Drug smuggler who swallowed 67 packages of cocaine caught because of his bulging belly

A drug smuggler swallowed 67 packages of cocaine in an attempt to get through British customs. Student Fidelis Ozouli, 30, risked his life trying to hide the 1kg haul of the class A substance in his stomach. He later claimed he did not know the packets contained drugs. Officers at Manchester Airport became suspicious because Ozouli looked unnaturally bloated.  They carried out X-rays on his stomach and discovered a quantity of cocaine equivalent to two bags of sugar. It is one of the largest amounts ever found internally by UK customs officers. The drug, hidden inside scores of condoms, was 78 per cent pure and had a street value of £250,000. Ozouli left officials and a court baffled by claiming: ‘I didn’t know they were drugs.’ He added: ‘I just did not know what they were. I thought I was swallowing something else to take into Britain as a favour for a pal.’ At Manchester Crown Court, Ozouli, who is from Nigeria but lives and studies in London, pleaded guilty to importing class A drugs and was jailed for ten years – but continued to deny knowing what the haul was. Judge Thomas Gilbart QC told him: ‘I do not accept your evidence and do not believe it is credible. ‘The story is fantastical and I don’t believe a word of it. This was a calculated decision on your part to solve your money worries.’ Ozouli, of Kennington, South London, was stopped by UK Border Agency officers on his arrival at Manchester from Switzerland on September 5. He claimed he was on a business trip from Zurich on behalf of a pharmaceuticals company but inquiries revealed he had taken a lengthy and unusual route back to the UK from countries in Africa. He was arrested and the case was passed to customs officers who interviewed him. Later he was taken to a nearby hospital where he was X-rayed to ensure all the packages had been recovered.

Mike O’Grady, assistant director of criminal investigation for Revenue and Customs said yesterday: ‘Forensic tests showed that the purity of this cocaine is significantly above what we would normally find. ‘Swallowing any drugs puts the courier at risk, but with purity levels this high he was putting himself at considerable risk of death. ‘Criminals dealing in drugs with high purity levels are thinking solely of increased profits, to further fund their illegal activity.

Mr O’Grady added: ‘They show utter disregard for the damage drugs do to individuals and communities. ‘Customs is working closely with our partners in the UK Border Agency, police and other law enforcement agencies such as the Serious Organised Crime Agency to protect the public from the significant and damaging effect drugs have on our communities.’ The biggest ever recorded haul of cocaine found in a smuggler’s stomach in Britain was 1.5kg found inside 39 packages in 2003.

The money will be split equally between the finder Terry Herbert and the landowner Fred Johnson, the museum said.The two men and the two museums which hope to acquire the hoard, Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery and the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery in Stoke-on-Trent, have all approved the valuation, a spokesman added.Professor Norman Palmer, chairman of the Government-appointed committee, said: “The task of valuing this hoard required the Treasure Valuation Committee to analyse a very large amount of information in order to arrive at a fair market price and I am personally indebted to my fellow members whose energy and expertise made this result possible in so short a time.”He added: “All finders of treasure can take encouragement that the most valuable treasure find ever made was dealt with so speedily and yet so scrupulously by all parties concerned, given that the hoard was discovered only in July.”It is of course immensely important that this extraordinary hoard is acquired for public benefit and I know that the two museums are anxious to raise the funding to keep the hoard in the West Midlands as soon as they can.”

A fundraising campaign is being launched to help the two museums buy the hoard, highlights of which are currently on display at the British Museum in London.British Museum Press has published a book about the find, called The Staffordshire Hoard, and £1 from every sale is going to the appeal fund.A selection of objects from the hoard will also go on display at the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery from February 13 to March 7 next year.Mr Herbert, 55, from Burntwood, Staffs, a jobless council tenant on disability benefit, discovered the hoard while searching the field near the M6 toll road between Lichfield and Tamworth on July 5 using his 14 year old metal detector.He has described unearthing the treasure as “more fun than winning the lottery” and said he hopes to buy a bungalow with some of his windfall.Mr Johnson, 65, described the valuation as a “fair and reasonable figure”.He said: “The public have to raise that money and I don’t think we could have expected anything more.”The haul of over one thousand items – most of it gold and silver and thought to date back to between 675 and 725AD – has been hailed as a hugely important find.Experts believe it was buried at the site by its owners at a time of danger and then never recovered.

Ten students at North Naples Middle School were sent home for a day after a girl told the head teacher that she believed she had been kicked for being Jewish, prompting further instances to come to light. Florida passed strict anti-bullying laws last year and schools that do not do enough to stop it risk losing their state funding. Margaret Jackson, the school’s head teacher, has responded to the kicking incident by setting aside the first 20 minutes of each day to teaching students – aged 12 to 15 – about kindness, respect and ways of preventing bullying. David Barkey of the Florida Anti-Defamation League said the organisation had been consulted over the incident. “You are talking about an incident that has anti-Jewish bias if not anti-semitism. You have Jewish students being singled out, harassed and assaulted,” he said. Last year, four pupils were suspended from a middle school in St Louis over a “Hit a Jew Day” in which one Jewish student was slapped in the face. The “day” had been the culmination of a “Spirit Week” organised by pupils which included “Hug a Friend Day” and “Hit a Tall Person Day”.Some believe the idea for such behaviour originally came from the satirical cartoon show South Park which featured a “Kick a Ginger Day” in an episode.

The 55-year-old man from a small town in the central province of Quang Nam opened up his wife’s grave in 2004, moulded clay around the remains to give the figure of a woman, put clothes on her and then placed her in his bed, Vietnamnet.vn said. The man, Le Van, told the website that after his wife died in 2003 he slept on top of her grave, but about 20 months later he worried about rain, wind and cold, so he decided to dig a tunnel into the grave “to sleep with her”. His children found out, though, and prevented him from going to the grave. So one night in November 2004 he dug up his wife’s remains and took them home, Vietnamnet reported. The father of seven said neighbours did not dare visit the house for several years.”I’m a person that does things differently. I’m not like normal people,” he was quoted as saying.

Hitching a ride on a Beluga whale’s back, a daring diver glides through the icy waters of the Arctic.In an extraordinarily rare encounter between a human and this beautiful giant of the deep, the white whale is perfectly at ease with her new companion – and even appears to be smiling.Which is just as well – as no one really knew how the Beluga would react to human company before Julia Petrik made this dazzling dive.

For these muscular 16ft whales can get agitated if subjected to unwanted contact and aggressively defend themselves.Thankfully, this magnificent individual was only too happy to let Miss Petrik gently cling on to him and took her for a spin through the deep.The incredible pictures were shot beneath the pack ice in Russia’s White Sea, where a pod of the magnificent Belugas are being studied for a conservation programme.Miss Petrik is an expert free diver and is able to hold her breath for minutes at a time. This avoids the need to use bulky scuba tanks, which release bubbles that can disorientate the whales.

The lack of kit also gives her more freedom to move and synchronise her movements with the whale. The only downside is that free diving in icy cold water takes a heavy toll on the diver’s respiratory system.Julia Petrik had to saw through more than a foot of solid ice just to reach the freezing water below and wears a thick rubber suit to guard against the extreme conditions.Beluga whales – the name is Russian for ‘the white one’ – can survive here because they are able to use their powerful bulk to butt through the ice to breathe oxygen, before submerging once again into the abyss.Their domed foreheads contain a waxy substance, thought to be involved in their ability to communicate.They ‘chatter’ by whistling to each other – so much so that sailors and fishermen call them the ’sea canaries’.Divers can spend weeks searching for Belugas in the wild, but some of the whales are being kept in a large netted enclosure to be studied. Due to its high salinity, the water here freezes at a lower temperature than fresh water and can drop to a bone-chilling minus 2c. But Julia Petrik, given the ride of her life by this giant of the deep, soon forgot about the cold and was having a whale of time.

Kim Woodburn and Joe Bugner were seen last night taking part in one of the most vile and stomach-retching trials the campmates have ever seen.They had to drink pulped cockroaches, pureed kangaroo anus and pulped crocodile foreskin during the Jungle Arms task.

TV presenter Kim took offence at being voted to do yet another and said: ‘You are very mean, it’s my fourth one – it’s a test of my mettle.’

The first drink was Castlemaine Four Legs, a combination of pulped cockroaches and mealworms with a couple of live cockroaches as a garnish.The pair toasted each other and attempted to drink the vile mixture. But while retired boxer Joe seemed to have no trouble downing the drinks, and even seemed to like them, Kim stuggled.The second round was ‘Foreskin and Tonic’.Host Ant McPartlin told them: ‘This is pulped crocodile foreskin, garnished with a crocodile penis stirrer, once again each one is worth one star. You only have to drink the drink.’

Joe swiftly drank his, but it took Kim several goes. She branded it ‘vile’ while Joe said it merely tasted like washing-up liquid and then pretended to use the penis stirrers as fangs.’You have to pull yourself together. You’re crackers,’ Kim snapped at him.Their third round was Bum and Cokes -  pulped kangaroo anus and water.But while Joe thought it tasted like popcorn, Kim admitted it was more like ‘very sour rotten water that had pee in it’.Their fourth round was Croc-Tail – pulped crocodile tail with a croc tail stirrer.

‘The smell is atrocious, it smells like poo. The smell is so bad you could die,’ said Kim as she gagged on the drink.For the fifth and final round, Joe downed an Eye-ball – a glass of crushed crocodile eyes.But Kim had to drink a Sam-Puka – pulped Witchetty grub. She managed to drink the shot glass-full but then gagged and threw up the slimy mixture to the delight and disgust of Ant and Dec.’I’ve sicked a little bit but not much,’ she confessed.

But Ant told her: ‘We can’t take that one, will you give it another go?’Joe offered to do it for her, but was not allowed and she finally downed it after telling Ant and Dec ‘Boys: Stand aside. This is repulsing me.’The pair won all nine stars for the campmates plus an extra treat of chocolate.Joe said afterward: ‘It was disgusting but if I had to live on it, I would.’But Kim added: ‘If I had to live on it, I’d hang myself from the nearest tree.’Meanwhile the campmates are determined that actor Stuart Manning and singer Sabrina Walsh begin a romance in the jungle.Gino D’Acampo has been the chief teaser and is convinced that they fancy each other.He joked to Stuart that he thought the actor had dreamt he’d bought a new car because he kept calling out ‘Sab, Sab!’

But the pair deny anything is going on.

The two sat together on the love seat and Stuart said to her: ‘We’re just good mates, I’d understand it if I was always trying to touch you or something but nothing has happened at all.’People are obsessed, two people have got to get together – why are they so intrigued? I’m not in it to have a relationship.’And while Sabrina smiled and coyly agreed, she did look a little disappointed… Until Stuart asked her: ‘Do you want to lie down?’

They know they are being watched by everyone so they are probably not realising their love at the moment but I know it’s there!’

Gino and Sabrina also completed an overnight challenge to win a celebrity chest for the group.They had to trek through the jungle, walk along a tightrope across a ravine and then stay awake all night in order to win treats for camp.They were given sausages and beer for the evening and spent the time staying awake in shifts, trying to prevent the hands of a clock ticking for more than 30 minutes.Inside the chest were tins of food for the camp, including a can of Spam which Gino cooked up.

Justin said: ‘Who knew that a staple tin of spam could send the entire camp into such rhapsodies.’Meanwhile George Hamilton has been regaling the campmates with tales of his famous friends such as Frank Sinatra, Anthony Hopkins, former lover Sharon Stone, Marilyn Monroe and even Puff Daddy.He said: ‘Elizabeth Taylor, we went out together, we worked together.  Elizabeth is an extraordinary human being and she’s an amazing friend.’And he added: ‘[David] Niven said one of the best things about Errol Flynn ever.  He said you can always count on Errol Flynn to let you down.’

Jimmy White asked George about Marilyn Monroe. He said:  ‘You went on a date with her didn’t you George?’George said: ‘Yeah, she was forever getting ready.  She’d come out and she’d say does my hair look… and she’d go back fiddle with the hair some more.’He told Sabrina that he was a friend of Puff Daddy. He said: ‘Puffy’s a very good friend of mine.  Puffy’s a really good friend.  I like him a lot.  Do you want me to speak to him.  Would you like that?’And he said: ‘My first movie with Robert Mitchum, he said “You know they say I don’t know any lines.”  He says, “It’s not true.  I’m just too drunk to say ‘em.”‘Meanwhile, one of three celebrities will be voted off on tonight’s show.Sam Fox, Sabrina Washington and Jimmy White were told they were all up for the vote.

Ich mußte es auch erst 3 mal hören um gefallen dran zu finden, aber bei dem rauf und runter gespiele vom The Killers Original ist das doch mal eine gelungene Abwechslung. Sind wir Menschen oder tanzende Marionetten? Ich finde zur Zeit bin ich wohl eher eine Marionette, aber ne nette!

Jag letade efter en rolig bild på Robbie Williams till det här inlägget och den jag hittade råkade innehålla Gisele Bundchen i underkläder. Hon har absolut ingenting att göra med artikeln, men kolla på henne. Man skulle kunna skriva om svenska kungafamiljernas släktträd under 1400-talet och ändå få människor intresserade av att läsa om man inkluderar den där kroppen. (Note to self: kom ihåg det här till examensarbetet!). Nyheten är att Robbie friade till sin flickvän Ayda Field på ett radioprogram.. igår? Jag tror att det var igår. Det var garanterat inte imorgon i alla fall. Hur som helst spelar det ingen roll för Robbie drev tydligen, och man måste älska en snubbe som under en livesändning får ett ja på frågan vill du gifta dig för att sedan säga att han drev. Killen har mer balls än Keno och Bingolotto kombinerat.

Hallo zusammen und viel Spaß beim Lesen des nächsten Blogeintrags,

in dieser Woche hat mich ein Thena bewegt, das eine lange Entwicklung hinter sich hat.
Ich kann gar nicht genau sagen, wann es anfing, ich weiß nur, dass es mich seit dem ein bisschen Geld gekostet hat. Der dieswöchige Blogeintrag dreht sich um Musik, die ich in den letzten Montaten gekauft und heruntergeladen habe. Ich bin dazu übergegangen meine Musik bei iTunes zu erwerben und sie anschließend auf meinem Computer zu speichern. Ich entscheide mich bewusst gegen das Kaufen von CDs, da ich dise Zu teuer finde. Außerdem höre ich ausschließlich über meinen Laptop Musik, sodass ich so oder so die CDs auf meinen Laptop kopiere. Hinzu kommt, dass meine Wohnung nicht so viel Platz bietet, die ganzen CDs hinzustellen. Aber wie auch immer, nun mal zu den “CDs”, die ich in letzter Zeit gekauft habe.

Die angeführte Reihenfolge ist nicht chronologisch.

Panik
Mit dieser Band verbindet mich persönliches. Mit den Gitarristen der Band ging ich zusammen zuer Schule.
Die aus Schleswig-Holstein stammende Band, löst sich allerdings im kommenden Monat auf, da ihre CD gefloppt ist.
Zur Geschichte: Vor etlichen Jahren wurde die Band von Timo Sonnenschein und David Bonk gegründet. Nachdem sie einen Platenvertrag an Land ziehen konnten, änderten sie ihren Namen in Nevada Tan. Mit ihrem Lied “Revolution” gelang ihnen der Durchbruch in den Charts. “Niemand hört dich” erreichte Platz 8 in Deutschland und “Revolution” schaffte es bis auf Rang 15 der deutschen Single-Charts. Auch ihr erstes, und so viel sei gesagt, letztes Album unter den Namen Nevada Tan, stieg hoch in die Albumcharts ein. Ihr erreichter “Ruhm” währte allerding nur kurz, da sie einen langen Rechtsstreit mit ihrem Management hatten. Letztlich benannten sie sich wieder in Panik um, um so an den Erfol anzuknüpfen. Dies gelang aber nicht! Ihr in diesem Jahr erschienes Album konnte nicht an die Erfolge früherer Zeiten anknüpfen, obwohl ich es deutlich besser als ihr erstes finde. Das erste Album war geprägt durch den Stil des Managements, das zweite ist voll und ganz Panik (selbst produziert, gemixt). Man muss sich in den Sound erst mal einhören, doch es gibt das ein oder andere Lied auf der CD, das es durchaus wert ist gehört zu werden. Hört es Euch doch auch mal an!

p.S.: vielleicht kennt ihr Panik auch vom Bundesvision-Song-Contest?

Diese ebenfalls aus den Norden stammende Band, hat auch ebenfalls gerade ihr zweites Album auf den Markt gebracht. Auch hier gibt es wieder eine persönliche Verbindung zu einem der drei Sänger. Ihr gerade erschienenes Album mit dem Titel “Alles auf Einmal”, ist es wert gehört zu werden. Die auf deutsch singenden, ebenfalls beim Bundesvision-Song-Contest angetretenen Musiker, vereinen alles, was gute Musik ausmacht. Ihr erstes Album konnte keinen großen Erfolg verzeichnen, was ich sehr schade finde. Auch das zweite Album wird es schwer haben. Aber auch hier mein Tipp: Hört es Euch doch mal an!

Hausnorris
Auch mit der Dritten Band, bzw. dem dritten Künstler in der Reihe verbindet mich wieder etwas persönliches. Aufmerksam bin ich auf Hausnorris geworden, als mir der Hausnorris (Sean), seine erste CD nach einem gemeinsamen Referat in die Hand drückte. Hausnorris kommt also aus Frankfurt, und stellt somit die erste der bisherig vorgestellten Bands dar, die nicht aus dem wunderschönen Norden der Republik kommt.
Seine deutschsprachige Musik ist es, meiner Meinung nach, wirklich wert zu hören. Als das die erste LP seit ein paar Wochen erhältlich ist, ließ ich es mir nicht nehmen, diese zu kaufen: Auch hier vergebe ich das Predikat “wertvoll“. Mein Tipp, hört es Euch an!

Robbie Williams
Wir verlassen nun Deutschland und wenden uns den Briten zu. Zum Künstler brauche ich nicht viel zu sagen, da er bekannt sein dürfte. Das neue Album, das nach drei Jahren der Abstinenz erschien wurde von mir gleich blind gekauft, da ich wusste, das was dieser Mann macht, ist es wert gehört zu werden. Ich war um so überraschter, dass er wieder in Richtung seiner Wurzeln zurückgegangen ist. Das letzte Album “Rudebox” gefiel mir nicht so sonderlich gut, doch dieses Album übertraf meine Vorstellungen. Auch hier: Anhören!

Das Pop
Um den Kreis zu schließen, stelle ich Euch als letzte Band den ultimativen Geheimtipp “Das Pop” aus Belgien vor. Aufmerksam bin ich auf Das Pop durch die Myspace Seite von Panik geworden, da dort jemand das Video zur Single “Never get enough” gepostet hatte. Ich hörte kurz in die CD rein, und schon war sie auf meinem Rechner zu hause. Seit dem läuft sie hoch und runter. Diese Art von Musik macht mir einfach gute Laune. Dies müsst ihr Euch unbedingt anhören!

As the dawn of Reality Killed The Video Star breaks, the initial woozy harmonicas and swooning strings of Morning Sun slump out of the once-hollow shell that was at times to Robbie Williams’ career itself like a hefty yolk. It’s become, dishearteningly, painstakingly evident that Britain’s fave pun-addled, glossed-up crooner’s taken the straight-and-narrow. Musically, at least; following the poor sales and even poorer quality electro nonsense of previous car-crash outing Rude Box, Robbie’s entertaining the baying masses of 40-something Take That obsessives willing to put their idols’ differences in the dark and let seduction seep into overload. Unfortunately, these days Robbie’s about as smug as Simon Cowell balancing a dictionary on his repulsively meticulous hair-do, juggling an apple and a banana whilst professing his omnipotence within the British mainstream. In reality, a couple of dilated pupils, a barrel of nerves and a Jedward-infatuated X Factor audience were seemingly culpable for the death of this particular ‘Video Star’ this time around, as the incomprehensible Arabian wails of Bodies fell flat, allowing the likes of Lloyd Daniels and Stacey Solomon to flourish scintillatingly. No mean feat. Lamentably however, Bodies is nigh on the crowning moment of a mire of pseudo-Pet Shop Boys off-cuts (Last Days of Disco), dingy ballads (You Know Me) and hideous guitar pomp stomp last seen lining the walls of Hard Rock Café and the wallets of the likes of Lenny Kravitz and Justin Hawkins (Do You Mind?). The inspirationally-titled Difficult For Weirdos unashamedly features rowdy terrace chants imported from ’98, alongside camp-as-cabaret lazy synth swagger, whilst Starstruck retells the difficulties of the celeb highlife, complete with samples of flashing camera apertures. And that’s about as edgy as it gets here. The nightmarish cliché that has become Mr. Williams in this instance is littered with more confusing wordplay than a Times cryptic crossword (see the grotesque ignorance at the heart of Blasphemy) and lyrically, the cracks show. Where once Robbie entertained, he now flounders haphazardly in a record as stodgy as 12-month old Christmas pudding, had he obviously not wolfed it down prior to his grandiose return. At least it makes Angels out to be the heart-stopper it’s been exclaimed as for the past decade…

On Thursday night, a Children in Need show at The Albert Hall saw performers such as Robbie Williams, Take That, Shirley Bassey, Dizzee Rascal, Sir Paul McCartney and so many more all take to the stage.

Friday hosted our annual Children in Need show and the stars turned out in force to back the charity. Terry Wogan and Tess Daly presented as Alesha Dixon kicked things off with a performance of her single ‘The boy does nothing’, accompanied by dancers from ‘Strictly Come Dancing’. From then on in we saw a series of sketches and routines that we are only ever likely to see when it’s raising money for charity.

Fiona Bruce and a team of newsreaders ditched their usually smart attire for something a little bit easier to dance in…and teamed up with street dance act Diversity to show us what they’re made of.

Throughout the night we saw the cast of ‘Eastenders’ singing and dancing away in a one-off special and performances from Pixie Lott, Paloma Faith, JLS and Westlife.

The show also saw the first airing of the Children in Need charity single featuring classic children’s characters such as ‘Postman Pat’ and ‘Bagpuss’ singing a medley of popular songs and has been put together by Peter Kay. The Official Children In Need Medley by Peter Kay’s Animated All Star Band  is now available to buy in shops or to download online.

Hip Hop extraordinaire and all round superstar Jay – Z has been confirmed to play next year’s BRIT Awards. The rapper is due to perform a medley of his biggest hits, with a surprised duet reportedly in the pipeline. Fingers have been pointed at Colplay’s Chris Martin, friend Alicia Keys and even his lovely missus Beyonce as possible collaborators, but it is sure to remain a secret until the event.

Robbie Williams is also a confirmed guest, with the singer set to pick up an Outstanding Contribution To Music Award to close the ceremony.

The event will take place at London’s Earls Court Exhibition Centre on February 16th 2010.

Tonight a public of 1500 people that bought their ticket with debit mastercard will have the chance to see one of the most expected shows of the year, Robbie Williams will be playing for the selected public the best of his career and new presentations of his latest album “Reality killed the video star”.

Is it just me or do we see a “[male name] does [male name]!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But not literally SADFACE” headline on Noodles’s site every single day, at least once?

Okay, just checking.

You may be surprised at the scope of this week’s topic because when it comes to Elvis Presley, well nearly everyone’s got an opinion. The iconic nature of Elvis Presley in music and popular culture, has often made him a subject of, or a benchmark, in numerous songs. We launched the show with CALLING ELVIS by Dire Straits. Written by Mark Knopler and released in 1991, the song is about an Elvis fan that can’t believe that Elvis Presley is dead. Based on some of the bizarre ’sightings’ over the years, I fear he is not alone.

A song from one of my favourite films followed: Public Enemy’s groundbreaking FIGHT THE POWER from the soundtrack of DO THE RIGHT THING, directed by Spike Lee in 1989. Like the film, the song broke at a crucial period in America’s struggle with race. Unabashedly political, FIGHT THE POWER was confrontational in the way that great rock has always been. It attacks a whole roster of American icons including Elvis and John Wayne in what amounts to a virtual flag burning. Because who better embodies the American ideal than the King? The song goes so far as to call Elvis racist. I don’t agree with that. But what I do know from the National Archives is that in 1970 Elvis wrote a six-page letter to Richard Nixon asking him to make him a ‘Federal Agent-At-Large’ in the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs. And amongst the gifts that Elvis presented to the then President was a Colt-45 pistol. So what do we make of all this? Maybe only that, like a lot of his countrymen, Elvis was a misguided patriot who defended the nation’s order – an order from which blacks, in particular, had been routinely barred. The irony, of course, is that Elvis was the first artist to successfully blend black and white music: country music and the blues. And didn’t he do it well?

It was time for a change of tone: The very whimsical and wonderful Kirsty McColl’s with THERE’S A GUY WORKS DOWN THE CHIP SHOP SWEARS HE’S ELVIS. The song made an appearance on the FAMOUS PEOPLE show, but definitely deserved another spin. We followed with Richard Thompson’s FROM GALWAY TO GRACELAND.

Robbie Williams’ ADVERTISING SPACE is a song not only about Elvis but, also, about the price of fame.  Emmylou Harris followed with BOY FROM TUPELO. In case you weren’t aware Elvis was born in Tupelo Mississipi on January 8, 1935. And then it was the great Roy Orbison with HOUND DOG MAN.

Living Colour funked it up with their critique of the tabloids. The song  ELVIS IS DEAD ups the ante with an appearance by Little Richard. Check it out.

We dived into the second hour of the program with Ann Margret singing the title song of the film BYE BYE BIRDIE. Based on the stage musical of the same name, the story was inspired by Elvis Presley being drafted into the US Army in 1957. Jesse Pearson played the role of teen idol Conrad Birdie, whose character’s name is a wordplay on another singer of the era, Conway Twitty.  The film is credited with making Ann-Margret a superstar during the mid-1960s, leading to her appearing with Elvis Presley in Viva Las Vegas in 1964.

A couple of great songs were suggested to me by BayFM’s very own Cowboy Sweetheart, Carrie D. First up, Bap Kennedy with GLADYS & VERNON about Elvis’s parents and the night that Elvis was born. And then it was the great Waylon Jennings with the very entertaining NOBODY KNOWS.

I absolutely adore BLACK VELVET by Allanah Myles and have played that before. But, hey, when a song’s as good as this one it deserves a replay!

U2’s song ELVIS ATE AMERICA illustrates the many personas of Elvis, both good and bad. And then it was the romantically delusional Scouting For Girls with ELVIS ISN’T DEAD: ”Elvis isn’t dead ’cause I heard him on the radio….. and you’re coming back to me.”  Yeah, sure guys.

Time to get serious: First up, Kate Bush with her hit song about Elvis – KING OF THE MOUNTAIN. And then, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds transported us into a disturbing world with their song about the night that Elvis was born. Elvis was a twin but his brother was still-born. The song is TUPELO from the album THE FIRSTBORN IS DEAD. Here’s the totally mesmerising clip:

John Fogarty likens Elvis to the BIG TRAIN (FROM MEMPHIS). Neil Young reminded us that it’s “better to burn out than to fade away “, with his song MY, MY, HEY HEY.

Another of my faves followed: Cowboy Junkies with BLUE MOON REVISITED, otherwise known as SONG FOR ELVIS. And then it was Paul Simon’s song about travelling to Elvis Presley’s home, GRACELAND, with the Everly Brothers helping out on vocals. Don’t have a clip with the Everlys in it, but you can’t do much better than this concert performance of the song in Zimbabwe. Enjoy.

There was time for a little more mjusic dedicated to Elvis before signing off and what better than ELVIS HAS JUST LEFT THE BUILDING by the one and only Frank Zappa. And, of course, I had to play some of the King himself so we went out with BURNIN’ LOVE. Here’s what all the fuss is about:

Next week’s show will be dedicated to the patron saint of Theme Park, Roy Orbison, who died 21 years ago this December 6. So songs by Roy Orbison, The Travelling Wilburys, duets with Roy and covers of Roy Orbison songs. Anything connected to Roy Orbison qualifies. Personally I can’t wait!

Robbie Williams and his girlfriend Ayda Field have arrived in Sydney where the Brit pop star is slated to perform at the ARIA Awards gala and the pair may even go house hunting.

The couple kept avoided speaking to the media as they headed to Harbourside hotel from the Sydney’’s International Airport.

However, it is speculated that the duo may look for a lovenest Down Under.

“I”m thinking of coming down there. I have been looking for places out in the Outback, maybe a farm,” News.com.au quoted Williams as saying, before the release of his latest album Reality Killed The Video Star.

Willims is scheduled to reintroduce himself to Aussie fans, as he croons at the Metro Theatre.

And ARIA Awards is certainly a big act for Williams, who is headlining the event.

Il primo singolo tratto da «Heart», il nuovo album della cantante friulana, balza al primo posto del Music Control spodestando «Bodies» di Robbie Williams, che scende al 3° posto. In seconda posizione rimane «Haven’t Met You Yet» di Michael Bublé. Stabile anche «Ad ogni costo» di Vasco Rossi al 4°.

In quinta posizione troviamo «Con la musica alla radio» di Laura Pausini, in salita dal 7°. Seguono l’ex number one «Il sole esiste per tutti» di Tiziano Ferro (6°) e la sorpresa «Empire State Of Mind» di Jay Z e Alicia Keys, che entra nella Top 10 con un balzo di 10 posizioni. Less than a year after he bought the castle Compton Bassett for approximately 8 million pounds, Robbie Williams has announced its willingness to let the price down by 1 million, only to sell his UK residence.

Customers haven’t delayed in paying visits to the castle, Formula 1 champion, Jenson Button, indicating his interest in buying it.

The residence is equipped with a helicopter hangar, temples and fountains, and Robbie Williams built his own racetrack on the domain.

The singer hopes to succeed to sell as quickly as possible in order to move to Los Angeles, where his girlfriend, Ayda Field, lives.

La verdad es que el sample es sutil y encaja muy bien con el aire retro y pop de la canción. El vídeo, con Robbie Williams disfrazado de conejo y bailarinas montadas en zanahorias, es cosa aparte.

9.Jamelia – Beware of the dog, de Personal Jesus – Depeche Mode

Menos gracia tuvo sampleando Jamelia, que tiró del pegadizo hit de Depeche Mode para su canción. El resultado no es que sea desastroso, pero poco le queda a la canción si le quitas el sample.

8. Marta Sánchez – Superstar, de Just Can’t Get Enough, de Depeche Mode

El sample también se ha cultivado en territorio nacional. La Sánchez, fiel a su título de Madonna española, copió a la ambición rubia (como lleva haciendo 30 años). Que la ambición rubia vuelve al dance y samplea canciones de los 80, pues ella también. Respaldada por Carlos Jean y cogiendo de este pegadizo hit de Depeche Mode, se marcó esta cutrada de canción y se quedó tan ancha. El problema es que si Madonna se apunta con cierto retraso a las modas, no te digo ya la Sánchez. Tarde y poco original es lo mejor que se puede decir de este engendro musical.

7. David Guetta feat Kelly Rowland – When Love Takes Over, de Clocks – Coldplay

El DJ y productor está arrasando con su disco y con sus producciones para los Black Eyed Peas. Pero, ¿un sample de Coldplay para una canción dance no sería ir demasiado lejos? Guetta supo aprovechar lo pegadizo de la intro de piano, aunque se abusa un poco durante la canción. Sin embargo, el efecto logrado es bastante resultón.

6. Britney Spears – Radar, de Tainted Love – Soft Cell

A la hora de samplear la Spears no podía ser menos, y decidió tirar de este clásica versión de Soft Cell para su electro-pop-petardo en Radar, que está incluida en Blackout y en Circus (la misma canción en dos discos, sí señores). Al igual que Jamelia, poco queda de la canción si le quitas el sample, pero al menos el resultado final es un poco más digno.El problema es que este sample ya lo había usado alguien unos años antes…

5. Rihanna – SOS, de Tainted Love – Soft Cell

Sí, Rihanna, hoy estrella internacional gracias a su Umbrella y otras peripecias, ya había usado para su debut este sample en sus SOS y con un efecto más contudente que la Spears.

4. Madonna – Future Lovers, de I feel love – Dona Summer

El Confessions de Madonna está repleto de sample bien usados. Uno de los más característicos y aparentes (aparte del de Jackson 5, no incluído en este ranquing) es de Dona Summer, que curiosamente era contemporánea de Madonna en los 80. La gracia es que la canción de la Summer era tan avanzada  a su tiempo que no parece para nada una canción de los 80, con lo que la elección para el sample es bastante acertada.

3. Kylie – Sensitized, de Bonnie & Clyde – Serge Gainsbourg

La diva australiana fue más lista sampleando en su último disco X, y cogió también de una canción poco conocida por el público actual. El sample del maestro Gainsboroug, si bien un poco estrambótico, le sienta muy bien a la canción.

2. Gwen Stefani – Wind  it Up, de Lonely Goatherd – Banda sonora de Sonrisas y Lágrimas

Más rocambolesco fue lo de la Stefani. ¿Ese sample tirolés en una canción pop hip-hop al estilo Stefani? Según ella quiso incluirlo porque Sonrisas y Lágrimas era una de sus películas favoritas. A las primeras escuchas no pegaba ni con cola, pero uno se acababa acostumbrado y hasta le encontraba su gracia…

1. Madonna – Hung Up, de Gimme de Abba

Es evidente que el sample del que más se hablado en los últimos años fue el del Hung Up, del retorno de Madonna a las pistas de baile. La canción supo aprovechar lo pegadizo del sample para crear una canción totalmente nueva, cosa que no siempre se consigue. Los Abba se mostraron encantados de que la reina del pop sampleara su hit, así que todos contentos.

Robbie Williams‘ın 9 Kasım 2009′da çıkan albümü “Reality Killed the Video Star” son zamanlarda aldığım en iyi CD’lerden. Trever Horn gibi önemli bir ismin yapımcısı olduğu albüm, Williams’ın da “gurur duyduğu” bir çalışma. THE LYCHEE TOILETS EXPERIMENT: Trial 1 = FLAVOUR

Go ahead. Let your imagination run wild.  What kind of experiment would possibly combine lychee with toilets?  Maybe for cleaning, or sanitizing, or even, dare I say…for FLAVOUR?
…Now, I don’t know what you’re thinking in terms of flavour, but let me say, that I’m just thinking in terms of the “flavour” of aesthetics haha.

Okay, I’m completely lying.  I have no idea what I mean by “flavour” either.  It just seemed to fit really well with lychees (which do have lots of flavour), and toilets (which probably do not have much flavour…I would think you have not tried…Though I suppose you could ask your dog or cat.  But that depends how well you can communicate with your animal.  After all, if you can’t speak “canine-nese, or feline-nese”, how can you really know if your pet enjoys the flavour from the cleanest water in the house?…ahem.)

Hmm.. I also have no idea how to combine lychee with toilets, though I suppose I could come up with all sorts of ways.  The experiment is just my little psychology thing to see whether the combination of lychee and toilets is enough to get your attention to shift your focus away from your either really fun or really busy life.  Stop paying attention to the daily complexities of your life and enter a world of senseless, fantastical nonsense–The world of my Blog.  Haha. Then again, if you’re already “living the dream”, well, God Bless you…that’s a great attitude to have…and may my oddly entertaining blog add some nonsensical wonder to your existence
