Rob Halford offers the most highly anticipated Christmas album of the season Winter Songs, another fantastic contribution from the world of heavy metal to the most wonderful time of the year.

To be honest, I did not feel the holiday vibe in the beginning as I did on A Twisted Christmas and We Wish You A Metal Xmas. However by the fourth car ride to work with Winter Songs, the metallic yuletide spirit orchestrated by Halford III forced itself upon me in a somewhat uncomfortable manner, that wasn’t as far as a violation of my soul, but not far from it.

While there are a couple of gems on the first half of the disc such as the blistering opener “Get Into The Spirit,” ironically it is the second half that was responsible for this hostile spiritual abduction. The last five tracks consist of brilliant interpretations of the Christmas ballads “Come All Ye Faithful” and “Oh Holy Night.” It is on these slower tracks that Halford allows his voice to shine bright, resulting in a very moving listening experience.

I am sure there are many metal heads that would disagree and argue that Winter Songs is not a true Halford record because of the ballads, but you simply cannot discount great music because it is not as heavy as “Painkiller.”

In addition to the devastating tunes in the beginning and the aforementioned ballads, “Christmas For Everyone” features an upbeat and quirky boogie that will even please your girl, hence the title.

Winter Songs is the must own holiday album of the year. If you have difficulty embracing it in the beginning, do not give up. Within several listens, the Metal God will once again own your soul. It is your responsibility to give it that chance -Meds

The intro to the new book “Full Metal Jackie Certified: The 50 Most Influential Heavy Metal Songs Of The ’80s And The True Stories Behind Their Lyrics” describes the joy of vinyl — in a time before the Internet — with perfect sentiment.

“Listening to a metal album used to be an event. Without the digital availability of information on the Internet, hearing an album for the first time was the single source of make-believe, a direct connection to the imagination. Fans would slit the shrink wrap and carefully slide the vinyl LP from the cardboard cover. The paper sleeve would rest in cross-legged laps while the listener absorbed the lyrics, word for word, studying them and staring at the photographs and artwork to make the songs come alive in their mind’s eye.”

Of course, this could be describing any album. And the experience is just not the same with a new CD.

There is also a foreward by Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine. Who could be a better person to describe those metal times than Dave Mustaine? Maybe Lars Ulrich. But, post-Napster, it comes out better from Dave Mustaine.

One other thing: that’s a fantastic photo by Mark Weiss of Rob Halford and KK Downing on the cover (cropped, of course, just right) of Full Metal Jackie Certified.

Eddie Riggs

Desenvolvedora: Double Fine Prod.

Consoles: PS3 e Xbox360

Eddie, Ophelia no Deuce

(trecho retirado do site Baijaki jogos)

A cover “Army Of Me” Björk nagrali naprawdę imponujący.

Honor zagranicy znakomicie obronili weterani z Cheap Trick. Czasu i palców szkoda.

Chad Smith’s Bombastic Meatbats, to poboczny projekt perkusisty Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Zmęczyła mnie i znudziła płyta “Night Is The New Day”. Niefajność “Night Is The New Day” to brak tego czegoś, co powoduje, że chce się do materiału wracać. Ale z radością bym się dowiedział, jak jego zdaniem “Night Is The New Day” wypada na przykład z “Last Fair Deal Go Down”?

Rob Halford niedawno określił się chrześcijańskim heavymetalowcem. Naprawdę, powiedział to w wywiadzie radiowym. Do dziś pamiętam wersję “White Christmas” Binga Crosby’ego, w której gardło darła niesamowicie Sabina Classen z Holy Moses. Ratuje ją parę weselszych, luzackich, rockandrollowych momentów i otwierający całość “Get Into The Spirit”. Gdybym celebrował Wigilię, chętnie widziałbym przy stole Roba Halforda, ale wolałbym, aby zamiast piosenek z trzeciej płyty zaśpiewał mi na przykład “Resurrection”, “The One You Love To Hate”, czy jakiś kawałek Judasów. Byle nie z “Nostradamusa” J

Czym byłoby życie bez przerw na odpoczynek? W ostatnich dniach bardziej filmowy niż książkowy i niekoniecznie związany z nowościami. Polecił mi dwa sensacyjne amerykańskie obrazy – “Władza pieniędzy” (Even Money) i “Błękitny proszek” (Powder Blue).

Halford – Halford III – Winter Songs (2009, Metal God Records)

9. “Oh Holy Night” … 4:09
10. “Come All Ye Faithful” … 2:27

Band:
Rob Halford – Vocals
Roy Z – Guitar
Mike Chlasciak – Guitar
Mike Davis – Bass
Bobby Jarzombek – Drums
Ed Roth – Keyboard

Producer: Roy Z.

Seven years after the last studio effort from Halford, Rob & Company return with a… CHRISTMAS ALBUM ?! Yes, it’s weird, it’s shocking, it’s true. Even more shocking — it’s actually pretty good.

I was extremely excited to discover 2009 would bring us new Halford music. When Rob rejoined Judas Priest, the band went inactive but there were still countless live albums, reissues and compilations being issued so it is nice to see and hear new material from the group, even if most of it is covers of Christmas songs. I find it odd that Rob chose to let this be the third studio release from Halford though. A Christmas CD? Really? Well, if Twisted Sister can do it, surely the Metal God can!

I’m hearing a lot of resistance to the idea of Rob Halford doing Christmas songs, but maybe some of that is stemming from having his solo band’s name on it (who were one of metal’s most promising acts of this decade, IMO). Maybe Rob wants to turn Halford into the next Trans-Siberian Orchestra? Maybe if he stuck ‘ROB HALFORD’ on the cover instead of just ‘HALFORD’ metalheads could accept it more, though I admit it is a bit of an out there concept to wrap your head around.

Clearing away any preconceived notions I might have had, I’m really enjoying this album. It’s Christmas, it’s hard rock, it’s heavy metal, it’s ROB HALFORD! How can you go wrong? I’m sorry for ever doubting you, Mr. Halford! The original songs (“Get Into the Spirit”, “Christmas For Everyone”, “I Don’t Care”, “Light of the World”) are pretty good, with “Get Into the Spirit” easily being the best of that bunch but what is really surprising is just how good Halford’s take on these traditional Christmas songs can be.

There is no doubt this is the Metal God at work, but unlike some rock/metal acts who do Christmas songs, Halford doesn’t try to impose himself too much over the songs. In short, you’re not going to confuse “Oh Holy Night” or “Come All Ye Faithful” with “Painkiller” or “Resurrection”!

This is a great addition to my growing Christmas rock collection and I have a feeling it’s going to be getting a lot of airtime at home and in my car this holiday season… and for many more to come!

Highlights: “Get Into the Spirit”, “We Three Kings”, “Oh Come O Come Emanuel”, “Winter Song”, “What Child Is This?”, “I Don’t Care”, “Oh Holy Night”, “Come All Ye Faithful”

This album was a soundtrack to 2005 for me! Despite owning Demolition, I thought Priest with Tim “Ripper” Owens was merely “okay”, but at the same time, I was loving what Rob Halford was doing in his solo band. When it was finally announced Halford was back in Priest after a 13 years absence, I was really excited about it (though a bit disappointed that his band would be put on hold).

Much to my surprise, the lone single from the album, “Revolution”, actually got a fair amount of radio play in my area. I’ve got good memories of blasting it real loud in the truck I was driving while doing lawn care whenever it came on. It’s a great track and definitely my favorite on the album. It’s a bit modern, but a bit classic Priest as well.

Roy Z, who produced Halford (the band) produced here as well and he does good job of not letting this become a lame nostalgia album as he combines classic and modern metals sounds. “Judas Rising” and then “Deal With The Devil” are definitely old school Priest and after the awesome “Revolution”, “Worth Fighting For” is my second favorite song and it has an ’80s Priest vibe sounding like something could have come from Ram It Down or Defenders of the Faith. “Wheels of Fire” takes it back even further, sounding like something they might have done in the late ’70s!

Lyrically and conceptually, the album is supposed to be somewhat of a sequel to 1976’s Sad Wings of Destiny, but a lot of lyrical references are made to other albums and songs throughout the band’s career, which is a really cool thing to pick up on if you know your Priest history.

This album was pretty well-received by metal fans across the land, but looking back, I think I like this album even more than I did back when it was new and it easily trumps the two Ripper albums (sorry, Tim).

There were two versions available upon release. You could get the “DualDisc” CD or the CD/DVD combo. Of course, I went for the DVD combo which features a few live performances.

Highlights: “Judas Rising”, “Deal With The Devil”, “Revolution”, “Worth Fighting For”, “Wheels of Fire”, “Hellrider”

(Playstation 3 & XBox 360 – Reviewed on XBox 360)

Pros
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful graphics with a killer soundtrack
Decent story, considering how bad it could have been
Surprising mesh of beat’em up/platforming and real-time strategy
How many people collaborated with the voice acting?!
Two words: Jack Black

Cons
Controls have a lot to be desired, especially while driving
To understand the story completely, you have to unlock 12 storytelling relics
The RTS, while oddly refreshing, is WAY too difficult for beginners, even on easy
Where’s the jump button?

Jack Black: Movie star, rock star, metal head.

Well, now you can add badass warrior to his repertoire, courtesy of Brutal Legend

Brutal Legend has had gamers anticipated for a full-on revolution of metal since news of its release was announced. When I first heard about it, I was instantly hooked as well. Tim Schafer, the mastermind behind Psychonauts, may have been working on this game since ‘05, but his work has paid off – infinite times over.

I won’t bore you with the in-depth story; although, I admit full-heartedly, I skipped studying for my Japanese mid-term because the story made me want to keep on playing until my body gave in to sleep in mid-level. But, here’s a quick summary: Eddie Riggs is a roadie for a band that’s about as metal as the Jonas Brothers. While saving a band member, he gets hurt and has blood pour into his belt buckle. The belt buckle transforms the stage into a demon, which then obliterates everyone around.

Eddie wakes up and finds himself in a future in which demons have enslaved human kind and, subsequently, their metal. Eddie, along with Ophelia, escapes the emperor’s castle (where he woke up) and goes back to the base of human resistance. From there, Eddie helps lead revolution throughout the metal-deprived land.

But, enough beating around the bush. Here’s how the game tallies up, kiddies:

Gameplay – 4/5
If you played Kingdom Hearts for the Playstation 2, you’ll definitely know what I’m talking about when I say that this is the one of the most eclectic game in terms of gameplay. One moment, you’re blowing up demon-driven motorcycles, the next you’re slaying 80’s hair-metal demons, and the next you’re plotting out how to keep a legion of undead emo kids from destroying your set. This has just about anything for everyone.

The one thing I have to complain about, though, is the implementation of real-time strategy. Sure, in the beat’em up levels, commanding some cronies is good strategy, but in the “stage battle” levels, it’s just annoying. The very last level will probably what keeps most beginners and casual gamers from completing the game, while Warcraft and Age of Empires junkies will find it either fun or mind-numbingly boring.

Another complaint is the boss battles – they’re too easy! On the last level (before /the final bss), I died ten times. On the final boss (I’m playing on normal, mind you), I beat him in five minutes with only a couple melee power ups and no magic power ups.

And, like every other hyped-up game, the main single-player quest is too short. Granted, it’s not WAY too short, as in Fable. But, nevertheless, you can beat this in a weekend, one day if you want to commit to doing nothing all day. Also, unless you unlock certain relics (explained later), the story doesn’t make as much sense.

There are various side quests and unlockable relics that can be used to power up your character (trust me, you really don’t need them), but the side quests are just cut and paste from level to level, so they’re really more for if you want to unlock Every. Single. Item in the item shop.

Speaking of which, for each main or side mission you complete and each special relic you unlock, you receive credits that you can redeem in Metal Forge (which you access after unlocking an entrance through a huge engine). In there, you can get better attacks, upgrades to your guitar, axe or car, unlockable paint jobs for your car and busts to be put on Mt. Rockmore (which I have yet to find).

To unlock these relics and the Metal Forge entrances, you have to use a special solo. In fact, there are several solos you learn that’ll help you along your quest. After accessing the solo, all you do is press the prescribed button as the timing bar swings by.

The good thing is – you catch onto everything quickly.

Graphics – 5/5
Seriously, play this on an HDTV. If you don’t have one, go to a friend who does and play it there. If no one you know has one, go to Wal-Mart, hook it up to the largest one you can find and play it there.

The graphics on this game are… wow. Where do I begin? How can I begin? I could spend all night talking about it, but let me put it like this: it is THE BEST looking game I’ve played since Oblivion. Details are flawless, character models are amazing and look like their real-life counterparts (even Tim Curry, notice the resemblance between Frank N. Furter from The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Doviculus?)

Sound – 5/5
With a rockin’ soundtrack from the best metal has to offer and awesome voice acting from the aforementioned Jack Black as Eddie Riggs and Tim Curry as Doviculus, voice actress Jennifer Hale as Ophelia, (The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, Metroid Prime 3 & Soul Calibur IV) and voice actor Zach Hanks as Lars (Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood and the upcoming Final Fantasy XIII), as well as Lemmy (Motorhead), Rob Halford (Judas Priest), Lita Ford (The Runaways) and The Prince of Darkness himself Ozzy Osbourne, there is nothing ill I can say about the sound. Truly, truly flawless.

Controls – 3.5/5
I only have two complaints about the controls. The first one is that there’s no jumping action. Enough said on that note.

The second thing is the controls of the car you can drive – it’s horribly tight. Like, tighter than Scrooge tight. Like Spandex on a sumo wrestler tight. Add in the nitro boosts, and it’s near-impossible to control.

Apart from that, camera maneuvers nicely and everything else works just like a charm. Just not enough for a 4/5.

Replay Value – 3.5/5
The single-player mode replay value, with the exception of replaying on harder difficulties, is restricted only to completing any remaining side missions and unlocking any remaining relics. Apart from those things, there is none.

There is a multiplayer though, but there’s two things wrong with this picture:

1. It only consists the RTS “Stage Battles”
2. I can’t figure out how to access it, or if it’s local multiplayer or online.

Big fail, y’all. BIG fail.

Overall – 4/5

Buy? – Hold on, cowboy from Hell
While this is a REALLY good game, I doubt you’d want to pay upwards of $60 to own such a short game. If you need to own this game, I’d wait until it drops considerably in price, unless you can find it at an amazing deal worthy of the gods, themselves.

Rent? – That’s your best bet

Even with mid-terms, studying for said mid-terms and playing another game at the same time, I still managed to beat this game on normal difficulty in about three days. Ranking in at roughly 20 hours (give or take a few), it’s perfect for a weekend binge or for a slow week of homework. Besides, you can beat the game in a week for $7 at Hastings as opposed to paying a little under $60 in store or on Amazon – the scales lean more towards renting.
