic salad and brunch dish. As part of Hotel Gelato’s permanent weekend brunch menu, it had such an air of lightness to it, like it was only meant to be enjoyed during a peaceful zen moment. The quinoa was fluffy and the vegetables, which were mostly diced, were beautiful in colour, taste, and texture. There was crunch from the nuts, juiciness from the squash and beets, air pockets from the quinoa, that great peppery, leafy bite from the delicious arugula, freshness from the dressing, and warmth, coziness, and savouriness from the roasted shallots.

Here’s a very important tidbit to know though about this dish: the online menu says sweet potato in the salad but when you’re dining in, the menu clearly says butternut squash and it is butternut squash that you will receive! Just by looking at them, sweet potatoes and butternut squash look nearly identical in appearance, especially when the flesh is scooped out and diced. But, based on taste and texture, it’s obvious when you eat it which one is being used in the salad. Sweet potatoes have a much higher content of starch whereas butternut squash is juicier. I am definitely not complaining about the difference in dine-in and online menu though because butternut squash floats my boat so finally, some good vibes coming my way!

And this was by no means a piddly serving. This was a ginormous dish! The salad was served on a huuuge square serving dish with a salad gift that just kept on giving! I brought home leftovers, shared them with my mum who’s an absolute fiend for beets, and she loved it so much she wishes we had 10 more plates of it! THAT is how wonderful this brunch salad is. The colours and flavours scream fall and comfort and it has to be one of the healthiest, most satisfying vegetarian and vegan brunch dishes. For those who love cheese there’s an option of adding crumbled goat cheese for $3 and grilled chicken for $4 for the meaties.

I was so, so happy and relieved in the end. A heart-sinking moment of dread turned into a memorable, delicious dish that I would come back for in a heartbeat. Veggielicious or not, I got the chance to try a vegetarian and vegan dish I had never tried before and I got to eat some butternut squash which is so fitting for fall! What seems meant to be sometimes isn’t and sometimes, the best things are right under your very nose.

*****

Hotel Gelato is located at 532 Eglinton Ave. West just west of Heddington Ave. between Avenue Rd. and Bathurst Street. They serve breakfast and lunch every day from Monday to Friday with a weekend brunch menu on Saturdays and Sundays. Their breakfast menu is available from 8am-11:30am and lunch all-day.

CharlotteCarrendar: -The dark velvet curtains blotted out the suns rays that had hit the ice and snow that was all around the outside of Charlotte’s manor. Within the darkened bedroom, amongst feathers, torn sheets and blankets, blood stains, love stains, lay the newly united couple. Their bodies intertwined, Charlotte’s head nestled just shy of Raz’s shoulder, her hair a veil of black gossamer, that flowed down and covered her breasts and back. Her snores were so light, they could barely be heard, and yet she slept as though she had not done for a thousand years. Their union was the marking of their love, the two immortals, had been at it all night, as their pent up sexual fevour had them release such aggression, that the scratch marks and blooded stains, on her back, neck and his lips showed just how feriocous their love for each other was. There was no other sound, the air still….Perfection.

RazielZerati: *It had been a long time since he exerted such passion into a union like this.. it even drained all the energy he had right the way till the very moment they both cuddled and fell asleep.. it truly was bliss and he felt…. peaceful.. as the morn came, Raziel’s eyes opened as he woke.. he wondered if what had happened was nothing but a cruel dream.. but the light weight upon his arm however seemed to have indicated otherwise which gave him a wide smile. He wanted this for quite some time.. and now that he had what he desired.. he was going to keep it.. he leaned his head closer and kissed her forehead tenderly before stilling once more… he would just watch her.. staring at her face as he continued to smile.. he was feeling a hell of a lot better because of it though.. the blood she allowed him to take had rejuvinated his body.. it would be good especially now that he was looking to protect her.. and of course defend himself from that brother of hers too.. if he learned what transpired, oh the fight could devistate half the city by his reckoning… never the less he could not help but admire the angelic face of this demoness he held to him.. he explored her and she to him.. now they both knew each other intimately… what more could he ever ask for at that moment?

CharlotteCarrendar: – Charlotte finally started to stir, her eyelids fluttered and soon her jade eyes, illuminated by the reflection of the long burning candles would gaze upon her lover and true, Raziel. She stretched her body slowly, coiling around him further, much like a snake, her fingers crawling along his skin like tarantulas, as a slow smile crept upon her stained crimson lips. (Charlotte)”This isn’t a dream…..its real.”- she too had thought the night of primal lovemaking was just fantasy, but as she could see from the blood on his lips, that he had done more than just penetrate her, but had feasted upon her blood at the exact moments of climax, which is what sustained and brought him energy. (Charlotte)”I take it, breakfast won’t be needed.” she said with a light chuckle, kissing his shoulder and then resting her chin, as she waited to see what he would say. She had staked her claim in Raziel, as she had wanted to for so long now. She had held back, and placed up walls, due to his other love, who had repeatedly let him down. But one thing was to be said of Charlotte. Once she had made her mark, one could never remove her. The red sigil upon her neck blazed brightly, and set off the hue of her alabaster skin.

RazielZerati: *he noted the mumble she made as she woke.. it was scary how they thought alike in this manner… never the less he would see her beautiful jade eyes.. met with pure sapphire like orbs as they seemed to pierce the darkness and shine. He would proceed to nod as he spoke up with a soft voice* Not today… I got my breakfast last night thanks to you… now I am no longer ashamed to feed… *with that he would lean his head forward, letting his tongue flick out and lightly touch to the tip of her nose as he then began to make a purring like sound from within his throat.. he murred in pure content as he continued to stare at her gaze.. his head tilting as he spoke softly to her again* Perhaps I should cook you breakfast this time hmm?… I did used to be a chef in the late 1400′s in England.. *with that he smirked.. he underwent many jobs as undercover for assassinations, pass the time or whatever other reason.. he spent more time as a mercenary however. But right now he was simply a man with a woman… and that made him happier than all the fortune he inherited by defeating his father once in battle long ago*

VincentShadowDweller: *Vincent travels threw the wooded area outside of a small Inn that he had tracked the man known as Raziel to hopeing he was there so he could ask the man to make him a shadow weapon as he had heard he was the “Master of Shadows”. Vincent took long strides in the darkness his massive frame moveing quickly threw the area Vincent standing at nine foot seven inches and wieghing in at six hundred and fifty pounds. Vincents skin is as dark as the night itself with red demonic arcane symbols on it as he is a shadow demon. His eyes as dark as night but barely able to been seen under his low hanging hood that was attached to the cape that he wore that was also black, he also wore black jeans and boots that fit well so he was flexable. Quickly strideing threw the area he reached the door to the Inn it being massive most would have trouble moving it but nit Vincent as he has been strength training sence he was created and he pushed the door with ease and walked into the Inn and shut the door behind him. Vincent then walked up the person behind the desk and in a serious tone asked “Is there a male named Raziel here? I have tracked him to this Inn and would like to speak with him.” He the waited for the responce of the desk clerk impatiently.*

CharlotteCarrendar: – She chuckled as he licked her nose, the soft sound of his purring had her chest heave as she let out more of her mirth at how cute he was in the morning. (Charlotte)”And some wake up like a wolf with a bad head after a night of feeding, I think you fared better with me, than with fifty bottles of Mead.” -she toyed with his blonde locks, enjoying the closeness they were sharing, an intimacy that only would be between the very closest of lovers. The idea of breakfast was growing on her, as her stomach made a small growl of its own, the battle between the sheets had left her hungry. (Charlotte)”Well, there is a full chef’s kitchen downstairs, and….I would love to see you in an apron.”- This would have her eyes smiling, dancing jade hues set in the blackness that was around her eyes. She rolled over, her bare ass exposed as she reached over the bed to pick up the tattered remains of her clothing. Holding it up, she remarked. (Charlotte)”Won’t be wearing this again…heh.”

RazielZerati: *He would grin at the thought of her not wearing any clothing on a permanent basis… but he was far too wolf like to let others see her the way he saw her now.. he would of course sit up straight as he then looked around for pants… realising that they were in fact destroyed as well. It was no real loss to him however as he simply hopped out of bed in the nude and was standing behind Charlotte.. he of course saw her bend over and he could not help but give her ass cheek a slap before he chuckled… walking around to face her while he dug a claw into the flesh of his hip.. his will allowing not blood to seep out, but shadows in liquid form as he stood there before her… the darkness trailing down his leg and running along his waist.. even going upwards against his stomach which was a clear indication that it was neither blood nor water.. unless blood magic was used but not in this case. Soon enough his legs would be coated and the black would form pants.. complete with a PVC apron to barely cover the torso… he smirked as he let her check this look out before eventually turning and making his way downstairs to the kitchen.. he recalled seeing it as he passed to go to the special chamber last night.. meanwhile within the Tavern, a single bartender would look up to Vincent.. confused as to who the name was as she tilted her head* (Bartender) “I.. umm… Raz… eeel?.. umm.. I will see if I can find who you ar-” *Of course another voice would cut in as an elegant gentleman would speak out as he spoke* “Ah yes sir, I do happen to know the gentlemen named Raziel. I believe, good sir, that the man you seek is down a ways from here at the Carrendar Manor with the Lady Charlotte. It would be as good a guess as any for them to be getting a good rump on after the rather exotic display he performed on the Television last night” *the man of course was none other than Baldrick.. who was nice and neatly dressed as always and carried a spot of professionalism on him. So he would stand there and see if the man would speak anymore, though in the back of his mind… the thought of those two bonking and Laertes finding out sent visible shivers up his spine.. oh how he dreaded being around that man*

CharlotteCarrendar: – Charlotte immediately had her body jolt from getting the rawhide slap on the ass, and rolled over tossing the shredded pants and top over the bed. (Charlotte)”Frisky in the morning too?” she was in a good mood, a really good mood, and leapt off the bed, to find something suitable to wear from her wardrobe, where as Raziel had used his own shadows to create….a pvc like apron? That was priceless. She chuckled and chirped happily as she flicked through the cupboard, getting a pair of black jeans, and matching shirt. Picking up an ivory handled brush she brushed her hair till it shone, and then bound it up into a ponytail, leaving her looking fresh faced as she finally headed down to the kitchen to join Raziel. At the Inn, Nami was starting her day early, seating people at tables, filling water glasses and handing out menus, all the while looking adorable in a Moose and Squirrel dress, with the name sewn on the bodice. The Inn keeper watched her proudly, seeing such a kindly girl doing her work with little of no fuss.

OhNegative: ~Crunch crunch crunch~ The sound of footfall breaking snow could be heard faintly along with quiet sounds of disgruntled complaining. “Why Darian? Why did you not wear shoes?” He griped at himself as he approached the slightly familiar tavern. “Oh I don’t know Darian, it’s not like I have been to the fishing village area where it’s still cold as a well-diggers ass in the middle of summer.” He responded to himself in a mocking voice of himself as he pulled his silk garments around his body a bit more. “Can’t win for my own sense of nifty wardrobe. But who wears shoes with such an elegant kimono!? A man with no style…That’s who.” He chuckled and drowned out the feeling of pins and needles affecting the bottoms of his feet. Alas, he had arrived at the tavern. His left hand curled into a tight fist, preparing to knock at the door. “Oh pssh!” He said to himself and grabbed the the door knob, twisting it ’round before pushing the door open and stepping inside. /Oh thank you God, now just allow me to have feet that aren’t black from frost bite and I’ll pray tonight./ He thought to himself and nudged the door closed with his elbow before grabbing the knee area of his kimono and lifting it to look upon his feet. /Whew, still there…Red, but not black!/ He laughed like a maniac in his own mind and releaszed his garments before looking about the large hall of the tavern.

RazielZerati: *At the Manor, Raziel hardly ever had much need to brush his hair.. however he is just simply carrying on to the kitchen and looking around.. the big question now is simply this… what does Charlotte enjoy eating for breakfast?.. it took a while to guess.. but then he thought about it and instead began to flip through the cupboards to see what was available.. flour.. bread… milk.. bacon… eggs.. sugar.. coffee.. perfect.. He took his sweet time however as he began preparing the meal.. Elements on the stove active, two pans ready to be heated and he was already at it.. the smell of bacon, eggs, pancakes and curiously enough french toast flooded the air around him.. along with the strong scent of Jasmine that seemed to have only gotten stronger and more… ‘healthier’ ever since last night.. all the while, Raz would retrieve a pair of plates and place them down.. already having half a mind to use telekinesis… oop there it goes… the jug switch was turned on and a cup would float out of the cupboard and onto the bench.. spoon, coffee and suger following as well as he organised a coffee for Charlotte all the while cooking breakfast… now what kind of perfect human male could do all that while standing in one spot?))

CharlotteCarrendar:- Coming into the kitchen the scent was heavenly including the Jasmine that was coming from Raziel. Charlotte came up behind Raziel and wrapped her arms around his waist, and peeked her head over his shoulder, to see what he was cooking. (Charlotte)”Ok now I know this is too good to be true. You can cook.”- She teased, her voice full of mirth, before untangling herself and moving to get cutlery and plates to set the table. It had been a long time since Charlotte had been just on her own with one that she loved, usually it was staff that hovered about her, but not this day. If only there would be more like it. At the Inn, Nami was waving a menu in Darian’s face, and offering him a seat for the Breakfast rush, and when she looked down to see he was wearing shoes with his kimono, she bit her bottom lip and said in her disjointed voice- (Nami)”Meeetttrrrooo ssseeexxuuall.’ -Boy did she nail it right on the head. The Inn Keeper burst out laughing, guffawing at the word, that was rarely used in this rough and tumble town.
OhNegative : Darian batted at the menu as if he were being assaulted by it and backed away from the girl with widened eyes. The words that escaped her lips were words that he had only heard once or twice in his existance, thus he failed to react properly. “Oh yes! I knew someone would appreciate a fashionably intelligent man!” He said in a bubbly tone and lifted his nose upward with a small ~Hmph~. “I bet you’re a woman of class aren’t you?” He asked curiously and still hadn’t deciphered the fact that she was waiving a menu in front of his face beforehand.

CharlotteCarrednar: – “She’s deaf” – the innkeeper would be heard to say, coming up behind Nami who was beaming and waving the menu in his face- (Nami)”Breeeaakkkffaasst?”

OhNegative: Darian looked at the Innkeeper as if they had shot at her. “Shhh! That’s a terrible thing to say! What if she hears yo….” He said quickly and pressed his hand to his mouth as he caught the stupid thing that had just escaped him. “Oh…Oh my.” He whispered and smiled at the girl before waving his hand at her with a bright smile. “HELLLOOOOO THERE! I’M NOT HUNGRY ACTUALLY, I MIGHT JUST HAVE A DRINK!” He bellowed, not ever having actually met a deaf person before, just those hard of hearing.

VincentShadowDweller: *Vincent listens to the man whom spoke to him and nodded at the end of his discription of the exotic things that had happened here and that didnt phase him but he wasnt going to travel there to find the man Raziel in bed with a women and inturrpt anything. So Vincent figured that he would have to come back at some point, so he walked away from the man and to the bar without a word and pulled out a chair and looked to the person behind the bar and said “Ill have some of your finest Ale.” and he threw three gold coins on the table waiting for the ale.*

RazielZerati: RazielZerati: *The Inn Keeper would blink as he covered his ears from the shouting.. he then spoke out as he tried to talk to the man* You don’t have to yell… damn… *while the Inn Keeper had fingers to his ears, he would watch as Nami would point to her lips… moving them up and down as he stared up to the man all cute like.. though as if in a bad singing tone, she spoke out to him* (Nami) Reeeaaad… liiippssss…. *the Inn Keeper would pop the finger out of the ear before the brazen man would speak* just speak to the girl normally.. she can read ya lips and understand. Or better yet go see the barkeep, she’ll set you up well with a drink. *with that he would turn and proceed to walk off, Nami simply standing there noting the way the man had dressed.. it reminded her a little of Master’s outfit when she was brought to his home. So she spoke out as she resisted the urge to point at his clothes* (Nami) Preeeetttyyyyy *Meanwhile at the bar, the bartender would nod while Baldrick turned and carried on his dilly dallying.. the bartender would fidget and fumble.. trying to decide as to what exactly was their finest ale… did they actually have a ‘finest ale’? she shook her head before pulling out a bottle and mug.. taking the coins in turn as she presented the drink to the customer* Barkeep) Umm.. here you go sir… I hope this satisfies your thirst.. and thank you for buying a drink at the Moose and Squirrel *she spoke up with a soft smile before looking to see if there were other potential customers*

CharlotteCarrendar: – How so much could change in the blink of an eye it seemed. The lovers would seat at the dining table in Charlotte’s Manor, enjoying the breakfast that Raziel had preprared in his pvc like apron. Charlotte was more interested in staring at him, then reading any morning paper, and she had to remind herself, that though she could quite easily drag him back to her room for some more alone time, she knew they had people at the Moose and Squirrel. Probably wondering where on earth the pair had gotten too. (Charlotte)”After I clear up…lets go back to the Moose. I want Baldrick to hear the good news.” -she hadn’t begun to think of what young Nami would say…and frankly she didn’t care. She had her claim made, and no amount of “Preeeettttyyy” was going to change that.

RazielZerati: *Raz nodded as he smiled in thought.. head tilted as he ate only a mere fraction of what he prepared for Charlotte.. he already had his meal last night.. he of course would note that she was very pleased with the results of his cooking.. especially since he had not used a kitchen like that one in quite some time.. of course he had to agree with Char in that it would be good to go back to the Tavern and discuss things.. including talking to Nami about setting herself up there… she’d be happy yet sad but with Charlotte staking her claim, the poor girl would end up killed if she stayed around him for too long.. so he would then nod once more before speaking* Aye we shall go back.. though I suspect Baldrick may already be aware… I mean we’ve been gone for a day and a half… I’m surprised a search party didn’t come crashing through the door while we were at it… *this brought a cheeky grin to him as the thought of the scene playing out in his head amused him greatly*

CharlotteCarrendar: – The idea of a search party had her nearly choke on her bacon, and she had watery eyes as she reached for her warter glass, and took a sip, placing it down, her plate almost licked clean. She had to resist the urge to just do him on the kitchen table, but…maybe tommorow morning. So she hastily cleared away the dishes, filling the dishwasher and turning it on, before coming out and swatting Raziel on the backside. (Charlotte)”Race you.” -she teased, and she ran out down the hallway, opening the door and heading off down the frozen snow path, then up the road towards the Moose. Charlotte’s laughter could be heard, her black ponytail swishing behind her, as she finally made it to the lamp post outside the Inn, but did she beat him back there?

RazielZerati: *Not long after charlotte was choking, he would stand in concern but see she was going to be ok… he chuckled as he then tilted his head and he would soon blink in surprise as he felt a hand slap his ass… obviously payback from before as he gave chase, now without weapons nor a shirt on for that matter, he would be much lighter without weapons like the BaraKoutetsu.. he was easily able to keep up with Charlotte and he was right behind her as she approached the lamp post, arms outstretched to capture the woman and sling her over his shoulder as he grinned and gave a laugh for the first time in centuries.. with each step taken, if he caught her and put her on his shoulder, he would be spanking her lightly for each step taken towards the door before putting her down and giving her a deep kiss*

CharlotteCarrendar: – Being lifted up into the air, and placed upon his shoulders had her laughing so much, she tried to cover his eyes with her hands, as he smacked her backside each step till reaching the front of the Inn. Lifting her off and placeing her down, bending in to kiss her deeply, she returned it with gusto, as the door to the Inn would open and Baldrick would see them for the first time, locking lips and moving hips- (Baldrick)”ABOUT BLOODY TIME, I KNEW IT…YOU TWO HAVE BEEN OFF MAKING LITTLEUNS. TIS A DAY TO CELEBRATE!!” He started to do an irish jig, as Nami came up alongside Baldrick to see, then looked up to see her Master and the Prime Minister kissing in the street. The Innkeeper saw the shocked look on Nami’s face, and then came up and tapped her shoulder, gently persuading her to go and serve more customers, which she did so….reluctantly at first. Every so often, looking back whistfully. The love of his mind, was now the love of his heart.

RazielZerati: *Raziel continued to push deep into the kiss.. already he could feel Char grinding her hips against him… but the door opening and Baldrick screaming out would bring a grin to his face.. cutting the kiss off as he went to look.. only to see him and Nami there.. Nami looking shocked to see this happen.. of course he hoped he didn’t crush her with this.. he was her master after all.. and he was not the one for her.. so as she went off reluctantly, he wrapped an arm around Char’s shoulders and held her close as he walked in.. smiling to Baldrick as he smirked* Yes well just be sure not to tell her brother… he already looked like he wanted me dead anyway *with that he chuckled before looking down to Charlotte with a tender gaze* but yeah… we’re together now… and thats the way it is going to stay…

CharlotteCarrendar: – The happy couple would enter the Moose to a rousing cheer that came up from all the patrons, the workers, the staff, the Innkeeper, all led by Baldrick of course, who was smiling from ear to ear. Charlotte snuggled into Raziel as they walked through, a litte red colour in her cheeks from the huge reception they received. Baldrick started handing out business cards and declaring it was HE that got them together and was now Lorewall’s leading match maker. Every so often in the back of the crowd, Nami would peek out from behind the bulky construction workers, looking on in silence, her eyes downcast, but stealing looks, her heart a little heavier. She turned to get a fresh pot of coffee when she happened to nearly run into Pic. Now if you knew the history of Lacardis, Pic was known as Pic, cause he was once a mute, and all he knew to do was pick his nose, rather than speak. He now was a handsome business man in Nixagris, having a series of hardware stores and did a roaring trade in lumber sales from his plantations in the East. He took one look at Nami and his heart melted. He took a flower out of his lapel and placed it in her plait. Nami touched her hair and smiled at Pic, who then said- (Pic)”Pretty.”

RazielZerati: *Raziel continued to hold Char to him as he looked around.. this was something he was far from used to.. but he supposed he had to get over it.. from what Char told him in the night, he had been screened on TV while washing in the river.. so the entire land of Nemaeus and other places probably know his face as ‘the sexy river blond’ or something like that. Never the less he looked back down to Charlotte as he spoke to her* Well.. looks like this will be front page news when we go back to Lorewall huh? *He did used to be a king among other things… but he has unsure if he would be ready for modern media and publicity.. but if it’s the price to stay with Char… guess he could do with dealing with a number of people knowing his name*

CharlotteCarrendar: – The innkeeper then got up on a stool and tried to calm the crowd, his arms waving as though he was running for President- (Inn Keeper)”Alright settle down folks… we are Nixagreans….and we know that people don’t like the fuss and bother. Now lets let our Prime Minister and her beau, enjoy some Moose hospitality.”- Someone would slam their hand on the jukebox, and the first song to come on was. “Build me up Buttercup” and this had people getting up to dance, including the newest couple in Nixagris….Pic and Nami, who were both dancing awkwardly in the back corner, far from the crowd. (Charlotte)”Welcome to my home town.” -she whispered, as Baldrick danced on past them-

RazielZerati: *He would blink at the way things suddenly went from chaos to a party… quite the thin line of difference there was… so this was her home town.. curious indeed.. from there he would turn and face Charlotte.. wrapping his arms around her waist as he stared down to her* Perhaps in due time.. I could get used to this sort of thing… normally in a place like this I’m scoping out a target to kill… or doing bartender work as undercover.. *with that he would lean down and place his head against hers.. softly smiling as he held her to him.. then slowly his words would ring out to her* I guess… when things develop.. I could have you meet the others..

CharlotteCarrendar: – Looking at the couple as they were still just standing to the right of the dining area, they seemed like the only two people in each other’s world, speaking softly to each other, as the merriement of the Moose and Squirrel continued. The bar was opened, and it was a certainty that many would be late for work this day. The Innkeeper finally came over to burst their bubble, and asked- (InnKeenper)”Ravashawn tells me that you be the Master of the fair Nami. Sir, I would like to offer her a steady job, room with board, as well as a good wage. She is a fine worker and I think she does fit in well with this crowd. Even Mr Pic has taken to her, and we all know how fussy he is. How do we make the arrangements, Sir, so she may stay here permanently?”

I feel like such an idiot. I’ve never had as many food flub-ups as I’ve had over the last two weeks: going to places only to find out when I got there that they were closed for renovation, finding out after I was seated that an a la carte wasn’t available and that apparently, it was only all-you-can-eat (thankfully, I was able to explain the situation and exit as gracefully as I could), and finally, that certain meals were only available during certain parts of the day and unfortunately, not the part of day I was there!

Which brings me to Veggielicious. I was over the moon excited when I found out about Veggielicious. I skipped out on both Winterlicious and Summerlicious this past year so I was hell bent on getting in at least two Veggielicious meals. I pored over all the menus and promotions, made my choices, and was raring to go. Little did I know that I would end up feeling like an absolute fool over it. For months now I’ve wanted to try E.L. Ruddy. Vegetarian brunch? All over it like peanut butter on jelly! What better time to try them out than during Veggielicious? My heart sunk to the soles of my feet though when I found out last week that their Veggielicious special was a dinner-only special. I was there at 11am when they opened. And I made the same mistake yesterday when I tried to make up for my Veggielicious booboo at another destination.

I wanted to cry.

Here I was, jibber-jabbering about Veggielicious on the blog, on Ate by Ate’s Facebook page, and to people in general, and in the end? Nothing to show for it. I’m so sorry guys. This will teach me a lesson for the future to cover my bases a little more carefully, that’s for sure.

BUT! There’s always a but! Just as I was about to start weeping over my stupidity and rotten luck, I had a light bulb moment. Here I was feeling so dumb over my oversight that I wasn’t appreciating what was right in front in me. Sure, I was incredibly disappointed about not being able to do Veggielicious but I had a whole menu of other amazing food choices to take advantage of, ones that would tie into the Fall Harvest Series, Veggie Eats, and Weekend Brunch series perfectly. And in the end, I’m posting about great, permanent menu items that can be enjoyed any time, not just during a once-a-year food fest. So, I’m not feeling as heartbroken about it anymore because I have some fabulous food stuff to show you all!

E.L. Ruddy, located at 1371 Dundas Street West, serves vegetarian and vegan brunch on the weekends with a seasonal item and special introduced to the menu every week. The cafe is cozy, artistic, and eclectic with its 70s style tables, bright orange paint, exposed brick walls, floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, and cute dining and table accessories like sugar pots with collectible spoons! It’s a small space (less than 20 people at a time, folks!) with a very dedicated menu that caters to both savoury and sweet tastebuds and cravings: simple scrambled eggs or marinated tofu with home fries, salad, and toast; eggs or tofu with beans, salsa, and homemade corn bread; granola with the works (wheat-free rolled oats, quinoa flakes, dried fruit, and so much more; spelt waffles with sweet marinated strawberries, maple syrup, and whipped cream, and more.

It’s a menu that really speaks to the diversity of vegetarian, vegan, and/or gluten-free food by utilizing seasonal ingredients and wholesome foods. There’s a real sense of warmth and comfort in their food that just makes you happy when you look at it and when you eat it. And, menu prices are tax inclusive! If it says $12, it’s $12 flat. I have to tell you, that makes everyone’s life a whole lot easier when you’re calculating the bill! Menu prices are $7-$13 for main dishes, $4 for brunch cocktail specials, and $1 for substitutions and/or additions.

For this brunch meal, I did something pretty unorthodox: I ordered something sweet potato and something rosemary. Now, I’d like to think of myself as a non picky eater and pretty easy going with my food choices. I write a food blog after all! But there are things that I don’t enjoy as much. And sweet potatoes and rosemary are two such things! Why did I choose something with both then?! I saw the omelette with maple-roasted sweet potatoes, rosemary, and aged cheddar with home fries, salad, and toast ($12) and I didn’t want to shy away from it simply because it contained things I normally didn’t love to pieces. It sounded like such a delicious dish and it was so perfect for the Fall Harvest Series, so I dove into it. And I was not disappointed in the least!

My green mixed salad was topped with a handful of roasted pumpkin seeds and I substituted the toast with the homemade corn bread. I fell SO in love with it and it completely made my tastebuds appreciate sweet potato and rosemary in a whole new light. I always felt like sweet potato and rosemary were both too woody in taste and in some cases, a little bland. This omelette was delicious though and the egg complemented the flavours so well! I got savouriness, cheesiness, warmth, comfort, crunch, everything. I loved the pumpkin seeds with the salad, the home fries (potato coins) were so moist and yummy, and the corn bread? Out of this world!

I know there are quite a few people who adore the corn bread from Fresh and while Fresh is one of my favourite places to eat, theirs has nothing on the corn bread here at E.L. Ruddy! The corn bread here is amazing. It’s moist with that signature crumbly, corn grit texture that makes it so yummy without being too crumbly. It holds its shape well and together with the salad and pumpkin seeds, it tasted extra fabulous.

While I’m still sad that I missed out on some terrific Veggielicious specials, I’m happy that I was still able to fully enjoy a space and its delicious food for the first time. I’m excited to come back for more, I’m excited to see what other seasonal yummies they’ll have to offer as the months go on, and I’m definitely looking forward to more of that corn bread! Vegetarian and vegan brunch is something I love posting and writing about and the fact that it fits into the Fall Harvest Series so nicely is win-win for me, Veggielicious or not.

Did you every wonder about your first memories? I am sitting here tonight trying to figure out who was the first person to wake me from a deep sleep. I have never been a person to dread getting up in the morning. Maybe that was because in the Watkins family you only got called one time. If you went back to sleep, no one would bother to call you again. But, there would be serious consequences when you did wake up. I remember someone telling me, “I am calling you one time and no more.” I don’t think I ever tested the system to evaluate whether the hard consequences would be worth the extra time on the soft pillow. I figure being called to “Rise and Shine” is one of my first memories. But back to the “getting up” call, my first thought is that my Dad used the phrase to stir me to roll out bright and early to go do my chores before breakfast. Country boys had a number of jobs to do before we could return to the kitchen for Mom’s crisp bacon, floating fried eggs, and toast.

“Rise, Shine, Hit the Deck, Let’s Hear Those Little Feet Go Pitty-Pat” were probably amended Navy words. The “hit the deck” is a dead give away. I think Grandpa Watkins probably learned those words during his service in World War I.

They sound sort of mellow for the Navy, but maybe Grandpa watered the phrase down a bit. Maybe the original was something like “Get your lazy skinny buns out of the bunk, you will be on the deck in five.” I don’t remember my Grandpa telling me about the background of the phrase, but I am reasonably certain that Dad learned it from him. That is the way I like to remember it—I was probably the third generation to use it with my kids. Maybe my boys, David and Steven, will carry on the tradition…there is no better way to wake up.

Lesson for Life: Time is short, but for me it is longer in the morning. And, if I am going to have a devotional time with God to read the scriptures and to pray, it needs to happen in the a.m. when God gets the best I have to offer.

Theses next two posts are dedicated to all vegetarians and vegans who skip the turkey on Thanksgiving and instead opt for yummy, filling vegetarian dishes full of fall flavour, vegetables, fruits, beans, nuts, and more! I had one of the best weekend brunches last week and I’m actually surprised at how much I enjoyed it just because it involved a vegetable that I can kind of take or leave most of the time. I’m so happy to be adding this one to the Veggie Eats category on the blog since it’s fall-inspired and perfect for the Fall Harvest Series! Up until this point, I don’t think I’ve posted anything particularly fall seasonal as far as vegetarian and vegan brunches go so I’d love to highlight some menu items around the city some of you might be interested in checking out for the season for the next Confessions of a Brunch-Obsessed Foodie segment. Enjoy the photos – full post and write-up coming tomorrow!

Reine the lovely Afghan hound certainly got her beauty sleep! But was it enough? If you’re having a tough time waking up today, like Reine, read on!

Here are some tips and tricks to get yourself awake and ready for the day:

Drink a cool glass of water in the morning. The cool temperature will wake you up and the water will kickstart your metabolism making you wake up faster.

Exercise in the morning! A brisk jog or bike ride in the morning air will waken your body and give you more energy for the following day as you improve your fitness.

Don’t drink coffee everyday. You’re body will be accustomed to the effects of caffeine. Save the coffee for those days you really need it!

Don’t Snooze! Snoozing the alarm clock can often make you more tired than if you wake up when your alarm first goes off.

Get pumped! Find something to get excited about today to get you motivated to get moving.

Every time I think of salad, I laugh to myself as I think of the episode of the Simpsons when Lisa becomes a vegetarian and the scene with Bart, Homer, and Marge dancing in a little conga line chanting, “you don’t win friends with sa-lad! You don’t win friends with sa-lad!” with Lisa scowling on the couch. Oh, Simpsons, how you fit into every aspect of my life. We know the truth though: salads kick butt and some are so much more worthy than their appetizer and side status at the meal table. One of my all-time favourite salads is a tomato salad with fresh bufala mozzarella or bocconcini cheese with basil or a caprese salad. Slices of tomato and cheese, cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes, it doesn’t matter. All that matters is that there is basil, the tomatoes are juicy and sweet, and the cheese is soft and melt-in-your-mouth delightful. I love it with a really great olive oil but a sweet and tangy balsamic works just fine too.

Source: the-rivalry.com

I’ll never forget the day I found out about bocconcini cheese. I was still in university doing my undergrad and I was with a coworker at the flower shop I used to work at and it was dinnertime. She had brought a whole container of bocconcini to nosh on and I looked over, was curious, and asked her what she was eating. She told me bocconcini cheese and gushed about how great it was with tomato salad. And from that day on, I was in love with bocconcini cheese, buying it from the supermarket to have on hand for snacks and salads at home, and looking out for any bocconcini or bufala mozzarella cheese menu items at restaurants. All that time this wonderful cheese was absent from my life and now I can’t imagine my life without it! I am such a cheese fanatic and this is definitely one of my favourite varieties. And here to deliver a fantastic caprese salad bursting with tomatoes and soft fresh cheese is The Commissary!

Their caprese salad is part of all 3 menus (brunch, lunch, and dinner) and comes in both main ($8) and side ($6) portions. Oh my gosh, trust me when I say that you need to disregard this salad as merely a side and always, ALWAYS order it as a main. I mean, if you can. And want to. You should! I had mine as a separate side and thought, “holy bejesus I could eat this endlessly!” and vowed that the next time I was there, I would have their caprese salad as a main with a side of The Commissary’s breakfast potatoes to go with it!

This caprese screams fresh and juicy. The multicoloured grape tomatoes and bocconcini are covered in delicious pesto, sweet and tangy balsamic, and a fresh as air chiffonade of basil. What makes this salad is the fresh cheese and, combined with the balsamic and basil, it is over the moon delicious! I felt like I was having bocconcini for the first time all over again, only 10 times more amazing! I could not believe how soft and melt-in-your-mouth it was. I barely even had to chew because it was that soft. And I loved how they weren’t skimpy on the cheese either! This is the real deal and while the cheese I’ve had at the supermarket was good, this blows everything out of the water.

It’s a great variation of the traditional sliced tomatoes and fresh mozzarella salad and if my love for this salad and their baby arugula and mango salad with goat cheese salad is any indication, I’m not just friends with salad, I’m kind of bffs with it.

I promised you all a weekend brunch post from the west end so I’m here to deliver! After doin

I promised you all a weekend brunch post from the west end so I’m here to deliver! After doing a lot of exploring in Leslieville over the past month, I thought it would be nice to switch things up and have some fun on Dundas West, specifically in Brockton Village! I still remember that crazy day a year and a half ago in April when I decided to be spontaneous and walk the entire length of Dundas West from Keele to Spadina (um, hello, over 5 km!), stopping at King’s Cafe for lunch, watching snow flurries flying around in the sky from the window, and completely zonking out on the streetcar and subway ride back.

And since that day, I have loved Dundas West, Brockton Village, and all the neighbouring areas for its aesthetic and character (Dundas West is home to some of the most beautiful graffiti artwork in the city) and of course, for its food! I know some parts of the strip are a little industrial and “middle of nowhere”, but little gems still sparkle beneath that steely exterior and really, once you hit Lansdowne going eastbound, there is so much to see and explore in terms of specialty food shops, bakeries, and great eateries. And Brockton General is one of them!

I found out about Brockton General from Where Toronto magazine many moons ago, immediately looked them up online, and kept them on my brunch hitlist for months. It was their stewed fruit French toast menu item that made me squeal in the beginning! This month I finally made my way here on a Sunday morning, sat down on one of their sweet wooden chairs at one of their pretty outdoor wooden tables and enjoyed one of the most relaxing, delicious, memorable brunch meals EVER. With a light breeze, a clear sky, and a peaceful atmosphere, this meal at Brockton General epitomized what a Sunday morning brunch should always be. Their cafe is so sweet and cute with so much vintage and romantic flair. Little sugar pots, tiny vases of flowers on the ledge, vintage prints on the exposed brick wall, linen napkins, pretty porcelain dishes with floral prints, and even an antique spoon collection on the wall to boot!

Even though the space isn’t monstrously big, there’s a decent amount of seating with tables for four and two all over, so as long as you get there not too long after they open, there shouldn’t be an issue with line-ups. Then again, there was a steady stream of people coming in when I was there on a Sunday morning (couples and groups of friends), so to cover your butt, show up soon after they open to be on the safe side. The food is so delicious here I wouldn’t be surprised if I was proven wrong about the line-ups!

The wonderfully unique thing about Brockton General is their menu and I’m not even talking about their food or dishes persay here; I’m talking about their constant changing menu. The menu that changes EVERY WEEK. No joke! Brockton General’s brunch menu changes every week, highlighting seasonal ingredients and whatever creative concoctions they might come up with. I LOVE that. I know that it can be bad if there’s a menu item you just adore to pieces and you’re not sure if it’ll come back or not, but just think of all the amazing different dishes you can try with an evolving menu like theirs. The menu might feature similar types of dishes week to week, but with different ingredients or different sides. And I’m happy to report that there are always vegetarian options!

In addition to classic breakfasts like bacon and eggs (their chalkboard sign out front says ”magical bacon forest!”), eggs benny, and French toast with seasonal fruit and maple syrup, Brockton General’s menu specialities include omelettes with yummy seasonal vegetables (cauliflower puree with green beans, salad greens and toast – I have never seen anybody do omelettes with cauliflower! And green beans? Amazing!,), breakfast sandwiches (English muffins, fried eggs, pork loin, different cheeses, homefries and salad), and sausage or veggie hash with veggie gravy, fried egg and toast. On top of that, they have a number of different small meals (rye berry salad, granola with fruit and yogurt) and sides (bacon and/or pork loin, homefries, and so on) that you can pair with your main and a drink for a Brockton General price fixe! Prices for mains come in at $11-$13, but if you choose a drink, the granola, soup, or salad, and a main, it’s $18 any time and all the time!

My brunch meal: smoked trout cake with a poached egg, remoulade, salad, and toast ($13). I never say no to fish and seafood cakes! I love crab cakes and salmon cakes and wish I could eat them more often. This totally and completely satisfied my desire for fish cakes though and I am still reeling from the wow factor of this brunch meal! The poached egg was perfect (thin egg white skin with a runny yellow yolk on the inside), the toast was perfect and crunchy (I couldn’t believe how excited I was about how good the toast tasted!), the salad was beyond fresh and bright and delicious, and the smoked trout cake? Heavenly and mind-blowingly delicious!

Let’s talk about the salad first though. Now, I loooove green salad with a simple olive oil and vinegar dressing as much as the next perso. Heck, I could have that every day. But when you’re in the face of REALLY GOOD salad with more than just greens, it makes you appreciate it that much more. Brockton General’s salad that day was a mix of baby arugula and mixed greens, sliced red onion, and – wait for this – fennel and edamame! I love edamame so, so much and was squealing (on the inside) about it througout my meal. And the fennel! I think this was the first time I truly tasted fennel. I have read about its licorice taste more times than I can count and I finally felt like I understood firsthand. It was a beautiful and definitely unique from other places.

The smoked trout cake was just bang-on fabulous. First off, as soon as I cut into it, steamed billowed out. So fresh, so good. It was wonderfully flaky and soft with the most flavourful, smoky interior of flaked fish and green onion with a golden brown crisp exterior. You have to eat it to get the full effect of the smoky flavour. The menu was not lying when it said smoked trout! It was smoky with a hint of heat and it was almost as if you could taste it straight off the fire. It was so savoury and the smokiness just envelopes your tastebuds and lingers as you continue eating. That’s how bold it is. It was a flavour my tastebuds had never come across before and it paired perfectly with their cool, creamy, delicious remoulade sauce! I wish I had a whole ramekin of this sauce. Generally made with mayo, mustard, garlic, and spices (and sometimes hot sauce), the sauce completed the fish cake so well.

From the get-go, all I could think of when I was here was how much I wanted to bring my best friend, my mum, and my boyfriend here to eat. And all my friends. And anyone who just loves food and brunch. My unforgettable brunch on that clear Sunday morning confirmed it.

*****

Brockton General is located at 1321 Dundas Street West between Ossington Ave. and Dufferin Street. They are open from Wednesday to Sunday (closed Mondays and Tuesdays), with dinner hours Wednesday through Saturday (6pm-10pm on Wednesday, 6pm-11pm Thursday through Saturday), and weekend brunch hours on Sunday from 10:30am-3pm.

Sisters. We love them, they make us crazy, they tell us when we’ve gotten really unflattering

Sisters. We love them, they make us crazy, they tell us when we’ve gotten really unflattering haircuts . . . for good or for ill, they’re a mainstay. And if yours is anything like mine, they might as well be an extension of your upper body. You’re really just thatclose.

Such is the way with Meghan and Bridget Fitzmaurice, a sisterly duo who, on the surface, couldn’t be more dissimilar. Meghan is a powerhouse in the vein of Katie Couric who continuously entreats viewers to “rise and shine” on the morning talk show circuit. A New York-based celebrity whose red hair attracts as much attention as her hard-hitting interviews, Meghan is a go-getter with a seemingly successful marriage and devoted college-bound son.

On the flip side is Bridget, a caustic but warmhearted social worker who works at a women’s shelter in the Bronx. Ostensibly single when she’s not with her on- and off-again boyfriend, an older police detective, Bridget finds solace in her work and friendships. She’s very close to Meghan’s son, Leo, and acts as a surrogate parent when his own mother and father are too busy — or too flighty — to catch up with him.

When Meghan utters an inexcusable phrase — at least in the eyes of the FTC — via a live mic just before a commercial break, her carefully cultivated image (and job) are on the line. The Fitzmaurice sisters must band together to overcome a sudden onslaught of controversy and change — and hope they’ll emerge mostly unscathed. Together.

Anna Quindlen’s Rise and Shine, published in 2006, was my first introduction to this popular author. I was drawn by the description of a powerful woman who stands in contrast to her relatively unknown little sister — two women doing important things, even if one isn’t known outside the shelter where she gets impoverished mothers and children out of danger. And it didn’t hurt that Meghan and I share a name (though I keep typing Megan).

Quindlen’s story of one sister’s fall while the other rises kept my attention and broke my heart. Though I found myself spitting mad at some of the plot twists, Quindlen’s love letter to New York City — and two of its inhabitants — rang true for me.

First, Bridget. Lady is a spitfire. If there’s anything I like in a narrator, it’s someone willing to offer a no-holds-barred glimpse into their life. Where Meghan seems to “have it easy,” being a celebrity and all, Bridget muddles through each day with its abused kids and bureaucracy. Though outsiders might see Bridget as the one with the “tougher” job, especially as she gets none of Meghan’s glory, it’s obvious that Bridget doesn’t really feel that way about her sister. Meghan’s grueling schedule, professional woes and issues make her life unenviable most of the time . . . that is to say, unenviable to me. And Bridget. I liked that Bridge didn’t crucify or revere her sister . . . that she could present both her flaws and highlights. Don’t most of us feel that way?

Meghan herself was a bit more of an enigma, especially when stuff really starts to go down. I alternated between wanting to hug and slug her. No one could fault her for uttering a few choice words about a TV guest, a philanderer who has the nerve to appear with his pregnant girlfriend. The only trouble was the fact that said words were muttered as millions of Americans dipped a spoon into their morning yogurt. After the brouhaha, I really felt for Meghan — until she ran from her problems. As her marriage hits the skids, I wanted her to walk up and face Evan . . . the way she’s faced so many other things. Still, I couldn’t completely fault her for some of her choices; it just wasn’t a great situation. Period.

Quindlen makes some points about fame vs. the everyday worker, New York vs. the rest of the world. Though I got them, they didn’t make the story for me. At its heart is a tale of two sisters who have always been Fitzmaurice Against The World. After the death of their parents, Meghan tended to a young Bridget during her formative years . . . and that bond is unbreakable. As the story progresses and things get worse, the pair must depend on one another to get through it all. And Quindlen’s message about sisters — how crazy they make us; how much we love them — feels very authentic.

Lovers of women’s fiction and stories exploring the dynamics of family and friendship will find Rise and Shine to be an entertaining, memorable story. It was interesting, heartbreaking — so many things rolled into one. I listened to it on audio and didn’t want it to end.

Maybe it’s the late night munchie cravings talking, but I could really go for some good old fashioned bacon and eggs. It’s after 10pm on my side of the pond though so I really don’t think it’d be a good idea to haul out the frying pan to soothe that craving right now, so the next best thing? Counting down another 5 weekend brunch spots on my brunch club hit list! Lately, and even throughout the summer, I’ve been focusing more heavily on the east end with posts on Joy Bistro and The Commissary in Leslieville, Simple Bistro on Mount Pleasant, and Hammersmith’s in Riverdale, and I realized that I really owe the west end some more love! From Ossington Village to The Junction, here are 5 eateries I can’t wait to eventually get to!

The Beet Organic Cafe – located at 2945 Dundas Street West, west of Keele St. and east of Pacific Ave. at the corner of Medland St. in The Junction. One of these days, I will follow through on my plan to go to The Beet after a farmers’ market trek to the Junction Market on a Saturday morning! It’s only a matter of time. My first brush with The Beet was when I made my unforgettable first trip to Bunner’s Bake Shop down the road during last year’s Veggielicious. It was then that I realized what a goldmine of a foodie district I was in – an organic, raw, vegetarian, and vegan one in particular! I never did get around to re-writing my Junction Foodie District post that got sucked into the internet black hole, but I’m totally committed to doing more food things in the neighbourhood and one of them is brunch at The Beet!

A foodie fixture in The Junction

With a focus and commitment to using as many local, Canadian, seasonal, and organic ingredients, The Beet’s menu has items for both carnivores and veggies alike. My picks: the Huevos Rancheros ($12) starring two baked eggs with Quebec cheddar, sweet potato mash, sour cream, pico de gallo, and avocado, all on an Ontario corn tortilla; Farmer’s Harvest Salad ($7 sm., $10 lrg.) featuring green and red leaf lettuce, Chef’s selection of seasonal veggies, pumpkin seeds, and a choice of dressing; and the Buenos Dias Wrap ($13, wheat and gluten-free!) stuffed with avocado, spicy black bean spread, quinoa, pico de gallo, and raw Quebec cheddar. Oh! And we can’t forget their truckload of fresh fruit, nut, and milk smoothie options as well!

Cuban & Latin American Sunday morning munchies await you!

Delux – located at 92 Ossington Ave., between Queen and Dundas Street West. Name 3 spots in the ciy, off the top of your headd, where you can get Central, South, and/or Latin American-inspired brunch and lunch. Having a hard time, right? We can easily tick off our options for vegetarian, Italian, and traditional greasy spoon, but South, Central, and Latin American morning meal options are a little harder to come by. Which is why Delux is extra special! I thought their lunch menu during my first visit back in the spring was amazing, with their thick-as-bricks delicious sandwiches and gobsmackingly good coffee crème brûlée, but when I found out they offered Sunday Cuban brunch, I think I stared at my computer in awe and wonder with my mouth gaping open for a good few minutes.

Their Sunday brunch menu embodies warmth, heartiness, and comfort food with no shortage of sweet and savoury Cuban and South American flavour! My picks: the dulce de leche smothered French toast with bananas, chantilly cream and maple syrup ($10), the big Cuban breakfast featuring roast pork, poached eggs, rice and beans, tostones (crispy fried plantains), and salad ($14), and the duck confit picadillo ($12) (Cuban style ground beef and veggies) hash with sunnyside up eggs and tostones!

Good morning, guava!

The Good Fork Brunch & Bistro – located at 2432 Bloor Street West and Jane St. in Bloor West Village. Oh gosh, The Good Fork is the quintessential brunch and breakfast diner with an honest-to-goodness menu to die for! I urge everyone to go. I know I haven’t been yet and I’m basing this urgency on, well, nothing really, but seriously, I just have the most fantastical feeling about this place and I cannot wait to go! C’mon, they have red velvet pancakes. YES, THAT’S RIGHT. Red velvet paaaaancakes. I may not be the biggest fan of red velvet (don’t throw things at me now), but heck, even I know that a dish like that will get people to come in droves. My picks: the Deep Green Benny ($11.25) boasting fried green tomatoes and cilantro; Lemon Cheese Pancakes ($9.75) bursting with lemon ricotta and blueberry compote; Baleek Omelette ($10) made with bacon and leeks; Bruleed Pound Cake French Toast with Orange Butter ($10.75) – total self-explanatory in yum factor.

Mildred’s Temple Kitchen – located at 85 Hanna Ave. off of King Street West, east of Dufferin St. in Liberty Village. I’ve read about Mildred’s Temple Kitchen. I’ve heard about it. I’ve drooled over its famous brunch menu offerings. Doesn’t it just make sense then to just go and stuff my face?! I think so. Famed for her first born restaurant, Mildred Pierce, culinary expertise in both food and cookbook writing, and for her presence in the kitchen, chef Donna Dooher doles out the simple pleasures of brunch and dining in her scrumptious menu: the infamous fluffy blueberry buttermilk pancakes ($13.50); Mildred’s poached eggs on a flakey croissant with either smoked salmon or rosemary bacon smothered in béarnaise sauce with mixed greens; Mildred’s sourdough grilled cheese with pickles and tomato relish ($12); and Green Eggs and Ham!

There are plenty of other brunch spots on my hit list, but these are the ones I wanted to showcase in particular today and if all goes well this weekend with the weather, I just might hit one of them up.

I’m not really sure what it means to walk on water.

But, the closest I’ve ever seen, with my own eye, was this photo I took at sunrise last week. The deck is just the right color. The sun is at the right angle.

Justin looks like he is almost walking on water.

If walking on water is just an analogy for an impossible act, or a miracle of sorts, then I am believer.

Miracles can happen. I can’t explain them, but I know one when I see one — or rather, feel one.

Sometimes, I sit back in awe at what seems to be the most amazing miracle of all — that huge orb in the sky rising up over the horizon for another chance at another day. One more opportunity to shine.

It’s kind of inspiring isn’t it?
The fact that the sun simply rises.

It’s a comforting feeling really. Never fear, the sun will rise.

It almost makes me feel like I can walk on water.
Rise and shine.

We got up super early this weekend to go to local car boot sales and vintage markets it was the perfect day for sifting through the hundreds of stalls. We had a fantastic haul picking up some great pieces, our favourite being the art deco coffee cup, it’s such a stunning piece. I have only shown a few of our finds above including a lovely paisley print Dunhill bow tie, a travel alarm and 60′s tortoiseshell sun glasses which I personally would rather keep for myself. All of these pieces are available on our Etsy shop.

Coconut granola, pulled pork eggs benny, and lemon ricotta pancakes with blueberries – what can I say? With a menu that boasts dishes like these, and after my fabulous first visit to Joy Bistro in Leslieville, I was really happy going back to the sweet and breezy eatery on Queen East for seconds! Joy Bistro really does make you feel, well, joyous! Whether you’re out on the airy patio or relaxing inside with the sunlight streaming in through the windows, being here makes you feel like you’re truly enjoying time off during your weekend brunch meal.

You see everyone else around you sharing plates of food, digging into their large brunch dishes, slicing into pancakes, French toast, and eggs, spearing a piece of peameal onto their fork, and sipping Caesars by the bar and you feel their joy just bursting out. I’ve been told that I look so happy when I eat. As funny and silly as that sounds in a way (it makes me snort with giggles) I understand where it’s coming from because I see the enjoyment on people’s faces when I glance at others around me and it’s the joy of being around the people you love and the joy of having great, delicious food right in front of you.

And if you can believe it, my second meal here was even more fantastic than the first! Part of me was really leaning toward the lemon ricotta pancakes, but I was also incredibly curious about the coconut granola ($8.50) with sesame, pumpkin, and sunflower seeds with fruit and maple syrup. I know, I eat yogurt parfaits at home. But that’s like saying, “hmm, I bake cookies, I’ll never buy another cookie outside again!” As simplistic a dish may be, I feel it’s always worth checking out because everyone prepares and presents their dishes differently. And let’s face it, when the professionals do what they do best, it’s second to none and so darn good.

I was absolutely delighted and floored when my coconut granola and yogurt was brought out. Absolutely in awe. You should have seen my face. I probably looked like a little one seeing her birthday cake with candles come out for the first time! I’m not really sure what I was expecting. Maybe a glass with yogurt and granola layers. Maybe a bowl. Never did I expect my sweet, fruit, crunchy, yummy coconut granola to come in a giant glass jar with snap lid! It was SO cute and adorable! Something you’d see from a country kitchen and house out of House on the Prairie or something! I couldn’t believe how sweet the presentation was!

Food and treats in jars are all the rage right now. Remember my sweet little strawberry shortcake custard trifle from Simple Bistro on Mount Pleasant? And all the layered desserts and cookie and baking mixes that DIYers make as gifts and favours? Food in jars has definitely come a long way from its sole association with baby food, that’s for sure! Regardless of the trend factor though, this yogurt and granola brunch scored top-notch points in presentation and in deliciousness.

The coconut granola brunch dish was layered with maple syrup, creamy, mildly sweet vanilla yogurt, granola with oats, various types of seeds, coconut, dried fruit (cranberries and apricots), and tons of fresh fruit including blueberries, sliced bananas, and sliced strawberries. Not only did the whole dish taste fresh and juicy and wholesome, it really showed off how resourceful Joy Bistro was in their usage of food and their waste management.

I know, this is supposed to be about delicious food, not waste! But we all know waste is always part of the equation when we talk about food; it’s not all hearts and daisies. The volume of fruits, vegetables, and dairy is so difficult to manage because of their short shelf life and it really impressed me seeing them use the strawberries, blueberries, and bananas that were present on my banana bread French toast my first time there in another brunch main. You’ll never be able to eliminate waste completely, but using all your ingredients in different ways for different dishes shows your resourcefulness and versatility and a willingness to work with the food in more than one manner.

Their coconut granola yogurt parfait was delicious and terrific. I was floored at how good the vanilla yogurt was. Much of the time, yogurt can come off as too tangy, too watery, too thick, and admittedly, somewhat tasteless. I love yogurt but even I can acknowledge its flaws. Their vanilla yogurt wasn’t any of those things. The sweetness and vanillaness to it was noticeable enough for me to take note and love it, but also perfectly mild enough to let the granola and fruit shine. The fruits were juicy and plump, the granola was crunchy and honey sweet, and the maple syrup was bang on what the parfait needed to make it extra special. I love the dried fruits, I love the seeds, and I loved how the texture of the granola was chunky and crunchy yet also finely crushed and milled in other ways with the coconut and seeds.

Joy Bistro has really become a favourite of mine in the area and it’s only a matter of time before I tick off the eggs benny and pancakes off my brunch list!

*****

Joy Bistro is located at 884 Queen Street East in Leslieville, at the corner of Booth Ave. and Queen East across the street from Jimmie Simpson Park. They serve weekend brunch, lunch, and dinner as well as plenty of drinks at the bar! Hours of operation: Monday-Wednesday 11am-12am midnight, Thursday-Friday 11am-1am, Saturday 8am-1am, and Sunday 8am-12am midnight.

Appearances can be deceiving. There are some places that are decked out to the nines, but their food? Nothing particularly special. And then there are the diamonds in the rough. The no frills, rough around the edges type of establishment with hidden gems and amazing food just waiting to be discovered. The spots that completely take you by surprise in the best way possible because you’d never think, just by looking at them, that they would dish out such magnificent culinary brilliance. And I have my dear friend, Wini, to thank for this latest scumptious epiphany! With all the recent talk of the Vegetarian Food Festival going on at Harbourfront (this weekend y’all!) and the return of Veggielicious, it’s incredibly timely that I would make this post on vegan breakfast and weekend brunch today! Yes, vegan brunch! With veggie brekkie posts on Fresh, Table 17, Lady Marmalade, and Sadie’s Diner, it was due time to add another one to the mix. And is this ever a fabulous one! Make way for vegetarian and vegan brunch comfort food at Disgraceland in Bloorcourt Village!

Disgraceland is what I would describe as a dive bar. If you didn’t see the booths from across the street, you would totally mistake the space for a motorcycle related shop. I sure did. And that’s if you see it at all. It’s easy to miss because you just can’t tell from its exterior that’s a place to gorge on food! And when you come up closer, all you really see is darkness. Until it lights up at night according to Wini. In short, Disgraceland would fit perfectly into Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives in the dive category because they have the look (jukebox, games, bar, booze, booths, diner fare and comfort food!) and they have the food to prove it! My friend Wini told me about Disgraceland after a great dinner out and I quickly looked them up and was delighted to find that they had the full monty of menus on their site. Perfect! I can daydream about what I want to eat when I eventually go! And there was certainly plenty of options to consider including meat, vegetarian, and vegan dishes. A triple threat of a weekend brunch and dinner spot!

Disgraceland’s weekend brunch serves up 11 different dishes with a copious amount of brunch sides to choose from! Prices for mains range from $8-$11 (most coming in at $11), additional sides from $2-$4, and the tax already included in all the prices. They also only accept cash, so keep that in mind if you plan on coming! Disgraceland is SO PERFECT for groups of friends and family with different tastes, preferences, and diets. Not only can you customize your meals with different proteins, you can substitute a number of the items for meat or meatless equivalents. Win-win for everyone! Meat lovers, vegetarians, and vegans can all dine here without feeling like they’re being left out, without feeling like they need to sacrifice, and without feeling like they need to order something they’re really not into just for the sake of having something meaty or meatless.

Not only does their menu cater to different diets, it also caters to different sweet and savoury brunch cravings. We have the savoury English breakfast ($11) with eggs, pork or vegan sausage, baked beans, fried tomato, sauteed mushrooms, potatoes, and toast; brekkie burrito ($11) with vegan and non-vegan cheese, proteins, beans, and veggies; eggs benny with strip or vegan bacon and hollandaise over poutine ($11); cinnamon French toas ($8); and a BLT bagel with sides ($9) in both meat and vegan forms!

Because I’m totally smitten with tofu scramble, I pounced on their tofu scramble dish ($9) complete with a scramble of tofu with peppers, onions, spices, black beans, and jalapenos served with crunchy corn chips, fruit, and a choice of breakfast potatoes or greens. Ever since that fateful first tofu scramble at Sadie’s Diner last year, I’ve been completely devoted to scoping out every single last tofu brunch item in the city and I think I’ve done a pretty good job so far! I’m itching to do a tofu brunch post for the Flavour Favourites series, but I’m going to hold off on doing one right now just because I really want to get in a few more dishes before I do a big comprehensive post for it.

I love tofu and I always have, even as a kid. Granted, the way I ate it as a child is vastly different from the way I eat it now. Growing up, my mum would put tofu in our Chinese soup and she would cook it up soft with meat and vegetables. Now I have tofu “deli” slices that I can slap on the grill, egg tofu that you slice in coins, grilled tofu wedges, tofu scramble, you name it. I feel so super fortunate that my soy allergy only extends to milk; I’d be so sad if I couldn’t eat tofu anymore!

There was so much to love about the brunch here and about this dish. You get your money’s worth on fantastic portions, there are so many ways to customize it just the way you like, and the food is just darn good. I loved my tofu scramble because of it how different (and of course, delicious!) it was from other tofu scrambles. Disgraceland’s was almost like a tofu stir-fry scramble with their tofu chunky and cubed with their sauteed vegetables chopped and diced and woven in throughout the entire dish. The flavours were amazing. Because of the cumin and spices, I felt like I was eating something straight out of a Moroccan place, it was so delicious. It was unlike anything I had ever had before and it completely epitomized warmth and comfort. This is definitely a yummy fall and winter type of dish, and combined with the scrumptious corn chips and chunk, starchy, foodgasmic breakfast potatoes, it’s a hearty meal that surprisingly doesn’t leave you feeling like you’re in food coma afterward!

I’m so happy there’s another fantastic vegetarian and vegan brunch eatery in the city for me (and many others!) to go to and the great food here just proves that you don’t have look red-carpet ready to give a star performance.

*****

Disgraceland is located at 965 Bloor Street West in Bloorcourt Village, between Ossington Ave. and Dufferin St. just west of Delaware Ave. They are open only for dinner and weekend brunch from Monday-Friday, 4pm-2am and Saturday-Sunday, 11am-2am. CASH ONLY. You can view their site HERE.

“Jammins” is the best tune on the first Bunny album I ever owned, the dancehall album titled Rootsman Skanking. This album is underrated in my opinion, as I consider it to be one of his best.

I didn’t waste any time, did I? Last week I wrote the 2nd edition of Confessions of a Brunch

I didn’t waste any time, did I? Last week I wrote the 2nd edition of Confessions of a Brunch Obsessed Foodie listing several weekend brunch picks from Leslieville, the land of good food, and *BAM!*, here I am reporting back with a mouthwatering account of The Commissary, one of the three spots I featured in that post. What can I say? I had <del>eating to do</del> errands to run in the east end and The Commissary, with its corner location and big windows facing the street, becknoned me like a little floating magical fairy holding a cupcake. I have to say, I have never pounced on a new discovery so fast. Normally when I find out about a place I’ve never been to, I take a quick photo of it from the outside, “tuck it away” in my mind (or on my computer; these days they might as well be one and the same) and then figure out a good time to make a real visit which often takes me weeks or even months. This time? Within 2 weeks. The menu looked too good to pass up, I wanted to give you all a first-hand look at one of the newer eateries in this part of town, and it just fit into my schedule and my flow of errands. Done and done.

The Commissary, located at Queen Street East and Logan Ave., has only been in business for about half a year but judging from the great crowds, you’d never know it. The place was packed the first time I walked by its front window and door and if you can believe it, I was 2nd in line even before they officially opened their doors for weekend brunch at 10am. It takes a long time for a food business to get its feet wet, especially in a city as food crazy and critical as ours. Trust Torontonians to get into a debate online about cupcakes and it cultural significance! But it truly seems to be thriving in Leslieville because it’s attracting different types of people. You have young-ins, you have girlfriends, you have families with babies, you have the whole kit and caboodle – and everyone is having a great time in a bright, fresh, airy atmosphere.

Now, everyone who writes about The Commissary will discuss the significance of its name – heck, even The Commissary themselves provide definitions of what a commissary is on their website. It’s worth noting though because it really plays into the atmosphere and the feel of the bistro. A commissary can refer to either “a store that sells food and supplies to the personnel or workers in a military post, mining camp, lumber camp, or the like” or “a dining room or cafeteria, especially one in a motion-picture studio”.

In order for the name to make sense, we’re not supposed to take these definitions literally but rather use them to make sense of the surroundings around us and the feelings we have while we’re here. Case in point: the reference to the working class in the first definition speaks to the unpretetnious way food is made here. Read: it’s not fuss and frills. It’s just damn good food and tap water in glass bottles (you have to read what the bottle says, it’ll make you laugh). Even the menu items that scream fancier pants (like my arugula salad with mango salsa and goat cheese crumbles, $5 side) are so simple and fresh and down-to-earth. And the giant side of breakfast potatoes for $3? Soft, starchy, cute, insanely scrumptious, and something straight out of a local greasy spoon diner only not greasy.

Finally, while we foodies aren’t surrounded by red carpets, lights, cameras, and action, you definitely feel like a star dining at a hip and happening hot spot. And it also helps that everyone who passes by will undoubtedly be curious and glance through the windows to take a peek at the hustle and bustle and, you know, your food. Because I sure did! As well, if you take a look at their website, it exudes that old-time Hollywood glamour (I’m looking at you, Fred and Ginger), with black and white photos of old town Toronto and what I’m assuming is old town Leslieville.

The Commissary’s weekend brunch menu is full to bursting with egg breakfasts, breakfast sandwiches, salads, meat mains, vegetarian delights, and plenty of cheesy goodness! The menu is a jack-of-all-trades. Prices range from $7-$12, with breakfast sides coming in at $3-$5.50. Their refreshing salads are available as mains or sides (curried shrimp and melon, caprese, watercress with jicama and Granny Smith apple just to name a few), there are 5 different types of eggs benny including peameal, grilled tomatoes, and applewood smoked bacon and smoked gouda *cue my mouth watering here*, stuffed croissants such as apple compote and brie (OH.MY.GOD) and PB & J, hearty meat dishes (roast beef steak and eggs, lobster and mango salsa, and roast beef and sauteed shrimp surf n’ turf), vegetarian dishes (ratatouille and beans and salsa rancheros), and cheese present in about 3/4 of the dishes. I LOVE IT. I ordered a ridiculous amount of food because I couldn’t walk away knowing I didn’t try a little bit of everything my heart desired and it paid off because it was delicious and I didn’t even feel bogged down afterward.

I was in the mood for some veggies and cheese so I went all out and had their vegetarian pepper and cheese stuffed grilled croissant ($9) with roasted red peppers, caramelized onions, and warm, creamy goat cheese, which was served with fruit and a side green salad. You don’t see stuffed croissant breakfast sandwiches much on brunch menus! And then I added a side baby arugula and mango salsa salad with goat cheese crumbles, grilled red onion, and sunflower seeds. And then for good measure I ordered a side of breakfast potatoes for my boyfriend and I to share. I barely had enough room for my camera! It was fabulous vegetarian brunch feast. The grilled croissant was buttery and crispy and savoury with my roasted and sauteed veggies, the goat cheese was abundant, and I would have that baby arugula and mango salsa salad over and over again in a heartbeat, only as a main the next time!

I love how crisp all the flavours were for everything and how bright, casual, and relaxing the whole place was. The space may not be the biggest, but it’s a sweet place with great food and a happy atmosphere; you can’t ask for more.

*****

The Commissary is located at 889 Queen Street East at the southeast corner of Queen and Logan Ave. in Leslieville.

The sequel to my previous post was spotting another pair of Eastern Yellow Robins, not far from the nesting pair. It seemed obvious that this second pair also had a nest, as they made repeated visits to the same spot. As we zeroed in on the spot I was very surprised to find this little fellow.

It’s a nestling Eastern Yellow Robin, too young to have voluntarily left the nest, but faithfully being fed by its parents. Eastern Yellow Robins generally fledge at approximately 12-13 days – I suspect this one is 3-4 days short of that although they are known to leave nests rather early to hide in the undergrowth until reaching independence after about a month. Working backwards this pair must have commenced nesting at the beginning of August – early starters indeed!
