A number of Campbelltonians and citizens of the surrounding communities use the highway to drive between Glen Levit and Campbellton or to travel to further regions yet. The scenery is magnificent but it is also steeped in interesting historical stories. For instance, as you drive west on Route 11 from Campbellton, just before the Route 17 Intersection on your left (south side), you will see a body of water called Duff’s Lake. Most people from around here know of this marshy little lake but where exactly did the name come from?

The name Duff’s Lake actually comes from the original owner of the property from back in the early 1800’s. Alexander Duff (junior) and his wife Elizabeth Malcolm were married in 1829 and settled in that area of Restigouche County. Like many early settlers, the Duffs came from Perthshire, Scotland, and the Parish of Logierait. Robert Ferguson of Athol House, known as the founder and father of Restigouche County, also came from Logierait Parish, as did the McIntosh and many other families.

A son of Alexander Duff Sr., John Duff, originally immigrated to Pictou in 1812 and the family followed. His father, Alexander Duff and Isabel McIntosh of Perthshire brought their family to Pictou, Nova Scotia, in 1817. The family tradition in Pictou says that the younger son, Alexander Jr., went to the Miramichi and married Elizabeth Malcolm. Of course the Miramichi fire of 1825 had devastated the Miramichi area and there is no doubt that he actually came as far north as the Restigouche. Alexander Jr. and his wife Elizabeth are both buried in the Athol House Cemetery. Alexander Duff died April1, 1884, aged 82 and Duff, Elizabeth M., died Aug 29, 1887.

The first census taken in this area was in 1851 and shows the following:

Duff, Alexander Jr., age 49, husband, from Scotland 1817, farmer, proprietor (Duff’s Lake); Duff, Elizabeth, age 45, wife, born in N.B.; Duff, Albert, age 22, son, born in N.B., lumberer; Duff, Alexander, age 20, son, born in N.B., lumberer; Duff, Isabella, age 19, daughter, born in N.B., at service; Duff, Jessie, age 17, daughter, born in N.B.; Duff, John, age 14, son, born in N.B.; Duff, Mary, age 12, daughter, born in N.B.; Duff, Peter, age 9,son, born in N.B.; Duff, William, age 7, son, born in N.B.; Duff, Nancy, age 5, daughter, born in N.B.; Duff, George, age 11 months, born in N.B.

The 1870-71 McAlpine’s Maritime Provinces Directory lists Mr. Duff as follows:

Duff, Alexander… Farmer…. Addington (5 miles from Campbellton).

A brother of Alexander Duff Jr. came to this area for a while to work. In 1827 Robert wrote a letter to his parents in East River, Pictou, Nova Scotia. He told his parents he was working for Mr. Ferguson who had hired him for a year to work on his farm “so don’t expect me home this summer”. He hired out for 72 Pounds and part of that was in cash and the rest in a note drawn on a bank in Halifax. He forwarded the note to his parents in the amount of 50 pounds and asked them to sell the bill in Halifax, if necessary. No doubt he is referring to Robert Ferguson and his farm at Athol House. The letter shows us that cash was in very short supply at that time and most businessmen dealt in notes that were drawn on Halifax banks.

In 1838 Alexander Jr. wrote to his brother, Peter Duff, in Pictou. He tells his brother he received the letter from him very late and that “I suppose that it lay for some time in the tyrants store”. No doubt this is a reference to Robert Ferguson of Athol House who had a store and was well known as a man of very strong will. Alexander Jr. mentions some of the ways he was earning a living in Restigouche. For example, he earned 12 pounds doing roadwork and earned another 50 pounds sawing fine wood that came from the islands. The reference to fine wood from the islands makes one think that perhaps this is “Ash”, as the Islands of the Restigouche were a large source of the Ash used by the Natives in making baskets. Alexander goes on to state that “there is not much lumbering this winter as the prices are very low but I did haul a little wood for Ferguson on the river and hauled considerable firewood to Campbellton.

He states that he had a crop of 150 barrels of potatoes and the oats were tolerable good but as yet he had no barley or wheat because he had no seed. Alexander goes on to ask his brother for a pair of cart wheels. He also mentions that Alex Ferguson had run away from his parents (Robert Ferguson – the old tyrant) and he is in Canada in the volunteers. Here he is referring to the rebellion in Lower Canada. In closing, Alexander mentions that Ritchie is rather dearer than Ferguson now.

The Ritchies, as in Ritchie Street in Campbellton, owned a ship building business in Campbellton as well as a large store. Alexander hopes that if he can get clear of debt he will take a trip to visit the family. He then goes on to say that Betsy Ferguson is married to a Fraser from Bathurst. This is a reference to Elizabeth Ferguson, a daughter of Robert Ferguson who married John Fraser. The Frasers purchased the old property of Edward Mann in Cross Point and Mr. Fraser was a very prominent person in the early days of this area. That property was, until recently, owned by the Alexander Family. At the end of the letter, Alexander sends best wishes to his father and mother without knowing that his father had died three months earlier.

A sister of Alexander Duff came to Restigouche to visit her brother and met Peter Smith, a prominent businessman in Campbellton. Peter was a widower and soon married Christina. Members of this Smith Family later moved to Flatlands and Glen Levit and there are many descendants still there to this day.

So what of the children of Alexander Duff and Mary Malcolm? Their son George Duff married Mary Ann Murray. This is the Murray family of Glencoe, where many of the same Murray family still live. George lived on the “Old Homestead” where he and his wife are buried in the Campbellton Rural Cemetery. When George died in 1930 as an old man he left two daughters, Mrs. Walter Thompson in California, and Mrs. Lyman McKenzie in Tide Head.

So the next time you drive pass Duff’s Lake, pause and think of Alexander Duff cutting firewood to sell in Campbellton to haul in by sleigh in hopes he receives his cart wheels for the summer – 165 years ago. WOW!

Natal com Robert Downey #1 Jr e Jude Law?

É isso mesmo, minha gente!

A primeira vez que eu vi o trailer, há alguns meses, eu achei que o filme seria bem babaca. Além disso, não tinha nada a ver com a imagem que eu fazia do Sherlock Holmes.

Em respeito ao #1, eu coloquei meus preconceitos de lado e achei, dessa vez, o trailer bem divertido.

Mais: estou até ansiosa para ver o filme.

PS1: A Warner Bros escalou para a direção Guy Ritchie, que reescreveu o roteiro.

PS2: Quem também integra o elenco é a Rachel McAdams, que parece ser a nova queridinha de Hollywood. Ela está em Te Amarei para Sempre e Intrigas de Estado, mas para mim ainda é a Amy de Tudo em Família.

Hace una semana vi Julie & Julia, la nueva película de Nora Ephron y que además es la primera “major motion picture” que gira en torno a un blog.

Lo primero que hice, naturalmente, fue recomendársela a quienes habitan y dan forma al espacio murciano y que por esta condición (que puede pasar por gratuita o inofensiva y que en realidad es todo lo contrario) nos hemos hecho muchas de las preguntas que el personaje de Amy Adams se hace con respecto a la labor de dar vida y alimentar un blog: la necesidad, la realidad, el compromiso. Estas preguntas, hay que decirlo, no tienen respuesta. Pero esta falta de salidas (o de salidas fáciles) no afecta a la película que, contra todos los pronósticos, se logra sostener y cerrar después de haberse abierto como cola de globo. Lo que quiero decir es que la película ni sale volando ni se escurre. Más bien como que se congela. Y creo que ésa es su mayor virtud: evitar el hervidero. El entusiasmo que me provocó esa muestra de contención o profesionalidad narrativa me llevó a calificar la dirección de Ephron como “precisa” y al guión como “intimidante”. Ahora, es evidente que exagero.

Lo que es cierto es que la película de Ephron revela una forma muy particular, que además me gusta mucho, de hacer cine y coloca definitivamente a Ephron en el equipo de Spielberg. Es una forma que recuerda más a un campo de refugiados o a un campamento de sobrevivientes o a un grupo de soldados rasos que se juntaba en la noche a contar historias mientras esperaban el amanecer y que, al final, terminaron hablando en un código que fue producto del aislamiento. Un día estos sobrevivientes regresaron a sus países y fueron recibidos como héroes y la reintegración fue feliz. Entre ellos están o Giuseppe Tornatore o Billy Wilder o Guy Ritchie, y es ahí en donde Spielberg es la gran ballena blanca y en donde Scorsese se mueve como un submarino y en donde David Fincher es un buzo a la deriva y en donde Christopher Nolan o Jean-Pierre Jeunet amenazan con convertirse en huracán. También aquí está Alfonso Cuarón. No hay tiburones.

Por otra parte, están los directores que siguen en el campo de batalla. Ellos, salvo algunas excepciones, nunca saldrán de ahí. Tampoco tienen un código sino que aprendieron a vivir en soledad. Unos viven huyendo constantemente. Otros, como Fellini, se revuelven y saltan en el lodo frente al enemigo porque saben que son inmortales. Lars von Trier, en cambio, está herido y sus últimas fuerzas están destinadas a acribillar a quien se acerque, ya sea por traidor o por cobarde o porque sí. Hitchcock entendió el secreto de esta guerra eterna y Kubrick lo reformó. Kurosawa fue un suicida nato. Lo que más hay son fantasmas, pero con una particularidad: estos fantasmas primero fueron fantasmas y después, a fuerza del horror, se convirtieron en personas (o en algo que simulaba personas; nunca lograron perder su calidad espectral). Entre ellos están Bergman, Welles o Jean Renoir.

Todo esto, claro, es a grandes rasgos y no es verdad.

Tony Carey, ex-tecladista do Rainbow, disse à revista Classic Rock que nunca haverá uma reunião da banda.

Carey, que tocou nos clássicos “Rising” e “On Stage”, acredita que já passou o tempo disso acontecer. “Eu adoraria ter a chance de entrar no palco novamente com Richie Blackmore [guitarra], Ronnie James Dio [vocais] e Jimmy Bain [baixo]“, ele disse. “Nós poderíamos ter Bobby Rondinelli ou Greg Smith na bateria, substituindo Cozy Powell. Mas eu posso lhe afirmar que isso nunca vai acontecer”.

Ele ainda continuou: “Ronnie não tem nenhuma perspectiva de trabalhar novamente com Ritchie. E Ritchie está tão compenetrado em sua música renascentista, com o BLACKMORE’S NIGHT, que eu duvido que ele chegue a cogitar a hipótese de unir o Rainbow novamente. Então, qualquer um que esteja imaginando uma possível reunião pode esquecer.”

Carey, que foi co-fundador do OVER THE Rainbow com o vocalista Joe Lynn Turner e Rondinelli, está atualmente conversando com o vocalista Doogie White (que esteve na última formação do Rainbow em 1994) sobre um novo projeto, e está também trabalhando num novo álbum solo.

“Eu tive que sair do OVER THE Rainbow, porque estive gravemente doente no início do ano – ao ponto de receber a notícia de ter apenas 10% de chances de vida – e não podia me comprometer com a agenda da banda. [Foi então substituído por Paul Morris]. Mas felizmente, essa nova banda com Doogie vai acontecer e eu posso voltar a tocar o orgão Hammond mais alto do mundo!”

O que eu acho: deixem Blackmore e companhia em paz…O Rainbow foi uma ótima banda enquanto durou. Não adianta  tentar reunir o que já deu certo uma vez em algum lugar do passado. O Blackmore  já está com 64 anos, daqui a pouco só vai ter força para colher flores no castelo dele, o cara já tá na terceira idade…Agora essa banda com o Doggie que o Tony disse que vai fazer eu quero conferir.

Well, it would seem that these last few days have merited news on some of the more lesser known heroes (especially for DC). Today brings word on the long-rumored Lobo live action adaptation based on DC Comic’s psychotic immortal bounty hunter. The news is that Guy Ritchie has been attached to direct the film.

In the film, says the trade, Lobo will be a seven-foot tall, blue-skinned, indestructible and heavily muscled anti-hero who drives a pimped out motorcycle, and lands on Earth in search of four fugitives who are bent on wreaking havoc. Lobo teams with a small town teenaged girl to stop the creatures.

I’ve been back in London for a few days now, and most of that has been spent going through my research notes and updating EVERYTHING, as well as trying to work out what I’ll be looking for when I go to the National Archives.

I’ve been having an interesting time with two of the cases of illegitimacy in my family tree.

First is Mary Jane Glennie (my great-great grandmother).  Mary Jane Glennie’s illegitimate birth was one of the first things that I found out when I started researching my family tree.  We had told ourselves that the chances of finding out who her father was were slim, as no-one was mentioned on her birth certificate.  She was born on November 7th 1867 at Corrie of Morlich, Towie to Catherine Glennie.  No mention whatsoever of the father.  Later when we came across her death certificate, we brushed aside mention of her father as ______ Ritchie, as the death was reported by her neighbour, and we assumed that it may have simply been based on tales or such like.  We weren’t optimistic of finding any kirk session records telling of the father for his actions for an 1867 birth either.  However, today Kildrummy Families has reignited my hope that we may be able to track down (or at least narrow down) Mary’s father.  Their website notes that in the 1881 census, Mary (whilst living with her mother and grandfather, so we can be certain that it’s her) was going by the surname Ritchie – perhaps there was some truth in that afterall!

Second is Ann Harvey Brownie.  I only discovered Ann today thanks once again to the fantastic Kildrummy families website.  Ann’s parentage is different to Mary’s in that although her parents were not married, her father (William Glennie, brother of the aforementioned Catherine) is mentioned on her birth records.  Ann was born on the 23rd of May 1860 in Tullynessle & Forbes.  However, she too appears under her father’s surname of Glennie in the 1871 census.  Whilst there was no mystery to resolve here, I couldn’t help but be intrigued by the repeat occurrence of this action.

It made me wonder if the parents married (although in both cases I am yet to find a marriage certificate, and all of the information I have for Catherine Glennie describes her as single throughout her life) or if they simply chose to change their name.  Would it have simply been a matter of what name you used in your everyday dealings being your name, or was there a formal procedure for this?  If there was, did Mary or Ann do this, or did they simply enter a name they use onto the census return?  As neither seem to have this surname for the official records I have tracked down so far, I am doubting that these names were legally recognised and simply were used day-to-day.

Interestingly enough,  it struck me that I had done the exact opposite to Mary and Ann.  Born with my father’s surname, at 17 I changed my surname to my mother’s maiden name of Murray.  I wanted to make myself independent from a father I felt no links with – perhaps they wanted to establish such a link.

However, both  Ann and Mary spent some time (it’s not known how much) around each other in Towie – maybe one influenced the other’s decision?

You can always tell the difference between old school and nexgen sales people by the way they network with others. I once had a sales manager that told me that you should hate the competition and should never be amicable with them. I completely disagree. I often had lunch with the competition. A few times I had been to their homes and them to mine. Competition today is different than most people think. If you network intelligently, your businesses can coexist peacefully and do well from combined experience and lessons.

I have been networking since I got into equipment sales and rental in 1997 in one form or another. Whether it was communicating with local companies and exchanging deadbeat lists, or calling around to find clients equipment I didn’t have. Sites such as Linkedin, Facebook, and Twitter are fantastic outlets to broaden your contact base. I have made many friends and contacts through these sites and worked with people across the world. I got on Linkedin in 2006 when it was still relatively new just to test the waters. I followed with Myspace, then Twitter, and finally I jumped on the Facebook bandwagon (which I couldn’t live without now).

Without networking, we are in the dark. My old sales manager is in the dark. He has no idea what the competition is doing, nor the clientele for that matter. You gotta get out, shake some hands and kiss some babies if you want to broaden your base and expand your network. Recent networking has enabled me to meet people I would have never met otherwise and opened up so many more avenues in the way I do business. I have been able to take my game to a global level.
