Jennifer’s Body (2009) ★★★ / ★★★★ I decided to see this horror-comedy about demonic possession

Jennifer’s Body (2009)
★★★ / ★★★★

I decided to see this horror-comedy about demonic possession and female sexuality not because of Megan Fox but because it stars Amanda Seyfried (“Mean Girls,” “Mamma Mia!”) and it was written by Diablo Cody (“Juno” and columnist on “Entertainment Weekly”). Seyfried must defend her town from a man-hungry Fox after an emo band (led by Adam Brody) who dabbles with the occult kidnaps her. At the same time, she must deal with her sometimes jealous boyfriend (Johnny Simmons) because he thinks there’s something unhealthy about his girlfriend’s relationship with Jennifer. The set-up is very simple and very clean but the journey to the finish was quite rough and sometimes unconventional (but in a good way). Apart from the whippersnapper and often downright clever and funny dialogue, “Jennifer’s Body” reminded me of the horror movies from the 1980s because it had a certain B-movie quality to it. Not to mention that the climax happened during a school dance. At times, it did surprise me because it offered certain insight regarding the dynamics between best friends; how one needs the other in order to feel better about herself, which begs the question on whether they were truly friends or if they were more like “frenemies.” The movie straddles that line really well so then there was this constant conflict between the two best friends even before Fox was turned into a demon. But the star here is not Fox (or her body), but Seyfried. She was able to be this character who was kind of a loser but a great person at heart, be sensitive and tough all at once. One main concern about this movie is that audiences will simply choose not to see it because they either hate Megan Fox for whatever reason (I think she’s one of the worst actresses in Hollywood right now but that’s not news) or label it as another “Juno” because of the modern pop culture dialogue. It’s really more than that because it’s a horror-comedy with a brain, which is very unlike straight (supposed) horror movies like Rob Zombie’s “Halloween II” or Patrick Lussier’s horrid “My Bloody Valentine.” If I were to throw out one major problem I had with this movie, I say it wasn’t scary enough to truly make classic horror fans to be impressed with it. Nevertheless, I still think “Jennifer’s Body,” directed by Karyn Kusama, is a good popcorn flick that lives up to its first line: Hell is a teenage girl.

“Rock Mother Fucker, Rock The Mother Fucker, Rock Mother Fucker, Yeah,” howled Rob Zombi

“Rock Mother Fucker, Rock The Mother Fucker, Rock Mother Fucker, Yeah,” howled Rob Zombie, while charismatically leading thousands of loyal fans through new song “Sick Bubble Gum,” at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom last night. Whenever Rob Zombie performs, one thing is always for certain, you will experience a big epic rock show, the way concerts are meant to be.

With oversized screens and monitors depicting Zombie’s art work (“American Witch”) and film scenes (“House of 1,000 Corpses), serial killers (“Scum of the Earth”), and classic horror movie imagery, Zombie’s band tore through 16 tracks including two from the upcoming Hellbilly Deluxe 2 album.

Guitarist John 5 continues to be the best addition to Zombie’s crew over the last three years as he effortlessly blazes through the classics, even providing an intoxicating extended solo during “Thunder Kiss 65,” and adding brilliant shreddage to the new stuff.

At times the crowd seemed more reserved than at past shows, which Zombie acknowledged during his stage banter early in the set. He later reserved the center of the floor for all of the ladies in attendance prior to “Living Dead Girl.” Surprisingly, the girls broke out into a mosh pit frenzy (you just gotta love the power of rock n roll) once the song kicked in.

“That’s hysterical,” commented Zombie in the middle of the chorus.

The only bad thing about the show was the poor scheduling. To arrange a concert for a Tuesday night in New York City is not the best move and could explain why the venue was not completely packed, as well as the few mellow moments in the mosh pit.

All in all, Zombie delivered another sick show. If you are a fan of big stage metal performances then catching Zombie live should not only be a priority, but mandatory.

Today was a big day for Vivian Acres. The long lost boys who have been living on their own for the

Today was a big day for Vivian Acres. The long lost boys who have been living on their own for the past couple of months was welcomed with open hooves by the rest of the herd. It was a good day for all concerned and at finally all my herd is in one place on the hill behind the house.

As you know the boys had to be removed from the herd as the fall arrived for the protection of the other goats, especially the does. Even though they are young, Slim and Rob were beginning to show signs that they were making preparations to “step up”. This would not be a good idea as they both are related to the same bloodline as the does.

Slim and Fatty still unaware they were going home

Today started for the goats as any other day, although it was kind of cold at 25 degrees. I let them out of their little house and fed them breakfast as normal. That is where it ended for them. One by one I grabbed each of the boys and led them to the big pen. I thought, or better hoped, that they would sense they were getting closer to the others and would be happy. Instead they were very apprehensive and after putting each inside the fence, they stood there looking at me. I guess they were waiting for me to reintroduce them. I had forgotten that Sharon, Ozzie, Weezer, Atreyu and Courtney had not met them yet.

I went inside with some treats as an icebreaker and when they all milled about, things began to happen. I was, as usual, immediately swamped by a mass of curly white fleece. In that swarm were the boys. The others tried to push them out since they were now seen as outsiders but the boys did not give up and before long, Slim was once again trying to crawl over the other goats to get some of the hay stretchers. I walked up the hill to watch what would be next. There was a lot of sniffing of the “new” guys.

Sharon and Ozzie checkin out Slim

Ozzie and Sharon made a point of visiting with all the boys but Ozzie and Atreyu seemed to welcome the chance to bully a few goats their own size. The ones i was most curious about was Momma and Slim. Slim was walking past her when he stopped and turned to her and they began a prolonged session of sniffing each others muzzles. I think that somewhere they recognized each other. It was sweet. On the other hand, Rob and his mother Gwen did not seem too chummy. It was fun to watch the goats reaquaint themselves with their old homes and explore some of the new additions like the water tank.

One of the most important things in a goat family is the hierarchy. It is a matriarchy. The larges goat is not necessarily the alpha. In my herd the alpha is Pink. All the other goats have a certain place in the chain of command and they are always reminded of it by those above them. All the shuffling and some head butting was an example of the goats all readjusting their places int he family. I have found that although some are dominant and others are not, there is never a goat that is left out of the bunch. I know this can happen but has not happened in my herd yet.

All in all, it was a relatively calm reunion and it is nice to have all the family back together again and it was another study in goat society for me. Check out the Video of the homecoming: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JcFyifyokR8

The movie this week became a complicated situation. I received A Haunting in Connecticut. The problem here is that I wanted to get The Haunting in Connecticut. However, I am apparently an idiot and clicked the wrong movie and thus the mix-up. Of course I blame it on the voices in my head. Occasionally they get so loud that it distracts me and that is what I think happened here. In any case the movie I got was a documentary from the Discovery Channel about a haunted house and the horrible things that happen to a family who moves into it. While this normally would be good fun, definitely the kind of movie I would watch over a relaxing lunch, it hardly made for movie night worthy viewing. I was bored and irritated with it in roughly 10 minutes. I don’t blame the movie for this, again I put the blame squarely on the voices in my head. As with a few weeks ago when the movie was broken, I realized the nature of the problem and found a remedy. In the hands of a lesser man or even a mere super human, this problem could have derailed the entire evening. However, I am far superior to that and simply replaced the movie with one I knew would be truly enjoyable, House of 1000 Corpses.

Yes, that’s right, House of 1000 Corpses. Rob Zombies debut film as both writer and director. The movie that got dropped by at least 3 film companies before coming to light. AKA the feel good movie of the year for 2002. In case you are not familiar with the plot here is the short version AWESOME MOVIE with a decent body count and plenty of gratuitous blood and torture scenes. If you want a slightly longer more detailed summary here you go.

2 couples are travelling across the county during the 70s gathering information for a book on roadside attractions. They happen upon the shop of Captain Spaulding (Wonderful performance ) and go on his Murder Ride attraction. Here they hear the story of “Dr. Satan.” They decide to investigate the story and end up in the hands of a sadistic family of miscreants. The fun is interspersed with clips of members of the family talking on video about their outlook on life. Add in an underlying theme regarding 5 missing cheerleaders and you have 88 minutes of pure bliss.

I saw this movie at the theater when it was first released and I must say I actually shed a tear when it was over at the beauty I had just witnessed. A marvelous film guaranteed 5 stars on my ranking system. A must see for all mature audiences.

This picture was taken only weeks before Kris would be diagnosed with cancer.

In thinking about my times with Kristov over the course of the last 8 years this is what comes to mind. I thank you for understanding a random missed detail during a time of mourning.

I wrote this for myself. To make sure I would not forget. But I also wrote it for Kris. To make sure noone else would forget what he meant to me and to the band MARAZENE.

I miss my friend.

I found out Kris had cancer on May, 17th of 2006 at a HIM concert at Congress Theater. Nikk had slowed down to take a phone call while we were walking up to the entrance of the venue and I would later find out it was Kris who was relaying to us the awful news. It was extremely serious. He required immediate surgery. He would need further treatment with follow up chemotherapy.

This was also the same night our video for the song ‘XecuTe’ was making it’s Chicagoland area debut on JBTV. The ‘XecuTe’ video had been a major project for me not only as a band member but as my first significant producer credit. For the band, the video was our big introduction to fans who were outside the Chicago area that we had met online through various social networking sites. It was a teaser for the eventual touring we would do in ‘06 and ‘07. The celebration fell a little flat and the whole evening seemed a bit out of place.

Needless to say, cancer was a difficult thing to wrap the brain around. I had no real personal experience with the disease. Kris was far too young to have developed such a bitch of a diagnosis. I would find out later on that Kris had suffered from mild symptoms of his condition as far back as the 2002 tour with BILE that he was a part of. So he basically started fighting the disease properly well into the onset. It would prove to be a very difficult thing to manage with the cancer having that much of a headstart.

What I do remember about all of this very clearly is that one minute I’m up to my eyeballs in deadlines for album mixes, album artwork, CD tour dates, phone calls, emails, follow up phone calls, lining up press for the album – all very typical for an independent band – and then *KA-BOOM* Kris all of a sudden gets dragged off (literally) for major surgery that he has to do without a second thought or choice just to survive. Head-spinning doesn’t begin to describe the situation. It was a split second requirement for Kris and we (the band) had all of ten fukking days to figure out wtf we were going to do about our ‘MachiNation’ CD show which was scheduled for May 27th at Kinetic Playground in Chicago.

The first time I actually visited Kris in the hospital after the surgery was a very stressful time. I distinctly remember the feeling while we were on the way that I was just going to freak out. I think I hid that well but inside the thoughts were a chaotic jumble. You have to consider that over the years of playing shows with him and rehearsing and hanging out that Kris was a given. He was a rock to me. He always had my back and I didn’t even have to think about it. Even through hard times there was respect. So I knew I would have to brace myself for whatever came my way that night. I know I had a beer on the way to the hospital just to calm my nerves. I had a beer in the hospital room with me tucked away in my coat. At the least I needed something to take the edge off and something to do with my hands. It was a very sad moment watching my friend struggle in a weakened state I never thought possible. There was no logic to it whatsoever. Here was a key change I had no note to cover.

Cancelling the CD shows seemed the obvious thing to do – but nothing was ever really that obvious in those days. It would have destroyed the momentum we had built up for our album and I don’t see how the math would have added up to us taking part on the National tours in ‘07. We definitely would not have been prepared for them. Odds are we would never have left Chicago and we would have always been remembered as the band that could have been. Our detractors would have loved that.

For the most part, Kris and the band received a tremendous outpouring of support from our friends in the Chicagoland area but there were a couple of notable local nitpickers and naysayers that had been doing their best to derail the bands overall progress that we had been making by stirring up the pot about “leaving Kris behind” and all sorts of nonsense. But these people never had the bands best interests in mind. These were just a few people voicing an invalid opinion about a band and a collaboration that they never really fully understood. Kris, Nikk, and myself were determined to make a musical statement the likes of which the city of Chicago would always remember.

There had to be another way and Kris and I spoke about the pros and cons of cancelling or postponing this event or that event at one of my hospital visits. Our focus was always on building for the future but that didn’t mean we weren’t keen to the possibility of obstacles along the way.

What we eventually decided to do was to turn our CD show in to a sort of tribute to Kris’s struggle and with Kris’s blessing we agreed to play the out of town shows with a sub drummer. Kris believed in our album. And he was determined to fight like hell to rejoin us as soon as he could to help push it. So with the bands complete understanding and unified from the get-go we set our sites like we wrote our music – with a bigger picture in mind.

Marazene always planned for the future – and Kris was always a part of that plan.

On the night of our CD show I suggested that our videographer for the evening tape well wishes for Kris who was still recovering. Our MC for the evening made sure to dedicate the evening to Kris and there were many many toasts in the name our struggling friend that night. He wasn’t present but Kris was certainly on everyones minds.

Kris underwent an intense chemotherapy regimen in Spring 2006 following his surgery and determined fukk that he was, still managed to join us on the road for most of our shows. Despite all the hardships involving logistics I knew I wanted him there rather than have somebody else. And contrary to what many people think (including myself in the beginning) the doctors favored his staying involved with the band when it came to shows. They thought it was good to keep Kris active and involved. To keep things positive, etc.

Toward the end of 2006 I was able to land some really cool shows for MARAZENE with OTEP in Minneapolis, MN, and MUSHROOMHEAD in Flint, MI, and Chicago’s House of Blues through some of my connections. It was an especially optimistic time for the band which would end up leading to our first National tour with Mushroomhead the following year in March of 2007. I was able to confirm a tour with Deadstar Assembly about a week later for April of 2007. With the band at full strength and ready to promote the ‘MachiNation’ album it was nothing but shows, shows and more shows.

It was every bands dream to be able to tour in support of the music they created. And by not putting the brakes on in 2006 Kris, Nikk, and myself were able to capitalize on the momentum and do even cooler things in 2007. This completely invalidated the whole “leaving Kris behind” nonsense and consequently confounded both our local critics and our local competitors who – for the most part – have yet to acknowledge Kris’s struggle and the bands achievements that were borne in the shadow of incredibly negative odds and faced completely on our own.

Kris’s chemo regimen wrapped up long before we did the National tours but the after effects were still present. We wore the battle scars of a nasty fight for survival (his hair [dreadlocks] had fallen out) but it didn’t matter to him. I don’t know if I would’ve made the same decision to leave the house while still recuperating from an illness such as his and I think that gives you a good idea of how Kris – through thick and thin – managed to live his life to the limit no matter what was thrown at him. It’s what I admired about him. The never-say-die, middle-finger-in-the-air-mentality. It’s one thing to rock out with your cock out. It’s quite another thing altogether to undergo rigorous surgery, chemotherapy, and travel to do shows to rock out with your cock out. I’d be willing to bet that most people (myself included) wouldn’t leave the house until they were 100%.

Kris won the first battle with cancer. And he was able to join us on our tour dates and two National tours because of it. That’s quite an accomplishment and a victory for Kris and the band he helped found, however you want to look at it, by any measure of success.

to be continued…

Early this morning Vivian Acres was visited from the 2 of the Vets from Large Animal Medical Associates. They are an organization who provides us with Vet services from nearby Essex Junction VT. Steve and Brady had been to the farm on other occasions but today was a really special day. Today was the day that Slim and Rob would be wethered. Wethering is the removal of their ability to reproduce, castrated.

We waited until now to do this for several reasons but mostly when a goat is wethered, their urinary system stops growing. The rest of the goat grows but the urinary system stops. This becomes a problem as male goats are susceptible to kidney stones and if the tract is too narrow it can cause a lot of pain and even be life threatening. It is recommended that the goats be at least 6 months old.

There are many reasons people get their male goats “fixed” . The main one is to prevent them from reproducing. The reason we don’t want these two cuties from reproducing is two fold. 1. Slim is from the same herd as most of the does we have. It is not recommended that goats from within the same blood line reproduce. After all Slim’s mother is in the herd. Don’t go there!! 2. Rob’s mother is also up in the herd and he is also not a pure blood white angora and although his hair is very soft, my goal is to have a regisered herd.

Rob undergoing his "procedure"

There are a few ways of accomplishing this. One way is to put a special rubber band around the young goats area, then over a period of time the area dries up and just falls off. This is good for small nearly new born goats but is not recommended for older goats as there are complications. This procedure is painless for the goat.

Another way is using a metal clamp. This clamp that kind of look like a pair of pliers crushes the cord inside and has similar results as plan 1. I do not imagine that this method is painless. This option was ruled out and was not even up for serious consideration. It is not 100% effective.

We at Vivian Acres chose the humane way. This involved the vet giving anesthesia to the 2 goats and they went to sleep. We set up the garage with a padded improvised O.R. table. Drs Steve and Brady were quick and efficient. A quick cut, some tying off and some more cutting, and it was done. I will not share the details or any of the detailed pictures but suffice to say there was little blood and no pain.

ditto Slim

Slim and Rob were quick to wake up. It was not too long before they were up and running in their pen like nothing happened. The were chomping on hay and hollering at each other again. I am glad because I think Georgi and I were more tramatized than they were. Goats are amazing animals.

The two boys will now join the herd again in 2 weeks. I am glad that they will be with their families again. I am axious to see if they recognize them. But i am sure it will be ok. Thank you Steve and Brady for making this as easy as possible.

Rob watching his back after surgery

Oh yeah, for those that saw the “Dirty Jobs” show where they were castrating sheep, Yes it is a real way of doing it and NO we were not going to do that here at Vivian Acres.

Sielanka rodzinna. Uff, jak bezpiecznie. I dzwonek do drzwi w niedzielny poranek. I znowu noc. I rozliczenie z przeszłością. I niby wszystko na dobrej drodze do happy (prawie) endu. Ale nie, młotek spada.

Ostatnie zafałszowanie to słowa “twoje cierpienie prawie się skończyło“. A potem następuje owo “prawie”.

<dygresja: jednak owo beznamiętne okrucieństwo w służbie loży starych dziadków jest zbyt wymownie złagodzone finałowym samobójstwem a w rezultacie osłabia wydźwięk samej koncepcji. a szkoda.>

Recently I defended Michael Bay (while simultaneously expressing how odious his movies can be), and now I rush to the defense of another man used as a lazy punchline to a billion deeply unfunny jokes about bad cinema: the acting colossus called Nicolas Cage. As with Bay, Cage is treated like a cautionary tale about how that vile, Chthonic monolith called Hollywood can drive people insane with greed, how talented individuals can lose their way and begin a descent from making art to making dross. He is accused of sleepwalking through films, cashing checks, appearing in unworthy crowd-pleasing dreck, and working with anti-cinematic infidels. His personal life is raked over (he keeps impulsively marrying women! He calls his kid a silly name! He buys too much crap!), his eccentricities treated as signs of mental illness, and his success used as example number two in the case against modern culture (example one being the success of Bay). Only Ben Affleck is treated with less respect, a fact that I intend to address in a future post where I defend him too. (I’m serious about that. Affleck is awesome.)

There are millions who seem to love to take a short-cut in thinking and just refer to Cage as a has-been with no understanding of what a joke he has become, though Cage’s most famous critic has been Sean Penn, the former friend who once told the New York Times, “Nic Cage is no longer an actor. He could be again, but now he’s more like a…performer”. This was said around the time that Cage appeared in two Bruckheimer productions — The Rock and Con Air — which seems to be the one thing an artist can do that will sink his credibility. Why did Penn single out Cage for that and not Cage’s co-stars Ed Harris, or Sean Connery, or John Cusack, or John Malkovich? They’re respected actors who have won awards and are considered to be fine actors, but Cage falls into the line of fire for moving from carefully considered character pieces like Leaving Las Vegas to action movies, three of which he did in a row (the third being the classic John Woo SF actioner Face/Off). His wildly broad performances in those movies were almost certainly a factor, but then he has always given broad performances, within which lie subtle moments (see also Wild At Heart, Birdy, Peggy Sue Got Married, etc.). They’re entertaining displays of eye-rolling crowd-pleasing acting pyrotechnics, but there’s a soul there too. This is what I think of as getting The Full-On Cage Experience, with madness and soulfulness tied together. Penn could never pull off anything like that. When he mugs, he ends up wrecking the movie.

By all that’s holy and unholy, how much better was Penn in Milk, or Dead Man Walking (incidentally, that’s one of my favourite screen performances of all time)? It’s not even a fair competition. Besides, this accusation, insinuating that Cage is no longer an actor, is rich coming from someone who appeared in I Am Sam. I’ll take an entertaining and unpretentious actor having fun playing a demonic avenger with a flaming skull than some humourless chide wasting his talent on Oscar-baiting bullshit like that any day of the week. Sadly, Penn’s not the only one who thinks Cage has pissed his talent away. In this little essay, Entertainment Weekly’s Owen Gleiberman compares Cage to Dr. Wesley T. Snipes, which is prescient considering Cage’s current tax woes, but while Snipes has descended into Direct-To-DVD hell, Cage is still working on big-budget movies and smaller curios, still attracting the viewing public, and still cranking out performances that are — at best — thrilling, and — at worst — merely entertaining.

The one argument that genuinely annoys me is the one where Cage is cranking out piss-poor, lazy performances since his last truly astonishing performance in Jonze and Kaufman’s Adaptation. I’ve often said that I think his work in that (along with his work in Leaving Las Vegas and Raising Arizona) deserves a coveted Shades of Caruso Free Pass…

…but of all the movies he has made since, only three performances really disappointed me: his work as Benjamin Gates in the first National Treasure movie, where he seemed awfully tired; his creepy performance in Next, the empty action thriller adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s clever short story; and his catatonic turn as a greasy-haired loser assassin in the disastrous remake of Bangkok Dangerous, which I suspect he took so he could get a holiday in Thailand. That last one really did give me cause for concern, but Gleiberman likes to make out that Cage is regularly signing on for “grade-Z genre schlockers”, which apparently include Ghost Rider and The Wicker Man. Neither of them are good movies, but they were not developed as low-budget cash-ins. Ghost Rider was obviously meant to be a big comic book adaptation, with a pretty good cast and a $110m budget, and even if it was absolutely dire, it was made with love by fans of the character, of which Cage is one.

The Wicker Man is a dumb-ass movie by any standards, but it’s made by Neil LaBute, who was once a promising director. He could have turned in a thoughtless remake of the excellent original (which would fit under Gleiberman’s umbrella of “genre schlocker”) but instead made something personal, for better or worse. For all it’s faults it’s obviously of a part with his other movies, dealing with his favourite themes of misanthropy, deceit, misogyny, fear of opening up to others, and gynophobia. I’ve occasionally argued that The Wicker Man is a satire on male fear of impotence and castration, a paranoid comical fantasy about a scheming cabal of exaggerated feminist ballbreakers who are out to destroy the penis, turning all men into drones and semen-donors whose sexuality is merely a sacrifice of power to the almighty womb in order to replenish the earth with children.

Sadly, even if this was LaBute’s intention — and even if Cage was in on this project for that reason alone — it’s still ridiculous and poorly made and filled with wonderfully camp moments. Cage maintains that the comedic aspects of the movie were not lost on him. In an interview with Spike Jonze, Drew McWeeny discusses meeting Cage, and Jonze is full of praise:

Jonze: I love [Cage]. We had the best time working together. He really works and focuses.
McWeeny: His publicist was a little wary of me being there, I guess, because he doesn’t do a lot of press and he doesn’t allow press around a lot, but he really was very accessible once I’d been there for a few days, and he kind of warmed up to me. And he was really just fascinating. I loved chatting with him about stuff.
Jonze: Totally chill.
McWeeny: Yeah. And I think far more self-aware than most people think. Like I think some people think Nic is in this vacuum and doesn’t realize how crazy some of his performances are. I got the feeling he was totally aware of how people perceive things. We were talking about THE WICKER MAN, and he was like, “How do people call that an unintentional comedy? I’m in a bear suit kicking Lelee Sobieski in the throat. I know it’s funny.”
Jonze: He just takes it so seriously that nobody knows how to take him. Like PEGGY SUE GOT MARRIED, I was like, “What is that?” Like I was 15 so I didn’t really know.
McWeeny: I just love how you can always count on him to push things further, like VAMPIRE’S KISS. He ate a roach, man.
Jonze: And also just the insanity of that performance, just the balls-out fearlessness.

Is it enough that Cage is aware of the ridiculousness of the movies he is appearing in? For me it is. I strongly suspect Cage is the most easily bored person in the world, and unfortunately that is paired with the ability to get work in movies that pay millions of dollars for him to spend on cars and comics and castles. Some of the films he has been in lately are truly awful, and I would never argue that they weren’t. Neverthless, I watch them for those flashes of manic commitment from Cage — The Partial Cage Experience — that delight me so. Are they valid acting choices, or is he merely trying to entertain himself while he trudges through formulaic populist bilge? As far as I’m concerned, even if he’s merely trying to entertain himself, he succeeding in entertaining me, and surely that’s what counts.

The only other popular actors that delight me as much are Clooney (who can do pathos and comedy equally well), Streep (who is always the best thing about everything she has ever been in), and maybe Jeff Bridges. Even those fine actors have not given me as much pleasure as Cage does, even when you forget about his early, golden years and concentrate on this bizarre stretch of poor movies. Since Adaptation we’ve had the insanity of Not The Bees…

…a literally hysterical fiery transformation…

…a Shout-Off with Rose Byrne (who is utterly overmatched, despite her invention of the word “chuldren”)…

…a run in with an obnoxious know-it-all child (the best part of which is how he treats the kid like an adult for most of the scene)…

…and a frustrating teaser of what could be his finest hour, if ever Rob Zombie got the money to make it…

His willingness to make fun of himself is the thing that keeps his crazy public and professional persona viable, and though many of his actions seem completely deranged, I honestly believe he’s playing a trick on us. Can someone who makes a series of adverts like these really be unintentionally weird?

(N.B. Anyone who has a sense of humour about themselves gets a break from me. Even the reportedly tyrannical and insensitive director Michael Bay gets points for playing up to his image with this commercial for Verizon:)

I’m a fully paid up Cage fan. For entertainment value, he can’t be beat. To see a person with such intelligence, quirkiness, restlessness, fearlessness, and energy do his thing in such big-screen movies is a rare thrill. If I squint I can see why Cage is now considered a hack by critics and film-watchers, because it’s easy to confuse being in a terrible movie and actually being terrible, but I worry that maybe people are also turned off by his intensity and his allegiance to the weird. The odd soporific performance aside, perhaps what baffles people the most is seeing him devote so much energy to projects that they feel don’t deserve it. Personally, I think that’s admirable. He’s getting paid enough, after all. Dance, you fucking monkey! Dance for your millions!

And yet even though I revel in his passionate and unpredictable work in crud, I’ve become concerned that we would never get another performance out of Cage that is as electrifying as his best work (disclaimer: I’ve not seen Lord of War or The Weather Man, and some have said he gives solid, rounded performances in both). Once upon a time he would work with Lynch and Scorsese, and the performances he gave were over-the-top yet grounded in some kind of emotional profundity, but lately those performances — while entertaining, memorable, and stronger than popular wisdom would have you believe — are lacking that extra fire. Well, I’m happy to report the return of The Full-On Cage Experience, as he takes on the task of being the 21st Century Klaus Kinski. More on that tomorrow, when I review Werner Herzog’s excellent Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans.

Laura Dern and Nic in Wild at Heart (1990)

Nicolas Cage: while the world laughs, we clap! (Can’t wait to see Bad Lieutenant …Herzog!)

“Cage has two speeds, intense and intenser. I like both speeds. I find him an intriguing actor because he takes chances. He’s an actor without speed limits. You want an Elvis who parachutes into Vegas? A weatherman whose viewers throw fast food at him? An explorer of the national treasures buried far beneath Washington? He’s your go-to guy.” – Roger Ebert on Knowing (2009), The Chicago Sun Times

First, a highlight reel of respectable films:

Knowing (2009…totally underrated)

Matchstick Men (2003)

Adaptation (2002)

Bringing Out The Dead (1999)

Leaving Las Vegas (1995)

Red Rock West (1993)

Wild at Heart (1990)

Vampire’s Kiss (1988)

Moonstruck (1987)

Raising Arizona (1987)

Peggy Sue Got Married (1986)

Birdy (1984)

Rumble Fish (1983)

Valley Girl (1983)

Secondly, a highlight reel of guilty pleasures:

Ghost Rider (2007. Come ON. A bikeriding skeleton!!!! My bad: a bike riding Nic Cage skeleton!)

Con Air (1997…this film is an essay in 90’s-era action film cliches)

National Treasure (2004)

Gone in Sixty Seconds (2000…thankyouthankyouthankyou! So much material for excellent Nic Cage impersonations. See video below.)

..And, never mind the absolute schlock, all great movie stars have ‘em.

“I have great affection for Harrison Ford, George Clooney and Brad Pitt. But can they go rockabilly like Nic did in “Wild at Heart?” Not that I liked the movie, but it’s a good question. With him it’s a lion-tamer on a high-wire. Anybody can play the ringmaster.” - Roger Ebert, The Chicago Sun Times“

Nic in Peggy Sue got Married

Nicolas Cage as Fu Manchu- a mock trailer shown during the intermission of Grindhouse (2007):

“There are often lists of the great living male movie stars: De Niro, Nicholson and Pacino, usually. How often do you see the name of Nicolas Cage? He should always be up there. He’s daring and fearless in his choice of roles, and unafraid to crawl out on a limb, saw it off and remain suspended in air. No one else can project inner trembling so effectively.” – Roger Ebert on Adaptation (2002), The Chicago Sun Times

Hats off!
