the River Lahn, Wetzlar

The Lahn runs through north west Germany for many miles, and is a famous canoeing river. In summer it is common to see parties of canoes working their way down the series of rapids and falls as the river passes between old Town Wetzlar and the new, and there are docks and ramps and tie-up points all along. This image was captured from one of the canoe docks, just downriver from the floating bridge (only deployed in summer) and just upriver from the famous stone bridge to Old Town. In the background you see the Leica plants. The reeds in the foreground are common reed (phragmities)…found around the globe. You can see the park along the Lahn on the far side of the river…this park runs most of the length of Wetzlar on one side of the river or the other.

No special challenges in this shot, other than the low light levels and the reeds blowing in the wind. I took several shots to catch them where I wanted them in the frame.

Lame, for someone who spends as much time in the water as I do, but there you have it. My mind has decided that there is nothing creepier than a big-ass, slimy river fish.

Everyone says the same things when I explain this to them:

“River fish can’t bite you.”

But they can touch me.

“Fish are so pretty!”

F that. Have you ever seen a lamprey?

“I bet they’re more afraid of you than you are of them.”

Impossible. And the dead ones are not afraid of bumping into me as we float down the river together.

Don’t get me started on the nightmare inducing things that live in salt water, because what type of animals live in the ocean?

Monsters.

Monsters live in the ocean.

I can think of few things worse than being stuck in the middle of some murky body of water when some icthyoid slides by my leg. I guarantee you, I will never swim faster than when (I think) a fish has touched me.*

Los socios de River votarán el próximo sábado 5 de diciembre al sucesor de José María Aguilar en la presidencia del club.
Los candidatos son cinco: Rodolfo D ´Onofrio, Daniel Passarella, Antonio Caselli, Mariano Mera Figueroa y Daniel Kiper. Según lo que marcan las encuestas, los que tiene más chances de triunfar son D´Onofrio, Passarella y Caselli.
D´Onofrio es el hijo de Raúl, un ex interventor de AFA en la década del 70, y cuenta como principal caballito de batalla en la campaña nada ni nada menos que a Enzo Francescoli, quien sería manager en caso que gane. Además, en los últimos días sumó el apoyo de glorias del club como Amadeo Carrizo y Norberto Alonso (el Beto ocuparía el puesto de asesor privado de D´ Onofrio).
El candidato a vicepresidente primero de D´Onofrio es Hugo Santilli, alguien que si bien cuando ocupó el máximo cargo en el club ganó todo (hasta la Intercontinental), lo dejó casi en quiebra al principio de los 90.
De Passarella no hay mucho que aportar. Hombre importante en la historia riverplatense, campeón como técnico y jugador que supo entender rápido como es el juego de la política: se amigó después de 15 años con Ramón Díaz para que sea “su” técnico en caso de imponerse en los comicios. Seguramente, ignoró que Astrada tiene contrato hasta diciembre del 2010, y que el equipo logró una mejora con su llegada. Sus vices son Diego Turner y Omar Solassi.
Caselli es el hijo de Esteban, el senador argentino en el Vaticano. Es un empresario que anunció que con su triunfo llegarían al club Mario Bolatti y Fernando Cavenaghi. No se sabe cuanto de cierto son estas promesas.
Su candidato a vice es Alfredo Dávicce, alguien que supo estar en River en la década del 90 con mucho éxito, ya que equilibró las finanzas del club y ganó muchos títulos (la Copa Libertadores y Supercopa, entre otros).
De Mera Figueroa no se conoce mucho. Su spot de campaña es: “El dueño del club son los socios”. Tiene como postulante a vice segundo a Stéfano Di Carlo, hijo de Osvado Di Carlo, presidente interino entre 1989 y 1990, y uno de los dirigentes más respetados de la historia millonaria por su honestidad (falleció de un infarto en el 2005 viendo al equipo).
Kiper es un “eterno” postulante. Se presentó en las elecciones de 1995, cuando terminó tercero, y en la del 2005, finalizando cuarto. Sus candidatos a vices son Alberto Assef y Patricio De Luca.
En definitiva, ojalá que los votantes eligan la mejor opción, para que River vuelva a estar en el lugar que se merece: entre los más grandes del fútbol mundial.

“Levantate pendejo que tengo una sorpresa para vos”, comentó mi papá y se acercó rápidamente a mi cama, en donde yo estaba durmiendo. Soñaba que iba a ver un partido de River. “Hoy nos vamos a Buenos Aires a ver al Millo campeón”, me dijo. En ese momento desperté. Me imaginaba que la sorpresa podía ser un videojuego de aventura para la Sega, o una pelota de fútbol para poder jugar con mis amigos, o tal vez un muñequito de acción de los Power Rangers que en aquel tiempo estaban de moda, pero lo que menos pensaba era que mi viejo tenía entradas para ver la final de la Supercopa entre River y San Pablo de Brasil. Mi alegría fue plena después de que mi viejo me repitiera como seis veces la misma noticia al ver que yo no le creía. Primero pensé que se trataba de una joda de mal gusto, pero al notar que mi papá insistía tanto con lo mismo, no me quedó mas remedio que convencerme de sus palabras. No lo podía creer, y simplemente sentí que todavía dormía en mi cama y que ese sueño que tuve hacía instantes se había transformado en realidad. No pasó mucho tiempo para que me vistiera completamente de River y preparara todas las cábalas que se me ocurrieron para que, de una vez por todas, emprendiéramos viaje hacia el Monumental, que esa noche iba a explotar por la cantidad de personas que concurrirían al espectáculo. De más está decir que la confianza que teníamos mi viejo y yo aquel día era impresionante. Por un lado ya nos veíamos festejando, pero por el otro, sabíamos bien que nos medíamos ante un rival muy complicado, que contaba con muy buenos jugadores y que salía a dar batalla en cualquier cancha. Sin embargo, éramos concientes de que, con el empate logrado en Brasil, la balanza estaba de nuestro lado y teníamos muchas chances de salir campeones esa noche. El viaje fue interminable. Las cinco horas y media que tardamos en llegar a Buenos Aires parecieron doce. Supongo que eso fue producto de los nervios y la ansiedad. Apenas llegados a la gran ciudad, decidimos dejar las cosas en el hotel, bañarnos, y a las dos horas ya estábamos camino a la cancha. Cerca de Avenida Libertador, se notaba un clima de final. Las banderas, los colores rojo y blanco y la gente vestida de River que caminaba rumbo al estadio eran lo único que se divisaba a 100 metros a la redonda. Las calles estaban repletas de fiesta, emoción y de esperanza por ver campeón al Millonario. Tardamos un poco para ingresar al estadio, debido a la cantidad de público que presenciaba ese momento mágico e inigualable. Una vez adentro, nos dirigímos a la platea San Martín Baja para ocupar nuestros respectivos lugares. Recuerdo muy bien hoy, y así lo haré hasta el día que me muera, el increíble recibimiento de la gente cuando River pisó el campo de juego. El Monumental y sus alrededores se tiñieron de rojo y blanco. Había bengalas, papelitos, serpentinas, globos y lo más importante, los hinchas. Estaba todo dado para que esa noche fuera una fiesta inigualable. Sinceramente, no recuerdo con certeza cómo fue el desarrollo del espectáculo, pero sí me acuerdo de que merecíamos ganar ese partido debido a las ocasiones de gol que River generó durante los 90 minutos de juego. A pesar del esfuerzo que hicieron los jugadores “Millonarios” para ponerse en ventaja, el primer tiempo terminó sin goles. El nerviosismo se apoderó de mi cuerpo, pero la fe nunca se fue. En un momento clave del partido, aproximadamente a los 30 minutos del primer tiempo, hubo penal para River. El encargado de ejecutarlo era el Enzo Francescoli, uno de los máximos ídolos de la institución. Mi viejo y yo nos abrazamos como si festejáramos el gol. Papá me agarró y me subió a sus hombros para que yo pudiera ver con atención la ejecución del penal. En aquel momento se me cruzaron muchas cosas por la cabeza, como por ejemplo el delirio que iba a ser la cancha cuando el capitán de River metiera el penal, o de que manera celebraría el gol. Pero esos pensamientos no se iban a cumplir justo en ese momento, ya que el arquero Roger le iba a detener la ejecución al mediapunta uruguayo. Pero mi viejo y yo sabíamos bien de que no podíamos perder esa final. El Millo tenía que ganar como fuera. Gracias al rendimiento de los jugadores y al apoyo constante de la gente, en el segundo tiempo River llegó al gol por la calidad de “El Muñeco” Gallardo que elaboró una jugada brillante para que luego Marcelo “El Chileno” Salas definiera de justa manera ante la salida del arquero de San Pablo. La alegría que teníamos con mi viejo era incomparable. River hasta ese momento era campeón de la Supercopa 1997 y nosotros, pese a los 600 kilómetros que nos tuvimos que hacer desde Santa Rosa hacia Buenos Aires, estábamos presentes en ese día tan especial. Por un instante nos invadió el miedo. Fue justo el empate del equipo brasileño, con un tiro desde afuera del área que se clavó en el ángulo izquierdo de “El Mono” Burgos. Pero ni River ni nosotros nos rendímos; todo lo contrario. Las esperanzas por conseguir anotar nuevamente se renovaron. Minutos más tarde, nuevamente “El Chileno” Salas hizo que todas las personas “Millonarias” que se encontraban aquella noche en el estadio deliraran al compás de River. Luego de una jugada exquisita, el delantero riverplatense marcó el segundo gol, que definió el partido. Recuerdo que el árbitro era el paraguayo Aquino, y que en los últimos momentos, fue impresionante el sufrimiento debido a los cinco minutos extra que adicionó. En ese instante, todos los hinchas de River insultaron con todas sus fuerzas al juez para que finalizara el encuentro. Una vez pitado el final, mi viejo y yo estallamos en llanto. River era campeón de la única copa que le faltaba en la vitrina. Los festejos comenzaron dentro de la cancha, más tarde se trasladaron al Hall del estadio y luego a la calle. Esa noche pasé uno de los momentos más felices de toda mi vida. ¿Que más podía pedir? Tenía 7 años, había podido ir a ver al club de mis amores con mi viejo, en el Monumental, y como si fuera poco, salimos campeones. Al día siguiente partimos nuevamente para mi casa. Me sentía absolutamente felíz por haber visto campeón a River, por vivir aquella noche extraordinaria y porque sabía que un momento así no pasa todos los días. Pero más contento me pone haber podido disfrutar aquel momento con mi viejo, que me haya levantado con esa noticia y recordar esa frase que quedará guardada por siempre en mi corazón: “Hoy nos vamos para Buenos Aires a ver al Millo campeón”. Porque de cierta manera, mi viejo me cumplió un sueño.

The holidays are coming, some people dread it, or sometimes down right I hate it. Thanksgiving I love because it’s a time to be thankful, and look back on your life at all you do have to be thankful for. Looking at your glass and see that it is indeed half full instead of half empty.

Christmas I love because I love giving, I love getting people gifts, either goofy or something they can use.  I like to think I’m a generous person, and on Christmas I go into overload. I give to it hurts literally. I try to buy everyone a little something. even if it’s a little 5 dollar Starbucks gift card. To me Christmas is really a wonderful time of year.

New Years….well thats a different story. New Years I use to work in the Bars most of my life so this holiday is a little tainted, also I get a little down around New Years, a Christmas decompression, and the thought another year is gone. It’s like watching sands of an hourglass go by. So I get a little goofy, I may become a hermit for a few weeks, or drink ALOT, it all depends but two times a year kind of put me in a tailspin my birthday, and New Years both represent me getting another year older.

Getting old is something that scares the crap out of me. I abhor weakness, and being a burden to anyone. When you get older that’s the inevitable truth. As I get older too the window of opportunity to reach my dreams and aspirations slowly closes.

So if I act a little goofy around New Years, don’t say I didn’t warn you.

El Pelado es líder dentro y fuera de la cancha.

Junto a Gallardo y Ortega forma el tridente de referentes que en la actualidad tiene el plantel. Además, el Pelado ocupa un lugar privilegiado a la hora de equilibrar el funcionamiento del equipo tanto en su rol de volante central como cuando se corre a la útima línea.

Resultaba difícil, y hasta casi imposible, aventurar cómo sería el rendimiento de un jugador como Almeyda que venía de años de inactividad en el fútbol profesional y sólo se lo había visto acompañanado a Diego Maradona en el Showboll o útimamente en partidos de futbol senior junto al equipo de veteranos de River. Las opiniones de hinchas, y periodistas, eran variadas pero ninguna avisoraba un futuro prometedor para el “5” titular en el Mundial Francia 98.

Pero la realidad superó cualquier tipo de pronóstico y el Pelado se convirtió en líder por lo que demostró dentro del campo de juego. Su despliegue, experiencia y estado físico le permitieron competir codo a codo con pibes 10 o 15 años menores que él; sin embargo, lo que más aportó fue serenidad y orden en un equipo que no daba garantías en ninguna de sus líneas.

Su reciente lesión en el hombro, en el partido ante Godoy Cruz, abre un interrogante para un técnico que lo considera fundamental, al igual que sus compañeros. De ser considerado un ex pasó a ser un referente. Una paradoja que sólo el fútbol sabe brindar pero que se puede explicar cuando un jugador tiene ese coraje y amor propio que el Pelado se encarga de demostrar en cada partido.

These are three words that I would use to describe my life of late, since I started my travelling some weeks back my life has become a whole lot hectic and truly 24 hours is not sufficient. Am I in effective or am I overloaded? But alas the prospect of the business motivates me and keeps me going. Surprisingly the stress has not taken a toll on my health and this evening after 20 laps in the pool, I feel more energized than ever.

Hungry – after a year of hard work, the seeds that have been sown are beginning to show some promise and with Murphy as my lifelong companion everything has come together at the same time. Well I guess this is a good problem to have. Somehow with things looking up, it has made me even hungrier. Some of my closest friends know the reason, for asides from business I have nothing else to fill my mind and my heart with. Despite the non-stop pace, I still find that I drift off into thoughts of Shuying every now and then.

Tired though is the body, the mind moves on at a hectic pace. Perhaps now I am truly getting my wish of being an inventor. It is only recently that I have begun to realise my childhood dream of creating something from nothing. Piecing together many different technologies I craft my dream solution, for once not worrying about the cost. It was simply a dream come true, a chocoholics dream come true in a land of chocolate covered pavements and chocolate milk rivers.

But I do wonder ever so often, what good is success if you do not have someone to share it with. My heart still beats within the one that I love, the angel that showed me what life could be.

Su proposta dell’assessore all’Urbanistica Michelangelo Tripodi, la giunta regionale ha deciso di aderire alla manifestazione, che si svolgerà il 19 dicembre prossimo a Villa San Giovanni, per dire no alla costruzione del ponte sullo stretto di Messina. La scelta – è scritto in una nota dell’ufficio stampa della giunta regionale – fa seguito alla decisione assunta recentemente di presentare ricorso alla Corte Costituzionale per sollevare il conflitto di attribuzioni nei confronti del Governo in merito al progetto varato dal Cipe per l’avvio del cantiere per la cosiddetta “variante di Cannitello”.

During this session, we discussed the need for the patient to spend time within the wilderness. He is an avid hiker. As a nature adventurer, he recalls many stories that appear both natural and supernatural to us.

” I remember one particular moment within nature. I was in my canoe. During the entire day I had been travelling using my canoe against a very large, reckless and merciless river. Sometimes it was so hard to go through it that I would get out of my canoe, walking on the rocks that were standing out of the water, trying to move my boat using all the strengths that I had. Sometimes I would unload the canoe on the shore and walk on the borders of the lake in order to skip a very difficult part of the river. It was extremely hard physically. I wanted to go to a lake that my grandfather’s old friend had told me about. He showed me an old map of the area. He pointed a large, long lake shaped like the tail of a fox.

” If you get there, Rusty… Kid… You will find yourself. You will know who you are. ” he said.

I knew something was up, heh. That old indian never told us about his secret places. I thought he was joking and that map was fake. I had never heard about this lake and it seemed so large that I couldn’t believe no one had told me about it until then.

When I finally arrived at the lake, I searched for something. I did not know what it was exactly, but since I was told I would find myself, I was expecting something very special. Maybe something belonging to his old, almost forgotten tribe? Or maybe it was just some prank? Still, the lake was there… He wasn’t lying about that part…

I spent about forty-five minutes canoeing on the fox’s tail. After going to the limits of the lake, I turned around and prepared to go home. Then it struck me. When I came back, I saw it. I saw everything. The sun was setting and the lake was reflecting a golden honey light. The trees were green, strong, tall, massive. The water was completely calm. A mirror. That’s when I realized what he meant. That old indian was wiser than I had thought. He knew it would take me a complete day to get there. He knew I would go to the edge of the lake. He knew I would come back. He knew that when I would turn around, the time would be right for a sunset. And he knew, just like I knew at that moment, that you find yourself by turning around, going back to where you’ve been. I found myself. I found out that I was strong. Strong in my arms, yes, but also strong in my will to go to the end of things. I worked hard to get there. The river had been against me. This time, as I would go back, I would flow with it.

For I knew who I was. ”

The book has a long title that I don’t want to put in the title of this blog.  The full title is “Wild Beauty: Photographs of the Columbia River Gorge, 1867 – 1957″.  It is by Terry Toedtemeier and John Laursen and is a 6-year-long process of finding photos, digital editing them to restore them to an estimation of their original condition, and categorizing them in a book.  Before I talk about the book, I will talk about the event at the library.Last Tuesday, John Laursen talked about his book at the Harney County Library.  He talked about some of the research that went into the book.  Then he picked several pictures from the book and talked in depth about them.  It was very interesting.

There was also a few good questions asked about how the pair found information about the pictures.  I think part of the answer was sometimes it was luck because one album was for engineering purposes.  Therefore, the pictures were predominated with rock and supplies for building the road.  The very last picture in the album was one that the authors decided was worthy of entering into the book.

Then the co-author gave a book to the library.  There was also books for sell, but for 400 dollars!  And it was nonprofit too!  There was some organization that donated money so that they could donate a book to every library.  From what I’ve seen from the PowerPoint, I wanted to check it out.  With my mom being a librarian, I was able to get the library’s copy quickly.

The book has five different picture parts.  The first section is the best.  It is by Carleton Watkins, who is a very gifted photographer.  However, there are amazing photos throughout the book.  Perhaps the pictures that I didn’t enjoy as much were in section three, which featured Lily White and Sarah Ladd who had a houseboat.  They focused more on light and texture than particular things.  So some I really enjoyed and some I really didn’t enjoy as much.

The book has good notes on most but not all of the pictures.  Also, it has a general introduction and introductions to each section, which were both informative and interesting.  However, the acknowledgments are worth reading.  After I read it, I appreciate the book much more because the acknowledgments tell about all the work that others spent to make the book possible.  Sure I knew that the authors spent a lot of time gathering pictures, but I wasn’t aware of the Photoshop experts fixing the images to bring them to as close to their original beauty as possible.  I did think about the research of finding the location of each picture, but not of the cartographer who made the two custom-made maps in the book.  Obviously there are editors but the acknowledgments go on for a few pages!

This is an amazing book.  Maybe I should look at picture books more often.
