The Roaming Dragon is the rock star of the Vancouver food truck scene and has been on quite the roll

They’ve recently brought Chef Tina Fineza on in a consulting role to update and relaunch their menu on both the street food and catering sides of their business. A bold move for something that was already a success but Jason Apple and Jory Simkin. Roaming Dragon co-owners, are always looking to improve and grow their empire on wheels.

The venue for this relaunch was District 319 on Main St between Hastings and Cordova, not a part of town I frequent but the space was super cool with Asian inspired décor that suited the event perfectly. The new food was a big hit as was their well known basil lychee lemonade with a shot of vodka added for adults only. This event really showed what an awesome job these guys do with their catering business.

It’s always great to see Jason and Jory, they’re really great people. Check them out for your next event! catering@roamingdragon.com

I hadn’t seen my friend and fellow foodie blogger Jill in quite some time. Usually we hit up the loc

I hadn’t seen my friend and fellow foodie blogger Jill in quite some time. Usually we hit up the local farmer’s market together, but this time we decided to do something different. She came up with the brilliant idea to organize a food truck crawl of some of the fabulous array of food trucks out and about downtown Vancouver. We each chose 4 trucks we wanted to go to, and she organized our day – map, hours of operation, order of trucks, etc.

We each had our own printed copy of the map, and Jill packed her “food truck crawl” kit – disposable knives and forks, napkins, toothpicks, wet wipes, and tupperware for leftovers. Pretty much everything you could possibly need for an afternoon filled with street eats!

We set out early (someone showed up at my house earlier than scheduled – I hadn’t even gotten the chance to put on a face yet!), and made our way into Vancouver on transit. The plan was to get downtown right when our first truck opened at 11 am.

Truck #1 – Arturo’s Mexico To Go

First on the tour – Arturo’s Mexico To Go, located at Waterfront Station. When we walked up to Arturo’s at 11:15 am, we were disappointed to see they hadn’t opened yet. So we sat and waited for about 15 min before the windows were open for business. This gave us plenty of time to peruse the menu and decide what our first taste of the day would be.

It also gave us time to interact with the random passersby on the street – like the strange man who came up to us and told us it was going to be his lucky day because he saw us two redheads. He then proceeded to ask if he could touch my hair…while he was already doing so. Jill lucked out, having her hair tied back. I resisted the urge to high five him in the face. But I digress…

Many of Arturo’s offerings fall into the “full meal deal” category. Seeing as this was the first of many stops of the day, I didn’t think filling up on a giant burrito would be in my best interest. That fact, coupled with the somewhat overcast grey day, lead me to choose the tortilla soup. Jill went the same route, but also picked up a Tacotino – she’s not working with a student budget like I am, so she can get all wild and crazy with her food truck orders

Someone is giving me some serious stink eye for taking her picture.

Jill got her order right away, but when I went to get my soup, they decided that it was actually not hot enough to serve, and took it back to reheat it more. Soon enough we were in possession of eats, and found a nice place to sit down near the cruise ships.

Jill was in charge of updating Twitter throughout the trip.

Arturo’s Totrilla Soup – Original. Flavourful. Mexican. ($4)

Since their description of the soup is pretty…useless…here are our thoughts. The soup had great flavour, nice spice (I ordered mine medium, and they added the required sauces/salsas to make it so). But it was thin, more like a broth. I always imagine tortilla soup to be thick and hearty, much like a stew. This soup would greatly benefit from some shredded chicken or beans and veggies. But I guess that’s what you get for $4.

Keepin’ it classy with melty cheese strings.

Tacotino – Original recipe from Pueblo, Mexico – we had to bring it home to Vancouver! Rotisserie pork, lime & chipotle sauce wrapped in a chica flour tortilla ($4.50)

Jill’s thoughts on the tacotino: enjoyed the caramelized onions but felt it was lacking something. More cheese & salsa would have been a good addition. Good value.

I managed to score a bite (okay, Jill offered me half), and thought it was a tasty little snack. I liked that it wasn’t swimming in chipotle flavour, as I find it overused so often. The caramelized onions really were the star – it would have been boring without them.

While we finished off our first street food bites, we were joined by this little guy.

Since we deemed the tortilla chips as simply unnecessary filler (hey, there was alot of food to come), we shared with him. He was ever so happy to help us out.

Truck #2 – Fresh Local Wild

A short walk up the street brought us to our next stop – Fresh Local Wild, located at Hastings & Burrard. This is not your typical food truck. They source their seafood from local fishermen, and other ingredients from ethical farms and sustainable wild harvest. This means they have an ever changing menu based on what’s currently in season. But what’s also unique about their truck is that it does not rely on petroleum-based fuels – instead they have converted a high efficiency diesel generator to use 100% vegetable oil. As their site says – they run on fish n’ chips! Oh yeah, and they are the only food truck in Vancouver with their own patio.

Sadly the patio was occupied when we got there, but that didn’t deter us from ordering something to eat.

Their menu items are generally all meant to be a meal, or at least more than just a nibble, so we decided it would be in our stomachs’ best interest to share something. As soon as I saw the oyster sandwich on the menu, I knew I needed to try it. Fortunately Jill didn’t object.

As we placed our order, the friendly gentleman behind the counter (sorry, I didn’t get his name), told us the oysters were harvested from…crap…somewhere on Vancouver Island (I can’t believe I’ve forgotten already), and highly recommended the sandwich. He even made sure they cut it in half for us, since we were sharing.

Buttermilk fried oysters with tartar sauce and lettuce in a whole wheat bun ($10)

Check out those perfectly battered and fried oysters. Deserves one more photo.

Oh man, this sandwich was good. It was so fresh (local, and wild!) – piping hot from the fryer, crispy, salty like the ocean, with creamy tartar sauce and the perfect bun. I really liked that the batter was thin and didn’t overpower the oysters. Not greasy at all. I could have eaten a whole one. I considered going back and getting another. It was probably the highlight of my day. Sure, it wasn’t cheap, but the quality of the ingredients completely justifies the price. If I worked downtown, it would be hard to not go here on a regular basis. I know I’ll be back to try out their fish and chips.

Truck #3 – Roaming Dragon

Our third stop on the tour was another short walk away at the corner of Robson and Burrard – Roaming Dragon. While I had sampled their offerings on another occasion, Jill had yet to try out probably the most famous (aside from Japadog) food truck in Vancouver. Just check out all the “street cred” they have received.

My plan was to just try the pork slider, since I had passed on it last time I was there. But they I remembered the fried rice balls ($3)…and had to add them to my order.

Mmm, rice balls. Sadly these were not quite as good as last time. Almost like they were overcooked, on the verge of being burnt on the outside. Jill felt they were over-hyped, which I can understand since they were not up to par from my last experience.

Chinese Pork Slider – Braised pork, cured in Asian spices, with pickled cucumbers and green onions, topped with hoisin sauce and served in a steamed bun ($3)

Although the anaemic looking steamed bun didn’t make for the best photos, it was the perfect vehicle for this little Asian inspired slider. You know those Chinese BBQ pork buns you can buy? Yeah, this tastes just like those, but with the addition of pickled veggies. Plus it’s cute because it’s a slider. I could see picking up a couple of these for lunch and being completely happy. Probably my 2nd favourite eat of the day.

Jill’s thoughts on the slider: BBQ pork slider was THE BEST. Perfect BBQ pork on a sticky and slightly sweet steamed bun with pickled veggies… very well balanced.

A very economical stop, as they have nothing on the menu over $6. Perfect for a snack or a full meal.

Truck #4 – Tacofino

We took a little digestion break after eating at Roaming Dragon. Food truck tours require conditioning! But wouldn’t you know it – we could see our next truck from our lunch location outside the courthouse. So we picked ourselves up, and made the short walk to the corner of Robson & Howe to check out Tacofino. This was on my “must visit” list after seeing them featured on Eat St., as well as hearing good things about them from other friends.

Tacofino actually has two trucks – the orange truck in the downtown core is the “taco” truck, while their blue truck located at Granville & Broadway is the “burrito” truck. Hence the taco-centric menu.

In keeping with my student budget, and wanting to balance my meat eats with vegetarian options, I decided to try out the black bean taco. And I had to order one of their chocolate diablo cookies – after seeing it raved about on TV, I needed to know what the hype was about. Jill went with the tuna ta-taco and a cookie.

While we waited for our orders, Jill also enjoyed the Lime-Mint Freshie – fresh squeezed lime + garden mint slushie ($4.50)

I may have scammed a little sip as well. We both thought it was very refreshing, with a heavy emphasis on the mint. A good pairing for Mexican eats I would say.

Black Bean Taco – refried black beans with sour cream, salsa fresca + feta cheese on a soft corn tortilla ($3.50)

I topped it with a little hot sauce, to give it an extra kick.

The sign of a good taco – super messy to eat.

After my attempt to eat the taco with my hands, I gave up and resorted to the fork and knife in my food truck tour kit (thanks Jill!). The taco was great – creamy black beans, salsa not overloaded with cilantro, and a nice salty, tangy kick from the feta cheese and sour cream. The corn tortilla added a bit of chew and texture to the taco. I was glad I added hot sauce, as I felt it didn’t have a huge amount of spice. For some reason I was given two tortillas (not sure if this is standard), but I chose to only eat one to avoid getting too full.

Tuna Ta-Taco – sesame-soy albacore tuna, lightly seared with wasabi-ginger mayo, shredded cabbage, mango salsa, and seaweed salad on a fire toasted flour tortilla ($6.50)

Jill’s thoughts: Delicious. Very light and fresh tasting. Addition of seaweed on top was surprisingly good. A bit expensive.

Chocolate Diable Cookie – a fudgy chocolate cookie with fresh ginger & chili, milk chocolate chunks and salty sprinkle ($2.50)

As much as I wanted to bite into this masterpiece of cookie bakery, I refrained and saved it for later on at home. Okay, that’s a lie – I had a nibble while I was still downtown. Now, let me just state, I am not a lover of ginger in my sweets. So I was a wee bit hesitant on this cookie, but with all of the glowing reviews, felt it would be wrong to not give it a try. And you know, I was pleasantly surprised. All sorts of chocolately goodness going on – the chewy fudgy cookie plus the milk chocolate chunks on top. The ginger hits you first, with the chili following to give you a nice lingering subtle burn in the back of your throat. I would probably cut back on the ginger a bit (Jill agreed), and would have liked a more prominent saltiness to contrast the sweet cookie, but that wouldn’t keep me from going back to get another. Or perhaps making them myself – the recipe for their cookies just happens to be on the Eat St website!

Truck #5 – Cartel Taco

You’d have thought we’d had our fill of Mexican food by this time. Actually, the plan was not to hit up two taco trucks in a row. We were going to head to Coma Food Truck after our stop at Tacofino, but sadly we weren’t going to make it before they shut down for the day. So instead we made our way to Cartel Taco, which we actually found by accident as they had moved their location up to Dunsmuir & Granville.

Fortunately, their tacos are different from those at Tacofino. At Cartel Taco you will find Korean fusion tacos – beef or pork bulgogi served on corn tortillas with cilantro, onions, and kimchi. They had me at kimchi. And the price was right – $3 for one taco. Jill & I went with the beef bulgogi, and I skipped the cilantro.

Again with two tortillas. Not sure what that’s about – definitely not enough filling to warrant two.

I’m all for fusion food, but something with this was just off. We thought the beef bulgogi was tender and flavourful, with the nice pop of spice from the kimchi. But it just didn’t go with the corn tortilla. Perhaps a flour tortilla instead, or even better – just skip the fusion and serve it on rice. It was like the corn flavour was competing too much with the bulgogi. Good value for a snack, but not my cup of tea.

Truck #6 – The Juice Truck

Our route next led us to the corner of Water & Abbott in Gastown where one of my favourite trucks is located – The Juice Truck. Always an enjoyable experience. We spent some time chatting with the guys, telling them about our food truck tour, sharing our favourite spots, getting tips on what to try out next time. Oh yeah, and we ordered juice.

While Jill had The Strawberry (which I had on my first visit), I went with their special, The Strawberry Rhubarb Lemonade – rhubarb and strawberries with vanilla, ginger, mint, and lime ($5). I know, ginger twice in one day? Who am I? Again, I was leery, but Ryan gave me a taster of the lemonade, and the ginger was really very subtle. The mint was forefront with incredible sweetness from the strawberries. I was actually surprised at the lack of tartness in the lemonade – you’d think with lime and rhubarb you would get a rather tart drink, but this was sweet. Totally refreshing, and such a bright cheery colour. Love me some Juice Truck!

Jill actually wasn’t completely sold on her smoothie. She felt the texture from the cacao nibs was off-putting, and that the addition of agave was probably not needed.

This actually ended up being our last stop for the day. We had planned on 8 trucks total, but only made it to 6. One was due to their short business hours, and the other one we passed on our way to the train, but just weren’t in the mood for more food. In fact, I may have had a nap on the train on the way home. What can I say, I was on the verge of a street food coma.

The food truck tour was a really fun way to get out and try a variety of the food truck options now available in Vancouver. I’ve definitely found some new favourites that I will need to go back to, as did Jill. I would say my top eats from the tour were the oyster sandwich from Fresh Local Wild, the BBQ pork slider from Roaming Dragon, and the chocolate diablo cookie from Tacofino. What’s funny is that Jill picked the same 3 trucks as her favourites, with the only difference being she chose the tuna ta-taco from Tacofino over the cookie.

We now have plans for a food truck tour part 2 – we want to get to the trucks we missed out on this trip, as well as check out some others we passed in our travels. I’m not sure when it will happen, but you better believe I’ll document the whole experience for you again.

Do you ever eat at food trucks in your town? What’s the best street eat you’ve ever had?

Up until recently, your options for street eats in Vancouver were limited to the hot-dog-in-a-bun va

Up until recently, your options for street eats in Vancouver were limited to the hot-dog-in-a-bun variety. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy a good hot dog every so often, and I appreciate the tasty creativity that is Japadog just as much as the next person, but sometimes you are looking for a little something more in your street food offerings. Well, we finally have an array of unique food trucks throughout downtown, and today I decided to make the trek down for a little shopping and a little tasting. The hard part was deciding which truck to visit!

I ended up basing my decision on what was closest to the Skytrain station I was getting off at, and a truck I had seen before (therefore knowing exactly where they are located – it can be hard to track some of them down, especially when they move around). This also might be one of the better known food trucks in Vancouver – Roaming Dragon.

From their website, Roaming Dragon describes itself as follows: “This unique mobile restaurant takes beloved Pan-Asian favourites – fried rice, short ribs, steamed pork buns – and makes them absolutely soar.” With my love of Asian food, this was a great place to start my street food tasting experience.

The menu is short, but offers up a good variety of eats in two price ranges (note – only 2 of their menu items are vegetarian). Wanting to maximize the number of items I would get to try, I went with two from the $3 menu – the Korean Short Rib Taco and the Fried Rice Balls. Love the presentation and vibrant colours!

Fried Rice Balls – Chinese sausage, shrimp, chicken, bamboo shoots, mustard greens, and Japanese rice, breaded and deep fried. Served with curry and teriyaki aiolis.

I had to bite into these as soon as I sat down to enjoy my lunch.

Holy amazing Batman! These were crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside. I could have sworn they tasted like a really good mushroom risotto, yet I don’t see mushrooms anywhere on the menu description. No matter, they were awesome. I could have eaten 2, maybe 3 orders. Okay, maybe not 3 – I probably would have felt a little bloated after that, but the idea is still tempting. Do not pass up on the rice balls. Might just be the best balls to grace your lips Oh yes, I just went there.

But let’s not forget the taco.

Korean Short Rib Taco – Marinated beef short ribs, sesame sauteed spinach, bean sprouts, carrots and shiitake mushrooms, topped with Korean BBQ sauce and nori, served in a corn tortilla.

A little messy to eat, but again packed full of flavour. Tender beef, crunchy sprouts, and that nice hint of the sea from the nori. I love how they aren’t skimpy on the vegetables in their dishes – makes you feel like you are having a much more balanced meal, even with some deep fried balls.

I paired my food with their lychee basil lemonade (also $3).

Refreshing and delicious – I like the way the basil works with the lemon and lychee flavours. Keeps it from being too sweet, and adds that “gourmet” feel to the drink. Also of note – you get actual pieces of lychee in your lemonade, not just juice. They are rather fun to slurp up in the oversized straw, much like the jellies or tapioca in bubble tea. This would be a great drink to cool off on a hot summer day. Hopefully we’ll get one of those soon.

All in all, I would say my Roaming Dragon experience was a success – great eats, refreshing beverage, all enjoyed on the steps of the Vancouver Art Gallery for some entertaining people watching.

If you find yourself out and about, roaming the streets of Downtown Vancouver and you have a hankering for some delectable Asian cuisine, make your way over to Robson & Burrard and hit up Roaming Dragon. Your taste buds will thank you.

Now I just need to decide – which food truck will hold my next street eat taste experience?

Food bloggers get a lot of negative feedback from some restaurant types because we couldn’t possibly know what we’re talking about, we’re just bloggers. Not so I say, and my good pals at everyones favorite food truck, The Roaming Dragon, were gracious enough to let me have a crack at assisting them at a catering gig they had for Salt Spring Coffee at their Richmond roasting facility. I wasn’t sure what my job would be but I was willing to work hard and do my best while hopefully not dropping anything or embarrassing myself. I have a lot of respect for what Jory, Jason and The Roaming Dragon team do on a daily basis and I didn’t want to let them down.

The event was very cool, a DJ spinning smooth house music, coffee flavored beer and happy looking Salt Spring Coffee employees. Salt Sprig Coffee has a coffee education center in house and it sheds some light on how the coffee you drink gets into your cup. The space they occupy looks like it’s already getting too small which is great news as that means they’re busy! Salt Spring coffee deals in fair trade, organic coffee with some single origin and small “Micro-lot” roasts that get the coffee geek in me shaking with caffeinated happiness. We all know that Vancouver loves its premium coffee but this stuff is a step above the rest. I sampled a little bit before the Dragon arrived and I was very impressed.

So my job was basically running food from the truck to the tables inside the event, making sure that each of the 4 dishes were well represented and clearing away empty plates. The four dishes were Chicken Karaage, Tuna Tare Tare, Tofu Caprese and Porkbelly Sliders which used Salt Spring Coffee to flavor the pork, so good…The Chicken was the big mover with people hovering around the table and devouring large amounts as soon as the plate left my hand, I can’t blame them though as it’s my favorite too. The Dragon crew were very tolerant of me and all seemed to be having fun while pumping out Pan Asian goodies from their kitchen on wheels. Really impressive given the cramped quarters.

The Vancouver Observer was also on hand documenting my efforts to clear the names of food bloggers the world over. There will be a photo montage with audio coming soon to VO and when it does I’ll be sure to let everyone know. I think I held my own but to be honest they were pretty easy on me. Jason and Jory, co owners of the Dragon made a donation to Variety BC to thank me for my help which was a great gesture as I was fully prepared to do it for free. Check out the rest of the pictures below, hopefully you’ve eaten at The Roaming Dragon before, if not you should…soon.

Last year Vancouver decided to give the green light to a number of different food cart venders. Although I have heard there are some great ones out there I unfortunately have yet to check them out. This particular event sparked my interest as two of the more successful food cart vendors, Roaming Dragon and The Re-Up BBQ will be providing food.

Check out sloppress.com for more details.

…and while you’re at Walrus go ahead and pick up your self some much needed whiskey stones:

Roaming Dragon Food Truck

West Georgia Street (between Thurlow & Burrard)

The long-awaited debut of the Roaming Dragon Food Truck’s downtown location last week was a hit. I hope this means they will be staying on West Georgia Street for a while because after only one visit, I have become utterly addicted to their pork belly sliders. My two favourite items in Chinese cuisine are soft and fluffy steamed buns and tender pork meat. Roaming Dragon’s pork belly sliders are definitely a creative combination of two foods that already taste great on their own; in one compact package, the sliders are explosively tasty. The fresh, soft buns soak up all the salty and flavourful juices from the moist, tender pork belly. A perfect dollop of Hoisin sauce binds the small sandwich together, rounding out the flavours, adding a sweetness to the meat. Sliced cucumber also adds some freshness and colour to the slider. The sliders are small but filling. Even though, I don’t know if I can ever get enough of those buns. They are like pillows, each cushioning a perfectly cooked piece of pork.

The other item that I tried was the Japanese chicken karaage. The chicken was crispy on the outside and soft and tender on the inside with just the right amount of sauce glazing the surface of the chicken with sweet saltiness.

Roaming Dragon Fried Rice Balls, Vancouver

The service is impeccable, I liked that the server asked for my name after my order. When orders were ready, customer names were called out instead of the name of the item. This small detail was a nice personal touch, making the street food experience a little bit more intimate. The menu prices were pretty reasonable also, any two items were charged at $10, three items went for $15. I think it’s a steal for the gourmet quality of food and the chance to dine outside in the prettiest part of downtown Vancouver. I will definitely visit the Roaming Dragon again. I wish there was something sweet on the menu though – maybe sweet custard buns or mini egg tarts.

The Vancouver street food scene has been a sad, repetitive song played over and over for years. The Lyrics were all about hot dogs in the summer and chestnuts in the winter, boring (even if the hot dogs have Japanese fixins’ ). Thankfully those days appear to be over with the City of Vancouver’s new policy on food trucks. Food trucks have been a big part of other cities culinary scene for years with colorful trucks rolling all over town with everything from taco’s in LA to fine French food in NYC.

Vancouver’s first Food truck is the Roaming Dragon, serving pan asian delights out of a state of the art truck in various locations throughout the city. On Saturdays you can find them at the Trout Lake Farmers Market at John Hendry Park in East Van from 9-2 (check out their website for other locations and times http://www.roamingdragon.com/ ). The family and I headed down to East Van on the first rainy day in a month to see what the Roaming Dragon had to offer, and I am happy to say that we were not disappointed.

We met Jason and the rest of the crew in their slick looking truck and placed our order, which was done on an Iphone that was synced with their POS (point of sale) system, very cool. We ordered the duck confit salad, the pork belly sliders, Korean short rib tacos, chicken karaage, rice balls and some lychee and basil lemonade. While the food was being prepared I was given a quick tour of the truck and it really is a gourmet kitchen on wheels. The food was all amazing, the duck confit salad was perfect with orange and watermelon pieces that balanced well against the salt of the duck, The pork belly sliders were on steamed Asian buns with cucumber (it might have been pickled?) and green onion and were unique (in a good way) and very tasty. The tacos were great with shredded carrots and nori which was the only thing I wasn’t a huge fan of as it took a little away from the taste of the short ribs, a very minor problem though. The chicken karaage was as good as I’ve had anywhere in the city and the rice balls were fantastic, nice and crisp on the outside and soft on the inside with a hint of cumin or something south Asian that really gave great flavor. The lemonade was the single best lemonade I have ever had, with the basil and lychee adding a grown up character to this popular street side beverage.
