When George and Margarette Harper found themselves on the cusp of losing their homes, and with a tee

When George and Margarette Harper found themselves on the cusp of losing their homes, and with a teenager going off to college next year, they decided that enough was enough. They knew that their way out of their financial situation was right under their noses, but where was it. They decided to work smarter instead of harder. So, in their living room among bills, cut off notices and college applications, George and Margarette began formulating their recipe for change: With Margarette’s grant writing and organizational development talents mixed with George’s impeccable mechanical and technical skills, they added a dash of courage and sprinkles of prayer. Out came the U.S. Grant Coaches Roadshow, a grants seminar targeting churches, ministries and non-profits in over 50 cities across the country. On March 30, 2010, at The Potter’s House Conference Center in Dallas, Texas, Margarette will share clear and practical insight with churches, ministries and non-profit organizations on how to grab a hold of government, corporate and foundation grants.

“People ask me why I don’t just write a grant for myself. But what they fail to realize is that mist grants are for non-profit organizations.” Margarette Continues, “Most grants are for non-profit organizations. And that is a truth that will be told all over the country. It is time for churches, ministries and grassroots organizations to step up and claim their prizes for providing outstanding services to their local communities. And I’m going to show them how it’s really done.”

Margarette Harper began her career in 1985 as a grants researcher for a non-profit health clinic in Brooklyn, New York. Since then, she has brought in more than $20 million to the agencies for which she has written proposals.

Margarette also serves as a licensed minister at The Potter’s House in North Texas where T.D. Jakes presides as Bishop. Her focus with the U.S. Grant Coaches Roadshow is to offer churches and ministries the tools necessary to increase their territories as change agents in their local communities.

George Harper III, the son of the first black commercial contractor in the state of Arkansas, has had a hammer in his hand since he was two years old. Today, he can build, repair, tune up and drive just about anything – anywhere. George is in charge of conference logistics as well as the motor coach, which the couple will travel and live in during the duration of the U.S. Grant Coaches 2010 Roadshow.

You will find a list of Roadshows as well as online registration at http://www.usgrantcoaches.com. You can also share in our road experiences through our U.S. Grant Coaches Facebook Fan Page.

I’ve just discovered a new app that may be of use to phptographers, it the MetOffice weather App. After a quick glance it looks like a fantastic app with weather maps, rainfall data, detailled 24hr forcasts and also has sunrise and sunset times for the location that you choose.

There remains one big question though! How accurate is it, lol. Well, I’ll keep my eye on it and compare it to the other weather apps I use and update you in due course.

On another note, I have received my ticket for the David Noton roadshow in Sheffield, looking forward to meeting the man behind those stunning images.

Victory to iiNet against roadshow films!
The verdict is out, ISPs are not responsible for the actions of pirates using their services. This will ensure that the torrent protocol can be used to download game patches and other legit free stuff without fear of having your internet service disconnected because they suspect your doing something you shouldn’t. It also means our internet prices won’t skyrocket as all ISP hire even more lawyers!

This may however cause people to start blaming Google for finding pirated wares, or computer manufactures for selling gear to pirates and like. But I’m hoping they’ll move the other way and realise that censoring and banning and angry actions aren’t working and they should be simply selling the stuff cheaper and making it easier to get.

I have just purchased my ticket to see the David Noton Roadshow at Sheffield Hallam University on the 25th Feb.

David, in my opinion, is one of the finest landscsape photographers there is. He produces stunning mesmerising works of art, the kind you can just sit and look at for ages, that shows a scene at its best, waiting for the right light to develop which sometimes has taken him weeks on location.

If you have never seen his work I can only recomend that you take a look at his extensive gallery on his website at www.DavidNoton.com or maybe come and see one of his roadshows.

His images and the stories behind them are full if inspiration.

On Saturday, I had the opportunity to attend the SABM (Saya Anak Bangsa Malaysia) Roadshow at the K

On Saturday, I had the opportunity to attend the SABM (Saya Anak Bangsa Malaysia) Roadshow at the KL-Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall. It was my first of sorts. This post was blogged live. But its posted up now after some offline editing and post-production conundrum. Here’s what happened:

Around 2-ish p.m: Screening of Fahmi Reza’s Sepuluh Tahun Sebelum Merdeka documentary. Centering around the issues we don’t quite know or heard of prior to Merdeka (Independence). It was meant to be an alternative to the more mainstream historical accounts found in our high school textbooks and etc.

3.04 p.m: Fahmi Reza takes the microphone and delivers a good and sound explanation on his documentary. He provides some good data on the left-winged political parties and how they contributed to a united front. The racism breed through the efforts of right-winged political parties; “Ah Chong- Ramasamy” ideology were also highlighted during his session.

Brought out the diverse backgrounds and posed a very thought provoking question: how did leaders of diverse racial, political and societal backgrounds come together to form the Perlembagaan Rakyat? Fahmi saw the need for a common political culture that transcends racial, religious, linguistic, class and ideological differences.

3.20p.m-3.31p.m: performance by a singer songwriter. Didn’t quite like it.

3.37p.m: Lawyer and blogger Jahaberdeen Mohd Yunoos kicked off the “Human Beings Born Free and Equal” session. He took it from the perspective of Islam and dealt systematically with defining what does it mean to be free and equal. Some of the key highlights of his presentation were the beauty of diversity and the equal treatment of individuals; of different religious advocacies as taught in the Al-Quran.

4.05pm: Sivin Kit or Mr. Prezi takes over representing the MCCBCHTS and brought a non-Islamic perspective. Creating a very wholesome workshop with information from both ends. Some of his highlights were that pluralism should be seen as a mosaic and not a melting pot, striving to be good neighbors and colleagues and to practice the best of our respective religious values and precepts. He went on to state that we could learn from other faiths too.

Introduced the “Golden Rule”; an ethical code whereby one has a right to just treatment and a responsibility to ensure justice to others. Used the famous “Good Samaritan” parable as an illustration and wrapped the session with the importance of people being peacemakers and bridgebuilders.

4.25p.m-4.31p.m: Second song by Danny from the SABM team performing an acoustic-remixed version of All Along the Watchtower by Jimi Hendrix. What a disaster. Trying to be polemical with a CLASSIC can only go well if you cover it properly!

4.31p.m: Art Harun took over. He provided an apologetic on why Malaysia is not an Islamic state. He forged eloquence and historical proofs to bring about a very good session. He specifically dealt with the technicalities regarding Article 3 and Article 153 of the Malaysian Constitution. He brought out many perspectives and I must say this was my personal favorite.

5.30p.m: A percussion unit was next to perform; I just couldn’t get their name down. But they were good. Finally! A good performance.

5.46p.m: Haris Ibrahim lead the talk on Nation in Distress? Did We Let it Happen? and resonated with pro-activity and anti-apathy. He brought out slides on our current issues and neglect. One interesting slide was a picture of a man on crutches walking in support of the Bersih rally. Kind of puts some of us to shame? No? His message exploded with “People Power” and it was definitely full of emotion and vigor.

6.29p.m: Jayanath Appadurai closes the session with his reflection on Malaysia today. He promoted SABM and brought what would have been an interesting roadshow for many of us.

7-ishp.m: Questions, Answers and Suggestions. I like a moment where people were concerned with who was funding SABM and decided to take an impromptu collection for a good cause. I must say I was touched, this came from the people! You don’t have that even churches nowadays. My other half and I did our part to contribute as well. And the amount was excellent even for what was left of a crowd of 200+ I assume?

SABM did a fantastic job. I liked seeing young people, my kind of people actually going for this. I had the opportunity to ask Julian Chin on what was his favorite session and what are his thoughts. He liked Haris’ and wanted to see more people of different races coming collectively to support a good cause since it is a “Malaysian issue.”

Well I guess that’s it. I sure did take a while but if you had the chance to go for one of these, give it a try.

Saya Anak Bangsa Malaysia will be taking its second Roadshow and Forum to the Klang Valley. This comes at a time when the nation needs to be reminded most about the Malaysian Project.

We have cruised into uncharted territory, into a demented landscape where firebombs take precedence over matured dialogue. We have to stand and take that test.

Based on five key messages, the half-day forum will lay bare the basis of this nation and its people. It will delve into the founding of this country, recognise our other Merdeka fighters, and provide clues about why we are the way we are – divided.

We will check with biting facts if our nation has been on the right track or are we a nation in distress.

We will ask why, of course. Here, mirrors may be of help.

We will talk about power and control. Not at the ethers of political office, but at the commons where you and I dwell. We will talk about Rakyat.

Mostly, we’ll talk about Malaysia, moreso the dire need to now walk.

And why you just have to – first and foremost – believe.

Believe instead – SABM Klang Valley Roadshow

We make no apology for returning to the subject of Vetting & Barring. Over the coming months it is going to have an impact on every voluntary organisation that works with children or vulnerable adults in any capacity, whether as service users or volunteers.

The Independent Safeguarding authority has already put a lot of information out, but they are running another series of information road shows up and down the country, with our local one being in Derby on 10th March 2010.

Here is a slightly edited version of their email:

Invitation to register for the Vetting & Barring Scheme Information Roadshows

We are pleased to inform you that the registration site is now open for the Information Roadshow events planned to take place in February and March. We will be running a total of 12 events in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Events will last for a total of 3 hours including Question and Answer sessions.

The events are being designed to explain the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act legislation, including the impact of Sir Roger Singleton’s recent review, set out the practicalities of the application and online checking processes and provide more information on the ISA. The information will help individuals understand the implications of the scheme for them and their organisations, and provide an opportunity to ask questions of the panel. It is expected that attendees will already have some background knowledge of the scheme and how it will apply to their organisation.

There will be around 500 places at each event and we anticipate that these will be fully subscribed. It is important that you only attend the event for which you are registered and that if you are unable to attend you let us know so that we can release a place to people on waiting lists.

We are very much looking forward to meeting our invited audiences. If you have any queries on the venues or the registration process please contact our helpline at 0207 403 3023 or email info@vbsroadshow.org.

Please note that the booking line is unable to deal with specific Scheme enquiries. If you have any questions regarding the Vetting and Barring Scheme or require further information please contact our specialist VBS helpline number 0300 123 1111.

To book a place at an event near you, please register at http://www.vbsroadshow.org

For more information about Vetting and Barring, contact us at the Volunteer Centre, or talk to the Development Team here at South Derbyshire CVS we can each be reached on 01283 550163.

Hey WGBH Lab Friends,

Happy New Year! As you start to put all the holiday decorations away, we want you to start taking a closer look at those old items sitting around.

We all have them, sitting in the attic or closet, passed down by a cousin’s cousin, estranged fathers, or a mothers, sister’s brother.

We hold on to them because they are a part of our family and because, we hope to someday pass them along to younger generations – even if all they become is trendy décor, or dust collectors. And we all hope that their history will someday tell a story.

We’re ready to hear it.

Does it make you laugh? Cry? Who gave you the piece, and what did they tell you about it? Whatever the details, The WGBH Lab, in partnership with PBS’s own Antiques Roadshow, wants to see your item and hear its story. Showcase your piece in an original home movie or creative short film, no longer than 2 minutes. Be unique, and fun with your antique and its story. We want your video to dazzle our audience, and us as well.

Your reward? – How about a pair of tickets to a live taping of Antiques Roadshow this summer?

From now, until the end of May, we will be awarding 3 video submissions with a pair of VIP tickets to attend a live taping of an Antiques Roadshow appraisal event.

Additionally, your video could be chosen by Antiques Roadshow for national broadcast at a later date, to be featured on their website, or chosen as a stand alone video short to be aired on PBS stations nationwide!

Mereka butuh diyakinkan,” kata Mahdi.

Pungli dan keamanan

Seorang pengusaha asal Aceh, sebut saja Hamzah, mengatakan, pungutan liar (pungli) masih menjadi salah satu momok bagi pengusaha. “Nilai pungli bervariasi, 10-20 persen.

Adanya pungli mengakibatkan munculnya biaya ekstra.

Last week I asked readers for submissions to the Roadshow Readers’ Choice. I figured you, the reader, would come up with a bunch of great ideas for a stop on the Roadshow. And I was right — the suggestions have been funny, interesting, terrifying, and weird. Here are some of the jobs that have been proposed for me to do so far:

Flight Attendant
Overnight Security Guard at a half-built condo complex
Dog trainer
Cell Company Customer Service Rep
Engineer
Skytrain Employee
Braille Translator
Boom Operator
Embalmer
Pageant Judge
Adult Store Attendant
Union Rep
Childcare Assistant
Zookeeper
Stand Up Comic (this one scares me the most)
Oyster Floater
Parade Float Dismantler
Logger
Carney
Taxi Driver
IMAX Screen Cleaner
Mascot
Chicken Sexer
Organic Farm Inspector
Port-o-Potty Empty-er

Keep the suggestions coming! If you haven’t played guidance counselor yet, be sure to think up a job for me. (Visit the rules before making your suggestions.) You can email me your ideas or comment below. Send them in by December 16th. To recap what jobs I’ve done so far, visit my resume. Once all the submissions are in, I’ll compile a shortlist of the most popular and most interesting (and possibly the most terrifying) and have readers vote on what job they want to see me do for the Roadshow.

This week on From the Top, we feature a broadcast taped at the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts at Emory University in Atlanta, GA. Learn more about what the performers feel about the music they are performing:

Melissa White

Melissa White, alum, violin
IV. Presto agitato from Sonata No. 3 in D minor by Johannes Brahms
This movement makes me feel like I’m in a constant battle against the pianist, but it is this struggle that makes the passion of the movement carry over to the audience. The battle happens rhythmically (doubles verses triplets), dynamically, as well as passionately.

Xavier Foley, 15, double bass
I. Allegro moderato from Concerto No. 2 in B minor by Giovanni Bottesini
When I play this piece, I think about climbing a mountain with many obstacles. It’s very unique compared to other pieces…it’s all about how you express yourself.

Ming Wilson, 14, piano
Hungarian Rhapsody No. 6 by Franz Liszt
This is a piece that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end. As I play it, I really focus on trying to bring out the differences in between each section.

Bryan Anderson, 16, Music Two Share – piano
IV. Final from Suite for Flute & Piano, Op. 34
This piece is a classic good vs. evil conflict. I think the most important thing about this piece is to go for the one turning point–the place where Widor finally rips free of the suspenseful sequences and dives into his conclusion section.

Hally Davidson, 16, Music Two Share – flute
The opening of the Widor sounds very angry and stormy. I have this feeling of driving rain and thunder and trees swaying in a storm when I play it. This piece overall reminds me of the March of the Ents, from Tolkien’s The Two Towers.) I’ve never heard any other piece have such energy and excitement concentrated in the first bars.

“Mimpi” saya masih berlanjut.

Well.. Ada lagi orang lain. Hari ini. Yang entah mengapa tidak seramah seharusnya. Hah! And i feel enough.

But, however.. Makasih Allah. (Amin).

Oh iya Allah.. Saya ingin punya waktu untuk main-main dong.. Sekedar melemaskan otak saya yang belakangan berkerut.. Boleh ya.. ^_^
