Sinopsis:

By Tyann Mullen & Kristina Webb Contributing Writer, Managing Editor A recent scare in a local c

By Tyann Mullen & Kristina Webb
Contributing Writer, Managing Editor

A recent scare in a local community has students at Palm Beach Atlantic University asking the question: What’s in our water?

An accumulation of brain tumors noted by several residents of The Acreage prompted the Florida Department of Health (FDOH) to research the well water system in the peaceful, rural community.

Of the thousands of residents, 46 adults and 15 children were found with brain tumors. The FDOH is continuing to research the victims’ medical histories and is seeking to determine whether private wells are causing the cases of cancer to form, or if other environmental causes are at play.

The City of West Palm Beach, which supplies PBA’s water, tests its water at points around the area “hundreds of times a year,” said Peter Robbins, public information officer for the city.

“Because the area is so large, it is more efficient to take samples across the area, rather than in each and every home,” Robbins said. “We do constant surveillance of our water.”

PBA’s water travels from Clear Lake to a water treatment facility and then to pipes that feed into West Palm Beach.

According to the City of West Palm Beach’s Public Utilities Web site, the water goes through a filtration and sanitation process.

Chlorine is the chemical most used to sanitize the water, the Web page reports.

Although large amounts of chlorine could be harmful to your health, once diluted in water it loses any potential threat.

Fluoride, ammonia and sodium hydroxide are also added to balance the water’s levels.

In West Palm Beach’s 2008 Water Quality Report, all levels of potentially hazardous contaminants were safe except for one: trihalomethanes, a by-product of the chlorine used in the sanitation process.

An excess of trihalomethanes over an extended period of time may cause liver and kidney damage and increase a person’s chances of cancer.

“Think of a swimming pool: too much chlorine in a pool irritates the skin and the eyes,” said Dr. Matthew DellaVecchia, assistant professor of chemistry and pharmaceutical science at PBA. “Not enough chlorine and all kinds of ‘nasty’ start to grow and thrive. When the chemical balance in the water is ‘just right,’ you have a beautifully clean pool that is pleasant to swim in.”

DellaVecchia added that the chances of experiencing any side effects from the water treatment process are minimal.

A report released in early September by Palm Beach County said the water in the Seminole Water Plant, which supplies many of the schools in The Acreage, tested positive for slightly elevated levels of radium.

This naturally occurring radioactive isotope is commonly found in well water.

The level of radium found in the Seminole Water Plant’s wells was deemed safe, the report said.

“I would argue that the current system of water disinfection has proved quite useful and relatively safe,” DellaVecchia said. “It would also be fair to say that many people have lived on water from a well and that has proven equally useful and relatively safe as well.”

Although radium sounds like it would harm your body, that is not always the case.

Many things in the environment are naturally radioactive, including air, water and soil. Our bodies include a composition of some radioactive materials.

According to DellaVecchia, just as too much of a chemical could harm you, too much radium could harm you as well.

“It all depends on your genetics and how much radium your body can handle,” DellaVecchia said.

B is For Beer by Tom Robbins is a must read book in this generation. It is very timely; Tom Robbins has exerted time and effort to think of ideas on how to open people’s eyes in a discreet manner. His style of attacking on serious issues while using soft words makes the whole content more interesting.

It’s a good thing to read this kind of book especially now a days, because people are not more conscious about little things. B is for beer, from the title itself; you can see how it affects young minds. It’s learning to drink alcoholic beverages such as beer and it is as easy as learning the sound of letter “B” in the alphabet.

To tell you a story, my dad had died due of his addiction to beer and alcohol, but beside of his life taken away, I realize now that I really have a small portion of happy memories during my childhood days. He beats me everyday, he fights with my mom, okay let me add that, to the neighbors as well. Those were became traumatic experiences to me.

That is why I really want to buy this book, so that I after I read it, I can past it on some of my friends especially for those who are hooked up with alcoholism. It can definitely help a lot. Tom Robbins must have covered some reasons why this addiction last. Knowing the cause of problem will always be the first step, it’s probably in his book. B is for Beer by Tom Robbins.

That statement poses several issues that comes in mind:
1. Is it okay for a mere staff to make any decisions? If it is okay, what kind of decision and why?
2. Would it create a mess if lower level managers could make decisions? Shouldn’t it be that the decisions are only made by top level management?

So about a few weeks ago, I finally quit my job at Baskin-Robbins, after working there for nearly two years. It was way longer than I had expected to stay there.

First, I have thank Jennifer for getting me my first job of my life there (aside from that Cutco marketing scam, which I ran away from on the last day of training). Also, Kevin and Sholah were the ones that taught me most of the complex skills and rules of working as a professional ice cream scooper, even though my only memory is of Kevin getting locked into the freezer by Sholah. Kevin couldn’t get out, so he had to call the store phone with his cellphone to be liberated by my boss. Also, Henry was the one that taught me how to do night shift, even though the only thing burned into my mind was his evil glare when I refused to risk my life taking out the trash at night. I swear, one time, I encountered a wild homeless man next to the dumpster. Good thing homeless people are too depressed and hungry to chase you.

It wasn’t all that bad, though. The coworkers were cool and the shifts were chill. So chill, that I can put aside all the ghetto-ness of the facility. How ghetto can that Baskin-Robbins get? Well, at one point, we needed an extra A/C because it was getting really hot in the store. Incredibly, my boss had fashioned a new A/C out of ice and a fan– with only ice and a fan.

left - fan, right - ice

The skills I have gained from working at that place are priceless and unforgettable. I will list them all in my resume, be it mixing fudge with water or washing aprons in a bucket. I’m pretty sure my resume would have over a (baker’s) dozen of skills and techniques. No more will I be dumfounded if my future job’s administration asks me for a double-scoop hot fudge sundae with pistachio almond and cherries jubilee; with whipped cream, cherries, and roasted almonds on top. No more will I be set in a retarded gaze if one calls for a chocolate shake with vanilla ice cream. Well, except for a chocolate soda. What the fuck is that?

Okay, I just Googled it. We don’t have club soda, and I doubt he wanted Sierra Mist as the substitute. That customer could have at least explained in detail what he wanted to me and Han, instead of putting his palm to my face and saying to my English-challenged coworker, “If he doesn’t know how to make it, then FORGET IT!” and then proceeded to storming out of the store.

He was holding a newspaper. People who are holding newspapers are never in a hurry, unless they live in New York, where everyone is in a hurry.

Another thing that was unforgettable were the customers. The army of late-night Middle Easterners who raided the store five minutes before closing and don’t tip. The guy with a flat top haircut and sunglasses who always ordered a Mocha Blast with vanilla ice cream and nothing on top (who recently discovered Starbucks and stopped coming to Baskin-Robbins). The old couple who always ordered a Mocha Blast and a chocolate shake, until the wife said it was too fattening. Oh, and the joy of feeding ice cream to a local soccer team who treated the customer area like their opponent’s soccer field.

There were some things I was proud of as I worked at Baskin-Robbins, though. Having the two most unhealthy beverages in the country was pretty cool.

I could make one, and hold the lethal concoction in my hand proudly, while asking if they wanted whipped cream on top.

Also, the ownership change was pretty memorable. A lot of people didn’t like losing their cheap, business-savvy boss. Also, a lot of people didn’t like the new boss. There were plenty of legit reasons for not liking her, but for me, I don’t think she’s that bad. I just think she’s a bit different. The first boss was more of a real boss, while the new boss seems to treat us with a more motherly philosophy. Sure, she spoon-fed procedures and information to us that most of us already knew. Sure, the old boss just threw shit at us and said, “Make it happen.” I just think it’s different, but not for the worse. Everything has their ups and downs, and people just need to learn to adapt. I know you guys can, or else Baskin-Robbins employees would be extinct by now.

Many people still don’t know the correct reason why I really quit Baskin-Robbins. It is because I transferred to SJSU, now. I will be spending most of my time there, so I decided to get a new job in SJSU. So far, no luck, but still pretty busy with school. I barely even have time to hang out with my closest friends, since our schedules are so inconvenient to each other. Plus, I had just added to a project management class, which needs me to be available as much as possible for my team and project manager. Hopefully, I can get some connections and be able to get an internship earlier than I had planned and forget about getting another random part-time job. I’m really bucking up and trying to go far in my future, and sweet, delectable ice cream will not hold me back. That was pretty much the main reason I kept working at Baskin-Robbins.

Throughout my short career at Baskin-Robbins, I saw my coworkers cravings for ice cream slowly diminish and die in agony from too much exposure to sugar, milk, and cream. As for me, I still love ice cream more than ever, and will probably never stop. Baskin-Robbins have brainwashed me and turned me against Cold Stone. I’m okay with everything else, though. Well, that pretty sums up vaguely of my experiences as a professional ice cream scooper. Sorry, my friends. No more discounted ice cream.

It’s my first time at this so give me a break. I know you’re out there, they warned me about you. Yes you cretins, just waiting to criticize anyone that does anything of value. Well let me tell you… kiss my butt and I throw dead animals at you. (It’s a little Monthy Python thing for the uninitiated).

Yes I am writing a book. It will be available November 15, 2009. So mark that day on the calendar. I give you permission to take the day off from work to read my life transforming book. Fine be skeptical- I told you, you were out there.

They told me, to tell you, so you can tell others, so they can tell others, who I am. So here goes, the serious stuff- they told me to first build something called credibility.

Maybe I don’t have to tell you anything here since it is all in that About page well I don’t know. I’m sure one of you cretins will let me know, please do.

A father of 3 teenage boys, an accomplished entrepreneur who owns 3 Corporations, a writer and an Executive Recruiter with 24 years of top production in North America and internationally. Oh! Almost forgot (my dance teacher, Maria would be very mad at me, she thinks everything revolves around dancing www.shallwedance.ca) at one time, an accomplished ballroom Dancer who has many amateur titles to my name.

In March 2009 NPA the National Personnel Associates handed out its Top Production Awards for 2008 and out of over 350 agencies worldwide including, North and South America, Europe, Australia, Asia and Africa, I personally won the:
1. Consulting Excellence Award for Outstanding Production
2. Group Top Importer Award-candidate placements
3. Four Times Quota Award

As an owner of ADV Advanced Technical Services Inc.; I direct a team of specialized International Recruiters which execute searches for Pharmaceutical -Drug Development and Drug Discovery. Focus is on expanding client network of Pharmaceutical Development/Discovery and Contract Research organizations throughout the world. I also specialise in retained Executive Search.

I am putting the finishing touches on my book-which will soon be available by Nov 15/09- Getting the Ideal Job You Want.

It is a practical guide on how to find a job. How to step it up a notch, and through self-awareness, find a great job. A guide to finding fulfillment and passion in your work.

What it is not is full of fluff.

What it is, is GREAT.

The reason for this blog is shameless self-promotion-yes I want to get rich but at the same time help you.

A book that will first, keep you entertained; those who have previewed it, said it is totally hilarious- while still providing the best insight, techniques, guidance and advice they have ever read or heard about. I’m good. What can I say!

Actual real life examples and scripts to guide you. How the old way is the dead way? Put a nail in that “old way” coffin and throw that sh**t out, it’s stinking up the place.

New innovative proven techniques used by my staff and I, that anyone can use in order to land that dream job. Yes Einstein is a collaborator on this book!

How to get out of the funk and the downward spiral of rejection by applying my techniques and getting positive results? This is starting to sound like an infomercial, when is Tony Robbins coming out?

How to break through the “fear” that holds you back, gain confidence and take action? Are you afraid, you pooh, pooh baby.

How to discover your passion and find a life of fulfillment through your work? So you’re thinking “very profound Paul, Who do you think you are? God.” Well…just not quite yet.

“How you’re wasting your time with Search Firms unless you’re an “A” player? How to become an “A” player? Get your mind out of the gutter, not that type of player.

How to make thousands of dollars by turning search firms into you’re best friends? For those who did not catch that –yes that’s right, search firms GIVE YOU MONEY and then they still help you find work? “This guy is dreaming. Are you for real Paul?” Yes I am –if you’re not interested in making money or finding a job or finding you’re life’s passion then don’t buy the book and get you’re cheap prying eyes off my blog!

By the way who in the hell came up with the word blog. It sounds like something nasty you were fed at some point in your life. Like in, “she gave me a plate of blog and I almost puked.” If anyone knows where the name came from please post it here, thanks.

Why going through a Headhunter in this economy is killing your chances of getting the job you want? That’s right baby!

How new immigrants to the USA or Canada need to forget everything they have been told to do in government sponsored workshops, or by friends or by others that mean well and follow my techniques to get a good job? Helloooowww! The government never knows anything of value.

How to connect with the interviewer to assure an offer? Forget about flirting and if you are thinking of flirting with me please by all…..I can not answer further under the grounds that I may incriminate myself.

How when using email to provide information “less is actually more”. As you can now tell I am not very good at the “less is more” mantra.

Will be back soon. I’m hungry. I think I’ll have a plate of some of that blog who knows it might be good.

Adieu pour maintenant, Paul

From Revolutionary Ancestors of Highland County …. DAR ….:
“Lieut. in a Pennsylvania regiment of Cavalry, commanded by Stephen Moylan. Commissioned on 1 Feb 1781 and served to the end of the war. Residence: Washington Co., PA. References: Pennsylvania Archives Second Series, Vol II p. 134. Name of John Robins found in a Roster of the invalid regt of PA, also commanded by Lieut Nicola. This regt discharged 1783. Lieut Robins acquired 1/2 pay commutation and bounty lands, warrants of land in OH.”

From a history of the Robins family included in the Bible of Newton D. Robins,
brother of Dr. Milton Robins, and written by Dr. Robins 1 Jan 1885:
“About the year A,D, 1700, three brothers came from Wales to the United States, one settled in New England, one in New Jersey and one in South Carolina, and when they emigrated west they generally followed the same parallel of latitude and from there the numerous family of Robins are supposed to come. Our ancestors settled in New Jersey and the first actual knowledge we have of them were two brothers named John Robins {born April 10, 1760, died 1840} and Daniel Robins who were born in Sussex County, New Jersey about the year 1760. They moved to Washington Co Penn about 1778. There they were married: our Grandfather John Robins was married to Sara Daily [about] the year 1781. Both families moved to {Bainbridge} Ross County Ohio about 1790 but on account of the great sickness of the Sciota and Paint Creek bottoms near Chilicothe Daniel Robins moved to the Brush Creek hills on the Ohio river and John Robins moved to the west part of Ross County Buckskin Township Ohio where he raised a large family consisting of Daniel, Philip, John, James, Moses, Isaac and Charles and Mrs. Wiley (Hannah) and Mrs. Jones (Rachel). In an early history of Ross County I see John Robins’ name is written John Reuben where he was one of the first Justices of the Peace in that county a position which he kept for many years.
(The article goes on to follow the family of Philip as they moved to Shelby Co., IN.)

Below is an example of the summary printed when a cousin was accepted into the Daughters of the American Revolution [DAR]. Mrs. Pile descends from Philip who took his family to Indiana – mentioned above.
[p.45] Mrs. Marjorie Lamar Pile.
DAR ID Number: 108148
Born in Shelby County, Ind.
Wife of A. R. Pile.
Descendant of Lieut. John Robbins, as follows:
1. John J. Lamar (1830-1907) m. 1857 Sarah Ellen Law (b. 1838).

Intriguingly, I found this abstract in a book of Wills, Guardianships, etc. for Highland County OH (by the McBrides, of course) at the OH Historical Center:
“July 27, 1841 John Robins appointed Guardian of Jarred I., aged 9 years, Daniel M.,m aged 9 years, Amanda Jane, aged 7 years, Isaac N., aged 5 years, and Mary E. Robins, aged 2 years, his children Surety: Thomas Karr”
Why does a guy get or need Guardianship of his own kids? I’ll be looking into this.
Why is “Robins” appended only to Mary … is it a sentence-structure thing?
This listing suggests additions to the chronology:
1831 Married John Robbins in Greenfield, OH
1832 had sons Jarred I. and Daniel M.
1834 had daughter Amanda Jane
1836 had son Isaac I.
1838 had daughter Mary Robbins
1841 Mary died (I suppose)

ca1800 born
1831 Married Mary Irwin in Greenfield, OH
1838 had daughter Mary
1840 Census Madison Twp., Highland Co., OH: five Irwin farms all clusterd
together, with the John Robbins family consisting of: Males: one < 5, two
between 5 & 10, one in his 30s; Females: < 5, one betw. 5 & 10, three in their
20s, one in her 60s.
*possibly died before 1850 based on the census below:
1850 Census (same neck of the woods, but NO John & no spouse Mary!: (farm worth
$2430) … Eleanor Irwin 75 born NJ, Sarah Irwin 30, Eleanor Irwin 28, Mary
Robins 12, born Ohio

NEW Notes 30aug09:

*** Son Charles’s death certificate drove me crazy for years. It said Mary Irwin. After her parents both died while she was fairly young, she was on the farm then headed by her grandmother Eleanor Taylor Irwin. It was 1850; Mary was 12; Eleanor was 75.
