The other night I was hanging out with a good buddy of mine, Rob. Rob and I go way back… We go back to the days of middle school. We were young morons that grew up together and lived life in the fast lane together. The stories could go on forever. So we got our families together for a fun evening of hanging out and catching up. We ended up playing cards but then the card playing digressed into talking… Which was awesome… So I started building… My hands are always doing something… Got to keep them busy… I started building a card house… Didn’t get very far. But then I thought about a little experiment… Let’s see how many cards I can get on top of this card structure. Here’s a few pictures…

Besides the obvious skill involved in getting all of those cards to balance there was a vital and necessary element to the whole production; the foundation.

Foundations are essential… It doesn’t matter what you are doing… Foundations are vital…

They are vital in:

card houses

real houses

friendships

marriages

jobs

school work

sports

It doesn’t just stop there. Foundations are essential in your relationship with God and your understanding of Him! With the simple card hut in mind, what kind of foundation are you establishing in the spiritual corners of your life? Do you find yourself strengthening those foundations? Are you spending time reading God’s word? Are you finding times of quiet where you can pray and commune with God? Are you finding times to be silent before the whole world and ask God to speak to you? Are you finding times to spend with other christians so that you can encourage one another/build each other up/pray for one another and sharpen one another? It’s these moments and efforts that help us strengthen our foundation.

Let’s try it.

~Peter

Edit : Konuya Man City-Jeremy Hélan-Rennes de eklendi. Biri buna dur desin artık!!!

Local independent comic publisher Chalkline Studios will be releasing the the third comic anthology

Local independent comic publisher Chalkline Studios will be releasing the the third comic anthology Unleashed. I sat down with founders Rob Jones and David King to find out what Unleashed is all about…

OB: Give us an brief overview of Chalkline Studios…

DK: Chalkline is a group of up and coming comic book artists and writers that got together to have an outlet to create our own stories.
RJ: ChalkLine Studios is a group of artists here in Jacksonville who all wanted to put out some comic books, so rather then do it on our own we joined up and developed the anthology book “Unleashed”.

OB: Tell us how you guys got the idea to start Chalkline Studios…

DK: I think the idea came from all of us hanging out at Comics & Classics (R.I.P) Everyone just hung out and talked comics and did sketches. The next natural progression was to start creating our own stories. Rob had already self published, so we latched on to him and got started.
RJ: The group started when our friends opened a comic shop at the beach (Which unfortunately has since closed) and we all started to meet up there. We all sat around and talked about doing something together and then finally we stopped talking and started drawing! Book 1 was completed pretty much on the tables of the comic shop and at the Mudville Grill (Where Beach and Atlantic meet) where we have our Wednesday night get-togethers. If your reading this and are a local artist interested in comics feel free to stop by- We’re there every Wednesday around 8!

OB: Tell us about “Unleashed”…How did you guys come up with the name(for both Chalkline and Unleashed)?

RJ: I think it was David who came up with ChalkLine… He can tell ya more about that one! I think I came up with Unleashed, but again it’s hard to tell since we were floating so many ideas at the time… Some of the rejected ones may show up at another time though… Take Luck Studios, or Poor Precious… Great names!!!
DK: We wanted to do an anthology book, because one team doing a full 22 page book is very tough. We also wanted everyone to get a chance to be in print. I think I came up with the name Chalkline, I honestly don’t remember where it came from. We seemed to have a lot of darker horror type stories, so I think the idea came from a crime scene chalk outline. Unleashed is the book itself, and I think Rob came up with that name, because there is a lot of new talent being unleashed with this book.

OB: What are the future plans for the company?

DK: Well we have 3 completed books in our first year. That is big accomplishment for a start up studio, our next step is national distribution. Rob and I have already made some progress in that area and we should be getting that started with our fourth book. We also are looking at possibly putting out some trades and collections. I don’t want to sprint before we walk, but there is some exciting things coming up!
RJ:The future plans for ChalkLine are to continue doing anthology books and to collect the completed stories into trades or stand-alone comics when there’s enough material. The next big step is to get national distribution, which we are in the process of doing now so we should have books on store shelves nationwide by years end! I wish I could say that we have a grand plan for how the books come together but really when someone shows up to our meetings with a cool idea it basically comes down to how many pages are going to be in each issue. Issue 3 was interesting because we had so many stories come in that we had to bump our 2 regular stories (GearShift Jitters and my story Perfect Storm) to the next issue.

OB:How many artists do you have contributing to the comic? What are some of the recurring stories/characters?

DK: Actually right now, we have more writers than artists, that is very rare! I think we have about 6 artists and about 10 or 11 writers. So the artists in our group work their drawing hands to the bone! The only two stories that are reoccurring are Perfect Storm, by Rob Jones, and Gearshift Jitters, by Cesar Corderro.

OB: What do you guys do to promote the comics?

DK: We make convention appearances to promote the book. We also link our Myspace to any site that the individual studio members have. Once we get in the Distribution catalog, I’m going to get the phone and start pushing the book to any comic shop that will listen.
RJ: To promote the comics we try to attend as many conventions as we can, as well as publicize them on our individual web sites (Oscarandsid.com, perfectstormpublishing.com), myspace pages, facebook pages, and blogs.

OB: What is the convention atmosphere like as a independent publisher?

DK: It’s pretty cool, it’s kind of surreal to be sitting on the other side of the table. It’s a long weekend though, you really do get worn out by Sunday. I really enjoy interacting with the fans that come by. When you draw a comic book or comic strip, you don’t get much interaction with your fan base. This is a great way to get an idea of where you stand!
RJ: Conventions are both fun and hard work at the same time. Fun that you get to see people that you don’t see often and meet artists who’s work you admire, but also hard work because your constantly selling- Pushing your book and yourself to new people who don’t really know who you are yet. If your not good at that it’s very stressful- It’s no problem though for David…

OB:Which is your favorite convention so far?

DK: It has to be Heroes in Charlotte! It is just about comics not the Anime thing. It also seems to be a convention that is for artists to be fans! It’s the best by far!
RJ: My favorite convention by far is HeroesCon in Charlotte. It’s a fun, family run show where everybody is there to have a good time and it shows. Other good shows include the Pittsburgh show and our own MegaCon, held in Orlando in February/March. They are trying out a second show this year August 22 and 23rd and it’s the last show of the season for most of us so your readers should definitely come out- It’s a great time!!!

OB:When are your next appearances?

DK: Heroes is this coming weekend in Charlotte. Our next convention will be Mini Megacon in Orlando, That is this August. I think we are also working on some local comic shop appearances.
RJ: Well, our next appearance is HeroesCon in Charlotte next weekend (June 19-21) where we will be debuting issue 3, then August in Orlando where the plan is to have issue 4. I will be heading up to the Pittsburgh show in September, but as far as the whole group I think Heroes and Mini-Mega in August are our only 2 shows left for the year.

OB: Tell us about Oscar and Sid.

DK: Oscar & Sid is my daily web comic. I have posted around 215 strips, and there is brand new one 7 days a week! Oscar & Sid has their first ever collection coming out this summer. It is going to be called, Oscar & Sid: And it Was Good. I am in talks with a few different syndication companies to be published in a few newspapers, here’s hoping that works. I’m also getting interviewed for the Florida Times Union this week, so check out the website and I will link the interview to it. My site is www.oscarandsid.com TELL A FRIEND!!

OB:Thanks for taking the time to talk to the Outer Box!-eb5k

Recently, April Smith had the amazing opportunities to learn more about video editing with Rob Jones, a Vancouver Music Writer.

Please see his Music Review site at http://www.clippernolan.wordpress.com

With much thanks to Rob Jones and his patience, please view our short film called “Industry”

Using a Nokia N95 cameraphone, April Smith follows a bee’s journey as it follows its instinct to make sweet honey from flowers

“Industry” is 2 minutes and 15 seconds

ABSTRACT

Rules, Norms and Web 2.0: Etiquette in an Era of Evolutionary Social [Dis]Organization

Etiquette is frequently seen as a constraining set of behavioral rules, delineating what behaviors are appropriate within a certain social arena and which are not. But in a context of online multiverses, each with its own culture and demographic, what is truly the “right” thing, and how can we know it? Culture clashes and rapid evolution of social norms are ubiquitous in social media: why? What is appropriate etiquette? Is it portable across platforms? What are the ‘right’ kind of rules and norms in an unruly arena such as the online social media world? The participants in this panel will engage in a conversation about what constitutes etiquette, whether or not it relates to a moral imperative, whether it emerges as self-appointed leaders create specific sets of norms and discuss the evolution of etiquette in emergent social media. The implications for codes of behavior and etiquette in Web 2.0 are also discussed.

Many thanks to Chef Gerry Kleinhout’s own personal warm hospitality and attentive staff at the St Regis Bar and Grill helped to make a stress free and successful Vancouve Bloggers MeetUp.

Below is a photo of Chef Gerry Kleinhout graciously giving April Smith cheesecake after filming an informative evening of social media etiquette. The lucky folks who were able to sample the cheesecake remarked that it was very delicious!

Brought to you by the People from Cossette West.

A gathering of digital-savvy marketing and communications thought-leaders from across North America sharing ideas on how to stay competitive in the ever-shifting digital landscape. This year we focus on digital branding through social media and why you should integrate it into your marketing strategy…starting now.

____

KEYNOTE SPEAKER Obama’s Unsung Hero

DAVID PLOUFFE, Campaign Manager, Obama for America

After winning the election on November 4, 2008, President Obama called Plouffe “the unsung hero of this campaign, who built the… best political campaign, I think, in the history of the United States of America.” Credited with achieving one of the biggest upsets in American political history, his campaign generated a brand loyalty program with unprecedented success. Plouffe shares with the audience the election story and the process of developing a winning social media strategy that inspired millions to engage in the Obama campaign.

December 2008 - After volunteering for the Cornish Chough Project in 2005 I thought a televised doc

December 2008 -

After volunteering for the Cornish Chough Project in 2005 I thought a televised documentary tracking the spread of the species throughout the county would be a suitable topic.

February 2009 - A search of interviewees -

- RSPB – Background of the project, details of the long term goals, monitoring the species.

- National Trust – Livestock grazing on the Lizard etc to increase suitable feeding sites.

- Natural England.

- Chough Watch Volunteers – volunteers who watch the breeding choughs 24 hours a day.

- Paradise Park Chough Project – captive breeding individuals that may someday be released.

- Population Ecologist - if possible, chough specific!

- Farmers – who are part of the Cornish Chough Project – what are they expected to do?

Choughs at the Lizard (www.cornwall-birding.co.uk)

April/ May 2009 – The next step…

After submitting my MA proposal I visited the Lizard and filmed general shots of the area, flora and fauna and interviewed two of the Chough Project volunteers. Special thanks to Claire Mucklow, Ashley Powell, Rob Jones, Helen and Andrew Macdonald. I also spent a night watching the chough nest and ‘protecting’ it from potential egg thieves. This involved spending a six hour shift in a shed on the Lizard Peninsula.

While also obtaining over one hour of footage and seeing the birds I would be chasing around Cornwall this summer, I learnt a lot more about the direction of my documentary.

- Three pairs are attempting to nest this year – all the birds have originated from the pair of choughs which bred for the first time in 2002.

- What would be the best way to increase the population – let them breed naturally? Hope some birds will arrive in Cornwall from Wales or France, like the four birds in 2001? Introduce some birds from captive collections?

- I was unaware of the cultural importance of the chough in Cornwall and the dedication of volunteers and the RSPB to the birds was surprising but certainly encouraging. As an environment enthusiast I think it is great to see.

Here is the first of six interviews that I am doing about each artist that is participating in the 2nd Annual Drawing for Life Marathon coming up on April 4th. Enjoy the interview and please click on the flyer for more details about this wonderful event or visit “Logans Heroes” to pledge to our team of artists. You can submit your donation here! Thanks for your support! On to the interview with Rob and David-

1. What got you involved in the 2nd Annual Drawing for Life Marathon?

(David King) Logan Zawacki and I have been friends since before I can remember. He came to me last year and mentioned an idea he had for doing a 12 hour drawing marathon. He asked if I wanted to be involved and I jumped at the chance! My family has been affected by cancer, so I figure any thing I could do to help was good.

(Rob Jones) I met Logan and David last year just before the first Drawing for
Life Marathon and thought it was a great idea, so I wound up inviting
myself to the drawing session and did a few sketches. When they asked
me to actually participate this year I couldn’t say yes fast enough

2. So you will be drawing your heart out for 12hrs straight hours. What are you gonna do to stay awake and motivated?

(David King) Last year I really didn’t think it was going to be a big deal, but honestly, it is rough! I think this year I am gonna invest in Red Bull and just drink enough to start trembling, it might help my art!

(Rob Jones) Unlike A-Rod I work clean, so the most I’ll wind up with is maybe some root beer…

3. I understand you both have a big event coming up with Megacon…could you explain?

(David King) We do! A group of us comic geeks have started a little publishing company, ChalkLine Studios. We have two tables to debut our new book, Unleashed. It is nice to be on the other side of the table at a convention.

(Rob Jones) David, Logan and I are part of a group of artists here in
Jacksonville Called ChalkLine Studios, and we will be debuting our
first anthology book, Unleashed, at MegaCon this year. While there we
will be selling some sketch cards (Baseball card sized drawings) that
the ChalkLine guys and girls have been doing for the past few months
to raise a few more dollars for the relay.

4. We all love to draw, paint, sculpt, but, a lot of us have our horrid “day jobs” too. What do you all do during the day or do you have a dream job or a “dream like” job?

(David King) I have a horrid day job! I am an operations manager at a scaffold rental company. It is long hours and dreadfully boring, but I am able to get some art done at my “real” job so it’s not bad.

(Rob Jones)I have been lucky enough to work in comics for the past 5+ years,
so my day job as been to work in a studio with comics legend Dick
Giordano.

5. Relay for Life is an excellent event and Im grateful to be a part of it as Im sure you are as well. Are there any other charitable organizations that you all have worked with in the past?

(David King) I have never worked for any specific organization, but my Mom and I used to work with a child that had cerebral palsy. We helped his family with a physical therapy program that they did. It was amazing to work with him every weekend and to see the progress that he made!

(Rob Jones) Yes, I went to the Kubert School (Comic book college) for a short time, and then went to school for graphic design. I consider working with Dick an ongoing education because every day I work with him I learn something new! I’ve also been lucky enough to take classes taught by my favorite artist, Brian Stelfreeze, and had one-on-one sessions with him as well. An amazing education!

Church planting is a much talked about thing everywhere these days and Wales is no exception. There has been very few Church plants, those that came because of splits I don’t count here, in Wales over the past half century. The number of Welsh language plants have been even smaller. But planting is very much the vision, even the calling, of a man called David Ollerton who established WalesWide/CymruGyfan. I first heard about David through a good friend of mine who I met at University in Aberystwyth; John Derek Rees was bought up in his David’s Church, Rhiwbina Baptist in Cardiff. David has now moved on from Rhiwbina and is one of the leaders of a Church plant in Porthcawl, Grace Community Church, in addition to being visionary and director of WalesWide.

Here is a video of David sharing his vision:

WalesWide have got a conference coming up next month: ‘Church Planting and Strengthening Conference
 – Principles, models and examples
’; Thursday 12 March 2009, 10am to 4pm
Hope Community Church, Dolfor Road, Newtown, SY16 1JD. Speakers include Julian Richards, Marc Owen, Rob Jones and David Ollerton
. Seminars with Meirion Morris, Ian Parry, John Parkin, Darren Mayor and Mark Bennett with time for questions and answers.

It’s exiting stuff and I hope to attend the conference. Will I see you there?
